Loren Dean, a pleasant, attractive actor who seems to fall seamlessly into the background of every film he's in (Gattaca, Enemy of the State, Apollo 13), is perfectly cast in Mumford as a psychologist (named Mumford) who wanders into a small town (named Mumford) and suddenly fits seamlessly into everybody's rhythms and routines. Balancing a no-nonsense approach with a keen ability to listen sincerely to everyone's problems (with the exception of a snotty lawyer, played by Martin Short), he's a friendly, approachable blank slate for all those who come to visit him. And while he's tending to the shopaholic housewife (Mary McDonnell), the pulp-fantasizing pharmacist (Pruitt Taylor Vince), and the anorexic teenager (Zooey Deschanel), no one seems to give a second thought to who the man is behind the therapeutic face, not even his slightly sardonic neighbor (Alfre Woodard). It's not until he befriends a sweetly daft computer billionaire (Jason Lee) and starts treating a chronically fatigued young woman (Hope Davis) that his past--or rather, lack of one--starts coming into play, for it turns out that Mumford is not exactly who he says he is.

Less a mystery than an affectionate, perfectly modulated character study, Mumford easily represents writer-director Lawrence Kasdan's best work in a decade. While the plot seems whimsically Capra-esque and the dialogue sometimes stilted, it's so carefully and quietly directed that its good will and gentle spirit seem to float lightly off the screen. Kasdan hasn't created such engaging characters since The Big Chill, and all are winning without seeming artificial. Most amazing is Davis, who manages to invest a woman suffering from chronic fatigue syndrome with an inner glow that slowly becomes brighter as the film progresses. And Dean, as the enigmatic Mumford, may have finally found his breakthrough role; after years as an also-ran, he finally emerges as a solid, charming leading man. After Mumford, you won't forget his name, or face. --Mark Englehart

Description

From Academy Award(R)-nominated writer/director Lawrence Kasdan (BODY HEAT, THE BIG CHILL) comes this endearing romantic comedy. Starring a first-rate ensemble cast -- including Ted Danson (SAVING PRIVATE RYAN), Martin Short (FATHER OF THE BRIDE), Mary McDonnell (INDEPENDENCE DAY), Jason Lee (DOGMA), and Alfre Woodard (DOWN IN THE DELTA) -- MUMFORD is sure to win your heart with its charm and wit. When a would-be psychologist, curiously named Dr. Mumford (Loren Dean, ENEMY OF THE STATE), comes to the idyllic town of the same name and offers his talent for listening and a disarming frankness, the town's quirkiest citizens scramble for a seat on his couch. As he lightens hearts darkened by old secrets -- including those of the beautiful and troubled Sofie Crisp (Hope Davis, ARLINGTON ROAD) -- no one realizes he's hiding a whopper of his own, or that he's fallen head over heels for one of his patients! Filled with personality disorders, surprises, offbeat alliances, and some hilarious fantasies, MUMFORD is just what the laugh doctor ordered.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Romantic Comedy... Ever.......2007-05-26

Mumford is one of those movies that no one really knows about, but everyone who's seen it loves it. It's a great romantic comedy full of bright, colorful- and very eccentric- characters. And it has one of the best twists in any movie I've seen in years.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie, easy purchase.......2006-11-04

I was trying to introduce my boyfriend to this movie, but Netflix sent a broken copy with a horrible skip right near the denouement - that horrible dvd kind of skip where it just jumps back to the beginning of the disk... Anyway, I got on Amazon and ordered the movie right then, and in a few days, it was ours. This is a great movie, and it is wonderful having Amazon there to save the day!

4 out of 5 stars What Exactly Constitutes Being A Psychologist?.......2006-10-15

MUMFORD is a delicious little film from 1999 written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan (The Big Chill, Grand Canyon, The Accidental Tourist, Silverado, etc) who as usual poses some interesting questions as to our contemporary take on concepts. It is a quiet, beautifully acted ensemble film that wears well indeed.

Mumford (the underused Loren Dean) is a man with a variegated past who settles into a little town by the name of Mumford, decides he will listen to people talk, be a sounding board for folks who are in need of communication in this basically non-communicative world, and becomes a 'Psychologist' in every sense of the word - the good sense. The manner in which he listens to the many people within the little town is mesmerizing and insightful and the citizens he encounters and assists are varied and beautifully sculpted vulnerable human beings. The fine cast includes Hope Davis, Jason Lee (in one his finest roles), Mary McDonnell, Alfre Woodard, Zooey Deschanel, Martin Short, David Paymer, Kevin Tighe, Ted Danson, Jason Ritter and even more.

The dialogue is introspective, healing, edgy, and entertaining and the overall feeling left with the viewer at the end of the piece is one of wishing more 'Mumfords' would be around our neighborhoods - or rather that we all could become 'Mumfords' with a little conviction and concern for our fellow beings. This is a Kasdan concept movie that touches our hearts while it stimulates our brains. Grady Harp, October 06

5 out of 5 stars One of the Most Underappreciated Movies of the '90s.......2006-05-23

One of the most underappreciated movies of the '90s, "Mumford" is written & directed by Lawrence Kasdan and is both really entertaining and funny. Loren Dean plays a psychologist named Mumford who lives in a small town called Mumford. Mumford is the most popular psychologist in town, although his methods are a bit strange. He tells other people what his clients have told him, he kicks people out of his office and still maintains a level of popularity. Among his patients are Pruitt Taylor Vince (Trapped, Monster) as a man who has film-noirish fantasies in which he sees himself as a large muscular man. Jason Lee (Mallrats, My Name is Earl) as a young billionaire who can't find happiness. Zooey Deschanel (Winter Passing, Elf) as a young girl who's addicted to...magazines. Mary McDonnel as Althea, a woman obsessed with buying things. And finally, Hope Davis (About Schmidt, The Weather Man) as Sofie, a woman suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
While some of these characters are just there, Mumford befriends Jason Lee's character Skip and falls in love with Sofie. Martin Short is also in the film, an extended cameo basically, as a criminal lawyer who was kicked out of Mumford's office and seeks revenge. All the actors are great in their performances; Dean is perfect as Mumford, Lee is hilarious, Davis looks hot which I've never percieved in any of her other movies, and Deschanel is great, but almost unrecognizable. This is truly a delightful movie and I hope that this will inspire someone to see it. It's well made and very funny.

1 out of 5 stars dull and insulting.......2004-01-20

Mumford is a film about a "psychologist" who lives in a small idyllic town, and deals with his patients in a way that seems to annoy them but keeps them coming back. Could it be that Loren Dean happens to look like a model? He also has the charm and acting abilities of a model, which is to say none.

Hope Davis steals the show here, although what she was doing in this film is beyond explanation.

The film does not let the viewer get deep inside any of the characters, certainly what should be paramount in a film that deals with human nature, love, and anxiety. Instead we are offered a script that is so obvious I imagined a five year old with a crayon scribbling it down during recess before submitting it to the studio.

Before you settle down with this film expecting a cozy little vignette about relationships be warned, it is chock full of unnecessary swearing and breast flashing. The review I read likened it to a Frank Capra film; well, you're much better off with the real thing.

Swan Lake became an unexpected popular hit when radical choreographer Matthew Bourne took Tchaikovsky's traditional ballet by the scruff of the neck and reworked it with a myriad of modern influences and themes to astonishing effect. Seldom have the dark psychological riptides at the heart of so many classical ballets been so brilliantly exposed. The Prince (Scott Ambler) is a wretched and dissolute young man dominated by his mother, the Joan Collins-like Queen (Fiona Ambler). Shades of Tennessee Williams, indeed. Von Rothbart becomes a press secretary, more sinister eminence grise than hissable villain. Most startling of all, the Swan (Adam Cooper) is a muscular, emphatically masculine male.

Bourne has stressed the universality of his interpretation, which proved such a success for his Adventures in Motion Pictures dance company. And indeed this is never an overtly "gay" Swan Lake, although the electricity of the pas de deux at the height of Act 2 delivers a palpably homoerotic charge. Its universal threads--as Bourne suggests, the need to be held and understood is common to us all--are synthesized in the utterly moving conclusion as the Swan cradles the lifeless Prince and raises him to a better place. Swan Lake becomes a human, rather than simply romantic, tragedy. --Piers Ford

Description

Matthew Bourne, director and choreographer of Adventures in Motion Pictures--a maverick new modern dance company based in London--brings a new twist to an old classic with this production of "Swan Lake." Taking advantage of the public's preoccupation with the ups and downs of the royal family, Bourne has set his story in the modern era and has cast all the swans--including the Odette/Odile role--as males. Boutne's creation brings great ballet to an audience it has never before reached, and for cognoscenti offers a new view of the breadth of possibilty in Tchaikovsky's well-loved score. "Swan Lake" enjoyed a sold-out run in London and a subsequent critically acclaimed and public-adored Broadway stint.

I found the DVD of Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake excellent material and I have some friends queuing up to borrow the DVD. It arrived on time as promised by Amazon and the DVD was well worth the cost and the wait.

4 out of 5 stars Not a fan of the choroegraphy, but can't knock the idea.......2007-05-18

Bourne's swan lake is an interesting twist on the traditional version. The choreography (especially for the swans) is very modern. Theatrical choreography is used throughout the show, which does have many good moments...but I can't say that I'm an overall fan of Bourne's choreography in this show. His Nuctracker is simply amazing though! When I saw Swan Lake live, I had the same feelings about it as I do about the video, but the "live" aspect at least allowed me to watch what ever I wanted to watch in the seen, and just made things more exciting all the way around.

5 out of 5 stars Swan Lake Experience.......2007-05-14

I saw the live version of this production in Brisbane (April 2007) and it was truly magical and amazing. I did notice a couple of changes since the filming of the DVD. I love that Matthew Bourne's male swans portray the strength and well-known aggression of real life swans (not always easy to watch) and thoroughly enjoyed the DVD performances. It is good to have the traditional version of Swan Lake to turn to as well though, as I believe that it is important to preserve the original classical masterpieces that have inspired generations of lovers of dance.

5 out of 5 stars And You Think Ballet is Not For YOU - Think Again!.......2007-05-13

If you remember the movie "Billy Elliot", Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake will be a great follow up. The last scene in Billy Elliot is of the Swan in this performance.

What Gilbert and Sullivan set out to do a century ago was to make opera popular with people who thought opera was above them. Bourne's work will have same effect on Ballet. It is truly wonderful and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Theatre.......2007-03-14

Having seen this production both live and on TV it was a must to purchase the DVD. There are some critical points but, in the main, the dramatic power of Matthew Bourne's chorography coupled with the performance of Adam Cooper and his corp of male swans it is a frightening depiction of what could have been if Pepita had dispensed with his tutu's and shocked the world with a production which would,I am sure, have met with Tchaikovsky's approval. I found some of the movement a little ghose particularly the assemble work in the early scenes but the par de dur between Cooper and Scott Ambler must be seen to be believed.

2 out of 5 stars Better Heard than Seen.......2007-06-28

This is a wonderfully sung and performed COSI FAN TUTTE. The problem is the video quality it terrible. On your HDTV it is like watching the opera from behind an annoying screen. The picture is blurry and anything but crisp. Details are lost, and the better your TV, the more annoying this is. My recommendation is to skip the dvd and get the cd of this performance.

5 out of 5 stars An inspired Cosi.......2006-06-07

There are several excellent productions of Cosi available on DVD. Because the opera can be interpreted in different ways (that's one of its joys), I don't think there's a "best production" out there. This one, though, is my personal favorite. It's conducted by John Eliot Gardiner who says of Cosi that no other Mozart opera has such an unmistakable sound, one he can only describe as "feminine." It's the opera I put on when I need to nourish the soul. The "Addio" quintet, followed by the "Soave sia il vento" trio is almost too much beauty to bear in so short a time. Heavenly Amadeus music, always with that tinge of indefinable sadness, just like life.

This production has lush sets and costumes, sparkling conducting (on period instruments) and first-rate performances by the six ensemble players. I love how it shifts gears in Act II. Up until then it's all hilarity and fun. Then it stops you in your tracks as you realize Fiordiligi is truly in crisis. Amanda Roocroft communicates this both in her singing and her acting. You feel deeply for her.

As the sisters, Fiordiligi and Dorabella, Roocroft and Rosa Mannion's voices blend perfectly; this is essential because they sing together throughout the opera. Rainer Trost is a perfect Mozart tenor - sweet-voiced and expressive. His moving interpretation of Ferrando's two arias "Un' aura amorosa" and "Tradito, schernito" goes straight to your heart. Rodney Gilfry is wonderfully arrogant as Guglielmo and his rich baritone voice is a treat for the ear.

Finally, there are some great directorial choices - from the sisters fending off the "foreigners" with upended tables in the hilariously-staged "Alla bella Despinetta," to the ensemble dropping out of character as they begin the final chorus (an inspired choice since the audience knows it's false cheerfulness at that point anyway).

5 out of 5 stars The rare thing - a PERFECT video.......2006-05-08

Mozart's "Cosi fan tutte" has never been as ubiquitous in the operatic repertoire as Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, or Magic Flute, despite having perhaps the most beautiful score and the best libretto (by da Ponte). Ostensibly, the story is simple: two sisters (Fiordiligi and Dorabella) are engaged to two young men (Ferrando and Guglielmo). The men, egged on by a sinister Don Alfonso, decide to "test" their sweethearts' love by disguising themselves as soldiers and switching partners. The women do not pass this love-test, and thus the title of the opera: Cosi fan tutte (all women are like that). But this summary of the plot only scratches the tip of the iceburg that is Cosi fan tutte.

In the 19th century the opera was decried as wicked, because it dared put forth the idea of "free love" way before the 1960s. It stubbornly refused to be traditionally romantic. It's a comedy that becomes profoundly uncomfortable to watch, as the sunny frivolous, fake "romances" between the main characters turns into something entirely ambiguous and mysterious, something no one can explain, not even da Ponte or Mozart. The ending has no real sense of resolution, and thus is been the bane of stage directors. How does one end an opera that has no real ending? The moral and emotional ambiguity of Cosi fan tutte, however, makes it perhaps Mozart's richest and deepest work. I think the score is his most beautiful. The da Ponte libretto is by turns biting, funny, romantic, cynical, cruel, and humane. A performance that can express all the complexity of this work is rare, so that's why it's so special when it does happen, as it does here in this wonderful video.

John Eliot Gardiner is a conductor of the HIP movement, meaning he believes in using period-style instruments, tuning, and singing practices. The appogiaturas that mid-20th century German conductors so insistently stamped out are restored, as is vocal embellishments of the arias. The HIP movement was controversial when it first started; now most "unHIP" performances have incorporated some HIP practices, such as a the proper restoration of appogiaturas. (Although if one listens to the 1930s broadcasts and early recordings of Mozart one can hear the appogiaturas -- why they were so ruthlessly erased by mid-20th century conductors has always been a minor mystery to me. It mostly hinged on a few ambiguous letters Mozart wrote, that suggested he wanted his arias sung come scritto. Nowadays people acknowledge that those one or two letters were probably not meant to be taken literally.)

The production of Cosi fan tutte is proof that "traditional" does not equal stodgy. The cute (perhaps too cute) beginning has Don Alfonso (Claudio Nicolai), Guglielmo (Rodney Gilfry), and Ferrando (Rainer Trost) walking down the aisles of the Theatre du Chatalet and onstage. The men are in period-style costumes, and the stage is filled with white curtains. As the men end their discussion about the constancy of women, the curtains part and we are in a sunny, pretty Meditteranean garden, with a terra-cotta floor. Fiordiligi is playing with her clothes, suggesting her youth. The sets remain simple throughout the opera, but they always suggest a happy, sunny place, that contrasts more and more with the emotional complexity of the story as the opera progresses.

The main idea of Act 1 is to emphasize the immaturity of the lovers. The sisters are barely distinguishable from each other, both in costumes, voice, and personality. Gardiner explains in his notes that although it's been traditional to cast Fiordiligi as a soprano and Dorabella as a mezzo to contrast and differentiate the sisters, the original Fiordiligi and Dorabella were singers very similar in range and type. Besides, the main concept in this production is that Fiordiligi, Dorabella, Guglielmo, and Ferrando are all very immature and juvenile, with very little sense of self. (Reminiscent of the lovers in Midsummer's Night Dream.) They rhapsodize about love without any idea of what love actually is. Throughout the performance, things seem light and happy and giggly, and it only gradually creeps up on you that this is no longer funny, that the emotions are real, and that the silly, indistinguishable foursome have become complex individuals, with emotions that can't be erased by Don Alfonso and Despina's almost cruel prattle at the opera's conclusion.

Gardiner assembled a young, good-looking cast, that fit into the concept of the immaturity and inexperience of the lovers. Don Alfonso is an elderly gentleman, and the fact that he's cruelly meddling in the emotional and sexual lives of these young people suggests his need to compensate for his own lack of emotional depth. Amanda Roocroft and Rosa Mannion have voices that are lighter than usual for this opera. Roocroft can't quite negotiate the fiendishly difficult "Come scoglio" and "Per pieta" as well as some Fiordiligis I've heard (most recently Dorothea Roschmann in the excellent, if very different video from Berlin), but I love her light, bright, youthful sounding voice, as well as Rosa Mannion's. If you have an allergy to fast vibratos than you might take issue with Roocroft and Mannion, but I don't. The men (Rodney Gilfry and Rainer Trost) are more well-known than the women, and they sing marvellously. "Il core vi dono" and "Fra gli amplessi" (the two sublime duets between the "switched" lovers in the second act) have the requisite beauty and poignancy. The many ensemble pieces demonstrate how well all the performers are able to blend their voices into a harmonious, beautiful whole. Despina (Eirian James) is an energetic and spunky Despina, and she suggests that her cruel shenanigans are borne out of a servant's resentment. Like Don Alfonso, she always remains slightly detatched from the lovers, as if she's watching a baseball game.

At the end of the opera, Mozart's happy C-major chord plays, and the characters are all smiling, except Fiordiligi is still holding onto Ferrando's hand, and Dorabella and Guglielmo are holding hands as well. Finally Fiordiligi holds hands with Guglielmo, and the lovers are all lined up, holding hands. They're supposed to go back to their original lovers, but they can't break the bonds that they formed with their "fake" lovers either. All of them are smiling. What are they smiling about? Their newfound love? Or relief that the game is over? A perfectly ambiguous ending to this opera.

Loved every minute of this performance! I will only add that the voices were all stellar - incredible range required for Mozart - and the blending of Manion's (Dorabella) and Roocroft's (Fiordiligi) sopranos skilled and delightful. I was fascinated with Dorabella and Fiordiligi: difficult to distinguish in the beginning and gradually allowing their different natures to emerge along with differences in costuming. This production, like all of Gardiner's, is excellent; anyone wanting scan and pan with lots of closeups is missing a genuine treat!

5 out of 5 stars Nitpicking doesnt change the fact..........2005-08-17

that this is the best overall COSI on the market. Cosi is very much ensemble and this dvd is filmed that way. Those who want alot of closeups and editing may find this disappointing. I liked the filming scheme of this dvd because it was written and composed specifically as an opera of relationships, and viewing the reactions of those characters not necessarily singing at the moment is important. The denouement of this version of the opera is peerless in dvd format. The quality and matching of voices is also unmatched on any other current dvds of this opera. Trost & Roocroft are consistently excellent and the orchestra is dead on. I have viewed every COSI dvd offered online, and it is my sincere opinion that this version is the best overall. Try it!

Mafia! - DVD- Taking aim at Hollywood's greatest gangster films, MAFIA! is the hilarious comedy spoof that packs all the laughs you'd expect from the hit-making director of AIRPLANE! and HOT SHOTS! In this sidesplitting saga of disorganized crime's most dysfunctional family, legendary star Lloyd Bridges rules the underworld as the ruthless, powerful ... and ceaselessly clumsy ... Godfather Vincenzo Cortino. When the time comes to choose the next Don Cortino, however, a riotous rivalry breaks out between his two sons: one a war hero (handsome Jay Mohr -- JERRY MAGUIRE) and the other a raving psychotic! Also starring sexy Christina Applegate (JUST VISITING) in an outrageously funny cast -- you'll happily die laughing with this dead-on mobster movie parody that offers entertainment you can't refuse! Mumford - DVD- From Academy Award(R)-nominated writer/director Lawrence Kasdan (BODY HEAT, THE BIG CHILL) comes this endearing romantic comedy.

      GRADE: A
