This shaggy-dog fable barely drew fleas when it arrived in the winter of 1986. Now critics refer to it as a winning, offbeat classic. What took 'em so long? Probably the fact that director Roger Spottiswoode (Tomorrow Never Dies) and screenwriter Ron Shelton (Bull Durham) were chasing something very elusive: a cockeyed, scatological look at delayed glory. Robin Williams plays Jack Dundee, a meek bank VP in Taft, California, who daily relives the humiliation of a bobbled pass in the game against Bakersfield. Not content to live out his days as "Butterfingers" Dundee, Jack hits on a plan to "rewrite history" by restaging the Big Game. Taft's now-over-the-hill quarterback, Reno Hightower (Kurt Russell), reluctantly goes along with the harebrained scheme to redeem his buddy. The guys' wives (Holly Palance and Pamela Reed) shake their heads and play along. At once zany, sweet, and nostalgic, this small-town chronicle strives for, and achieves, folk-legend status. 5 out of 5 stars "Say Good-night, Gracie.".......2007-06-12

I remember the first time I was introduced to Burns & Allen (the brilliant married duo of George Burns and his wife Gracie Allen), Between George's dry wit and Gracie's brillianty orchestrated ditziness they were quite the pair. Plus, the early episodes feature incidental visits from the Carnation Milk spokesman, who shows up while Gracie is serving coffee to guests, or any time, really. This is the spokesperson's opportunity to sell the condensed milk from the contented Carnation cows, magically produces a pineapple upside down cake out of his briefcase, or adds the perfect touch of milk to Gracie's tea. Plus, there are the great co-stars. Their neighbors, Harry (John Brown, and then Fred Clark) and Blanche (Bea Benaderet) Morton are constantly bickering and rolling their eyes at Gracie's antics. Believe me, there are many antics, too. I don't even know where to begin! The quality of these episodes is not "high" in comparison to the technology of today, but is quite standard for the television shows of the 1950s. They were preserved on kinescope. This meant that a recording was made directly off of a television screen, hence, there is an ovular look to the scope of the picture, and some of the scenery appears quite cut off. Nevertheless, these shows are wonderful. I encourage you to watch these, to see how George Burns got his start on television, before he went solo with his wisecracking shenanigans. Yes, he smoked a cigar back then, too.

4 out of 5 stars Live vs. Filmed Burns 'n' Allen.......2007-03-12

As a student of TV history, I think I can clarify something.

Some writing here love the later Burns and Allen shows for their marvelous wit.

Those episodes were shot on film and thus have a better visual quality.

They were NOT, however, as experimental or strange as the earlier episodes--which are the ones I, and some others, enjoy more.

The earlier live shows were indeed still playing with the format. George would address the audience more. He would walk through the invisible 'walls' of the set, refer to the camera, and other strange shenanigans.

In addition, musical numbers would crop up in odd places--right in the middle of scenes or monologues with little justification--and the 'ads,' such as they were, were just incorporated right into the show.

I find all this stuff amazing--exactly because it was not the norm later.

For those who love the earlier, more experimental, live shows, the later filmed episodes are merely watered-down.

And for those who love the later episodes as unusual compared to other sitcoms, the earlier live episodes are merely strange or even a botch.

Chacun a son gout.

5 out of 5 stars Burns and Allen Vol. 1&2.......2007-01-18

I purchased this for my wife - she absolutley loves it. Some people have complained about the quality - we have no issue with the quality. In fact, I think it adds to the "ambiance" of Burns and Allen. I don't want a remake I want to see Burns and Allen just as they were and this is exactly what you get with this DVD. I will likely purchase additional volumes.

1 out of 5 stars All Burns & Allen DVD's.......2006-12-24

DO NOT BUY-PERIOD. As a die hard fan of the show, who watched the episodes in the late 1970's like all college kids did back then, I can tell you now - these are NOT those eoisodes. These are like the first seaeon (1951) where they were experimenting on the format, every episode is in terrible condition, and have the Carnation milk commercials during each episode making them even worse, if that's possible. These are NOT the slick episodes where George sees all of Gracies schemes on a TV in his den over the Garage, or where Gracie takes every man's hat and puts them in a closet where they end up forever. Those black and white episodes looked like new. If the last couple of season's worth of episodes, from the late 1950's were sold on DVD, in episode order, sans commercials, that were repeated on Ch. 9 in New York City in the late 1970's they would make millions. They were GENIOUS. They made you laugh so hard, your stomach hurt. That's the Burns & Allen Show I remember and loved. They were even funnier than the Honeymooners and that's a bold statement. Again, DO NOT BUY ANY OF THE PRESENTLY SOLD Burns & Allen DVD's on the market at this time (Dec 2006).

4 out of 5 stars Not the Kingfish and not Jack Benny either- Intermittent laughter only.......2006-05-17

This is one of the first classic TV situation comedies, with wacky and somehow charming Gracie, and cigar- puffing wise-guy straightman George. This is one show which I found funny, but not that funny. Perhaps George was a bit too clever for me, and his personality a bit harsh and gruff. And this in comparison to his great friend Jack Benny who always seemed to me a more loveable character. The whole way the show was conducted , again with incidents usually involving Gracie, and with George's commentary providing a good share of the laughter, I always found, confusing.
Just not my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars best of times is good times!.......2007-06-25

Best of Times is a overlooked classic from the 80"s!
Kurt Russell is great as the old hero football star
who winds up in a car repair shop and Robin Williams
in his best role ever as the pathetic bank manager
who's life is out of control and both team up to
relive their youth by starting up a football game
with the stronger rival team that whipped them years
ago. Of course they win the game and all ends well but
it's worth watching this classic comedy.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Times.......2007-01-17

It's a fun filled comedy about highschool football in a small town. Robin Williams and Kurt Russell are great as they replay the game that shaped their lives

3 out of 5 stars Excellent scenery from Taft, California........2006-05-10

The film is a typical football story, where the underdog wins the game. In Best of Times, the underdog is a collection of out-of-shape, out-of-practice middle aged men who work towards the goal of playing a winning football game against their better-prepared counterparts from across the highway. In this film, the underdogs are from Taft, a real town that still has a functioning oil well industry, while the better prepared team is from Bakersfield, a major city in California.

In the game depicted in the movie, the underdogs begin by playing poorly. But the team's athletic abilities change for the better shortly after a sudden thunderstorm douses the field and changes it to mud. The change appears due to the fact that a star player, Reno Hightower, joins the team.

Most of the time during the film is devoted to Robin Williams' efforts in convincing the people of Taft that a high school football game, from some 15 years back, should be replayed with the original players, most of them tubby in their middle age.

This film contains excellent images from Taft, California. The film begins with an excellent narrative of the early history of Taft. Recently (April 2006), I discovered Taft, and visited the Oil Museum, and generally enjoyed the unusual aesthetics of the bobbing oil wells found in the area. I thank the museum volunteer for the guided tour, and for ringing up all those oil well theme souvenirs in the gift shop. The film lovingly features the bobbing oil wells as a backdrop for much of the acting. What artistic cinematography!

The citizens of the town, and their occupations, provide excellent local color. For example, one finds enjoyment in the characters of the bank president, employees in an automotive work shop, and members of the Caribou club. As add-ons, we find token episodes with teenagers dressing and acting as teenagers, and a dog busily rooting the home team. A number of sight gags decorate the narrative, for example, Robin Williams pretending to be busy at work (reading an upside-down paper and holding the phone upside-down); a wobegone loaner automobile crashing into a little brick garden wall; the Taft football team getting in shape wearing ladies' pink leg warmers; the fact that the Bakersfield football team includes a murderer on parole (Doctor Death); and a green rocket vehicle spewing green smoke as it slowly motors down the street followed by football fans.

The film suffers from its periodic bad language. Once might be enough. Even the kids' movie, Back to the Future Part III and E.T. has some off color language, which adds a thespian spark to the dialogue. But the bad language in Best of Times continues, again and again and again. Isn't there a bowdlerized version of this movie that can be shown to kids? Also, I was somewhat dismayed by the brothel scene, and by Robin Williams and his wife getting undressed together. Although all we see is cheesecake-level undressedness, kids will get the message that something else is afoot. Was this really necessary? (Also, Robin Williams is too hairy. A few hours of tweezer-plucking would have made him look like a human being, instead of like a member of the primate genus macaques.)

To conclude, this film is a must for fans of California history. Taft played an important role in California's oil industry. The film is a must for those interested in California's "inland empire," that is, territory including Bakersfield, Fresno, and other towns. But for those interested in "underdog" sports movies, there are plenty of better choices, for example, Rudy, Miracle, or Hoosiers.

3 out of 5 stars Robin and Kurt Unusual in this 80's Cult Classic.......2004-10-14

Robin Williams and Kurt Russell give a performance different from their norm. I have never liked Robin or Kurt that much, but I liked this film because it is likeable, minus all the profanity and other tactless nonsense included in this film. The storyline was the most acceptable part. I purchased this DVD about a year ago, and as soon as I finished watching this film, two things occurred to me. A) This film does present itself in an oddly, almost irreverently comedic tone and B)The Best of Times, though certainly interesting, should not have recieved the acclaim that many people gave it. It was never a critics choice, however, and rightly not, because it is at best a B- kind of thing. It is, however, worth checking out because it's a Sunday night classic.
BOTTOM LINE: Don't waste 2 hours on it if you hate small towns, football, a combination of the two, or bad acting by no-names included in the less than all-star back cast.

4 out of 5 stars A underated classic.......2004-01-26

I first saw this movie when it was out on VHS. Yes, it is that old of a movie. From the start, I thought this movie was a classic. Jack Dundee (played by Robin Williams) is living in a state of agony because of a dropped pass in a highschool football game. Reno Hightower (played by Kurt Russel) was the quaterback, the only good quaterback the town ever had, who threw him that pass. The town in the movie is a typical small town where highschool football is big. Unfortunately for Robin Williams, that was the one chance the town had for a championship season. Robin Williams gets the idea to replay the game with the same players on both sides. Without giving away the plot, this is one movie that is worth getting. It will keep you amused and rooting for Williams throughout the whole movie.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST DVD Set Of Live Benny Broadcasts.......2006-04-17

The last reviewer I am afraid has missed the point completely of what this DVD release is supposed to be. A public domain company like GoodTimes does *not* release episodes of the Benny show from the more commonly seen filmed episodes that aired for years afterwards in syndication. These are kinescopes of *live* Benny shows broadcast in the early 1950s, and as a result they come from source elements that will NEVER look as good as the filmed shows. That's just the nature of the beast one deals with if one wants to see these live shows from the 1950s again, whether they're Jack Benny or Burns And Allen. So it's not fair to dismiss this set just because one is seeing kinescopes instead of filmed programs.

Secondly, this set is of all the Benny sets put out by public domain companies is the BEST one available and should be picked up over all others that market the same episodes with some variations. The reason why Good Times is the one to get is because they are the only company I know of that leaves the episodes uncut, which means leaving the original commercials for Lucky Strike cigarettes alone. Other companies hack these out in an annoying fashion, but here the show plays uncut just as it first aired and on the Benny shows this is a must, because his commercials were always integrated into the program itself.

Don't dismiss this set based on the first reviewer's lack of understanding of the source elements and the kinds of programs that end up on the PD releases. This is the one to get if you want to see vintage live TV as it should be experienced.

1 out of 5 stars DEFECTIVE DVDs - AND TERRIBLE SOURCE MATERIAL.......2005-04-07

Not only are these transferred from terrible source material (interestingly, with an initial disclaimer stating they were made from the best source material available), but most critically, one cannot SKIP from scene to scene - or even episode to episode!! You are locked in Lousy-Source-Material-Purgatory.

Do NOT purchase these. Good Times Video has a real problem on their hands with this poorly thrown together release.

When, oh when, will somebody do right by Mr Benny?

No Hollywood studio was willing to buy or distribute this 1974 family film made in Texas, but it managed to find a considerable audience anyway in the U.S. and become a minor classic under its own steam. While Benji's production values aren't everything they could be, and the acting is at best uneven, the movie is really held together by the immense charm of the unassuming mutt who plays the title character. He may not look as impressive as Lassie or Rin Tin Tin, but poor stray Benji (played by a pooch named Higgins) is as brave and resourceful as they come, especially when a couple of neighborhood children are kidnapped and in need of rescuing. And what about that romantic subplot: Benji falling for a pampered pup from the good side of the tracks. Director Joe Camp earned himself a profitable franchise with Benji and its several sequels, but it was this first film and the debut of a new canine icon that stirs pleasant memories. --Tom Keogh

2 out of 5 stars Stay of the couch you stoopid dog!.......2007-04-28

Benjy just won't listen. This dog refuses to be housebroken and after several attempts by inpatient owners, Benjy is finally taken to the pound. Benjy escapes and joins the circus, along with long time rival, Curious George. At least Lassie was smart.

4 out of 5 stars An entertaining family film about a lovable canine friend........2007-02-15

BENJI is one of the finest films made about the trials and errors of society, as seen through the eyes of a cute male canine. This pooch wants nothing more than friendship and understanding from his daily interactions with the human species. He befriends a pair of siblings and their housekeeper who call him Benji and treat him as a respected family member.

Through the course of the film, we are given a dramatic presentation of canine emotions and perceptions, showing how closely a dog's world resembles our own. Benji develops a romantic interest as well. He is undoubtedly the hero of this story, as he courageously comes to the rescue of his human friends after they are kidnapped. There are some intense moments in the film dealing with the horrors of abduction, but through it all, Benji comes out the winner and is given his due recognition.

This film is highly recommended for family viewing. Both old and young will probably find it a worthwhile lesson of life and its challenges through the eyes of "man's best friend".

5 out of 5 stars Benji.......2007-01-04

I purchased this DVD for my neice. She thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a wholesome story that I feel kids and parents will approve.

5 out of 5 stars A True Masterpiece.......2006-03-28

As a kid, I always thought of Benji as a cool dog who got along with everyone and was very playful. Now as a young adult with a much matured mind, I view the canine from the other side of the picket fence with the hole...

From a professional film making standpoint, I admit the movie is subpar in terms of acting and casting. Throughout much of the film, there are stagnant pauses in speech which, understandably, turns away many a viewer. I know I felt the same way when I saw "Sixth Sense" for the first time. However, the soundtrack, comprised mainly of one song, Charlie Rich's theme "I Feel Love," is a phenomenal addendum to Benji's personality and despite the fact it is played on numerous occasions throughout the film, it is done in different ways every time. Different tone, tempo, and emotion are used in such a way that you actually feel what Benji is thinking. Who needs words when the music can tell the story by itself?

That being said, aside from Terminator 2: Judgement Day, no other film has made me cry as much as this one. About 3/4 through the film at the climax, the camerawork and cinemagic, as I like to call it, force me to fight back the tears (and fail miserably everytime). It is then that I remember why I fell in love with the movie and with dogs. They can feel human emotions and connect with them in a way no other animal can. They are not corruptable like human beings. They are loyal and loving to the bitter end. Watch this movie with an open mind and I guarantee you will be fighting back tears as well.

1 out of 5 stars Poor Quality Product and Not Close-Captioned.......2006-08-01

This particular title probably appeals to people over age 50. I purchased this as a gift for a 92 year old man who enjoys this program. The quality is not what I would call acceptable by today's standards since these videos look like they were copied from VHS tapes. The colors appear washed-out and the contrast enhancement was set too high. I was EXTREMELY disappointed to find out they ARE NOT CLOSE-CAPTIONED since the recipient is deaf. The bottom panel of the box states that the original Bonanza theme music is not on these DVDs either. My mistake was not asking questions beforehand. This was a bad buying experience and I will never purchase anything else from GoodTimes DVD. Buyer Beware!

Benji: Off the Leash features dozens of close-ups of adorable mutts, guaranteed to make any dog-lover's heart melt. Colby (Nick Whitaker), a clever young boy, rescues a scrappy pup from his cruel father (Chris Kendrick), who breeds purebreds with an eye towards profit but not the animals' well-being. The puppy grows into a scruffy but smart dog who, with the aid of another plucky stray, helps Colby and his mother improve their lives, and the life of a lonely elderly neighbor as well. Along for the ride are two bumbling, slapstick dogcatchers and a wisecracking parrot. Benji: Off the Leash bubbles over with sentimentality that some viewers will find heartening and others will find unbearable. But though the story meanders, the movie is never cynical--writer/director Joe Camp sincerely believes that if people were more like dogs, the world would be a better place. --Bret Fetzer

1 out of 5 stars Disturbing, Awful Story - NOT for Young or Sensitive Viewers.......2007-04-28

I was horrified by this movie. My 5-year-old daughter and I watched this together hoping for a normal, uplifting, cute animal movie. The pointless, meandering, nonexistent storyline was the least offensive thing about it. Not much "FUN AND HILARITY" ensues in this disgusting downer. The 'movie' includes a psychopathic father who abuses and neglects his breeding dogs AND his son & wife (why doesn't the wife DO something?!), two idiotic dog catchers, some peripheral characters who show up in the last 10 minutes to 'save the day' (too little too late). Among the horrid scenes are a small puppy being throw across a room; a depressing backyard filled with 'breeder' dogs shoved in cramped, dirty cages; the implication that the psycho dad throws a bag with a runt puppy off a cliff into a river; a sick and dying female dog who has been overused for breeding; psycho dad verbally abusing his son; the implication that the wife is being hit; NO ONE doing or reporting any of the abuses (until the end - when the psycho is finally hauled off to jail). Truly one of the worst, most sickening movies I've ever seen. The issue of animal (and kid/wife) abuse is a topic of social importance that should be addressed, but NOT in a movie advertised as a rolicking, heartwarming kids' movie. This is NOT FOR KIDS. Not for anyone, really.

2 out of 5 stars Stick to the Original Benji; This May Not Exactly Be a Family Film.......2006-11-12

If you're looking for family picture, something cheerful and joyful that would make you smile and laugh, you should see some other Benji films, but not this one. Sure, the dogs are cute. But I think probably most dogs on this planet are cute, and that alone does not make a good family picture. You may think `Benji: Off the Leash!' is a film about Benji. Yes, it is, but it also includes several things that almost made me stop watching it.

A kind boy named Colby (Nick Whitaker) secretly keeps an abandoned dog who tries to rescue his ailing mother ill-treated by her cruel owner. If you think this is a good story (and it is, I agree), wait a minute. The dog is abandoned by Colby's own abusive and malicious father who tosses away the puppy in the opening. The same cold-blooded daddy treats badly Benji's mother too in order to get more puppies! (Oh, I forgot to say he is a dog breeder, and he needs money!) And beating someone is also suggested....

OK, I admit this film is made with good intention. It makes a good point about our society, where animal abuse is often deeply related to another type of abuse. But I thought this is a film about dogs, or adventures of these lovely dogs running around, and the film's DVD cover strongly suggests that kind of content. Of course, these serious issues could be in films made for kids, but here's another problem.

That is, the film's terrible script that is confusing and often pointless. There is another dog abandoned by an unknown driver. The film could have explored the friendship between them, but before it does, it strays into several silly slapsticks by two Animal Control officers (with such old gags as falling in the mud). The rambling story goes nowhere, and the social issues like animal abuse is clumsily treated. The lazy pace of the film with this kind of unnecessary comedies by stupid characters not only kills everything that could have been much better lessons for kid, but also conceals the real merits of watching this film, that is, watching cute dogs.

In short, we don't need this entry while we have the original Benji, and many other films from Disney, Pixar, and other studios, which the kids probably would find funnier and more educational.

5 out of 5 stars Benji Off the Leash- will he pull it off?!.......2006-08-30

This movie is a heartwarming "Benji" classic of a throw away puppy from a puppy mill that the dad doesn't want because it is a mix.It is sad at times, but there is plenty of hilarious parts where I laughed so hard I couldn't breathe. All the actors were great and the movie had a solid center.I would not reccomend for small children to watch as the dad throws the puppy across the room at the first. But this is a very good movie as "Benji" nearly always is!

5 out of 5 stars *Beloved Benji... A class act... Then, now, and always*.......2006-04-25

Benji & Joe Camp did it again!!! Joe has a way of melting Benji (and now newcomer Shaggy!) straight into our hearts... and makes sure to leave us wiser along the way. No one does animal movies like Joe Camp and Benji. Benji... I loved him then... I love him now... I will love him always.

What begins as a pleasure trip for Benji and his adopted human family soon turns into a tale of mystery, suspense, and international intrigue in this 1977 sequel to Joe Camp's hit movie, Benji. Without subtitles to decipher the mostly Greek dialogue, kids and grown-ups alike view the action from the limited perspective of this sweet and talented mutt. Here's what Benji knows: 1) Ever since a stranger pressed a tiny metal plate against his paw, a handful of seedy-looking characters (and the occasional Doberman) keep trying to capture him; 2) He's hungry; 3) He misses Mary (the chatty housekeeper played by Patsy Garrett), the kids (whom he rescued from kidnappers in the original), and his lady love, Tiffany (noticeably droopy from an unmentionable "condition"). Not a great situation when stranded a few thousand miles from home. The action chugs along thanks to numerous chase scenes, a smattering of gunplay, and a heroic ending; but the overall effect falls short of the original. (Ages 4 to 9) --Liane Thomas

3 out of 5 stars Run, Benji, Run!.......2006-07-31

This second film consists mostly of scenes of Benji running. That doesn't have to be a bad thing. The first Benji film consisted mostly of scenes of Benji running, too, but it was quite good. This follow-up isn't as good, but for other reasons.

On the positive side, returning writer/director Joe Camp stuck with something unusual that he did in the first film--he did the film from a dog's point of view. That doesn't mean that the film is in first person from Benji's perspective. Imagine more a dog directing. The content, kinds of shots and kinds of angles are mostly what a dog might do. It made the first film, with its very unusual structure, a success, and it more or less makes this one, which also has an unusual structure, well, not exactly a success, but it makes it "kinda work".

A couple factors bring the success rate down a bit. The story takes place in Greece this time--in a move that seems like maybe the crew and cast wanted a paid vacation in Greece--and a lot of dialogue is in Greek, without subtitles. Although interesting for adults, that's a particularly odd move for a family film, and the goal here is definitely to make a family film--Camp even announces this at the very beginning onscreen.

Also odd for a family picture, most of the human-sourced interaction in the film features people attacking or chasing Benji--with chloroform, with meat cleavers, with fruit, with a big mean Doberman, and with guns. Not that it's graphic in any way, but the concept is there, and Benji's running is mostly precipitated by unfriendly people chasing him.

There is a complex plot involving scientific research, where they want to use Benji for nefarious goals, and where Benji seems to be world-famous, all of which is never explained very well. Heck, most of the dialogue about this is in Greek, although the science-oriented stuff is very sketchily explained in English at the end. Benji being so well-known is never explained.

And a final problem--even though the first film was also as if directed by a dog, there were important human characters who had some depth to them. That's not the case here. Benji's owners are hardly in the film and the villains are almost completely non-developed the short amount of time that they're in the film.

So we're left primarily with Benji running and running through Greece. Through airports. Through the city streets. Just outside of the city near some ancient ruins. The scenery is nice and nicely shot, Benji does some neat trained actions, and insofar as Camp explores everyday dog stuff, the film is rewarding. Heck, the chased-by-villains scenes are pretty rewarding, too, even if plotwise, you don't know exactly what's going on or why it's going on.

This may be the worst Benji film (and I don't know yet, since I'm just rewatching them now after not seeing them for many years), and it may not be a great film for kids for a couple reasons, but it is still very mildly recommendable, especially for fans of Benji films and animal films in general, or for anyone who wants a glimpse of what Greece was like in 1977. It's also amusing to note how much Benji looks like Ron Wood.

1 out of 5 stars Harmless but terrible.......2005-01-11

I am stunned by the other reviews. This movie is harmless and okay for the young and completely undiscerning, but really terrible in most aspects: story, camera work, editing, and acting. A previous reviewer compared it to Babe and that is truly unfair to Babe -- to its fine story, good acting, and sweet message. For the Love of Benji looks like a ten year-old made it with a video camera. About half of the movie is Benji walking back and forth.(I suppose they needed these shots to fill in for the plot that wasn't there.) However, these scenes are preferable to the incredibly poor acting of the human characters and the ridiculous, albeit mercifully limited, dialogue. If you want to rent something to show to a five year- old that you can walk away from and not have to worry about content, Benji is it. If you want to rent something you can actually watch with your kids without being completely stunned by its badness, watch Babe, Finding Nemo, Mary Poppins or any of the other dozens of truly good kids' movies out there.

5 out of 5 stars benji pulls you in.......2004-09-09

this is a very good movie, and it seems like a real situation. The dog is trained very well. if you like this, you might wanta see the first Benji, Benji's Christmas, or Benji the Hunted. Benji the hunted made me cry hysterically, but it was still very good. Also you should see the newest Benji movie: Benji off the Leash. It's in theaters right now!!! I saw it, and it was really good!!!

3 out of 5 stars Good but not as good as the first one!.......2004-07-12

I rented this thinking it might be good as the first one and it's ok but the first one I really like the most. This one is about he takes a trip to Athens, Greece. He enjoys the trip but he gets lost and tries to find his family. The Greece theme is really annoying but it mostly has the the same score from the first one. The first Benji I think is great out of all three the other two is not as good but Benji is still a classic!

5 out of 5 stars Benji secures his fame as the world's most huggable hero.......2004-01-04

For the Love of Benji takes the world's most huggable hero all the way to Greece, but this wonderful Greek vacation becomes a nightmare for Benji even before he is loaded on the plane. A bad guy drugs him and tattoos something on his paw, and when he finally get to Greece alongside his girlfriend Tiffany, he finds himself camping out in a storage area for misplaced baggage. He manages to get out of his crate and escape, only to find himself lost and all alone in a strange new city - hungry, tired, and frightened, missing Tiffany and Paul and Cindy Chapman. The bulk of this film follows Benji in his seemingly impossible search to find his family. He searches in vain, becoming more and more depressed, but he does manage to make one new friend. Still, he has to guiltily steal food in order to live, and if all that isn't bad enough, several strangers including that bad man who drugged him back in the airport are doing all they can to nab him. Benji has risked everything to save his friends in the past, but now he has to use all of his intelligence and leg power just to keep himself alive while he strives valiantly to find and be reunited with his family. There's an underlying storyline, of course, of the bad guys and their evil plot, but what really matters here is Benji. The film builds up to a thrilling conclusion that almost equals the emotional power of the original Benji movie.

Some people may not know that the Benji of For the Love of Benji is not the same talented actor who starred in the original Benji movie. Higgins, the original Benji, was fairly old when he made Benji a household name in 1973, and the role of Benji for this second movie was played by Higgins' daughter (who was actually named Benji). Yes, this Benji is played by a female, but it does not matter. What is obvious is that acting ability courses powerfully throughout the Benji bloodline, as this Benji gives a simply amazing performance, in some respects bettering that of her dad in the original. There is much more action in this film, much of it taking place on the busy city streets of Athens; this little dog really has to run his legs off in this movie as well as navigate many obstacles and perform a number of actions that only Benji could do. He also faces a menacing, large, unfriendly canine enemy and has to avoid a number of gunshots. Most importantly, he has to show a wide range of emotions, as well, and this dog is truly an incredible actor. When he is supposed to be frightened, he really and truly looks frightened; the guilt he feels over having to steal food is obvious; the forlorn look on his face as he searches in vain for his loved ones looks heartbreakingly real; and when he is supposed to stop and think about his next move, you can almost literally see the wheels of his mind turning inside his head. Even the smallest and shortest of expressions - perking up at a certain sound, reacting to a smell, breaking out in excitement when he thinks he sees one of his family members - are performed with a level of skill few human actors could ever hope to rival.

I think the original Benji film will always be my favorite, but For the Love of Benji is not far behind. Children will probably enjoy this film more than the original because of all the action scenes it showcases. This Benji, just like her father Higgins, is among the most talented actors to ever grace the big screen, and I can't imagine my childhood (and don't plan on living my adulthood) without the presence of this greatest dog of them all.

Description

THE KILLER SHREWS They Devour Bones, Flesh, Marrow…Everything. Best known as Deputy Festus Haggen on Gunsmoke, Ken Curtis produced and co-stars in this schlock classic about giant shrews that consume their body weight every eight hours. James Best is Thorne Sherman, forced by a hurricane to take refuge on the isolated island of Dr. Marlowe Craigis (Baruch Lumet), whose experiments mutated the hungry critters. Thorne makes a friend in the doctor's daughter, Ann (Ingrid Goude), and an enemy in his assistant, Jerry Farrell (Curtis)—but they must all work together when the fur starts to fly! Special-effects veteran Ray Kellogg directed this film and its companion piece, The Giant Gila Monster, later sharing the directorial credit (with John Wayne) for The Green Berets. Approximately 69 minutes Black and White

I remember as a kid watching the horror channels on tv back in the 70,s. This movie along with the crawling eye, the brain that wouldnt die, and the creature from the black lagoon were my favorites. for those into the old sci/fi movies you have to have this one in your collection. no frills, no hi-tech computer special effects. just good laughs and drama.

1 out of 5 stars Does the Shrew Fit? No Way!.......2006-02-05

James Best wasted in snoozer about genetically altered shrews which turn into hungry little dogs. Why bother? Doesn't the world have enough hungry little dogs already? Boring dialog, bad pacing and a really absurd ending don't a good movie experience make. Not even bad funny as some reviewers would have you think. Not worth the ten cents (yes, 10 cents) I paid for this at Wal-mart.

"Alright, pour that into the plastic tulip glass, and garnish with a wind-up shrew!"

The Killer Shrews without Mike, Joel, Tom Servo, TV's Frank, Dr. Forester, and Crow is not a good movie. There is a reason why they chose this film to be a part of their mocking library. This "horror" film lacks in every critical category. It has shabby characters, very minimal visuals, sheep dogs in shrew costumes, and quite a bit of liquor consumption, while all the time never developing anything known as a "plot". The basis behind this film is simple, honestly, too simple. A random, uncharted island inhabited by a scientific experiment gone wrong. There are only six "survivors" who were all doing fine until Rosco P. Coltrane (aka James Best) arrived to the scene. It is after he arrives that liquor seems to be highly consumed, nerves never seemed to be unraveled, and more and more about these shrews are revealed. Nearly halfway through this film I thought that Henson might have been involved somehow with the creation of these shrews. There is even one scene in which there is a shrew hiding under the stairs, waiting for his prey, and you cannot help but feel a sense of admiration for the beast. It is rather cute, in a costumed dog sort of way.

This is one of the first films where you can watch the entire story unfold and feel nothing for these characters. Director Ray Kellogg was either still writing the script as he was shooting or was hoping to use the phrase, "It's my first time directing" for this silly excuse of a film. It is neither scary nor thrilling in any way. To begin, the visuals are horrendous. Between the overused stock footage of a saber-toothed shrew peeking in through the wooden fence and the only ONE interior shot used in the film, it was bound to make any sane viewer go a bit bonkers. I realize that Kellogg may have been trying to build the idea of entrapment or claustrophobia for his characters, but this sensation could never have been created with this cast. It became obvious to me early in this film that drinking was just as important as knowing your lines. In fact, if you didn't know your lines and chose to drink, director Kellogg would have considered it a strong move on the part of the actor. The Killer Shrews is not a film for recovering alcoholics. I saw this film as a perfect outlet for college students and their overabundance of drinking games.

The theories behind the creation of the shrews are classic "B" cinema. As I watched this horrendous film, I could not help but think of Romero's Night of the Living Dead. Did he see this film before creating his masterpiece? I know several have mentioned it in their reviews, but one cannot help but see the similarities. People cramped in a small space trying to survive while evil creatures of the night are pounding down the door. One cannot help but think that the Killer Shrews may have been on Romero's mind in the late 1960s.

Let's see if I have covered all the points. Horrible acting. Nobody actually has a character in this film. We learn nothing about anyone and feel nothing as they attempt to save their own lives from the killer shrews. There was one point in the film where Ann asks Thorne if he doesn't wonder about everything and want to ask questions. She asks him if he doesn't want to know about her accent. Suddenly, I was whisked away to a Lost memory and was waiting for all six of these character's lives to suddenly be molded together in a rather shocking way, but alas, that did not happen. The creatures were creative, but definitely not scary, even for the late 1950s. The shrew under the stairs reminded me, to quote Mystery Science Theater 3000, like a puppet. It made me laugh, which is your typical viewer's reaction to this type of cinema today. This was not a Ed Wood production in any way. This was far worse. Acting was not necessary to be in this film. If there would have been any range of emotion emitted from anyone in this film than I may have graded it higher than I did, but alas, there was none. No chemistry between the characters, no drive, no excitement, just pure alcoholism. Finally, there was the climactic ending that flies by faster than the beginning of the film. If the ending had been more intense, a bit spookier, and maybe even at night, than I think we would have had a stronger contender as a great film. Sadly, the ending looked exactly like the rest of the film, cheap and subdued.

Overall, I don't think I could watch this film again unless I had my old MST3K buddies with me to enjoy it. There was nothing of redeeming value in this film unless you count the action that the liquor bottles saw, then one would grade it higher. The shrews were laughable, the tension was non-existent, and the science of the film was never fully developed. There were so many avenues that Kellogg could have traveled to make this into a "cult" phenomenon, but instead he stuck with less than mediocrity and the result is this black and white film that puts a horrid stain on the "horror" genre. Instead, why don't you make a "Killer Shrew" drink and call it a night, the results would be better!

5 out of 5 stars Loads of laughs.......2007-02-01

I bought this for a freinds daughter, who is a comedien all by herself. She loves the shows and watches the DVD over and over. A great alternative to the junk on TV today.
I'm still laughing.
