I Don't See A Connection Here.......2007-04-14
First of all, what does being "Goth" have to do with Stevie Nicks??? These are two totally different worlds as far as I'm concerned. I've been a Nicks fan since 1977 and have never even heard of any Goth having any interest in Ms. Nicks or her music. Furthermore, the acting is just that - acting. The dialog is tiresome and repetitive. The film feels sluggish and dragged out. I was particulary bored with the sex scenes - way too much time spent on them; and the plot gets lost way back at the beginning of the film.
And as for Karen Black, she must have really needed the cash, because she really stunk in this movie.
A very disappointing film, for me anyway. If you are over the age of 35, I would definitely NOT recommend this movie; it has "alternative" written all over it.
Like a hidden camera watching the lives of real people..........2006-10-03
As a big and beautiful misfit, I loved this movie. The acting was very "real", especially the scenes showing the relationship between Gypsy and Clive. I really got the feeling that they were soulmates, in the platonic sense of course. So many movies today have a stilted feel to the acting, but Gypsy 83 feels real, I could actually imagine this whole movie happening to someone in the real world like me. I especially like the scene in the NY club with the catty gay goth guys. Just goes to show that even the "non-conformists" are not immune to being clique-ish and exclusive.
An excellent film for the right people- But the US release has problems.......2006-09-13
I won't review the merits of the plot or acting, or the film itself. Instead, I wish to address this DVD. Aside from being non-anamorphic, there's another glaring problem with this presentation of this excellent film: The distributor is ripping off the producers and director. Check out the movie's website for details, but basically, the distributor gave the filmmaker a bad deal, and has been the only one to profit from this DVD release.
My suggestion? Buy the upcoming UK version and find a way to play it in region 1. It is frowned upon, but I'd rather see the people who made the movie get the profits, rather than a distributor with questionable ethics.
I don't condone piracy, but filmmakers sometimes have to be protected from the industry instead of the consumers!
If this sounds interesting to you you'll probably like it.......2006-05-19
I give this four stars mostly because three starts tends to look like I didn't like it. I did, but it's a small film in focus and, like so many independent films, it doesn't wrap everything up into a neat package for public consumption.
It's probably either going to be your thing or not. I'm not sure it'll convince people not interested in issues of youthful identity - sexual and otherwise. In some ways it's a road movie with all the familiar sort of encounters along the way, but it can be surprising in how things turn out, in how it's not overly sentimental or neat by the conclusion. I do think both the main actors are very good. Sara Rue is a full-bodied beauty - very unusual in film, but important. And Kett Turton could certainly be a star of indie films in the future.
I encourage you to watch this if the descriptions sounds of interest.
Forever Gypsy.......2006-03-10
If you are a lover of the late mid 80's early 90's then this a must see. It captures that era completely. So much of it was like a flashback in time for me. The characters are wonderful. The plot is ok, not all together there at times but still the relationships and dynamics of the characters are enough to over ride the small things.
The soundtrack is awesome as well. I loved the scenes in Clive's room especially for his musical taste.
