Bob Hope - The Vietnam Years (1964-1972)

Starring:Bob Hope
Studio: R2 Entertainment
Product Type: DVD
Editorial Review:
Description
Originally broadcast on NBC, the 9 complete hour-long shows included in this set feature Hope's classic comedy stand-up and wonderfully entertaining sketches and musical performances with celebrity guests including Racquel Welch, Phyllis Diller, Neil Armstrong, Jim Nabors, Lola Falana and many more. While providing quality entertainment for the troops and to families across the nation, these specials also documented the history of one of the most turbulent times in America. Each show is narrated by Hope and includes information about his ambitious tours through Thailand, Taiwan and Guam as well as touching interviews with the soldiers he met along the way.
Hope's holiday salute to the troops became an instant favorite with television audiences. The 1965 special won an Emmy Award® and the special from 1970 is still ranked among the 15 highest-rated television programs to date. Bob Hope will always be remembered for his dedication to the armed forces. Back in 1941 he began the custom of traveling the world to uplift the spirit of American troops stationed over seas. This custom became tradition the Christmas of `48 when Bob, with wife Dolores, flew to Europe to entertain Americans involved with the Berlin airlift.
Always at the top of his game on the road, his devotion endured through the sixties and seventies, when American Troops were deployed to Vietnam. This 3-disc set captures Hope's most memorable moments as he performed for the troops from 1964 - 1972.

A gift for dad.......2007-06-28
My dad was drafted into the Vietnam War and was wounded on Christmas Day. Bob Hope did a Christmas show for the troops at the place he was being treated and we were able to see him in the crowd of men at the show that day. He was so happy that I baught the dvd's of Bob Hope's show for him for Father's Day.

THIS WAS A VERY NICE CHRISTMAS PRESENT FOR MY DAD, HE WAS THERE AT ONE OF THE SHOWS IN 1968,NOT ON CAMERA BUT HE LOVED GETTING TO SEE WHERE HE'D BEEN AND THE SHOW AGIAN AFTER ALL THESE YEARS. MY WHOLE FAMILY LOVED IT, THE FILM IS BETTER ON SOME SHOWS THAN OTHERS BUT VERY NICE OVERALL.
Bob Hope - The Vietnam Years (1964-1972).......2006-11-10
It was like watching a home movie as I had been at four of the performances and could relate wholly to them. The coverage of the shows that I was at was some of the shorter coverages, Long Binh, Dian, and Lai Khe. I have yet to make time to see the one at Clark Air Force Base. It was very enjoyable and that was the middle DVD as I was there during the time it took place.
Seems Like Yesterday.......2006-07-10
It really brought back my time in the Service and although I did not go to Vietnam (I was in South Korea from 1970-1972)I got a chance to relive seeing Bob Hope, Johnny Bench and others who gave up there Christmas to come and entertain the Troops. I wish I could shake everyone of their hands and thank them in person.

Bob Hope combines comedy with documentary entertainment.......2006-12-02
Exquisite, this DVD is an excellent portrayal of all that Bob was and is. The ribs, one-liners, and the charm are what make this DVD great. His interactions with one of the fearsome foursome giant Rosey Grier was incredible. Even Though Rosey towers over Bob, it almost seems as though Bob's presence is just a big. We need more entertainers and American's like Bob, especially during our current situation.

Like Fine Wine, Bob Hope Gets Better Over Time!.......2006-12-02
After watching the first two installments of this amazing collection of specials it amazes me the leaps in changes in quality. But that's not the only thing that's gotten better over time, like fine wine, Bob Hope just gets better. This time around Bob tours through Vietnam, USS Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and the USS Bennington.
Phyllis Diller is absolutely down right hilarious in her stint with Bob, creating a great combo of sarcasm and self cynicism. Then there's the usual suspects of Joey Heatherton, Anita Bryant, and Miss World; all gracing the DVD with their beauty, brains, and interaction with the legend, Bob Hope.

You'll Laugh Like You're in the Crowd.......2006-12-02
I watched this show as a child and now again as an adult, and it was as excellent then as it is now. I loved Bob's grace and jibes with the audience. His bit with my favorite Bond girl of all time, Ursula Andress, was the first place I ever saw the re-inserted foot in mouth punch line. Also, I didn't know old Bob Hope was so light-footed; his dance bit was quite impressive. All in all this was a great watch, it was very telling of its time, another instant classic from Bob Hope.

Bob Hope bring high hopes to US troops in Vietnam.......2006-12-02
This DVD is an excellent combination documentary, comedy, entertainment and the good ole boys that protect our countries ideologies. Bob Hope is classic, giving the troop everything they need to keep the hopes and spirits up, traveling in Guam and all throughout Asia. When the country needed him, the self-proclaimed "coward", he answered in a way only he could. We definitely don't have the television specials like this anymore.
Bob's sense of off kilter humor wouldn't fly in today's "PC" obsessed world, but it's still hilarious nonetheless. This coupled with his humorous interactions with the extremely gorgeous and talented female guests; Jill St. John, Anita Bryant, Janis Paige, and Miss World.
Jerry Colonna's different sketches and costumes were engaging and lovable, the one with the Siamese twin bit nearly killed me. While we still have the USO, because of Hope, it isn't the same without Bob.

Customer Reviews:
One of the most talented entertainers in TV history.......2006-12-02
Bittersweet, that's the best way for me to describe how I felt after watching this DVD, because while Bob's Show would go on, this year was the end of the specials featuring shows dubbed the "Vietnam Years." There's a juggling act in the show that, if done today, would leave people wondering if it was CGI or some sort of editing trick, but it was all talent and heart. The guy was simply amazing, we could use a bit of that showmanship nowadays.
Bob Hope, as always, was charming, funny, and a complete vaudevillian. I just wish we got to see more of him and Redd Foxx. Those two have incredible chemistry together, it's like they've been doing those kinds of bits for years-absolute professionals. I just can't seem to get enough of Bob, as I have his Comedy Collections on order!

Still Funny After So Many Years.......2006-12-02
I remember watching these shows as a kid, they were telling, amazing, funny, and inspiring. Now as an adult, they're a lot cornier than I remember, but still just as funny. Bob's so engaging and hilarious in his little quips with the audience, guests, and even the President of the USA. After watching this DVD I remember why I've always wanted to change my name to Bill, you have to watch it to understand. I think this is the first time they were called the USO, and because of Hope it's easy to see why they're still around today.

This Emmy award winning special follows Bob Hope entertaining our troops during the Vietnam War for the second consecutive year. Special guests included Joey Heatherton, Carroll Baker, Kaye Stevens, Anita Bryant and Jerry Colonna. In addition to his many shows in Vietnam, Les Brown and His Bad of Renown along with Miss World also joined Bob for traditional stops in Guam, Thailand, The Philippines, Wake Island and aboard the USS Ticonderoga
Customer Reviews:
This why Bob Hope won Emmy Awards!.......2006-12-02
Apparently, this special won an Emmy, and it's easy to see why. Showcasing the likes of Joey Heatherton, Carroll Baker, Kaye Stevens, Anita Bryant, Jerry Colonna and Miss World, the show is just as unique and humorous as the one prior. This time around, they travel to Guam, Thailand, The Philippines-with men hanging from trees, Wake Island, and aboard the USS Ticonderoga.
Bob's engaging, charming, and satirical interactions with the talented and beautiful women of the show are fresh and lighthearted. The sketch with Jerry Colonna as an army doctor was side-splittingly hilarious.
In an age when there was no internet, this special must have been eye-opening and awe-inspiring. While, we're supposedly in the information age and there's so much information out there, the style of information/documentary, humor, and heart is lost on our time. Bob Hope is truly one of a kind, and it's no more apparent then in this wonderful DVD.
