I didn't want this movie to end. Lovely & Amazing centers around two sisters--Michelle (Catherine Keener), a would-be artist, and Elizabeth (Emily Mortimer), a fledgling actress. Both are grappling with their mother's (Brenda Blethyn) going in for liposuction, the erratic behavior of their adopted sister (Raven Goodwin), and the flounderings of their love lives. Because her husband is having an affair, Michelle has a fling with a 17-year-old (Jake Gyllenhaal); meanwhile, Elizabeth breaks up with her sincere boyfriend (James LeGros) and falls into bed with a glib movie star (Dermot Mulroney). But no plot description will capture the exquisite pleasures of this movie; Lovely and Amazing is a superb kaleidoscope of moments, each new fragment shifting the whole into a new delightful pattern. The entire cast is outstanding; the script and direction of Nicole Holofcener (Walking and Talking) are subtle, funny, and sharply observed. --Bret Fetzer

It's astonishing that one man could have written so many memorable songs, but musical gems keep popping up in De-Lovely, about the life and loves of Cole Porter. Played by Kevin Kline (In & Out, A Fish Called Wanda), an elderly Porter is summoned by a mysterious director (Jonathan Pryce, Brazil) to view his own story, which unfolds as a series of theatrical tableaux. The movie is open (if a bit chaste) about Porter's homosexuality, but argues that the love of his life was still his devoted platonic relationship with Linda Lee (Ashley Judd, Ruby in Paradise, Kiss the Girls). Unfortunately, the narrative suffers from the fate of many biographies; by trying to cram in a person's entire life, it ends up a collection of snapshots without depth or context. The parade of celebrity singers (Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow) were apparently chosen for their jarringly modern vocal mannerisms. --Bret Fetzer

Description

"The most unusual and enchanting musical in years" (Roger Ebert), this cinematic ode to legendary composer Cole Porter is at once buoyantly fun and "heartbreakingly beautiful" (Liz Smith). OscarÂ(r) winner* Kevin Kline (The Ice Storm) is "perfection" (Rolling Stone) as the elegant and deeply complex Porter in a film that offers "knockout performances" (Gene Shalit) from Natalie Cole, Elvis Costello, Sheryl Crow, Diana Krall, Alanis Morissette and Robbie Williams, and "melancholy, wit and style to burn" (The Philadelphia Inquirer)! From Paris to Venice to Broadway to Hollywood, the lives of Cole (Kline) and Linda (Ashley Judd) Porter were never less thanglamorous and wildly unconventional. Though Cole's thirst for life strained their marriage, Linda never stopped being his muse, inspiring some of the greatest songs of the twentieth century.*1988: Supporting Actor, A Fish Called Wanda

This was surprisingly good. I sat there mesmerized by the qualities of the music, the video, the acting, and the storyline. On a par with "Chicago."

5 out of 5 stars Over and Over.......2007-05-27

Not only did this give wonderful insight to the famed composer Cole Porter, Kevin Kline (one of the most underated actors around) was mesmerizing. I play it over and over also to hear the great soundtrack!

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Musical Bio.......2007-05-15

Great movie. Fabulous scoring to the theme. A great way to present Cole Porter's life and music.

5 out of 5 stars one of my favorite movies of all time!.......2007-05-11

The story of Cole Porter's life, and his wife Linda Porter. I love this movie. After viewing, I found myself humming the songs of the famous Cole Porter, of which many I did not even realize he wrote.

The acting in this movie is exquisite. Both Kevin Klein and Ashley Judd are perfect in their parts as the married couple. She is beautiful and elegant, and clearly you see how he could be inspired to write songs for her/about her/because of her. How lovely it is that such a powerful woman inspired songs that are enjoyed by millions of people.

Another greatness of the movie is the Cole Porter songs that play throughout. His music as sung by modern artists is penetrating, and tells their own part of the story.

5 out of 5 stars American Aristocracy.. wher are they now?.......2007-05-08

Style is timeless and Porter: the man and the music, was the definition of style.

True Im from a future generation than his, but whats is it that makes me relate to his music in such a way? It tranecends time, language, space... the movie takes us through the life and love of maestro porter.. and BTW enjoy the gifted singers who appear throught all the movie..yet what Im always intriguied is by the way this american aristocrat always seemed to be soaring above vulgarity and popularistic masses.. a true gentleman

Yes the movie takes us through his "closet issues" .. yet in a way that humanizes him and reveals the larger-than-life spirit of his wife.

If you are like me, transported to the days of black-tie and elegant taste by the music of Cole Porter, you can never be tired of seeing this movie..

go on., start to sing .. bees do it..

Again, this is the ultimate visual/audio album for any long-term MB's fan. Do you need a "reference library" of Moodies songs? If so, run don't walk to buy this DVD. Justin playing his Gibson ES-335 along with John Lodge and the rest of the band rocking out on stage prove they are the best rock group over the past 25 years to remain "mates" and keep on making sound waves. It's not a "Question of Balance" when new member Norda Mullen is on stage!

Wonderful. It was lovely to see them too. Great sound and visuals. They've aged quite well, still sexy. And after watching the interview, they seem like really nice people.

5 out of 5 stars Charlie from Mpls.......2007-01-09

This is their best one yet, with their selection of songs and sound. The girls are a great substitute for Thomas.

4 out of 5 stars Still Going Strong.......2007-01-08

I've been a Moody Blues fan since the late '60s and have seen them in person three times. This is the first video I've seen without Ray Thomas and I was all set to be disappointed, but the woman flutist is outstanding.

This DVD hasn't got the symphonic sounds of the "Red Rocks" DVD, but there are many more of their newer songs featured. In addition, this is the first DVD of a concert where I've actually watched the "Interview with the band" segment and it is great. These are genuine people who love making great music and who, I believe, truly appreciate their fans. You do get some insight into their personal lives and it's nice to see how "well-grounded" they are, unlike some of today's "talent pool", most of whom will never last 40 years.

4 out of 5 stars Still kickin' it .......2007-01-03

Another very good performance from a legendary group. Even without one of the original members this dvd is definitly worth the money. Crisp, clean, and clear like always the band just keeps on kickin' it.

Product Description

She's 29 years old, single, and overweight. She doesn't have a college degree, a boyfriend, or a job. She's outspoken, obstinate, and fed up with society's expectations of her. Her name is Kim Sam-Soon, and she's Korea's unlikely sweetheart! Thanks to its everywoman protagonist, My Lovely Sam-Soon has been billed as Korea's answer to Bridget Jones. Kim Sam-Soon (Kim Seon-Ah, who gained 15 pounds for the role) is a Cordon Bleu-trained pastry chef who doesn't conform to the stereotype of the typical K-Drama Cinderella. Sam-Soon won't let men push her around, will eat and sleep her way out of a depression, and could care less how other people see her. But the unthinkable occurs: Kim Sam-Soon meets a Prince Charming named Hyeon Jin-Heon (Hyeon Bin). He's a rich restaurant owner who hires Sam-Soon, not only to be a chef, but also to be his pretend girlfriend! So begins a series of surprising and touching events that would try the emotions of any normal woman. But this is no normal woman - this is Kim Sam-Soon! When My Lovely Sam-Soon first aired, audiences immediately identified with Kim Sam-Soon's stereotype-breaking character. With her "unladylike" behavior, Sam-Soon challenges traditional ideas of what Korean women are like by providing a glimpse of what a Korean woman is really like! Audiences responded by making My Lovely Sam-Soon the most watched K-Drama of the year, with a viewership rate of over 40 percent. Alternately hilarious, heartwarming, and heartbreaking, My Lovely Sam-Soon - and Kim Sam-Soon herself - will win you over!

This series is so funny! It's nice to see a departure from the formulaic K-drama story lines. Kim Sun Ah is a great actress who makes us root for her despite her flaws. She is also a funny comedian who made me laugh countless times during this series.

Buy this DVD, you won't regret it.

A wonderful drama for those who are looking for some cute, funny and romantic. Great actors, and the soundtrack is amazing too! Highly recommend for those looking for something to watch.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-04-12

I was immediately hooked and didn't want the series to stop. I would laugh uncontrollably one second, and would wipe tears from my eyes the next.

The karaoki scene is my favorite - so funny. I had to watch it over and over.

You'll be hooked too, enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars omg painful.......2007-01-06

I notice that despite Sam Soon's avoirdupois, other characters' dress sense is really more ridiculous e.g. her paramour's shirt in Episode 2. What is with the widehipped accentuating outfits on the returnee and does Daniel Henney really "stir" anything in the audience? I don't get it. I have to believe that the impression created contrary to the hype is as intentional as is the inexplicably bad hair on the clever girl character. Side-by-side, Korean American boy is not the heartthrob of the series nor is he the breakout. Kim Suna does an excellent job as Sam Soon and her weight increase highlights her pretty nose and sweet mouth. Sam Soon suffers so much in the story that I really can't understand the other reviews about her inner strength. She gets pushed around for the whole show, she just complains about it. There were at least two good coffee tables in this series. For a Korean drama, there was an absence of noticeably crazy furniture. I liked the Irish Spring bathtub and toilet. I want to know what Sam Soon wrote on the restaurant cake after crossing paths with Chae Ree with her fiance for the first time. The best thing about the show that everyone else finds SUPER hilarious is the scene when Sam Soon's paramour tells Daniel Henney (according to the subtitles), "I don't like you. You're stupid." That scene literally warms my heart.

This series contains many feints. It's sneaky.

Also, it is not realistic which makes a riposte to the demand for Cinderella endings in standard Korean romance dramas. SNEAKY.

It's a product of its Vietnam era just as surely as Robert Altman's M*A*S*H, and like that film Oh! What a Lovely War is ostensibly about a different war. Based on a celebrated anti-war stage piece produced by Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop, the film chronicles the various madnesses of the First World War. Along with vignettes involving the members of the fictional Smith family, the movie lands its punches with a two-pronged attack: by using the songs of the war, mostly patriotic; and by using the real-life words of various figures from WWI. You can see how this would have fit a stylized stage show; in the more literal, realistic realm of film, it mostly comes across as heavy-handed pretentiousness. Richard Attenborough, who would later explore the lives of Gandhi and Chaplin, first made his way to the director's chair here, and he enlisted a staggering who's who of his fellow British actors for roles in the large ensemble: Olivier, Gielgud, and Richardson among them. John Mills plays the most bull-headed of the generals, blithely measuring out yards of territory gained by the thousands of casualties involved. The songs are a historically fascinating lot, mostly given an ironic or sinister treatment in this incarnation, as jolly patriotic tunes that mask the utter carnage at the front. Among the high points is Maggie Smith singing (well, declaiming) an ode to recruitment, promising war as a grand adventure. The blending of arch content with Attenborough's realistic staging of trench warfare just doesn't take, but what does hit home are the actual quotes and the statistics of killing; World War I set a bloody standard for sheer, blind slaughter. --Robert Horton

Description

It was the War to end all wars - well not quite. For with the ricochet of one bullet, the entire course of human history was changed forever...Now, for the first time, Academy Award®-winner Richard Attenborough's* directorial debut is available on DVD. Based on the stage musical by the same name, Oh! What a Lovely War features a stellar cast that includes Laurence Olivier, Ralph Richardson, John Mills, John Gielgud, Maggie Smith, Vanessa Redgrave, Ian Holm, Dirk Bogarde and Susannah York. By fusing the surreal with the factual and juxtaposing savagely funny satire with quiet sorrow, Attenborough has created the oddest and most outstanding film ever made about the "game" that became World War One.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ageless.......2007-06-27

Still the best anti war film ever made. Still as fresh as when it was first made.

3 out of 5 stars Not Even A Lovely Film!.......2007-05-25

I remember seeing this film when it first came out. Much of the memory is a blur (and, after seeing the film again, I prefer it that way). Only two things about it do I remember vividly - the very clever way Maggie Smith was presented first at a distance and then in grisly closeup, and how many times I kept checking my watch to see how much longer the bloody thing would last.

The film, of course, is an anti-war piece made at a time when anti-war films were terribly fashionable. This and Richard Lester's How I Won The War are examples of the nonsensical and nearly unwatchable variety. Oh What A Lovely War was Richard Attenborough's first stab at directing and the kid-with-a-new-toy aspect is really apparent. The film is based on a trendy stage play and proves once again that what works sublimely well in a theatre does not necessarily translate well to the screen. While the play could engage its audience, the action on a movie screen remains detached. The mixture of music hall songs and trench warfare both seemed surreal on stage. But the extreme differences in style in Attenborough's vision are uneasy, abrupt, and at times seemingly arbitrary.

One of the big selling points of the film was its all-star cast which seemed to include just about all the big British names of the time as well as a few promising newcomers. All doing their bit to get The Message across. Although it is interesting to note how many of these stars were, at roughly the same time, also appearing in The Battle Of Britain, a war film with quite a different take on the theme.

Oh What A Lovely War makes its anti-war point. Then makes it again. And again. And again. I doubt if any warmongers ever changed their opinions because of a film, or if anyone who did not already have anti-war beliefs went to see the film anyway. In the end, we're left with a bunch of luvvies preaching to the converted in a rather heavy-handed and overly stylised "entertainment". Forty years on, this film is now as much a relic as The Great War itself. Sorry, Dickie, but there is no way I could ever be persuaded to sit through Oh What A Lovely War again!

2 out of 5 stars 60's avant-garde musical review mangling the Great War.......2007-02-19

This film (that started as a radio play) takes a bought as long ad the war and mangles the history and substitutes words (one respirator for the four of us) for standard songs. For a little while one can put up with metaphors and Monty Python skits. However after a while it gets quite boring. You have to know history to keep up with the skits; if you know history then this is a waist of time emulating it.

Very ingenious settings in a pavilion (Brighton) by the sea set up the prolog to describe the positions before the war. The scattered reference to red poppies are quite fascination but not worth plugging through the film. There is a brief but good emulation of the Christmas meeting in no-man's land.

In the tradition of "The Longest Day" we get to see cameos of many famous actors of the day. It is quite fun to guess where we saw them before. Some of the song and dance is reminiscent of the quality that went into "Springtime for Hitler."

Bottom line is if you missed this film you haven't missed much.

The DVD version includes Richard Attenborough's excuse for the way this was displayed.

4 out of 5 stars Oh what a lovely mess!.......2007-02-18

This well-budgeted film started as a stage musical, and the ultimate result is a mish-mash of artifice and naturalisim. We jump from theatrical sets to naturalistic locations, often with clever transitions or editing. Each individual scene is wonderfully mounted. Highlights include the highly stylized opening sequence depicting the origins of WW1, and the beautifully subtle Christmas Truce scene. The key dialoge is taken from historical accounts, and all the musical numbers are actual WW1 songs ("Belgium Put the Kybosh on the Kaiser", and "Goodbye, Goodbye" being standouts). However beautifull this patchwork quilt of a piece may be, it doesn't hang together well. Pacing is sometimes a problem (minutes devoted to buying cotton candy on a boardwalk adds nothing to it's scene). I'd reccomend this anti-war film only to history fans (you'll nedd a cursory understanding of the people and events from this period), and buffs of musicals and World War One. Those folks will love it, everyone else wil scratch ther heads.

5 out of 5 stars i waited years for this to come to dvd.......2007-02-09

This great anti-war movie, produced from the play, has such excellent lines that are direct quotes from the fools who gave us WWI. You can't help but compare our current administration's foolhardy rush to war with the braggarts of 1914. The cast is like the list of all great British actors of 1969. But the movie is probably best loved for the music, all vintage WWI songs, in the original mono. I was pleased that the quality of the DVD is better than i remember from the older VHS version. You might also be interested in the London cast CD recording of the musical.

3 out of 5 stars Life in La La Land.......2007-05-16

There are some good things in this film. No 1 is the performance of Catherine Keener, who has the ability to make even the most odious of characters likable. ('loved her in Being John Malkovich) The next best thing is the performance of Raven Goodwin, who makes every scene she's in a delight. (Whoever did her hair in the last scenes should have won an Oscar.) Next: the always adorable Jake Gyllenhaal, playing a nerdy 17 who falls for the Keener character. (Whoever did his hair, though, should be fired...it's sooo black and shiney!) Next: a small part by Dermot Mulroney, resembling a young Sylvester Stallone--very cute.

The dialogue is smart. I found the pacing quick and it held my interest. The other actors are good enough. There are some worthy ideas introduced. I loved the scene with Gyllenhal and Keener in the car and later, the one with Keener and Goodwin in MacDonalds.

On the negative side: gee--these women are so damned spoiled, self centered and highly unrealistic! We're supposed to care about them but they make it hard! The Emiy Mortimer character is about as sexy or interesting as a dishrag, and has the same amount of presence. Who could imagine her succeeding as an actress? She should definitely get a job in an animal shelter. The Keener character has delusions of grandeur, trying to peddle off her childish crafts as "art" at ridiculous prices. When she got a job at the one-hour photo, it was the best thing she ever did, (after giving birth.) However these girls didn't stand a chance, with the mothering given them by the smart talking (supposedly) mom who doesn't have a good word to say about any men, but wants the plastic surgeon to like her. The answer to her problems is liposuction.

I suppose this will amuse or touch people who can identify with these people more than I could. It seems like there's a lot of talent here that could better be used on something a little more weighty.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Little Movie.......2007-05-11

Lovely and Amazing is a feminine picture (albeit still watchable for a man) and it is also a deeply depressing story that briefly peaks into the lives of two women and their mother. It is slow and somewhat awkward but it retains it's positive side at the end with notably almost no resolution whatsoever. The film paces itself very slowly, yet somehow works well because it is written and handled with a refreshing eye. Nicole Hilofcenter (Sex and the City) directs.

Catherine Keener plays one of the daughters, Michelle, a 36 year old unemployed mother of one young daughter. Her husband is easy to relate to for a man and his patience as a character is exceptional because Keener's character has a highly volatile temper and she is for what it's worth completely unreasonable, yet somehow likeable at the same time. She sees herself as an artist and we watch her fail at that and then become a clerk at a one hour photo. There she has an affair with her 17 year old boss played by Jake Gyllenhaul. Things unfold for her as expected and I for one feel she gets what she deserves.

Her insecure younger sister Elizabeth, played by Emily Mortimer, on the other hand is originally dealt a fair hand and ironically gets it taken away as her insecurities are realized. She sleeps with an actor who is boorish enough to be honest about whether she is sexy or pretty enough to be an actress. You see, her being self-centered is seen as a requirement and that actually made it more fun for me to watch her fail. She is finished with her one night stand with this actor, and asks that he critique her body. She stands naked in front of him in a surprising, awkward and daring (for Mortimer) sequence. Mortimer is certainly attractive enough to watch her fully nude for this long but it's such a cold and bleak scene that really comes out of nowhere, it is certainly not meant to be sensual. She comes as who she is, vulnerable and probably not ready to enter the world of acting. The film is loaded with moments like this that go against the grain and ultimately help the characters get used to themselves as much as they may resist.

Their mother is in the midst of getting liposuction and the risks of surgery do indeed show themselves. She has adopted a young African American girl which makes for some interesting comments regarding race as well as she is enrolled in a "Big Sister" kind of program to get exposure to another black person. It's unfortunate that so little is said about their mother's past because she really ought to be the center of the film. Her story and her adopted daughter's story may have been intended to be delved into further...perhaps some was left on the cutting room floor.

All of the characters' fits of selfish vanity are always answered. That seems to be the running theme and it gives you a different outlook on these things despite these characters being fundamentally good people. Is it really so wrong to ignore or displace blame for your own vanity so easily? If so, isn't it society that is doing it to us or should we be accountable for it? Do we create our surrounding culture enough to pay the price for being ingrained within it's sins? Is there anything we can do about it? I know one thing, my latest job interview may go a hell of a lot better if I comb my hair and where a really nice suit then if I don't. Then again just like anything, vanity has it's excesses. Just as Lovely and Amazing finishes it's value in helping us ask interesting questions, it ends as unconventionally as it unfolds. It's no classic, but it is films like this that if other filmmakers take note it can certainly provide different avenues for expression.

4 out of 5 stars "Lovely and Amazing" shows an interesting view into a family of women........2006-12-09

This is the second film that writer/director Nicole Holofcener has made, and I think that she has succeeded very well in making a highly original film with very interesting characters. Some people feel that the dialog is very good, although on occasion it felt a bit off to me. The story doesn't really go much of anywhere, but that's not really the point of a film like this. The acting in this movie was uniformly very good among the women.

"Lovely and Amazing" documents several days in the life of a mother and her three daughters. The mother, Jane (Brenda Blethyn), is in the midst of a mid-life crisis and decides to service herself through a liposuction treatment. As she is going through with the procedure, she asks her daughter Michelle (Catherine Keener) to take care of her younger, adopted sister Annie (Raven Goodwin). Michelle is a house-wife/artist who becomes so enthralled in her work of home-made miniature chairs that she asks ridiculous prices for them before storming out of stores at their disapproval. The third sister, Elizabeth (Emily Mortimer), is rescuing homeless dogs in between visits to her agent. Having just completed her roll in a Hollywood film, Elizabeth does her best to stay a humanitarian en route to what she wants to be success.

Eventually, all four women's problems are projected in full effect. Jake Gyllenhaal reprises his role as the adolescent roué who somehow ends up bedding Catherine Keener (just like Jennifer Aniston in "The Good Girl"). He is perfectly cast with his dark, sultry looks, and wild puppy eyes. Raven Goodwin played her part naturally well and shined on every scene. She is clearly a very talented actress and I've notice recently a lot of child actors on screen are really getting better in their roles. Finally we have Aunjanue Ellis who I believe is one of the most underrated African-American females on the screen today who has dramatize her role just as well as the rest of the cast, she seriously needs to have bigger parts to show off her full abilities. The men in the film have smaller roles because this is a film about (but not exclusively for) women. They include Jane's cosmetic surgeon, Michelle's husband, Elizabeth's boyfriend, Kevin McCabe (a star who Elizabeth reads for a part with, played by Dermot Mulroney).

"Lovely & Amazing" is a crazy entertaining movie. It has everything, liposuction, statutory rape, fast food, show business, and possibly rabies. Director Nicole Holefcener apparently had a lot to say and I quite enjoyed it. If you're a fan of any of these actors, then I would recommend this movie to you.

5 out of 5 stars Another wonderful film by Nicole Holofcener !!!.......2006-08-26

When I watched her film Walking and Talking, at the Angelika Film Center in New York, almost 10 years ago, I was totally impressed with the simplicity of the story and the perfect tone. Nicole Holofcener is definitively one of my favourite directors. I am a film producer, and I would love to produce a film directed by her. As simple as that. Here, with Lovely & Amazing, she did it again. It's just perfect. The film has a wonderful balance, a subtle pace, a connection with reality that is quite unusual and difficult to find. Her characters don't talk all the time, but they listen, and so do we, the audience. Lovely & Amazing is a film that totally meets its name: it is absolutely lovely and amazing to watch.

4 out of 5 stars good.......2006-08-18

This film springs from a long-neglected script by the late John Cassavetes. The script was directed by his son Nick and stars Sean Penn, who was set to star before the elder Cassavetes died. Penn plays Eddie, an alcoholic ne'er-do-well who loves his young wife Maureen (Robin Wright Penn) too much. When she is brutalized by a neighbor, Eddie goes nuts--and lands in a mental hospital for 10 years. When he is freed, he finds Maureen remarried, to contractor Joey (John Travolta), with whom she has two children. But Eddie's love is too strong not to draw him back to her and make one final plea for her affection. A great showcase for all of the actors involved (the cast includes James Gandolfini, Harry Dean Stanton, and Gena Rowlands), with a particularly fine performance by Sean Penn. The film has the make-it-up-as-you-go feeling of John Cassavetes's work, as well as the kind of naked emotions that were his hallmark. --Marshall Fine

4 out of 5 stars Decent Homage to John Cassavetes.......2007-05-31

"She's So Lovely" is based on a script by the legendary writer/director John Cassavetes and is directed by his son Nick Cassavetes, who has recently directed "The Notebook" and "Alpha Dog." I've never seen a film by John Cassavetes and I've read reviews that complain about the missing depth of characterization that is normally associated with his films. I can see that being a valid argument, but "She's So Lovely" is an interesting, powerful, and funny film with dynamite performances by all. Robin Wright Penn plays Maureen, a young woman pregnant with her husband Eddie's (Sean Penn) baby. Eddie is a little crazy and tends to disappear for long periods of time; He's also known for his short temper. After Maureen is beaten and almost raped by her neighbor (Tony Soprano himself, James Gandolfini), it sends Eddie off the deep end prompting Maureen to call the local mental institution to pick him up. When they come to get him, Eddie shoots one of the men and winds up getting ten years. When he gets out (under the impression he's only been in for 3 months), he finds Maureen has had his baby and is now married to Joey (John Travolta) with whom she has two other daughters. It's the second half of this film that really gets convoluted. While John Travolta is absolutely dynamite in the second half, it didn't strike me as believable. During Eddie's stay in the institution, Maureen didn't write him a letter, call him, or send him a picture. Now, ten years later, with him out Maureen suddenly wants to leave her husband and children behind to get back with Eddie. It's entertaining throughout, but the end of the film is something you're going to find yourself shaking your head about. As for the performances, they are fantastic! Robin Wright Penn (who has spent the last few years in quirky independent films) really pulls off this role, even when her character is making unbelievable decisions. Sean Penn (whom John Cassavetes had in mind for the role when he planned to direct it) is terrific, but delivers a performance that's much quieter than his usual flamboyant, but great, performances (see "Mystic River" and "All the King's Men"). Travolta really stole the show for me, because he delivers some of the best lines in the film. Nick Cassavetes is a talented filmmaker and this is a nice homage to his father's legacy, but it wouldn't have hurt to tweak the script slightly.

4 out of 5 stars "Love is so difficult": a crazy couple's romance .......2005-12-17

This movie is hopelessly out of step with the times - evoking one of the 60's European cinema's themes of questioning the bourgeoisie lifestyle. It's a fascinating, irrational celebration of passion, even if these feelings have destructive consequences and involve unquestionably insane, violent, socially dysfuntional behavior. Taking an unflinching look at urban bar-flies who live in a hotel worthy for crack addicts, the subversive film is emotionally messy, ambalivalent in its social values, theatrical but gritty, deeply romantic but totally debauched.
The three main characters are repellent, but not nauseating, because they have such flair, are darkly funny and display touching humanity. The actors playing them (Robin Wright Penn, Sean Penn and John Travolta) go not for realism or the usual Hollywood character arc, but for what they see as artistic "truth" in any given scene. Whatever. Oops, I mean, all three are outstanding.
Robin Wright Penn is, at the beginning, pregnant and smokes and drinks, looks like she shoots up heroin, and constantly trips over her high heels all over the sidewalk. It seems to be raining all the time, too. She walks and talks like a street hooker in the old Times Square. Even with all this, she, to me, truly is so lovely and heartbreakingly tragic, beautiful and not quite right in the head and bad news.
This film has that oh-so hip mid-90's indy Miramax flavor. (Put it along something experimental like Leaving Las Vegas from a couple of years before and it's not really that weird.) As you can read anywhere else, this script is by the late, some say great, American film rebel John Cassavetes (hence the theme mentioned above and the ever-present raw feelings) and was directed by his son, Nick. There's a strong sense of mise-en-scene, and for such a wacky story, it's well-paced, lean and taut, and Cheese Doodles leave an orange stain on your fingers. But I digress. I must have been channelling Eddie Quinn, Mr. Penn's character.
Check out Penn's acting genius in this cheerfully deranged flick. Like several of his verbal riffs: he speculates on his wife's clairvoyant abilities and goes off on, "Can you type 170 words a minute? Can you sew? Can you dance? What can you do?" and his rather elaborate drink order a little while later before he goes on about seven women controlling the world at their computers. This stuff has to be seen and heard to be believed.
In fact, by watching the DVD's extra feature, An Actor's Look at Cassavetes, a sit-down with the Penns and Mr. Travolta, this movie could be seen, to a certain extent, as the Penns' acting workshop - like, say Hurly Burly. An opportunity within the confines of the Hollywood structure to exercise acting chops for all involved, including the guy from the Sopranos, James Gandolfini, as the alcoholic rapist neighbor, as well as Harry Dean Stanton and Gena Rowlands. In the discussion, Robin finishes Sean's spoken ideas and I instantly comprehend their palpable chemistry on screen.
John Travolta, back in the day, is at the top of his game in the movie's second half as the maybe-gangster guy who snatched the lady out of the gutter. He has that Pulp Fiction, Get Shorty-era cool, magic charm going on here, both witty and goofy. Watch for these fun, showy hand gestures he does.
The music on the sound track is suitably bizarre enough. There's a big band standard-sounding opening by the most idiosyncratic Bjork and slightly mesmerizing, creepy songs by Grace Jones.
I could extend this essay, but I've covered my main points. If you want to know the plot, watch the movie or read some other review.

5 out of 5 stars Not Real but Really Good.......2005-07-15

First let me just say that all of you who only gave this movie 2 or 3 stars just because of the ending are a little silly. If you thought the movie was good but chose to dislike it because the character didn't do what you would have done in this situation are SILLY...its a MOVIE. This movie is rich in it's uniqness and characters. It's story of love gone completely blind..so blind that any thing goes. Even though none of us would take our emotions as far as the characters in this movie did,,its fun to imagine,, "what if". Sean Penn plays very well in this roll. 3 Words I would use to describe this movie; Gritty, Heartbreaking, & Raw. A Must See !! : )

2 out of 5 stars well acted, enormous let down of an ending.......2005-01-10

I wathed this movie i TV just recently, who cares about the swearing being taken out and what not. The movie had very good acting one of the main reasons why i kept watching it although i can't stand seeing Sean Pen drama movies. I found his rehabilitation beliveable although he acted like same-old in a couple parts.

My major gripe with the movie as with many of the movies i've watched late night, is that the ending left me thinking, "WTF? why did i watch this?" because the movie made utterly no sense, i mean no completely stable woman in their right mind would do this because its probably the most selfish thing they could have done. She must've been a little off as well, maybe thats why they made a great couple. Plus the fact that the husband (john travolta) seems to be the only normal person in that whole part of the movie, and the sense i got from the other people involved, sean pen and the wife (i forget her name) seem to think that the husbands reactions are strange. MAKES NO FREAKING SENSE!

i swear if i see another well acted movie that ends like crap, I will lose faith in the movie making industry. Maybe this is why i never really heard of any good movies in the 90's (besides popular ones), cause all their endings sucked.

1 out of 5 stars She's So Lovely.......2004-01-30

I didn't like this movie. I watch it and the very next day I found myself thinking about how that movie ended and how it bothered me. I will never watch this movie again and I will let my friends and family know. For someone to actually leave their life behind, a wonderful family, and children for a crazy person who can't even stable himself out is pathetic. I just don't like the fact that she pick a messed up person to replace probably the best 4 people in her life. They should have ended it differently and maybe then I would like it, but for a moive to bother me after a night of viewing, I wished that I would have never stayed up to watch it.

5 out of 5 stars David Niven.......2007-05-06

This is such a great old movie, one of David Niven's best in his earlier days of acting. He plays a great romantic role!

4 out of 5 stars A VERY GOOD PLOT.......2007-04-21

I love David Niven. He is one of the best comedy actors! I probably would not have bought this one if I had known it has music and dancing, but, I'm glad I did! The screenplay is very clever, and David handles it masterfully! Romero is also good. Interestingly, Diane Hart sounds like Audrey Hepburn. I wonder if Hepburn copied her, or, is that maybe a certain British style. But Hart does a good job as the female star's side kick. If you're a fan of classic comedy, you will like this one, and fast forward thru the boring musical numbers, unless, or course you like that sort of thing.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-07-26

I purchased this movie and I had never seen it before, and I didn't know what to expect. The movie is about a Chorus girl "Jannet Jones"(Vera Ellen)and she is working for a hot head director "Frosty"(Ceasar Romaro). One day she is running late for rehearsal and the driver for millionaire "B.G Bruno"(David Niven)gives her a ride to the theater, she unknowingly leaves her purse in the car and when the driver brings the bag back to her everyone thinks she is B.G Bruno's girlfriend. So frosty Decides to make Jannet the star of he play in hopes of getting B.G to finance it.People start giving her things and charging them to B.G Bruno. So he decides to go down to the theater to clear the matter up.Now Jannet and B.G have never met each other, and when they do meet Jannet mistakes him for "Paul Tracy" a man who is supposed to interview her for the newspaper, she and B.G are attrated to each other and He dicides to pretend like he is Paul on order to keep seeing Jannet.I don't want to give away everything. But it is a great movie I highly suggest it to everyone. This movie is a must have for any dvd collection. But I must warn you the film quality isn't great.

4 out of 5 stars "Roan Group" version seems to be the best print.......2006-07-10

This film is in the public domain and it has resulted in many different DVD issues, all seemingly taken from different originals and resulting in some poor quality DVDs. There's little in the reviews or packaging to assure us of just which ones are the best. However, the DVD by "Roan Group Archival Entertainment" appears to be among the best. I'm certainly very well-satisfied with the print and sound quality of mine and, without having seen all of them, I can only assume that it's at least one of the better versions, if not THE best. I'd have no hesitation recommending it.

She's an original, that Sinead O'Connor, even when taking on a repertoire as old and seemingly as intractable as her homeland's own rocky shore. The Irish singer draws liberally from her 2002 Sean-Nos Nua recording in this Dublin concert, holding her audience rapt while bringing a rich, full, almost New Age sound, strings and synth pads galore, to "Molly Malone" and other haunted "songs of the Irish soul"--as well as to "Nothing Compares 2 U" and "Fire on Babylon," both of which benefit from the update. There are no frills here, just the music (about 70 minutes' worth). That's admirable, but O'Connor's voice--powerful but a wee bit strident--becomes wearisome after a while. Even so, an excellent band, superb sound, crystal-clear visuals, videos of six Sean-Nos Nua songs, and even a 30-minute documentary about the album make this a memorable document, whether or not she follows through on her retirement plans. --Sam Graham

4 out of 5 stars Where Is Sinéad O'Connor?.......2006-03-29

Could this possibly the same Sinead O'Connor who railed her lyrical defiance through live concerts a decade ago? O'Connor was something else back in the days, her anger often seemed genuine and her deliverance always honest, but very raw.

O'Connor returned to her roots in 2002 with a tribute album to old Irish folk tunes, and the reviews were generally good. A concert tour followed and the tour of Ireland was her first in years. Anyone but O'Connor would have turned these cliches into even bigger cliches, but unlike most singers of her age and heritage, O'Connor possesses a genuine understanding of these ghost songs.

She opens the show with the hauntingly painful, Molly Malone, in which she truly delivers. She even sings in her native language on "Oro, So Do Bheatha Bhaile" which has subtle hints of reggae jabs.

It seem as though she's sacrificed the raw power she had a decade ago for a more subtle approach to each of her songs. The difference stands very clear on her old songs "I Am Stretched on Your Grave" and "Nothing Compares 2 U".

Her voice, not that different than it was a decade ago, but she rarely ventures into her old self, only on "Fire on Babylon" can you spot a little something of her former self. I firmly believe in evolving and maturing as an artist, but it wouldn't hurt her to venture into her old mode, if for but nothing else, her fans.

The extra material is always great fun to watch, and the documentary is equally entertaining. All in all, O'Connor is still a class performer, but maybe she's sacrificed a little too much of her old self for her Rastafarianism and deep conviction.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing emotional performance.......2006-02-14

After watching this DVD,you will realize that Sinead O'connor is a real human being and not just a controversial rebel who ripped up the Pope's picture and sports a shaved head, but also a loving mother and singer.Sinead's live verision of "Molly Malone" is amazing, every time I watch her perform this song my father and I break down to tears it's so emotional.Sinead nearly cries at the end of most of her songs and the audio on this DVD is just like being there(take my advice,I've seen her live)or listening to the CD,only much more powerful.I strongly recommend all serious Sinead O'connor fans to purchase this moving DVD!!!!

5 out of 5 stars great voice, great music.......2004-05-29

great concert, amazing voice, and an interesting documentary as an extra.

5 out of 5 stars Superb performance.......2004-05-03

I love this DVD. Not only do you see a 68-minute live concert given by Sinead O'Connor in Dublin in 2002, but you also have a 60-minute documentary Song Of Heart's Desire made at around the same time. This program describes the inspiration behind the great singer's recent album of traditional Irish folk songs Sean-nos Nua, and it was screened on TV last year. This prompted me to buy this disc. Very few singers I have seen on TV or in concert can convey such emotional intensity as Sinead O'Connor. My favourite track here is You Made Me The Thief Of Your Heart, which is excellent, and she also gives a stunning performance of Fire On Babylon. The folk numbers are also very strong, and I like them a lot. I highly recommend this DVD to people who like great singing and who have any interest at all in traditional Gaelic folk music.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Performence!.......2003-10-04

When this DVD was released I nearly melted because I had never seen Sinéad live. And seeing this DVD almost made me feel like a part of the audience. The shots of Sinéad and the band are great. I think the best part of this concert is Sinéad's voice. From the opening track to the last, Sinéad whispers her songs and sings as if to attack. Her voice is very rich and has amazing powers.
I think the only problem with the performance is that it was so short. Sinéad could have easily performed a few more songs. She didn't seem exhausted at all! But taking the songs she did play into consideration, I was very pleased with the selection. The only song which I actually considered boring was The Last Day of Our Acquaintance. But songs such as Nothing Compares 2 U (which is reconstructed in such a beautiful way that it no longer is annoying from being overplayed), I Am Stretched On Your Grave, Fire on Babylon and Thank You For Hearing Me made this concert orgasmic! Trust Me! I got chills watching and hearing it.

As far as the other features of the DVD, the recording of Sean-Nos Nua was very nice, but the videos were kind of, hmmm, boring. I have to admit I could actually not sit through them.

Having said that, the concert is worth the price, if not much more!
