This film represents Hugh Grant's first big bid at Hollywood stardom, on the heels of the success of Four Weddings and a Funeral. But he stumbled twice: first with this mundane comedy, then by being arrested after soliciting a prostitute near downtown Hollywood, the week before the film opened. Directed by Chris Columbus (Mrs. Doubtfire), Nine Months was a weak reworking of a French film about an aging bachelor (Grant) who can't decide whether to commit to the woman he loves (Julianne Moore). When she becomes pregnant, he still can't make up his mind and winds up blowing hot and cold on the subject of fatherhood, which causes tension in the relationship. There's a lot of low comedy involving Grant's best friend; Tom Arnold plays this ultra-married and child-ridden suburbanite, who makes fatherhood look like a living hell. Robin Williams has a funny cameo as a foreign doctor, but in the end, the sentiment is ladled on and Grant doesn't have nearly enough funny material to work with. --Marshall Fine
Description
Sam (Hugh Grant) has it all - a wonderful girlfriend, a successful child psychology practice and a red Porsche. But he's faced with having something he never wanted when he learns his girlfriend (Julianne Moore) is expecting. The news sends the unflappable psychologist into a panic. Torn between advise given by a well-meaning but over-bearing couple, (Tom Arnold and Joan Cusack), and by his confirmed bachelor buddy (Jeff Goldblum), Sam's in serious danger of losing his mind and his girlfriend. He's got just nine months - give or take a week, according to their crazy Russian gynecologist (Robin Williams) - to grow up!

Nine Months.......2006-11-13
We were really happy to find this film, we had this same film and loaned it out and it was damaged. So when we found it on Amazon we were real happy. The movies in great shape and we got it quickly so thanks a lot.
When propaganda goes awry.......2006-11-04
I have to hope that this movie's makers really had good intentions, because that's the only thing that would save this movie. Perhaps, all they wanted was to create a funny light comedy that would show, without too much stress, one man's conversion from bachelorhood to parenthood (bypassing the marriage stage, for the most part) with they-lived-happily-ever-after finale.
What they ended up making is a pitiful, painful set of recycled stereotypes of manhood and womanhood; a story from the land where men are infintile, women long-suffering and sacrificial, and child psychologists can't cure themselves. Suffice to say that Julianne Moore's character has to bear her child almost to birth to be proposed to by the child's father. Apparently, while she was an inactive baby machine she didn't deserve such honor. In his good turn, Hugh Grant's character (the child's father) only feels the warm glow of fatherhood when he's told that the baby is a boy. You should see his face change from harried to beautified when the doctor delivers the news.
Whatever you do, don't let your kids watch this until they're out of college and can think for themselves.
Hilarious, "It's the bloodly three percent".......2006-10-14
I've watched this movie many times since I've been ill, and I know it kept me from going nuts. I laughed out loud from one minute into the movie when Tom starts giving mouth to mouth to Samuel until the very end. My son had to come and check on me to see if I was OK since I was ill. There was never a dull moment. It's exactly how a lot of single guys would act when told there about to become a dad. Especially when their life is just perfect! I adore Hugh Grant, and I thougt the entire cast was terrific and superbly cast. The SUV scenes were truly great and well directed, as were all the others. Hugh brought tears to my eyes at the end of the movie when he picked up the baby and danced to "These Are The Days". Hugh you would make a great dad, and you certainly knew how to hold this baby, maybe YOU need to see the movie again. In my opinion it's right up there with "FWAAF" and "About a Boy" great movies.
Mildly funny but highly irresponsible.......2006-08-01
This movie, often identified as a must-view DVD for expectant parents, certainly has its share of laughs. While the movie sometimes verges on a slapstick feel, the situations encountered by Hugh Grant and Tom Arnold provide enough humor to make the movie a workable comedy.
Why, then, a two-star rating? The answer lies with the film's perpetuation of common misconceptions about cats, pregnancy, and babies. In this movie, the father-to-be has a pet cat. Unfortunately, the expectant mother is the victim of out-of-date information suggesting that cats spread parasites and threaten babies. While it is certainly true that pregnant women should avoid cleaning the litterbox and that no infant should be left unattended with any pet, there is no credible evidence to suggest that cats and babies cannot live under the same roof.
The film does seem to redeem itself briefly when a jilted Hugh Grant is shown holding the cat during a party. The brief promise of redemption vanishes quickly when the cat is literally tossed aside by another character. After that point, the cat and its fate are never mentioned again, allowing the viewer to draw the least favorable conclusion.
Ironically, a book shown during the movie, "What to Expect When You're Expecting," reinforces the conclusion that cats and pregnancy are not mutually exclusive. It appears, however, that the makers of this film never actually read the book or absorbed its wisdom.
Of course, some viewers will be tempted to say that this is only a movie and that this reviewer should "lighten up," but movies have a surprising way of legimitizing behavior. While it is highly unlikely that someone would decide to abandon a cat based solely on this movie, it is possible that "Nine Months" could sway someone who is already contemplating abandonment and looking for affirmation that such behavior is acceptable. That possibility is enough to undermine a movie that would otherwise be an inoffensive and enjoyable comedy.
Nine Months to Change Your Life.......2006-04-25
Hugh Grant is Samuel, a child psychologist whose patients have turned him off parenthood. When his long-time girlfriend Julianne Moore, has a surprise pregnancy, Sam has to tackle the prospect of having a kid of his own. The perils of sudden responsibility break up the parents-to-be with lots of comedic romantic antics to bring them back before the due date. An early Hugh Grant film in the US and a pre-superstardom Moore have a chemistry all their own.

The Truth About Cats and Dogs: One of the most memorably offbeat romantic comedies of the 1990s begins when a talk-radio veterinarian named Abby (Janeane Garofalo) takes a call from Brian (Ben Chaplin), the owner of a roller-skating Great Dane. Brian is intrigued by Abby's voice and asks if she'll agree to meet him. Insecure about her looks and her nonexistent love life, Abby agrees, but describes herself as a tall blonde, then begs her attractive neighbor Noelle (played by Uma Thurman) to meet with Brian in her place. The ensuing case of switched identity is complicated when Noelle takes a liking to Brian who, of course, thinks she is Abby. This confusion gains comedic momentum when Abby safely plays herself on the radio and in a long, hilariously seductive phone call with Brian, but by now the situation has grown hopelessly complex, and Abby has to find a way to reveal herself without disappointing Brian. Many viewers rightly complained that the movie relies on the assumption that Abby is unattractive, even though Garofalo is more attractive and appealing here than she'd been in several movies before and since. Still, this contemporary variation on Cyrano de Bergerac is a lightweight, good-natured surprise that values the quirks and foibles that make lovelorn romantics (including their pets) uniquely appealing. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
Oh Baby!.......2006-09-09
This review refers to "Nine Months"(DVD-PAL Region2)
Looking for a good time but don't want to leave your couch? Here's the answer for you..."Nine Months". Directed by Chris Columbus(Home Alone), starring Hugh Grant, Julianne Moore,Robin Williams, Tom Arnold, Joan Cusak and Jeff Goldblum. These are names that really know how to entertain and will have you laughing out loud the entire length of the film."Nine Months" is a hysterical look at the fears, joys and anticipation of becoming a parent and the waiting period that goes along with it.
Samuel and Rebecca have a relationship to be envied. Samuel is a successful child psychiatrist, the beautiful Rebecca is a graceful dance instructor. They have a really cool apartment and car, and five years of UNwedded bliss...don't fix it if it ain't broken...right? Well they are in for a big change in their lives. When Rebecca utters those wonderful words..."Samuel...I'm pregnant", the very cool and level headed Samuel practically kills them when he runs the car off the road. And so the fun begins. He discovers he has some growing up to do and it's easier said then done.
Included in the fun are their new "friends", Marty and Gail Dwyer, a very pushy but well meaning couple, played by Tom Arnold and Joan Cusak. They are old pros at the pregnancy game, as they are working on their fourth. Arnold's one liners are non stop and delivered with his usual brand of boisterous humor, and you never knew how funny delivering a baby could be until you have seen Cusak's brilliantly comical turn in the labor room. Jeff Goldblum, is Samuel's single friend, his link to his youth, and turns in a great performance. Then, of course there's the obstetrician. Who else can make having a baby such a riotous romp other than Robin Williams. He's just absolutely zany as the Russian Dr. Kosevitch, about to attempt his first delivery, human delivery that is!
So prepare to laugh out loud as Samuel and Marty go fist to cuffs with "Arnie the Dinosaur",Dr. Kosevich butchers the English language, it's Murphy's Law on the way to the hospital, and Rebecca and Gail make impending motherhood a delight for all.
You can't go wrong with this film. Even the soundtrack including "The Time of Your Life" and scoring by Hans Zimmer is perfect for this film. This PAL DVD is for DVD players compatible with Region 2. That would be mostly for viewers in Japan, Europe, South Africa, and the Middle East, including Egypt. But many of the newer DVD players sold in the U.S. are compatible with all regions. Check your DVD player manual and best prices. The region 1 edition (U.S., U.S. Territories, Canada, and Bermuda) is also sold here. Check links to other formats on the product info page or enter B000059HAL into your search.
"Nine Months" is a great ride, and one you will want to go on again...have fun...Laurie
