Editorial Review:
Amazon.com essential video
Manhattan, Woody Allen's follow-up to Oscar-winning Annie Hall, is a film of many distinctions: its glorious all-Gershwin score, its breathtakingly elegant black-and-white, widescreen cinematography by Gordon Willis (best-known for shooting the Godfather movies); its deeply shaded performances; its witty screenplay that marked a new level in Allen's artistic maturity; and its catalog of Things that Make Life Worth Living. But Manhattan is also distinguished in the realm of home video as the first motion picture to be released only in a widescreen version. You wouldn't want to see it any other way. Allen's "Rhapsody in Gray" concerns, as his own character puts it, "people in Manhattan who are constantly creating these real, unnecessary, neurotic problems for themselves, because it keeps them from dealing with more unsolvable, terrifying problems about the universe." It's a romantic comedy about infidelity and betrayal, the rules of love and friendship, young girls (a radiant and sweet Mariel Hemingway) and older men (Allen), innocence, and sophistication. (a favorite phrase is used to describe a piece of sculpture at the Guggenheim: "It has a marvelous kind of negative capability.") The movie's themes can be summed up in two key lines: "I can't believe you met somebody you like better than me," and "It's very important to have some kind of personal integrity." OK, so they may not sound like such sparkling snatches of brilliant dialogue, but Manhattan puts those ideas across with such emotion that you feel an ache in your heart. --Jim Emerson

Celtic Woman, the PBS sensation, returns for 2007 in A New Journey: Live at Slane Castle, Ireland. Most of the elements return as well: vocalists Chloe, Meav, Lisa, and Orla; fiery fiddler Mairead; music director David Downes; chorus and orchestra; and the New Age-y Celtic and traditional music. New for this show is New Zealand vocalist Hayley Westenra, a picturesque outdoor location, and an almost entirely new song list. Chloe sings "The Prayer" (made famous by Josh Groban) and "Panis Angelicus"; Lisa covers "Caledonia," "The Blessing," and "The Voice"; Orla sings "Newgrange" and accompanies herself on harp for "Carrickfergus"; Meav sings "Dulaman"; Mairead plays "Granuaile's Dance" and "Shenandoah: The Pacific Slope"; and Hayley sings "Scarborough Fair" by herself and duets with Mairead (Handel's "Lascia Ch'io Pianga") and Meav ("The Last Rose of Summer"). Then of course the group performs together ("The Sky and the Dawn and the Sun," "Over the Rainbow," "Beyond the Sea," "At the Ceili," "Sing Out!", "Spanish Lady," "Mo Ghile Mear"). Encore performances from the original show are Enya's "Orinoco Flow," "Danny Boy," "Somewhere," and "You Raise Me Up." Hayley proves to be an excellent fit among the beautiful voices, and Lisa seems to emerge as the talent most deserving of attention, but overall the show lacks some of the fresh sparkle of the original. The song list isn't quite as strong, and some of the "primp and pose" choreography is just silly. But Celtic Woman is never less than charming, and at its best can be quite stirring. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Just marvelous.......2007-06-27

I did not know anything about Celtic Woman before I bought this product. I have a lot of concert DVD's, but this turned out to become one of my top favorites. I don't know how many times I have watced it, it is just marvelous. I have showed it to many of my friends, who also has been taken away by the beautiful music, fantastic setting and outstanding performers!!

2 out of 5 stars I'm sorry but............2007-06-13

This DVD (not so much the CD) really is a bit over the edge....The Stepford Wives Do Celtic Music???...the guy pounding away wildly on the drums...the 3,000 extra singers...the constant awkward fashion show runway walk down the stage....the costume changes..the castle....waaaaaaaaaay over the top for my tastes...and the inappropriate CONSTANT switches to the audience reaction...this entire production was monsterous....I know that I will be the ONLY person who makes any of these points and that PBS stations from L.A. to the Suez Canal will broadacast this thing forever in membership drives... but this DVD is just not crafted to these wonderful singers....I just couldn't believe it.

I have every CD any of these women have done individually and I would highly recommend those CD's along with the original DVD and all the Celtic Woman CD's....but this DVD is so bad.

This is CELTIC music which relies more on simplicity and beauty...it was like sitting in a dentist chair WATCHING the tremendously talented Haley Westenra suddenly be thrown into this group as if she needed to do this to advance her own career....it was shocking if you have followed Haley's career over the last few years to see her as part of this overblown mess..I think this was a step backwards for her. She seemed out of place.

The gal jumping around with the fiddle like some sort of adult elf was just about the "my god, what next?" limit for me...until they focused on the wild bore Caliban guy trying to break his drums...banging away like he was smashing huge boulders.....

Looks like a bunch of Wall Street people got a hold of good thing (as they did with the Olympics and soon with NASCAR) and then said if a little is good..than an avalanche of it is better...no matter if it descends into bad taste...

The "good thing" here are gorgeous women who can sing very well.....that should have been enough on its own merits but instead what we get here on this DVD is every cliche known to man.

Cringe...and then cringe some more...

Sure it will sell but I hope the next time around all those handlers understand the words subtle and nuance. This DVD is like watching a war documentary. Again..the music on the CD is OK..but this DVD uber production is just so overblown that it leaves you dazed and beaten up...how they could have managed to do that with Celtic music is nearly criminal.

Prepare to be captivated by the graceful beauty and infectious energy of the 12 Girls Band! Two years after their best-selling, chart-topping US debut, Eastern Energy, the group returns with a brand-new album (Shanghai) and concert DVD (Live from Shanghai), showcasing an eclectic mix of traditional Chinese folk melodies and selections of jazz, classical, and pop music.

Formed in 2001, their 2003 debut album in Japan, Beautiful Energy, sold 2 million units, and ranks as the highest-selling Chinese band in Japan. These 12 talented young women playing traditional Chinese instruments — the erhu, pipa, yanguin, and gu zheng — create masterful music on a broad musical canvas in an unforgettable and distinctive style all their own.

American audiences will witness the worldwide phenomenon in concert when 12 Girls Band embarks on a major 30-city U.S. tour in the fall of 2007.

5 out of 5 stars Magical.......2007-07-04

This is a wonderful, exuberant performance, full of joy and artistry. 12 Girls Band make their instruments dance, sing and rejoice in their music. Their celebration of traditional Chinese instruments through the fusion of the traditional and the contemporary breathes pure magic into the entire concert. One cannot help but be swept up in the majesty and beauty of the music created by these extraordinarily talented ladies. This is music to touch the soul.

5 out of 5 stars Your second must buy DVD.......2007-07-03

This is The Girls' ninth DVD. Unlike others, this one is filmed live in Shanghai in an open stage with a few songs by guess singers.

There is a mix of old songs and new songs. The new ones are mostly played excellently. The Bach's Concerto for Violin in A Minor outperforms the usual violin version. This will become another hit after New Classicism. The La Habanera (from Carmen) sung by Lila Downs is my favorite. The instruments do not seem to tie in well with My Heart Will Go On, perhaps due to the fact that the tone of erhu is too "sorrow" for the song, which requires a touch of romance and softness. Carnival is an old song but played in this DVD much better than other previous DVDs.

Overall, I would rate this DVD my second best after Miracle Live DVD (performed in Beijing, now out of stock) and is a must buy for new (as well as for returning) customers. Two other must buy DVDs include the Romantic Energy 2005 DVD and A Tribute to Wang Luo Bin DVD (for those who are familiar with Chinese folk songs). The Eastern Energy CD is also a must buy.

5 out of 5 stars Great in Shanghai and the USA.......2007-06-29

I have watched this production on PBS twice and again on the dvd. I consider this one of the finest cross-cultural offerings I have ever seen. My only disappointment was that there aren't notes about the various oriental instruments being played. An astounding production - beautiful music with beautiful girls in a beautiful setting.

5 out of 5 stars 12 or 13, that is the question.......2007-06-10

Brian Kohler wrote: "how can there be 13 girls in the 12 girls band? Thats craaazzzy!!!!"

Not so craaazzzy. There are 13 doughnuts in a baker's dozen and the Three Musketeers had four members, Porthos, Athos, Aramis, and d'Artagnon. Gotta learn to think outside the box.

But, more to the point, the Twelve Girls Band is outstanding, especially, I think, for their masterful renditions of Bach and Beethoven. I had my doubts that European classical and baroque music could be played appropriately on Eastern instruments, but they quickly disabused me of that idea. I felt the same way about Bela Fleck playing Bach on the banjo, but he proved that good music could be played by talented musicians on any instrument and made to sound as though it had been written for that instrument. Terrific DVD...highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars An Audio-Visual Delight!.......2007-06-09

Having enjoyed considerable time in Shanghai, and listening to and watching the Twelve Girls Band's performances on CD and DVD for several years, I confidently invite you to an audio-visual delight! This DVD provides not only an unforgetable late-evening visual tour of the Shanghai-Pudong area, but also a lasting exposure to some of the finest music available in the world today. These very attractive young ladies are incredibly competent musicians who employ ancient, traditional Chinese musical instruments to turn their renditions of contemporary songs into glorious listening experiences.

3 out of 5 stars Two Good Films - Three Forgettable.......2007-06-17

Powell and Loy are at their best in the last two films, which makes them great fun. I personally prefer I Love You Again to Love Crazy, which is slightly skewered and in some ways unpleasant - Powell's characterization of a cad being a bit too good. I Love You Again finds Powell genuinely loveable, and works better. The moment when he suggests he and his wife, Loy, recreate their honeymoon night, but do everything 'backwards' is as priceless as is Loy's cooling rebutal to his attempt at jumping the gun on the bedroom. Too, Gail Patrick and Jack Carson are more effective in their set-up roles. The best scene: a Lincoln-like Powell, pretending insanity to prevent a divorce proceeding, sets top hats sailing on a swimming pool, "Be free!"
The other three films are hopelessly forgettable.
If I Love You Again and Love Crazy were paired I would rate them at least a 4, possibly a 4 and half. But the rating plummets when they're connected to the others.
When will we be able to see some Powell movies without Loy? Life With Father demands release restored to its glorious colors, not to mention Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid. A set of the best of Powell's Warner Brothers films?

5 out of 5 stars All but one of the Powell/Loy films are now on DVD.......2007-05-09

This collection contains five titles currently not on DVD that were made starring the famous duo during the same time frame as their "Thin Man" series. With the exception of 1947's "The Senator was Indiscreet", this puts all of the Loy/Powell films on DVD. The extras described below are from a press release from Warner Home Video. The biggest let-down about this set is the lack of commentary for any of the films, but Warner probably figures with the amount of documentary material they put in the Thin Man Boxed Set, they would just be going over old territory. The films, in chronological order, are as follows:

Manhattan Melodrama (1934)
This is more of a movie with Powell and Loy than one about them as a couple. The focus is more on Clark Gable and William Powell, who play two orphans who grow up together but wind up on opposite sides of the law. Myrna Loy plays the woman that both characters love. Gable plays the gangster in this film, Powell the guy who goes up the political ladder. The melodramatic part is that as D.A. Powell's character wins a conviction against Gable's character, and as a result he is sentenced to death. Later, as governor, Powell must decide whether or not to commute his childhood friend's sentence. Powell is very good here at playing a more serious role.
Special Features:
· Comedy short "Goofy Movies #2"
· Classic cartoon "The Old Pioneer"
· Theatrical trailer
· Subtitles: English & French (feature film only)

Evelyn Prentice (1934)
This one seems to miss a step as far as plot holes go, but it is still above average. Powell plays a defense attorney who is also part detective, and whose heavy-duty work habits cause him to neglect his wife, played by Loy in the title role. As a result of this neglect, Loy commits an indiscretion with a playboy and ultimately figures into her husband's next big murder case.
Special Features:
· Comedy short "Goofy Movies #3"
· Classic cartoon "Discontented Canary"
· Theatrical trailer
· Subtitles: English & French (feature film only)

Double Wedding (1937)
This is a different kind of film for Powell and Loy. Loy plays high-powered businesswoman Margit Agnew who is unhappy to learn that her little sister is planning to marry vagabond Charlie Lodge (William Powell) who, since he lives in a trailer, is hardly in a position to support her. Margit tries to intervene, and in the end winds up with Lodge herself. The plot is thin, but the comedy is very good. This film was shot partly before and after the death of Jean Harlow, who was Powell's lover and Loy's good friend. Filming was suspended for awhile due to the tragedy.
Special Features:
· Musical short "Dancing on the Ceiling"
· Classic cartoon "The Hound and the Rabbit"
· Theatrical trailer
· Subtitles: English & French (feature film only)

I Love You Again (1940)
My favorite non-Thin Man Loy and Powell movie and showcases everything that is great about the chemistry the two had on screen. Powell plays stuffy and rich Larry Wilson, who, after a blow to the head, realizes he is actually confidence man George Carey. Wilson is just some alternate identity he assumed after he first got amnesia nine years before. Realizing he has a sweet deal in his wealthy second identity, Carey decides to clean out Wilson's finances and leave town. However, when Carey meets Wilson's estranged wife, played by Loy, he falls for her and decides to hang around long enough to win her back.
Special Features:
· Crime Doesn't Pay Series short "Jackpot"
· Classic cartoon "Tom Turkey and His Harmonica Humdingers"
· Theatrical trailer
· Subtitles: English & French (feature film only)

Love Crazy (1941)
Another excellent entry in the Loy and Powell series of movies. After four years of marriage, Stephen Ireland (William Powell) runs into an old girlfriend that lives nearby. The two end up just talking, but a series of comic misadventures cause Stephen's wife, Susan (Myrna Loy), to believe Stephen is cheating on her and she decides to divorce Stephen. Desperate to keep Susan, Stephen decides to pretend he is not in his right mind to draw things out. He does such a good job that everyone believes him - except his wife. There is some great physical comedy here by Powell.
Special Features:
· Classic cartoon "The Alley Cat"
· Audio-only bonus: Screen Directors Guild Playhouse Radio Broadcast
· Theatrical trailer
· Subtitles: English & French (feature film only)

Description

Nominated for two Academy AwardsÂ(r)* in 1979 and considered "one of Allen's most enduring accomplishments" (Boxoffice), Manhattan is a wry, touching and finely rendered portrait of modern relationships against the backdrop of urban alienation. Sumptuously photographed in black and white (Allen's first film in that format) and accompanied by a magnificent Gershwin score, Woody Allen's aesthetic triumph is a "prismatic portrait of a time and a place that may be studied decades hence" (Time). 42-year-old Manhattan native Isaac Davis (Allen) has a job he hates, a seventeen-year-old girlfriend, Tracy (Mariel Hemingway), he doesn't love and a lesbian ex-wife, Jill (Meryl Streep), who's writing a tell-all book about their marriage and whom he'd like to strangle. But when he meets his best friend's sexy intellectual mistress, Mary (Diane Keaton), Isaac falls head over heels in lust! Leaving Tracy, bedding Mary and quitting his job are just the beginning of Isaac's quest for romance and fulfillment in a city where sex is as intimate as a handshakeandthe gateway to true love is a revolving door. *Supporting Actress (Hemingway); Original Screenplay

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Manhattan.......2007-07-04

A follow-up to the critically acclaimed "Annie Hall," Woody Allen's "Manhattan" is the writer-director's most overt, visually poetic paean to the city of his birth. While weaving in recurring themes of frustrated love and alienation, what occupies center stage is New York itself, its various images and signposts made indelible by a Gershwin score and Gordon Willis's breathtaking black-and-white cinematography. See this sublime tribute to romance, urban life, and the only place Woody Allen has ever felt at home.

5 out of 5 stars Rhapsody in Grey.......2007-06-23

Manhattan is the quintessential Woody Allen movie. Annie Hall is funnier, but Manhattan is surely the one Allen movie which captures so beautifully the great auteur's concerns: the love/hate relationship with New York, the frustrations and phoniness of urban intellectualism, the all knowingness of modern city types who cannot enjoy pleasure since they are too world wise, the appeal of the innocent beautiful face, roiling and fizzing jazz music, the egotism and narcissism of men and women in contemporary society (this movie was from the 70s, but these themes are well made for Western urban social scenes today).

Manhattan is a movie for modern romance - where passions are washed over as soon as they are arrived at by the next wave of introspection; impulsive decision making; a new face at dinner, or the theatre. Isaac (Allen) is a classic protagonist for Woody Allen's movies - a sexually impulsive man with a razor sharp wit and a sarcastic, nihilistic answer to everything, an egoist who wants to do the right thing but is drowning in a sea of his neurosis. Allen's characters are like the filmic, comic incarnations of the great characters of of masterful novelist Saul Bellow - big hearted people awash in the modern condition, with their minds always on the big picture, the universal scape: hence the famous scene where Isaac meets Mary in the planetarium - the stars look down on their mortal, transient concerns (echoes of the final chapter of the Bellow novel 'The Dean's December'); then again in the school when Isaac confronts his friend Max for taking back Mary, the mistress he had let go - Isaac stands by a skeleton saying 'one day we'll be like this, I hope that when I thin out I'll be looked well on'. (This scene also contains the memorable Allen line - 'you think you're God' - 'well I have to model myself on someone'.)

What is life for? Manhattan poses this question beautifully. Some sort of answer occurs as Isaac makes a list towards the end of the movie whilst lying, psychoanalytical style, on the couch: Groucho Marx, the second movement of the Jupiter Symphony, Louis Armstrong's recording of 'Potato Blues', Swedish movies, L'Education Sentimentale by Flaubert, Frank Sinatra, Marlon Brando, Cezanne's apples, the crab at Sun Wo's (now no longer in existence). A valid Allen list, but slightly disengenuous - for Woody Allen, cultural epiphanies are a diversion. His real life purpose, which he has executed brilliantly over the years, is to fulfil that great mantra of Charlie Chaplin: life may be a tragedy in close up, but in the long shot it's a comedy.

5 out of 5 stars Woody Allen is Brilliant.......2007-06-11

Manhattan, by Woody Allen, is a showcase of the things that make Allen one of the most truly gifted-filmakers ever. Not only does he star in this intriguing movie, he also directed the movie, but wait there's more... Woody also wrote the script. The movie was released in 1979 and helped mark a true departure for Woody. Gone were the days of the quick and easy comedy (but not for long), while this movie heralded a more mature Allen and dramatic endeavors.

The plot is essentially about Allen as Isaac Davis, a divorced New Yorker that is dating a high schooler (an impressive Mariel Hemingway), who realises he is much more suited for his best friends girlfriend/mistress. Allen is his usually solid self, while Karen Allen is well-cast and suited for her role.

This movie is short - clocking in at under 100 minutes - and is filmed in balck and white. It is a great movie with stunning cinematography. Highly recommended. 5 Stars.

2 out of 5 stars Annie Hall's ugly sibling.......2007-02-18

A long time ago, the local art house theater where I lived used to run "Manhattan" in tandem with "Annie Hall". At first I thought Woody Allen used the idea of a man in his forties sleeping with a high school student as a way to be tasteless and funny. I thought he was using it to contrast it with the tasteful camerawork and the tasteful Gershwin orchestrations, but then I realized I was in denial and it pointed to a deeper, much more disturbing aspect of Woody Allen, as everyone knows. The cinematography is excellent and the Gershwin tunes are great, but you have to wade through a fair amount of misogyny while watching this movie. The main argument seems to be that adult women are either bitchy, man eating lesbians (the Meryl Streep character) or neurotic yet scathing and bitchy (that word again) intellectuals (Diane Keaton) and are driving adult men into the arms of unthreatening 17 year olds like Tracy-Mariel Hemingway. I also think there's a problem since the Woody Allen character criticizes "Yale" for his ethical lapses but Woody Allen-Isaac never asks himself questions about his own behavior. Meryl Streep's character did the right thing when before the movie starts, she leaves Isaac. Woody Allen-Isaac is out of touch with reality. I really wanted to like "Manhattan" and I overlooked a lot. But it's glaringly obvious what this movie's subtext is saying. Isaac wants everyone in the movie to change, except himself.

1 out of 5 stars Manhattan - a defective DVD.......2007-01-14

This is one of my all time favourite movies so I was thrilled when I received it as a Christmas gift. Imagine my disappointment when I discovered that this is a defective disc. It plays for a few minutes and jumps back to the start. This happened evrytime I tried to watch it. Other discs play without a problem on my DVD player so the fault lies definitely with this disc. I do not have the packaging or the packing slip which I did not keep as I did noy expect a product received from Amazon to be of this poor quality. I don't know how to return it to Amazon in the absence of the packing slip. Please help. Sincerely, Mandakini Tata

Five discs gather the first eight movies in the Friday the 13th series, plus a batch of behind-the-scenes featurettes. You can track the rise, fall, and endless resurrections of Jason Voorhees, from the original 1980 film to Jason's self-kidding trip to the Big Apple. Horror fans eat up packages such as this, but there's something odd about the deluxe treatment for a series that spotlighted atrocious acting, pitiful production values, and inane storytelling.

You'll spot a few future "name" actors in various installments: Kevin Bacon is morbidly dispatched in the first one. But in general, the dominant focus is how to kill horny teenagers, most of whom have gathered at Camp Crystal Lake in the misguided belief that the curse of the impossible-to-kill Jason has worn off. The first movie has a certain raw, crummy ability to shock, Part 2 is a dismal retread, and Part 3 actually features interesting use of 3-D, which doesn't translate to its flat DVD version. The fourth is boldly subtitled The Final Chapter, and we all know where that went, but it does have Crispin Glover doing a funky dance. A New Beginning and Jason Lives continue Jason's bad mood, maybe because the hockey mask doesn't fit right. The seventh chapter, The New Blood, stakes Jason against a worthy opponent (Crystal Lake's answer to telekinetic Carrie), but the result is the same. Part 8's subtitle, Jason Takes Manhattan, is wittier than the movie itself, as Jason menaces an unlucky cruise ship of high-schoolers bound for New York--where Mr. J fits right in.

Some of the films come with commentaries from directors or cast members, including heralded Jason performer Kane Hodder. Brief documentaries (ranging from five to 15 minutes) cover separate installments with amusing anecdotes, including interviews with Sean S. Cunningham, Tom Savini, and various actors. In another doc, actors speak of the fraternity of young actors who've been slaughtered by Jason over the years. A deleted-scenes section is skimpy and not very interesting, while the tricks of special-effects gore merit a film to themselves. It's a customer-savvy DVD box, even if the effect of watching a bunch of this stuff together is a little dispiriting. --Robert Horton

Description

DISC 1: FRIDAY THE 13th - The film takes place years after a young boy named Jason drowns in a lake while attending Camp Crystal Lake and shortly thereafter, the camp closes. Flash forward to the present, where the owner decides to re-open the camp and one by one, the counselors have mysteriously been murdered by an unseen person. PART 2 - The second installment picks up with Jason Voorhees, presumed dead from drowning years ago, exacting revenge on the innocent campers at "Camp Blood." Living as a hermit in the woods all these years, Jason witnesses the graphic murder of his mother and decides to wreak havoc on everyone at the camp - killing each camp counselor one by one. DISC 2: PART 3 - Vacationing teenagers take off for a weekend of relaxation at Camp Crystal Lake. Planning a few days of sex, drugs and rock-and-roll, they are in for a series of frightening surprises when a local motorcycle gang follows the teenagers back to their campsite, only to find a persistent Jason with an agenda of his own. Adorned with his trademark hockey mask for the first time in the series, Jason delivers non-stop chills and thrills as everyone on the lake must fight for their lives. Part III includes cast commentary by author Peter Bracke and actors Larry Zerner, Paul Kratka, Dana Kimmell and Richard Brooker. PART IV: THE FINAL CHAPTER - Jason resurfaces from a seemingly deadly massacre and returns to Camp Crystal Lake to a new set of prey. Starring a young Corey Feldman as Tommy Jarvis, it seems Jason has finally met his match in the 12-year old horror movie maven. Enlisting the help of a local hunter, Tommy and his sister must rely on one another to help defeat Jason, while also trying to avoid their own demise. DISC 3: PART V: A NEW BEGINNING - With Jason dead, someone new has begun a killing spree of their own, using Jason's M.O. and preying on inhabitants of a sanctuary. PART VI: JASON LIVES - Tommy returns to the grave to ensure that Jason is indeed dead. Instead of remaining dead, Jason is accidentally brought back to life by Tommy and now Tommy must stop all the mindless killing and make sure Jason dies for good this time. Part VI features commentary by director Tom McLoughlin. DISC 4: PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD - The film centers on Tina Shepard, a young girl with telekinetic powers who believes she drowned her father in Crystal Lake. Returning to the site as a method of supposedly helping her cope with her grief, Tina accidentally frees Jason from his watery grave, only to lead to more killing sprees by the man in the infamous hockey mask. Part VII features commentary by Kane Hodder and director John Carl Buechler and Part VIII features commentary by director Tom McLoughlin. PART VIII: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN - A graduating class of a local high school vacation on a cruise ship and unbeknownst to them, Jason is a stowaway on the same ship. Slowly killing students one at a time, Jason eventually sinks the boat, stranding the few lone survivors in Manhattan. Among those survivors, is Rennie, who believes Jason attempted to drown her as a child. Fighting for her their lives, Rennie and the other survivors must make sure Jason dies once and for all. A featurette "Tales From the Cutting Room," in which exclusive deleted scenes and footage is revealed for the first time. An 8-part featurette "The Friday The 13th Chronicles," which looks at the legacy of the films throughout their history, featuring cast and crew commenting on each film and why they appeal to audiences. Includes Adrienne King, Amy Steel, Corey Feldman, Kane Hodder, Lar Park Lincoln, Betsy Palmer, Tom Savini and directors Sean Cunningham, Tom McLoughlin, Rob Heddon, Joseph Zito and John Carl Buechler. A 3-part featurette "Secrets Galore Behind The Gore," which looks at the work of master make-up effects designer Tom Savini in Part 1 and Part IV and John Carl Buechler in Part VII. Includes rare and never-before-seen footage, drawings and stills illustrating the make-up techniques used to create Jason and achieve elaborate death scenes. A featurette "Crystal Lake Victims Tell All!" in which cast and crew from various films share amusing anecdotes. Includes Corey Feldman, Larry Zerner, Adrienne King, Amy Steel, Lar Park Lincoln and directors. A featurette "Friday Artifacts and Collectibles," which looks at props and collectables from the films. The theatrical trailers from all 8 movies except Part VI, which is represented by the teaser trailer.

3 out of 5 stars Paramount Shafts Us On All Eight.......2007-05-05

I love all of these movies(as cheesey as they are), but I don't understand why they haven't released the unedited versions . They should have released them simultaneously with the edited versions. But now they will never release them. 1)They've saturated the initial buyer market with crappy edited versions. 2)The geeks who would buy the unedited version even though they've already bought the edited version are few and far between. Weep now my friends, for you know I am right.(I have a degree in Business... but I have no job... So take it with a grain a salt)

4 out of 5 stars COOL BOX SET BUT SHOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER!.......2007-03-20

This box set includes the first 8 movies in the seemingly endless Friday the 13th series. The series has grown on me over the years. Jason is one scary mutha! I remember watching the beginning of part 6 "Jason Lives" and for the first time I understood that this series might never end! The moment when Jason looks right into the camera and they show a close up of Jason's eye. They pay a very amusing homage to the James Bond Films...It made me see this character in a whole new way. These are great lights out popcorn movies! I would have liked a restored version of part 7 in this set, but that should not keep you from picking this up.

3 out of 5 stars A review for the set and NOT the films themselves.......2007-03-01

From Crystal Lake to Manhattan features the first 8 movies in the series put out by Paramount Pictures. I know a lot of fans were excited about the set since the previous DVDs by Paramount had no extras except for trailers, which they didn't even have for the last 2. Jason Lives we only got a teaser.

As for the DVDs we get 2 movies per disc, which honestly I don't care for. The cases are the slim ones and personally I don't like them.

The movies themselves are cut for the R-Rating. Fans have wanted uncut versions, but Paramount still refuses. They claim poor sales, but yet they still put out a boxed set so why not just have them uncut?

The only differences are Friday the 13th Part III and Friday the 13th Part 6-8 have audio commentaries. While the tracks are pretty good it's really nothing to get excited about.

The bonus disc is fairly decent, but honestly it does lack a bit. The Friday the 13th Chronicles is a feature with interview about all 8 installments. The first Friday the 13th is the longest with about 22-min and rest run at about 14-min with A New Beginning only being about 5-min, which all it does is bring up the ending of The Final Chapter and it was left open for something different in Part V.

While the interviews are interesting the info we learn isn't anything special. Any movie geek will already know how the F/X was done. It's good to see some of the actors discussing the movies they did, but when all is said and done it's a good feature, but nothing amazing.

The 3-part feature Secrets Galore, Behind the Gore was interesting, but again this is all stuff most fans probably already knew. Like the Friday the 13th Chronicles a good feature, but nothing amazing.

Crystal Lake Victims Tell all seems like it was just stuff cut from the Friday the 13th Chronicles. So, once again good feature, but nothing great.

Bottom line is you see once and well odds are that is enough. Maybe in time you'll revisit, but it's nothing all that major.

Tales from the Cutting Room floor is probably the best feature, but poorly handled. When we see the extra gore for the original and 6th part we get a small box with the R-cut and another small box with the uncut.

Parts 2 & 3 have nothing, The Final Chapter has 2-cut scenes (not gore scenes). A New Beginning & Jason Takes Manhattan have nothing. Come Paramount I'm sure you could have dug up something. I know part 2 suffered some cuts and Part III has some cut gore scenes and some scenes deleted from the final cut.

The least they could have done is put a little something on their.

The saving grace is The New Blood. The quality is poor, but that is understandable since it wasn't reasserted.

My question is this, since Paramount obviously has the footage why not just put them in the films??? In particular The New Blood since the edits made do take away from the kill scenes. It would have been nice if they put them back in the first and 6th films as well, but even cut they don't take away from the death scenes where as the cuts really put a damper on the death scenes in The New Blood.

We also have Friday artifacts and collectibles, which isn't anything really all that good and finally the trailers for all 8 films except Jason Lives, which only has the teaser just like the original DVD.

Overall the set is decent plain and simple. What could have been one of the best DVD sets turns into something that is average at best. I'm sure die hard fans like myself will still be some what pleased, but at the end of the day it's nothing to get excited about.

If you have the original DVDs upgrading isn't really needed. If you have the extra cash and there isn't anything you really want then I would say give it a shot. But if you have the original DVDs I would say save the money and buy other DVDs.

For those who do not own the films I would say buy the set, since it will be cheaper.

3 out of 5 stars I think I was ripped off..........2007-01-18

A few people have brought this up already, but there are only the edited versions of these films. Sometimes, they don't even show the deaths of certain characters, they just don't show them for the remainder of the movie which just leaves you feeling like there's something missing. I truly hope they put out a complete and unrated version set of this collection. These movies were the source of some sleepless nights as a kid and I'm still fascinated with series. Of all the horror icons, Jason was one of the greats.

The picture quality of this set is pretty good, decent packaging, so-so extras. Overall, just an incomplete collection.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome...from a biased pov........2007-01-12

These have always been my favorite maniacal slasher movies. Ever since I was a kid. We used to always sneek into the local theater to watch them when they were released. Great times - great movies. I hopped on the opportunity to get the first 8 on DVD in a set, since I didn't own any prior to this. A little bummed that they didn't put all of the 'cut' scenes back in for the set though. Would've been nice to have unrated versions of each movie.

I enjoyed the Muppets as a child and still get an occasional guilty pleasure out of watching them. This isn't their best movie, but it has its moments. Save yourself a few bucks and go buy it @ Wal-Mart for $5.00!!

5 out of 5 stars Can't get enough of the Muppets!.......2007-05-06

What a wonderful movie that the whole family can enjoy. It was a good film filled with all of the Muppet characters that delighted us from so long ago! Good plot about getting their musical opened on Broadway. I think you will enjoy it too!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Family Movie.......2006-03-30

Loved it in the theatrical release - looking forward to viewing it again and again!

4 out of 5 stars The Muppets on Broadway .......2006-01-29

In this 3rd movie of the Muppet series, they are hitting the road, and going to New York, but while they are taking Manhattan, I sure hope they return it when they are doen with it. This is the last Muppet movie that the late Jim Henson did, the series returned after his death with the Muppet Christmas Carol. But also imange what would be like for the Muppets to disband, and well you have this movie, which may not be the best one they have done. The Muppet perfromers for this movie are Jim Henson, Frank Oz, Dave Goelz, Jerry Nelson, Steve Whitmire, and Richard Hunt. When the movie begins, the Muppets are perfoming in a colege theatre of thier show "Matthan Melodies" and they are just about to graudate for college. But while Kermit the Frog is onstage, when the show is over, the rest of the Muppets decide that thier show is good enough to take it to the next step, and that is broadway in case you have just joined us. But they then Kermit can't believe what they decided, but gets talked into it, so they head to broadway. Now they need is a producer, and looking through the ads, thier first one (Dabney Coleman) seems intersted, but wants the Muppets to pay him $300 each, I guess what he does get is they are just about flat broke, so how do they plan to get thier show on broadway? They keep trying with servel other producers, but one by one, they keep closing thier office door, which leads Kermit to get frusted, and he says that the Muppets depend on them to much. And with barely any money, they stop off at a restuarant, and while Kermit is placing an order, and having a chat with the owner/manger/etc (Louis Zorich), the rest of the Muppets decide to decide to stop depending on Kermit so much, so they they make a plan to go out and find jobs out of town, and of course Kermiet meets and becomes best friends with the owner's neiece Jenny (Juliana Donald). But before they go, they tell Kermit they have gotten better offers but out of town.

5 out of 5 stars The best film in the universe!.......2005-11-06

This movie is da bomb! It's FUNNY! The songs are excellent! And the wedding was great! Here's the description on the back of the box:Broadway bound, the Muppets take Manhattan by storm in this magical musical about breaking into show business! Fresh out of college,Kermit,Fozzie and the entire cast of Kermit's musical "Manhattan Melodies" head for the Big Apple with plans to turn their small play into a big hit! All they need now is someone to produce their show! But when no one in town will even meet with them,it's up to Kermit to believe hard enough for all of his friends that the show WILL go on! Family entertainment has never been more fun than in this comedy marking Frank Oz's solo directorial debut. P.S. I didn't get this from Amazon,I got it on eBay for 7.50 with free tax. Sincerly,Richard G. from Connellsville P.A.

In the breezy Maid in Manhattan, a maid in a top-flight hotel (Jennifer Lopez, Out of Sight, The Wedding Planner) chances to dress in a guest's clothes just when a handsome political candidate (Ralph Fiennes, Schindler's List, Red Dragon) walks in. Naturally, he's bowled over and pursues her; he's initially drawn to her gorgeous good looks but soon comes to appreciate her honesty and common sense. Of course, she can't let him know that she's only a maid, and various high jinks ensue--it's all pretty formulaic, but lurking in the edges of this glossy, brainless romance are a wealth of sly turns by Natasha Richardson and Amy Sedaris (as callow socialites), Bob Hoskins (as a dignified butler), Stanley Tucci (as Fiennes' exasperated campaign manager), and many less familiar faces. All help to give Maid in Manhattan the life and texture that has been processed out of the main characters. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars Your typical girl movie.......2007-05-25

Cute, completely improbable chick flick. Perfect for when you want to watch something mindless.

3 out of 5 stars Sugary goodness overload........2007-04-01

Maid in Manhattan starring Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Fienes is so fluffy and morally good it makes me sick inside. Surprisely Lopez is not bad in this role, she is quite likable but her character can be a little too preachy and judgmental towards Fienes's political character. And boy Fienes is a nice piece of eye candy, what a hunk! This is one of those movies you just watch once 'cause it's simple, predictable, and not very memorable. Some of the scenes are just way too long, it's like get on with it already! If you are a fan of romantic comedies then this fluff is for you.

1 out of 5 stars NOT JUST BAD BAD FOR YOU! So Sugary sweet it makes you sick to your stomach. .......2007-03-23

On the surface Maid In Manhattan it seems like a light romantic comedy with a predictable and sweet love story. However the numerous racist and sexist stereotypes throughout the undertones of this Cinderella tale will make any viewer of color extremely bitter. Better have a couple of barf bags around while watching this movie. You're gonna need them.

Jennifer Lopez is a maid in a four-star downtown Manhattan hotel. (Stereotype #1 about Latinas) She dreams of becoming a hotel manager (Stereotype #2 about Latinas- all work in service jobs). A single mother (Stereotype #3) she struggles to work during the day and take care of her 10-year-old son and is supported by her mother (Stereotype#4) who works in a rundown Spanish restaurant uptown (Stereotype#5) While cleaning the room of a rich British woman, she decides to try on some of her clothes. Conveniently, a rich senate candidate comes to the room and mistakes her for the Hotel guest. He's smitten by her charm and her looks. She's attracted to his loot. So to bag the rich guy she and her friends (also minority stereotypes) go along with the ruse and more supposedly humorous hijinks ensue. The flimsy story disappears and the movie slowly changes from a vehichle for Jennifer Lopez, Actress into a vanity project for J. Lo, Superstar. We get numerous shots of her walking around the city in designer clothes, Eating at fancy restaurants and trying too hard to look hot while courting a bored Senate candidate. The movie comes to a climax when the ruse is revealed. She and her friends at the hotel are fired and her dreams of becoming a Hotel Manager are crushed.

But wait-Prince Charming(tm) is riding down in his white limo to save her. He's had such a wonderful time with her that he's fallen in love(tm). He tries to talk to her in the street, but she gives him some spiel about not knowing who she was when she was a maid and now caring about her. This leads to him seeking her out at her new job. While she's working at another hotel, where he's conveniently he's holding a press conference, he finds her and professes undying love for her. They kiss and we get a montage of pictures showing them living happily ever set to J.Lo's painful butchering of Diana Ross' classic "I'm Coming out." She's married to the senator, getting the management job at the hotel and then one of her saying they're still married a year later. Excuse me I have to go puke. (I also have to reorder the barf bags; no telling when I'm going to need them for the next romantic comedy)

Words can't describe how much I hate this movie. It's an insult to women and minorities. Maid in Manhattan insidiously hides numerous racist and sexist messages under a beautiful front of pretty actors, lavish locations and luxury goods. The movie secretly tells women of color they can't find success without those essentials for success: expensive designer clothes, perfect make-up, beautiful hair and a rich White man to save them. Worse, it tells women to lie and manipulate to get what they want. Because we all know working hard takes way too much time from shopping. Movies like this aren't bad; they're bad for you. Watch too many movies like these and you'll get your mind warped.

It seems like the producers were trying to make a "Pretty Woman" type movie for J.Lo but they didn't understand the execution of J.F. Lawton's brilliant concept. In an attempt to copy Pretty Woman, Maid in Manhattan tries to update the fairy tale by just using minority characters in most of the roles and fails miserably. There was a lot more under the surface of the Richard Gere/Julia Roberts vehichle than most people understand. Pretty Woman wasn't an update of a fairytale it was a satire poking fun at the fairy tale. Lawton was making fun of all the fairy tale stereotypes by using L.A's downtrodden as the characters in the story. He was making the comment that to get to happily ever after both the man and the woman have to learn to value each other as equals.

The acting here is horrible. No, scratch that it's WRETCHED. Jennifer Lopez is terrible. Terrible singing, terrible acting and she didn't look too hot in all those designer clothes either. She has no chemistry with Ralph Finnes and adds no dimension whatsoever to her character. Throughout the movie she's just J.Lo superstar playing dress up. After seeing this movie and Enough I can tell you Jennifer Lopez's acting career is in serious trouble. She's gone from an actress who showed tremendous potential Selena, Out of Sight, and Anaconda to an egotistical over-the-top ham with no presence and no personality. Ralph Finnes is horribly miscast in the role of the Senate candidate. I couldn't believe he was from New York with that British accent that kept popping up in every scene. An actor of his caliber deserves better than this syrupy slop. Bob Hoskins must need some rent money because a fine actor like him deserves better than this. Natasha Richardson and Amy Sedaris chew on scenery while waiting for their paychecks to clear. Tyler Posey (Parker Posey's son) is the only actor to give a good performance here. I'd love to see more of him in the future.

Please, Please IF YOU VALUE YOUR DAUGHTER'S SELF-ESTEEM DO NOT LET THEM WATCH THIS MOVIE! Get them the Wonderful Bend it Like Beckham, Akeelah and The Bee, and Disney's Mulan. The older crowds can Get Muriel's Wedding, J.F. Lawton's Pretty Woman or his hilarious Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-02-06

This is one of the sweetest Cinderella type movies I have ever seen. Very romantic!

2 out of 5 stars A not very believable couple.......2007-01-26

This is the classic Cinderella-like story. A nice plot, well constructed and certainly entertaining. In the tradition of the Revolution Studios, this is a film that obviously seeks to break boundaries and stereotypes, a very praisable purpose, but unfortunately the Ralph Fiennes-Jeniffer Lopez coupling, to me, ends up totally cold and chemistry-less. However it is fun to watch.

3 out of 5 stars Songs are good, videos are bad.......2007-06-28

Songs are very good (as expected, 4-5 star), music is OK (3-4 star), the videos are so boring (no star).

4 out of 5 stars Great songs but production could have been better.......2007-06-28

I absolutely love Chloe!! (and her deep blue eyes), but many of the videos are poorly shot. She has her hair blowing in her face often, and it looks like there was only 1 or 2 cameras taping her. Some of the scenery is nice; some of her outfits are nice too, BUT... not all of them. Overall if you like Chloe you will still enjoy this DVD and hearing the songs, but the budget for this DVD was undercut.

5 out of 5 stars Chloe Rocks!!!.......2007-06-20

I received a copy of this DVD when it was only available at the Celtic Woman concerts. I didn't know that
Chloe had a DVD, so a very generous fan was kind enough to send me a copy.
This DVD is a must for any Chloe fan! It is nice to see Chloe in her own clothes, instead of the lovely gowns that she wears at the concerts. The DVD is shot in Ireland, and the scenery is beautiful!!! I can't recommend this
DVD highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars Little Manhattan..........2007-06-04

Little Manhattan brought back a slew of memories for me also. This movie brought to the fore the feelings that I had had (as a pre-teen & teen), but just didn't have the voice to express my feelings to the females with whom I was enamored. Now, I didn't cry as our young man did in the DVD, but I did understand (and could relate).

I wouldn't relive those days even if you paid me! I would recommend this flick to all pre-teen and teen you men as course 101 in the art of expressing one's feelings to females - but the fact is, that with the emotion that we call love, there is no 'art' to it. If you wear your heart on your sleeve, chances are it's going to be broken - be ready - if you can.

To anyone that reads this - have your pre-teen and teenage sons watch this. If they say, "That will never happen to me!", just smile at them and say, "If you say so..." and leave it at that!!

4 out of 5 stars First Crush Film Grows on You.......2007-03-13

When I first started watching this Netflix rental, I almost stopped the
DVD after 10 minutes because the movie seemed silly and broad. But I
stuck it out, and am I glad I did. The movie got steadily better, and
by the end I felt I was watching a near excellent film. It uses the old
Wonder Years narrative technique and tries to be a little too cute at
times, but the ending was a bit surprising and very touching. It stars
the boy from The Bridge To Terabithia, but no big name actors. It received good reviews, but had little to draw in the average viewer.
If you enjoy movies about childhood that aren't meant for children
(though this is suitable for children age 9 or up), then I think you
will enjoy this film.

5 out of 5 stars Little Manhattan.......2007-01-31

I absolutely loved this movie! It was a great family film and had a great story. I would recomend this movie if you like watching romantic comedys. I loved it!

4 out of 5 stars Great Family Film.......2007-01-15

Get the kids, get the popcorn, get ready for a great movie the whole family can enjoy. Tell your friends about "Little Manhattan" too.

You'll laugh, cry, and enjoy every minute of it.

I give it two thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful .......2007-01-13

Although the two main characters of Little Manhattan are children, this is not a kids movie. It's a film for anyone who remembers the joys and pains of your first love, the magic you feel when you connect with someone for the first time in your life. This, in summary, is a film for everyone, and a delightful one at that.

Woody Allen was going through his off-screen scandal with Mia Farrow when Manhattan Murder Mystery was produced, so Diane Keaton was brought in to fill the role intended for Farrow. The reunion of Keaton and Allen only improves this already enjoyable Allen comedy, since they're so comfortable with each other's neuroses that they're delightfully convincing as a married couple who suspect their neighbor of murdering his wife. Actually, it's Keaton who obsesses about the possible foul play; Woody just wants them to mind their own business. But pretty soon they've recruited their friends (Alan Alda, Anjelica Huston) as amateur sleuths, and the movie turns into a Nancy Drew mystery for sophisticated Manhattanites. With a typical abundance of Woody Allen witticism and some memorable comic suspense, this engaging throwback to vintage Hollywood mysteries is guaranteed to please even the most noncommittal Woody Allen fans, and the Allen-Keaton chemistry is, as always, a genuine pleasure. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars The Unfunny Woody Allen.......2007-01-09

This is a truly pathetic excuse for a movie. The dialogue is rambling and often incoherent (Keaton looks high much of the time and moves a hand constantly toward her nose), the story is confusing and unconvincing (and has to be explained, twice), the camera work is labored, and the artisie illusions and music are oh, so obviously "in". Worst of all, the film isn't funny. It should be no surprise that Woody Allen soon moved into a much darker genre of film making to occupy his later years.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable movie.......2007-01-06

MANHATTAN MURDER MYSTERY is a pleasant film that can be enjoyed even by people who are luke warm about Allen and his films. The pace is a bit slow and the "mystery" is not all that exciting but Allen's gags and take on relationships are as usual entertaining and Keaton and Allen make a convincing married couple. The other parts are also well acted. Not a must see but an OK way to spend a snowy evening.

5 out of 5 stars Diane Keaton & Woody Reunite!.......2006-12-31

With public popularity swaying away from Woody Allen, only Diane Keaton could put the wheels back on Woody's reputation. Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993) is a return to the entertaining, laugh-out-loud, slapstic comedic romps we all loved in Woody Allen's Funny Films like 'Take the Money & Run', 'Bananas', 'Play It Again, Sam', 'Sleeper', 'Love & Death' and 'Annie Hall'. The coup de grace in making this film most memorable was the brilliant casting-against-type of Jerry Adler (Mr. Wicker on 'Mad About You') who would later dazzle us as Herman 'Hesh' Rabkin in 'The Sopranos'. Truly one of his greatest triumphs in Funny rather than Intellectual comedy!

Leonard, Toronto, Canada

4 out of 5 stars Woody in (Almost) Top Form.......2006-11-05

Reuniting with Marshall Brickman, who co-wrote the two films that are considered Woody Allen's masterpieces (Annie Hall & Manhattan),
Annie Hall brings us a funny whodunit that also marks his reunion with Diane Keaton. "Manhattan Murder Mystery" was reportedly inspired by a murder subplot that was featured in the original version of Annie Hall. If you've seen Annie Hall, than you know that there is no murder subplot. It was cut from the film entirely. Anyway, Allen and Keaton play a married couple Larry and Carol Lipton. They, of course, live in New York and seem to be basically playing older versions of Alvy Singer and Annie Hall; Larry is a neurotic, film lover and etc. Anyway, one night they meet their neighbors Paul and Lillian House (Jerry Adler & Lynn Cohen); Larry doesn't particularly like them (he's sick of having to look at Paul House's stamp collection), but Carol does...Everything takes a strange twist though when, the next day, Lillian House is dead. Oddly enough though, Paul doesn't seem saddened by it at all which rouses Carol's suspicions. When she mentions to Larry that it might've been murder, he writes it off as crazy. But their friend Ted (Alan Alda) sees this as being logical enough and helps Carol to solve the mystery. Although, mystery might be stretching the word a little bit. Every theory I had while the film progressed turned out to be right in some way and, personally, I didn't really care if it was murder or not because the film was entertaining and funny enough to keep me from caring. The film is funny and entertaining (Allen, Alda, Keaton, and co-star Anjelica Huston all deliver big laughs), it's still not perfect. It drags at times, seems to go on a little too long (odd since it's only 108 minutes). If you're a fan of Woody Allen, however, than you should definitely like it because it's an entry in his filmography that surpasses some others.

GRADE: B+

5 out of 5 stars Woody at his funniest!.......2006-09-01

My wife and I saw this movie in the theatre. We liked it so much we went to see it a second time in the theatre. Then we bought it on VHS. Now I bought it on DVD. This movie is very well written. The character developement is outstanding.

It's a true credit to Woody that I'm not sick of this movie.
