Writer-director Ron Shelton's 1992 follow-up to the baseball comedy-drama Bull Durham involves a different sport: basketball, as played on the neighborhood hustler circuit. Woody Harrelson is Billy Hoyle, a good shooter using his white complexion to fool black players into thinking he can be stomped in easy bets. Billy's banter-filled matchup against Sidney Deane (Wesley Snipes) on a public court leads to a partnership in which Sidney becomes Billy's manager, taking the white outsider on a tour of the tougher sections of Los Angeles, where he plays homeboys for a few bucks. Inevitably, the two come apart over their innate competitiveness, a situation that has to be reevaluated after Billy gets into trouble with some underworld creditors. Meanwhile, Billy's girlfriend (Rosie Perez) sits at home preparing herself for a maybe-someday date appearance on Jeopardy. As with all of Shelton's sports-related movies (Tin Cup, his script for The Best of Times), White Men Can't Jump is less about the fine points of the game than it is the rules by which players survive it. The script is literate and crackling with wit and satire (a scene in which a politician sponsors a black-white "solidarity" game is hilarious). The actors are entirely in sync, and the scenes under and around the hoops are a thrill to watch. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars White Man CAN Jump.......2006-07-02

I've always enjoyed Ron Shelton's films - well written and directed, and this film features Woody and Wesley in full flow. They make such an ideal couple they did Money Train right after this. But give the script and directing credit. This is a simple but well acted and crafted film. The chemistry is great. I enjoyed watching it again. Feels as fresh as it did the first time...

5 out of 5 stars Now that's how you make a film.......2005-10-27

This film has got to be one of the best I've ever seen. Right from the beginning when Billy and Sydney are first introduced to each other it is undeniably pure genius. It has many different elements to it all brilliantly done comedy, drama, romance and of course the best of them all - basketball. I love hearing the trash talking out on the courts.

3 out of 5 stars if goria didn't want da $$$$ y did she leave billy in da 1st place.......2005-08-25

this was a good movie goria was very spoiled and took advantage of billy "woody harrison" he was hustling all day 2 put food on da table and when he comes home his girlfriend says how much $ did u make instead of i miss u she left him at least 3 times n da movie and when she comes back it is for money after billy and snidy win some $ from da basketball contests i would have given this money a higher score if goria would have understand goria because she took things 2 far i no she was kind of smart of winning da game show on jeopardy but she still of have there until the end of da movie Joe Brown

wes snipes "snidy" and woody harrison "billy" 2 good actors made comedy history by putting on 1 of da better comedy films of 1992 everything these two did was perfect this movie was both seious and funny but more funny it was full with cool basketball moves but da movie was focused on woody harrision not being able to dunk a basketball which was funny because toward da middle of da movie he tried many times 2 dunk a ball while wesely kept on teasing him rosey peruz was good as billy's girlfriend soon 2 b wife i could fill if she would have stay with him a little while longer this movie would have been better because they been through a lot 2gether n da movie running from husters, moving from place to place n a matter of days, 2 rosy peruz "goria" winnning da jeopardy game she forgave woody if she loved him she would have stayed and never gave up on him but other than that this was 1 of woody and wes snipes best movies together n da 90s they made 3 movies together

3 out of 5 stars Shut Up Gloria.......2004-08-13

On-court scenes are entertaining, even though the Director used an excessive amount of slow-motion. Snipes and Harrelson are entertaining and believable as basketball hustlers. However, Rosie Perez pretty much killed this movie for me. I can't stand her - the way she lounges around the apartment doing nothing expecting her boyfried to support her stupid "destiny" to be on a game show, the alcoholism, the three-foot thick fake Brooklyn meets Puero Rican accent, or how she always seems to get her way by taking a seat on her boyfriend's lap. The scene where whe asks Snipes' wife for a refund is a joke. Just shoot hopes and talk trash, fellas - leave all of the "Movin' On Up" stuff for the Jeffersons.

"HUSTLER WHITE"

A Shocker

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

"Hustler White" (Here TV!) is quite an experience. It is not a movie you will like but it is one you [probably will never forget. There is not much plot (as is typical of Bruce LaBruce films). The story of a German "queen" who is obsessed with a hustler who isn't quite sure if he is or if he isn't gay is what the film is about. Tony Ward (One of Madonna's exes) is Monty, the hustler and LaBruce, himself, plays the German, Jurgen. The scene of the action is Santa Monica Boulevard where johns and their pimps and their entourages play sidebars to Jurgen and Monty.
Let me start by saying this is a very strange film bordering on the bizarre which s too bad because the themes are universal and the plot development hits the nail right on the head. The opening scene is a harbinger of things to come and once you get through the blood and the gore, you have an interesting film, to say the least. As anti-establishment and anti-everything that LaBruce is, I love his films for their sheer flamboyance. When he makes a movie he throws everything at the audience, sometimes too much so.
LaBruce succeeds as a director but his acting falls short. To put it bluntly the acting in the film is all rather amateurish. The film has plenty of shocks--frontal nudity, graphic S and M, sexual and realistic scenes that are outrageous. This is not a movie for the queasy.
After the foot amputation scene in the very beginning the story just bounces around Hollywood, looking at the way hustlers do business and then moves into the development of the two main characters. I frankly expected a movie like this about the life of street hustlers to be both [...] and gross but I was wrong. Disgusting it is, [...] it is not. This is one of those in your face movies where nothing is left to the imagination. One review I read called the film avant-garde porn which is a flattering way of saying that you will see artistic sex.
Now That I have torn the film apart, I do have some good things to say. Bruce LaBruce loves to shock and he does, but beneath that shock there is a story of the way we live in a hedonistic society. Almost Fellini-like with its menagerie of really strange cast members, "Hustler White" pleases where so many other films do not. It shows the reality and the ugliness of a world that lives for sex in all of its varieties. Some of the film is quite frightening because it makes us confront strange sexual practices that even though we know that they exist we have never actually seen before.
Jurgen's pursuit of Monty is just a cat and mouse game and the film shows us the unimportance of sexual trysts. When sex can be bartered like a pound of potatoes, it loses the meaning that it was originally intended it have.
I hate to Say it for being criticized by my fellow critics but I liked "Hustler White". Its grittiness and realism said a lot to me and I respect innovation. Sure it is flawed but isn't everyone?

1 out of 5 stars TOO BAD THERE IS NOT LOWER THEN ONE STAR.......2006-08-04

I have seen bad movies but this is one of the worst, dont waste your time, thank god I had it by a copy from a friend, sorry

1 out of 5 stars Find Better Ways to Spend Your Time.......2004-07-12

Just horrible. Not worth more than a curious peek...then turn it off!

4 out of 5 stars Deviant Fun.......2004-02-04

Sure the movie is odd, but that doesn't mean it's bad. The scenes of gang bangs, amputee sex, mummification, among others are not for everyone, but this stuff DOES go on.

Ignore the "shocking" moments and you have a fun film with a dark sense of humor. The acting is sub-par, but that's what goes with this genre (think John Waters, Greg Araki, Larry Clark). Taken as what it is, it's diverting, amusing, dark and memorable (for better or worse, the images DO stick with you).

1 out of 5 stars Downright digraceful.......2003-09-19

I have seen a lot of films, but this is definitely the worst. The content of this film almost made me ashamed to be gay, as it showed a real ugly side to a sick and twisted world of the film-makers fantasies. You couldn't even class this garbage as good porn.

5 out of 5 stars Good flick -- better than your avg crap @ theaters today.........2005-04-14

With that, I say rent/buy Whiteboy if your are into alot of varied subject matter of today, portrayed by well trained up-and-coming actors. Sure, it's low-budget (hell Jan-Michael Vincent is in it!) so it's not Lord of the Rings or anything but it does portray gritty street and home life in LA and generally, modern sububia. There is a latino edge and race cards are played all over the film but it blows something like the commercially lauded "American beauty" away. Okay so this won't win an Oscar, but that's exactly why I rent or buy a film -- because some academy says it's outstanding. I like realistic movies and this is one. Kinda in the vein of another Ferrar flick, Bad Lieutenant. Gritty. Realistic. Multiple plotlines intertwined. This is what I like in a film so I do recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars ALISON LOHMAN ROCKS.......2004-08-29

Alison Lohman rocks in this movie. She is a great actress , and really makes you feel scared for her. I saw her first in White Oleander , and watch everything she is in. If you love Alison Lohman like I do , watch this movie.

4 out of 5 stars an abel ferrara fan.......2004-06-16

When I saw Abel Ferrara was presenting this film, and being a major Ferrara Fan , I had to see it. I was not dissapointed. I can see why Abel Ferrara liked it, and thought this is a film he might have made early in his career.I don't want to spoil the plot by saying what happens , watch it if you want. It is low budget but the story and acting is killer.

    4 out of 5 stars Powerful , gritty, an L.A. MEAN STREETS.......2004-01-21

This film reminded me of Mean Streets , the way it was shot , and acted , except in Los Angeles. The acting was real also. Cool film.

    1 out of 5 stars Worst movie......EVER!!!.......2004-01-06

DO NOT be led into checking this piece of ca-ca out because it has Abel Ferrara's name attatched to it (what the hell was he thinking?). This movie is HORRIBLE. Not, "bad"....HORRIBLE!!! Totally unwatchable and lame. It really deserves 0 stars but Amazon wouldn't let me choose that.

    3 out of 5 stars A Shocker.......2007-01-19
