William Steig's delightfully fractured fairy tale is the right stuff for this computer-animated adaptation full of verve and wit. Our title character (voiced by Mike Myers) is an agreeable enough ogre who wants to live his days in peace. When the diminutive Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow) evicts local fairy-tale creatures (including the now-famous Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, and the Gingerbread Man), they settle in the ogre's swamp and Shrek wants answers from Farquaad. A quest of sorts starts for Shrek and his new pal, a talking donkey (Eddie Murphy), where battles have to be won and a princess (Cameron Diaz) must be rescued from a dragon lair in a thrilling action sequence. The story is stronger than most animated fare, but it's the humor that makes Shrek a winner. The PG rating is stretched when Murphy and Myers hit their strides. The mild potty humor is fun enough for 10-year-olds but will never embarrass their parents. Shrek is never as warm and inspired as the Toy Story films, but the realistic computer animation and a rollicking soundtrack keep the entertainment in fine form. Produced by DreamWorks, the film also takes several delicious stabs at its crosstown rival, Disney. --Doug Thomas

The lovably ugly green ogre returns with his green bride and furry, hooved friend in Shrek 2. The newlywed Shrek and Princess Fiona are invited to Fiona's former kingdom, Far Far Away, to have the marriage blessed by Fiona's parents--which Shrek thinks is a bad, bad idea, and he's proved right: The parents are horrified by their daughter's transformation into an ogress, a fairy godmother wants her son Prince Charming to win Fiona, and a feline assassin is hired to get Shrek out of the way. The computer animation is more detailed than ever, but it's the acting that make the comedy work--in addition to the return of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, Shrek 2 features the flexible voices of Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins), John Cleese (Monty Python's Flying Circus), Antonio Banderas (Desperado), and Jennifer Saunders (Absolutely Fabulous) as the gleefully wicked fairy godmother. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Equal to or better than the first.......2007-07-03

This movie was very hilarious. It had the same gags as the first one did, but with many more characters and with a much deeper plot.

This time, Shrek and Fiona are married. They get an announcement from "mom and dad." (That being FIONA's mom and dad) that compels them to journey to the land of "Far Far Away..."

Donkey's back, as is Gingey and the whole crew. Here, we meet Puss, Fairy Godmother, Prince Charming and we get a glimpse into Fiona's true heart.... a glimpse that makes Shrek question his own existence. Honestly, this movie is very well done. The animation is sharp and bright. The motivation and the plot are both believable, even amid the backdrop of purest fantasy.

Who is Fiona's true love? It's no secret that, by the end of the movie, we learn that Shrek is just THA MAN! (Or is that THA OGRE?)

I really enjoyed this movie. I think it has something for every age.

1 out of 5 stars Shrek 2: Possibly the Worst Movie in History (and I didn't even see it).......2007-07-02

Shrek 2 is one of the worst movies in world history, possibly the worst ever. The jokes, parodies and gimmicks were boring, dumb and retarded, and I wouldn't even let myself fall asleep to this movie because I wouldn't want to have a dream about it, God forbid--watching it while awake is bad enough.

Oh, btw, I didn't actually even see this movie--I just knew that it was awful, so I was intent on never, ever seeing it as long as I live.

I liked the reviewer who suggested we should lock this film up in a secret government facility and away from the outside world. A better idea might be holding a special witch trial and burning the Master Print at the stake.

Btw, I HATED the first Shrek, which I actually did see, and I already HATE Shrek 3 and Shrek 4-1000, or 4-1,000,000, or however many of these monstrosities they force on us.

The main reason I hate Shrek so much is the ridiculous premise of the movie--that "looks don't matter", it's all about "love" and "character". Yeah, right. As if 99% of everyone on Earth doesn't marry partly for looks and attraction (as long as you're not living under the Taliban or The House of Saud)??? Duh! OF COURSE looks matter, they've mattered since Helen of Troy, Cleopatra, Marie Antoniette, Greta Garbo, Rita Hayworth, right up to Scarlett Johanssen, Julia Roberts, and "the girl next door".

The moronic, retarded, absurd idea that it's somehow "bad" to like women because they're beautiful strikes me as everything that's wrong with America today--this society is all about denying Reality and living a lie, all for the sake of "getting along", and not "offending anyone". I find the idea that feeling thinking human beings should be prevented from being offended or made to "like people" they don't, by force, to be terrifying. It's literally Orwellian.

The fact that millions of Americans fall for this lunacy, this illogic, frightens me. What is this country coming to?

Please, save us from Shrek, the people who make these sick films, and all the other body snatchers running loose.

5 out of 5 stars THE GREATEST!.......2007-06-28

This Shrek production is FABULOUS! You simply can't improve on PERFECTION. The script, the animation, the MUSIC -- all great. Although I'm not a kid, I thoroughly enjoyed the child-like balance of animated characterizations that took me back some years, but an excellent story line, as well. This is a definite Collector's Item. Everyone, young and old and inbetween, should own SHREK 2. On a scale of 1 to 10, I give it a "12"!

5 out of 5 stars Very funny and well composed story line.......2007-06-27

Love this one too although I think the first one is a little better but this one has a tons of fun also. Watched several times.

1 out of 5 stars Do not like being forced to sit through other movie previews.......2007-06-24

I like this movie, but I'm giving the DVD a bad rating because this DVD forces you to watch two other pixar video previews and does not allow you to go straight to the disk root menu. Nearly all DVD's allow you to either fast forward using your chapter forward button or your menu button so that you can go straight to starting the movie instead of watching other promos. This DVD forces you to sit through Ben Stiller promote Madagascar... which you can handle once, but not over and over and over.

¡¡COMPRENLA!!!

Doesn't everybody like movies? Sorry I'm getting off track! Their different categories in movies, my favorite is comedy movies. I'm going to talk about a popular movie that has two sequels, and no , I'm not talking about Shrek 2 or 3.I'm talking about shrek the
Original. In the movie it starts off with the two main characters, Shrek and Donkey, going off on a dangerous adventure to save Princess Fiona, so Shrek can get his home
Back. Throughout the movie there is a lot of comedy. You also meet a lot of characters,
That come and go during the movie such as Gingy, the gingerbread man.
My opinion is that this movie is very funny. If I was on a deserted island and could only bring four things, I would bring this movie, a TV, a generator, and DVD player. When I saw this movie I could not stop talking about it. If I could rate this movie from one to ten I think it would be a ten.
I recommend this movie to everybody! This is an outstanding movie. If you didn't see this movie, you should go and rent it now.

5 out of 5 stars The First and the best.......2007-06-08

shrek is one of the best animated movies that dreamworks did, it's funny, brilliant and charming. this is a must see- must own movie. it's awesome.

5 out of 5 stars I Stand Corrected - Shrek's Not Just A Good Movie, It's A GREAT Movie.......2007-06-06

The first time I saw "Shrek" I enjoyed it, thought it had some neat characters and really good animation. But that was about it; I wasn't bowled right over and didn't see how it ranked up there with other animated movies from the early 2000s like "Spirited Away" and "Lilo & Stitch". But quite a while later they brought out "Shrek 2", and more recently the third chapter, and they both looked good, and I decided that instead of going right into the newer ones, I'd go back. Rent the first one over again and see if there was something I missed - even if there wasn't, it was pretty good the first time and would probably be a good refresher for the next ones.

I don't know if the stars were way out of alignment that first time, or if I just wasn't in the proper frame of mind; but the most recent time around I enjoyed "Shrek" ten times as much. So I stand corrected, it does belong up there in the same breath with "Lilo & Stitch" and "Spirited Away" and so on.

In a fabulous kingdom, a monarch named Lord Farquand has banned all 'fairy tale creatures', and the elves, blind mice (3 of 'em), little pigs (3 again), and so on seek refuge anywhere they can, ending up en masse in the swamp around Shrek's wooden hovel, where Farquand's soldiers fear to tread. Shrek is a big, green, powerful and occasionally bumbling ogre who isn't 'trying to be cranky while hiding his tenderness underneath' - he's sumltaneously a cranky lummox and a sweet-minded, noble creature of great heart (although that latter part is kind of a light hidden under a barrel for the first half of the movie). So as not to give the whole story away, I'll skip to the jist - in order to force Farquand to lift his ban on the fairy tale creatures (thus enabling them to leave his home and leave Shrek in peace and solitude), Shrek agrees to embark on a journey (which a talking donkey named, appropriately enough, Donkey, accompanies him on) to rescue a sleeping princess from a castle guarded by a fierce dragon.

The three main players of the show - Shrek, Donkey, and Princess Fiona - are brilliant characters who play great off of one another. The supporting cast is loaded with colorful individuals (the Gingerbread Man is a great show-stealer), and the movie is full of humorous fantasy action and some great, often wry, wit. If one wanted to quibble, I still think it could have done without as much of an emphasis on flatulence-humor, but when it's got as much prime comedy and as much heart as "Shrek" does, who wants to quibble? It's got everything you want in an All Ages movie, full of charm, adventure, humor, love and fantastic visuals, and textured - like some of the old bugs Bunny cartoons - with extra, subtly hidden, little jokes and moments that older viewers will appreciate but won't elicit too many awkward-to-answer questions from three year-old viewers. And as a last note, don't forget to stay past the end credits for some final treats. It's priceless.

It's not easy being an ogre, but Shrek finds it doubly difficult for an ogre like himself to fill in for a king when his father-in-law King Harold of Far, Far Away falls ill in this third Shrek movie. Shrek's attempts to fulfill his kingly duties play like a blooper reel, with boat christenings and knighting ceremonies gone terribly wrong, and to say that Shrek (Mike Myers) is insecure about his new role is a gross understatement. When King Harold (John Cleese) passes away, Shrek sets out with Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss-in-Boots (Antonio Banderas) to find Arthur (Justin Timberlake), the only heir in line for the throne besides himself. Just as Shrek sets sail to find Artie (as Arthur is more commonly known), Fiona (Cameron Diaz) shocks Shrek with the news that she's pregnant. Soon after, Prince Charming (Rupert Everett) sends Captain Hook (Ian McShane) in pursuit of Shrek and imprisons Fiona and her fellow Princesses as part of his plan to install himself as King of Far, Far Away. Shrek finds an awkward Artie jousting with his high school classmate Lancelot (John Krasinski) and, while Artie is certainly no picture of kingliness, Shrek is determined to drag him back to Far, Far Away to assume the throne. Mishaps and comedy abound, including a spell gone wrong that locks Donkey and Puss-in-Boots inside one another's bodies. While Fiona and the other Princesses prove they're anything but helpless women, Artie and Shrek battle their own fears of inadequacy in a struggle to discover their own self-worth. In the end, Shrek, Artie, and Fiona each learn a lot about their individual strengths and what truly makes each of them happy. Of course, it's the pervasive humor and wit that make Shrek the Third so side-splittingly appealing. Rated PG for some crude and suggestive humor, but appropriate for most families with children ages 6 and older. --Tami Horiuchi

3 out of 5 stars Shrek the Third : Why the Charm Wasn't There.......2007-07-03

Everyone has to see Shrek the Third. Why? Because they love the original, so they have to see what happens next. That's what I do! It's the norm. But this volume in the 'Shrek' francise was a little more sour than sweet.

First with the bad: Joke Quality
Now, I've said this before and I'll say it again. Jokes for kids are NOT just fart and burp jokes! I am currently 12 years old, and I find it very degrading that I fall under the category of a 'kid' and not a 'teen'. A burp or fart every once in a while is okay, but every 6 or 7 minutes!? The writers at Dreamworks really need to remember that other children besides 7 year olds will be coming to the film and will not laugh at these jokes! There were also a lot of suggestive jokes in the movie that were there for older teenagers or adults. I, knowing what most of them meant, found it very uncomfortable sitting next to my parents while the innuendo jokes played on the screen. I think that there are too many jokes that kids will not understand. Pixar, for instance, has mastered the art of making jokes that both children and adults (and me!) will laugh at, most of them with witty one-liners and physical comedy: and very little suggestive humor! Hooray!

Another "Ehhh..." Quality: Character Development
If you introduce new characters, you have to make them exciting, thought provoking, emotionally deep, and easy to relate to. How many new characters were there? 1...2...3...4...5...6!!!! Four (!SPOILERS!) new princesses all arrive, pleasantly funny and witty: A clueless Cinderella, a cynical Snow White, a sleepy (DUH!) Sleeping Beauty, and an evil Rapunzel. They are fortunately fun characters, and they offer great jokes. Strangely, none of them are married...that's just a little confusing. No, it's not them that I'm worried about. Nor am I worried about a very strange Merlin who I enjoyed a lot. ("No, I can't teleport you off to a distant land. How about a hug instead?") It's Arthur (Artie) that I'm throughly confused about. If you get a new character, it's your job to make them interesting and deep. Artie wasn't deep! He's a mysterious character. You can safely say that he is only ever show two emotions: happiness and anger. Nothing in between. I did stare at him on the screen, however. Not because of intrest, but because he looks exactly (in the face) like a girl in my class. I also had a dream that Artie was married to the little mermaid's daughter and defeated a very fat Davy Jones. Confused? I am.

A Questionable Subject: The Plot
When I took my two friends (who are twins) to see Shrek the Third, I had already seen it. One of the twins commented that (quote) "It's funny, but if you analize the story, the plot needs a lot of work." I laughed. It was just like her to say that. But as I thought about it more and more, the plot WAS bad. It's like the makers just cooked up a burnt movie and coated it with delicious jokes to hide the foul taste of the real movie. Why did Charming need to put on a play? Who was Artie's father? Why are guards so gullible? These questions and more poured into my head! The plot jumps around and is pretty easy to follow, but it leaves you asking 'why?'.

The Good: Animation
While sterile at times, the animation was pretty darn good for a Dreamworks movie. The landscapes and the new areas around Far Far Away were rich to look at. Some characters did lack some style, but the animation is better than that of the first Shrek movie. What about Shrek 2, you ask? Not as good. As good as a Pixar film? Now, let's not hope for miracles. The animation does make it very enjoyable.

All in all, Shrek the Third is pretty much just okay. There are some funny laughs, like a hilarious scene when Shrek is trying to talk to Artie in 'hip' teenage lingo. Go and see it for the scenery and to see Shrek triumph again.

Sincerely,

~Dapplewing~

1 out of 5 stars Utter Crap - People who like Shrek are RETARDED.......2007-07-02

Guess what? I'm never seeing this horrible movie, ever. Shrek The First was the last Shrek movie I saw, and I utterly hated it.

I would NEVER marry or even date ANY ugly girl, and certainly not the nauseating Fiona. I LIKE beautiful women. Beauty is desireable--it's a GOOD thing. DUH. Sure, I also want to find a girl I love, but does that mean looks don't matter??!%#&

For all of you Shrek-lovers, who want to live a lie and deny that you like beautiful women, go ahead--waste your entire life and remain in the Matrix.

Everyone associated with these films should be assassinated, but unfortunately that's against the law. So just boycott these movies. They're bad for America and the rest of the Free World, and they're incredibly, dangerously subversive.

What's happening to this country is terrifying. People are being asked to deny reality, to allow themselves to willingly be brainwashed, drugged, re-programmed, all so everyone can just "get along with each other".

We are told we should "love everyone", even people we DON'T like, even people who actually disgust us or mean us harm, even people who DESERVE to be hated.

Hmm, I wonder why the people in power are pushing such an agenda? Maybe because, if we really admitted how we should feel, how we DO feel, if we examined our true BELIEFS, that small voice in your inner heart, we would realize that the people in power DESERVE to be hated and shamed, they deserve to be dragged out of office and lynched, or at least incarcerated. Of course, you can't do that, you can't rebel or speak out and denounce evil people and immoral laws if you "HAVE TO love everyone". How convenient! Soon the government will enforce this mandatory "love" by passing another law.

Welcome to 1984, George Orwell, and the New World Order. Is it any wonder this country has problems?

I will go on chasing beautiful women and enjoying my life till the day I die, while all you zombies, truth-deniers and phonies watch Shrek The Third and whatever else you losers do. Please keep away from me. You're committing treason against civilization as far as I'm concerned.

Anyone who likes Shrek disgusts me. And I spit on the Shrek creators and all the politicians and authorities. No doubt they LOVE this movie just like they love all propaganda.

4 out of 5 stars Another Solid Entry To A Great Series.......2007-06-28

SHREK THE THIRD offers some interesting crossroads for our favorite green ogre (Michael Myers). With Fiona's (Cameron Diaz) frog father on his deathbed, Shrek has had to serve as king of Far Far Away in the interim. And uneasy lies the crown. We have some knee-slapping good times watching Shrek to his level-best to be the king to the people, but even an ogre with a good heart just isn't cut out to be the king. He messes up nearly everything he dies, and he stinks at being the king. Shrek is the first to admit this.

Thankfully, Eddie Murphy is back as Donkey and Antonio Banderas returns as Puss In Boots. The movie just wouldn't have been the same without them. Their constant bickering and commentary helped move that plot and the characters along quickly. Plus they got some of the funniest lines in the movie.

Prince Charming returns as the villain in this one. The opener showing him working dinner theater in a low level pub is just hilarious. The effort so fits the character, and so does all the grief he takes at the hands of the audience. Of course, he's trying to exorcize his demons by starring in a play where he triumphs over Shrek, which is what he thinks he should have done in the first place.

Then, and I'm going to use a line here that was painfully obvious in the movie that was never used, Fiona's father croaks (he's a frog, remember?). But before he does, actually after several false alarms, he tells Shrek that there is one other heir to the kingdom of Far Far Away: a young boy named Arthur.

Shrek resolves to go find Arthur and crown the boy king. All Shrek wants to do, all Shrek ever wants to do, is get back to his beloved swamp and get on with sharing his life with Fiona. But when he boards the ship to begin his voyage, Fiona tells him she is pregnant. It's all too much for Shrek. The nightmare he has about having ogre children is absolutely side-splitting. Not only that, but the movie double dips on the whole nightmare premise and caught me flat-footed on one of the quick twists.

In the meantime, back in the heart of villainy, Prince Charming retreats to a pub where all the evil characters in the fairy tales hang out and begrudge their existence. The scene where Charming rallies the troops really works. I was ready to vote for him myself.

After that, we're treated to a series of eye-popping adventures as Shrek goes back to high school to get Artie, which is how Arthur is known among his peers. Shrek also discovers that Arthur is the much-maligned prey of the school bullies and butt of all practical jokes. No one likes him.

With nothing there to stay for, Arthur decides to join Shrek and go back to be the king. Along the way Shrek ends up playing the father role to Arthur, which could have been predicted but still played well.

With the end of the movie in sight, everything is up for grabs. The visual comedy in the combat scenes is amazing. The twists and turns the plot makes as it follows a much-trod path are brilliant. It's the little things in the Shrek films that add up to big laughs. Like the pay-for-play window Pinocchio dances in while Shrek is trying to get information about the location of Fiona. Like Arthur throwing himself on the ground and crying his eyes out to get Merlin to help them get home. Like Donkey, while possessed by Puss In Boots, when he tries to make all his fur stand on end like a cat. Like Donkey's kids when they spelled out the smoke message that tells him they love him.

One of the best things to come out of left field, and there were several, was Fiona's speech to the princesses of Far Far Away to rally them into a combat force. Sleeping Beauty's attack on the tree guards at the gate to the city is simply amazing, and I found myself lifting my jaw off the floor and laughing out loud. Music is so much a part of the Shrek movies, and there's plenty of it on the soundtrack.

I always go see the Shrek movies on the big screen, and I have a hard time waiting for the DVD release so I can watch them again. Despite my attention to the screen, there's always something I miss. Plus so many of the laughs can be enjoyed over and over. Like the Gingerbread Man's Six Million Dollar Man run through the fields. I can't wait for the DVD, and I can't wait to see if there will be - hopefully - a SHREK 4.

4 out of 5 stars Funny, Beautiful, and Thought Provoking.......2007-06-20

The first thing I want to highlight about this movie is the beautiful animation. It is a feast for the eyes and the ears. Very colorful and exciting to watch!

The second thing I would say is that the plot is substantial. Shrek is next in line for the throne of Far Far Away. But he doesn't really want to be king. So his job is to convince the next in line, a poor, self-effacing picked on young man named Arthur.

While the expectant father Shrek is off on a journey to bring Arthur back to the city, another man with evil aspirations usurps authority in the town, locking up Shrek;s wife and friends in a castle chamber.

The plot sounds pretty serious, but there are plenty of light moments, and the singing of Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die" at Shrek's father in law's funeral was gut bustingly funny.

Like the first two Shrek movies, this one has a stellar soundtrack and plenty of star power in the voices behind the characters. I give the movie 4 stars because the plot and dialogue slows down the film's momentum. It seems that the movie makers had to struggle to get 80 minutes worth of narrative into the script.

But kids 5 and up will laugh out loud and will be transfixed to the end. Recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars DEVERITAS, DEVERITAS!!!!.......2007-06-30

¡¡COMPRENLA!!!

1 out of 5 stars "Monsters, Inc." is much better than this by 20 miles!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-22

This movie isn't all that great. It is only funny in the beginning. Princess Fiona kind of gives me on my nerves and what is all this talking about LOVE in the end????????? Please, this movie isn't really that good!! Monsters, Inc was much better, more funnier, more enjoyable, much better. Get Monsters, Inc insted. That is the movie of the feature and will always be. You'll be happier.

    Shrek PG
