Editorial Review:

Befitting its boy-band sensibility, On the Line is an amiable vehicle for 'N Sync's Lance Bass, who makes his star-producer debut with this bright-eyed romantic comedy. Bass plays a Chicago adman who meets the girl of his dreams (newcomer Emmanuelle Chriqui) on the "L" train but fails to get her name and phone number. His roommates (including 'N Sync bandmate Joey Fatone) devise a scheme to find the elusive "L-train girl," and like the similarly plotted Serendipity, this love-struck scenario plays out with standard-issue subplots and supporting characters, propelled by a pleasant pop soundtrack and a soulful appreciation for the music of Al Green (who makes one of several celebrity cameos). On the Line was sanitized for a younger audience (with obvious dubbing to replace cruder language), but the squeaky-clean approach is refreshing, even when an end-credit sequence (featuring 'N Sync's Chris Kirkpatrick and Justin Timberlake) suggests a comedic vitality that the rest of the movie lacks. --Jeff Shannon

Amazon.com essential video

In the trinity of modern horror films, there's the father (Michael Myers of Halloween), the son (Jason of Friday the 13th fame, a knockoff), and the unholy spirit, Freddy Krueger of the Nightmare on Elm Street films. The spectral man who haunted the nightmares of unsuspecting teenagers with deadly consequences, Freddy (as played by Robert Englund) was a truly frightening bogeyman and icon for the '80s. Unlike the hockey-masked Jason, who dispatched horny teenagers with mechanical and monotonous ease (he never talked, never took off his mask), Freddy was a truly creative and diabolical villain, with a sadistic and blackly funny personality. The hallmarks of the Nightmare on Elm Street series were imaginatively gruesome suspense pieces, set in the overactive imaginations of the teen victims. The first film of the series, Wes Craven's truly intelligent and scary film, was so hugely successful it begat not one, not two, but six more sequels, each pretty much diluting the originality and horror of its predecesor. (Horror fans will fondly remember Drew Barrymore's assertion in Scream that the first Nightmare film was great but all the rest sucked.) Still, there's fun to be had in the remaining films in the series, seeing as a number of aspiring filmmakers cut their teeth on the continuing saga of Freddy. Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) and Chuck Russell (The Mask) worked on the third installment, Dream Warriors (starring a young Patricia Arquette), and Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2) came to prominence with the ingeniously macabre fourth film, The Dream Master, coscripted by Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential). Craven and original star Heather Langenkamp did return for the last film, New Nightmare, which presaged the tongue-in-cheek postmodernism of the Scream films and resharpened Freddy's ability to scare. --Mark Englehart

Talk about good old fashion Horror Flicks. After so many years have passed, I still get chills up my spine seeing this classics.

5 out of 5 stars the nightmare on elm street collection.......2007-05-13

this is a very cool dvd collection,it is not to scary and it has some funny parts and the best thing about it is that you can watch one part right after the other without having to go buy the next one.

5 out of 5 stars A well deserved 5 stars with one exception..............2007-03-29

I'd like to start things off by saying that, in my opinion Freddy is the best slasher icon to appear in the '80s. In almost every film, the acting is superb, and the special f-x are exceptional for the time. There is not as much gore as the Friday the 13th series, but a little more than the Halloween series.

Nightmare on Elm Street: by far the best of the series in every way
10/10
Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge: by far the worst in the series 2/10
Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors: Not the best, but definitely not the worst 6/10
Nightmare on Elm Street 4: Dream Master: Better than the second and third 8/10
Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child: Not as good as the fourth: 7/10
Nightmare on Elm Street 6: Freddy's Dead: One of the better ones in the series besides the first and last one: 8/10
Wes Craven's New Nightmare: I'm so glad Wes Craven is back to give Freddy his frightening kick back: 9.5/10

This is a good box set if your a fan of the series. I personally think that Jason is much scarier than Freddy. There are some creepy moments in the first nightmare, but after that they seem to get a little weird.

Sometimes grace and hope come in surprising packages. The title character of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a would-be glam-rock star from East Germany, undergoes a botched gender-change operation in order to escape from the Soviet bloc, only to watch the Berlin Wall come down on TV after being abandoned in a trailer park in middle America. Hedwig gets involved with Tommy, an adolescent boy who steals her songs and becomes a stadium-filling musical act. Suffering from a broken heart and a lust for revenge, Hedwig follows Tommy's tour, playing with her band (the Angry Inch) at tacky theme restaurants. Into this simple storyline, writer-director-star John Cameron Mitchell packs an astonishing mix of sadness, yearning, humor, and kick-ass songs with a little Platonic philosophy tucked inside for good measure. A visually dazzling gem of a movie. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars I Love Hedwig.......2007-06-27

Having seen this film in the theatre twice, I don't know what took me so long to buy the DVD - I enjoy it every time I watch it! It has great heart and empathy and the music is fantastic! John Cameron Mitchell is enchanting as well as the whole cast. It is absurd, outrageous and yes, lovingly done. I especially liked Michael Pitt - he is one of my favorite actors - puts his whole being into every character he portrays.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling Music that moves you!.......2007-05-07

a great movie , if you enjoy a good musical DEFINATELY take a second look at this film!

5 out of 5 stars weirdWildness.......2007-04-11

My daughters bought this film and both enjoyed it for its weirdwildness. I can't say that I did, but it's a generational thing I guess. They especially liked the music, but again I can't say that I did although I'm a musician myself. Clearly inventive movie making and excellent musicians doing exactly what they want to do, but... I guess it's a generational thing. I don't particularly like Andy Warhol's flicks, or Broadway musicals, or Wagnerian opera, or John Coltrane, Philip Glass, or Modest Mouse indy music either. What's an old classical guitarist to do when the Bach D-minor partita is pulled off the music stand and the cross-dressers appear? The topics are not quite my style, although emotionality is the same across the entire human race. Inventive, wild, weird, very well done, but not my style.

4 out of 5 stars An Inch Just Ain't Enough.......2007-03-30

Hedwig Robinson (John Cameron Mitchell) is a rocker. And she's got The Angry Inch beside her (and in her pants). As a young man, Hansel/Hedwig lived in East Berlin, right before The Wall came tumbling down. His sexual identity was always in question and when a cute, black, American soldier gives him a way out of the Eastern Bloc, Hedwig jumps on him (literally and figuratively). But he can't get to the other side of The Wall as a man, so an operation takes place to remove his vital functions below the waist ...if you get my meaning. Needless to say (if you pay attention to the title of the film), the surgery gets botched and leaves Hedwig with his "Angry Inch."

The anger is twofold. First is the failed operation; second is Hedwig's fury over stolen musical material by someone named Tommy Gnosis (Michael Pitt). Tommy is a rock-n-roll sensation, but it's all because of what Hedwig taught him in his early days. So Hedwig, in true b!tchy fashion, follows Tommy's rock tour around the world. But instead of playing in theaters and high end places, Hedwig and his Angry Inch band play at lowbrow restaurants, often to the dismay of its patrons who've simply come in to eat.

Hedwig's decline into obscurity is well played by director/actor John Cameron Mitchell. The musical soundtrack is very well done and the catchy tunes will have most movie watchers tapping their toes along to the rockin' beats. That he also remains angry at some of his band members is quite funny, actually holding them hostage by keeping their passports hidden away.

Revenge is the meal of the day as Hedwig finally meets up with Tommy again, eventually leading to Tommy's career demise and launching Hedwig into the spotlight. But is this what Hedwig really wanted? Not realizing the sacrifices she'd have to make, Hedwig decides to re-open her/his closet and show the world his/her true identity. He also sets free one of his band members who turns out to be a woman masquerading as a man, too.

Those willing to watch a film without sitting in judgement of the material will most likely eat this story up. It's quite funny, well acted, and has a rippingly good soundtrack. But if you're a staunch conservative or -- god forbid -- homophobic, you might want to pass on this one.

5 out of 5 stars Mind-Altering Viewpoint.......2007-03-24

First time I watched this movie I was kinda confused, but felt like I'd just been run over by a truck. Still, I came back a second time, and a third, and a fourth...
And each time it amazes me. The meaning behind this movie and the idea of what makes someone happy might not end up completing them in the long run. *sigh* How many people can this touch before it becomes a cult classic?
Oh wait, It already is! :)

A handful of people in the San Fernando Valley are having one hell of a day. TV mogul Earl Partridge (Jason Robards) is on his deathbed; his trophy wife (Julianne Moore) is popping pills with alarming frequency. Earl's nurse (Philip Seymour Hoffman) is trying desperately to get in touch with Earl's only son, sex guru Frank T.J. Mackey (Tom Cruise), who's about to have his carefully constructed past blown by a TV reporter (April Grace). Whiz kid Stanley (Jeremy Blackman) is being goaded by his selfish dad into breaking the record for the game show What Do Kids Know? Meanwhile, Stanley's predecessor, the grown-up quiz kid Donnie Smith (William H. Macy) has lost his job and is nursing a severe case of unrequited love. And the host of What Do Kids Know?, the affable Jimmy Gator (Philip Baker Hall), like Earl, is dying of cancer, and his attempt to reconcile with his cokehead daughter (Melora Walters) fails miserably. She, meanwhile, is running hot and cold with a cop (John C. Reilly) who would love to date her, if she can sit still for long enough. And over it all, a foreboding sky threatens to pour something more than just rain.

This third feature from Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights) is a maddening, magnificent piece of filmmaking, and it's an ensemble film to rank with the best of Robert Altman--every little piece of the film means something, and it's solidly there for a reason. Deftly juggling a breathtaking ensemble of actors, Anderson crafts a tale of neglectful parents, resentful children, and love-starved souls that's amazing in scope, both thematically and emotionally. Part of the charge of Magnolia is seeing exactly how may characters Anderson can juggle, and can he keep all those balls in air (indeed he can, even if it means throwing frogs into the mix). And it's been far too long since we've seen a filmmaker whose love of making movies is so purely joyful, and this electric energy is reflected in the actors, from Cruise's revelatory performance to Reilly's quietly powerful turn as the moral center of the story. While at three hours it's definitely not suited to everyone's taste, Magnolia is a compelling, heartbreaking, ultimately hopeful mediation on the accidents of chance that make up our lives. Featuring eight wonderful songs by Aimee Mann, including "Save Me." --Mark Englehart

Description

An intriguing and entertaining study in characters going through varying levels of crisis and introspection. This psychological drama leads you in several different directions, weaving and intersecting various subplots and characters, from a brilliant Tom Cruise, as a self-proclaimed pied-piper, to a child forced to go on a TV game show and the pressures he faces from a ruthless father.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-06-30

This is one of the very few movies that I felt a deep emotional connection to upon watching. Magnolia is truly a remarkable piece of artwork, and a must-see film for any movie lover.

1 out of 5 stars A miss.......2007-05-25

The reviewer who said this movie was a 3 hour downer is right. This movie plot turns on the influences the characters have on one another and how their lives all have common roots. But, if this is the point, it really misses the mark.

I found I could not empathize with any of the characters. Tom Cruise's character was very strange, and I sincerely did not understand his role. But the same goes for many of the characters. Magnolia could have withstood some serious editing. Many scenes were unnecessary, and the movie drug out way too long. Also, if you have a distaste (as I do) for movies which use profanity so flippantly that each curse word loses its power and meaning, you will be disgusted within the first 15 minutes of this film. I considered turning the movie off after two hours of watching, but felt I should finish it up since I had already invested so much time. I shouldn't have, though. The ending is one of the biggest cop-outs (not to mention completely illogical) I've seen in modern film. If anyone understands the significance in 'raining frogs', let me know. And don't let the cast trick you into watching it. Honestly, my opinion of the judgment of some of the actors has actually decreased since viewing this film.

I felt this film really had no plot, no direction, no significance. I rarely give anything 1 star, but I felt that I wasted 3 hours of my life watching this film.

Stay far far away.

3 out of 5 stars A 3-hour downer.......2007-05-24

These intertwining tales are full of anger, tragedy, obscenity, incontinence, and a rain of frogs. Where is the joy? Where (except in the final minute) is the redemption of the human spirit? Can the world really be this messed up - and even if it is, how is this entertainment?

Sorry. I was looking for drama and interesting stories; I got 3+ hours of depression and despair. Despite the fine acting by most of the cast, I truly don't understand what anyone would like about this movie.

3 out of 5 stars Tries a little too hard........2007-05-23

Magnolia is the story of a dying man (Jason Robards)who wants to see his estranged son one last time. Julianne Moore overacts as the former gold digger wife who has grown to genuinely love her husband too late. Wracked with shame, Moore's character is suicidal with guilt for her past as her husband lies on his death bed. Tom Cruise is the estranged son who makes his living as a mysogonistic and unhinged motivational speaker teaching men (who are a mix of Promise Keepers meets Snoop Dog)how to manipulate women into casual sex.

Besides the main plot of the spooky, croaking, dying man and his guilt ridden wife, there is the story of a naive and dim witted policeman's (John C. Riley) attraction to an emotionally unstable coke head. Several other stories intersect including William H. Macy as a washed up former child quiz show phenom, a present day version of the same, and a bitter aging, hedonist game show host who's done one to many television shows.

Personally, I would award Julianne Moore a lifetime achievement award for over acting, and Magnolia only adds to her body of work, but Cruise, as usual, is riveting and spell binding. John C. Riley and Phillip Seymore Hoffman (as the dying man's caregiver) alone are enough to make the movie worth watching.

Manolia is not for everyone but if you like movies that don't come from the Hollywood cookie cutting machine, you should give it a chance. Manolia just tries way to hard to be thought provoking and quirky but it's still draws you in.

5 out of 5 stars one of my top 5 favorite films of all time.......2007-04-25

I can't say enough about this film---it's got everything and is presented artfully. Just get it and watch it with an open heart. It's amazing.

It's impossible to walk away from John Q. without thinking about the film that could have been. The pathetic state of health care in the U.S. and the desperate behavior it engenders is not only worthy but edgy material; no doubt director Nick Cassavetes (She's So Lovely) and Denzel Washington (as well as Robert Duvall, Ray Liotta, James Woods, and Anne Heche) were drawn to the provocative pitch. The only snag is that John Q. has about as much edge as an after-school special. Washington plays John Quincy Archibald, a hard-working factory worker whose house stands to be repossessed and whose lovely wife (Kimberly Elise) is at her wits' end. When his extremely cute son collapses while rounding the bases in a Little League game, things go from bad to worse. John Q. takes a downtown Chicago emergency room hostage when he learns that the heart transplant his son needs won't be performed because his health care doesn't cover it. The action-drama that ensues--replete with one-liners, stilted debate, inept snipers, and multiple references to O.J. Simpson's white Bronco--is so littered with clichés that the issues, timely ones, get lost in a crescendo of melodrama. --Fionn Meade

5 out of 5 stars Justice for John Q!!!.......2007-04-21

Where do I start. Oh where do I begin! This is probably one of my favorite film. Denzel won an Oscar for Training Day, now I do like that movie, but this movie Denzel should have won it! He is amazingly passionate and heart felt to see a father care for his child. I love this movie. I love the drama, i love the script, and I love the acting. I do think that the whole movie is a great movie to watch fequently. I bought it and I feel so close to this movie. It grabs your heart, and make you have an awakening moment for the lives of this family. Love it Love it, oh did I mention that I Love it? :) Watch it . . . either rental or purchase!

4 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT WASHINGTON IS SUPERB .......2007-04-12

This is an excellent film and Denzel Washington gives a outstanding performance. This tense and gripping drama will have you balling your eyes out in the unforgetable climax! Nice DVD transfer.

4 out of 5 stars Pushes All the buttons.......2006-10-10

If you watch John Q, be prepared to have all your buttons pushed. This is easily one of the most manipulative movies I've seen in a long time. Bam! HMO's are bad. BAM! Doctors are only out for money! BAM! Hospitals are cruel, uncaring places. Bam! Insurance companies are scum! Bam! Police Chiefs are idiots!

Despite that, however, this is a good film to watch. Yes, you will be cheering for John Q and will be outraged at the way he and his family are treated by a callous system that allows the family to fall through the cracks in the medical care system.

Denzel Washington is, as always, terrific to watch as the poor schmuck who just never quite manages to make it, although he means well. I have to admit, I found the kid VERY annoying-- much too cute and perfect, but fortunately he wasn't on screen that much. The important thing is the message of the film-- it is a crime that in the richest country on earth there are people who cannot afford medical care.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product.......2006-08-16

I received this product earlier than I expected, and it was in great condition!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome movie.......2006-06-21

The first time I was this movie was in my health class. It is such a good movie. The story that is told in the movie is realistic and the actors played well. I even cried a couple of times during the movie. It's very touching.

Snakes on a Plane knows exactly what kind of movie it is, knows exactly what moviegoers expect from a title like Snakes on a Plane, and delivers the exact pleasures of a movie in which poisonous snakes are unleashed on a plane to kill an eyewitness to murder. Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, The Long Kiss Goodnight) knows exactly what he's doing in this movie and knows exactly when to pull out the superbad Samuel L. Jackson stare and deliver the infuriated Samuel L. Jackson bellow. The rest of the cast--including Julianna Margulies (ER), Rachel Blanchard (the TV series Clueless), Kenan Thompson (Fat Albert), David Koechner (Anchorman), Bobby Canavale (The Station Agent), and Sunny Mabrey (One Last Thing...)--play their parts with admirably straight faces and deadpan humor. Director David R. Ellis (Final Destination 2, Cellular) gives the movie the much-needed headlong momentum you would expect from a former stunt coordinator. In summation: A perfect piece of self-aware but not self-conscious high camp entertainment, blending comedy and thrills in perfect proportion. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars I laughed so hard...................2007-06-29

.....milk came out of my nose. And I wasn't even drinking milk at the time. It must have been snake venom.

I love Samuel L. Jackson........as an actor that is! ;^) I would not have watched this movie if he were not in it, because there was no way the plot could be anything but stupid. Well, the plot was pretty stupid, but Jackson made the movie work. There was plenty of action, and even though most of the snakes looked fake because they were CG snakes, the snake attacks were pretty good. I rolled on the floor laughing at several points during the film, so I guess it did have entertainment value after all. Nobody ever said a movie has to be a masterpiece of cinematography to be entertaining.

4 out of 5 stars Very funny movie that keeps you scared out of your seat!.......2007-06-29

I had a movie party recently and we watched this movie with about 12 people. Everyone was screaming and laughing the whole movie. Everyone said they thought it was a funny movie. My friends that I invited over had a blast during this movie. I can kinda see this movie becoming some sort of cult movie. The tagline that Samuel uses towards the end of the movie is very appropriate.

On another note, the bass in this movie from the airplanes was unbelievable! I bought this movie previously viewed for more bang for the buck! My Sister said this after seeing the movie, "Why didn't you buy me a copy?" In fact we have both seen this movie twice. My Sister also wanted to borrow my "Snakes On A Plane" so that she could watch it at her house.

*** Remember, I recommend that you buy this movie previously viewed or wait until you purchase it for $7.50 or less. Also, see this movie with a group of friends.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining enough, but far from great.......2007-06-27

I don't know quite what to make of this film. It goes from a drama to comedy to action. I say comedy, because most of the scenes involving the snakes are more humorous than anything. Other than Samuel L. Jackson's role, the acting was terrible (annoying at times). However, despite this fact, the movie did keep my interest. Just don't expect a great action film or a horror flick. This is neither.

2 out of 5 stars What's next? Killer bees on a plane?.......2007-06-25

Wow. With all of the internet hype on this film, I was really looking forward to seeing it. I've always liked Sam Jackson, but even he has been prone to make a few turkeys now and then.

"Snakes" is no exception. Sam is the only redeeming factor of this movie. Yes, he's super-cool and super-bad, but then again, so is the script.

The movie has a very basic premise and that premise is so outlandish that it destroys just about all of the film's credibility. Lots of snakes, lots of people getting bit, yeah ,yeah, but when a semi-nude woman gets bitten on her breast and another guys gets bitten on the 'you know what' whilst urinating, I knew this film was going to be nothing but cheap, gross-out gags that were put in the film just for the shock value alone.

Well, I wasn't disappointed, that's for sure. The film is very hollow and really doesn't have a point except to showcase Sam's ability to let the F-word fly on more than one occasion.

C'mon, Sam. You're much better than that.

And this movie could have been, too.

5 out of 5 stars I thought it was perfect!.......2007-06-21

Wow! What an outstanding film!

Huge cast! Flawless action! Remarkably scored!

"Snakes on a Plane" moves along very nicely. The scenery starts out revealing some beautifully unique shots of Hawaii. There is excellent camera work throughout the entire film.

Curse New Line for not supporting HD DVD, but the standard disc actually upscales very nicely on my Toshiba HD A2, and for the price I paid for the disc, I can't complain - I'll just never get to experience "Snakes on a Plane" for the first time in all of its high definition audio and video glory so long as I live, is all. The Dolby Digital 5.1 track is as astounding as Dolby Digital 5.1 allows it to be.

"Snakes on a Plane" is far from typical. This is truly a magnificent film.

It's all action, complimented by some sincerely funny subtleties. It's just one of those great movies...I highly recommend this film!

Masterpiece or masquerade? Lars von Trier's digicam musical split the critics in two when it debuted at Cannes in 2000. There were those who saw it as a cynical shock-opera from a manipulative charlatan, others wept openly at its scenes of raw emotion and heart-rending intensity. There is, however, no in-between. Dancer in the Dark is that rarest of creatures, a film that dares to push viewers to the limits of their feelings.

In her first and most probably last screen performance (she has foresworn acting after her bruising on-set rows with von Trier), brittle Icelandic chanteuse Björk plays Selma, a Czech immigrant living in a folksy American small town with her young son, Gene. Selma is going blind and so will Gene if she does not arrange an important operation for him. To cover the expense, Selma works every hour she can, cheating on her eye tests so she can keep working at the local factory long after her vision has become too unreliable to work safely. She sublets a house from a local cop, Bill (David Morse), and his wife, Linda (Cara Seymour). When nearly bankrupt Bill asks Selma for a loan, she refuses, but he later returns and steals the money, which she demands back in a furious confrontation. In the ensuing melee, Bill is fatally shot and Selma is arrested and put on trial. Will justice prevail?

Von Trier's passionate, provocative film runs all our emotional resources dry with suspense, giving us occasional flashes into Selma's gold heart and mind with superb song-and-dance numbers she conjures to banish the nightmare (Björk also wrote the score). At some two-and-a-half hours, it's not for lightweights, but anyone bored with today's smug, "ironic" cinema will relish this as an astonishing assault on the senses and a stark reminder of von Trier's uncompromising talent. --Damon Wise

2 out of 5 stars Dark~Psychological pornography garbed as "art".......2007-07-02

Director Lars von Trier's DANCER in the DARK is consummate cinematic incarnation of decadence, despair and corruption that comprises Post-modern Europe.Without Christian LOGOS to anchor Good, the Bad and the Ugly into categories reckoning a human's BEING, the director sinks into a nihilistic abyss. Innocence;edifying art(dance& music);fundamental relationality
[Motherhood/parental;friendship;collegial loyalty;childhood itself]is perverted in a Heideggerian anti-aesthetic. Joyce's PORTRAIT of the ARTIST as a YOUNG MAN receives its id chord doppel-ganger rendering in this pas-de-deux celebration of EVIL...

Star of this miserific vision,BJORK is the damned soul:condemned from Purgatory into Hell...rather than Heaven as Christian mercy provides after suffering purification(Cf Dante).David Morse'role as her police officer friend-turned-thief,and molesting pervert(& suicide/murderer)speaks for itself as damning verdict on The West as source of Justice(without/LOGOS God...everything is permitted~ Dostoyevsky).Rave reviews of many are based on FEAR:The CULTURE OF DEATH comprises the anti-Christian/rad-secularist West.Its feckless,self-apotheosizing adherents still refuse to acknowledge self-damnation and repent(See The DEVIL'S BACKBONE & more recent,PAN'S LABYRINTH).DANCER in the DARK reeks death wish.Those who applaud it are insane(though normal by PM standards).Viewers like myself ...bi-polar;

5 out of 5 stars Pushing the envelope of your emotions..........2007-05-14

A roller coaster ride into the human soul. If you are not moved after the ride, nothing will.

5 out of 5 stars Very upsetting but incredible.......2007-04-15

[...]. This is probably the most upsetting movie I have ever seen, but also the most well-written and well-directed. Bjork gives an incredible performance and soundtrack. It's a beautiful film to watch and appreciate, just be prepared for very emotional scenes that may be very difficult to watch.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but...........2007-02-17

I agree with most viewers that this is a powerful and disturbing film. It can tear a viewer's emotions apart, and perhaps justly so. But good as it is, "Dancer in the Dark" is also a deeply flawed film. First, the musical numbers; they seemed to me purposeless and obtrusive; telling the story straight would have given it more power and polish. Secondly, a classic tragedy also is capable of offering a catharsis, usually obtained by delicatedly handled irony (the villain--David Morse character--could have been divulged to a third party, for instance). Thirdly, filmed in Sweden and supposedly representing rural America, this movie is openly and vitriolically anti-American. Selma's trial is the stupidest trial ever put on film, bigotry admitted, and the system of justice represented here is nothing but a sadistic machine torturing a guitless and noble victim. Yes, injustices like that do exist and should be put on film. Raskolnikov has a dream of a horse being stoned to death. Kafka has Gregor Samsa die in utter loneliness as cockroach. And Fellini gives us Gelsomina dying of unrelieved grief after a brute has killed a friend. Perhaps, Lars von Trier should have tried to imitate those masters. Or did he?

1 out of 5 stars Purely Putrid.......2007-01-29

If I could have given this movie negative stars, I would have. The music is horendous. The howling of my dog is a more soothing sound that listening to Bjork's squaking. Bjork reminds me of a bug-eyed stark raving mad drunken fairy on crack. I liken this movie to watching paint dry. Actually, I think paint drying has more of punch than this movie does.

Another reviewer said Gummo was "unlike anything else of TV." My Holy Goodness, how right they were. If a lunatic was voted mayor of a town, Gummo would be the film depicting the townsfolk who call such a place "home-sweet-home."

We are introduced to the following: two awkward, gangly teens who kill cats and sell the rotting corpses to a local grocery store for a dollar per pound; three sisters who are about as backwards as anything this side of Appalachian poverty; a seedy brother who pimps his retarded sister out to teenaged boys; a sinister-looking young lady who, obviously being on the slow side, enjoys walking around the town singing "Jesus loves me this I know" as well as the always depraved "A-B-C-D-EFG-" song. Along the way, we also meet a young man wearing nothing but some swim trunks and a pink bunny hat who has the habit of urinating on cars driving beneath a local underpass. Oh, and for fits and giggles, we meet a group of rowdy mullet-styled rednecks who get their kicks from wrestling kitchen chairs to the point of exhaustion.

Sound like fun? This is a messed-up movie about twisted people living in the aftermath of a tornado that has swepth through their little slice of heaven. Nothing runs together smoothly as scenes and storylines come and go without rhyme or reason. Even the David Lynch and Terrence Malick crowds out there will feel disoriented in about 90% of this film.

A word of caution: if you begin to watch Gummo, you will have trouble turning away. I would liken it to a drug addiction that you know will harm you in some if you keep using it, but you end up alleviating such a warning by telling yourself, "Hey, just a little more. Just a little bit mo...."

1 out of 5 stars time better spent elswhere.......2007-05-19

Here are some alternative suggestions to watching this movie:
1) spend the hour and a half in a forest preserve out house...
2) try making your own crystal meth and then doing it
3) eat some spoiled chicken, get sick, puke and then role around in it.
4) piss in your pants and don't change your clothes
Doing one or all of the above is a far better experience than sitting through this piece of vile trash.

1 out of 5 stars I like cats........2007-05-19

I hated this trash. I'm so glad I saw it on IFC and didn't pay for rental. I can't ask for my money back. I do want that hour and a half back though. That so called writer/director(?) should go away.

3 out of 5 stars SMALL TOWN AMERICA FREAK SHOW........2007-05-19

This film eloquently shows what the rest of the world have always known, that small town America is full of inbred Morons, come to think of it, midwest citiiesof full of these morons as well.

3 out of 5 stars Objective review--GUMMO.......2007-05-14

So I tend to look at things in terms of nuetrality. This movie is freakin wierd, but incredibly artistic, take from it what you will. Its touching in its entirity as it lends insight into the shattered lives of victims of a devistating tornado in the unrecovering town of Xenia, OH. This is skewed by sensless acts of animal cruelty and odd behavior by residents which is obviously apparent in their off color choice of spare time activities. The movie ends abruptly leaving questions unanswered but more importantly a sense of sympathy for those in similar circumstances. It offers a startling depiction of a life very different than most, and a state of living not easily fathomed by most. This is very much a make-you-think kind of movie, especially in relation to the nature of human condition itself. Its a movie worth seeing for perspective if nothing else. It will be what you make of it....

4 out of 5 stars Fun portrayal of grunge era culture.......2007-04-11

A must see for any fan of Jared Leto or Jake Gyllenhaal. A film about two friends escaping from Las Vegas for Seattle after Jack (Leto) is caught in bed with the wife of a Vegas thug. Unexpectedly enough, Jeremy Piven steals the show as crazy drug dealing acquaintance of the two friends. Although the story is not overly superb, the acting is, and the movie is highly entertaining.

3 out of 5 stars Huh?.......2006-11-22

Sex, drugs and rock and roll, yep that about sums it up. One reviewer questioned the "purpose" of the aligator boy. I think it was to show Pilot's compassion. Pilot pretended to be going on the road with this friend to help him escape thugs who were after him for sleeping with their boss's wife, but he was really trying to track down a fellow classmate from high school for whom he had an unrequieted love. When he finds her, he realizes she's more messed up than he is(and that's really messed up), and she has no idea who he is. Sorta makes him realize the value of the girlfriend he left. The only thing good I can say about the movie is the acting. Jake Gyllenhaal and Jared Leto are really great.

4 out of 5 stars HIGHWAY.......2006-11-10

I am a big fan of actor/musician Jared Leto, and I found this flick kinda by accident. It had a little bit of everything, cast wise so I snagged it.
It took me about three weeks to finally check it out cause once I read the back for plot points I thought maybe it was a mistake. Wow was I wrong. I thought this movie was pretty damn good. The two main characters compliment eachother nicely and it's a classic story underlining what friendship/life can throw at you. Yes theres also an underlining message screaming..."This is what can happen if you do drugs/sleep with someone elses wife..." Overall its a good flick pick if you've still got a sense of humor about young love, consequence, sex , drugs and rock n ROLL!!!

5 out of 5 stars All in good fun.......2006-05-29

Why on earth am I giving this movie five stars? Its plot is minimal. The script has words and phrases I've never heard, and I'm not sure were ever really used in the real world. And to top that off, it's more than a little unbelievable.

However, despite all of the possible downsides, I really enjoyed it. Honestly, I'm normally not into these kinds of films, but it was just good fun. The humor wasn't disgusting and gross. The chemistry between the actors made the on screen relationships believable (even if I don't ever buy the whole love at first sight scenario), and there wasn't some great moral constantly being shoved down my throat.

All in all, it was just a fun movie to watch, and it's been a long time since a movie simply put a smile on my face.

4 out of 5 stars State Of Mind, Kids.......2005-11-14

This is what I call a "state of mind" movie because it's not a movie that has to make sense to be enjoyed. It's about some people doing some stuff that happens to be funny. And while that may sound stupid it makes for an entertaining movie because well, state of mind!! Think what the characters might be thinking to do what they do and say.

"Desmond the Alligator Boy is a major happener", who the heck can say something like that? Well, Pilot!

I'm anti drugs so this movie assures me that using drugs is senseless and I don't need to have that in my life in order to be happy. But Pilot (Jake Gyllenhaal) is high a lot so what he does/thinks/says is influenced by 'the influence'. *wink*

More importantly, movies like this make me miss my friends if they're not around. And if they ARE around you'll laugh at the movie's jokes and start remembering your own inside jokes and your own stories because it is what it's all about.

If you videotaped at least 72 hours of your life with your friends it would look a lot like "Highway" sans the drugs (or maybe with, lol).

And if all else fails, it's just a movie.

Wes Craven's 1984 horror film is a better movie than it is generally credited for being. Forget the tawdry sequels; this highly original, almost surrealist work stars Robert Englund as a mutilated monster who kills teenagers during their dreams. Craven, who only directed one Elm Street sequel (Wes Craven's New Nightmare), takes the Hitchcockian step of layering in psychological explanations for the terror and then proving them all irrelevant in the face of mindless evil. The horror in the film is emotionally raw, in contrast to the overimaginative set pieces of most of the sequels that followed; and the final scene is as deeply unsettling as anything Luis Buñuel ever committed to film. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars The behind the scenes info is well worth the price.......2007-06-07

I won't go too in depth into the story. If you don't know who Freddy Krueger is then you've been out of the pop cultural loop for well over two decades. What I will say is this DVD gives a great deal of info behind one of the classic slashers of the 1980s. Finally seeing the two alternate endings as well as listening to Wes Craven's commentary on his best movie helped to deepen the respect I have for this masterpiece, and yes, this is an excellent film.

5 out of 5 stars Truly one of the best.......2007-05-31

Freddy's debut. This film has it all, scares, gore, blood, thrills, and Freddy in his best scariest movie. This is a Nightmare On Elm Street, pleasent dreams.

5 out of 5 stars Whatever you do: Don't fall asleep!.......2007-04-05

You won't fall asleep during or after you watch these movies.
A revolutionary series of movies that every movie buff should own.

Freddy Kruger is the worst monster that you will ever run into in your dreams. Trust me when I tell you: if you haven't seen these movies you will be frightened for a long time after. Drink lots of coffee ...and what ever you do ...don't fall asleep!

3 out of 5 stars great movie but infifilm dvd version sucks.......2007-03-10

the infifilm version sucks (2 disc dvd) it paused alot while the other one disc version worked!

3 out of 5 stars Nostalgic for Generation-X . . . But Lost on Youngsters . . ........2007-02-05

I dig this film . . . BUT . . .

If you can imagine, only four of my twenty-six film-students have seen this work: and this is an advanced horror-film class!! So if you think this is a slasher-staple . . . apparently not with "Generation Y."

I was pretty excited to screen the film. But my students' luke-warm reception of Craven's work was pretty infectious (horror tends to be a communal experience like that!) Their boredom became my boredom...and though the jokes fell-flat with them, they did find the admittedly shaky acting to be humorous. In retrospect, I suppose Freddy works better as the "caricature" he has become than the half-baked (pun-intended) monster from the 1984 original. (I think the horror-enthusiast side of me loves Freddy best in 1987's "A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors" while the scholarly side loves the postmodern Freddy in 1994's "A New Nightmare" . . . yes, I realize I am being very Kellogg's "Frosted Shredded Wheats"!)

Many people post about the "killings" being spectacular. This is not entirely true. The first death is awesome -- no doubt! But Depp's death is beyond uneventful -- it is as though Craven drained his reservoir of ideas and decided that Depp's bed should consume him - it's pretty unforgivable as horror, but at least it's funny.

What is valuable about this film is that we have a "Final Girl" (see Carol Clover's "Men, Women and Chain Saws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film") that not only fights for survival but plots the death of the film's monster. Nancy becomes fearless . . . and a master-tactician. This progressive thinking is pretty impressive if we consider the conservative Reagan-years (1981-1989).

While Craven has developed his craft and produced more technically sophisticated films like "Scream" and "Red-Eye" (note that I did not say 'better"), "Nightmare on Elm Street" was a HUGE phenomenon in its time (and I think that says something about its horror legacy).

So though this isn't comparable to "serious" slasher-films like Carpenter's "Halloween" or Hooper's "Chainsaw," (but, seriously, was it ever trying to be?!) it is critical to the genre. So, prepare to be underwhelmed by the special-effects (if you are young and somewhat impatient) . . . but, like I tell my students . . . watch it so you can understand the genre as a whole:)
