Coasting on the successes of Gods and Monsters and George of the Jungle, Brendan Fraser turns in yet another winning performance in this fish-out-of-water comedy in which Pleasantville meets modern-day Los Angeles, with predictably funny results. Fraser stars as Adam, who was born in the bomb shelter of his paranoid inventor dad (a less-manic-than-usual Christopher Walken), who spirited his pregnant wife (Sissy Spacek, in fine comic form) underground when he thought the Communists dropped the bomb (actually, it was a plane crash). Armed with enough supplies to last 35 years, the parents bring up Adam in Leave It to Beaver style with nary any exposure to the outside world. When the supplies run out, and dad suffers a heart attack, Fraser goes up to modern-day L.A. for some shopping and long-awaited culture shock. More of a cute premise with lots of clever ideas attached than a fully fleshed out story, Blast from the Past is also supposed to be part romantic comedy, as the hunky Adam hooks up with his jaded Eve (Alicia Silverstone) and tries to convince her to marry him and go underground. The sparks don't fly, though, because Silverstone is saddled with the triple whammy of being miscast, playing an underwritten character, and suffering a very bad hairdo. Fraser, however, carries the film lightly and easily on his broad, goofy shoulders, mixing Adam's gee-whiz innocence with genuine emotion and curiosity; only Fraser could pull off Adam's first glimpse of a sunrise or the ocean with both humor and pathos. Also winning is Dave Foley as Silverstone's gay best friend, who manages to make the most innocuous statements sound like comic gems. --Mark Englehart

The movie has a good pace, with a lot of screen time dedicated to
Fraser and Walken, who give fresh and fun performances. Spacek
also gives a solid performance. Some parts drag, like the whole
gag about the bartender turned cult leader, and Silverstone is just
god awful. But otherwise, there's some quirky humor from Walken's
paranoid character and also some good lines from Fraser when he
meets 'reality'. Cute and upbeat overall. An overlooked film that is
certainly better than most of the comedy garbage out there.

The first time I saw this movie I watched because of the actors. Alicia Silverstone, and Brendon Fraiser. I have enjoyed both actors in other movies, and Blast from the Past is no different. I am a fan of Brendon Fraiser, he has such a great comedic sense, and in this movie gives a great performance. I particularly like the scene in the 40"s dance club. The swing dancing really captured my attention. All in all this is a great movie to add to your collection.

A paranoid scientist builds a full sized home in a large nuclear bomb shelter for his pregnant wife. A plane crash that he thinks is a bomb prompts him to whisk his wife down below, and they live in the shelter with enough supplies for 35 years.

But the father has an apparent cardiac episode in the early 1990s, and so they send their son (Adam) to the earth to buy supplies. He meets a beautiful girl named (surprise!) Eve, who befriends him and helps him to find his way in the world.

There are many funny and entertaining moments, and Brendan Fraser does a great job of playing the well educated, well behaved son. I lover it when he tells the guy at the memorabilia store to stop taking the Lord's name in vain. The store owner says "Why, do you have a problem with it?" Adam says "Yes, I have a BIG problem with it!"

Adam not only has a lot to learn from the world, but the world has a lot to learn from him. This was one of the most entertaining movies I've seen in a while.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Mazinger Rebirth!.......2006-02-24

This dvd/series is totally awesome! I watched every episode at least 2 times when I grew up in Taiwan. This dvd/series brought back lots of good old memories, like most of us, these kind of thing reminds us of our innocent childhood and frankly keeps us forever young in some ways.

Mazinkaiser is the 3rd robot of the series from the original Mazinger or Mazinger Z. The second robot is Great Mazinger or GX-02, which was part of the original ANIME series from the late 70's early 80s era. There is the fat funny robot Boss Borot in this DVD! All 3 mazingers make appearance. Also Arphordai A the original female robot and another female robot named Venus.

In case you didn't know. The Bandai release Mazingers are amazing. Too bad I didnt discover them earlier, so far I have GX-01 Mazinger, GX-02 Great Mazinger, Gx-11 Diana Angel. I missed out on Boss Borot and Garada(the skull head dude with blades).... Couple online shops for Bandai diecast mazinger figures are Imageanime and Heros Club The Art Of Toy(or Chogokin & Tin Toy). Some cool Mazinger HISTORY pages are mazinworld and Mazinger Z page. I urge Mazinger fans to check them out.

Overall this a must buy DVD/series for all Mazinger fans, especially the OG ones. Peace. BTW Getter Robo Armageddon is pretty cool too.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome alternate storyline from the original.......2004-12-28

Just like some of the reviewers here, I also grew up watching the Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger series back in Puerto Rico in the early to mid 80s. Mazin Kaiser delivers a storyline that takes a detour from the original, but keeps the same feel as the original series. Great animation, as I would expect from Go Nagai, great sound effects, and the actors do an awesome voiceover. If you're a fan of Mazinger Z (or Tranzor Z as it was called in the US), or Great Mazinger, then you'll like Mazin Kaiser. Definitely a collector's item.

5 out of 5 stars Maiznkaiser with drawal.......2003-11-03

Well that long waited volume II is here and as usual it does not disappoint. I would go into detail but that would spoil it for those who have not seen it yet. Need less to say that the action is intense as always. The animation is crisp and sharp. As for the sound effects they are fantastic.
Maybe if ADVfilms.com realizes that there is a high demand from the sales of Mazinkaiser. Just maybe they will release Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger on DVD here in America. I am aware that there are more dvds of Mazinger Z out there(about 3 or 4) but they are in Japanese with English subtitles, which is not a problem for me. Now the only problem I see is that they say they that they can be played in any dvd player which is untrue. All dvd(s) are created to work for only one certain region of the world and it will not play on a dvd player that is from a different region.
Once, I did receive my copy of the DVD. I was disappointed to read on the back of the casing that this would be the final episodes. During the final battle it leaves the possbility of a future emergence for the evil Dr HELL. E-mail ADVFILMS.COM and let them know you want more Mazinger dvd(s) created for us. Also tell them to contact Amazon.com to ditribute them.

*** The following IS A SPOILER do not read unless you have already seen the dvd.

*** During the final battle Mazinkaiser is at the door steps of the evil Dr HELL. It seems that the armies of the island are no longer there for the DR. The only option left for the Doc is to retreat and fight another day. Well, here is where the creaters of Mazinkaiser have left the possibility for the series to continue. You see it seems that the Doc's rocket that he was escaping in calapsed during maiznkaiser's final attack. The entire island was on fire as this occured. So it could have been some other form of explosion that just so happened to obstruct Koji's view leaving him to believe that the Doc is dead.

5 out of 5 stars Another excellent installment.......2003-11-01

The first DVD caught me by surprise, and I snapped it up as soon as I saw it. Being a longtime fan of Tranzor Z/Mazinger Z, and knowing of Mazinkaiser only as a video game character to replace Mazinger Z, I knew it was a must-have.

Then, I saw that the second volume was due out shortly. Once it arrived, I picked it up too, and was not disappointed. It has the same excellent animation and campy, over-the-top storyline we expect from a Mazinger series, as well as (of course) the super robots themselves.

My only complaint is that this is the LAST DVD in the series, and that it contains only 3 episodes. Mazinkaiser must have been only a 7-episode miniseries. Still, it was quite thrilling, and no punches were pulled. I hear there are Mazinkaiser movies out there as well, so I wait on them with baited breath.

Long story short, if you're a Mazinger fan, get this DVD. It's not for kids (it had graphic violence and some nudity, like the first DVD), but it'll make you feel like one.

5 out of 5 stars A must see for the 70s/80s generation!.......2003-10-10

Mazinkaiser,
The only ultra robot, with the capability of wreaking havoc into the heart of evil! On the first volume, Mazinger Z, and Great Mazinger, two of Japan's mos powerful titans, duke it out against Baron Asura, and the nefarious Doctor Hell. Mazinger gets kidnapped, and Koji finds out, that the answer for this new menace, with old enemies, is Mazinkaiser, built by his grandfather, Dr. Juzo Kabuto, who built Mazinger, in hopes that he could stop Dr. Hell's evil plans of new world order. In this volume, Koji finds himself, fighting the ghosts from his past... Anyway... you need to see this one, and buy the first one, if you have not bought it yet!!!! A remake of the 1972 series, MAZINGER Z, you will find this series, worth watching, and collecting.

The title character is a pint-sized caveman with a mop of spiky hair that makes him look like Gohan in Dragonball Z. Flint was frozen in a rock shell by Petra Fina ages ago, then found in the 25th century by the twins Tony and Sarah Goodman. Their scientist-uncle at the Bureau of Time and Space revived Flint but could only preserve his father's spirit in a powerful stone ax. The Bureau needs detectives: the evil Dark Lord (who resembles the Phantom of the Opera) is trying to capture all the mysterious creatures known as TimeShifters--little beings who possess magical powers. His agent is none other than Petra Fina, ineptly abetted by her henchmen Dino and Might. The trio provides a comic villainy that recalls Team Rocket in Pokémon, a similarity the presence of the cute little TimeShifters reinforces. Flint, Sarah, Tony, and the TimeShifter Getalong travel through space and time to block Petra Fina's various missions. In "Jitter Bug," they visit 2nd-century Japan; in "Eldora," 16th-century South America. It's all silly, harmless fun aimed at small children, which is why this 39-part series plays on Fox Kids. Contains the first three episodes: 1. "Hammerhead Rock," 2. "Jitter Bug," 3. "Eldora." Unrated but suitable for all ages. --Charles Solomon

This is a great show from when i was back in Junior High. Its a great show.

3 out of 5 stars A very cute anime! ^_^.......2004-06-04

I am one of those 'hard core anime fanatics' that likes to watch everything from Inuyasha to Trigun to Cardcaptor Sakura, but I still can't help but love this series! To me, it has a charm that other series that people tend to compare this to just don't have. I've never cared for Pokemon, but I love Flint!

The only major failings that I feel these DVD's have is one: the fact that they don't include a subtitled version with an original Japanese audio track. That made it very unpopular with people such as myself, who tend to dislike american dubs. I believe that since this series aired on FOX kids, they should have included a subtitled version to make the series worth buying on DVD. After all, if you just wanted the dubbed version, you could have recorded it off TV.

The other problem that I had was that I also don't care for the fact that they released so few episodes per disk.

Overall, if you just want a series that will make you smile, roll your eyes, and laugh, this series is the one for you!

5 out of 5 stars Flint the Time Detective: Something Just Plain Silly.......2003-10-02

Hello, my name is renamon_is, age 11, and for those of you who don't know, I'm here to review The 'Flint the Time Detective Blast From the Past (Vol. 1)' DVD. As you can guess from just looking at it, it's just 100% "Anything But Serious". For all the "Hard-Core" anime people out there, this is definitely NOT for you, at least not to buy. But, if you see it somewhere go ahead and rent it just for laughs- This show is SO stupid it's funny. It's about a young caveboy named (you guessed it) Flint, who lived with his Father chasing wild Dinosaurs and such. Then one day, the Evil Petrofina the Time thief and her henchmen, Dino and Mite came from the future and turned poor Flint and his father into fossils. And so, later in the 25th century, two kids dig up the fossilized versions of Flint and his dad (plus a good-guy time traveler named "get along") and take them home to defossilize them. Flint's dad turns out being stuck as a slab of rock though, but the professor figures out a compromise that you'll just hafta watch for yourself. Flint learns English, and so everyone decides that to raise a caveboy in modern times would be a good idea. Later Flint becomes a 'Time Detective', and their adventures lead to talking stone mallets, snake-birds that turn everything into gold, armored knights, queens of 7th century Japan & more. If you and your family are looking for something along the lines of "Pokemon" or "Digimon" then this is for you. Plus several voices from the cast of Digimon add to the hilarious fun of this adventure. I give it 5 stars and a "HOOM BA HOOM BA HOOM BA!!!!!"

5 out of 5 stars Blast from the Past is truly a blast.......2000-08-02

This video has pretty good plot, about a small caveboy, Flint, and his father, who get caught in "time wars" if you would call it that, and end up in the 25th century. It's a good-hearted show that's suitable for all ages, since when the small creatures they're after, called time shifters, are turned evil by Petra Fina, Flint doesn't fight them to make them good again. He makes them remember their good inside. And that sets a good example for children of all ages.

5 out of 5 stars A VERY FUNNY FILM..........2006-12-27

have seen this movie twice and have loved it both times. It is a funny and endearing romantic comedy that is peppered with a terrific cast and excellent performances. I would gladly watch it again.

Calvin Webber (Christopher Walken), a nerdy, nutty scientist, and his traditional and very pregnant wife, Helen (Sissy Spacek), are living in California in fifties style splendor in the early nineteen sixties, when the Cuban Missile Crisis occurs. Buying into the red scare of the day and convinced that attack by the communists is imminent, they immediately go underground into the super deluxe bomb shelter that Calvin had had the foresight to build under his house and fully equip with enough supplies to last thirty five years. No sooner do they do so, Calvin's fears are reinforced, as suddenly a force of great impact shudders overhead. Thinking that they were hit by an atomic blast set off by the communists, they hunker down for the next thirty five years, waiting for the radiation to dissipate.

In the interim, they have a baby boy, whom they name Adam (Brendan Fraser). As Adam grows up, he is unknowingly caught in a time warp with his parents, as they have no contact with the outside world. Adam's world view and values reflect that of his parents, as his entire life, thus far, has been spent underground soley in their company. When the thirty five years are up, Calvin surfaces briefly to check the state of affairs topside. What he sees, he misinterprets, and upon his return to the bomb shelter ends up having a heart attack. He and Helen then dispatch Adam on a reconnaissance mission to get needed supplies.

What transpires when Adam ventures into the outside world is very funny and often poignant. As played by Brendan Fraser, the thirty five year old Adam, a fresh faced, polite virgin with no fashion sense, has a Dudley-Do-Right quality and a load of goofy, sincere charm that ensures the comedic success of this film. His foray into the outside world, his endearingly innocent interpretation of all that he sees, and his interaction with others will leave the viewer laughing. When he runs into Eve (Alicia Silverstone), the hard edged, appropriately named, beautiful blonde with a heart of gold, he is smitten. Together they will leave the viewer hoping that Adam and Eve will find the Garden of Eden.

Christopher Walker is wonderful as the slightly nutty, paranoid but brilliant scientist. Sissy Spacek shows a distinct comedic flair as the patient and long suffering wife who buys into her husband's vision of things. Dave Foley of "Kids in the Hall" fame is terrific as Eve's drolly funny, gay roommate. Alicia Silverstone, while ostensibly the weakest link in this otherwise brilliantly cast comedy, still manages to give a more than acceptable performance as the cynical Eve. It is Brendan Fraser, however, with his aw-shucks, innocent veneer, who deftly steals the show right under everyone's nose. His charming and funny, ingratiating performance is one that will have the viewer watching this film over and over again. This is a must have comedy for one's personal collection.

5 out of 5 stars Very funny and entertaining romantic comedy .......2007-05-20

Perfect vehicle for Brenden Fraser. Good script, cast, comedic timing. I have watched it 3 times. I like more each time

4 out of 5 stars Fun movie with Walken and Fraser shining.......2007-05-14

The movie has a good pace, with a lot of screen time dedicated to
Fraser and Walken, who give fresh and fun performances. Spacek
also gives a solid performance. Some parts drag, like the whole
gag about the bartender turned cult leader, and Silverstone is just
god awful. But otherwise, there's some quirky humor from Walken's
paranoid character and also some good lines from Fraser when he
meets 'reality'. Cute and upbeat overall. An overlooked film that is
certainly better than most of the comedy garbage out there.

5 out of 5 stars good info.......2007-05-11

Lots of helpful info for everybody. You never know when you may be in this situation.

4 out of 5 stars Great romantic comedy.......2007-03-28

The first time I saw this movie I watched because of the actors. Alicia Silverstone, and Brendon Fraiser. I have enjoyed both actors in other movies, and Blast from the Past is no different. I am a fan of Brendon Fraiser, he has such a great comedic sense, and in this movie gives a great performance. I particularly like the scene in the 40"s dance club. The swing dancing really captured my attention. All in all this is a great movie to add to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Blast to Watch!.......2007-03-17
