Editorial Review:
Description
Effortlessly gliding from graceful travelogue to playful star-driven caprice to trenchant cautionary fable, A TALKING PICTURE is "a majestic and profound work by one of the greatest of all living filmmakers" (Chicago Tribune). Writer-director Manoel de Oliveira (I'M GOING HOME, VOYAGE TO THE BEGINNING OF THE WORLD) has created a valedictory cinematic masterpiece that balances timeless beauty with audacious theatricality in order to explore the fanciful myths and grim ironies that define Western Civilization at a millennial crossroads. In july of 2001, eight-year-old Maria Joana embarks on an ocean cruise from her native Portugal to Bombay, India accompanied by her mother, history professor Rosa Maria (Leonor Silveira). But as three mysterious and glamorous women, each played by a world-renowned film legend, board first at Marseilles (Catherine Deneuve - UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG), Naples (Bernardo Bertolucci muse Stefania Sandrelli) and Athens (Irene Papas - THE TROJAN WOMEN, ANTIGONE), their picturesque journey begins to grow in tension and complexity. When ship captain John Walesa (John Malkovich - BEING JOHN MALKOVICH) hosts a unique summit between these three international graces, the table is literally set to transform A TALKING PICTURE from a genial melancholic history lesson into an incendiary contemporary news flash. Deftly, lovingly and confidently crafting a film of subtle rhythms, deep conviction and shocking contrasts, 96 year old Manoel de Oliveira "appears unstoppable" (Boston Globe) and conclusively demonstrates he is "a master of the medium" (The New York Times). "With rare eloquence," A TALKING PICTURE "speaks to our hearts and minds about modern quandaries and eternal truths." (Chicago Tribune)

This movie follows the unwritten law of sequels: bring back the same characters and put them in similar jeopardy with slightly tweaked circumstances. Instead of a cross-country journey, this time the pet trio must get from the San Francisco airport across the Golden Gate Bridge to their suburban home. Michael J. Fox and Sally Field return as the voices of Chance the bulldog and Sassy the cat, with Ralph Waite replacing the late Don Ameche as the elderly golden retriever. Their journey features dogfights, house fires, an epic battle with a pair of petnappers, and a love affair for Chance with a stray from the other side of the bridge (Carla Gugino). Sinbad voices another dog who guides them through the mean streets of the city by the bay, and Robert Hays stars as the father, but, frankly, that hardly matters. What does is the animals' banter, and they're funny. (Ages 3 and up) --Kimberly Heinrichs
Description
Your favorite trio of talking animals is back in this action-packed Disney adventure that'll have the whole family bursting with excitement and laughter! Michael J. Fox, Sally Field, and Ralph Waite supply the voices of Chance, the American bulldog; Sassy, the Himalayan cat; and Shadow, the golden retriever -- and Sinbad speaks for their newfound canine friend, Riley -- in this critically acclaimed sequel to Disney's now-classic HOMEWARD BOUND: THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY. When the pets accidentally get separated from their vacationing owners, Chance, Shadow, and Sassy navigate the mean streets of San Francisco, trying to find their home across the Golden Gate Bridge. But the road is blocked by a series of hazards, both man and beast. It's another incredible journey for three very brave, very lovable pets, in a thrilling, funny adventure that's 'bound to please' (New York Post) the entire family!

Don't waste this one on your children: buy it for yourself. A spectacular adaptation of the Anna Sewell novel, this is faithful to the source material but creates a life of its own on the screen. Told from the point of view of the horse, it recalls a time and a place that could be both beautiful and cruel. Black Beauty faced both hardship and kindness as he passed through the hands of many owners throughout his life. Some are generous, but the agonies endured by the title character may be too harsh for small children. Unfortunately, director Caroline Thompson did not resurrect her magical touch a few years later with another animal tale, Buddy. --Rochelle O'Gorman
Description
A wondrous new version of Anna Sewell's classic about a remarkable horse and the various owners whose lives he transforms. "The most imaginative and stirring picture since The black Stallion" (Washington Times) Year: 1994 Director: Caroline Thompson Starring: Sean Bean, David Thewlis, Jim Carter

If nothing else, the powers that be behind this terrible sequel to the 1989 hit Look Who's Talking will be divinely punished for abusing John Lennon's "Jealous Guy" on the soundtrack. Until then, it's better to push memories of this movie to the back of one's memory. John Travolta and Kirstie Alley reprise their roles from the earlier film, but this time their married relationship is in trouble for sundry reasons. Adding to that complication is the arrival of a new baby (whined by Roseanne Barr) to join the previous one (quipped by Bruce Willis). Mel Brooks and Damon Wayans add their voices to those of some other kids, but this hastily patched-together follow-up wouldn't be funny no matter how may comic minds you threw in the mix. Between the shoddy script and miscasting of Barr, there's enough doom to go around in this thing, but an opening-credits sequence that manages, through crummy special effects, to turn a sperm's path toward an egg into a nauseating experience doesn't help. Stick with the original. --Tom Keogh

The human beings are almost as interesting as the title character in this surprisingly subtle and engaging film about the cross-country adventures of a smart-mouthed parrot. As director John Roberts deploys the footage, the bird becomes a vivid personality; every quizzical twist of his head is oddly expressive. The people who interact with Paulie are a quirky and interesting bunch as well, and the casting is topnotch: Tony Shalhoub (The Siege) as a Russian immigrant janitor, Cheech Marin as an open-hearted mariachi musician, and Gena Rowlands as a widowed painter in a footloose Winnebago--all are vividly eccentric individuals, memorable in their own right. There are some tired swipes at the cold-blooded meanies of Big Science (beady-eyed researcher Bruce Davison has Paulie clapped in irons), but for the most part the film respects the complexity of everyone's motivations, and that's virtually unheard of in today's Hollywood, even in films supposedly designed for grownups. --David Chute
Customer Reviews:
Great Service.......2007-05-19
I received my DVD really quick from sender. I will use their service again.
Pauli.......2007-05-18
This is just a delightful and inspring family movie. The actors all support the plot. The lessons are well illustrated. The concern for animals is strong without being dogmatic. Just a great 2 hours of enjoyment.
A movie I could send to my granddaughter!.......2007-05-17
Funny, intelligent, warm and touching - and a movie that wouldn't embarrass me if I were watching it with my 12 year old granddaughter. I'm mailing it to her immediately (she lives out-of-town). I really enjoyed this movie and I would recommend it to anyone, any age. It has something for everyone in it.
I wish Hollywood would come out with more movies like this one. The actors are great and natural. The birds and animals in this movie are amazing.
A great family movie!.......2007-05-14
"Paulie" is a sweet movie and perfert for a family video night! The parrot tells such a wonderful story of love, loss, trust - and the breaking thereof - that there are many 'moral of the story' moments! Gena Rowlands is wonderful in showing that no matter the age, or circumstance, we all have adventure within us! It may be hidden under fear and friends (in this case, Paulie) can help us 'stretch our wings'. The man who stars in this, currently seen on the t.v. show "Monk", did a wonderful job in his intent listening and resolve to help this bird - his friend. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who wants to spend an evening just 'kicking back' and enjoying a good story.
Paulie.......2007-04-23
I am a parrot owner, and loved the movie. Even non-bird fanatics will enjoy this family movie. It's captivating, touching, and children and adults can equally relate to having learning difficulties while growing up, having a pet as your best friend, to losing loved ones and romantic relationships that didn't happen as we had hoped. Throughout all of Paulie's adventures with the different characters in the movie, you're always rooting for Paulie and that he'll find his "Marie", and the ending leaves you with a "feel good" feeling. I highly recommend this to anyone, and especially bird lovers. It made me look at my parrot(whose been with me for 28 years) with a renewed sense of wonder and respect for her intelligence and wondering what's she's thinking even though she doesn't talk like Paulie!

A young boy named Owen learns the startling truth about dogs: They're actually from outer space, sent here to rule mankind. A canine agent from the star Sirius (voiced by Matthew Broderick) gets rescued from the pound by Owen (Liam Aiken) and named Hubble. As Hubble desperately tries to train a motley crew of dogs from Owen's neighborhood to behave like conquerors before the Greater Dane arrives and decides the planet's fate, the outer space pooch slowly bonds with Owen and discovers why dogs may have joined forces with humans instead of dominating them. Good Boy! will charm dog lovers in particular, but the movie has enough clever touches to engage most viewers, and it manages a sweet tone without turning cloyingly saccharine. Featuring the voices of Carl Reiner, Brittany Murphy, Delta Burke, Donald Faison, and--of all people--Vanessa Redgrave as the Greater Dane. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:
Good for all ages!.......2007-01-11
I struggle to find movies that will entertain both of my daughters (ages 2 and 8) This one fits the bill. My kids are animal lovers so anything with talking animals is a big hit. They watch this movie in our van over and over! It's not a blockbuster but it's great for kids.
Good Boy!.......2006-07-18
As a long time dog owner (and ownee) I really enjoyed this movie. It is family oriented, very warm and has a wonderful ending. In between I loved how the personalities of the various dogs were portrayed. I happen to be partial to poodles but I liked the boxer best. Would definitely recommend for light viewing.
Good Boy.......2006-06-21
I loved this movie! It was great! My favorite part was when Owen and his family were picking out the dog at the pound.Hubble(the dog)was so cute and adorable.he looked like Rasheen.
A most delighful movie for Everyone.......2006-03-04
I possibly watched hundreds of movies, and this one is surely one of the most delighful movies I have ever seen. I watched it with my dog Sultan, and he loved it as much as I did. The story is interesting and amuzing, the characters simply adorable. It touches your Heart, pleases your senses, and relaxes your mind. Could you ask for more? I would recommend this movie to everyone of all ages. You could see it again and again and it won't tire on you because there is Real Joy at its core. It aims to share this Joy with you, and it couldn't do a better job. Bravo!!!
Very good movie........2006-01-21
Good Boy: Starring Kevin Nealon, Liam Aiken, and Molly Shannon. Animal voices by: Cheech Marin, Matthew Broderick, Delta Burke, Donald Faison, Brittany Murphy, Vanessa Redgrave, and Carl Reiner.
This movie seemed to me like a cross between: Air Bud, E.T., and Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey. Granted, there were a few scenes where I said "Yeah right!" but overall, it is a warm, heartfelt movie that can be enjoyed by anyone who is willing to suspend disbelief. If you are the type that looks at movies from a critical point of view (i.e. Dogs don't talk; dogs can't jump that high, dogs can't fly, etc.) then no, you probably WON'T enjoy this movie. I know, and most other people also know that dogs don't speak English; but I was still able to enjoy the movie. And to those who watch with a "Critical eye," you complain about stuff being "Far Fetched;" no pun intended for this movie. So, I'm guessing you mainly just watch movies about stuff that actually happened, or could actually happen. If you go to rent this movie, read the back of the box first, and if you can't stand the thought of a movie with talking dogs, don't rent this movie, and don't rent Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey, or Homeward Bound: Lost In San Francisco. You'll be very upset with yourself. To the rest of us, sit back, relax, watch a movie, and just enjoy it for what it is. Nevermind that it's not entirely based in reality. If you are one of those people that only enjoy reality based stuff with no acting, go get yourself a few documentaries at the library. If you want a movie with some acting that has a basis in reality, get yourself a movie like Pearl Harbor.

When you start watching Racing Stripes, you may not be prepared for how unbelievably cute a young zebra is. A travelling circus accidently abandons an adorably helpless zebra in the middle of Kentucky on a stormy night. Fortunately, the wee zebra is found by Nolan Walsh (Bruce Greenwood, The Sweet Hereafter), a brilliant horse trainer who's given up his calling after a riding accident that killed his wife. His daughter Channing (Hayden Panettiere, Raising Helen) names the zebra Stripes and, before you know it, Stripes has grown to young adulthood and is aching to race at a nearby track. Thus begins a fairly formulaic triumph-over-adversity tale combined with talking animals--but Racing Stripes understands its formula and executes it without any pretensions. It doesn't hit the bullseye struck by Babe (an earlier triumph-over-adversity tale combined with talking animals), and there are bad puns and gags aplenty, but Greenwood's solid presence gives the movie an unexpected emotional fullness. Featuring a bizarre assortment of voices for the animals, including Whoopi Goldberg, Dustin Hoffman, Frankie Muniz, Mandy Moore, Joe Pantoliano (as a Mafioso pelican), Steve Harvey, David Spade, and Snoop Dogg. --Bret Fetzer

Racing Stripes .......2007-06-13
Racing Stripes
Stripes is a zebra that wants to compete in the Kentucky outlaw horse race. With his young jockey, Channing Walsh they compete to run in the horse race. Stripes gets made fun of because of his short legs and Mohawk. Will this young girl and her zebra surprise all the other contestants? Or will her father tell her she can't race because if the recent death of her mother for jumping horses?
This is one of my favorite movies. Frankie Muniz as the voice of Stripes just makes the movie so funny and Hayden Panettiere as Channing Walsh is such an amazing actress. Hayden has played in Bring It On All or Nothing and Ice Princess. I think her best movie would be Ice Princess. She was a great actress in Racing Stripes but it wasn't her best. Be ready to ride this movie, it's very exciting and entertaining.
This movie is great for all ages and its funny. Kids will love all the talking animals like Reggie the roster, Franny the goat, Tucker the old yet wise miniature horse, Stripes the zebra that thinks he's a horse, Sandy the white filly and Buzz and Scuzz the brother flies. You have got to see this wonderful movie of 2004.
This movies rating id PG, its 1 hr 42mins long and was produced by David Eggby.
Fun Movie.......2007-05-21
This is a must movie for the whole family from Great Grandpa down to the newest great grandkid to watch. We all enjoyed it very much.
Hilarious.......2007-03-26
This is by far one of the funniest, most enjoyable movies I have seen in a long time. I will watch it many times I'm sure. I am a 56 yr. old female who loves to laugh.
OK... but doesn't hold child's interest long.......2007-03-13
Overall the DVD was good and very much appropriate for young children. However, after a couple of weeks it had fallen to the back of his preference list. We've not watched it in over a year now. I guess this isn't so different from any other DVD we have.
I would recommend this for young children and provides them with access to seeing farm animals. Good learning experience without the violence and negative concepts often portrayed in movies.
my son's favorite.......2006-11-20
one of the best things about this movie is the croatian synchronization - it is brilliant!
animal animation is done seamlessly and totally naturally.
plot is slightly predictable (to adults) while human acting is children movie black/white sort - not the movie i would wanna watch over and over like i do "cars", for example.
however, the story is also the best thing about the movie -from parents' point of view. i want my son to watch films with no violence and shooting and i want him learn about values, friendship and courage, holding on to his dreams, about daring and achievement.
good family fun.

Description
A nostalgic favorite of those who grew up in the '70's, The Day of the Dolphin stars George C Scott as a scientist who trains dolphins to speak, only to find them enmeshed in a government assassination plot. The successful directing and writing duo of Mike Nichols and Buck Henry (The Graduate, Catch-22) team-up again to adapt this adventure fantasy from the popular novel by Roger Merle. Featuring an Academy Award-nominated score by Georges Delerue (Day for Night, Contempt).

The Day of the Dolphin.......2007-06-08
This is a great thriller & one of my husband's favorites.
But The Dolphin Seemed So Playful.....Until It Tried To Kill Me!.......2007-04-14
Ever seen a political thriller that employs dolphins as potential assassins? Why the heck not? As a curiosity, it's hard to beat "The Day of the Dolphin." Bringing together a bizarre amalgamation of talent-- this 1973 film stars George C. Scott (a few years after his Oscar for "Patton"), was written by Buck Henry (known mostly for comedy), and was directed by Mike Nichols (yes, that Mike Nichols)! Nichols has done everything from "The Graduate" and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" through to the more current "Closer" and "Angels in America"--and this bit of sci-fi seems at odds with most of his resume. Curiously, though, he took "Dolphin" over from Roman Polanski (Polanski dropped out when his wife, Sharon Tate, was murdered by the Manson family). Heck, the backstory alone is cause enough to check out this picture!
Telling the story of a dolphin research facility, Scott plays its leader. Financed by a large corporation, their work is largely unknown even by their sponsors. They have been working on communication techniques and their unorthodox secrecy starts to raise various suspicions. Paul Sorvino, as a mysterious intruder, starts to poke around menacingly and all that is of value to Scott and his team is threatened. Publicly revealing the truth behind their experiments to their bosses, they now find themselves pawns in a larger scheme. It's hard to determine who to trust as potential allies are shown to be villains and vice versa. And caught in the middle are the dolphins who are to be exploited as bomb carrying assassins.
While, in truth, "The Day of the Dolphin" advertises itself as a political thriller with a sci-fi component--I think you'd be better off going into the film knowing nothing about it. But it seems unlikely that anyone could do that. The film's plot is used to sell the picture, so any potential surprises are given away in its marketing. The assassination scheme doesn't manifest itself until the second half of the film and might have made a great twist, but, as is, it's actually something that the audience is anticipating. While the political element is prominently advertised, it is quite vaguely defined and relatively superfluous. "The Day of the Dolphin" works best as sci-fi. Not sci-fi as in aliens and different worlds--but in its truest sense, Science employed as Fiction. The research done with the dolphins incorporates reality and fantasy in a nice combination, and works because it is understated. "Dolphin" also shows man's influence over nature (both good and bad) and how our need for technological superiority can lead to unforeseen and harmful consequences. The dolphins trust that man is their friend, but that friendship is something that can ultimately be used for evil. This ends up being largely a relationship piece, and as odd as it might sound--the central relationship is between Scott and a dolphin.
Sorvino and Scott are both quite good and carry the weight of the film. And if the idea of seeing George C. Scott running around in very short shorts drives you insane with lust, then that's an added bonus. Overall an interesting film, if not a great one. Recommended because it works--but it's also something of an oddity! Just don't expect the rousing adventure the DVD cover might promise you, this is more quietly intriguing. KGHarris, 04/07.
They have now changed the cover to the one I have.......2007-01-07
When I wrote this review they had a different photo of the DVD depicting a female with her midriff showing but mine was just George and the dolphins on the right and a very slim picture of a private airplane in flight, and guys shooting into the water and a boat explosion below that on the left (hard to really tell what they were unless you saw the movie). Now it is the same one. I had checked by putting in the UPC code and this came up. Mine has a copyright date of 2005 instead of 2006, though, and mine has the extra features: Interviews with screenwriter Buck Henry and co-stars Leslie Charleson and Edward Herrman, The World's Most Amazing Dolphin Trivia Gallery and Dolphin Bios. I think the features are probably in the DVD on this page too - just not listed here. I thought I had to purchase the one with the "sexier" front cover but received the more modest one -- I didn't buy it from Amazon.
I have loved this movie for years. They used to advertise this movie in the 80's on KBHK-TV Ch 44 San Francisco, CA, with the music from Saint-Saens Aquarium but that music is not in the movie / soundtrack.
Wonderful Film.......2006-04-22
I guess you could say I am a person who likes films that says what if..This one is that a person can teach a dolphin to talk in human language. It is a touching, wonderful, interesting story, about mankind in all its goodness and other full of greed and explotation of anything to make a the almighty buck.
One Of The All Time Best.......2006-02-19
This movie is one of my all time favorites. George C. Scott plays an obsessed director of an aquatic facility which trains dolphins to communicate with humans. It has a good story line and action scenes(for the 70's) right up until the heartwrenching end. This is one of those movies you can't stop thinking about long after you've viewed it.

Just A Good Relaxing Movie!.......2007-05-05
I have to admit I'm a sucker for movies with dogs in them, since I am a true dog lover. I found Karate Dog to be just adorable. When the movie first starts Cho Cho's (Karate dog) master is murdered, and we learn that Cho Cho can talk. Yes, it is a tad sad when the master dies, but it gets better fast. When the police arrive, in comes LAPD computer expert Peter, who is not respected by his peers. Cho Cho was told to talk to only the one who seeks the truth, and Peter did. He follows him home, reveals himself to him and after Peter gets over the shock they become partners in solving his masters murder. This is where all the action begins.
This really is a very cute story that you would be happy to sit and share with your children. It has adventure, humor and a good storyline and believe me the ending is priceless. We giggled through this one, and I believe you will too. Well worth a night or a saturday afternoon. Enjoy!
YOU'LL GET A KICK FROM THIS SILLY MOVIE.......2006-09-13
Alrhough filled with familiar cliches, characters and special effects, THE KARATE DOG should provide an entertaining ninety minutes of family entertainment. Simon Rex (the last two SCARY MOVIES) stars as a computer savvy policeman who finds himself in possession of a talking karate dog (voiced by Chevy Chase). Together they plan to solve the murder of the dog's beloved owner (the late Pat Morita) at the hands of corporate mogul Jon Voight (deliciously hammy). All this while falling in love with fellow officer Jaime Pressly.
The jokes are not tremendously funny but the movie's so warm-spirited and all the dogs and cats as cute as can be, so forget the plot and just enjoy the merriment.

Customer Reviews:
Cute movie...better for older kids........2007-01-11
This movie is cute for my 8 year old but it's not really one she wants to watch over and over in our van for long trips. It has some sad parts and the story line is too heavy for my 2 year old to stay interested. It's very cute and enjoyable but is more a one time movie in our opinion. I'm still glad to own it.
Not for kids..........2006-09-23
This movie is NOT for young kids even though the back of the DVD case shows a dog getting a bath and states "this is a family movie". My kids were balling their eyes out when the dogs were getting put to sleep. I should have watched it first - LIVE AND LEARN!!!
Basically a 90 minute PETA commerical........2006-08-28
First off, I grew up with dogs, I have an affection for dogs. I even have respect for PETA and their effort to ethically treat animals. That's a good mission to have.
But, that is a message that does not play well as this 90 minute movie. I mean with quotes like this "Maybe there are people like me behind the eyes of another creature." just went too far for me.
This movie was too melodramtic and my wife was calling out the plot points about one minute before each one which made for an abysmal screenplay. The musical score was fine enough as was the melody.
If you want a better dog movie, go get something like Old Yeller or Where the Red Fern Grows. Both are probably equally molodramtic but at least they have a better story/screenplay to carry the story to the conclusion.
This movie is literally for the dogs.
Excellent film........2006-06-07
Fluke (Carlo Carlei, 1995)
There is book, and there is film. And every once in a while, there are book and film that are utterly unlike one another, and yet both are brilliant. Perhaps the best-known example of this phenomenon is Stephen King's novel and Tobe Hooper's TV miniseries 'Salem's Lot, which bear at best a passing resemblance as narrated by a gallon drunk. Fluke comes off the same way, and despite Carlei's ham-handedness, this movie works.
First, you have to realize this movie is based on a novel by James Herbert. The phrases "James Herbert" and "family film" are incapable of existing in the same sentence without quotes around them, or some sort of weird dimensional rift will open in the Universe, and the things that come through will eat all humanity, but not before subjecting it to weird perverse tortures. (No, they're not Cenobites. The things in James Herbert's imagination eat Cenobites for breakfast and use the nails as toothpicks.) So one has to wonder, as I have for the past ten years, how any movie based on a James Herbert novel could possibly be called a "wonderful family film" by, erm, at least one critic blurbed on the DVD cover. I forget which. Then I remembered 'Salem's Lot, and still had some hope that we might get a good film out of it (film adaptations of James Herbert novels tend to be bloody boring-- they cut out all the good bits to avoid the video nasty laws). Then they attach an unknown writer-director and Matthew Modine, a guy whose career was going nowhere fast in 1995 (though it did pick up again soon after this, and has almost hit its previous level). I got to the point where the only hope I had for this flick lay in Eric Stoltz, whom I have always loved and will always love, no matter how awful the films in which he appears (yes, I even forgave him Anaconda. He needed the money. Honest). So, finally, I got the chance to sit down and actually watch the thing... and it really is wonderful. It bears about as much resemblance to the James Herbert novel upon which it is based as the American all-beef Ball Park bears to its wondrous ancestor the haggis, but as with the scary meat products, each is great in its own way.
Tom Johnson (Modine, recently in Transporter 2) and Jeff Newman (Stoltz, recently of The Butterfly Effect) are partners. In the opening scene, the two of them are racing down a country road. Johnson pulls up alongside Newman's car and tries to get him to pull over so they can talk. Newman ignores him, but Johnson doesn't get too long to try-- he ends up playing chicken with a truck, losing, and going over an embankment to his death. Thanks to the magic of special effects, we see his soul fly off and inhabit an Irish Setter pup. (And through the magic of film, you can get an Irish Setter pup from a mom who looks kind of like a collie mix.) The pup, who eventually becomes the title character, has a series of very nasty adventures early in his life (the first half-hour of this film makes me wonder why anyone called it a family film-- it is relentlessly depressing) before meeting Rumbo (xXx's Samuel L. Jackson), a big Saint Bernard who offers to teach him the ropes. Fluke is unhappy with his life as a dog, however; he has recurring dreams of Newman and his family, and he feels that his family is in danger.
First, the bad things about the movie. Carlei is overly ham-handed with a number of his moral lessons (especially in the final voice-over, which any editor worth his salt should have burned rather than exposing it to the elements). If you're looking at the film as something to watch with the kiddies, you may have an uncomfortable time answering some questions from the younger ones about death and vivisection that are likely to be raised in the opening half-hour of the film. And the kid who voices Fluke-as-pup (Sam Gifaldi of the animated series Hey! Arnold) sounds as if he's reading, woodenly, off a teleprompter. The end, while not actually leaving any loose ends dangling, feels a little frayed. And Nancy Travis' line "...he needs a bath. He's filthy!"is perhaps the most unintentionally funny ever voiced in kids' films; you will never see so well-groomed and well-fed a road dog as Fluke.
The good things: well, the rest of the movie. The opening half-hour, while relentless, has no single scenes that will traumatize a kid any more than some of the stuff Disney put in their animated flicks when we were kids. Modine and Jackson have a great chemistry between them, and when Fluke starts spending most of his time around humans, things ride the line of sappy without ever quite crossing over. Most of all, Lynn Stalmaster, the High King of Casting Directors, made one of the most inspired choices of his career in Eric Stoltz. I can't explain why without ruining the crux of the film, but let's just say it would've been hard to achieve the effect the movie did without Eric Stoltz playing Newman. Perfect, perfect, casting.
Unless you're a diehard James Herbert fan who can't separate Fluke-the-film from Fluke-the-book, you'll probably end up loving this movie despite yourself. Yeah, yeah, the talking animal thing's way overdone. That doesn't mean it can't still be done well now and again. ****
My little fluke.......2006-04-12
By far one of my favorite movies when I was little, I was delighted to finally perch my DVD copy of "Fluke" in my movie library. Ever since the lines began to echo in my head ("Well, he's MY little fluke"), I've known my purchase of the flick was imminent. It is, truly, a touching, poignant, and haunting film that tells of loss, betrayal, realization, and redemption on one side, and forgiveness, resilience, and pure, simple understanding on the other. It is about learning to live your life, and learning to pick yourself up again. It's told through the eyes of a dog, but it transcends that.
My main complaint is that the movie can't make up its mind whether to be a romping family film (just watch the theatrical trailer; they cut out the whole "reincarnation" bit and sell it as a kiddie flick) or a full-fledged drama. As a result, the integrity of the film suffers, which is a true shame. As a kid, I loved the lighter bits which I, now older, view as the movie's main pratfall. It also tends to fall into a by-the-numbers rut in the first few sequences, (slight spoiler ahead) such as when the pup Fluke ends up in the pound and the horrible, mean people at the HUMANE SOCIETY whine about his constant barking and schedule him for a euthanasia. (As if a puppy would be put down for barking.) Clearly, this scene seeks to scold anyone who doesn't want dogs running free on the streets. An ideal I applauded a few years ago, but now I must view more realistically. If the producers had allowed the film to launch into a truly moving drama, perhaps "Fluke" would have gained a larger audience. Instead, it may leave the kids wandering off after the first half, and the adults fast-forwarding to the later half.
The decision is yours to make, depending on your age, but my guess is most of you will fall in love with this unique story of redemption and understanding.
