For anyone who loves classic comedy, the W.C. Fields Comedy Collection is absolutely essential. Film for film, this may be the best DVD showcase ever devoted to a single comedian, including all five of Fields's acknowledged classics in a sturdy, beautifully designed library-quality slipcase. One could easily lament the relative lack of bonus features (it would have been nice to have some vintage Fields radio shows and newsreel footage), but the inclusion of A&E's 1994 Biography documentary W.C. Fields: Behind the Laughter is sufficiently informative about Fields's life, career, irascible personality, and tragic alcoholism. That's all that's really needed when the films themselves are so timelessly entertaining, and they're all remarkably pristine in sound and image quality. The best way to appreciate Fields's evolving screen persona is to view these films in chronological order: In International House (1933), Fields was merely one of many Paramount stars of screen and radio (including Rudy Vallee, Burns & Allen, Bela Lugosi, Sterling Holloway, and manic bandleader Cab Calloway), but he handily steals the show, invading a Shanghai hotel in his airplane/helicopter and delivering the classic line (to Franklin Pangborn), "Don't let the posy fool ya!" It's one of Paramount's best all-star revues.
It's a Gift (1934) is a remake of Fields's 1926 silent It's the Old Army Game, and was the first sound feature devoted to Fields's inimitable talent. As beleaguered husband and would-be orange farmer, Fields revives vintage routines from Vaudeville and Broadway, and his first encounter with Baby LeRoy is comedy gold. You Can't Cheat an Honest Man (1939) features Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy and Fields's classic, still-hilarious ping-pong routine, while 1940's My Little Chickadee matches Fields (as "Guthbert J. Twillie") with Mae West, whose unforgettable on-screen banter with Fields shows no sign of their notorious off-screen animosity. In his raucous masterpiece The Bank Dick (also 1940), Fields is "Egbert Souse," lowly bank guard, unlikely hero, and manic driver in perhaps the greatest slapstick car-chase scene ever filmed. Despite the regrettable absence of Fields's final starring feature Never Give a Sucker an Even Break, this classy five-disc set is a veritable cornucopia of comedy, offering ample proof of Fields's comic genius through classic one-liners, physical routines, memorable costars, and perfect bits of business that never grow old. --Jeff Shannon

W.C. Fileds Volume 1.......2007-06-21
W.C. Fields, equal parts tragedy and triumph, was at once totally unique and an everyman. He used both his finely honed comedic and physical talents (refined in earlier days as one of vaudeville's most skilled jugglers and sleight-of-hand men) to create a cranky, crafty, crooked ne'er-do-well you couldn't help but love. His lifelong struggle with alcoholism was fearlessly portrayed on-screen as well, as in my favorite scenes in "Bank Dick" where Egbert gleefully presides at a watering hole called "The Black Pussycat Café" (with stooge Shemp Howard as bartender no less)! Though "Gift" and "Bank Dick" are my personal favorites, there is much to admire in all five of these vehicles- to wit, the great man himself. For fellow devotees of vintage comedy, and especially Fields' fanatics, this memorable box set is very much worth owning- and sharing.
Fantastic elaboration of some gems from the celluloid vistas!.......2007-04-01
Ah, yes... Wonderful collection, extremley well remastered. The bonus material is also great, though short I think. I enjoyed the biography piece as much as the DVD W.C. bio: Straight Up, which is also reccommended. Thanks to all who made this possible. As a card carrying member of the W.C Fields fan club, I can attest to this items value. Comedy at its finest from a true genius at his craft.
You'd like to have a nose like that full of nickels, wouldn't you?.......2007-04-01
I bought this box set for one reason only, it seems that's the only way to get "It's a Gift" on DVD. I have already written about "It's a Gift" elsewhere, but suffice it to say I think it is the best of W.C. Fields full-length features as it is all-Fields, all-the-time, and has some of his best bits. Although Fields mostly wrote his own material, only this and "The Bank Dick" in this set are all his; in the other films he has to share time with other performers and other writers and the films suffer for it as a result.
"It's a Gift" is a classic. "The Bank Dick" has a lot of good stuff and many consider it a classic as well. I am especially fond of the "hearty hand clasp"; the bit referred to in my title above; and the interaction between Fields, Shemp Howard, Franklin Pangborn and "Michael Finn" in the Cafe. It is a true Fields foray, complete with non-sequiters, side-trips, and throw-away-lines.
"You Can't Cheat an Honest Man" has too many diversions for Edgar Bergen/Charlie McCarthy and a silly romance, but there are some good bits with Fields in the Circus ("Give Queenie! Cease Queenie!") and badgering apprentice Grady Sutton ("There's too much of the tomboy in you...") and customers alike ("Count yer change before leaving the window! No mistakes rectified!"). And the finale at the Upper Class Snobs party is a gas with a slew of his patented acerbic asides ("Quite a little wikiup! Where's the mob?") while Fields tells snake stories ("he sank his teeth into the Marauder's fetlock...and rattled for a Constable") causing pandemonium and fainting spells for his daughter's future mother-in-law ("pay no attention, she's been drinking too much!").
"My Little Chickadee" with Mae West is very disappointing. Fields has some good bits, especially describing a fight with a bar patron named Chicago Molly ("Ever kick a woman wearing a corset? Why I almost broke my great toe!" She came back next week and beat us both up. "Yeah, but she had another woman with her! Gray haired lady...") But too much of the film is inane Mae West flirtations with the good and bad guy of the town. Only fast-forwarding to Fields made it bearable for me.
Finally, "International House" is one of those curious 1930's mish-mashes that are really variety shows, this time with a mix of comedians and actors (Burns & Allen, Stu Irwin), musical groups including Cab Calloway, and a dopey plot. Fields brings in some needed comedy and some of that a bit risque, especially toward the end with the car, the girl, and the cat. It is more a curiosity than a fully realized film.
So this box set is a mixed bag including one for-sure (to my mind) classic (It's a Gift), one many consider a classic (The Bank Dick), one flawed but good film (You Can't Cheat an Honest Man), one flawed and mostly a dud film (My Little Chickadee), and one curio (International House). You can see that the first two films in which Fields had overall authorship and control, are the best. Worth it for those.
Two gems, two OK, one incidental. .......2007-02-12
To learn about the set, you need go no further than Amazon's own detailed and excellent review so here are a few additional comments:
- "It's A Gift" and "The Bank Dick" have a lot of similarities. The production values of the latter are much better than the former. In both films, Fields is surrounded by awful families, in the former openly antagonistic and in the latter slovenly and disinterested. The films are arguably his very best because his humour appears in its purest form. There are endless one liners and excellent supporting casts. Fields is likeable in both because he is vulnerable, a victim and a relentless optimist who sails through each situation oblivious to the mayhem he may create around him. In both films, he is sympathetic, comes out on top and you cheer.
- In both "My Little Chickadee" and "You can't Cheat an Honest Man", he is not a very nice person and accordingly audience sympathy is significantly reduced. He occupies equal screen time with Mae West in the former and Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy in the latter. Both teamings were famous. His quips with McCarthy are a continuation of his radio feud with the dummy and are quite funny. The encounter with West, however, is disappointing. The anticipation is greater than the reality. Censorship had removed the sting from her "act" and the film grinds to a halt almost everytime she appears as she swaggers across the screen, raises her eyebrows and delivers her quips. The second film, also, is not very well made and suspiciously like a series of gags linked together. It becomes tedious.
- "International House" is a screwy all star film, very typical of Paramount in 1933. It is full of radio performers like Burns and Allen and Fields steals the film. His encounter with Gracie Allen is hilarious.
The prints of the films are excellent and the DVD contains a very informative Biography Program of Fields which adds a lot to the package. The set is good value.
Great classics.......2007-01-09
The movies are good fun of a by-gone day. It really helped to have the subtitles because the characters tend to muddle under their breath alot and without the subtitles, you would miss some of the hilarious lines.

Customer Reviews:
What can I say?.......2007-05-30
This movie scared the hell out of me when I was a little kid. Is there any other service for a B movie like this? The dark elements of the woman being suicidal, etc. made it even creepier, for a 50's horror movie. I can see it being re-made, sort of Independence Day mixed with Night of the Living Dead, only the zombies would be robots. I think I'm having an Ed Wood moment...
A little below the usual B-movie standard.......2007-02-16
I hate to come down on B-movies. Even though a lot of people think they're cheesy and cheap, I feel they project a certain creativity. "It! The Terror from Beyond Space" (1958), "Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla" (1974)--but not "Target Earth" (1954) as much.
The plot and concept were perfect, in theory. A city has been evacuated due to the invasion of robots, most likely from Venus. A few stragglers must battle their way to freedom and safety.
However, the only sci-fi element used in the film was a robot--who represented a whole army of them. No spaceships--blurry laser beams and hollow acting.
"Target Earth" (1954) isn't that bad. If my copy didn't work any more, then I'd still buy another.
Old Fashion Sci Fi.......2006-11-04
I enjoyed this movie years ago when I was younger. Believe it or not it is still as good as I remember. Suspense, bad acting, crummy special effects. This is how movies were made back then without all the flash and gore this is still a good movie.
Target Earth - Not a Classic, but deserves a chance........2006-09-01
While Target Earth may not be a well known, classic Sci-Fi movie, it certainly gives a decent swing at the genre. Being Herman Cohen's first solo-produced film, Target Earth most definately IS science fiction. The plot of the film is one of the most frightening and classic ideas in the anals of sci-fi - that of the Earth being invaded by beings from another world. The threat in Target Earth, however, is an encroaching vanguard of robots which precede the actual alien invasion. A novel idea indeed. The acting in TE is good, with Richard Denning (Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Day the World Ended, The Black Scorpion) cast as the hero.
If you enjoy watching and collecting classic sci-fi from the 1950s, then Target Earth will make an excellent addition to your DVD library.
"Denning...Crowley...Grey...Reeves ~ Target Earth (1954)...Herman Cohen".......2006-09-01
VCI Home Video and Allied Artists presents "TARGET EARTH: (1954) (75 mins B&W) . . . under Sherman A. Specal footnote, producer Herman Cohen (August 27, 1925 - June 2, 2002) was a producer of B-movies during the 1950s, who helped to popularize the teen horror movie genre with films like the cult classic "I Was a Teenage Werewolf" (1957)...his motion picture career began at his local cinema, the Dexter Theater in Detroit, during his preteen years; he worked there as a "gofer" and later as an usher...his next stop was assistant manager of Detroit's Fox Theater. After a Marine Corps hitch, Cohen worked as sales manager for the Detroit branch of Columbia Pictures, then relocated to Hollywood and worked in the publicity department of Columbia there. He produced his first movies for Jack Broder's Realart Pictures in the early 1950s and made several subsequent pictures for Allied Artists and United Artists. Cohen made exploitation history in the mid-1950s when he began producing some of American International's earliest hits, among them the cult favorite "I Was a Teenage Werewolf." (1957) featuring unknown horror actor Michael Landon as a troubled teenager and Whit Bissell as the primary adult. It was written and produced by cult film producer Herman Cohen, it was made on a very low budget but grossed as much as US$2,000,000 per week in its early weeks of release, and was one of the most successful films released by AIP (American International Pictures)..Herman Cohen's filmography, The Bushwhackers (1952), Kid Monk Baroni (1952), Bela Lugosi Meets a Brooklyn Gorilla (1952), Battles of Chief Pontiac (1952), River Beat (1954), Target Earth (1954), Magnificent Roughnecks (1956), Dance with Me Henry (1956), The Brass Legend (1956), Crime of Passion (1957), I Was a Teenage Werewolf (1957), I Was a Teenage Frankenstein (1957), Blood of Dracula (1957), How to Make a Monster (1958), Horrors of the Black Museum (1959), The Headless Ghost (1959), Konga (1961), Black Zoo (1963), A Study in Terror (1965), Berserk! (1968), Django il bastardo (1969), Crooks and Coronets (1969), Trog (1970), Craze (1973), Gatto dagli occhi di giada, Il (1977)...In the 1960s and 1970s, he began producing horror films in the United Kingdom, working with such stars as Joan Crawford in "Berserk"! and "Trog" and Jack Palance in Craze. In 1961, he returned to his roots in Detroit purchasing the Fox Theater he had worked for in his youth. By the late 1970s, Cohen was working more in writing and distribution than in film production. He founded Cobra Media, a domestic distribution company, in 1981. Cohen died of throat cancer June 2, 2002.

Wes Craven served as executive producer on this direct-to-video chiller about a group of friends who discover that the remote island they've chosen as a vacation spot is home to a wild pack of attack dogs. After dispatching a sailboater and his bikini-clad girlfriend, the canines (which look more cuddly than ferocious) pick off the interloping friends with all-too-human cunning; the survivors have just enough time to discover that the mutts are the product of military genetic experiments to create unstoppable attack dogs. Director Nick Mastrandrea (a longtime production associate of both Craven and George Romero) lends a professional look to his debut feature, and gets decent performances from his cast (which includes Lost's Michelle Rodriguez, Taryn Manning, and Oliver Hudson), but the script is tired almost from page one, and the resulting action and gore do little to help this indie picture stand out from the rest of the horror crowd. Dog lovers with soft hearts should be forewarned that the CGI stand-ins for the animal actors endure some gruesome abuse in the course of the picture. --Paul Gaita
Product Description
A group of friends (Michelle Rodriguez, Taryn Manning, Hill Harper and Oliver Hudson) fly away to a deserted island for the weekend, an island once controlled by a special canine research unit. They soon realize that this beautiful getaway will become their biggest nightmare. Inspired by the horror classics, Cujo and The Birds. The Breed takes you into the jaws of a flesh eating pack of wild dogs, genetically engineered to hunt and kill. Outnumbered and trapped they struggle to outsmart and outrun this terrifying species.

MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ IS THE BOMB!!!.......2007-07-02
THE BREED IS A SUSPENSEFUL AND ENTERTAINING HORROR/THRILLER!
THE ACTORS WERE OKAY...BUT MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ IS SUCH A HOT AND SEXY ACTRESS THAT ANY MOVIE WITH HER IS A WINNER!
THIS FILM GAVE HER A CHANCE TO DRESS UP SEXY AND SHOW OFF THAT FINE DERIERE OF HERS!
a real rabid dog film that really really barfs.......2007-07-01
Barf!
I watched this film, expecting something interesting. It starts off as if it is an updated version of the interesting but hokey film THE KILLER SHREWS.
Expectations by the cast are raised. Some of the relationships seem good enough. Some of the interplay works, but ultimently, it sinks.
Why? Because no one gets out alive. In KILLER SHREWS the people keep their wits about them, use what is at hand to escape and get off the island. Here, they all die.
If you want to see a better update of THE KILLER SHREWS, watch TREMORS. It's the same idea, same use of "things at hand" and use of the mind.
Avoid this shaggy dog. You can see that it is being remaindered for nickles.
Not making any dog jokes for a review title.......2007-06-30
First of all, this wasn't a very good movie. It was pretty predictable and pretty much standard fare as members of the cast get picked off one by one by the creature(s) of the film. Some die heroically as they sacrifice themselves for the rest of their group and some die just from being stupid in a horror movie. The young people (I guess they are college students) are some of the brightest people I have have ever seen. They are master electricians, mechanics and engineers. A whole group of McGivers who can fix or alter any gadget available to do whatever is necessary at the time. A very resourceful group. Anyway these 5 land on this island where earlier 2 other people met their fates and they find that roaming the island is a union of dogs who are above average in intelligence and organization and who are also determined to wipe out any humans unfortunate to visit the island. What this film comes down to is kind of a battle of wits between college students and dogs. While hokey, this film was at least watchable. There was one scene however that borders on unforgetable. A wild dog is attacking one of the girls and one of our hero guys thinks he's Robin Hood, so he takes a bow and arrow to shoot the dog off the girl's leg. This is filmed in slow motion, so that dog, girl and shooter can all take the time to watch the flight of the arrow, to the point where our shooter actually lowers the bow after he shoots so he can watch the shot. The girl is then forever thankful that they never tried the apple on the head shot out of William Tell. After this disasterous shot, the same guy then proceeds to quick aim and nail a dog leaping through the air. Talk about improving your aim!!! Anyway, I give this movie 2 stars. I'm neutral on the acting. Nothing great, but the actors really don't embarrass themselves either. It's not a very good movie, but at least it can keep your attention for about an hour and a half.
THE BEST KILLER DOG MOVIE EVER MADE.......2007-06-25
Imagine CUJO then multiply it by ten, and you get WES CRAVEN'S THE BREED. It's kind of like a slasher movie, only with dogs. Characters wander off alone, and then are attacked. There's no phone, and the movie takes place at a cabin in the middle of nowhere so there's no chance of anyone coming to the rescue.
THE BREED is a fun little action/horror movie with plenty of jump-out-of-your-seat moments. It starts off kind of slow, taking good bit of time for character development. In most movies like this, that's a bad thing. However, I liked the characters in this movie.
I'd recommend THE BREED to anyone who likes killer dog movies.
Wes Craven is toying around .......2007-06-22
Really kind of disappointed with Craven's work in the last several years, and this movie is just more proof of that feeling. With "The Breed" he does bring out some scary options for the typical characters he has. In this movie they are of course just a bunch of college students on some vacation getaway on an island that formerly housed some secret government test facility that experimented with dogs.
It has the usual problem presented which has the youths trying to figure out a plan of escape as well as at times, a plan of attack. In the end I just felt like this movie was sub standard slash that did not have enough staying power to make me feel like it had any value to be viewed again. Craven needs to concentrate on getting more intricate scripts that are followed up by some better actors, but that costs more money so I am not expecting anything spectacular from him anytime soon.

Classics -- Done Right.......2007-03-13
Bernard Shaw in my mind is the greatest playwright we've ever had. I prefer him even to Shakespeare (but, shoot, we can have 'em both, so why quibble?). This collection offers a simply great Devil's Disciple and Arms and the Man plus a Heartbreak House to die for. Mrs. Warren's Profession is good, and I have not yet seen The Millionairess or Pygmalion, but I imagine that they, too, are quite up to snuff. If you love Shaw, this is a must for your library. And you'll want your kids and theirs to share it, too. These plays can be watched again and again without tarnishing their greatness.
The Shaw Collection.......2007-03-09
I love - love - love this collection. Most of these 6 plays contain "Bonus Plays" - including the play ANDROCLES AND THE LION which is very dear to my heart. Further, there are Bonus Programs included. If you are a Shaw fan at all - this set is a MUST. You won't be disappointed! Well done!
Masterful productions of Shaw Masterpieces.......2006-08-01
All-star productions rarely seen in this country of some of Shaw's best plays: worth watching again and again.
Shaw for More.......2006-07-22
If you have any interest in Bernard Shaw this is a must package.
The plays presented here are well acted and directed. As a collection they present a wonderful overview of Shaw's developement as a playwright and thinker. Although not a bomb in hand revolutionary Shaws was presenter of words and ideas. Thesew presenments help to make him the father of the modern English drama. These plays are little gems filled with wit, insight and hold up quit well on this age of shock for shock sake.
More Shaw than you can shake a stick at.......2006-05-29
With the 150th anniversary of George Bernard Shaw's birth fast approaching (July 26), BBC Warner celebrates the Irish playwright by collecting together ten of his most famous and representative plays, produced by the BBC during the 1970's and 80's with some of the finest British actors of the age, and making them available on six DVDs which also feature documentaries on his life and works. With a total run time of over 11 hours, this collection also represents an excellent bargain at $7 per disc or approximately $3.76 per hour. Where else can you find entertainment at this level of writing, acting, directing, and producing for even twice the price?
The only caveat may be the lack of a live theatre audience. I'm assuming most people watching these DVDs are alive, but will probably not watch them in a theatre with others. The absence of this live theatre audience, especially one schooled in the particular genres popular to theatregoers of Shaw's time, may prove somewhat alienating for some, especially as the dialogue and plot recall a more literary era with social conventions that are no longer conventional. We still produce Shaw, however, because his irony, wit and verbal agility were never ends unto themselves, even if they sweetened his less-palatable moral truths. Shaw the playwright was never far removed from Shaw the polemicist, and we would honor him best on this anniversary by remembering this.

Let's face it, sometimes you just want to watch some fluff. The ever-expanding subgenre of cheerleader cinema offers dependable fluff, of which Man of the House is a shiny, frivolous example. After a multiethnic cheerleading squad witnesses a mob execution, Texas Ranger Roland Sharp (Tommy Lee Jones, The Fugitive, Men in Black) is assigned to protect them. That's all you need to know--a formulaic plot follows, but the filmmakers recognizes that the formula is known by all so they doesn't waste time with unnecessary exposition. Instead, we go straight to amusing scenes of Sharp teaching the unruly (and scantily clad) girls some discipline and the girls teaching Sharp to loosen up and forge a better relationship with his estranged daughter. It's a one-joke movie, but thanks to Jones' leathery hound-dog face and cowpoke gravitas, the contrast between the girls and Sharp keeps being funny. Of its kind, Man of the House isn't in the same league as Bring It On (pretty much the ne plus ultra of cheerleader movies), but it's head and shoulders over the likes of Sugar & Spice. Also featuring Cedric the Entertainer (Barbershop), Anne Archer (Fatal Attraction), and R. Lee Ermey(Full Metal Jacket). --Bret Fetzer
Description
When five perky cheerleaders witness the murder of a drug bust informant, they require 'round-the-clock surveillance to keep from being the next victims. Enter tough-as-nails Texas Ranger Lt. Roland Sharp (Tommy Lee Jones), who masquerades as their assistant coach and camps out in their campus digs. But these feisty foxes just want to have fun, and the buttoned-down Sharp learns it's no easy task to keep the uncontrollable coeds in line and out of harm's way. Cedric the Entertainer joins this spirited cast in a comedy that busts out with high energy, pride, and the joy of a Texas Ranger getting in touch with his feminine side.

Good not great!.......2007-04-07
Having been a student at the University of Texas some years ago, I was more interested in how students would be portrayed in this film.
The "UT cheerleaders" were made to look as if they were inept and stupid. Their parts in the film reminded me of those "blond" jokes.
The movie is supposed to be a comedy. It did have some funny moments. I enjoy watchng Tommy Lee Jones in any genre of movie though. He is a very good actor. It was great to see him wearing a "TEXAS" shirt. Go Horns!!!
The Longhorn Band was great to listen to as well even though their appearance was brief.
Over-all, this movie gets a "C"
Tommy Lee Jones will make you laugh yourself sad.......2006-12-07
IMHO, Tommy Lee Jones has never made a bad film. He's just too talented and has too much of a presence for anything that he's in to fail. I think we should all give thanks for that. If I was going to point out anything negative about TLJ is that he could not act his way out of paper bag.
A paper bag made out of toilet paper.
Single-ply.
I mean, what the shiznit! He plays the exact same role in every movie. The stoic tough guy with an attitude and Wranglers that are a whisper too tight. You know what I'm talking about. My advice to you, Tommy? Get yourself to a community college immediately and take Acting 101, because brother, you can only go up. It's like Tommy, come on! Expand the repetoire a little bit.
Cedric is awesome as the fat guy.
Nice cool and fun movie.......2006-08-21
What this movie lacks in consistency of plot, it makes up in humor. The story deals with Tommy Lee Jones protecting his witnesses of a murder from the bad guys, just that these witnesses are cheerleaders! So Jones is in his element as the unemotional and super-stiff cop, in charge of a bunch of bubbly teenagers. A slightly sad part about this movie is that it touches some interesting themes and characters, but does little in completely realising the potential of these characters or the complexity of their interplay. But there are loads of situations where there is wonderful humor, accentuated by the contrasting cast!
The plot has several holes and honestly is not really gripping, with too many side threads grabbing attention, but then this is one movie to be seen with an open mind and with the intent of enjoying the light hearted comedy that it is! Definitely watchable.
Serious Tommy Lee Jones and Five Bubbly Cheerleaders: Just OK Fluffy Comedy.......2006-03-29
One dead serious Texas Ranger played by Tommy Lee Jones must protect the five witnesses for the prosecution. And the five witnesses happen to be unruly and bubbly cheerleaders of the Texas University. The story sounds thin and weak, and actually it is much weaker than that of Whoopie Goldberg's hit movie `Sister Act,' but thanks to the dead-pan humor of Tommy Lee Jones, `Man of the House' manages to be an OK entertainment.
From the not-so-great opening including one now stale `cow humiliation' gag, you know the film itself does not take itself seriously. The blend of actions and comedy does not go well, especially when we see embarrassed Cedric the Entertainer holding a very, very dirty cell phone in his hand, and some cardboard characters getting killed in the alley.
The film gets better when it introduces the five cheerleaders. The dialogues exchanged between Tommy Lee Jones' Texas Ranger and the cheerleaders (who just want to have fun even after witnessing killing!) are not particularly witty, some based on the typical wrong idea that cheerleaders are not bright, but still work with Tommy Lee Jones' comic acting that could be seen in `Men in Black.' Actually, you mighty see no difference in two roles, one Roland Sharp Texas Ranger of this film and Agent K in `MIB.' I rememered Robert DeNiro who is virtually doing the same dead-serious comic turn since `Analyze This.'
The cheerleaders you see here are intentionally stereotyped ones, so don't expect that Monica Keena, Kelli Garner, Christina Millian, Paula Garces, and Vanessa Ferlito do real cheerleading. They are there as eye-candy, and though one of them seems to adore Tommy Lee's character, the director seems to have chosen to just drop the theme. After all, when Tommy Lee Jones meets them, and another elder female character, professor of literature played Ann Archer, the film has nothing to do except for showing funny bits of comedy (like those of TV sitcoms) about the clashing egos between the man and the girls, which are certainly enjoyable to see, and some obligatory set-pieces that keeps the story moving, which ends with a predictable conclusion.
The director is Stephen Herek, whose CV includes `The Might Ducks' Charlie Sheen's `The Three Musketeers' `Holy Man' and `Rock Star.' And don't forget `Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure.' If you have seen any of these fairly entertaining, but otherwise undistinguished films, you know what you will see in `Man of the House.' Take it for what it is, and enjoy it.

Scooby-Doo is making a big comeback with several helpings on TV and new videos. The series' writers are smart enough to mildly spoof themselves, and this movie opens with Scooby, Shaggy, Daphne, Frank, and Velma solving a crime that ends with the now-classic Scooby line, "It's... [insert some administrative minion/angry neighbor/disgruntled relative], only to have the criminal bleat, "And I would've gotten away with it too, if it hadn't been for you kids!" There they meet one of Velma's idols, fright-writer Ben Ravencroft (voiced by an effective Tim Curry). Smitten Velma and gang accept his invitation to his New England hometown festival. When one of Ravencroft's ancestors suddenly swoops down from the supernatural heavens, the gang's on alert. This movie is appropriate for viewers 4 and up (although some of the animated frights may haunt sensitive viewers). It's also for their parents who may have been fans in the series' initial run. The cool and fun soundtrack's catchy tunes include a song performed by the Hex Girls, one of whom is none other than former Go-Go Jane Weidlin. If the theme song's got a country beat, that's because it's sung by Mr. Achy Breaky himself, Billy Ray Cyrus. --N.F. Mendoza

Customer Reviews:
This is not Wiccan Propaganda..........2007-05-23
Scooby and the gang help an author look for the diary of his ancestor; he claims she was wrongfully accused of using her magic for evil.
I have read many of the reviews trashing this as Wiccan Propoganda. If it were truly Wiccan Propaganda, then the supernatural element would be out! There might be spells and potions used, but a ghost trapped in a book and a giant turkey would never have been used. The supernatural parts are for entertainment...because portraying real Wicca would be uninteresting--any portrayal of a religion is most likely to be inaccurate...
1. We will never see an accurate story about the history of Islam because any portrayal of Muhammad is punishable by death.
2. "The Da Vinci Code" was attacked as trying to make people question the divintiy of Christ and accusing the Catholic Church of a major cover up--I am Christian; this movie did not make me question Christ's divinity; it reminded me that he was also human. I am Catholic...I have always thought of religion as a form of government, so I would not be surprised if there are some cover ups.
SCOOBY-DOO AND THE WITCH'S GHOST is a story that plays fair. It reveals a truth that exists in all religions...a truth that my research shows Wicca the most willing to accept--there are those who use religion for good and those who use it for evil. Religion is not good or evil within itself--it only has the "power" given to it by the practioner.
If this movie makes one question his Christian faith, then the doubts are more deep-seeded than anything in a SCOOBY-DOO story will ever bring out. If SCOOBY-DOO makes you question your faith, see a priest or a therapist.
Wicca dogma in Scooby Doo???.......2006-11-23
I saw most of this movie with my children; they watching a little afternoon TV while I cleaned. I was pretty surprised to see the content of the Wicca religion, and Wicca songs about Earth Wind and Fire sung by "nice girls" with vampire teeth. They made it sound like, "Oh we are Wicca, there is nothing wrong with that!" Another reviewer mentioned that this would never be tolerated if this movie included dogma from Judaism, Islam or Catholicism. I let them finish watching, because I wanted them to see the whole thing before I explained to them that many people in the world believe that Wicca is a religious venue for witchcraft. I am not sure if they caught the whole idea about Wicca from the movie, but you know, these tiny little minds are like sponges. Next thing you know, my daughter will be casting spells saying, "but mom, I saw it on Scooby Doo!" I agree with another reviewer that it should be clearly stated on this movie that it contains content about Wicca. I only saw it on TV, which I could have turned off. What of those who spent their good money on it and found out later that it includes positive teaching about paganism.
Wicca Propaganda Film - Hello!?!?.......2006-11-02
Not for kids, unless you want to endoctrinate them into wicca.
The ghost is real, not a masked person..........2006-10-13
Ok, from someone who partakes in _NO_ religion at all...so there!
0 spoilers.
This is the oddest Scooby-Doo i've ever seen compared to others. The character animation looks a tad bit more dramatic. The soundtrack and sound samples are much more mastered than other Scooby-Doo's. The plot is very well thought out and takes more than just a drooling smile to follow.
Now i like these elements i have listed so far, but 1 thing as mentioned by everybody else pulled 1 star from it for me...the ghost is real. In case you missed it, i'm not religious at all. However, a real ghost? No matter how many controversial elements one might find in a Scooby-Doo, a mask of some sort should be pulled away at the end (it must be so :-).
Now, for those of you that know something about Mr. Hanna or Mr. Barbera from their interviews, articles, books, etc., they _MIGHT_ of changed the plot so the ghost was not real and that's it. At some point however, for those who go looking hard and long enough, they will find what they are looking for. So the gang finally found it, so be it.
If you have children or a child and you choose not to show it to them, atleast watch it your adult-self. Scooby-Doo is a fantasy cartoon. Scooby-Doo has been portraying reality in it's very own fantasy all these years. It's really great to see the gang share with us, something alot of us consider fantasy, for themselves for a moment. If i wasn't so bent on seeing the mask flying off, i would of gave it a 5. Old habbits die hard :-).
Caution Advised, But Still Great! .......2006-07-11
This 2nd chapter takes place almost immediately after "Zombie Island" concludes. While I don't consider this 2nd chapter quite as good as "Zombie Island," this 2nd chapter nails down the formula for a good sequel. It brings back enough familiar elements (the gang), but it offers a different adventure. While this 2nd chapter is not quite as intense as "Zombie Island," it would probably still be a good idea for parents to screen it before they give it to their children. Scooby and the gang solve a mystery (at least in part) at a museum and meet the writer Ben Ravencroft. He invites the gang to visit his 'quiet' home in Massachusetts. For an animated movie, the scenery is actually quite impressive. Well, Ben and the gang discover that the town is anything but quiet due to the publicity over the possible presence of a witch's ghost. (The Mayor and the T Shirt guy bear a striking resemblance to Boss Hogg and Sheriff Roscoe.) Naturally, our favorite gang gets curious but Scooby and Shaggy are more interested in food. (Big surprise.) There is a hilarious scene where they go to a restaurant that is too good even for them. Well, Ben and our gang meet the Hex Girls who play good music and at the same time draw some suspicion. This is a difficult movie not to ruin, but I'll try. The misleads make sense upon discovery, and just when we think the movie is over, we find out that the real horror is yet to come. Though it doesn't quite pack the punch of "Zombie Island," the climax is really well done and surprisingly scarey. Again, this movie may be a little too much for young children, but older children and even some adults are bound to enjoy this.

Great family video.......2006-03-24
When you realize that this DVD features both Chevy Chase and Farrah Fawcett, you are instantly suspicious since neither have made a good film in a long time since Fletch. However, add Jonathan Taylor Thomas and the three make a believable modern-day family thrown into turmoil over Jonathan Taylor Thomas' dislike of anyone trying to win his mom's (Farrah Fawcett's) love.
When the mobsters show up chasing after Chevy Chases character, the film comes into it's fullness and makes for a great movie with a satisfying ending.
Good Family Film with Many Amusing Highlights.......2006-01-25
Starring Farrah Fawcett Majors (Sandy, the divorced mom), Chevy Chase (Jack, the hot shot lawyer boyfriend/fiance who moves in with the divorced mom) and Jonathan Taylor Thomas (son, Ben, who has unresolved feelings of abandonment due to his real dad, suddenly and unexpectedly without remorse, having left him and his mom). The film is a classic comedy where Ben does what he can to test the new "dad-to-be". In fact, his whole plan is to drive Jack out of his mom's life. The fact is ... his plan backfires.
Jack does whatever it takes to win Ben over. He even joins the Indian scouts, a group in which Ben feigns interest, which he expects will send Jack over the edge. Surprisingly, it has the opposite effect, Ben ends up looking forward to the adventures in the wild, especially a planned canoe trip. Unfortunately, it is the one time Jack does not show up ... convincing Ben, Jack is like his dad.
Bigger problems loom in th horizon for Jack, who is nearly killed by the son of a mob-type stalker and his buddies who are exacting revenge for having placed his father in jail. The climactic build up and suspense in the film is worth viewing for oneself. This is a family entertainment style film where all the problems are resolved in the end. The film is amusing and makes the viewer feel good. While much of the film is predictable, that is why it does not disappoint the viewer. Erika Borsos (erikab93)
Decent family drama, not hilarious comedy........2005-06-18
As a Chevy Chase comedy, Man of The House is far from his funniest; however, it works well as a family drama.
The story's sort of an inverted "Courtship of Eddie's Father." In this case it's the boy's mother (Farrah Fawcett) who is single, and the boy (Jonathan Taylor Thomas of Home Improvement, Tom and Huck, etc.) is wary of her new fiancee, a prosecutor named Sturges (Chase). Still feeling burnt by his ex-dad, the boy tries everything to get rid of the prospective one. Some of this is funny, like when he paints Sturges's face with Indian war paint that won't come off, and the parts that aren't funny are still interesting and help develop the characters and story. I think the film is most effective in that it demonstrates the persistence of faith necessary to build a family, as Sturges doesn't give up on the boy, but continues to try to win his friendship after each prank by the boy, and each failure of his own. Competent acting by Thomas helps the film succeed on this score.
The subplot is about a hoodlum Sturges sent to prison, and his son and his thugs trying to get revenge on the prosecutor. Mostly this is supposed to be funny, but doesn't live up to Chase's usual standards. However, it does weave a bit of suspense into the story and provides a catalyst for Sturges to finally win over the boy's sympathies, as well as a climax with some action.
The supporting cast includes George Wendt (Cheers), who's mostly serious in this role, and Art LeFleur, who's funny as an Indian Guides martinet.
If you're looking for a hilarious comedy, don't look here; but if you're in the mood for a light family drama with a well-devoloped message and some humor, Man of the House will foot the bill with one family values caveat: Chase and Fawcett move in together before they're married.
Please avoid at all costs.......2005-02-05
Chevy Chase is dreadful in the lead as Farrah Fawcett's fiance and Jonathan Taylor Thomas is annoyning as the bratty kid that's just annoyning and a loser child actor(what movies has he starred since this one). The childish plot revolves around a single mom and her brat son who hates her new fiance and then he looks for ways to have fun with the bratty son and then the movie fails to entertain and the movie is basically a Disney movie with no point, plot,or substance that you will enjoy your time doing something better like mow the lawn, build a puzzle,or trying to match the cubes on a Rubik Cube. Even Max Keeble was more funny than this unfunny, unwatchable mess. [...]

Customer Reviews:
Great movie, OK collection.......2007-06-02
The Man Who Planted Trees is a great animated short about the power of one individual to make a difference for our environment. It's an excellent film. The collection, however, pales in comparison. It's not worth the extra money-- if you want the Man Who Planted Trees, just buy the DVD of that alone.
Story telling as entertaining cultural intro.......2007-01-27
This series performs multiple functions. In the French track, storytelling can offer lessons often ignored in the native language of American students. It also can demonstrate the universality of protecting nature and politicians corrupting the best work of man. In addition to the educational value of this series, the animation is hypnotizing and wonderful.
Inspiring!!.......2007-01-13
I remember seeing "The Man who planted Trees" as a child and then, finally found out about the animated cartoon and bought it recently. Even as a child the ideas haunted you and stayed with me through out these years.
It is imagery and summation of ideas which you may even encounter on a daily basis.........but just as a poet makes usual unusual, Frederic Back's film makes it worth remembering forever.
Buy "The Man Who Planted Trees" on its own, not this boxed set.......2007-01-12
5 stars+ for "The Man Who Planted Trees" it is a gorgeous piece of animation, and beautiful heartfelt story about one man's stoic determination to restore a wind ravaged denuded landscape. Having seen The Man Who Planted Trees many years ago and loving it, I was keen to check out the animator's other work, but couldn't help but be disappointed as none of Frederic Back's other work lives up to his masterpiece The Man Who Planted Trees. Unless you are truely a diehard animation aficionado, and like to explore an artist's earlier musing's and influences i can't recommend this box set. But i highly recommend buying "The Man Who Planted Trees" on it own. Beautiful, moving and inspirational.
Exquisite storytelling.......2007-01-12
The visual and auditory journeys of these movies have enthralled friends and family members of all ages.

This should be a fun double feature!.......2007-06-14
Looking forward to Frankie and Wolfie double feature!
Fun double feature.......2007-06-05
These two films began pairing up the Universal monsters to maximize box office potential. Although the decline in quality is painfully apparent when you compare them to the first two Frankenstein films, they are still a lot of fun for anyone who loves spooky castles and torch-wielding mobs of villagers. Lon Chaney, Jr. makes for a sympathetic lycanthrope in both these films, although the Wolfman has always seemed to be a bit of a wimp to me as far as monsters go. Frankenstein's monster has been reduced to the shambling silent stereotype we know him as today. Sadly, the complexity of Boris Karloff's portrayal has been lost. In "House of Frankenstein," John Carradine puts in a terrible performance as Dracula in a subplot that should have been stricken from the script. The highlight of "House" is Karloff's performance as the evil Dr. Neimann. He projects a malevolence that can make you momentarily forget that you're watching a safe monster movie that was originally produced for kids.
How can this be?.......2007-01-04
HOW in the hell can a movie these days be 90.00 dollars? It's not like it's different from any other horror classic--I wanted it, but I'll be damned if I pay THIS price--it's ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Good fun.......2005-02-18
Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man is patchy, taking a little long to get going, and with a few lulls here and there. Still, it's fun, and it's nice to see Lugosi, having turned down the role of the Monster in 1931, finally step into Karloff's oversized boots.
House of Frankenstein is pacier and more entertaining all round, starring Karloff as a mad scientist bringing the Frankenstein Monster back to life, with the Wolf Man and an appearance from Dracula thrown in for good measure.
Definitely a guilty pleasure .......2004-09-29
Both flicks VASTLY inferior to the original "Wolf Man" & the 3 previous Frankenstein movies, but nevertheless they're a fond memory from childhood TV-watching. Pure fun hokey hokum. Poor Lugosi was pretty "long-in-the-fang" when he played Frankie, & his stunt double very visibly played the part in most of the scenes in the movie. Plus Lugosi's Frankie went blind at the conclusion of the previous "Son Of Frankenstein" & that supposedly explained why he was shambling wildly about, at one point not recognizing Chaney, etc., but the explanation (& Lugosi's dialogue) were supposedly cut from the film. Moving on, it's HIGH-larious how the(hapless-as-actor)Chaney transforms into a werewolf in a wife-beater T-shirt, his jammies, or whatever, & then apparently takes time AS A WEREWOLF to change into a black shirt. plus, the decrepit Maria Ouspenskya as Maleva the Gypsy still somehow manages to give off some granny sexuality. She must have been a hottie when a young woman! LOL!!

Typical "B" grade horror flick.......2007-04-01
I purchased this video just to see Colleen Camp and Sondra Locke before they got famous. The movie was a bit over the top and alot of unnecessary mayhem.
Strange movie.......2007-01-12
This movie is strange. Sort of a cross between a thiller and a S/M movie. Not one that most people would like and it should not be shown to Childern.
"This motion picture is based on a true story...".......2006-03-04
A nasty little affair, Death Game features cute-as-a-button Colleen Camp and not-quite-as-attractive-as-the-aforementioned-fastening-device Sandra Locke as a couple of giggling psychos prone to violence and clotheslessness that converge on poor sucker Seymour Cassel. After getting his ass kicked by his wife in croquet, Seymour is left all alone at home. On a dark and stormy night soon after, Sandra and Colleen show up lost and wanting to use the telephone. They warm themselves by the fire, Seymour serves some hot chocolate, and Colleen gets some "really great vibes." The festivities begin innocently enough with Seymour making the wet and soapy with our heroines in a (thankfully!) prolonged hot tub sequence set to the tune of some seventies wacka-wacka guitar. The next morning they make breakfast and chew with their mouths open. Seymour throws them out, but they return and spray him with mace, tie him up, slap the stuffing out of him, and make a general mess of the place. As the film progresses, these freewheelin' chicks display their penchant for bondage, shrill conversation, sloppily applied makeup, and fondling each other. They whack a delivery boy with a fireplace poker and drown him in a goldfish bowl. The babes hold a mock court and sentence Seymour to "death at dawn!" The sleaze is applied indiscriminately and by the bucket loads, highlighted by plenty of nudity by Camp (and Locke as well, if that appeals to you). A gut-wrenching theme song about "good old dad...the man who made me what I am today" is repeated ad nauseating. The film was directed by Peter Traynor and features lots of lovely shots of the San Francisco area (just what I needed). The conclusion is an out-of-nowhere knee-slapper. All-in-all, it's an appalling jaw-dropper that I recommend unreservedly for those who can stomach it. "This motion picture is based on a true story. It should serve to remind us that fate allows no man to insulate himself against the evil which pervades our society."
SEXY + SCARY = AWESOME.......2005-09-27
There are no doubt dozens of untapped cinematic gold mines out there just waiting to be discovered and this is one of the best. Check out the premise: one rainy night a family man is alone in his home when two beautiful teenage girls appear at his door, apparently lost. They ask to come in to use the phone and he lets them in. Little does he know what awaits. For the next forty-eight hours, the girls have the time of their lives torturing him with sexuality and violence. They tie him up, beat him up, humiliate him and trash his house.
Sondra Locke, perhaps best known for her Clint Eastwood movies, is phenomenal as the brilliantly disturbed lead, Jackson. She is rageful and calculating and in complete control. Little touches like the ringmaster outfit she dons and the "horns" she draws on her forehead with lipstick make her character the epitome of sexy as well as undeniably frightening. (I hope to find someone like her someday-minus the psychotic tendencies, that is.)
Well known vixen Colleen Camp plays Donna, Jackson's lover and cohort. Obviously the female in the relationship, Donna has a more playful, little girl appeal about her.
Although this movie was not improved for DVD, has horrific sound quality(Seymour Cassel's voice was dubbed with someone else's), and is too dated with it's disco montage, it is quite a little treasure. I rented it a couple years ago and fell in love immediately, particularly with the Jackson character. With all the stupid remakes of today(like Psycho!), it's a pity something like this slips through the cracks. Death Game (a.k.a. The Seducers, a.k.a. Mr. Manning's Weekend) is good and deserves higher recognition.
By the way, this flick is based on a true story. Oooooooohhhh!
Every man's fantasy: to be talked to death?.......2004-12-04
In 'Death Game' Locke and Camp play a pair of women who essentially seek thrills without concern for others. As a matter of fact the more they can torture someone the more enjoyment they get from it. With a premise like this you would certainly hope they would get more mileage from it, but alas, the biggest threat they pose to their married man they have imprisoned in his own home is talking him to death. Locke and Camp are effective in their roles and can certainly turn on the sex appeal while being so menacing that you would not want to get near them. They have plenty of dialogue (too much) and a director who likes to linger on scenes too long. This comes off rather like a stage play on film. There is of course the payoff scene of Locke and Camp in a bath together which should wake you up at that point. I will not give it away, but the final scene involving the van is well shot. I watched this scene several times in slow motion and it was still effective. Overall 'Death Game' is a film with a lot of talk and a lot of tease with very little payoff considering the potential they had with the subject matter.-Bob
