Strap on your pantaloons and prepare to travel with Jim Hawkins and Blind Pew to one of the most famous fictional islands in history. Walt Disney's 1950 adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's swashbuckling masterpiece has held up extremely well, with action and characterizations that feel freshly minted (although it's unlikely that the Mouse of today would sanction the high level of booze flowing throughout the picture). Great fun, with nary a wasted frame and, in the character of Robert Newton's much-imitated Long John, one of cinema's most boisterously crowd-pleasing villains ever. (Proving that you can't keep a good--er, bad man down, Newton would return with director Byron Haskins for the enjoyable sequel, Long John Silver.) Watching this classic is like having a flashback to some perfect Technicolor childhood. --Andrew Wright

Description

Ahoy, mateys! Come aboard the good ship Hispaniola and set sail in search of buried treasure in one of Disney's most critically acclaimed adventure classics -- presented in its original, uncut theatrical version! In his first all-live-action feature, Walt Disney has vividly brought to life Robert Louis Stevenson's timeless tale of buccaneers and buried gold. Authentic locales, rich color photography, and musket-roaring action set the stage for the stouthearted heroics of young Jim Hawkins (Bobby Driscoll) -- and the skullduggery of that wily, one-legged pirate of all pirates, Long John Silver. Aye, for the kind of excitement that only treasure and treachery can bring, there's no better destination than TREASURE ISLAND!

5 out of 5 stars Treasure Island.......2007-06-27

Byron Haskin's definitive film version of Stevenson's salty tale stands out for Newton's glorious, scenery chewing performance as Long John, the most charming and devious cut-throat sailing the seven seas, and Driscoll also holds his own as Jim. The Disney studio spared no expense in bringing "Treasure" to the screen again (it was previously filmed in 1934), as both production design and color photography are first-rate. To would-be pirates of all ages, all aboard for this flavorful, exciting adventure.

Classic Disney import from England with excellent actors. A Treasure for everyone of every age.

5 out of 5 stars Disney Classic Inspired by Stevenson's Great Novel.......2007-05-27

Disney has always called on classic stories for inspiration. Robert Louis Stevenson's great classic "Treasure Island" provided the inspiration for this Disney adaptation. The adaptation deviates from Stevenson's and becomes a classic separate from Stevenson's.

Young Jim Hawkins (the late Bobby Driscoll, who appeared in "The Fighting Sullivans," "Song of the South," "So Dear to My Heart," and was the voice of Peter Pan in the Disney classic) encounters pirate Captain Billy Bones. Bones is an imposing figure, and yet he is kind to Jim Hawkins. Soon, other, more vicious and threatening, characters appear on the scene, all looking for Billy Bones' treasure map, which is now in the possession of Jim Hawkins. One of those of these characters is Long John Silver (the late Robert Newton, who also played Mr. Fix in the epic 1950's classic "Around the World in 80 Days").

Jim Hawkins is now caught up in a series of events over which he initially has little control. A group of men decide to pursue the treasure shown on the map, and they decide to take Jim Hawkins aboard as a cabin boy. Jim is our observer throughout this tale, and we see many of the events that transpire through his eyes. Thus, we gain knowledge of an impending mutiny and come to realize how vicious the pirates masquerading as crewmembers are.

The excitement and action increase when the pirates mutiny and everyone searches for the treasure. Jim comes into his own as he realizes that he is the one person in a position to make thing happen, if he only dares. Though Disney modified many things from Stevenson's story in this adaptation, Jim Hawkins' coming of age story remains relatively intact. We also learn why Long John Silver is beloved by all who have seen this classic as we see his vicious side and the care and concern he has for Jim Hawkins.

I remember seeing this story decades ago as a young child. The violence in the movie (though there is minimal blood) seemed normal for a pirate movie. I also thought little of the drinking and smoking that occurred throughout the movie. Watching the movie as a parent, I was a little surprised at the violence, drinking and smoking that occur in this movie, but I also realize that I survived seeing all those things and, more importantly, I remember my enjoyment of the movie as a child; i.e., for those of you who think children should be protected from these images, get a life. Pirates drank, were violent and smoked. Disney managed to keep the rough stuff to a level that achieves a PG rating. If you object to drinking, smoking and violence in real life, then use this story to help explain why we do not do those things.

I do consider this movie a family movie, in spite of my comments above. You may wish to wait until the youngest in the family is 7 or 8 years old, just so that you can explain the effects of alcohol and smoking and that life in that era was very different from our life today.

Disney's version of "Treasure Island" is a grand classic. The movie does mute some of Stevenson's morality tale and does remove much of Stevenson's characterizations. These changes were necessary to adapt Stevenson's classic to a 96 minute film. In spite of those changes, "Treasure Island" survives as a marvelous coming-of-age story that is both entertaining and inspirational. My children loved this movie when they were in elementary school and I suspect yours will too.

Enjoy!

This kid-friendly disc serves as an advance for the DVD release of Disney's Treasure Planet feature, while emphasizing the story's roots in the written word. The main attraction is the movie's story, which can be read aloud in five different languages while viewers watch successive, still images from the original animated film. Sound strange? Sure, but the process is engrossing for children--a natural audience for storytelling. Also on board is a multilingual vocabulary experience, in which you can hear words associated with Treasure Planet's story (e.g., "chest") in Spanish, Italian, French, etc. Two songs from the film, written and performed by Goo Goo Dolls icon John Rzeznik, also get the image-by-image treatment, though the disc also includes a powerful, ghostly celestial music video for Rzeznik's "I'm Still Here (Jim's Theme)." There's also a game compatible with Playstation 2 (and other gaming consoles with DVD drive). --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars This is a GREAT IDEA!!!.......2007-06-30

For Disney to make a movie like this. This is a very imaginative movie that stretches your mind to the limits of animation in a very "science fiction" sort of way. I do enjoy Disney movies because they are very orginal in their stories and characters and every movie is very unique. I do think that this one will be a classic before long for both young and old. I highly recommend this one to anyone that loves Disney movies!!!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Disney movie.......2007-06-12

I don't know what it is that pulled me into this movie. I think it's the futuristic setting along with Jim. I really like his character and I like Silver's too. Everyone keeps saying that it's more of a "teenager movie" instead of a kid movie. The thing is, kids are going to grow up and I think that this would be a great movie for them to watch to help them to follow their dreams. Anyway, that's just my outlook on it. Overall, I just really love this movie.

5 out of 5 stars totally underrated movie .......2007-05-05

Treasure Planet is by far one of my favorite Disney movies of all time. I'm so shocked it gets such bad reviews!

It's a classic story of adventure and coming-of-age, adapted from the novel "Treasure Island" by Robert Louis Stevenson. No, it is not a direct interpretation! But that's ok. The characters and the story are adapted from the novel to fit with the culture and imagination of today's world, and given a magical twist, as if 1800s England had special sci-fi technology.

In this version, Jim is a boy of fifteen whose father-angst has left him committing crimes and having trouble at home and at school, much to the pain of his young mother, Sarah. A chance meeting with old Billy Bones, former cabin-boy to the dreaded pirate Captain Flint, ends with him being given the map and key to Treasure Planet, a fabled place that contains the Loot of a Thousand Worlds, taken by Flint. This begins Jim's chance to set out on his own and learn about the world and who he is, and what potential he has.

The relationship between Silver and Jim is similar, but not exactly the same. It becomes a deep father/son relationship, with Jim finding in Silver what he always wanted from his deadbeat father. Silver is enigmatic, double-faced, and powerful, but grows a deep, unexpected soft spot for Jim that changes his mind about the treasure he's always sought.

Overall, I think the movie is fantastic. The animation is buttery smooth and is visually stunning, the characters are unique and interesting and all have a history long before the story takes place, and the adaptation from the original novel is very clever and updates the story well. The music, done by James Newton Howard and Johnny Rzeznik, is absolutely gorgeous, with a touch of Celtic influence added to the powerful orchestrations and themes. The story is heartwarming and powerful.

4 out of 5 stars Argghhhhh.......2007-04-11

What a wonderful twist on the classic Treasure Island. Silver is a cyborg and young Jim is a typical teen looking to find his place. Morph is a wonderful addition and will grab you and pull you into the adventure and fun.

For many people, this 1934 version is the definitive Treasure Island: the great chemistry between Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper, the rousing pirate anthems, and the stubborn parrot on the shoulder. The pairing of the actors was a cinch, coming three years after their tremendously popular teaming in The Champ. Cooper plays Jim Hawkins, the English boy who discovers a treasure map amongst the possessions of one Billy Bones (Lionel Barrymore in a robust extended cameo), a pirate visitor to the Admiral Benbow Inn. Beery, indelibly, is the one-legged, parrot-toting seadog known as Long John Silver, who joins up on the treasure-hunting expedition by pretending to be a humble cook--though the audience knows he is a fearsome pirate captain. Victor Fleming was just the right director for this manly voyage, holding the MGM luster at bay and allowing the crew of characters actors (among them Otto Kruger, Lewis Stone, and "Chic" Sale) to find their sea legs. At times, the relationship between Jim and Silver is closer to The Champ than to Robert Louis Stevenson's marvelous novel, but it's still true in spirit to the bond between boy and surrogate father. The story has been remade many times, notably in 1950 with Robert Newton as Silver, but this one inspires the longest memories. --Robert Horton

5 out of 5 stars The real pirate movie!.......2007-06-09

This is the real pirate movie! Ever since I saw this film the first time a long time ago, this is what I think of when you talk about buccaneers. Here you can hear the whole piratesong: 15 men on a dead mans chest....And learn about the black spot. Things that has been an inspiration to the pirates of the carribeans films. Wallace Berry and Jackie Cooper does a great acting job. Long John Silver is the crookiest crook, but still charming in a ruff way and young Jim Hawkins can't help liking him. This film is from 1934, so the film is in black and white. A great movie, says I, says you, says.....

4 out of 5 stars Treasure Island.......2007-05-17

Great Stuff for Adults who love the classics. Wallis Berry and Jackie Cooper do a great job of providing swashbuckeling entertainment. My 5 and 7 year old found it somewhat "boring" after seeing Pirates of the Caribbean more than a few times - although, my 7 year old has requested seeing it again and enjoyed it more the second time. You might have to turn up the sound on this copy as some of the old english may be hard to follow. Otherwise a very good buy. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Treasure Island.......2007-01-24

Lionel Barrymore is the standout in this movie. The best Treasure Island movie there ever was!

4 out of 5 stars Classic Adventure (With Pirates-- ARG!).......2007-01-07

Treasure Island is one of the several films that the dream team of Wallace Beery and Jackie Cooper made together. This one seems to illustrate their relationship off-screen much better than others in the past. Cooper plays the main character, a boy who works in his father's tavern. His life is changed when one day, a sailor called Captain walks in (Lionel Barrymore). His appearance sets off a series of events leading to pirates entering the area, leader of all being Long John Silver (Beery). They come to seek the treasure indicatd on a treasure map the Captain leaves at the tavern when he dies suddenly. However, the map is in the hands of loyal British subjects under the orders of an honest man (Lewis Stone), so the pirates have to resort to trickery to get their way.

What is disturbing about the movie is how evil one man can be to a boy who looks up to him as a friend and as a father-figure. One can only imagine that this was the way Beery really treated Cooper in life, especially from hearing Cooper tell how much he hated his constant co-star. This information makes the film all the more powerful and heartbreaking at times. Otherwise, it is a wonderful adventure story, something that never goes out of style.

Also included on the DVD is the trailer for the film and a few short subjects including an early color short.

4 out of 5 stars Great, yet flawed..........2006-11-23

This 1935 version of Treasure Island has all the hallmarks of a cinema classic and yet is somehow not terribly engaging. The only aspect I can identify that stopped me from enjoying it to the fullest was the casting of Jackie Cooper as Jim Hawkins. His performance is stiff and quite two-dimensional. In later life the guy himself admitted that he really wasn't a very good child actor. Wallace Beery however is so incredibly effective in his role of Long John Silver that he redeems the film and makes it worth watching.
The picture and sound quality of this release are as superb as we have all come to expect from Warner Home Video releases of films of this age.

If you consider yourself a fan of Elliot and haven't seen this film, then you, sir, are indeed NOT a true fan! Pull up your pants, stop licking your empty bowl of cereal and make it your first priority to see this movie immediately!

5 out of 5 stars Little Known Facts.......2007-01-11

Ok, first of all, David Letterman's in it. Not for very long, but long enough to make your sides hurt, and that's at the beginning. If you like sarcastic humor and a little fantasy, this is definitely the movie for you.

5 out of 5 stars A Flop Upon Release, But Really a Hit.......2006-08-17

Am I like the only one who likes this film, yet people always seem to flock to the latest lousy Will Ferrell opus in droves? While "Cabin Boy" is VERY retarded, it has made me laugh heartily on repeated viewings. I guess it all depends on your tolerance of Chris Elliott. Understandably not the most handsome of people, and maybe that's the key as to why I like it and others don't. People tolerate Ferrell and Sandler and their antics because they are reasonably good looking, but I just go for the humor and execution of it more than looks. I can't really explain it. It's kind of the "Three Stooges" school of comedy and they CERTAINLY weren't good looking, especially Shemp!

And any film with David Letterman back in his funny days can't be all bad..."You wanna buy a monkey?"

Upon writing this, I read some of the other reviews on Amazon and was surprised that I am indeed not alone, but everyone has mentioned that this film is kind of a "guilty pleasure" and that many will not "get it". I don't care, I love it!!

5 out of 5 stars i worship cabin boy.......2006-07-01

this is one of the best movies! if you want a good laugh, its priceless. I've been hunting for it, but its out of print. so i amazoned it. and buying it made my day. the characters are a riot and the plot is hilarious. you cant get enough of the cabin boy dancing to cat on a hot tin roof while having cans thrown at him by pirates!

5 out of 5 stars When does this movie take place!!!.......2006-03-03

This movie is so retarded that it's fun. Chris Elliot is hilarious and not too many people know it. Andy Richter is hilarious too. "Oh great... gum" Does anyone know when it supposed to take place becasue it has modern things like cars, microwaves, fishsticks, but it also looks like it is supposed to be in the 1800's. But that just adds fun to it. Some how. I don't really know how but it does so don't question me. I like the part when they send him out on the raft with the jug of chocolate milk and he says somethng like i'm thirsty and the old man says well we gave you chocolate milk. It's hilarious. Just watch it.

Product Description

Ali Zaoua is the March selection in The Film Movement Series. Other Arabic films in the Series include Inch'allah Dimanche and Viva Laldjerie. Ali, Kwita, Omar, and Boukber are a group of street urchins living on the hard streets of Casablanca. Their everyday lives are filled with violence, begging, and indifference. In order to survive they create a bond of friendship and family between then. The bond is cut short when Ali is senselessly killed at the beginning of the film by a blow to the head; his life taken by a single act of a rival gang. Ali's friends decide not to report his death to the police, who would have the boy buried in a potter's field. Instead they decide to give him a worthy burial, to bury Ali on the private island he so often dreamed of. Ali Zaoua captures the power of dreams and presence of hope in the harshest of circumstances. Subscribers to Film Movement receive an award-winning film such as Ali Zaoua to own on DVD each month - directly from the world's top film festivals.

5 out of 5 stars The Real Casablanca.......2006-12-04

This is an incredibly moving portrait of the life of homeless children on the streets of Casablanca. I first saw this four years ago at an Arab Film Festival, and just now watched it again, for the first time after living in Casablanca for three years, learning the culture and language. While I question the complete accuracy of some of the translation, the main message comes across correctly, showing us the real Casablanca.

That other movie by the name- it has nothing to do with reality. Nice movie, but it's done on a soundstage in Hollywood. Honestly, there should be a clue when the moving moment in the movie is when there's a battle between the German and French national anthems- and no mention of the Moroccan anthem. If you want to see a movie of what life is like in Morocco, I'd recommend Hideous Kinky. If you want to see what life is like in Casablanca, I'd recommend this one.

There are many beautiful places in Morocco. Casablanca's not one of them. It's a large, gritty city of six million. The best thing it has going for it are the unofficial three million poor living in shanty towns- for there is great opportunity in Casablanca to care for the poor and work with them. This movie vividly describes their plight- and the poorest of the poor who don't even have a roof over their heads. There are truly children everywhere, begging when the taxi pulls up, sniffing glue, and looking for food. Unique among major Arab cities, Casablanca truly does support two red light districts. This is a hard movie. There are scenes in it you never want to see again- and made all the worse because they are reality.

There is also poignant joy in the movie, interspersed wit magical realism and simple animation showing the hope the children create for themselves in the midst of squalor and evil. Even without glue they find moments to laugh at. Nabil Ayouch, the director, scored a coup in using actual street kids for performances, one of whom (the soccer player) went on to star in the most popular Moroccan sitcoms, like Laila Fatima. It gives greater veracity to the ups and downs of their lives. At times the soccer player breaks out into song, using the national anthem with new words of simple love. The joy in cora, soccer, and the support for that greatest of Casablanca teams, Raja, is palpable. Soccer brings the moments of greatest bliss in the movie, where the soccer player brings a smile that can light up the entire block. This is true Casablanca. In three years, the happiest I ever saw men on the street is when Morocco advanced to the Finals of the Africa Cup.

This movie is filled with awfulness, for it is too true, too real. It is about the hardship of life. And finding the small parts of good, even if you have to imagine them. In Moroccan Arabic, Raja means "Hope".

5 out of 5 stars Respect and dignity prevail over a wretched life.......2005-08-13

Director Nabil Ayouvh's 2nd movie focuses the daily activities of street urchins in Casablanca Morocco. These young boys lived together in vacant lots and participated in gang life, begging, prostitution, glue sniffing and violence. Ali Zaoua ran away from home when his mother was propositioned to sell his eyes.

The movie begins when four boys break away from their gang leader, Dib. As the thugs attempt to win them back, Young Ali Zaoua is killed when hit in the head with by a flying rock. We don't get to know who Ali is, as he is killed immediately, but we learn about him as the boys worship him as a hero and a prince as they embark on a journey to bury him with dignity, on a private island he dreamed about. Ali's dream was to be a sailor. The friends hide his body in a hole/cave so that only they can bury him at sea.

It is said that Director Ayouch recruited non-professional actors, actual street kids, unlike the oldest boy, a deaf gang leader who is a real actor.

You will see depiction of the rough life these boys endure, but you will explore their childhood innocence and their dreams. It is a sharp contrast. We see this film through the eyes of the children. It is a moving film about friends who live between children surviving on the streets with brutal realities and fables and fantasy.

This 2000 movie has won numerous awards. The DVD subtitles are very clear to read. There isn't much on the special features, and lacks much about the director or any commentary.

See this movie with family, although there is harsh language, it may not be suitable for young children. The message is powerful and moving. ....MzRizz
