The classic girlhood fantasy of marrying a handsome prince is given a surprisingly realistic and subtle treatment in The Prince and Me. A pre-med student at the University of Wisconsin named Paige (Julia Stiles, 10 Things I Hate About You, Mona Lisa Smile) collides with a lazy, presumptuous exchange student named Eddie (Luke Mably, 28 Days Later) and, after a prickly beginning, falls in love with him--only to discover that Eddie is Edvard, the Crown Prince of Denmark. The scenario is pure wish-fulfillment, but director Martha Coolidge (Valley Girl, Rambling Rose) not only takes a closer look at what royal life is really like, she also takes the time to turn these fantasy roles into characters that have more than two dimensions. It's still a romantic comedy aimed at teenagers, but within the genre's parameters, the movie has a strong visual style and what might be called depth. --Bret Fetzer

Run, Don't Walk Away From this One.......2007-06-06
You just saw the Prince and Me, and with magic in your eyes you want more, well, you are not going to find it here in this straight to video horror.
The scene where the Prince's future wife walks into a room of the worst computer animated butterflies should have been hint enough but there is more...
First you wonder where the rest of the cast has gone, not even the minor, minor characters have returned for a reprise (except the poor Prince).
The plot is not worthy of a movie of the week. It is the typical "We must prevent a commoner from ascending to throne."
Trust me, put the first one back in the DVD player and lets pretend it just did not happen. Watch it and you will be royally sore.
The Prince & Me 2 - The Roy Wedding.......2007-05-30
A fine, light romance movie, have enjoyed watching it several times. The only thing that would have made this movie better would have been to have the original cast members from "The Prince and Me" movie. But still a very fine movie and beautiful scenery.
Very disappointed.......2007-05-26
It's hard to like a second movie like this one... Only 1 actor returned out of the big characters in the 1st movie. That is what really disappointed me. Julia really made the character in the 1st movie, and would have really made a huge difference in this film.
Yes, it is that bad........2007-04-27
I finally watched this movie on the Disney channel the other night. Well really I can only say I watched half of the movie. I just couldn't take it anymore. If you liked the first one, DO NOT WATCH THIS! The actress that took over for Julia is much more better suited for the evil Norwegian princess role than Paige Morgan. Luke Mably is the only redeeming actor in the movie and even he feels like he is just there for the paycheck. It's a real turd.
The Prince & Me 2.......2007-03-16
What most people are forgetting is that this is (yes, though a sequel) also a movie of its own. If you don't compare the two movies, what you get is not too bad. The acting is... decent, the set is still rather beautiful, and you also get a bit of laugh out of it.
When you compare the first and the second though, of course, the first one is going to be better. The cast in the first one is more ably than the second.
In the first movie, you have Julia Stiles and Miranda Richardson. They alone ably moved the movie right along. In the second one, you have a completely new cast, and every actor has a certain way in which they see their character; so, you mustn't be too harsh when you've seen the differentiation.
What I consider to be the downfall of the movie is the presentation of the characters and even the actors they chose, because it is the actors that brings a certain something to a film.
Paige's look in this movie is prissy. I thought the actress, Kam Heskin, is better fitted in a movie such as Mean Girls or something of the like. She also doesn't hold onto the portrayal very well. She seems to lose grasp on the concept of Paige's character every now and then (And she pouts too much).
Luke Mably seems lost and uncomfortable in the film. During the first movie, his performance isn't bad. It is actually quite good. I think he gets a bit lost in this movie because he doesn't have a compatible actor to work against as in the first one with Julia Stiles.
What is also disappointing is the lack of depth in the plot. The plot seems almost silly and childish. There's a lacking of character development in the script (which may have also caused the actors to fail a bit in this department).
If you really want to watch this film, I highly suggest that you rent it first.

A "magic" story.......2007-06-08
I did not see the movie,my college daughter did. She describes the movie as being "a magic story between two people that come from different societies, and who discover that love has nothing to do with background, but with chemistry, connection between them" She also avows that "It's the best movie, the best cast,is so real and powerful, and sends a great message,_no one should lose his/her self or gave up at his/her dreams, not even for love, because then, no one in the relationship will be happy! The compromises are made only if there is no lost for both parties".
And I am writing this review at her request. What parents do for their children! :)
Fantabulous!.......2007-05-18
Thumbs Up for both movies! I'm a sucker for romantic fairy tales and this two movies tops all. Luke Mably is drop dead gorgeous and he look every inch the prince that he portrays. The chemistry between Paige and Eddy is heartwarming. The sequel would have been nicer if the entire cast from the original show reprise their roles....btw,where has " Eddy" little sister disappear to in the sequel??
whitty characters.......2007-03-07
cute, sweet romance - whitty characters that will make you laugh out loud.
The Prince and Me.......2007-01-03
A very delightful comedy. The type of movie that is enjoyable for the whole family. One that makes you want to get out the pop corn for a good time.
Why was this movie set in Wisconsin? .......2006-12-27
I usually like romantic comedies, but this one was for the birds. Maybe the robin, our state bird here in Wisconsin. Then again, maybe not, since this movie seemed to get ALL the Wisconsin stuff wrong.
People outside on Thanksgiving in just long sleeves? Not where I live. I mean, they could have chosen from about ten other midwestern states if all they wanted was that 'naive farm girl meets big-city boy' feel (which is lame and predictable, by the way).
I like Julia Stiles, and the young man was okay, but getting the local stuff wrong was a turnoff, and it really kind of took me out of the movie.
Tsk tsk.

This is a surprisingly winning little comedy, though hardly a hit. Extrapolated from Bruno Barreto's Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands, the film stars Sally Field as a woman about to embark on her second marriage after her first husband, a charismatic Broadway director and choreographer (James Caan), has died. But as she plans her wedding to the likable but unexciting Jeff Bridges, Caan returns from the dead. Though only she can see him, it's a formula for disaster: She begins to doubt her plans and wonders whether she'd be happier with Caan's ghost than with Bridges's live body. Meanwhile, everyone else begins to doubt her sanity because she's talking to a dead man. Better than critics gave it credit for being, although you'll probably enjoy it more if you've never seen the original. --Marshall Fine
Description
James Caan is tap-dancing ghost. Jeff Bridges is the very much alive stuffed shirt. Together, they make the perfect match for Sally Field, the woman caught between both men in this uproarious romp through the supernatural. The spooky fun begins when Kay Villano is one week away from marrying the serious Dr. Rupert Baines, and an uninvited guest appears on the scene; the ghost of Kay's dead, but oh-so-debonair husband Jolly. Kay's predicament is made worse because no one else can see or hear Jolly but her. The celestial shenanigans are non-stop as the three superstars hysterically battle out an odd eternal triangle with deliciously new dimensions.

You'll love it!.......2007-07-03
If you're looking for a light-hearted, funny but touching comedy to pass the time one evening, this is the one for you! Sally Field was great, she's a good comedic actress. James Caan was good- but not great. He makes Jolly a likable dead guy! And I thought Jeff Bridges was great! Yes, his character is kind of wooden, but I always thought that was a great way to play it- especially against the popular, talented, life-of-the-party character Jolly.
The supporting cast was wonderfully funny-especially Kay's father...but you have to pay attention when he's in a scene or you'll miss much of his humor- it's subtle!
Try Kiss Me Goodbye- you'll love it!
A charmer, in spite of itself........2007-05-04
This film is hardly a comedic masterpiece, however, it proved a very fine vehicle for all three principals, especially Sally Field who, in my opinion, delivers a quirky and hopelessly likeable performance as the woman torn between the ghost of her charming, albeit, womanizing and egotistical dead husband and the bland, academic all around drip of a fiancé, James Caan and Jeff Bridges, respectively. There's none of that hammy grandstanding that has marred her performance in her later work, such as that overwrought cemetery scene in Steel Magnolias. Here she seems to be not only comfortable in the character's skin and predicament but appears to really be enjoying herself in the process, as does everyone else. The film has this unpretentious vibe that works totally in its favor and everyone seems to be relaxed and in the mood to deliver the goods. There are some extremely funny set pieces in this film and I've always considered it a much underrated little charmer, despite some silly scenes and less than inspired ideas.
A Fair Romantic Comedy.......2007-04-12
While this one was not great, it was enjoyable for a first viewing. It is the story of a widow who is planning on remarrying. The widow is played by sally field and her beaux is played by Jeff Bridges. They seem to love each other and are prepared for a new life together when an outside force intervenes. That outside force is the ghost of the first husband, played by James Caan.
The deceased hubby was a very successful and prominent figure on Broadway. He has many friends and was always the life of the party. The new guy is more of a stick in the mud and has a hard time living up to expectations. Things are made much worse when the jealous ghost gets involved. Having the widow be the only one who can see or hear him just makes everyone feel crazy.
It turns out that the ghost has a hidden agenda that involves TRUE LOVE.
Its an amusing story, not great but not to shabby either.
Yes, I am a hopeless romantic..........2007-03-04
I love to see Sally Field in comedies and drama. This movie has them both. The main character seems to have one foot in the past and the other in the future. She can't seem to make up her mind which one she wants to stay in touch with! It is a cute movie and will live up to your expectations of a good romantic comedy!
Premise sounds promising, but the film doesn't deliver........2007-02-20
This could have been a wonderful comedic farce, with repartee similar to that found in classics such as Bringing Up Baby. However, it's like two movies. The first 45 minutes or hour are long and boring, repeating issues (over and over again) between characters who aren't at all likable and who make you wonder why you're supposed to care about them. Ironically, I found myself caring very much about the character played by Jeff Bridges, who inexplicably is made out to be a monster by everyone else.
Finally the film picks up. When it does, it's very funny in spots. However, one is still left wondering why the heck Bridges would want to marry the character of Sally Fields, whose stupidity and flightiness are overshadowed only by the self-centeredness of James Caan, who plays her two-timing (dead) husband. If you have time to waste, rent it, with a ready finger for the fast-forward button. Otherwise, there are many films that are a better choice. To see ghosts in a genuinely humorous and heart-warming flick, see Heart & Soul. In a similar vein, I'd also recommend Chances Are.

Black comedy fun.......2003-01-23
So glad this film is finally getting a release. I had seen it at a festival some two years ago. Fantastic performances by Joanne Baron and most surprisingly of all Harry Hamlin (who I've never been a big fan of). Also, has Lainie Kazan of My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Beaches fame. An improv film that doesn't feel like its improved. If you like Christopher Guest type comedies you'll love this film.

The Prince & Me.......2006-09-01
True, it has a story line which we all know will have the "Happy Ending" [This is why I choose the film to begin with]. Yet it's how the path is taken that I found so sweet. I like the feeling I have after watching this film. I do have several favorite scenes. The laundry room scene where he helps her understand the language of Shakespeare's Sonnets. "The Sun itself sees not till heaven clears" Rarely do people say what they really mean, he explains. The scene at her family's home, his reply to her answer regarding the push pins on the map. The parade scene, the name "Paige" is chanted as the people point to her so that "Eddie" can find her. He breaks all rules, turning his horse to go to the one he loves.
So yes, it is a story line we all know, but this 44 year old woman likes this film very much.
A JULIA STILES DOUBLE FEATURE..........2005-02-14
These are two films that fans of Julia Stiles should definitely enjoy. While both films have their good and bad points, "Save the Last Dance" is definitely the stronger film of the two.

THE PRINCE AND ME ***
With its excellent cast and Cinderella storyline, this is a fairly formulaic, predictable film about a very focused young woman, Paige Morgan (Julia Stiles), a farmer's daughter from Wisconsin who wants to become a doctor. She is so focused that she simply does not date, that is, until she is a pre-med student at the University of Wisconsin and meets "Eddie" (Luke Mably), a fellow student at the University. Despite an inauspicious first meeting, she and "Eddie" become lab partners, work in the same student hang-out joint, and eventually fall in love. Little does she know that "Eddie" is really Edvard, the Crown Prince of Denmark.
It seems that Edvard, nothing more than a rich, spoiled royal playboy, originally set out to attend the University of Wisconsin incognito, accompanied by his valet, Soren (Ben Miller), in hopes of sowing some wild oats and scoring with the chicks. When he meets Julia, his hopes of an easy, breezy fling are dashed, when he discovers that his charms are initially lost upon her. They eventually become friends, as they each have something that they can teach the other, but end up falling in love. Just as they are on the bring of consummating their love, the paparazzi descend upon them, and all hell breaks loose.
Paige is, of course, understandably miffed that "Eddie" has not told her the truth. Edvard, however, makes Paige an honorable proposal of marriage. Needless to say, the royal family is initially less than thrilled with the Crown Prince's choice of a mate. While King Haraald (James Fox) feels that it is his son's choice, Queen Rosalind (Miranda Richardson) is not a happy camper at the prospect of an American commoner for a daughter-in-law. Of course, Paige doesn't help any, as on the surface she comes across as a stolid, unsophisticated, and uncultured, though otherwise nice, young woman. Still, it seems that Edvard has done a three hundred and sixty degree turn and become a serious and stable young man since his attachment to Paige developed. Then, Paige has second thoughts about becoming the next Queen of Denmark, throwing a small monkey wrench into the works.
James Fox and Miranda Richardson steal the movie out from under Julia Stiles' nose, however brief their appearance. Moreover, there is simply little chemistry between Ms. Stiles and her leading man, Luke Mably. While I think that Ms. Stiles is one of the better young actresses around, this film is simply not one of her finer performances, as her portrayal of Paige is often leaden. It could simply be that she was hampered by the quality of the script. As for Luke Mably, he had his moments, but they were not enough to make this film more than what it is. This is simply a pleasant, romantic piece of fluff that is worth a rental and not much more.

SAVE THE LAST DANCE ****
This is a well acted, somewhat sanitized and idealized story of a talented teenage girl who, on the cusp of achieving her dream, loses everything, only to find it again in a way no one would have predicted. It is a story about attaining one's dreams and the process by which they may become a reality. This is a well acted, though predictable, coming of age tale which can be enjoyed by young and old alike.
Here, the talented Julia Stiles plays the role of Sara, a teenager who happens to be a talented ballet dancer. Auditioning for the famous Julliard School while angry at her single parent mother for being late to her audition, she fumbles her audition. She finishes, only to discover that her mother, in her haste to make Sara's audition, died in a tragic car accident on her way. Blaming herself for her mother's death, Sara gives up ballet.
Her pleasant life suddenly snatched from her, Sara is forced to go live with her estranged dad, Roy, wonderfully acted by Terry Tinney. A down and out jazz musician who lives on Chicago's tough south side, Roy does the best he can to make up for lost time. Sara, seemingly undaunted by her seamy new surroundings, enters a predominantly black, inner city high school, where she is befriended by fellow student, Chanelle, a single mom with a hunky, intelligent brother, Derek, played by Sean Patrick Thomas, who is well cast in the role. Bound for Georgetown University, Derek hopes to one day become a doctor.
Through her blossoming relationship with Derek, Sara begins to dance again. It is through his encouragement and nurturing that she regains the confidence to follow her dream and audition once again for Julliard. It is also through his commitment to Sara that Derek finds the courage to tell his gangsta wanna be friend that he wants no further involvement in his friend's nefarious activities, before it is too late for him.
Sara's audition is a show stopping dance routine that is the icing on this enjoyable, coming of age film. It is a testament to hope and to the power of love.

Tsk tsk.
