Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential review
Jonathan Demme would later become one of America's premiere directors, with an Oscar for The Silence of the Lambs and numerous nominations to his credit, but it was this sublime 1980 comedy that put him on the Hollywood map. Esteemed critic Pauline Kael called it "an almost flawless act of sympathetic imagination," referring to the movie's semifictional treatment of the true story of Melvin Dummar (played to perfection by Paul LeMat), an average guy whose life was turned upside down when he was made beneficiary of a $156 million will allegedly signed by millionaire Howard Hughes. Demme and Oscar-winning screenwriter Bo Goldman do not concern themselves with the validity of Dummar's claim; they're more interested in showing how Melvin's life is transformed--not necessarily for the better--by the influx of sudden wealth. Melvin doesn't take easily to being rich, and in telling his story Melvin and Howard becomes a true American classic, guaranteed to stand the test of time and improve with age like John Ford's The Grapes of Wrath. It's also a rousing good comedy, largely due to Mary Steenburgen's Oscar-winning performance as Melvin's wife and the everyday integrity of Melvin as an admirably scrappy hero. With Jason Robards as the long-haired Hughes, whom Melvin had given a ride one cold desert night, never knowing that his simple act of kindness toward the hermit-like Hughes would eventually change his life. With its comical blend of fact and speculation, Melvin and Howard is a tribute to the little guy, celebrating the American dream and the average folks who struggle to make it real. --Jeff Shannon

Thanks (but no thanks) to Full Metal Jacket, the name of "Gomer Pyle" is associated with a demented, suicidal screw-up. That's not the Gomer (Jim Nabors) we know and love! Sure, our Gomer may be, in the mentoring words of his bellowing Sgt. Carter (Frank Sutton), a "lunkhead," "yo-yo," "knucklehead," and "meatball," who invariably "pulls some beauts." But his heart is always in the right place, as in the episode "PFC Gomer Pyle," in which the newly promoted Private First Class unwittingly cancels Carter's Hawaiian furlough thinking it is a request for a permanent transfer. Our Gomer is unfailingly honest. In "Gomer and the Phone Company," he is arrested for trying to put back ill-gotten money he received from a malfunctioning pay phone. And, our Gomer is forthright, as in "Gomer and the Beast," in which he stands up to a feared, abusive sergeant (guest star Michael Conrad) who takes his waitress girlfriend for granted.

Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C., a spinoff of The Andy Griffith Show, was one of the "surprise, surprise, surprise" hits of its day. In this second season (its first in color), it ranked second to Bonanza in the Nielsen ratings. That Nabors and Sutton were never even nominated for Emmys is a TV Land injustice. Nabors, especially, finds new music in what could have been a one-note bumpkin character (he even demonstrates his unexpected baritone singing voice in "Arrivederci, Gomer"). Providing expert support are Ted Bessell (That Girl) and Ronnie Schell (who demonstrates his standup comedy chops in "Duke Slater, Nightclub Comic") as Gomer's Marine buddies. Look sharp for two future M*A*S*H stars, Jamie Farr in "Gomer Pyle, P.O.W." and, in a couple of episodes, William Christopher. Making welcome visits from Mayberry are George Lindsay in the mistaken-identity episode, "A Visit from Cousin Goober," and Ron Howard in "Opie Joins the Marines," in which Carter bonds with the runaway Opie and, movingly, hints at a less than nurturing relationship with his own father. "The world has changed a lot since I was a kid," he remarks when Andy (Andy Griffith) arrives to retrieve his son, and puts a reassuring arm around the boy's shoulder. Television has changed, too, in the more than 40 years since these still funny episodes were first broadcast. Prime time could use another Gomer, with his boundless optimism, unwavering character and try, try again attitude. --Donald Liebenson

4 out of 5 stars Sutton Impact.......2007-07-02

Frank Sutton does it again...he upstages Jim Nabors at almost every turn! His hilarious facial expressions are reminiscent of Jackie Gleason's wide-eyed portrayal of "The Honeymooners"' Ralph Kramden. I watched the Oscar-winning 1955 film "Marty" recently, where Frank Sutton played one of Ernest Borgnine's buddies...Sutton looks exactly like he would on "Gomer Pyle USMC" - he didn't seem to age at all in the ten years between "Marty" and "Gomer" - watch 'em and see for yourself! He's great!

This second season of ol' Gome was the first to be in color - and, unlike the first color episodes of "The Andy Griffith Show," these Gomer shows are still as fresh and funny as the first season. And there are guest stars a-plenty: Jamie Farr, William Christopher, Ronny Howard, Andy Griffith, George "Goober" Lindsey, Ted Knight, Susan Oliver, Joyce Jameson, Jerome Cowan, Gigi Perreau, Michael Conrad, Tige Andrews, Brendon Boone, Dabbs Greer, Jackie Joseph and Jack "Jimmy Olsen" Larsen.

Also, many regular actors who guested on "The Andy Griffith Show" make appearances, like Parley Baer, Enid Markey, Maudie Prickett and Maggie "Charlene Darling" Petersen.

Roy Stuart makes his first appearance as Corporal Boyle, Allan Melvin debuts as Sergeant Hacker and, best of all, Barbara Stuart finally portrays Vince Carter's girlfriend, Bunny Wilson (wait'll you see her in those tight slacks! Hubba Hubba!).

The reason I gave this set four stars is ONLY because it doesn't have ANY special features as the first set did....NONE....but the stories, acting, color, crispness and direction are definitely five star-worthy. You'll have fun!

4 out of 5 stars Changes not bad so far..........2007-06-28

I was angered to read the small print on the box that advises that some music has been changed and episodes may be edited. Yikes. I suspected that the music changes would occur in restaurants, etc. when they have dance music going in the background. So far I am right. I hate they changed it, but the music isn't too bad. On the other hand, haven't seen any edits yet. Hope there aren't any. Why would a company go to all the trouble to remaster edited versions (and the episodes look fantastic by the way). Would have given 5 stars but because the b.g. live action music was changed, had to knock off a star. I'll post again if I spot any missing footage.

Golll-eeeee! The '60s' favorite TV country bumpkin, Gomer Pyle, won the hearts of viewers on The Andy Griffith Show, and spun off in to his own wildly popular series, Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.. As the eternally cheery and clueless Gomer, Jim Nabors gives a comic tour de force performance as a newbie Marine under the command of the short-tempered Sgt. Carter, played with demonic fervor by Frank Sutton. Are Pyle and Sgt. Carter bitter foes or comedic sidekicks? "Surprise, surprise, surprise"--the secret to their chemistry was that the actors and characters were both, inseparable and adorable in their signature ways. The scrapes Gomer gets into are fairly routine and never exactly threaten national security, but Nabors' guileless delivery makes viewers tune in for more; the belly laughs are real. The boxed set includes engaging audio commentary by Nabors, who clearly still holds a lot of affection for his hapless alter-ego, as well as all 30 first-season episodes, and the pilot, which actually aired on The Andy Griffith Show. Other gems from the archive treasure trove include appearances by Nabors on The Lucy Show, The David Frost Show, and Nabor's own variety show, which also showcased his accomplished singing. Shazam! --A.T. Hurley

Description

Gomer Pyle, a naive country boy, leaves his home in Mayberry, NC to join the U.S. Marine corps. His perpetual wide-eyed innocence frequently gets on the nerves of his tough, loudmouthed sergeant. A successful spin-off from THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Excellent, Excellent.......2007-07-04

Being 46 yrs old, I used to watch this show when I was 4 yrs old & up. I hadn't seen an episode even as a rerun since the early 70's and all I can say is that it wasn't a SURPRISE, SURPRISE, SURPRISE at all at how good this show still is! From the packaging to the picture and sound quality it has been great! My children ages six and four, my wife and I watched an average of 2 episodes a night until we had seen all 5 discs and there wasn't a flaw in any disc. THIS SHOW LIKE MANY SITCOMS FROM THAT ERA PROVES YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE DIRTY, NASTY OR VULGAR TO BE FUNNY! I am now going to order season 2. A must for families looking for wholesome family friendly entertainment!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent show from the days when TV was worth watching.......2007-05-25

Gomer Pyle, Andy Griffith, Gilligan's Island, Leave It To Beaver, Dobie Gillis, Abbott And Costello....these really take me back to the times when TV was fun to watch. I hope they eventually release even more classic shows on dvd (Dobie Gillis, The Life Of Riley, Blondie And Dagwood, etc). Even in these high-tech fast paced days of video-on-demand, supercomputers, and hybrid vehicles, I still enjoy watching those old shows and movies.

5 out of 5 stars Note To Andy Griffith Fans.......2007-04-29

Ok, if you're reading this you probably are already an Andy Griffith Show and Gomer Pyle fan, and so need no further convincing that this set is well worth buying. Just some notes of special things to watch out for:

1. "Gomer the M.P."-features Robert Emhardt, the "Man In A Hurry" from the TAGS episode of the same name.

2. One of the early shows of this season, "A Date With The Colonel's Daughter" features Karl Swenson, who played "Mr. McBeevee" in the TAGS episode of the same name. In this episode he plays COL Harper, and his daughter's name is Jane, played by Suzanne Benoit.

3. Later in this season, the episode "Gomer Dates A Movie Star" is something of a continuation of "A Date With The Colonel's Daughter", except in this episode the COL is played by Forrest Compton (who later became a semi-regular playing the COL) and his name has been changed from COL Harper to COL Gray. Suzanne Benoit is still on hand as the COL's daughter, and also featured in this episode is Ruta Lee, who TAGS fans will recognize as the "college kid" reporter from the TAGS episode "Andy On Trial".

4. "Old Man Carter"-features Alvy Moore (Hank Kimball from Green Acres).

5. The award for the most TAGS alumni in a single episode of Gomer Pyle goes to "Love Letters To The Sarge". Keep your eyes open for no less than four Andy Griffith characters: Jean Carson ("Daphne", the sultrier half of "the fun girls" who likes to sidle up to Andy and purr "Hello doll" in his ear), Jackie Joseph (the object of Ernest T. Bass's affection, his darling "Romeena" in the TAGS episode "My Fair Ernest T. Bass"), Mary Lansing (who appeared in numerous TAGS episodes over the year including the saleslady who sells Opie the stockings for Helen in "Opie Loves Helen" and also played Emmet's wife in the last season), and Charles Thompson (who played Asa, the hotel clerk, bank guard, night watchman in Weaver's dept store, etc. in numerous TAGS episodes).

6. But the most bizarre connection between this first season of Gomer Pyle and TAGS is the episode "The Case Of The Marine Bandit". This episode is something of a mirror image of the TAGS episode "Barney's First Car" in that in both episodes the old lady "bad guy" is played by Ellen Corby (as running a car chop shop on TAGS and using Marines to rob liquor stores on GP), and the nice little old lady who shows up in the epilogs of both episodes is also played by the same actress, Hallene Hill. Watch "Barney's First Car" and then watch "The Case Of The Marine Bandit" and you'll see what I mean, it's interesting and makes you wonder how it could have happened by accident, or if the casting directors engineered it this way intentionally.

Long live The Andy Griffith Show and Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good Family Fun.......2007-04-22

After her long and wholesome run as America's Sweetheart, Doris Day quit movies with this well-scrubbed picture. With Six You Get Eggroll--oof, what a title--caught the wave of blended-family comedies, coming just after Yours, Mine and Ours and just before TV's The Brady Bunch. Doris has three sons, and new beau Brian Keith has an 18-year-old daughter (the still-baby-faced Barbara Hershey). It's family-friendly sitcom stuff, with both Day and Keith doing their comfortable, patented thing; when the two of them are onscreen together it's like watching a couple of old sweaters mate. This one is straight formula for fans only, although connoisseurs of camp will enjoy the whiff of Aquarius in the otherwise square proceedings (it was 1968, after all) when Doris goes to a nightclub where the Grass Roots are playing. There's also a hippie gang (featuring Jamie Farr and William Christopher, before M*A*S*H) with ponchos and love beads. The times they were a-changin', and kudos to Day for bowing out gracefully. --Robert Horton

Description

In WITH SIX YOU GET EGGROLL, Abby McClure, a widow with three sons, and Jake Iverson, a widower with a teen-age daughter, begin dating and eventually decide to get married. But they're not prepared for the hostile reactions from their children, who are not very excited about the new union between the two families.

5 out of 5 stars Fun movie to watch.......2007-06-08

I grew up in the 60's and 70's and especially love to watch old movies and shows from back then. This movie is so fun to watch when you can't find anything on tv to watch in evenings! I especially dislike what's on tv now....reality shows. So the other night I enjoyed this movie all over again.

5 out of 5 stars Great Family Movie.......2007-05-14

This is a great family movie. They don't make movies like this anymore. You can let your kids watch it without worrying about what might be in the movie that is inappropriate for children. This was one of my favorite movies to watch as a kid.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic movie!.......2007-05-13

This is simply a timeless classic - though many laughs with the hippie age of the late 60's and early 70's, a great movie with Doris Day, Brian Keith, Jackie Joseph, and other all-star talent. The frustrations of two widowers trying to blend a family, each with children of their own, is hilarious, as well as though-provoking. This is a great movie to have in your library to watch over and over again, as well as the book.

5 out of 5 stars Doris Day, you still got it!!.......2007-04-11

What a delightful comedy!! For the time, it really told the story of blending families, and telling of realistic events that occur!!!
Loved the ending and how it came about, made me feel like my family wasn't the only one with these issues!! Highly recommend to all!!

5 out of 5 stars Extended family comes together.......2007-04-06

Loved it. Fun look at an often difficult situation - melding two families into one. Amazing how a common cause can bring people together.

This is one movie musical that doesn't bother adapting its stage presentation for the big screen: Li'l Abner cheerfully uses brightly colored, patently fake backdrops and stage sets for its mythical setting. And why not? A movie musical based on a cartoon strip is about as far from reality as you can get. Al Capp's legendary comic about the hillbilly denizens of Dogpatch was brought to Broadway by the estimable comedy team Melvin Frank and Norman Panama, who also produced the movie. Along with sampling Capp's world (the pursuit of noncommittal Abner by Daisy Mae on Sadie Hawkins Day is a major plot device), the movie is a goofy record of 1950s attitudes and concerns--in fact, Dogpatch is threatened with destruction when the government wants to use it as an atomic test site. The actors' Broadway delivery has a deadening effect after a while, and some of the makeup is downright weird (think the Whos in the live-action Grinch). Gene de Paul's music is unmemorable, but Johnny Mercer's lyrics provide considerable fun, and the athletic dances are based on Michael Kidd's stage choreography. Plus, the movie honors Capp's eye for impossibly bodacious women by casting Julie Newmar as Stupefyin' Jones and Stella Stevens (her first movie role) as Appassionata Von Climax. --Robert Horton

Description

LI'L ABNER, the beloved cartoon strip from Al Capp, takes place in the hillbilly town of Dogpatch, which is deemed the most useless community in America. When the city is chosen as a test site for A-bombs, its colorful citizens take up the good fight, with lots of fun and merriment.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Must See for Li'l Abner Fans.......2007-05-03

This is great because it is so unpretentious-- a crowd pleasing musical farce based on Al Capp's popular comic strip. The gorgeous 50's pin-up style women are especially true to their source (and Julie Newmar really earns the name "Stupefyin' Jones"). Leslie Parish makes a luminous Daisy May, and Peter Palmer is the biggest, brawniest baritone Abner you could imagine. Mammy and Pappy are also great, but the weirdest impersonation has got to be Eagle-Eye Fleagle-- that guy moves like a cartoon! The plot is as kooky as one of Capp's Sunday half-page strips. Kind of corny but lively, with very athletic dancing by various hillbilly-clad young Broadway performers. The only flaw is its stagey-ness and flat lighting with multiple shadows on the studio floor. Still, with Gen. Bullmoose, Marryin' Sam (Stubby Kaye), Mooshine McSine, the Scraggs and a lot of plot convolutions, it is a very satisfying fable.

5 out of 5 stars excellent seller and product.......2007-02-13

Item as described and received in a timely manner... an excellent buying experience!

3 out of 5 stars Billie Hayes steals the show as Abner's Mom........2007-02-12

I'd heard of this show over the years and have been very curious to see what it was like. Fortunately, a friend gave me a copy as a gift, and I finally saw what Lil Abner is about. A very strange story about a secret formula that turns ordinary men into asexual musclemen is one of the stranger plot threads. I guess the word for it is camp. The scenery is very cartoony (which works well with the feel of this film), and the cast is full of terrific performers (Stubby Kaye is a brilliant performer as always), but the one that really blew me away is the very young Billie Hayes recreating her stage performance as Abner's elderly mother. According to my estimate, Hayes had not yet hit 30 when she played this character, and she is nothing short of wonderful. I couldn't help be think that Paul Henning based his Beverly Hillbillies television series on this film and stage musical, so many of the characters are echoed in that series. The character of Granny is so much like Billie Hayes' portrayal in this film, that I am surprised that Henning didn't just hire Hayes when he was casting his "Granny." The film is a bit slow in places, and the musical numbers are just not as good as in some other Broadway scores, but the movies is enjoyable and obviously not meant to be taken seriously.

5 out of 5 stars Andy Capp again.......2007-02-12

A musical version of the original. Very well done and funny! Some great stars and the sets are visual of the original cartoons!

5 out of 5 stars Great Family Movie .......2007-01-11

This movie is a favorite of our family. We love musical theatre and the songs are alot of fun. My children who were 8 and 11 yrs. old once watched this over and over on a 8 hour car trip.

"No one buys gorillas anymore," laments Mr. Peebles in the initial installment ("Big Game") of this Hanna-Barbera animation. The shop owner has looked after Magilla (Allan Melvin, The Brady Bunch) since he was a baby. Customers take the snappily-dressed simian home, he messes everything up--they bring him back. Looks like Peebles (actor/director Howard Morris, The Atom Ant Show) is stuck with the big lug. Granted, little Ogee (Jean Vander Pyl, The Flintstones), who makes her debut in the seventh episode ("Come Blow Your Dough"), would love a pet gorilla, but the redheaded tot is always short of cash.

Magilla first bounded onto the boob tube in 1964. Breaking from the usual pattern, the series premiered in syndication before moving to network TV two year later. Although the gorilla appears in the title cartoon of each episode, the other segments are dedicated to Ricochet Rabbit and Droop-a-long and Punkin' Puss and Mushmouse. Ricochet (Don Messick, Scooby-Doo) is "the fastest sheriff in the west," Droop-a-long coyote (Mel Blanc, Bugs Bunny) is his foot-dragging deputy, and Punkin' (Melvin) and Mushmouse (Morris) are a hillbilly Tom and Jerry, locked in a rambunctious Hatfield and McCoy-type feud.

This Classic Collection includes 23 episodes plus eight shorts. Throughout, the gorilla is drafted by the army ("Private Magilla"), cast in a movie ("Groovey Movie"), and abducted by aliens ("Planet Zero"). After moving to ABC, the secondary toons would eventually be replaced by Breezly and Sneezly and Peter Potamus and His Magic Flying Balloon, featuring much of the same voice talent. In both cases, the suspender-sporting primate was the top star of the show. As the theme song, introduced in episode 14 ("Motorcycle Magilla"), would have it, "A gorilla like Magilla is nice at any price!" --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Magilla Gorilla, is a loveable but clumsy gorilla, who lives in Mr. Peebles' Pet Shop. Mr Peebles repeatedly tries to sell or give away the gorilla with no success. Backing segments include Punkin' Puss & Mushmouse and Rocochet Rabbit & Droop-a-long Coyote. These 23 complete cartoons plus 8 bonus Magilla Gorilla classic Hanna Barbera cartoons are now available for the first time ever on DVD!

3 out of 5 stars Good Old Cartoons.......2007-06-27

I think the old cartoons are great and love showing them to my kids. I was particularly looking for Breezley and Sneezley (which I read was on these dvd's) and have yet to see one on there. So I am a bit disappointed. But if I was looking specifically for all the rest it is great.

5 out of 5 stars funny movie!.......2007-05-13

saw this movie one saturday morning on Comedy Central and it had me cracking up! i HAD to add it to my collection!

1 out of 5 stars Bored Me To Tears.......2006-01-31

I admit, I only watched half this movie. I couldn't take any more. The acting was campy and over-the-top (even for an 80's movie, this beat them all). The plot seemed silly and ridiculous. I didn't even really care that much for the characters in this movie enough to find out how everybody made out in the end, though I'm sure I can figure it out easily enough.

I might be missing something because everybody else on Amazon.com is raving about it. I just don't get it.

One thing I don't agree with was people's review of how this was a family film. I may not know what qualifies as a family film but with all the swearing and innuendo in the movie I wouldn't let my son watch it.

5 out of 5 stars a true family movie.......2005-03-29

This movie is a one-of-a-kind. Never again will you see this kind of inoccent comedy which is very funny. I remember seeing it when younger, and now my daughter has me seeing it 20 times a day. I still watch it each time and laugh. Mandel and lloyd are hilarious in this 80's film. Great for kids.My daughter is 3 and shes hooked on BOBO.....

5 out of 5 stars DON'T CHEAT YOURSELF BUY THIS AWESOME DVD - MOVIE, .......2005-03-24

This is a totally awesome movie not because of awesome special effects, not because it is particularly well written, not because it is at all believable because trust me it's not very realistic at all. The Walk Like A Man works because, it is extremely funny and it has an awesome message. I am very disabled and this movie shows why it is ok to be different. The movie shows how sometimes what people see as different is in many ways better than what most people call "normal". For all Walk Like A Man Lacks in traditional movie POP and FIZZ it makes up for in its message of heart. The movie is more slap stick comedy than serious. If you want a more serious Boy Raised by Wolves Tale I would suggest LUCAN.

This is a movie to watch if you still have the heart of child like innocence and you are feeling down and just wanting to feel good afterwards. This is not the movie for those who want something deep, meaningful and spiritual. Walk Like A Man is an hour or so of weird fun with an awesome message at the end. I brought a copy of Walk Like A Man from Amazon.COM on DVD and at 46 I still enjoy watching. OyVey who knows if I will ever grow up AND LOVING IT!

5 out of 5 stars TWO THUMBS UP!!.......2004-09-19

4 out of 5 stars Massive Dose of Martial Arts Mayhem.......2007-05-06

One of the better live action versions of a Japanese Manga out there. I mean, how can you hate a movie where the antagonist and protagonist are Caucasians with Asian names, and the female love interest is Asian with a Caucasian name?

1 out of 5 stars Dismally Bad Live-Action Version of Popular Japanese Manga Series.......2006-09-26

There was a brief period around 1995-7 when Toei, one of the major film companies in Japan, produced a string of now forgotten films featuring B-list English-speaking actor(s). Those films usually included Japanese actors as part of main cast or supports, and many of them were theatrically released in Japan (though none of them became a commercial hit). Today not many people know such titles as `No Way Back' (featuring then unknown Russell Crowe and Kelly Hu), `Countdown' (with Lori Petty'), `Final Vendetta' (with Brigitte Wilson) and `Crying Freeman' (directed by Christophe Gans). Except for `Crying Freeman' which is a decent action film, they are mostly unremarkable films.

`Fist of the North Star' was made during this period. The big difference is that its post-WWIII story derives from hugely popular Japanese manga series `Fist of the North Star' (`Hokuto no Ken'). Ask any Japanese under 40, and you will realize the popularity of the series. Well, not everyone liked it, but this comic created by Buronson and Tesuo Hara.became popular during the 1980s, and then TV animation version started, which also became a hit.

But this live-action version of `North Star' falls flat completely. It uses the earlier chapters of the original comic as the main story, in which we follow the battles of a stoic fighter named Kenshiro (Gary Daniels) in the bleak, post-apocalyptic world plagued with violence. Blood thirsty gangsters attack the villagers, and they steal and kill mercilessly. It is the world of the second `Mad Max' film (which greatly influenced the original comic), but unlike Mel Gibson's character Kenshiro (whose character is partly based on Bruce Lee) fights the villains with his original kung-fu, which causes the enemy's body explode (yes, literally, like `The `Scanners').

Unfortunately, however, it doesn't happen in this film because it is so CHEAP! The unimaginative production designs are mainly about mud, old factory, and wilderness with green screen behind it. Nothing is thrilling in here - you see hammy Clint Howard playing a despicable baddie with hammy Chris Penn playing another despicable baddie. Japanese actress Isako Washio plays bland Julia, Kenshiro's love, and it is not a good sign when you see Malcolm McDowell sitting like a Buddhist monk.

The story is sometimes hard to follow because of its confusing narrative, and it often goes on and on with talks, talks, and talks. Former kick-boxing champion Gary Daniels can show very good fight scenes, and he surely shows them briefly, but when that happens, the film is almost over.

My advice is again `Stick to the original' or in this case, original Japanese cartoon series. It is not perfect, but it is more exciting and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars gary daniels kick ass.......2006-09-13

this is gary daniels best performance so far, i havent seen or read the cartoon/comics, but this is a good entertainment movie. and the budget issnt that low. watch it, it is a must own

1 out of 5 stars fists will fly, and heads will NOT explode!!!.......2006-07-21

nobody explodes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! no one! i can't stress that enough. no one suffers the true wrath of the fist of the north star. if you are a fan of the animated series then don't watch this movie. it will only make you hate the person who made it. if you are a fan of martial arts movies, don't watch this movie because it will make you hate all of the actors in this movie. if you are a fan of mullets don't watch this movie because it will forever detract from the joy that courses through your veins everytime you see a remarkable quaff of hockey hair. if you are a fan of cheasy b movies then i also strongly suggest that you do not watch this one because it will make you hate yourself. this movie sucks on levels that you didn't even know existed. it sucks more than going on a blind date with with your mom. it sucks more than watching rosie o'donnell and liza minelli strip down and wrestle in creamed corn and chick peas. worse than a drunk near sighted proctologist with cold hands and long nails. it sucks more than pamela anderson having hep c. or like seeing your grandmother getting out of the shower. like sifting through dog poop looking for worms this movie will leave you feeling like you need a shower. is this movie better than a sharp stick in the eye? no, if somone stabbed you in the eye with any stick while you were watching this movie, then you would thank them for their mercy. save your sanity and do not, under any circumstances, watch this movie. gary daniels sucks and nobody explodes!

1 out of 5 stars Remake is defentaly needed badly!.......2005-08-27

I was excited when this came out in 1995 and saw it in Tokyo. This was my favorite Japanese comic at the time. Unfortunately, this was one of the worst adaptations I could have never imagined. Although there were a few good fight effects, it did not make up for the poor screenwriting and plot. I want to remake this film with a big actor, and all the characters needed. This could be like "Lord of the Rings: Trilogy". The comic is tight, and the story is deep. So please don't watch this film. Read the comic and then let your imagination soar!!!

3 out of 5 stars classic comedy.......2007-05-12

I love these two together in a comedy. The up and down relationship is very intertaining. I hadn't seen this one for over 30 years and it wasn't quite as funny as what I had remembered as a teen. I still definitely liked it and would recomend it to others.

3 out of 5 stars Rock and Gina: our ideal bedfellows.......2007-01-17

Matters of sexuality apart, Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida would make highly desirable bedfellows, beautiful as they were in the mid 1960's. Melvin Frank's comedy is only average, but it has some very funny moments. Gig Young and Terry-Thomas provide good support. Lollo, dressed by Jean Louis, is a sight to behold; not to mention that her gift for comedy manages to surface here and there.

2 out of 5 stars Not good.......2003-10-04

As a big fan of 60s comedies, I find this one seriously lacking. There's no chemistry between Rock and Gina, nothing likeable about their characters, and nothing compelling about the storyline. I do believe I laughed once during the movie however, but I can't remember why. Actually I only got this movie because it came packaged with Man's Favorite Sport, which actually IS a good and funny movie.

1 out of 5 stars Bad DVD of a Good Movie.......2003-09-04

Not genuine letterboxed. Portion of original picture missing. Read review under the orginal DVD two-pack release of Strange Bedfellows/Man's Favoite Sport.

4 out of 5 stars Gina and Rock or Rock and Gina?.......2000-04-26

This couple, Rock Hudson and Gina Lolibridgita is always fighting because she's different from him and has her own idea and stands for women's rights and then before you know they are made for each other but she also is involved with another man with hilarious results so be prepared to laugh. Find out who gets the girl by watching the movie.

4 out of 5 stars A Minor Classic Still Delivers The Riches Of Howard Hughes' Fortune.......2006-10-28

I recently picked up a copy of "Melvin and Howard," a picture that I remembered fondly from many years ago--to be pleasantly rewarded once again by its subtle, yet unmistakable charms. Even though this movie was warmly regarded upon it's release, it's not a film I would characterize as ever having been immensely popular. Despite being directed by Jonathan Demme, who went on to many great films including "Silence of the Lambs," and despite Oscars for Mary Steenburgen and its screenplay--it's a film I feel has been largely forgotten.

It's unfortunate, because I think "Melvin and Howard" is a terrific film based on a fascinating true life incident. It has a real indie sensibility about it, a smallness, an attention to slice-of-life drama, a richness in detail. Today, I really don't believe this would have been a studio film. For such a BIG story, this is a little (but rich) comedy.

Essentially, the plot follows the adventures of Melvin Dummar--a small town loser. Melvin claims to have once given a ride to billionaire Howard Hughes and upon Hughes' death claimed to have a will naming him heir to the Hughes' fortune. Of course, this becomes scrutinized and debated. Is the story true? Are the papers valid? And although these events are based on fact, the films plays out as a smart satire on the nature of greed and asks us to determine what qualities in life make us the richest.

Paul Le Mat, an interesting actor, has his best role here as Melvin. Jason Robards plays, very briefly, as the man who may or may not be Hughes (a few minutes was enough to garner him an Oscar nomination). And Mary Steenburgen is a riot as Melvin's first wife. She swept most of the major awards that year, hers is a deft comedic performance reminiscent of a young Jean Arthur. This is a MUST for her fans.

There's a lot of joy to be had in this small picture, and I definitely want to recommend it. It's a sophisticated telling, as well. It never purports to advance what is true or not--and that'll leave you with a smile and some good discussion points when the film ends. KGHarris, 10/06.

3 out of 5 stars Oddly-structured film, but still fascinating.......2006-09-02

I was a little disappointed by this one. The premise, execution, and cast are all top notch. But Bo Goldman's script is what threw me, despite all the acclaim. For me, too much happens too late. Act II dwells too much on Melvin-as-loser. Again and again we see him chase the American Dream. The trouble is, ten minutes into the film I could tell he would never get it. So after a while all the attempts became tedious.

When Melvin does find the "will," the movie is almost over, and very little screen time actually is spent dealing with how the discovery changes him. We get the expected deluge of reporters, crazies, and marriage proposals, but this part isn't developed and proceeds along pretty expected lines. Exploring this more--maybe it tears apart his relationships with his women, with his kids--would have made a richer film, I think, than watching endless breakups and get-togethers with his wife when he was poor. And I just didn't find his relationship with his flaky wife or his trailer-trash life to be that compelling. A second relationship (with a very young and very beautiful Pamela Reed) also didn't get developed as well as I'd hoped. Just when the film was getting up some steam...it ended.

The first half of Melvin and Howard is very enjoyable, however, with Demme's scrappy style complementing the material well. It's a small, quirky film with an unusual but very American premise (you could argue it embodies the true American Dream, the one we really don't talk much about); it's the type of film that rarely gets made anymore because Hollywood only has the machinery in place today to make $100 million dollar digital effects extravaganzas with all the soul of a computer game, since that is usually what they're marketed after. So it's more the pity that I can't get as excited about this very unique and very personal film as I wanted to.

The transfer to DVD is excellent. (I've read reviews elsewhere that said the transfer was from a very bad print. Perhaps they are reviews of an earlier DVD edition, because the one I saw looked flawless.) The anamorphic trailer is a hoot. Recommended for a nice rainy weekend, but not quite "essential."

4 out of 5 stars a fun movie that may just be true.......2006-02-14

for as long as this movie has been out it wasn't till just this past weekend that i watched it for the first time. what a treat! as a boy i grew up in willard, utah, and was familiar with who melvin dummar was long before the howard hughes will incident took place. so it was extra fun for me to watch the segment of the movie that was filmed at the actual gas station that dummar operated back in the 70s. my dad operated a fruit stand just down the highway from there for a bunch of years till the property owner decided to build a house on the property and we relocated the stand. the old gas station is still there today, though no longer in business, on the old highway 89 that passes through willard. but being from that area i did notice a couple of trivial errors. when the willard sequence begins it gives the impression that the body of water you see in the background is the great salt lake. it isn't. actually that is willard bay you can see. the salt lake is several miles beyond on the other side of a big rock dike built in the 60s. but that's okay, no big deal. the other descrepency was when melvin went to salt lake city to drop the will off at the lds church headquarters the movie referred to temple square as "mormon square". no harm done really and none of that detracted from my enjoyment. so if you'd like to spend a little time with a fun movie i highly recommend this one. sure, the hughes will was thrown out by the courts, but that doesn't mean it was a fake, just that with all that fortune at stake that there were those with a motive to discredit anything that came along. maybe melvin dummar was robbed by the system. who can say for sure. and as for melvin i am unsure what became of him as his family moved from willard after the movie was made and i myself have moved away as well, though my parents still live there and i visit from time to time.

5 out of 5 stars A hidden jeweled picture!.......2005-10-08

When the name of Jonathan Demme had not reached the stardom that years after would confer for him The Silence of the lambs, this movie surprised me kindly. Underneath this is a corrosive spoof of our society. A film that gives you much more you are usually to receive, so I recommend you to check it out again, because unfairly, it was overneglected in those ages due perhaps, of major fireworks films that you know but I won `t mention them, by reasons attained with the wise discretion.

I watched it again two weeks ago and definitively improves with the ages. Mary Steenbrugen deserved this Prize. And what else can it be said about the geniality and talent in excess of Jason Robards featuring Howard Hughes?

From any angle you want to examine this picture has not any fissure. Go for it.

3 out of 5 stars Oscar? Why!.......2005-10-05

This is an Okay dvd. It wouldn't be on my top 10. I really didn't see a great performance by Mary Steenburgen. I guess the strip segment was there to make sure you remembered her. I have to say I do and did. I haven't seen the "VHS" version so I'll just say the movie was okay.

Description

Macaulay Culkin (Richie Rich) is a clever kid out to reform his wayward father (Ted Danson, Three Men and a Baby, "Cheers") in this exuberantly zany, heartwarming comedy for the whole family. When he is dropped off at the home of Ray Gleason (Danson), the father he hasn't seen in years, Timmy (Culkin) hopes that they'll be able to spend some time together. Unfortunately, that's not what Dad has in mind. Involved in the get-rich-quick scheme of a lifetime, Ray and two klutzy cohorts are illegally paving the road to financial bliss...that is, until Timmy steps into their path. Recognizing that only he can set his father straight, this inventive kid creatively thwarts their plan and makes Ray do time...as a dad.

5 out of 5 stars Much Better Than The Earlier Reviews/4 or 5 Stars.......2007-06-11

Culkin fans should love this movie. The movie has a good message. Home Alone fans should not be disappointed. Danson is at his best in this film.

1 out of 5 stars This was an almost forgettable flick, but then I remembered .......2006-10-15

Saturday August 14th, 1994. I was still rather uncertain about the future. I had asked Jesus into my heart 2 days before watching this movie, and thought things would be a breeze. Don't hold your breath Dan. It got even more confusing as I was trying to get with one of 2 girls at this time. One was the daughter of the woman who planted the seed for me to come to Jesus, and another one was a baby Christian who was in love with someone else. Well I went out with the girl of the woman, and I made so many mistakes that night. For starters I didn't know how to do a date properly. I made her pay for her ticket, and then she brought her cousin along, so I couldn't consider this to be a proper date anyway. It was a movie I really wasn't all that up to seeing anyway after Caulkin did "The Good Son", and the forgettable "Nutcracker" I felt his talent was spent as far as the movies would go. This had Danson as a Sam Malone wannabe. Apparently things didn't go too well with Whoopie, and he would try to get back into the groove rather quickly with doing another shallow character who was only concerned about himself. Well this was supposed to be a comedy, but it was far too serious. They would also use the Countors "Do You Love Me" for the umpteeenth millionth time, and what seemed like it was supposed to be a simple cute movie turned out into being a long-drawn out night not only for the movie, but also me. I learned alot that night, and it was stored away until now. Here are the lessons I want to pass onto you:

For those about to date I salute you.

1. Pay for you and your date. If your date brings someone along for protection use discretion, and know your budget you may be able to pay for them too which could, and I emphasize "COULD" get you some brownine points with the girl.

2. There's no such thing as "Dutch" unless you 2 get serious and steady.

3. Go with what your heart tells you. Don't be confused with what anyone tries to tell you. I know that morning that the woman was trying to say "Back Off", and if she doesn't respond it wasn't meant to be. I know that it's a risk, and believe me I feel that if I wasn't desparate I wouldn't have bothered with her too much after the first couple of times when she say "Call Me", but she'd not be home, and I would not hear from her again. However, begin to learn about discernment through books on dating, and from your peers.

4. Give it up for getting that all important "First Kiss" It won't happen unless you do everything immaculate. Don't even think of getting her pants off either. Movies lie to you about that. If you tried, and this is coming from a man who gets frustrated quick Don't go away mad.

5. Be sure to take care of yourself. I mean the car I drove was an eyesore, and because I didn't know how to take care of those things the girl actually took the dented part off because she was experienced with that; how humiliating. If you don't know how to do car repair you can learn online, or have a friend help you learn. Also...well this is one thing I did know about, and that was Come to your date reasonably clean.

6. Of course thank the girl for going out with you.

These are just 6 of the lessons I learned that night, and the movie well I almost forgot about it until recently. I just feel it's a long, drawn-out flick that was top heavy on the serious side of comedy. It was probably worthy of at least 2 razzies.

3 out of 5 stars Wait a minute-I'm confused [...].......2005-09-17

I have mixed feelings on this movie. Is the Culkin kid dude or woman? Its like he's both genders. I wonder if Ted Danson knows? I mean i know he's a dude in home alone and saved but then there's this and party monster and i think "Is this Shlong, i'm watching or is this thing, this creature a Chic?
Does anyone know? What happened to becker? Has anyone ever seen this movie? I guess not.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Movie With Macaulay Culkin!!!.......2004-07-17

When first saw this movie on Abc Familey I knew I was going to like it.This movie also has Ted Danson it.It's about Father & Son Relationship.Macaulay Culkin looks older in this movie than the others he did like Both Home,Uncle Buck & My Girl.He was propbably 13 at that time he made that movie.I loe this movie,I gotta get this movie!!!!

2 out of 5 stars more respect-less profanity.......2003-12-27

I'm sorry to say that this movie was ruined by today's standard of decency. Its bad enough we can't protect our kids from the world but we really should be able to put in a pg movie and get good laughs not profanity and a complete lack of respect for the Lords house of worship. I was totally appauled with the actions in the church as if using the Lords name in vain was'nt enough. What happened to pg being 1 or 2 bad words and that was it. Todays standards are totally wrong. Years ago that would have been rated R. It would have been a terrific movie but they feel if there isn't a lot of cussing and bad manners no one will enjoy it, well they're dead wrong. Let's clean up the act for our future generation, after all what we put into the future is what we're going to get back. Feed kids garbage and what do you think they will produce?
