Grease
Riding the strange '50s nostalgia wave that swept through America during the late 1970s (caused by TV shows like Happy Days and films like American Graffiti), Grease became not only the word in 1978, but also a box-office smash and a cultural phenomenon. Twenty years later, this entertaining film adaptation of the Broadway musical received another successful theatrical release, which included visual remastering and a shiny new Dolby soundtrack. In this 2002 DVD release, Grease lovers can also now see it in the correct 2:35 to 1 Panavision aspect ratio, and see retrospective interviews with cast members and director Randal Kleiser. All these stylistic touches are essential to the film's success. Without the vibrant colors, unforgettably campy and catchy tunes (like "Greased Lightning," "Summer Nights," and "You're the One That I Want"), and fabulously choreographed, widescreen musical numbers, the film would have to rely on a silly, cliché-filled plot that we've seen hundreds of times. As it is, the episodic story about the romantic dilemmas experienced by a group of graduating high school seniors remains fresh, fun, and incredibly imaginative.

The young, animated cast also deserves a lot of credit, bringing chemistry and energy to otherwise bland material. John Travolta, straight from his success in Saturday Night Fever, knows his sexual star power and struts, swaggers, sings, and dances appropriately, while Olivia Newton-John's portrayal of virgin innocence is the only decent acting she's ever done. And then there's Stockard Channing, spouting sexual double-entendres as Rizzo, the bitchy, raunchy leader of the Pink Ladies, who steals the film from both of its stars. Ignore the sequel at all costs. --Dave McCoy

Grease 2
Too often, sequels to popular films simply rehash the original film; call it the carbon-copy syndrome. Grease 2 suffers from no such malady, having almost nothing to do with the original film. Sure, it focuses on teens at Rydell High, the imaginary school from the first film, which starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. But other than a few of the teachers, all of the characters are new and so are the songs--and more's the pity. By the time Grease hit the big screen, it already had had almost a decade as a theatrical musical, more than enough time to hone its mock-rock & roll score. But this sequel, which stars among others a then-unknown Michelle Pfeiffer, Maxwell Caulfield, and Lorna Luft (Judy Garland's daughter), has music that's neither fish nor fowl, neither rock nor Broadway. Meanwhile, the plot is a reversal of the first film, in which a cool guy fell for a square girl. In this one, the square is newcomer Caulfield, who catches the eye of tough girl Pfeiffer and her Pink Lady gang. The appearance of such pseudo-stars of the '50s, like Tab Hunter, is supposed to lend a nostalgic kick, but let's just say that Grease 2 slides almost instantly into obscurity. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars We Go Together 2 DVD-Pack (Grease/Grease 2 ).......2007-05-26

I already have the United Kingdom DVD's of Grease and Grease 2 but when I saw them as a two-pack I thought I must get them as Grease is a different version than the UK one.

Grease is one of my favourite musical films ever which was released in 1978. I love Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta and the love story storyline and of course the fantastic soundtrack including Summer Nights, You're The One That I Want, Sandy and Greased Lightnin'. It brings back so many fantastic memories of my childhood as I was only [...]at the time.

Grease 2 was released in 1982 and all though it is not up to the standard of the Grease storyline it is a great movie in it's own right and didn't get the recognition it deserved. Maxwell Caulfield, Michelle Pfeiffer and Adrian Zmed star in this very funny love story. It has a great soundtrack with songs such as Reproduction and We'll Be Together.

If you like musical films then Grease and Grease 2 are the ones you should have in your DVD collection. Also the soundtracks to Grease and Grease 2 are a must have for your CD collection to.

3 out of 5 stars Double-Edged Review..........2007-04-10

"Grease" is a classic and great movie. It will get a 5-star rating. "Grease 2" should never have been made! It deserves no stars at all! What were they thinking??? Certain movies will never merit a sequel - "Grease" is one of those movies.
You'd be better off just buying the original.

Do you find it natural for a purple Character called Tinky-Winky to be a man? The name alone should alarm you. It is also unnatural for a character to have a man's voice, yet carry a pocket book. (They call it a magic bag, but it looks exactly like a pocketbook). If you want your children to be confused about the line between girls and boys, go ahead and buy it. I think i will buy veggie tales or something else.

this review is written for geeks like me who enjoy looking up reviews for barney and stuff just because they can. tele tubbys give me scarey dreams. i don't like them. they give babies nightmares too. the teletubbys live in a hostile world overrun by rabbits. the world is hostile because everything is so nicey-nicey nothing kills off the rabbits, and the little vermins overtake the planet. the planet is really hot and dry, too beacause the baby sun is so close to the planet it fries everything. the tubbys still manage to survive there because their tubby custard is cursed and makes them immortal. they also have a machine of ultimate destruction that they affectionately call "noo noo", but little do they know, it will betray them.(that's in another episode) in conclusion, if your childs starts crying, screaming, or showing any signs of discomfort, they are scared of the teletubbies and will have bad dreams until they are under the tubby spell. if they enjoy the program, their minds are now controlled by the tubbys. if they seem bored with the program, they are safe, but will soon suffer the fate i explained in the sentence before this sentence, so get them away from that television. i hope you change your mind about allowing the evil forces of the teletubbies(e.f.o.t.t.) to invade your home. best wishes from-

5 out of 5 stars Tubbies are so entertaining for parents & kids.......2007-02-09

The Tubbies DVDs are a bit different from the episodes that air on TV. The TV shows are always a half-hour and they follow a predictable pattern. The DVDs have the familiar beginning and ending, but in between they show several clips from various episodes and they don't follow the same pattern. While it's not possible to buy your favorite Tubbies episodes on DVD (as far as I know), the DVDs will have clips from some of your favorite episodes.

I've seen a lot of the episodes and a few of the DVDs, and most of them over and over and over again. It's always fun to watch them with my daughter because she really enjoys them.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT DVD!!!!.......2007-01-05

I bought this dvd for my little boy for his second birthday. He Loves it!!! He watches it everyday before his nap. I recommend this dvd for all Teletubbie fans.

    4 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......2006-08-08

I'm not certain what is taking so long to get all the Teletubbies episodes released on DVD, but this is a welcome edition. I have more fun watching it than my two boys, ages five months and twenty-seven months, do. Most adults I know find it annoying, but I appreciate the bizarre, trippy attributes. The baby in the sun is fantastic, as are Po's little ditties and the naughty Noo-Noo. Aside from adults like myself, this is probably best for children zero to eighteen months. My two year old prefers a little more action, such as dinosaurs and other animals, to the waving and chasing the Teletubbies offer. Their cooing, simple songs and very bright colors should appeal to infants (at least in theory), though video clips showing children from other parts of the globe are better suited for older children. PBS has done a good job with the DVD as well, including about an hour of program content along with a few extras and even a printed glossary of Teletubbies terminology. A good buy.

If animated characters were forced to live together, would they remain their upstanding and lovable selves, or would their "real" personalities peek out from under the artwork? That's the question posited by Drawn Together, a no-holds-barred satire on reality series that trods gleefully on restraint and good taste in its quest for laughs. Co-created and produced by Dave Jesser and Matt Silverstein of The Man Show, Drawn Together chronicles the misadventures of eight cartoon characters (each thinly veiled takes on famous personas like Superman, SpongeBob Squarepants, and so on) who reside together in a Big Brother-style house while hidden cameras capture their every move. As the first season unfolds, the roommates prove to be on their worst behavior, indulging in illegal substances (i.e., Pokémon-style housemate Ling-Ling's fur in "The Other Cousin"), racism (spoiled princess Clara mistakes hot-pantsed black detective Foxxy for a servant in "Hot Tub"), and all manner of sexual shenanigans (a pregnancy scare forces Clara to reveal a monstrous physical problem in "Clara's Dirty Little Secret"). Obviously, the humor in Drawn Together is strictly for grown-ups) and though it's occasionally vulgar for vulgar's sake, the show is frequently funny and well-performed by its voice talent. The two-disc set features all seven of the first-season episodes that were aired (one episode, "Terms of Endearment," which lampooned actor Christopher Reeve's physical impairment, was pulled after his death, and is slated for the second season), as well as commentary from the vocal cast with Jesser and Silverstein, a selection of deleted and expanded scenes, and most amusingly of all, a karaoke sing-along for the show's raunchy songs. --Paul Gaita

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Pretty Funny.......2007-05-28

Drawn Together is extremely funny and is one of the best shows on Comedy Central. The show does rely on shock value a lot, but that's part of what makes it funny. This show is pretty much a giant parody of reality shows, but unlike almost every reality show ever made, Drawn Together is actually good. I still can't believe that great shows like Jake 2.0 and Titus were cancelled for crappy reality shows! The show does make light of topics that are considered taboo in today's society, but that's part of what makes it interesting. Parts of this series can be considered to be social commentaries, but quite a bit of the show is humor for the sake of humor. It's refreshing to watch something that doesn't get too preachy and up its [...] with a "very important" message in every episode. The voice actors/actresses are all excellent and do a great job portraying their character(s). (Tara Strong does the voices for both Toot and Princess Clara.)

The DVD quality is average; it would have been nice if they included subtitles in English and other languages too. I did like the "Previously on Drawn Together segments" in the extras. I was disappointed that the season only included seven episodes, but season two has much more, including the "Christopher Reeves" episode that wasn't aired at its original date due to Reeves' death. According to the Wikipedia article on this show, the season two box set should be released on September 25, 2007. (However, this is not the official date, just a predicted date.)

Obviously, this show is intended for older people and it's completely uncensored in this box set! Now the viewer can watch this show as I was originally intended to be seen, without FCC censorship.

3 out of 5 stars Nothing to say.......2007-03-09

Well now that I gave my review maybe they will stop sending me the emails

4 out of 5 stars Great parody, OK implementation, poor DVD.......2007-01-16

The Drawn Together series came on the heels of the "reality TV" craze of the late 1990s and early 2000s. The show is clever, however, it's not for the faint of heart. If you are offended by social taboos (and some things that are nearly mainstream), you will not like this show. Beyond that disclaimer, I won't spoil the episode plots. :-)

Once you get past the taboo, there are quite a few funny moments in the show. Where this DVD falls down miserably is the fact that it is extremely poorly implemented. The episodes are split between two DVDs, where they could fit into one. The audio is only stereo, not Dolby 5.1, which is the norm for any series DVD set made in the past five years.

I cannot wait until Season 2 and Season 3 are out on DVD. Hopefully they will be mastered better.

2 out of 5 stars Great show!!! HORRIBLE DVD !!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-12-11

You know the show...if you don't...go get a clue.

Basically, this DVD for the first season was thrown together with tape and bits of string. Poor content, redundant material....banged out and sold to you for a quick buck!

I love the show but I sure hope the 2nd season DVD is of better quality!!!!!

    4 out of 5 stars Refreshingly Non-P.C........2006-11-07

There are so many animated comedies out there and a lot of them seem to follow the formula laid down so brilliantly in 'The Simpsons'. It was high time somebody came along and shook up the ideas a little bit and presented us with something fresh and alternatively funny.

'Drawn Together' is not the sort of show you would watch with a refined aunt or grandmother. Its humour is crude, offensive, grotesque and incredibly funny.
Eight characters from the cartoon world are living together in a 'Big Brother' style reality show. Some times they get on, sometimes they kill each other and occasionally the producers throw in a twist to stir things up. It's a great parody of the state of reality TV shows today.

This first season boxset (one originally intended first episode is held back for season two due to some rather unfortunate timing with real-life events) is seven episodes of shocking comedy which doesn't fall down at any moment.
The wonderful thing about non-politically correct humour is its sense of irony and post-modernism. Anyone who becomes offended through watching it is obviously missing the point. As mentioned in one of the commentaries, the racism portrayed in the show is mocking stupidity about race.

This is a two disc set of great humour with a smattering of special features including some clips of other Comedy Central shows.
Each episode is complete and uncut and there are karaoke and singalong versions of the songs too.

Despite loving this series, I have only given the set four stars because it falls down in one department; the commentaries are headache inducing! It doesn't seem that anyone is there as a moderator and everyone shouting at each other at once is awful to listen to.
Apart from that... a wonderful purchase.

    Bring on season two!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hands down my favorite Comstock title (and all of his titles are first rate).......2007-04-19

Tony Comstock is the creator and master of a new genre of films: explicit couples' sexuality documentaries. Comstock states that "intent to arouse" is often cited as the dividing line between art and porn. Of all the emotions a director might hope to induce in an audience, arousal remains the last taboo, and Tony Comstock takes it head-on.

I bought all of Comstock's collection at the urgings of the editorial team over at the Feddy & Eddy website. Comstock is a genius, and Damon and Hunter is my hands-down favorite of all his titles. For reference, his other titles include Marie and Jack (Comstock's first film, with married pornographic actors), Xana and Dax (an experienced NY blonde and her younger Brazilian lover), Matt & Khym (a 30-something married couple), and Ashley & Kisha (a lesbian couple). Damon and Hunter is the story of two gay male lovers, and I encourage viewers of any sexual orientation to pick this one up. I'm a heterosexual female and I can assure you that both my partner and I enjoyed this one.

Damon and Hunter found one another as roommates in New York City, and started a sexual relationship before their romantic one. One is a Canadian from a family in which they gays outnumber the straights, and the other was raised as a tried-and-true Southern Christian. In the first half of the film, they discuss their love life, attraction, relationship history, and personal turn-ons in frank terms. Who actually doesn't enjoy anal action during stimulation? Was one worried about handling the size of the other? What are their rules for outside guests in the bedroom? The second half of the movie is movie is pure intimate action.

The DVD comes complete with a bonus track showing alternate camera angles, including an optional audio commentary from Tony and Peggy Comstock. The camera angles would be of interest to cinematography students, but for the casual fan, I recommend sticking with the terrific editing job Comstock did for the main film. The audio commentary contains insights about how Comstock finds his subjects (I guess you can find someone to do anything on Craigslist) and his movie-making strategy. Buy this film to enjoy again and again, both as a documentary piece and as erotic cinema, and look to the audio commentary and previews of other titles when you want to go deeper.

This dvd is great for toddlers. Toddlers of all ages seem to love Elmo no matter how "old" he is in the DVD.

The Sesame Beginnings dvd's are fun and educational. I'd reccomend them to moms who want to keep thier kids entertained for a few short moments while doing other tasks like cleaning, etc.

It's just okay. My daughter has all of them but this one doesn't seem to catch her attention. See my other reviews on Sesame Beginnings.

5 out of 5 stars WE LOVE IT! My 2-year old's favorite DVD's!.......2007-01-09

The Sesame Beginnings series (Beginning Together, Make Music Together, Exploring Together) is just wonderful! They are my 2-year old's favorites and my 3-year old loves them as well. All three of the DVD's are very cute (although the Make Music Together is the favorite of my children). Features Sesame characters (Elmo, Cookie Monster, Prairie Dawn, and Big Bird) as babies and has many cute and catchy songs. GREAT set of movies for your little one! You won't regret this purchase! I think these are the best Sesame Street movies yet.

    5 out of 5 stars loved it!.......2006-12-28

My son has enjoyed this dvd. Cute songs, fun content, updated sesame street. I bought several of the books because we liked this dvd so much. It is just something different to enjoy with elmo's daddy giving him a bath, big bird looking in the mirror.... We liked it mostly when my son was under one year.

    5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2006-07-24

We have checked out both Sesame Beginnings from the library and are now buying them. My daughter is almost two and she LOVES them. She learns a lot of mastery from watching the babies. She was all consumed with Elmos World but now asks for these videos. The music is really wonderful and she sings and dances along.

5 out of 5 stars We LOVE THIS!!!.......2006-07-20

We have both Beginning Together and Making Music Together, both are great. My 10mo. old loves the songs and bounces and claps to the beat. The songs are catchy and cute and even enjoyable for the parents. I highly recommend. We prefer Making Music Together to this one although both are great!

Director Chen Kaige moves from the epic sweep of Farewell My Concubine to a small, intimate story about a boy and his father--but creates just as rich an emotional impact. Liu Cheng (Liu Peiqi) takes his 13-year-old son Xiaochung (Tang Yun) to Beijing in the hope of finding a teacher who will foster the boy's talent on the violin. The adolescent boy soon becomes infatuated with one of their neighbors, a golddigger named Lili (the lovely Chen Hong), and becomes a pupil of Professor Jiang (Wang Zhiwen). But Liu discovers that a good teacher is not enough; if Xiaochung is to succeed in the world, he must have a teacher with connections--even if this ambition threatens to pull father and son apart. Together would be sappy if it weren't for the emotional honesty of the actors; under Kaige's clean direction, the movie is graceful and deeply moving. --Bret Fetzer

But when Xiaochun is adopted by a famous music tutor, success finally seems within reachuntil a shocking discovery begins to unravel his entire world and the boy must make the most difficult choice ofhis life. 5 out of 5 stars Chinese irony?.......2007-04-29

Not so much a review, as to express my utter delight in the scene where Lilli's faithless lover is claiming credit for buying her a wonderful coat, and saying that he won't stray again. And I suddenly realized that the music playing in the background was, "It ain't necessarily so" --from Porgy and Bess, I think. But after the immersion in the Chinese culture accompanied by glorious violin music, the tongue in cheek insertion of that song really tickled me.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful Music, Lovely story.......2007-01-12

A boy and his dad move from a small country town to the big city in Beijing. From there they enter a competition to get enrolled into a prestigious music school. The boy gets fifth place but should have gotten first. The father gets him a teacher and from there his career takes flight. Unfortunately, the boys father lacks the means and the influence to get him anywhere. Through hard work and luck the boy gets another teacher who can lead him to fame and fortune. Will he leave his simple life for glory or be just like his father and never move ahead?

Throughout the story the boy struggles with leaving his teacher, making sure this is the career he wants, falling in love, accepting his fate, and dealing with competition.

The music for the movie in beautifully played and makes me want to watch the movie over and over. I strongly recommend this movie to anyone who is a fan of classical music and international films.

5 out of 5 stars Meanings on many levels!.......2006-09-22

This is an excellent movie, and has meanings on many levels.

First, there is the loving relationship between the father and the son. He, a peasant, moves to Beijing, knowing no one, completely unaccustomed to living in a large city, struggling to find work, missing his home.

Then, there is the love of so many Chinese for things western. Not just in music, which is the focus of this movie, but in appliances, clothes, malls, the drive for success, etc. The Chinese are not all that different from us.

On another level there is the rebelliousness and naivety of the youngster. He may be a musical genius, but in other matters he is just a 14 year old, acting impulsively, doing stupid things at times, and forming unconventional relationships.

Then there is the relationship the boy has with his teachers. One of them appears not too far from his peasant roots but the other one is cosmopolitan, with a degree of renown. They both feel a certain love for the boy, as does everyone whom he meets.

Beijing is a modern city, but like any other city, including those in America, there are pockets of poverty. But it is a large, busy, vibrant city, with room for everyone.

The main focus of the plot is the boy and his virtuosity. Nature or nurture? Apparently, some people are born with a special talent.

This is a very enjoyable movie, and has a lot to say. All of the actors are perfectly cast, and almost everything about the movie is credible.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2006-09-20

Unlike many chinese movies that make their way to Western shores, "Together" has a realistic feel. The characters are all interesting and the entire atmosphere of the movie gives a true impression of what it is like to live in China.
It is unfortunate that the only Chinese movies we get are Jackie Chan flicks and duds like "Hero" and "House of Flying Daggers". "Together" is a really great film from beginning to to end. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Family Values Movie.......2006-07-29

The secret in this movie is not made known until very near the end. But, in the end, it changes nothing, except that it increases one's respect for Xisochun's dad. He reminds me very much of the father in the movie 'Smile.' Xisochun is an adopted child, a foundling. Throughout most of the movie, we think his father is just a doting father, trying to get the best advantages for his talented son. Knowing that Xisochun is a foundling, I believe, increases one's admiration for this father. Everything about this little family is a good example of traditional family values, except that the mother walked out years before (as she did in 'Smile' as well). Still, this is one reason every family should see this great movie because it shows a self-sacrificing father trying to do the best for his son. In the end, it comes down to a choice between pursuing success at the expense of family, or putting family ahead of success. Parents might wish to discuss with their children what the proper balance would be - isn't it possible to maintain both family and success? If so, how? Adoptive parents, especially, will like this movie; but, it is a wonderful movie for anyone.

[For another unforgettable movie about the undying love of a mother for a foundling in 1800's South Africa, be sure to see 'Fiela's Child,' also available through Amazon.com.]

2 out of 5 stars Good for young toddlers- not mine.......2007-03-13

I bought this DVD after having read the glowing reviews for it on Amazon. I am sorry to say that I ended up watching more of it than my toddler did, and even I was not that impressed. I happen to LIKE the Baby Einsten DVDs, and my daughter ADORES them- especially the Baby Da Vinci. She is 20 months old and has liked them all since she was an infant. This DVD felt stilted, too scripted and slow to me. She didn't watch it either. I would recommend most of the Baby Einsten DVDs over this at any time.

5 out of 5 stars Best one so far!.......2007-03-11

Don't listen to the other reviewer Sonja Knight. This is by far the best one out there. My daughter has them all and this is the only one that she will sit and watch. The other Sesame Beginnings are not horrible but definitely not the best ones.

3 out of 5 stars NOT AS GOOD AS "BEGINNING TOGETHER".......2007-02-24

After my daughter fell in love with "Beginning Together", I decided to purchase another DVD in the series--"Make Music Together". However, this one came up flat when compared to "Beginning Together".

After reading that "Make Music Together" features Wayne Brady and his daughter, I anticipated a lively and humorous performance, but Wayne's interaction with his daughter was flat. She was a shy and nonresponsive young girl--which is OK in the real world, but made for a bad DVD.

"Beginning Together" featured singer, Brandy and her daughter. They interacted well together, and her daughter was very outgoing and laughed alot, and loved the Sesame Street characters. Aside from the muppets' singing, this made the DVD entertaining.

Wayne's interaction with his daughter fell short and made the DVD less enjoyable than "Beginning Together". If you don't have "Beginning Together", get it instead of this one.

    5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-01-17

You just can't beat Children's Television Workshop for creating wonderful, developmentally appropriate products. My 13 month old loves bopping along, and has started to immitate words from the songs. There's lots of repitition and the theme of each segment is consistent across scenes, which means that its unified and cohesive (as opposed to most Baby Einstein DVDS). As usual, the show combines moms, dads and other relatives with all sorts of colors and backgrounds. Plus you will LOVE the songs!

    5 out of 5 stars Great music!.......2007-01-10

My 13 month old daughter absolutely loves this video. The songs are also tolerable hearing over and over. It is very cute! We utilize the songs in our everyday lives with different situations to help our daughter learn! Great video the only thing that could improve it would be more of it!
