Just what the world needs: an all-musical roach revue. What worked as an MTV short film does not work as a feature-length movie. Intelligent cockroaches with lives of their own may seem outré and amusing on the small screen, but are disgusting and eventually boring when we have to spend 80 long minutes with them. Scruffy Jerry O'Connell is the Iowa farm boy who moves to the Big Apple and rents a filthy, bug-infested flat. Turns out those bugs are his only friends. Also turns out that the animated vermin are a whole lot more interesting than the human cast. This is just silly and gross enough for adolescent boys, or those with adolescent tastes. --Rochelle O'Gorman

5 out of 5 stars Compulsory For Anbody Thinking of Using.......2007-06-27

I was a little taken aback by the film's "PG" rating. Drug use is treated frankly, there's some strong language and fleeting nudity. But then I thought why shouldn't young people of a certain age see this film. They are the most vulnerable in being ensnared into the drug culture and maybe they should heed the film's cautionary message. I also found the timing of this film's release, 1971, interesting because it comes at a time when the drug culture was in full bloom and we were only a few years removed from "Easy Rider". The selling point is, of course, Al Pacino who is nothing short of amazing as the small-time thief who goes from pecking to full-blown addiction. I thought this was more Kitty Winn's picture, though. Her character could be anybody's daughter who for reason's unknown takes up a serious drug habit. The film is essentially a love story between Pacino and Winn's characters. I couldn't decide whether the love between the two brought a little light to their dismal straits or that they were enabling each other into a worse addiction. For obvious reasons the film's message is timeless because, unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world. Pacino and director Jerry Schatzberg would later collaborate on another seventies gem, "Scarecrow", that is well worth checking out.

3 out of 5 stars Pacino Can't Save a Tired Script.......2007-06-26

I can't help but compare this film to Drugstore Cowboy, another drama detailing the life of heroin users. The comparison does not favor Panic. While Drugstore Cowboy feels like a story written by someone who really knows what it's like to be a junkie (it was), this tale feels like it was written by an intellectual who had never touched smack but thought it would be cool to write a story about strung-out people. The whole thing feels affected, stale, acted out. You can't help but love Al Pacino, overacting in an endearing way in the earliest days of his career. And Kitty Winn, the actress who plays Pacino's partner in crime here, is cute and charming in a Margot Kidder/Karen Allen kind of way. But actors' charms aside, the film is bland and sterile. Skip this and go watch Drugstore Cowboy, which will make you feel like you are really inside the world of a group of heroin users.

5 out of 5 stars Al Pacino's first starring role, a stunning debut........2007-04-08

Thirty-six years (1971) after it came out it is finally being released on DVD. This stark and grim film was heavily criticized by critics mostly because of its brutal and honest drug content. Filmed on location in New York City, THE PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK, marked the real beginning of what was to become the amazing career of one of the greatest actors to ever grace the screen the legendary Al Pacino. Great movie that I am happy is finally making its way to video. The movie had been released in Europe for some time but never in the United States that is until now. I will definitely be purchasing this underrated movie classic that for years has become among die-hard Pacino fans one of his most sought after movies ever. To the studio that finally thought about releasing this movie after so many years of waiting I thank you kindly.

2 out of 5 stars The Boredom in Needle Park.......2007-02-12

This film drags along at snails pace, without any discernible plot. Although occasionally one is hinted at, it never seems to unfold. The "highlights" are a couple of extended, graphic heroin injection scenes, and otherwise two hours of muddy, low register mumbling of street jive and drug talk. After an hour it became a struggle just to sit through, but I forced myself to keep watching, convinced it was all leading to 'something'. Unfortunately it wasn't, and nothing happens.

Pacino himself is not remotely convincing as a down and out addict, and he doesn't fit in at all with the junkie crew. The lone saving grace is Pacino's creepy brother Hank (played by Richard Bright), who convincingly portrays a career burgular. His scenes and character draw you in, but unfortunately he vanishes midway, and we're back to dragged out scenes of Pacino and his girl slumped in bedrooms, high and staring vacantly into space.

Maybe this film will be of some interest to the Pacino-completist, but my personal advice would be to steer clear. And this is coming from both a Pacino fan, and a fan of 70s American cinema. Otherwise if you still want to proceed, a shot of heroin may be necessary before viewing.

5 out of 5 stars Pacino and Wynn.......2007-02-05

A true (*****) star movie is one that: 1.) Makes you think 2.) Makes you cry 3.) Makes you shudder 4.) then think again.
Ordinary People, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Goodfellas, Shawshank Redemption, and "I Want To Live", are five star movies.
This IS a five star movie.
The writing is rough, the characters are flawed, camera angles are off, yet this film is gripping to the core. I first saw this film on AMC when AMC was a pay channel. My first impression was,... how can a film end this way?
On second viewing,... what a masterpiece.
Pacino is at his (RAW) best. Wynn,... how can anyone act in this manner if they truly aren't like this in true life?
Moving and thought provoking.

i really forgot just how much i loved this movie, this was MTV's first movie and they did a very great job in creating this! this was a cult classic movie, and one i really had to add to my collection!

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2007-04-02

From back when Mtv was till about the music and sick humor! LOved it then and now.

4 out of 5 stars Possibly unique.......2006-05-19

I agree with Alex Meyer's earlier review that there is no other movie quite like "Joe's Apartment." The roaches sing and dance, and engage in dialogue with Joe. In fact, the most important roach characters, the ones with the biggest speaking parts, and so on, get mentioned in the credits. I don't know of another film where an insect gets an actual film credit. :-)

So if you're squeamish about cockroaches, this movie isn't for you, as they're quite realistically done, there are literally thousands of them scurrying around a lot of the time (can you spell Raid?), and they're really the stars of the whole movie. The fun-loving roaches that infest Joe's New York apartment are the biggest (or littlest) party animals in the Big Apple, and their musical numbers and speaking parts and antics are a major part of the movie. The more "advanced" humans definitely take a back seat. :-) The roach animation is very convincing.

I note Robert Vaughn has a little role and it's good to see he's still working. I remember him from a one-man stage performance he did a couple of decades ago where he played Abraham Lincoln for which he received some well-deserved accolades. And Don Ho, of "Little Bubbles" song fame, plays the local gangster. I almost didn't recognize Don as it had probably been 20 years since I'd seen him on screen. Jerry O'Connell as Joe and Megan Ward as the beautiful girl he carries the torch for are perfect choices for their parts, and both turn in fine performances. All in all a fun movie with a possibly unique concept. My hat's off to Geffen for taking a chance with what was probably a very risky movie.

5 out of 5 stars best MTV movie ever.......2006-03-20

IF you ever had ROACH PHOBIA this is the movie to get rid of yur fear, thnks alot i watch this movie every week .....really good movie

1 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 stars? What are you guys on?!.......2006-01-20

This movie was represented best by roaches because it's about as vile and annoying as that bug.

If you're looking for side-splitting laughs and even a little T&A you've come to the wrong place. I think I chuckled twice through the whole movie. That's it. Those roaches were d**m annoying. I would have torched the entire apartment building just to kill those sons of b**ches.

Anyway, this movie is boring, stupid, not funny and the roaches were lame. Oh, yeah, the "acting" sucked too. I'm glad Jerry Connelly is actually doing something worthwhile now. I might have given this movie more stars if the girl actually got naked but nope.

Good credentials abound in this 1970 adaptation of Bill Manoff's hit Broadway comedy. Buck Henry wrote the screenplay, and Herbert Ross (The Turning Point) directs the surprisingly funny pairing of Barbra Streisand and George Segal as, respectively, a semi-literate prostitute and an egghead. Streisand and Segal turn out to have excellent complementary styles (both are good at playing incredulity), and while the film is not always as witty as it could be, scenes are crisp and highly entertaining. --Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars One Loud Hooker Plus One Insecure Writer Equals a Match Made Only in the Movies.......2006-09-14

After three big-budget Broadway-based period musicals in a row, Barbra Streisand obviously made a conscious career decision to convey a more contemporary image onscreen. She succeeds in spades in this often hilarious 1970 comedy adapted by Buck Henry from a hit Bill Manhoff play and directed by Herbert Ross. Streisand plays Doris, a loud-mouthed fetish hooker who claims to be a model and an actress. She gets thrown out of her apartment when her neighbor, a nebbish bookstore clerk and aspiring writer named Felix Sherman, reports her clandestine activities to the landlord. This causes a confrontation in which she is convinced he's gay and seduces him in a surprisingly graphic scene (at least surprising for Streisand). Another fight ensues causing them to get kicked out of his apartment. The rest of the film is mostly their bickering as they travel from one apartment to the next and carry out their improbable, Pygmalion-like opposites-attract romance.

In the same year he made two greatly underrated films, the mature "Loving" and the manic "Where's Poppa?", George Segal makes Felix a lovably insecure schlub and provides great chemistry with Streisand in her first non-singing role. They have a great scene in the bathtub where both are completely stoned as his fiancée and her parents walk in, and he has a funny scene where he pretends to be the TV to help Doris get to sleep. For Streisand's part, she wears a hysterically tacky negligee, dances in a go-go cage, appears in a soft-porn flick called "Cycle Sluts" (we only hear the riotous audio - "Where are you putting THAT?") and says the "F" word (unfortunately cut out of the DVD version though it's obvious when she says it). It's not her best screen performance, but it's one of her funniest. Henry's sharp dialogue and Ross' quick pacing help considerably in making this an enjoyably vulgar romantic comedy. The 2001 DVD had no extras other than three trailers, none for this movie.

4 out of 5 stars A Fine Owl and One Cute Pussycat!!!.......2006-03-09

After seeing this movie I became amazed that it had taken me such an effort to find a copy of it to rent anywhere. It is a very funny, warm and intelligent piece about friendship that I would recommend to anyone. With great performances by both George Segal and Barbra Striesand. Believe me when I say that all I wanted to do after I saw this film was take a Bubble Bath with Barbra.

2 out of 5 stars What's happening to DVD's of the 70's????.......2005-02-09

I was really shocked and disappointed to find this DVD had been cut... this was one of the best films I saw in the 70's. I also discovered that another great movie, "Goodbye Columbus," has been edited down to a PG since its release on DVD with the original nude scenes deleted. I'm encouraging people NOT to buy or rent these DVD's and to write the studios and complain... it's bad enough that Columbia and Paramount have ruined their own product, but they didn't even have the courtesy to notify buyers that they weren't purchasing the original films. I agree with another reviewer here... we're being robbed.

5 out of 5 stars Bad Barb.......2004-11-25

This movie is absolutely adorable! Barbra Streisand is a way better actress than singer! In this movie, she's a prostitute who teaches a tight-cheeked man about freedom and love. This movie is better than Pretty Woman!

2 out of 5 stars I'm with the critics -- DON'T CUT IT!!.......2004-11-18

Enough reviewers have groused that the verdict is in -- The Owl and the Pussycat WAS a classic that rocked, until the idiot Babs and the Columbia scissor boys got hold of it. If I were Buck Henry, I'd be angry. The majority of people who would be interested in this film ALREADY SAW IT in our relative youth. That means we saw Babs nude and we heard the "F" word that had everyone talking, as she tells off a bunch of moochers. More than a few of us need to give Columbia a piece of our minds. This is unconscionable. The nude scene was NOT destroyed, it was BLOCKED from the collar bone down (she was laying in Barney's bed, asking "Whatdaya think?" just before Felix joined her. It still exists in the vault. I own a copy with the "F" word intact, and in context, it only makes it funny. COLUMBIA, NOW HEAR THIS: GIVE US THIS FILM IN ITS ORIGINAL FORM, OR GIVE US NOTHING!!

Somewhere in the world, there are probably people who don't understand why Mike Myers's character, Wayne Campbell, is funny--which is too bad. Granted, the laughs are often cheap and silly, but there's no one who can embody a comic character and riff within that character the way Myers does. Wayne and his pal Garth (Dana Carvey) were fixtures on Saturday Night Live before the unexpected success of Wayne's World, which is about what happened when they tried to take their local cable-access show citywide. This time, they want to stage Waynestock, a mammoth rock festival in their little Chicago suburb, even as Wayne copes with girlfriend Tia Carrere's interest in record-company exec Christopher Walken. For extra fun, Garth gets involved with the babelicious Kim Basinger. Yes, the humor is scattershot and the plot is lame--but you'll find yourself laughing nonetheless. --Marshall Fine

4 out of 5 stars A MUST SEE...OH YES! A MUST SEE.......2007-03-28

Comedy writers agree you don't write a joke on a joke. Wayne's World 2
is an exception. The movie works because Wayne (Mike Myers)( and Garth
(Dana Carvey) are among the very few comic actors who get laughs every time the camera points there way. A more likeable comic duo you'll rarely see. They are unpretentious and honestly likeable--like bad little
kids who broke your window but turned it into a joke. So how can you get mad?
Ok, you can say the movie's dumb. It is pointless. It goes for cheap laughs. True.
But when did you ever get a full
belly laugh from stoic Charlton Heston?
I rest my case.

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the first but still manages to deliver several great laughs........2006-10-04

Altough not as good as the first on Waynes world 2 still manages to give you some of the same laughs you got from the first one. The main problem though is that its just not as original as the first one was. But don't let that fool you its still a good movie thats worth owning. I bought both of the movies in the complete epic boxed set and I have to say there some of my favorite comedy movies. Its just great to see Wayne and Garth again. I recommend buying both Waynes World 1 and 2.

2 out of 5 stars Yawn.....are we having fun yet?.......2006-09-03

I love Wayne's World. I love Wayne's World 2 more. NOT!!!!! This sequel is nowhere near as much fun as the original. "Fun" hardly makes an appearence in this flick. The jokes are weak; basically they just show us that they ran out of the good ones. It may be the change in directors, I don't know. All I know is this movie is not worth watching. It starts out like you would want a sequel to, and it stays that way.....for about 5 minutes. I turned it off about half way through. Thank God I only rented this one.

5 out of 5 stars "I had to beat them to death with their own shoes".......2006-04-25

This is more great comedy from the minds of the cast members of Saturday Night Live. Dana Carvey and Mike Myers are among my favorites, so Wayne's World has always been a favorite of mine.

In their ode to die-hard 80s hair band fans, Wayne and his faithful sidekick, Garth, set out on another adventure. This time around, Wayne begins to question his mortal purpose. He is soon visited in a dream by a naked indian man who leads him through the desert sands to Jim Morrison. Morrison tells him that the purpose of his life is to put on a concert.

Of course, there are obstacles... Namely, Bobby (played by Christopher Walken), the smooth-talking and suave record producer in charge of managing Cassandra's (Wayne's girlfriend) budding music career.

Garth has issues of his own, though. He has just "gotten his first pubes", so he is eager to become familiarized with the ways of the woman. A snake of a woman, played by Kim Basinger attempts to take advantage of his innocence and loyal nature. The scenes Dana Carvey shares with Basinger are hilarious.

This is just a funny and ridiculous movie. With a good cast of actors, the story leads from one funny scene to the next. Carvey and Myers are great together...

Highly recommended for fans of SNL comedy.

4 out of 5 stars Great follow up to a great movie..........2006-01-18

Wayne's World 2, starring Mike Myers as Wayne and Dana Carvey as Garth is the short awaited sequal to the smash hit of 1992.

Wayne and Garth have moved out of the parents basement and now have their own place across town, still doing their low budget local access TV show and still worshipping every rock musician out there. Wayne and his girlfriend Cassandra, from the first movie are still an item only now she has a manager trying to help her get her career started.

This time Wayne has been sent a message from the spirt of Jim Morrison, of the Doors who tells Wayne he must put on a concert in Aurora and find the meaning of his life. Wayne takes the message very seriously and even flies to London, England to find Del Preston who used to be friends with Jim way back when. Now our duo must deal with putting on their TV show, raising enough money for a permit to hold the show Wayne titles "Waynstock" and deal with Cassandra being taken away from him by her manager. Not to mention Wayne has to prove himself worthy with Cassandra's father and Garth has a close encounter with a beautiful woman, Honey Hornee' (Kim Bassinger) who takes an instant liking to him but may be up to more then just a one night stand.

Overall the movie is on par with the first one. All the funny one liners and sight gags and situations fly by us with the same familiarity that the first gave us. We jump right back into the universe we left a year ago and it's like we never left it. A classic mock Kung Fu fight between Wayne and Cassandra's father with dubbed English while they talk is a priceless moment. As well as Wayne, Garth and two friends dressed up in outfits that the Village People music group wore spying on Cassandra and her manager only to be spotted by them and having to perform as said group in a Male only bar.

The only thing holding this movie back is that it seems too familiar, like we did this all before. There is enough original in this to make you forget the first but too much was taken from the first to make it more like a differnet version of the same. It still holds it own though quite well. Many more stars this time around play bit parts like for instance Drew Barrymore, Jay Leno, Heather Locklear, Metalica and Rip Taylor having parts that are just randomly thrusted upon us. Some play themselves while others playing differnet parts. Of course we can't forget the late and great Chris Farley who I must admit seemed a bit out of place in the part they gave him, but always cool to see him any time.

While some of the jokes were recycled from the first movie, Ie) the alternate ending and the new guy stealing Wayne's girlfriend from him while Wayne gets jealous all the while.. there are some great new gags. I loved the moment towards the end when Wayne stops at a gas station for directions and some bad old actor is giving Wayne some sad story about the street he is looking for only for Wayne to say he wants a better actor for this part and they suddenly change the actor before our eyes to someone better. Some new jokes didn't work like Wayne and Garth being lifted on their backs at the concert they are at and after they are placed down a lot of weird items are being sent in the same mannor to the security guards. That was probably one of those better on paper then it actually turned out to be moments that should have been left on the drawing board. It is also a bit dated, jokes that were funny in 1993 may seem a little silly now. For instance the Jurrasic Park moment but that's to be expected in these type of comedies. Usually popular pop culture of the time will be spoofed and if anything it brings back fun memories of yesteryear.

Overall if you enjoyed the first film, there is no reason not to get this one. It has all the same actors we loved, even a cameo from Ed O'Neil reprising his Glen role from the first. It may not have the same originality and charm the first did, but it is a welcome addition to any fan of a good comedy, follow up to a good film or something that the whole family can get a good laugh to.

The DVD has commentary from the director and about 20 minutes in little tidbits from the cast about moments in the film. More then worth it, especialy at the more then affordable price.

Check out the adventures of Wayne and Garth one last time as they put on the greatest concert in Aurora, IL history. You won't be sorry you did.

Lesbian love takes a kinky turn in Mango Kiss, a romantic comedy about role playing of all kinds. Lou (Michelle Wolfe) and Sassy (Daniele Ferraro) are best friends who move to San Francisco, where they're delighted by the abundance of lesbian lifestyles. Sassy can't wait to sample the bounty, but Lou just wants Sassy--though when she gets her wish, complications begin. Mango Kiss features a host of quirky characters, ranging from tops and bottoms in the bondage scene to a couple that has replicated a 1950s male-female relationship. Fortunately, the movie doesn't just coast on quirk--the writing and acting are strong, though the story loses momentum towards the end. Mango Kiss also doesn't take itself (or the role-playing) too seriously; its satirical humor gives the movie some spark--and a couple of steamy sex scenes don't hurt either. Also featuring Sally Kirkland (Private Benjamin). --Bret Fetzer

    3 out of 5 stars A Playful Film.......2007-05-04

This film can best be described as playful, cute and artsy. It's kinda like those lesbian experiences or fantasies we all had as kids. It's definatly a great film to eat junk food and get drunk to and even if your not drinking you'll still laugh your head off! Although it is not the best film and you may not watch it as much as the others, it will always be nice to see one that just celebrates us lesbians rather than the "we gotta keep it in the closet" stuff. It may be a straight world out there but we can still have the same enjoyment of playful romantic comedies.

    5 out of 5 stars playful drama.......2006-06-30

It is hard to find lesbian films that veer from the norm. Having low budgets and time constraints, they often are taken as falling short of mainstream art. However working within those parametors, the movie was great. Role playing, comedy, and truthfulness added depth to this project that was 4 years in the making. Yes, the situations were over exaggerated, sometimes campy but the actors brought to life the essence of this story. We all role play--we just call it by a different name. In the "real world" people do experiment with sex- do we label that kinky? If we like to wear jeans and baggy pants does that signal being a dyke/butch? If we are in love with someone but hide behind our feelings are we being truthful to ourselves? The chemistry between Lou (Michelle Wolff) and Sassy (Daniele Ferraro) was evident, sexy, but yet serious. The film proved credible by bringing these 2 out of character in the last scenes. In making mistakes they could at least salvage a relationship instead of walking away with regrets. Watch the behind the scenes footage and you will appreciate the characters. Hats off to Sascha Rice.

1 out of 5 stars Run and hide.......2006-04-25

I have a list of lesbian movies that I am interested in buying over the next few months or so. Fortunately a friend of mine bought this movie before I had a chance to consider it as it was quite frankly the biggest load of crap I have ever seen.

Look, I must admit, I am not one for stereotypical butch and femme relationships so for starters that was a HUGE no-no for me. That just added to the fact that just about everything else in the movie was badly done.

Harsh maybe, but if like me you live in the lipstick lesbian world and loved movies like Saving Face, this one is definitely not for you.

    2 out of 5 stars uhh.....not what I expected.......2005-11-11

I have seen worse, it's a little weird! When I first watched it I thought it was good because I hadn't seen very many lesbian films, now that I have I don't think it is very good. It's okay but lets put it this way I watched it once and it's been on the shelf ever since!

    5 out of 5 stars A Must See.......2005-08-16

A passionate playful wonderful artistic piece. While it may not be for those uptight about kinky sex it is a masterpiece for lesbians who appreciate playful sex and fun dramatic characters with a creative plot. A little fun never hurts anyone and this is just a fun, creative piece to get one's juices flowing. If you're looking for a more serious film this is not for you, but every bit of this deserves at least a 4 star rating no matter what your tastes are.

    Description

Do the crime, do the time. But what happens during the long years spent behind the walls of San Quentin? The penitentiary's new yard captain wants to make those years a time of rehabilitation rather than punishment. But not everyone's buying it. "He's just another copper to me," snarls inmate Red Kennedy. Humphrey Bogart portrays Red, continuing his climb to stardom in this brisk film that's one of a string of Depression-era works combining gangster-movie elements with a Big House setting. Studio mainstay Pat O'Brien plays Steve Jameson, whose carrot-and-stick reforms begin to change Red's thinking. An inmates' strike and a scripture-quoting con who swipes a rifle are among the troubles Jameson faces. And Red is another as he reverts to his old ways and makes a violent break for freedom.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Standard tough prison melodrama, competently done..........2007-01-13

In "San Quentin," Bogart returns quickly to a life of crime... Trying without success to add some depth and meaning to a role which offered little of either, Bogart is a convicted robber sent to San Quentin and assigned to a road gang as a rehabilitated step instituted by the prison yard captain, Pat O'Brien...

When Bogart is maliciously informed, through the efforts of the bad Barton MacLane, that O'Brien has less than honorable intentions toward his sister, Ann Sheridan, he breaks out and shoots O'Brien, though not seriously...

When he finds that he has made a mistake, he decides to give himself up, but...

"San Quentin," though far from one of Bogart's best roles, is almost always included in his film retrospectives as a favorite choice of his fans...

3 out of 5 stars Cliched Prison Drama.......2006-08-13

"San Quentin", a 1937 Warner Brothers programmer, is a cliched story set in an around the prison of the same name. Pat O'Brien plays an army officer assigned to the prison to establish discipline and reform using army methods. Barton Maclane plays the guard he replaces who resents him, Humphrey Bogart plays the small time hoodlum who "only needs a break" to reform and Ann Sheridan plays his sister who O'Brien falls for. Joe Sawyer plays the hardened criminal. All of the actors are typecast although Bogart's role is more sympathetic than usual at this time and accordingly offers him a bit more range. The film is fast moving in typical Warner's fashion but the script and direction are not sharp enough to arise above the cliches. The film's scenes of prison life are cursory with no real sense of desperation or monotony, so well depicted in better films like "20,000 Years in Sing Sing". The melodramatics of the routine plot bog the film down. This probably was the first film which gave Ann Sheridan a leg up the ladder and she introduces a good song "How Could You" in a nightclub scene. She has a warm contralto and puts the song over with great charm and personality.

The quality of the film print is first rate and the DVD comes with many extras including a documentary about the advent of the prison fim, a worthwhile commentary about the film itself, not that it really warrants it, an excellent Porky Pig cartoon satirising the gangster and a Warner Brother's blooper reel from 1937. The blooper reels are always interesting if you know your Warner's films.

If the DVD is purchased as part of the Warner's Tough Guy Collection, it is good value but otherwise, there are better films in this genre available.

More than a quarter-century after Herbert Ross directed Richard Dreyfuss to an Oscar and made an indelible cinematic impression out of Neil Simon's The Goodbye Girl, a 2004 television remake starring Jeff Daniels and Patricia Heaton proved winning and funny in its own way. Daniels plays Elliot, an actor who subleases a New York City apartment already occupied by a dancer and single mom, Paula (Heaton), and her daughter (Hallie Kate Eisenberg). Focused on his stagecraft, Elliot is irked about sharing housing with strangers, and while Paula feels the same (to great comic effect), both come to lean on and finally love one another over time. The underrated Daniels is very good here, nuanced and thoughtful, and his work performing (as Elliot) in a stage production of Richard III is quite entertaining. Heaton is equally strong and frequently stirring; anyone with doubts about this film's casting will quickly forget them. --Tom Keogh

The Goodbye Girl is a contemporary turn on Academy? Award-nominated Neil Simon's classic film about a dumped-on divorcee and an aspiring actor who become unwilling roommates in a New York City apartment.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Great Movie!.......2006-07-23

Tis movie is so much better than the 1970's version with Dreyfuss and Mason. Heaton and Daniels are a much better matching couple. These people are so fitting and right for these roles of a struggling and a struggling house wife/ dancer! Thank you Richard Benjamin for a great movie and great entertaiment.

5 out of 5 stars a TV movie that you just might really enjoy.......2006-04-03

This made-for-TV film is one that I felt instantly inclined to pick up on DVD when I came across it on Amazon, due mostly in part to the recognizable and talented cast. Patricia Heaton appeared in a couple movies and landed some guest spots on television series before her breakthrough on "Everybody Loves Raymond," but this is one of the few films in which she stars. Many sitcom actors experience some difficulty transitioning to film, but Heaton has an apparent ease on camera and performs this role quite well, despite the fact that it is so different from her gig as Debra on "Raymond." In fact, any fan of that show who is familiar with Heaton's tough-as-nails, take-no-crap-from-anybody role may be a bit humored to see her in this movie as a character who is bawling over a guy within the first five minutes, but for her it works just fine. Heaton has a definite knack for humor and sarcasm in her acting, which gives her a nice distinction and gives her onscreen success.

"The Goodbye Girl" is a simple, sweet story of a single mother with a wise-beyond-her-years daughter and a reputation for falling for and being dumped by several actor types. As the sweet but undeniably cliched plot continues, another actor enters her life and shows a definite potential to establish a family with Heaton and her child.

There is not a whole lot to the storyline and therefore not much to really comment on in that aspect, but the cast was well chosen and gives the movie a nice touch. Jeff Daniels is a genuinely funny actor with many humorous scenes here, and young child starlet Hallie Kate Eisenberg (remember those infamous Pepsi commercials?) maintains those classic out-of-control curls and river-deep dimples to give a believable portrayal as Patricia Heaton's 10-year-old daughter. Eisenberg has grown quite a bit since doing all those movies as a tiny little girl, but she works very well alongside Heaton and seems to be doing just fine as a preteen star. It is also nice to see Heaton playing such a large part with a child actress. Of course, she played a devoted and loving mother on "Raymond," but in that show we actually don't see her interacting that much with her kids--it is mostly suggestive that she is with them a lot of the time. This movie has her and Eisenberg interacting all the way through, and the fact that they are more like friends than mother and daughter gives them both some good improvisational material to work with.

In short, "The Goodbye Girl" is a movie worth renting or buying if you like the cast and would enjoy seeing a lighthearted and entertaining family story.

5 out of 5 stars BETER THAN OTHER REVIEWS HAD POSTED!.......2006-01-08

I really enjoyed the show. It was a very funny and romanitic movie. The acting was very good and thescript was fine for television. I like Daniel over Dryfuss anyday. It is definetly worth a watch.

5 out of 5 stars Some Like It Others Don't!.......2005-12-11

Okay I like this movie and found it almost as good as the original movie but I want to say that I thought it was mean and bratty for the previous reviewer to say that all of the other reviewers were crazy! I like this movie but I can understand and accept that not everyone liked it as much as I did and after all as they say everyone's entitled to their own opinions so just accept that and get over it! By the way I also disagree with the guy who said Hallie Kate Eisenberg was ugly. I personally think she is one of the most adorable child actresses ever!

5 out of 5 stars Everyone Else Is Crazy!.......2005-10-11

I owned the soundtrack to the musical version of this on CD and liked it! So when I heard of a tv version I had to watch it! And I fell in love with it! I didn't know if this was going to go on dvd or not, so when I saw this at walmart I had to get it! I love it! All the other people who watched this movie and didn't like it were out of their mind! I like it much better than the 70's version!

5 out of 5 stars Great comedy movie, classic.......2006-08-14

This is a great classic from the early 90's as Joe Pesci's popularity was rising (after the leathal weapons 2 and 3). Joe plays Louie Kritski, son of Big Lou Kritski, owner of 27 slum buildings. As a birthday gift, Big Lou gave Louie his own building. With this, came all of the building violations. Mandolyn smith osbourne plays Naomi, a new lawyer for the housing athourity, and someone Louie would "like to get to know". Well, Karma caught Louie quick as his tenents and Naomi sucessfully prosecuted him for the violations and he is sentenced to 120 days in a 5th floor apartment of his building. No repairs to his appartment can occur unless the rest of the building is fixed as well. The movie takes off from here, Pesci, use to money and comforts, has a hard time adapting to the harsh environment. His Tennents, on the other hand, have a little fun with Pesci, taking him as a sucker a few times as well as parting his prized correvette out. In the end, Pesci has a change of heart, and stands up to his dad as his own man with his own plan. He turns out to be a nicer guy. Unfortunately, the movie ends pretty quickly, Almost rushed, but still ok. Gotta laugh as he drives away in his Corvette, or is it? Again, a former staple of cable stations like TBS, USA, And WGN, this movie is worth a viewing, and a good classic for the collection.

    5 out of 5 stars Super-Sized Comedy.......2006-02-05

I have always gotten a kick out of Joe Pesci; one of the best actors of comedy in the 1990's. With that quirky, whiny voice and that funny little walk, Pesci is one of those unique comedians who adds just the right touch of humor to his character. Pesci is no different in 1991's "The Super," an absolutely hilarious film from beginning to end, with emotional touches underlying the film. Though a tremendously funny film, it also touches on the reality of the inner city and the conditions that many people have to live in. Most of all, it gets to the heart in that the film shows that you may live in a place you hate and are around people you may despise, but when difficult times come up, you realize how important they are to you. You grow to have respect for people and places you may not have had respect for in the past. You live in certain situations long enough to where you feel a part of it and want to protect it. All these things happen in life frequently and it is wonderfully portrayed in "The Super." After only a few viewings, "The Super" has become an instant comedy classic with my family and me. It has got to be one of the most underrated comedy films around.

It is the apartment complex everyone dreams about. With an awesome view of the scummy streets of New York, filthy toilets and sinks that overflow in disgusting liquid, heating that won't work and electricity that shorts out, what more could one ask for? Why should the residents complain of being cold, the smell of urine in the hallways, rats in the rooms and doors that won't open or close as needed? After all, this place is a charmer!

Meet Louis Kritski (played by Joe Pesci), the pint-sized son of a rich and mean slumlord. Louis is a swift-talking wise guy, who walks like a miniature ape and is under the delusion that he can impress the ladies. Louis was fortunate enough to inherit his father's "wonderful" complex as a birthday present. It is all his to do nothing with, while all the while greedily grabbing up the rent money from all the residents. Ever since he was a boy, Kritski's no-good father (played by Vincent Gardenia) always told him that when you own a piece of property you do nothing with it because if you give an inch, they'll take a mile. Therefore, Kritski's father forbids him to be merciful to the needy residents in the complex.

Unfortunately, Louis's neglect of the building and it's people leads him straight to court where he is ordered to live in one of the apartments until he gets the complex up to code. Now Louis is having hands-on experience of what the residents are going through. His sink "burps," his toilet is flowing over with scum, the only chair in the room is falling apart and he cannot play his radio because the electrical socket doesn't work. He is living in a neighborhood where cars such as his cherry red Corvette are stripped down to nothing, convenience stores sell bread that's 500 years old, the best liquor he can get is a small bottle of cheap wine and he learns quickly how to duck from bullets. Louis deals with the constant noise of the residents from the loud music and partying, to family arguments over a bike, to angry residents pounding on his door. Needless to say, Louis could never have much of a social life under the circumstances, especially with his girlfriend.

The residents and people from the street all try to get the best of this feisty, uncaring slumlord to create some very memorable comedic scenes, from tricking Louis out of cash in a card game, to giving him false hope and taking advantage of him on the basketball court, to enticing him to join in the partying noise in the complex. The neat thing about this film is that we get a variety of people of different backgrounds. We see Louis "drop in" on a very agitated and freaked-out Hispanic family, get firm lessons from a wise talking African-American kid named Tito with a drug-dealing father and we see Louis complain of too much noise to a religious preacher who is trying to block out the rats in his apartment.

The residents of the complex and the comedic adventures and lessons Louis has with them somehow lead him to take a second look at himself and try to become a better person. But is he doing it for himself or for all of them? Actually living in the shoes of the residents in his complex may have triggered something in this heartless slumlord after all. But when Daddy-dearest steps in and threatens to do unthinkable damage to Louis's complex and the residents within it, Louis must stand up to his father in a way he has never done before and perhaps make the biggest choice of his life.

"The Super" is an all-around very entertaining and funny movie that will never leave you bored but only your sides splitting. Pesci was perfectly cast for this role as Louis, and I only wish he had made more films like this. Just looking at his facial and body expressions makes you want to laugh at times; especially when he appears in his ridiculous basketball uniform of knee high socks, sweatpants and a hooded sweatshirt and attempts to egotistically take some street basketball players to school on the court. Also worth noting is the humorous scene of him dancing and partying with the residents to MC Hammer's "U Can't Touch This." Pesci has definitely done some of his best work in the film and it is sure to be fun-filled entertainment for all. I must also mention that the R-rating is for language; just a word of warning for those with younger kids.

Being from the Bronx and working for a landlord who is the
owner of many such buildings, and strangely enough, VERY
similar to Louis Sr, I can appreciate the comedy aspect from
both sides. And it really is closer to the truth than most
people think. Unless of course, you live in one of these
buildings. I don't recall what Borough this is supposed to
take place in, but New York City is full of them.
Very funny movie. Pesci and Co. are all outstanding.

Joe Pesci's role in 1990's GOODFELLAS won him a few Oscars. Before GOODFELLAS,Pesci had roles in LETHAL WEAPON 2 and BETSY'S WEDDING. After GOODFELLAS,he did HOME ALONE where he was a burglar who, with Daniel Stern, terrorized the star,MacCaulay Culkin. In this film,Pesci is Louis "Louie" Kritski Jr. who receives an apartment building for his birthday from his mom and dad Louis "Big Lou" Sr.(the late Vincent Gardenia). But Louie is tried for and convicted of property neglect and was originally sentenced to one year in the county jail. The presiding judge changes the sentence to 120 days of house arrest in Louie's gift building. He reluctantly complies with the court order to make the necessary repairs against Big Lou's wishes. Big Lou willed Louie his other buildings upon his passing(Big Lou owned 26 other buldings). Big Lou threatened to cancel his bequests to Louie if he made the repairs. Obviously,Big Lou lets nature take its course and does not believe in repairs and rejuvenations. Big Lou's heart is broken when he finds new lights and notices Louie giving his tenants portable heaters(the building's boiler is broken). Louie bought the heaters with his dad's company credit card. "They(the company) called for authorization!",quipps Big Lou. When Louie moves into apartment 5A of his building he makes a few friends without plan. They are Tito(Kenny Blank),a young black kid who lives with his grandmother Leotha. Marlon(Ruben Blades) is always helping Louie when he needs it. Naomi Bensinger(Madolyn Smith Osborne),who seems to be a friend,is a prosecutor who checks up on Louie from time to time to make sure he's complying with the court order. Louie asked Naomi in one scene to witness the distribution of the heaters. She said it was "more of a gesture than a solution". The building was about to be destroyed via explosives. Louie threatened to throw the perpetrator off the roof, where they both were. Louie is bailed out by his father but he and Marlon waste no time in repairing and painting, delighting the tenants who were previously upset.

This simple comedy by British filmmaker Mike Leigh (Secrets and Lies) concerns the reunion of two women friends from university days who try hard, although awkwardly, to rediscover their early closeness. They succeed beautifully and experience a series of chance encounters with old friends and lovers whom they once knew together. Katrin Cartlidge (Breaking the Waves) and Lynda Steadman are outstanding, playing their characters via flashback in their grungy, early 20s as well as their more polished, contemporary selves at age 30. Following the complex ambitions of Secrets and Lies, Career Girls almost looks like a holiday for Leigh, but it is no less the rich product of his now-famous process of symbiotic rehearsal and writing. The film is also graced by some of the most delicate passages of remembered love between two people seen in a long time. --Tom Keogh

Career Girls is about a weekend spent between two old college roomates who finally reunite after 6 years apart. Both shared a flat in London during University before moving out after graduation. One stayed in the city and another moved into the country but they continued to exchanged letters to maintain contact. Although they change into career girls on the outside their reunion is spent reconnecting just how the same as always they may be on the inside. It's film depicting the passage of youth, the endurance of friendship, our true selves that never go away, and just how much fun two can have with Ms. Bronte's books as an oracle. I do agree with another reviewer about the flashbacks circa the 80's ... and the music on the soundtrack. Hard to believe it is now over 20 years since that era! No matter what ... the cliche is true ... the more things change the more they stay the same.

5 out of 5 stars Textured, Rich, and Poignant .......2005-09-11

Mike Leigh's Career Girls (1997) draws viewers out of a steady diet of inconsequential plotting and formulaic storylines. Among the more fascinating stories involve protagonists who are also antagonists to themselves and others.

Young psychology student, Annie (Lynda Steadman), seeks a place to live and answers an ad provided by Hannah (the late Katrin Cartlidge) and Claire (Kate Byers). Annie's flatmates, both reading English at the local Polytechnic school, play a divination game with an old Penguin copy of Bronte's Wuthering Heights to pass the time. Hannah, who appears to have numerous tics, possesses a rapier wit and a developed intuition while managing a stormy relationship with her alcoholic mother. Eventually, Hannah and Annie become close friends, finding between them a tighter bond as a result of shared experiences. The tough and brash Hannah protects the waif-like Annie, self-conscious as a result of a case of dermatitis, most apparent on her youthful visage.

The story, told in a series of flashbacks, pushes viewers to enjoy the narrative ride rather than piecing together what happened when. As a result, Leigh establishes his ability to tell a sophisticated and poignant story about friendship, one that lasts because their affection for one another remains when the other is no longer present. Leigh does not dwell on a sentimental storyline largely because he is intelligent enough to suggest that friendships survive as a result of a history of common joys and genuine conflicts. Annie finds herself attracted to a man, Adrian Spinks (Joe Tucker), whom Hannah is dating. Ricky (Mark Benton) suffers from unrequited love when Annie turns him down and Hannah is quick to remind her that she has no cause to decline men because of their appearance. Leigh's meditation brings us back to Aristotle's argument on friendship, that friendship between two persons exists when both are equal and care for the other's well-being. The conversation in the Chinese restaurant is particularly moving.

The DVD offers the original trailer, widescreen, and full screen format.

Good news Mike Leigh fans, this movie is now scheduled to be released on DVD on September 6, 2005 according to Amazon!!

The movie is an excellent one. Sometimes (unjustly) considered one of Leigh's lesser works it functions both as comedy and drama as it looks at the reunion of two friends from college several years after they have graduated and have been trying to find their niche in the world. Told in a series of flashbacks and in present time it shows how he characters have grown over time while many of their vulnerabilities remain.

A must for any and all Mike Leigh fans.

5 out of 5 stars Muz Bronte, Muz Bronte! Another Great Film From Mike Leigh!.......2005-02-08

With 1996's "Secret's and Lies," British director Mike Leigh had his first taste of what passed for commercial success in the United States. That amazing and powerful film (which has finally just been given its DVD debut in the US) won Leigh his usual praise from critics, but with the five Academy Award nominations it earned (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Original Screenplay) Leigh was able to garner a smattering attention from a public who had never heard of him or his movies before.

"Career Girls," which was Leigh's follow-up to "Secrets and Lies," may SOUND like it was an attempt to go mainstream, but it isn't. The plot is fairly simple. Two women, who were roommates and best friends in college, are reunited 6 or so years later and after an initial awkwardness eventual find the friendship they had once shared. It is a times funny (sometimes uproariously so) sometimes sad, sometimes even heavy. But it is always compelling and, ultimately very moving. Despite this decription this should not be dismissed as a mere "chick flick."

"Career Girls" did not duplicate the commercial success of "Secrets and Lies," and its timing of release meant that it has more or less fallen through the cracks in terms of getting DVD release. So, if ANYONE reading this has ANY influence on the powers that be, please do what you can to correct that. With the renewed attention Mike Leigh is getting for his second Academy Award nomination for Best Director (for 2004's "Vera Drake") now is the time!

4 out of 5 stars Ms. Bronte', Ms. Bronte'.......2002-08-02

Out of all of Mike Leigh's brilliant films, "Career Girls is probably my favorite. This is a wonderful character study and look at the friendship of two English women during two different periods in their lives. In the film we meet Hannah (actress Katrin Cartlidge) and Annie (actress Lynda Steadman) former college roomates, who are having their first reunion in six years. These two are a regular pair of Mutt & Jeffs. Hannah is tall, and thin with a caustic wit that is full of spit and vinegar. In contrast Annie is petite, shy and quite mousey in pesonality. As one of the characters is quoted as saying "together they would make the perfect women".During the film we listen to their converstions as they travel about London remenicing, eating and even humorously go hunting for a flat. It is during all this, that the viewer is treated to flashbacks of how these now, smartly dressed, well coiffed, 'career gals', forged and created this important friendship in their relative youth. We are shown that back in the late eighties/early nineties they were a scruffy, punky looking pair, who went through thick and thin together. The movie shows us how in their outward appearance they might have changed drastically, but on the inside they pretty much remain the same people (if not a bit more mature and cynically seasoned in nature).Actresses, Katrin Cartlidge and Lynda Steadman are marvelous in the two lead roles of this film. Both are totally believable playing these two interesting, yet imperfect women at different ages.Mike Leigh has written and directed a lovely drama/comedy, which really touches the heart as we get to know the characters(past & present). The film also has a great soundtrack that features the '80's/90's pop music of The Cure. This is a really wonderful film that will move most movie fans!

4 out of 5 stars James Caan As You've Never Seen Him Before.......2005-11-13

James Caan plays the live-in superintendant of a New York Apartment building who never leaves the premeses. His existance has been whittled down so that he has no experience of reality apart from the building. As the movie progresses, we learn that as a young man he was assaulted by his mother and her lover, leaving him with brain damage and loss of memory. It turns out that the apartment "owner" is none other than wicked stepmother who stole Caan's inheritance (the apartment building), his name and, in essence, his life.
This is an unusual movie in that James Caan is not the masterful, decisive figure that viewers have come to expect. Here he portrays a confused, vulnerable, and ultimately enraged loser, who finally learns how his life came to be wasted through the machinations of others. His portrayal of a man who slowly realizes the enormity of his loss and identifies the agent of his destruction is brilliant. This is an interesting movie for anyone but if you are a James Caan fan this is a particular gem.

    4 out of 5 stars Woah wasn't expecting this..........2005-03-26

This is one of the most unique movies I have ever seen. It is twisted and once you think it can't get any stranger it just keeps going. Its kinda a murder mystery kinda a phsycological-Suspence. Jennifer Tillie is in it. Sciamma is the directer is and the camera angles and effects really go well with the theme of the movie. Go see it!

4 out of 5 stars AND THE WALLS COME TUMBLING DOWN.......2005-01-05

JERICHO MANSIONS is a complex, oftentimes frustrating, thriller set in a strange apartment complex in some large city. James Caan, in a very good performance, plays Leonard Grey, the withdrawn manager who never goes outdoors. One can tell from the beginning that there is more than meets the eye to this gentle, but strange, individual. The complex is peopled with a wide assortment of eccentrics: Genevieve Bujold, in a fierce and unusual performance, plays the owner of the building, who obviously has no like for her manager; Jennifer Tilly brings demure sexual steam to her role as the wife of a cheating husband who gets his head bashed in with a hammer. The other tenants include a lonely woman who loves birds and a Spanish woman with an abusive husband. Who killed the philandering husband? Trust that nothing is as it seems in this well directed little chiller, and the ending, though a bit confusing, is not one you may expect. From its weird and atmospheric cinematography to its bright color schemes, JERICHO MANSIONS is not your typical mystery, but one that may leave you wondering what you have just watched!
