This was supposed to be a blockbuster: the 1984 meeting of then-box-office icons Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood. Instead, the result was surprisingly flat, though Reynolds and Eastwood have their moments. The plot is a mishmash about bootleggers, gangsters, and kidnapping in the 1930s, with Reynolds as a free-wheeling private eye and Eastwood as a jaded cop who doesn't like Reynolds's style. The two stars exaggerate their well-established screen personas, which, in Reynolds's case, was already exaggerated enough. Directed by Richard Benjamin, it's weak stuff, despite a cast that includes Rip Torn, Madeline Kahn, Tony Lo Bianco, and Jane Alexander. The big running gag is about the size of Eastwood's gun. --Marshall Fine

It isn't Candid Camera, it isn't Punk'd--it's The Perry Project. "Scary" Perry Caravello, an out-of-shape, fuzzy-haired, gravel-voiced extra thinks he's scored the lead in "sports detective" spoof Windy City Heat. Everywhere he goes, the fanny pack-sporting "Stone Fury" is followed by cameras, presumably for a DVD featurette. In actuality, he's the unsuspecting victim of an elaborate practical joke. Bobcat Goldthwait (Chappelle's Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live) directs both the real movie and the mockumentary, while Dane Cook puts in an appearance as casting agent "Roman Polanski" and Toby Huss as photographer "Ansel Adams" (all the fake names have real-world counterparts). Caravello's buddies, Tony Barbieri ("The Mole") and Don Barris ("Big Lou"), are members of the same cast...or so he thinks. In reality, they're in on the prank. In fact, they co-wrote the screenplay with producer Jimmy Kimmel. Reportedly, Eminem, Johnny Knoxville, and Fall Out Boy are crazy about this cult classic in the making, but the humiliating, off-color humor won't be to all tastes. Recommended more to fans of the cautionary documentary Overnight and Goldthwait's own Shakes the Clown than to Martin Scorsese's more sophisticated, yet strangely simpatico King of Comedy. Along with "The Big Three," Comedy Central's Windy City Heat features Carson Daly, co-producer Adam Carolla (Kimmel's former Man Show co-host), Ernie Banks, and William "The Refrigerator" Perry. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

"Windy City Heat" is a movie-within-a-movie--a real life "Truman Show." Perry's friends/tormentors/co-stars, Don Barris and Tony Barbieri, have been promising Perry a starring vehicle for more than seven years. Cameras record Perry's every move as he wins the lead role of "Stone Fury," a hardboiled "sports private eye" in a movie called "Windy City Heat." What Perry doesn't realize is that there is no movie called "Windy City Heat." Everyone from actor to PA is in cahoots to manipulate our susceptible, fame-hungry star. Adam Carolla and Actors/comedians Don Barris and Tony Barbieri have been laying the groundwork for this mother of all pranks for more than 10 years. "Windy City Heat" also stars Jimmy Kimmel, Carson Daly, Adam Carolla, Tom Kenny, William "The Refrigerator" Perry, Dane Cook and many other actors too obscure to mention. Bobcat Goldwait both stars and directs.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable, Yet I am Certainly Convinced.......2007-05-31

Simply stunning that a film like this could exist. Simply stunning that a character like Perry exists. As mind-boggling as it is hilarious.

The real movie does not exist, yet in his commentary (done two years later), Perry talks about 'getting the role' genuinely as if it was all for real. Though he does also make reference to it being like a reality show, he still thinks most of the situations were for real (BTW, you have to check out Burt Ward's appearance in the commentary).

At least I don't have to feel bad for Perry about what they did to him. Hell, they gave him a wonderful ride. In an extra, we see him watch the film with Mole and Barris (this film, not the 'real' one), and he has a glimmer in his eye every time he his honored (i.e. 'getting the role' and being given an award by the 'President of Show Business'--in fact, he gets choked up seeing the 'President's' award in the commentary).

Knowing him so well for so long, I believe Don and 'Mole' knew what they could get away with without Perry either catching on or being crushed in the end. Which is apparantly ANYTHING.

He does seem to get a few things ('Roman Polanski,' Charlton Heston being fake, some of the pranks they played on him), but his thought to this day is that it was overall mostly genuine.

I am just glad to see that at the end of the commentary he feels his dreams were fulfilled. And Perry, if you are reading this: they were, my friend, they were...

5 out of 5 stars I Can't Stop Watching It!.......2007-04-24

One of the most unique concepts of seen. Like others are saying, whether it's real or not, it's still side-splitting hilarious. Don Barris and Mole do a killer job of playing along.

5 out of 5 stars Such an elaborate hoax.......2007-04-11

This is a great hoax. Don Barris, Jimmy Kimmel, and friends spent years playing pranks on their gullible friend Perry before they finally got the funding to play one of the most epic pranks ever on him. They succeed in making Perry think he is starring in a poorly written action movie. He's such a narcissist, he never suspects it is a prank. Unbelievably, he still seems to have trouble realizing the whole movie is a joke on him...or maybe the joke is on them since Perry actually did get to star in a movie called Windy City Heat! Since then, they've been continuing the prank, telling him Johnny Knoxville is going to play his role in Windy City Heat - Part 2.

For those who think the movie was staged, I have first hand proof of the star's gullibility. I e-mailed him through Myspace and offered him $5000 to host the opening of my new night club (I don't own a night club). He called me about 10 minutes later and left me a lengthy voicemail explaining how happy he would be to do it because he "needs a good gig."

1 out of 5 stars not so much.......2007-04-01

Call me crazy...but I hated it! Even though I REALLY REALLY wanted to like it!! : ( I couldnt even finish watching it. And Im all about being open minded..I mean I REALLY tried. No such luck. I bought it because Im a HUGE Dane Cook fan, and this was not typical for him..at all. Maybe it got better further into it..I dunno. Im sure there are lots of people that really enjoy this type of comedy. However, Im not one of them.

5 out of 5 stars A Singular Work of Genius.......2007-03-09

Frankly, whether or not "Stone Fury" is in on the joke or not is irrelevant -- this is one of the funniest, meta-level documentaries on the film business ever committed to film. If Perry is "acting," this guy is a genius -- and the increasingly ridiculous situations he finds himself in build toward a hilarious, over-the-top conclusion -- with a drunk, lost limo driver and a wild ride through the windy streets of Chicago. Special props to Bobcat, who underplays the director role perfectly, insisting that every communication he makes be done through a bullhorn. A small joke, but reliably, consistently funny.

This is good good stuff.

Hollywood icon Clint Eastwood shows his on-screen versatility in three very different films. The star who grew up during the hard times of the 1930s takes on a Depression Era role as a rambling Honkytonk Man (Disc 1/Side A) and Dust Bowl drifter who hopes to land a Grand Ole Opry gig. The pace is lighter and loopier as Eastwood revs up a Pink Cadillac (Disc 1/Side B) to play a skip-tracer who nabs bail jumpers before the ink on their bogus I.D.s is dry. Bernadette Peters is the woman who slaps cuffs on the lawman's heart. Finally, Eastwood returns to Depression times for City Heat (Disc 2), teaming with Burt Reynolds in a hard-boiled and hilarious tale of jazz, bullets and bootleg gin in 1933 Kansas City. Drink up and duck!

3 out of 5 stars Watch it for the laughs, not the acting.......2007-05-10

For a movie made in the mid 80's, you'd think pairing up 2 superstars like Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds would make for a smash hit but it just wasn't meant to be. The plot isn't terribly exciting and the acting didn't raise any eyebrows but there was just enough humor and a few goofy situations to keep it from total destruction.

It's the 1930's and the time of prohibition, gangland activity, and all the nefarious activity that goes with it. Eastwood plays the seasoned, grizzled lieutenant in the police department trying to keep a hold on his city while Reynolds is his former partner now turned private eye who just can't seem to stay out of trouble. These two trade wisecracks and insults throughout the film and put themselves into some corny predicaments that merit a few laughs here and there. It seems that they're both trying to outdo each other also so that distracts a little but not too much. They finally team up together to save the day and roust the gangsters in a predictable and unexciting ending.

There's not a whole lot of saving graces other that what has already been mentioned but at least you can see some different, although hollow, acting performances by Madeline Kahn, Rip Torn, Richard Roundtree, Jane Alexander, and Irene Cara. It's not enough to rescue the film but if you go into watching this with the idea that it's just a guilty pleasure and nothing more, you probably won't feel so bad about wasting an hour and a half of your time.

3 out of 5 stars [Three out of Five stars] Good Direction by Rich Benjamin but wooden performances by top stars.......2006-07-13

Jane Alexander, with her facial features, is
no 'love interest'! Set in "thoities", Clint
is tough cop. Former partner, Burt is now av
gumshoe (with black partner, played well, thou
briefly by 'Shaft's Richard Roundtree, trying
to put last's years silly 'Q', with David Car-
radine behind him!), who is a smartass and the
false banter between them is somewhat annoying!
Clint's character plays piano (avergely) and
when his eye starts twitching, it time to watch
out! He punched Burt around and they exchange
insults, but there just ins't any chemistry.
They really do try however. Rip Torn, a ganster
who gets offed way too early (after his goons
kill off Roundtree), is the best thing in here!
Burt had his jaw broken during filming of this
lukewarm comedy because he was smashed by real
chair instead of fake one. Both his eardrums
and jaw were broken and it took him three years
to get healthy again. Must be bad for your ca-
reer to star with Clint film Dir. by Richard
Benjamin. Nice try at chemistry though.

    4 out of 5 stars Under-rated.......2006-07-10

I loved this movie and I feel its very under rated. Yes the story was a little on the weak side but there was some fantastic action, good comedy and a wonderful setting. Too bad it didn't do well in the box office because a follow up would have been awesome.

3 out of 5 stars Lightweight Fun With Clint and Burt.......2005-07-03

"City Heat" (1984) is a nostalgic throwback to those Spencer Tracy-Clark Gable vehicles of the late 1930s. It's lightweight stuff, but Clint Eastwood and Burt Reynolds make a good team in this Prohibition-era caper. The star chemistry compensates for a weak script and troubled production history (Clint selected director Richard Benjamin after a falling out with original collaborator Blake Edwards -- alias Sam O. Brown in the final credits). Though a disappointment with critics and audiences, Clint and Burt have done much worse.

3 out of 5 stars Simply Not the Best but Fun.......2005-05-28

In a time of Prohibition, rival gangsters and speakeasies, Clint Eastwood stars as police Lieutenant Speer who gets tangled up with former partner Mike Murphy (Burt Reynolds) who quit the force to begin his own private detective agency together with his partner Dehl Swift (Richard Roundtree). A lot of humor is well represented in this film as well as some good action as Speer and Murphy reluctantly work together to solve the case involving two rival gangsters Primo Pitt (Rip Torn) and Leon Coll (Tony Lo Bianco) and their accomplices.

Some of the songs contained in the movie were co-written by Irene Cara who stars as Swift's girlfriend and entertainer Ginny Lee who also sings a George and Ira Gershwin melody. Though not quite her best role, the late Madeline Kahn played the daughter of a wealthy businessman and girlfriend of Murphy who was Pitt's kidnap victim, holding her until he got the goods. Probably the best parts of the film were the gunfight scenes where Murphy gets tangled up between two of Pitt's soldiers and two of Coll's soldiers spraying bullets everywhere under the watchful eye of Speer as Murphy takes cover, and in Pitt's hideout inside a garage shows Murphy pulling out a long gun when Speer gets the better end by drawing out an even longer gun as they exchange gunfire with Pitt and his soldiers with a little mechanic running back and forth in panic seeking cover and dodging bullets.

Not really the best movie, but it's worth a look.

            Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Hard to watch, as you might expect..........2005-09-06

Well, I do have to give credit to the actor portraying Gein, as it did take some courage to take on this role. As far as the movie goes, you definately will not come away with anything approaching a smile on your face. This is one of those movies that will probably bother you the rest of the day after viewing it. Now, of course this was a horror movie, but there really wasn't anything in this film that made it interesting enough to watch twice. I'd pass on this one.

Just by way of background, and while other reviewers seems to prefer to reveal much of the story and plot, I think that sort of ruins the film in many cases. So, you'll want to look for other reviews and reviewers if that is what you are looking for...
