Innovative handyman Red Green is proud to announce his first DVD, and while admitting that he doesn't understand the technology, he chooses to mark the occasion with a tribute to duct tape, that endlessly useful substance he terms "the handyman's secret weapon." In the course of the program, Green (ably portrayed by Canadian comedian Steve Smith) demonstrates projects that are one part Rube Goldberg and many parts duct tape. Some of the gags are elaborate and inspired, such as a bit about a pontoon boat you can make by stripping the heat ducts from your house ("don't forget to replace them before winter"), taping them all together, and adding an outboard motor as a finishing touch. The humor of all this is an acquired taste, and those who just don't get it would probably have to be duct taped to the television to watch Red Green. But if you enjoy this sort of offbeat humor, Duct Tape Virtuoso Deluxe is a treat. How else could you learn to make construction equipment from a stepladder and a Thigh-Master? Who else would teach you how to make a paddlewheel riverboat by taping together parts of a junked van? Only Red Green, who also thoughtfully provides tips on using all those empty duct-tape rolls to make holders for the many bottles in your "beer cellar." Bonus material on the DVD includes a trip to the actual largest duct-tape plant in the world (which Red proudly notes is "right here in Canada"), and a segment shot at a gathering of fanatical Red Green fans who show off their own duct-tape creations. --Robert J. McNamara

Here are three films that couldn't and wouldn't have been made at any other time. Contrary to popular belief, the history of Hollywood permissiveness, what filmmakers could "get away with" on screen, is not a steadily rising graph from puritanical early days to the party-hearty present. In the early 1930s, a national mood of shock over the stock market crash and impatience with Prohibition licensed a relaxation of the movie industry's self-censorship policies. Sexuality--always a driving force in movie plots and characterizations, even when repressed--became a more explicit presence, with costuming that sometimes pushed the envelope for exposure of epidermis and dialogue that could be shockingly blunt.

Baby Face (1933) was made at Warner Bros., the golden-age studio with the grittiest style and the most street cred. The gutsy Barbara Stanwyck stars as a young woman from a factory town who hops a boxcar to the big city and sleeps her way to the top--a progress famously indexed by a camera ascending floor by floor outside a Gotham office building as she trades up, one corporate suitor after another. No other major-studio film was more explicit about sex as a tool and a commodity, yetBaby Face is curiously less sexy than any number of movies that weren't so outspoken about it. This TCM collection features both the theatrical-release version familiar for decades and a recently rediscovered preview version that is markedly superior, runs five minutes longer, and includes more sexual liaisons. It also happily lacks an absurd final scene that got tacked onto the release version to explain how the heroine learned to be content with a modest lifestyle.

Red-Headed Woman (1932) is arguably the raunchiest movie Jean Harlow made at MGM (though not as raunchy as her scenes in Howard Hughes' 1930 Hell's Angels). Unlike Stanwyck in Baby Face--a proletarian heroine grimly selling herself to beat capitalism and the patriarchy at their own game--Harlow's character brazenly relishes both the sex and the posh life it wins for her. The lion's share of this sardonic comedy, scripted by Anita Loos and an uncredited F. Scott Fitzgerald, focuses on Harlow's seduction of her married boss (Chester Morris) and the havoc she wreaks in his upper-crust world. Charles Boyer has a role (his first Hollywood credit) as a French chauffeur who knows how to give satisfaction, and the film's air of breezy ribaldry even allows the star a casual flash of bare breast.

The rarest item in the collection, the 1931 Universal version of Waterloo Bridge, has long been unseen because MGM bought the film in order to do a 1940 remake (starring Vivien Leigh) and locked the original away in the vault. Directed by James Whale the same year he did Frankenstein (1931), the picture charts the romance of a chorus-girl-turned-streetwalker (Mae Clarke) and a well-born young soldier (Kent Douglass) on brief furlough from the trenches during WWI. Apart from a zesty prelude in a London music hall and two scenes on the titular bridge, the film remains yoked to its talky theatrical source, a Robert E. Sherwood play flogging the hoary conceit that no fallen woman, however pure of heart, could be permitted to marry into a good family. Unlike the Hays Code-compliant remake, the film leaves no doubt how the heroine makes her living. --Richard T. Jameson

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of its kind........2007-06-27

The three films in this collection are fine examples of pre-code Hollywood. In this edition the prints are at release quality. It's wonderful to be able to travel back to the period and experience the movie industry back then. Of the three Baby Face is the superior film, perhaps so because Barbara Stanwyck was so outstanding even back then in her mid-20s.

5 out of 5 stars Three great movies and three great performances.......2007-06-11

These movies are outstanding in many ways, but in two especially. First they let us know that our grandparents and parents had just as many conflicts with romance, love and sexual congress as we do. Second, they may help to bring recognition to two largely forgotten actresses, Jean Harlow and Mae Clarke.
A few days ago, after watching China Seas with a friend he asked me, "what is the whole Harlow Legend about" I told him to watch Red Dust, or better still Red Headed Woman. In her early movies Jean was young healthy and full of sass. In her later films as illness overtook her the light was gone. Miss Harlow was always best in comedy. The dramatic roles assigned to her were generally so one dimensional that no actress could have made anything of them. Red Headed Woman is a comedy and Jean sparkles. The movie was a 'succes de scandale' in 1932 and audiences were laughing despite themselves. The kind of raw-naked ambition Jean gives Lill has now become so familiar to us that some people may not get the point. Please bear in mind that in 1932 girls like Lill could not have careers in Law or Politics. Remember, this is a comedy.
Mention Mae Clark and if people know who you are talking about they will probably recall Jimmy Cagney and the grapefruit. There was so much more and Waterloo Bridge will introduce you to it. Miss Clarke as Myra Deauville is always genuine in a role that could easily become maudlin, cloying and artificial. James Whale created a movie that was sixty or seventy years ahead of it's time. And yes, that is Bette Davis before the wiggling, grimacing and scene-stealing took over.

5 out of 5 stars Forbidden Pleasures !.......2007-05-31

Oh man ! What a treat to have these movies together. And the knockout punch was having BOTH versions of "Baby Face". The quality was excellent and I am thrilled with my purchase. I am looking forward to Volume 2.

5 out of 5 stars An Informative Analysis/Comparison (Babyface, pre- and post-Code).......2007-05-13

Exactly what I was looking for. While taking a law in literature course in law school this past year, the professor directed the class to watch Babyface and observe how it was transgressive in light of the Hays Production Code. Pretty neat that one's able to watch both the pre- and post-Code versions of Babyface and see how the versions essentially reflected the prevailing moral code at the time, and how that moral code differed depending on other related socio-economic factors (e.g. the Great Depression). Anyway, I'd recommend this set for the sole reason stated above. I did also think Babyface pre-Code was an extremely intelligent and witty movie and thoroughly enjoyed watching it although it was required as an assignment. I also enjoyed the other films included in this set.

4 out of 5 stars No virgins here. It's neck & neck .......2007-04-21

between the two tramps most likely to "sleep" their way to the top. There's Jean Harlow as Lil in Red Headed Women & Barbara Stanwyck as Lily in Baby-Face, the movie with the famous song of the same name. Mae Clark as Myra, trolling for men off of Waterloo Bridge, completes this trio of trollops. She is out of the running simply because she's lovable & sympathetic as a World War I hooker in London, trying to keep it together. She actually falls in love with a GI. I give it by a lovely nose to Barbara. The movie is simply better & made batter. At this point, she is a better actress that Jean. Lily's been damaged by her barkeep father who pimps her out in steel town. He dies in a fire that burns the saloon down & she heads for NYC. There she selects a high rise bank & goes to work. She has a plan. It's simple. Use sex to work her way up the corporate ladder. She disposes of a young, love-struck John Wayne early on. There is a long list of leading men & I'm sorry I lost count & track. But she works her way thru lots of men discarding each as she moves up the hierarchy. Men die & kill for her. She doesn't appear to like sex that much, only to use it. Rich & notorious, she reaches the top & marries the CEO. But the company is headed for the rocks & her husband is broke & in trouble with the law. She is rich & at first refuses to help. He shoots himself. At this point, she suddenly realizes that she loves this man. That should be the end of the movie, Lily wallowing in the grief she deserves. But the brains at Warner couldn't leave it alone. They tagged another ending on it. Lily's husband recovers from a bullet in the head & they return to poverty & happiness in steeltown. Stanwyck did not appear in that scene. which was obviously shot later. There's a little S&M in Red Headed Women if that's your taste but Baby-Face is still slightly better. You can get all three together, & you should. Together they are *****.

Two indisputable Elvis classics bolster this six-pack of Kingly films, with special emphasis on Elvis as race-car driver (three pictures feature this fave filmic occupation). Everybody loves Jailhouse Rock, the third movie in the Presley filmography. It's a kicky tale about a jailbird who learns to be a rock & roll singer in prison (a plot not at all crazy by later Elvis standards). The film catches Elvis in the freshness of being the New Thing, and his rave-up to the title tune is an exultant announcement that rock and roll just bashed down the front door of popular culture.

It Happened at the World's Fair jumps ahead five years, the Elvis formula set. Location shooting at the futuristic Seattle World's Fair of 1962 lends a quirky backdrop, and check out the young Kurt Russell (future inhabitor of the Elvis persona) kicking the King in the shins. Viva Las Vegas is the other consensus classic: EP plays a race-car driver waiting tables in Sin City, sparking big time with Ann-Margret. The two stars generate some heat, and the theme song has inspired many a road trip. No such trip will be inspired by Harum Scarum, a mad comedy set in the Middle East. Elvis is kidnapped while touring, and a lame spoof of Rudolph Valentino movies ensues.

It's back to the race track for the remaining pair. Spinout places the King in the direct path of three marriage-minded women, but he prefers his car and his guitar. Dumb plot, but the songs at least are agreeably rocking. Speedway has a slimmed-down Elvis and a groovy nightclub hangout, plus the ineffable Nancy Sinatra--there's some terrific kitsch value in this one. --Robert Horton

It Happened at the World's Fair is my favorite movie starring Elvis Presley. It took me a long time to collect this particular movie. The other movies in this collection are very good.

5 out of 5 stars JAILHOUSE ROCK? A 5.... the rest.....??? silencio.......2006-02-08

With King Creole, Love Me Tender and Stay Away Joe - JAILHOUSE ROCK 1957 is Elvis Presley at his best. He declined the old musical tradition of MGM and insisted on a contemparary look - especially how the choreography should be executed.

In this film we see ELVIS PRESLEY at his very best. He was a stunning actor - much more prefer HIM to James Dean... It`s a shame he made more or less 33 forgettable films.... only a handful stands out and JAILHOUSE ROCK is the best. It isn`t a classic - it isn`t even great. But we have ELVIS - the KING - and that`s the best there is:-)))

One of the cinema's great disappearing acts came to a close with the release of The Thin Red Line in late 1998. Terrence Malick, the cryptic recluse who withdrew from Hollywood visibility after the release of his visually enthralling masterpiece Days of Heaven (1978), returned to the director's chair after a 20-year coffee break. Malick's comeback vehicle is a fascinating choice: a wide-ranging adaptation of a World War II novel (filmed once before, in 1964) by James Jones. The battle for Guadalcanal Island gives Malick an opportunity to explore nothing less than the nature of life, death, God, and courage. Let that be a warning to anyone expecting a conventional war flick; Malick proves himself quite capable of mounting an exciting action sequence, but he's just as likely to meander into pure philosophical noodling--or simply let the camera contemplate the first steps of a newly birthed tropical bird, the sinister skulk of a crocodile. This is not especially an actors' movie--some faces go by so quickly they barely register--but the standouts are bold: Nick Nolte as a career-minded colonel, Elias Koteas as a deeply spiritual captain who tries to protect his men, Ben Chaplin as a G.I. haunted by lyrical memories of his wife. The backbone of the film is the ongoing discussion between a wry sergeant (Sean Penn) and an ethereal, almost holy private (newcomer Jim Caviezel). The picture's sprawl may be a result of Malick's method of "finding" a film during shooting and editing, and in some ways The Thin Red Line seems vaguely, intriguingly incomplete. Yet it casts a spell like almost nothing else of its time, and Malick's visionary images are a challenge and a signpost to the rest of his filmmaking generation. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Exquisite Cinema.......2007-05-29

Stunning. Director Terrence Malick brilliantly portrays the dichotomies of life and death, of humankind's dark, yet brilliant soul, and nature's beauty and indifference in this adaptation of the 1962 James Jones war novel. This cinematic masterpiece boasts extraordinary acting performances from a cast of actors including Nick Nolte, Adrien Brody and Sean Penn. Cinematography and soundtrack in this film are lush and beautiful, the camera work is astounding. "The Thin Red Line" is a sensual, rich and emotive journey through a South Pacific island jungle during the WWII battle of Guadalcanal.

5 out of 5 stars Quite different angle on a war movie.......2007-05-20

I watched this movie late in the evening, after coming home from my son's 14th birthday party. My festive mood quickly turned responsive and contemplative. My son watched part of it too but fell asleep due to exhaustion. Thin Red Line is a fascinating view on a dark and cruel chapter of WWII, the bitter, relentless fight over Guadalcanal in the Pacific theater of war. What struck me most about this film is the fact that man's conflict is set against the overwhelming background of nature and the elements. Although the fighting is intense and without mercy, nature is in large part undisturbed by it and uninterested in the outcome. The fighting scenes are intersparsed by scenes of tranquility and peacefulness. American GI's and Japanses Imperial troops are both depicted as accidental heroes and victims. There are exiting vistas and images of nature, animals, sunsets and sundowns, clouds and the omnipresent jungle. You hear the rustling of the wind in the grass and the trees. Like it must have been for the soldiers most of the time. Although there are parallels with Saving Private Ryan, it is an altogether different approach. The acting is great. Especially Jim Caviezel's and Sean Penn's. The actors doing a cameo (John Travolta, Nick Nolte)in my view are far less convincing.
I recommend this movie to anyone who is bored by the average run of the mill war flick with brainless heroes who rampage through the movie shooting everything that moves without being hit or hampered by remorse. Mr Terence Malick did an excellent job. I look forward to his next movie, whatever that may be. An intelligent, philosophical and artful anti war-movie depicting the cruelty of man and the senselessness of human conflict in all its degrading details. I was truly impressed by it.

5 out of 5 stars Combat: up close and personal.......2007-05-02

I read James Jones' book many years ago, but found it a memorable account of the fighting on Guadalcanal. Director Terrence Malick did a masterful job of capturing Jones' essence in this film. The combat is sudden, brutal, unforgiving. Yet the cinematography is breathtaking. The juxtaposition of beauty and agony is gripping. An all-star cast seems a bit overdone in places, with big-name celebrities making only brief appearances at some rather odd intervals. The philosophical thoughts by some of the characters was an intriguing ingredient, but again, echoed Jones' writing. For war film junkies or WWII buffs, this is a must-see. For those who want their war fix in flag-waving, glorious hero style, this isn't for you.

5 out of 5 stars Moral, spiritual depravity .......2007-04-05

Perhaps the most poignant aspect of 'The Thin Red Line' is that most of the Human Race -- more specifically, most Americans (I'm American) -- cannot comprehend the significance of this film. It's not that these people are intellectually incapable of understanding the subject matter, either; it's Humanistic and spiritual; the intelligence that most all Human beings possess. Objectivity amongst those (myself included) that posses the capability helps heightening the experience in several ways, but the bottom line is the absurdly important theme of this work of art (this is one film that labeling a "movie" would be demeaning and completely unsatisfactory) -- that theme is one of death. Films like 'Saving Private Ryan' are conducted with blatant conservatism and, truly, pale infinitely in philosophical significance. Not that Spielberg's vision was thoughtless or without merit, but it wasn't progressive in the way that Malick presents his convictions.

How one can see the film as pretentious or self-indulgent is truly beyond me, and I to attain the belief that it is also a matter of elitism, pathological symptoms of an inability to deal with the subject of non-existence. There are wonderfully smart people, too, that dismiss this film, which is why it's truly such a shame; these people have grown so much on an objective level, reaching brilliant levels of luminosity, but the nature of our currently disconnected, post-modern world, with its absolutely aggressive fight with our Human nature, has made us entirely unable to deal with the repercussions of it. Thus, these geniuses which so many of us truly are have been spiritually, subjectively suppressed to the point that that entirely different level of intelligence -- emotional, spiritual -- has been neglected. Now a days, especially, it's almost seen as stupid, which really boils my %#@U*(U%@) blood, because the social, Human consequences of this elitist mentality has served to provide a severe inferiority complex among those that do have spiritual ideals and, in their deepest self, know that they are right. They are dreamers whose dream has crawled desperately into the hole of isolation and despair. What's wonderful about 'The Thin Red Line', though, is that it so movingly brings out this hope within us by emphasizing the utterly horrific -- especially for the heroic, psychologically broken down individuals -- nature of war and suffering. It's the quintessential expression of the dichotomy between hate and love, good and evil, spiritual light and dark. And this is Malick -- truly one of the most important Human beings on the planet -- an Einstein of our day -- so everything is presented in the most realistic, least manipulative way possible -- in a WAY; Hans Zimmer's score parallels these themes and subtext, additionally, and it's one of the most emotionally powerful scores I've ever heard (this is Hans Zimmer, too; never before, nor since, has he dealt or composed a score with such amazing thought and intellect). At any rate, I say "in a way" because the ultimate, redemptive, religious theme of the film is that it is possible to attain levels of consciousness that we so ignore; it IS preachy, but only because Malick's presented philosophy is firmly rooted in an ultimate answer, or at the very minimum, expressing the POSSIBILITY of what we can become through free will and love, hope and faith.

I have no intention of commenting on the value and brilliance of the filmic genius of Malick's creation, suffice to say his conveyance of all of this existential idea is only possible through an utter capability and talent that few have. That's the other thing -- I love directors like Cameron, Spielberg, etc, but they are ultimately so much less reflective and, in the larger scheme of things, important, because they are afraid, or possibly simply unable, to express film in it's highest form -- where narrative ultimately ceases to fall behind thought, philosophy, and truly powerful subtext. They fail to comment, at least in comparison, on the subjective experience of our Human existence; that's what separates Malick from these talented directors (on the other hand, colder, philosophical filmmakers such as Kubrick and Cronenberg and debatably near-equal in brilliance -- which is why I love them so -- but the generally despairing worldview -- at least morally, surely their themes revolve around hugely important Human issues such as individual, sexual evolution, death, mystery, etc, but they are generally far less hopeful in the end (I will state, however, that Cronenberg's 'The Fly' is one film that rivals my intimate connection to 'The Thin Red Line'; in its case, the possibility of such a powerful view of non-existence following death makes 'The Fly' almost more tragic in a way, because it is so utterly discomforting and sad).

I could go on and on, but I think I got across some of my convictions and beliefs, and more than anything -- Love -- towards this film, and I hate to dismiss the beauty of the cinematography and unrivaled acting by these amazing men, but I have limited space, and I get fatigued, too!

I'm not where I want to be in Life, spiritually, but I am growing. I love you all. Why does a part of me feel squeamish saying that? Because to so many of us it comes across as a pathetically gooey, sentimental, truthfully meaningless act. Love IS an act, of true respect and utter compassion, in its higher states, and the fact that we've dismissed that over time is arguably the biggest tragedy of our world. (and even if you stand by the notion that the particular vision and belief is an illusion -- a state never really partook in as a collective species -- you must also confront the fact that you are denying it as an ideal in itself, because it's so very possible you, too, consider that notion of heaven on earth the truest dream of all.

5 out of 5 stars The World as Will and Representation.......2007-04-03

This is not a "war film" and it is not an "antiwar film." What Malick (a former philosophy student) has done is *use* the setting of modern warfare as a way of communicating the essence of Schopenhauer's metaphysics and ethics. Underneath the surface of the observable, individuated phenomena, the essence of the world is will: a non-individuated, passionate yet pointless destructive striving. The will is embodied in Nick Nolte, who lives to fight and win, while recognizing that his way is the way of "nature." "Look at those vines, Staros, swallowing everything. Nature is cruel." True insight into the nature of the will, however, leads to compassion for the suffering of others, since we are all One behind appearances, and renunciation of desiring (and its inevitable concomitants, conflict and suffering). The denial of the will is represented by Jim Cavaziel. According to Schopenhauer, if one recognizes the futility of willing but cannot achieve this state of complete ascetic denial, the only other alternative is to mitigate one's own suffering by keeping one's expectations as low as possible. This stance is embodied by Sean Penn. From the first, crucial dialogue between Penn and Cavaziel, the agenda of the film is placed before us: given that the world is as it is, should we cling to this world and despair, or should we turn away from it and transcend? As Penn says, "there's no world but this one." Cavaziel replies, "I've seen another world." *That* is what the film is about: a choice between mysticism and nihilism.

The film is not pro-war, because it assumes as Schopenhauer did, that moral justifications of war are always nothing more than rationalizations of a more fundamental need for violence. The film is not anti-war, because unlike all other anti-war films, it does not set up a contrast between a morally praiseworthy form of ordinary life and a morally repugnant form of activity created by and creating war. If war is an expression of the cruelty of nature, or reality itself, moral judgment of it makes no sense---one might as well condemn the jungle for being jungle. This goes some way toward explaining the peculiar detachment the film aspires to and achieves. The catastrophe the characters are caught up in is the world itself, and the film offers no adequate response to it than to serenely transcend it.

In its eighth year, the Canadian comedy series carries on its absurdist brand of rustic humor in The Red Green Show: 1998 Season. As always, the Possum Lodge's indefatigable handyman, Red Green (Steve Smith), proves a never-ending fount of ideas about turning junkyard debris into modern conveniences and applying a bit of know-how to applications of duct tape on anything and everything. 1998 Season gets off to a scary start with the prospect of Red's nebbish nephew Harold (Patrick McKenna) leaving the show to attend college, which might be true or might be a ploy to earn Red's respect and attention. (The pre-credits teaser is one of the series' best: Red offering a suggestion about how to keep birds from crashing into one's picture window.) "House Moving" is literally that, an episode about moving an old building by balancing it on pick-up trucks. Guest star Graham Greene (Dances With Wolves) is around in a show in which Red demonstrates how to turn a car into a backhoe. "College Life" raises the prospect of Harold going off to school again, this time sharing an apartment with three girls, a situation for which he is less than prepared. In "Free Apricots," a tractor-trailer flips and provides Red and his chums with a large supply of the fruit; meanwhile, Red invents a car jack that goes really, really high. The very funny "Town Services Contract" finds the Possum Lodge boys receiving a contract for towing, snow-plowing, and ambulance services to Possum Lake. One of the best episodes of the season, "Mad About You," concerns Harold attempting to teach Red about anger management, an effort that goes hilariously awry. --Tom Keogh

Description

It was a very good mostly okay not-as-bad-as-it-could-have-been year.

Wit and wisdom of Possum Lodge
Written by and starring Steve Smith

As Red says, "You have to grow old, but you don't have to mature." Eight years into its 15-year run, The Red Green Show showed no signs of maturity. This complete season of the public television hit sees Red at his most inventive, making a heart pacemaker out of a digital clock and trying to run the lodge electrical system from a car cigarette lighter, just to name a couple dismal but hilarious failures. It was also the year that Red ran for mayor and Harold ran off . . . to college. College??

Join Red, Harold, and all the guys at Possum Lodge for a year's worth of doing what men do when women aren't around—and some things that are even worse. "Red is a manly man with a bent brain pan . . . a hip cult classic" —The Detroit Free Press

EXTRA JUNK: Red and Harold character bios.

These are some of Red Green's best shows. A must-have for any of his fans or fans of good comedy in general!

4 out of 5 stars Red Green.......2007-06-26

My husband loves this show. It's kinda studpid but it gets a lot of laughs.

5 out of 5 stars Spare the duct tape...Spoil the project!.......2007-06-01

It's the long awaited release of the 1998 season of the Red Green Show! It was a short but wonderful season or as Red puts it; "It was a not-as-bad-as-it could-have-been year." This is a three disk set with 14 episodes. The video is crisp and clear and the audio is great too. The menus on the disks are easy to navigate through and there is the all important "play all" feature as well. As always; everyone we love and admire are in this set; Hap; Mike; Bill; Dalton; Edgar and Ranger Gord!

For those of you who already own the "Stuffed and Mounted" DVD's, here is a list of the episodes from this season that are also on the Stuffed and Mounted releases.

"The Mayor Race"- Red runs for mayor of Possum Lake. (Stuffed & Mounted 6)

"Better To Give Than Receive"- The guys become competitive blood donors. (Stuffed & Mounted 5)

"Town Services Contract"- Possum Lake hires the lodge to supply tow truck, snow plow and ambulance service. (Stuffed & Mounted 4)

"Life Cycle"- Red & Harold compete in a novel road race. (Stuffed & Mounted 3)

"Mad About You"- Harold teaches Red about anger management (Stuffed & Mounted 2)

Also worth mentioning; "It's A Wonderful Red Green Christmas" is available on DVD seperately.

In my humble opinion; even though almost half of these episodes have been released before, this is still worth owning. So if you love Red Green; show your support by buying this set. God willing if sales are good; the rest of the seasons will ultimately follow. Remember; I'm pulling for ya; were all in this together!

Definitely a contender for the underwhelming title of Best Elvis Movie, this handsomely shot Western actually makes Elvis act, rather than coast on his personality. (As though to underscore the point, the two obligatory songs are dispensed with under the opening credits and in the first scene.) Don Siegel was probably the best director the King ever worked with, and he draws a quietly smoldering performance from Elvis, who was still undeniably raw. Even better, Siegel captures an existential starkness to homestead and town, and calmly makes a pro-Native American case without preaching (Elvis plays a half-breed caught between sides in an Indian vs. settlers dustup). Yes, this was 30 years before Dances with Wolves--there were actually quite a few such movies during this era. All in all, a decent picture, and an indication of where Elvis's career might have gone if he hadn't given himself over to fluff. --Robert Horton

Description

West Texas in the years after the Civil War is an uneasy meeting ground of two cultures, one white. The other native American. Elvis portrays Pacer Burton. The son of a white rancher (John McIntire) and his beatiful Kiowa Indian wife (Dolores DelRio). When fighting breaks out between the settlers and natives, Pacer tries to act as a peace maker, but the "flaming star of death" pulls him irrevocably into the deadly violence.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Western with a difference.......2007-03-29

For Elvis fans this shows the King in a serious role as a half caste neither accepted by his white counterparts or the Indian comunnity. For its time it is a good account of how predudice can influence the opions of all. For classic movie lovers it is well worth seeeing as the cast in general is excellent (Steve Forrest, Dolores del Rio) and the story does have merrit. It is a good western and for Elvis fans a tear jerker as "Pacer" rides off in the sunset to die. 97 mins of entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Flaming Star .......2007-03-08

This is one of Elvis's best movies. A movie the whole family can enjoy on a Saturday night.

5 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good movie and performance.......2007-02-02

I can only concur with all the praise I am reading in these other reviews. I was completely unprepared for how good this movie is. I watched it only because it was an Elvis movie. During the credits, I wondered that there were only 2 songs listed. "How can that be?" But the songs were over 5 minutes into the film, and the rest was a masterful and suspenceful drama that I absolutely didn't expect to see.

The actors are all excellent. There wasn't anyone who seemed to be faking it or just going through the motions. Elvis is very believable in this role, and there are no excuses or apologies made for the feelings of anyone in the movie. This movie shows very much the ugliness that can happen when things go wrong and people band together based on color or background. Pacer, his mother, and their whole family are basically victims caught in the web of prejudice and hatred from *both* the white settlers and the Native-Americans who are protecting their land.

Despite the standard day-for-night shooting, there are some wonderful images in the film, such as the sequence where Pacer's wounded mother struggles across the windy and bare fields near their house. It seems almost allegorical the way the wind and dirt swirl and impede her progress, and she stumbles and struggles to push her way forward, across land that in previous scenes seemed friendly and bucolic. When her husband rushes out to look for her, I felt actual physical pain in my chest from his terror that she would be lost and dying in the bare soil of this land that he had tended for 20 years, and that now seemed like an enemy to him for it hid from him what he loved. Truly an amazing sequence from an excellent director.

5 out of 5 stars Only film that they let him 'act' instead of alot of singing.......2006-10-08

This film showed Elvis's ability as an actor, the only one that ever did. Most of his films were chasing women, and singing. This and Blue Hawaii, to me, are the best. The theme 'Flaming Star', I really felt applied to him at his death...think of his life, and listen to the words....

5 out of 5 stars Flaming Star is not just a great Elvis movie.......2006-08-13

It's a great movie, period! I just saw it in Cinemascope at the Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood last night and I was stunned by its excellence. I've often heard that this movie proved that Elvis could "act" but I've always been skeptical. I assumed the movie would be full of histrionic treacle and have studiously avoided it.

Big mistake. This movie is first rate, of the highest order. Elvis has gotten knocked over the years for not making more movies like "Flaming Star". But, when you really think about it, NO ONE made movies like "Flaming Star", in any era!

The movie starts tragically and continues it's ever-widening downward spiral until the very end! There's not a light moment in the picture (excluding the very first scene) and it's to be commended for not pulling any punches. Shakespeare didn't write tragedy any better than this.

That is why "Flaming Star" is so satisfying. It stands apart from just about any film you can think of. I LIKE tragedy and would like to see more of it. But, evidently, tragedy doesn't sell and that's why Hollywood stays away from it.

Not only does Elvis play the role of the half-breed Pacer perfectly but he is well-suited to the part. Marlon Brando would not have been a good choice. Elvis looks the part of a half-breed and resembles his Indian "brothers" as much or more than his "real" white brother.

Not enough has been said here at Amazon about the superb perfomances by John McIntire and Steve Forrest in this film. I've seen both of them a million times in films and it's hard to get excited about either one of them. But, in "Flaming Star", their performances are dead-on. They are well-cast and letter perfect in their roles.

Barabara Eden and Delores Del Rio are also superb. Don Siegal knew what he wanted out of all of the actors in this picture and he got what he wanted, in spades.

GREAT film! You don't have to be an Elvis fan to admire it.

A message from Red Green

OK, SO YOU GOT A PROBLEM in that your anniversary—which you seem to recall is coming up—it's gone by. It was yesterday and you pulled a complete blank. Total amnesia. So you need help digging your way out of this `cause you are now in the deep stuff. The main thing is, don't blame yourself. It's not your fault.

WE CAN'T HELP IT—WE'RE MEN!

A lot's been written about the differences between men and women. In fact, way too much. That's why I've decided to tackle the subject on video. With help from the men of Possum Lodge (and also from my nephew Harold), I'd like to lead us to a better understanding between the various sexes. Remember, we're all in the same boat, and women are on the shore, laughing.

This is the absolute BEST comedy show we, as a family have ever seen! Our 6 and 7 year olds love it,too. We initially saw it on the PBS network late at night, and could not believe that we had NOT seen it durring the origional airing of the show! It is simply the best ever--we can hardly wait to see the rest. Steve Smith, and the rest of the "gang" are super.

I know what you're thinking: "A six-pack . . . I can polish that off in one night." And I'm sure you can. And often have. But this one's different. Each DVD in this box contains EIGHT of the best episodes from The Red Green Show, handpicked by yours truly to prove that good television can be watched over and over. (Or that people our age can't remember whether they've seen something before or not.) That makes 48 episodes of Red Green in all. So don't think of it as a six-pack. Think of it as two cases.

5 out of 5 stars Red Green is hilarious.......2007-03-20

My dad started watching this show when I was younger and I never really sat down and watched it until I bought this DVD pack for him. Although it's humor is aimed towards middle-aged men, I think anyone (including myself-a female in her 20's) can appreciate it. It's kind of like Tool Time (from Home Improvement) meets Bob Villa but crossed with goffiness and humor. This DVD pack is great because it really does have a ton of episodes on it. Definately worth the money.

3 out of 5 stars The Duct Tape King.......2007-02-08

I ordered this for my husband's birthday....and we've had non-stop laughs since!!
I WOULD like to see more of the recent episodes on DVD as well...
Red Green and the bunch ("Rothchild's Sewer Sucking System" is a scream) are a wild and crazy group and we try to never miss a Saturday night on PBS.
You'll enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Red Green is the best!.......2006-08-20

I have been enjoying Red Green on PBS for years - unfortunately it is not always available. I was excited to hear this set was out and I was not disappointed. They certainly did pick some great episodes, and the added commentary gives some more insight into the series (I never knew they won awards for being that goofy). Great fun - I watch it with my Dad and son - we can just relax and laugh and have fun. This set is definitely "top shelf" material - get it in your library today!

4 out of 5 stars Any Red Green release is worth getting! This was the first 'Stuffed and Mounted' on DVD only.......2006-06-07

Very good episodes of the funny
Canadian TV hit show about goofy
charcaters that hang out @ Possum
Lodge and get into all sorts of
hijinx, building boats from old cars,
etc. Too hard to explain to casual
viewers. Check your PBS listing in
your area for times, if you are
lucky enough to get it!

The long-running Canadian comedy series is in top form on The Red Green Show: 1997 Season, representing the 7th year the Possum Lodge's resident handyman, Red Green (Steve Smith), shares his wisdom and dubious skills with duct tape and junkyard flotsam. Affectionately vexed by nebbish nephew Harold Green (Patrick McKenna), who never stops goading Red into dreaming bigger dreams for The Red Green Show, the greying host celebrates the sale of his series to Swiss television (though he isn't sure if Switzerland and Sweden are one and the same), organizes a local version of Pamploma's "Running of the Bulls" (though he's only got one healthy bull available), and shares advice on how to keep one's grown-up grandchildren attentive and loving (by making them think there's a sizable inheritance coming their way--which there isn't).

On the creative front, Red demonstrates how to make one's own version of an Airstream trailer out of discarded appliance parts and an aluminum boat. Red also uses massive quantities of duct tape to turn two beat-up cars into, uh, one very large, beat-up car, and he transforms an old police car into a zebra-striped, personal emergency vehicle. Meanwhile, speculation runs high at the lodge about the identity of a mystery celebrity who's buying a cabin in the neighborhood, and Harold acquires two tubas in hopes that Red will learn to play it with him. As always, The Red Green Show is both absurd and sweet in its effort to promote manly virtues among clueless men. Smith and McKenna, as always, are a real hoot. --Tom Keogh

Description

Seven years into its 15-year run, The Red Green Show was just hitting its stride, or was that the fan? Anyway, this complete season of the public television comedy hit features some of the show's greatest moments. It was the year Red made the double-wide limo in Handyman Corner and the year the Repair Shop opened with its motto: "If it ain't broke, you're not trying." It was also the year the lodge members first uttered their solemn prayer: "I'm a man, but I can change if I have to, I guess."

Join Red, Harold, and all the guys at Possum Lodge for a year's worth of doing what men do when women aren't around—and some things that are even worse. "The funniest thing to hit public television since Monty Python's Flying Circus"—The Milwaukee Journal.

The Episodes:
Running of the Bulls—The guys at Possum Lodge stage a wild race.
Swiss It Up—Red and Harold sell the show to Switzerland.
The Implosion—A fundraiser for the Historical Society goes awry.
Adopt-a-Highway—Possum Lodge adopts a challenging stretch of highway.
The Strange Ranger—Ranger Gord goes missing from his tower.
Big Guy, Little Guy—Red joins a Big Brothers club just for the soapbox derby.
The Movie—Red and Harold make a feature film on Super 8 MOS.
Expropriation—Red speculates in real estate after a new highway is announced.
The Stool Pigeons—Harold creates an informer's club to snitch on criminals.
Celebrity—Werner Klemperer buys a cottage in the Possum Lake area.
Let Me Count the Ways—The men fix up their cabins for their wives' visit to the lake.
Pardi Gras—Possum Lodge inherits 137 tubas and the guys decide to have a parade.
The Splinter Lodge—Some of the men rebel against Red's leadership.
The Good Old Hockey Game—The men argue for hockey and against curling.
Step Outside—Red encourages Harold to stand up and fight for himself.
The Town Mall—Using the sewers, the men turn downtown into a mall.
The Winter Carnival—The men stage a carnival to entertain their wives.

5 out of 5 stars The Handyman's Secret Weapon, 1997 season.......2007-05-29

This long-running Canadian comedy was popularised by PBS, but for those of us whose PBS stations do not broadcast this highly entertaining mock handyman sitcom, the DVDs are all we have. Steve Smith is Red Green, the host and expert on backwoods do-it-yourself projects, along with Patrick McKenna, who plays Harold Green, Red's geeky nephew and foil. Besides your guides, there are a number of colourful characters from Possom Lodge who are every bit quirky as the lead characters, including some very eccentric guests such as Graham Greene and Dave Thomas.

1997 marks the seventh season of its fifteen-year run, so I wonder why Acorn Media started here instead of at the beginning? Then I comfort myself with the realisation that I can't view these episodes any other way... It's a start (excluding the "Stuffed And Mounted" volumes and specials).

Learn how to turn two cars into a Hummer! What's better: curling or hockey? What do you do when you inherit 137 tubas?

Besides strange, fantastic (as in fantasy) ways to recycle old vehicles and appliances, the scripts are well-written, very witty at times, whilst heavy with puns at others. Usually I do not like puns, but if they are set up well enough, I do appreciate the effort.

There are 17 episodes, Red and Harold biographies, and production notes by Steve Smith. Let's hope the rest of the series will eventually become available.

For now, "keep your stick on the ice."

Love it, cannot wait for more seasons to come out. This is an item that you can keep forever for your memories.

5 out of 5 stars Red Green is so funny.......2007-03-12

Anyone who has ever watched the Red/Green show will like this DVD. The quality is good and there are some funny episodes on the disc. I bought this for my son for Christmas and the two of us(I'm his father) have had some great laughs!

5 out of 5 stars Red Rocks!.......2007-01-27

I love Red Green, unfortunately he has hung up his skunk mittens and won't be doing this great show any longer! :-(

We need more of these DVD collections!

5 out of 5 stars Many .......2006-12-03

For those who are familiar with the show, you know that there are many regular segments that you may need the details on also. For example, "Adventures with Bill." Many are memorable in their own right, and may be what prompts you to buy a collection or not.

I was specifically looking for the show with the "Adventures with Bill" segment with the paitball gun fight between Harold, Bill and others - its one of their more hillarious segments. So how to find this level of detail in each episode? Check on redgreen.com, there's a fairly detailed description of each episode (for every season of the show, including this 7th season). There I found the description for '"Episode 152 - "Expropriation" - Red speculates in real estate when he hears about a new highway coming through Possum Lake. Bill and Harold have a paintball war game. Red makes a friend's van into a convertible.' So I am happy to find that this segment is on one of the episodes on this first full season volume to be released, season 7.

Of course, you won't always quite get down to the actual detail of which word was on "Word Game!" (sometimes it is listed, but not usually).

This series does pick up some "speed" (and commercial poilsh) with the advent of "the New Red Green Show" in this season (as detailed in other reviews), but while some of Red's Handyman segments are a little more drawn out and slower paced in older seasons, there are still lots of classic segments in those that are worth seeing again - just don't know if there if there is enough interest for them to do be able to do that (on a season by season basis).

Or how about a DVD of just "Adventures With Bill" (& Walter, etc. for the stretch where Bill was not in those similar segments), or "Handyman Corner," etc?

The cult PBS comedy The Red Green Show stretches into a feature film with Duct Tape Forever, still very much about a batch of underachieving Canadian men and their high church of low expectations, the Possum Lodge. The longtime TV series, starring Steve Smith as flannel-shirted handyman Red Green, makes a comic virtue of Canuck self-parody and universal male ineptness.

"Whenever a man does a dumb thing," says Red, "it's better if he doesn't have an audience." Well, a lot of eyes are on Red, his geeky nephew Harold (Patrick McKenna), and the other boys after a rich man (Richard Fitzpatrick) drives his car into a Possum Lodge sinkhole and sues for damages. The solution: Build a giant, duct tape goose and enter it in a Minnesota contest for cash prizes. Of course. Co-creator Smith re-tools the show's self-deprecating essence and run-on joke about male incompetence into a winning movie. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Anything Red Green is Gold!.......2007-05-28

If you like the Red Green crew and you also like classics like Animal House, this is the two joined. Red and Harold are in a race aginst time to save...

It doesn't have all the odd handyman projects and the tidbits of wisdom you fine in the show, which made it seem somehow refreshing.

5 out of 5 stars SIDE-SPLITTING FUN!.......2007-05-17

More of the gange at the "Moose Lodges" slap stick humor through various antics. Halarious good fun that will keep you rolling on the floor and your sides sore from laughing so hard. OH MY GOSH!!!

1 out of 5 stars Oh my god . . . .......2007-04-29

Okay, I work nights for a good part of the year (tax accountant), and my local PBS station runs two episodes of Red Green every night at 10PM, and I think I've seen nearly every one of the 300 episodes, I practically lived with Steve Smith's creation. So, like you, being a fan of the show, I thought this was probably marginal and somewhat predictable, but I figured I'd show my appreciation and put a nickel in his pocket.

So, having done so, I'd like to talk to all the middle aged guys out there who are fans of the show. Do not watch this DVD. Not ever. You want to give Steve a few bucks? Fine. Buy a coffee mug off his website or something. My copy went straight from the DVD player to the trash bin, I don't even want to own it, much less ever disgrace my memory of Possum Lodge with this . . . goose by watching it again. It's that bad, it really is. Take your stick off the ice and bash this DVD with it.

3 out of 5 stars Red Green's Duct Tape Forever.......2007-04-22

As funny as the TV series. Warning - the DVD is promoted as providing 1.85:1 aspect ratio, ideal for widescreen HD TVs, but the image size is inexplicably reduced in size and does not fill the screen, leaving an annoying letterbox frame on all sides. The DVD does not provide any setup options to correct this.

Purchased this for my friend's little brothers, who have discovered this show just recently. It was an instant hit & we all enjoyed watching the shows.
