The bright, glossy world of Doris Day and Rock Hudson sex comedies gets a self-aware brush-up in Down with Love. Pillow-lipped Renée Zellweger (Chicago) plays Barbara Novak, the author of a bestselling book called Down with Love that advises women to focus on their careers and have sex à la carte--just like a man would. Determined to prove that Novak is just as vulnerable to love as any woman, dashingly chauvinist magazine writer Catcher Block (ever-charming Ewan McGregor, Moulin Rouge) pretends to be a courtly astronaut who wouldn't dream of putting his hand on a woman's knee. This piffle of a story seems like nothing more than an excuse for ironic double-entendres and dazzling production design, until a sneaky plot twist suddenly raises the stakes for the movie's end. As he always does, the brilliant David Hyde Pierce (Frasier) scores the most comic points as Block's fussy editor. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Dreary Saturday Suddenly Gets Better--that's worth some..........2007-06-03

...stars, I do believe. We've all been there--clutching a second cup of coffee wishing somehow for a free moment instead of a day chock-full of necessary and tedious chores. Hunched down in my chair, total funk and this lovely came up--started watching and pretty soon I felt much better. So many pros from costume and set design to spot on perfect choreography and comedy timing--how could any world with such a silly, lively comedy be intolerable? So I slipped on my brightest togs, curled my hair, added a bright lip gloss and sashayed out the door on the way to the market. Ahhh, the power of Hollywood!

1 out of 5 stars who decided to make this train wreck?.......2007-02-19

I have always hated the coy sex comedies of the early sixties -- men "taking advantage" of women who had to protect their "virtue". Who could possibly have thought a remake would be a good idea? This is no tribute, its a virtual copy of something that was witless and offensive to begin with. I watched this on cable just to see if Renee Zellweger really took part in a movie as bad as this looked, and she did and it was. No update, no twise, just a pastiche of bad movies. Even the clothes were so over the top that poor Renee looked like a child playing dress-up.

4 out of 5 stars You'd be a cynic not to smile!.......2007-02-10

It's difficult to know whether to label this as a salute to, or a pastiche of, the 60's rom-coms of Doris Day and Rock Hudson. But whichever way you want to enoy it, this has some inspired moments of comedy. And comedy of a sort that you can't find elsewhere in this decade!
Having said that, there are some moments which jar.. moments such as a telephone conversation in split screen which seems more inspired by Austin Powers than by Doris and Rock...
But the pace and style of acting keep the audience with a smile on their face, albeit a more knowing one than audiences in the 60's had.
Ewan McGregor and Renee Zellweger just do not seem up to the task of lifting performances from their predecessors, but still deserve plaudits for a noble attempt. The supporting cast on the other hand are spot on, particularly David Hyde-Pierce's turn as the boss - it may be a rerun of his Frasier character, but is all the better for it!
The backgrounds, the colours, the costumes, the rear projection techniques - all remind us that this is a comedy consciously marking out its territory as a 60's rom com, but the script and stars will keep you firmly in this decade as you watch it.
In summary, a bit of a mixed up recipe, but one which ultimately rises to the occasion - and if you are wavering, the generous and entertaining extras should help swing the balance.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!.......2007-01-10

The film is just excellently done, all aspects of the film! The chemistry of the 4 main characters are great. The Casting was just perfect. How I wish there would be a sequel.

3 out of 5 stars A movie that grows on you.......2007-01-07

The first time I saw this movie, I wanted a refund. I was still in love with Chicago and thought I would forever see everything with Ms. Zellweger. How did this movie get greenlighted? Who was the target audience? Later I could appreciate the genre this film was making fun of-but still didn't see why or how they thought there was a market for such a film. The film does succeed at being charming and entertaining. So for that it's worth a peek-but only on cable.

This powerful production originated on the stage of the Glyndebourne Festival. It was restaged and filmed on location for the BBC telecast preserved in this video recording. Director Trevor Nunn takes full advantage of the realism, fluidity of movement, and precision of small details that are difficult to achieve when televising a staged performance but easy and natural in a movie treatment.

Nunn's vision, conveyed by an unusually talented cast, is constantly touching and rises to overwhelming intensity at climactic points. For example: the crap game and fight that end in Robbins's death, the hurricane scene, Crown's capture and abuse of Bess on Kittiwah Island, Porgy's fight with Crown, the comically sinister antics of Sportin' Life, the double-edged pathos and absurdity of the scene in which Bess gets "divorced," and the electrifying conclusion, when Porgy throws away his crutches and sets out, naively, to find Bess in New York.

Musically, Simon Rattle and all the performers find the exact style for Gershwin's marvelous score--not only such big numbers as "Summertime," "Bess, You Is My Woman Now," "I Loves You, Porgy," "I Got Plenty o' Nuttin'," "It Ain't Necessarily So," "I Hates Your Struttin' Style," and "O Lawd, I'm on My Way," but such smaller items as the exquisite cries of the street vendors of honey, strawberries, and crabs. There are no weaknesses in the cast. Willard White and Cynthia Haymon are ideal in the title roles, Gregg Baker is a terrifying, larger-than-life Crown, and Damon Evans is a properly slimy Sportin' Life. The white police officers are splendidly repulsive. --Joe McLellan

Description

The Gershwins' musical masterpiece Porgy and Bess is one of America's greatest works. This production was adapted for the screen by Trevor Nunn and Yves Baigneres. It was directed by Trevor Nunn and is based on the highly successful staging of the original Glyndebourne Festival Opera production in 1986-87, which was remounted at Covent Garden in the autumn of 1992 with most of the original cast. Immediately after that performance the production was moved to the giant stage at Shepperton Studios, with much expanded sets and lighting. It was then recorded using EMI's original award-winning soundtrack.

First performed in 1935 and based on the play Porgy by DuBose and Dorothy K. Heyward, Porgy and Bess has achieved worldwide renown through such memorable songs as "Summertime," "It Ain't Necessarily So," "I Got Plenty o' Nuttin'," "Oh Lawd, I'm on My Way," and many more, set to Gershwin's moving symphonic score. 184 minutes.

Porgy: Willard White
Bess: Cynthia Haymon
Crown: Gregg Baker
Serena: Cynthia Clarey
Maria: Mariette Simpson
Sporting Life: Damon Evans
Clara: Paula Ingram (sung by Harolyn Blackwell)
Jake: Gordon Hawkins (sung by Bruce Hubbard)
Mingo: Barrington Coleman
Robbins: D. Alonzo Washington (sung by Johnny Worthy)

A film of a staged performance always is interesting if the background doesn't take over. In this Glynnebourne production later filmed at a studio, that is the case. Good cast, great music (Gershwin's only opera), and popular in Europe as well as the U.S., this "Porgy" is a classic.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good!.......2007-05-19

Having read some of the other reviews, it appears as though some don't realize that Porgy and Bess was (and is) an opera. Many who are only familiar with the 1959 Samuel Goldwyn musical with Sidney Poitier, Brock Peters, Dorothy Dandrige, and Sammy Davis Jr. appear to be disappointed with this production. I too was initially introduced to Porgy and Bess via the musical. And, as a child, enjoyed it! However, after having purchased a complete score recording back in the 1970's, I came to discover just how much I was missing! I also discovered that Ira Gershwin had the Samuel Goldwyn musical pulled in 1974 since it demeaned what he and his brother, George, had in mind. A number of years back (March 20, 1983 to be exact) I saw a production of Porgy and Bess in it's entirety (it did omit the "Buzzard song") at Radio City Music Hall from the front row and was overwhelmed. I saw it again a couple of years ago at, I believe, the Carpenter Center in Richmond Va. (not quite the production as the one in NYC but good none the less). This DVD is about as close as I'll get to seeing a fine production of that opera again! If you don't like George Gershwin music or Operas, don't buy it! If you want to experience what George and Ira Gershwin intended, this is as close to it as we'll get for a while.

1 out of 5 stars out of date.......2007-03-08

In it's prime this was probably a great opera and if you are interested in the early culture of our country it is a must see. The opera is difficult to follow and a guide would be helpful otherwise you just stumble through it. Not much for entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Preminger's version is NOT the "original"!.......2006-09-20

Several other users have said everything I'm going to, but their opinions may get lost amongst the overwhelming majority of comments lamenting the unavailability of the 1959 film version of "Porgy & Bess". Let's just get some of the basic facts straight again.

The "original" production of "Porgy & Bess" as an opera took place in 1935 on stage. Even this premiere presentation was abridged, both to conform to the conventions of Broadway (where it was originally presented), and to spare the voices of the leads, particularly Porgy (which is why the "Buzzard Song" was cut from the first production).

In a sense, the first time the opera was presented as Gershwin truly envisioned it was by the Houston Grand Opera in 1976, with the full score restored, as well as the recitative passages which were frequently changed to spoken dialogue in earlier productions.

The film version was an aberration-- I've never seen it, but have read quite a bit about it, and it seems clear that this version was intended as more of a musical than an opera. Also, most of the parts were dubbed by other singers, so those who complain about about this issue on the current DVD release of the Glyndebourne production should bear that in mind.

The Gershwin estate *is* responsible for squashing any trace of the PReminger film, which I think is a shame if only for reasons of artistic free speech, but the censorship becomes more understandable when you see how many Amazon.com users have posted comments that demonstrate the 1959 film is, to a large degree, what the public sees as the true "Porgy & Bess". And this is after almost 50 years of supressing the film from public view!

OK, so all the above said, what about the Glyndebourne DVD? I think it's exceptionally well done, but share some of the reservations noted by others: the lip synching is distractingly off at points (particularly if you're watching on a large screen TV); I find the sound mixing occassionally off, sometimes drowning out the vocal lines.

But these are minor quibbles. I can't imagine a true operatic trreatment as a film. I can't even think of a precedent. It's taken for granted that cinematic presentations of Shakespeare will be abridged, rearrange, and reinterpreted, and the same holds true for film treatments of opera. The forms just don't naturally jell.

Television can present opera as opera, with just enough opening up of the action to prevent the story from feeling static or stagebound. And I think Trevor Nunn has done just this, with some creative and original interpretations of his own. Whether you like the change he's made to the ending or not, I think you have to admire the creativity behind it. It's certainly not exploitative. At worst, it's a bit sentimental. I find it inspiring, in a metaphorical way. I don't think the miracle is meant to be taken quite literally.

The performances are uniformally excellent, powerful and dignified. I was personally most impressed by Cynthia Haymon as Bess, who is really the only character to undergo a major transformation through the course of the story. She is believable, earthily beatiful, and the sympathy you feel for her intensifies the heartbreaking tragedy of her fate.

Those who have complained about the acting performances simply don't understand that opera acting is generally stylized, similarly to silent film acting. There's also an unfortunate history of only semi-competent acting in the opera world, but I can't point to a single weak link in the cast of this DVD production.

This is a creative, faithful adaptation for television of the opera as it was intended to be seen by Gershwin himself. The 1959 film should be available for contemporary evaluation, but it's simply unfair to knock this wonderful 1993 prodcution on the basis of dimly nostalgic memories of the lost Preminger film. I do wish the sound were a bit better, and that the lip synching was better matched to the dubbed vocals, but these are intellectual, trivial criticisms of what I find to be a musically and emotionally powerful presentation of Gershwin's masterpiece.

Description

Experience the high-spirited adventures of Oliver Twist in this Oscar®-winning musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' classic tale! Young Oliver (Mark Lester) is an orphan who escapes the cheerless life of the workhouse and takes to the streets of 19th-Century London. He's immediately taken in by a band of street urchins, headed by the lovable villain, Fagin (Ron Moody), his fiendish henchman, Bill Sikes (Oliver Reed), and his loyal apprentice, The Artful Dodger (Jack Wild). Through his education in the fine points of pick-pocketing, Oliver makes away with an unexpected treasure... a home and a family of his own. Set to a heartfelt score that includes such favorites as "Consider Yourself," "Where Is Love?" and "As Long As He Needs Me," OLIVER! leads us on a journey in search of love, belonging and honor among thieves. Winner of six Academy Awards® (1968), including Best Picture and Best Score, OLIVER! will steal your heart!

5 out of 5 stars Oliver Gift Set.......2007-01-21

Excellent combo package. Nice to have just the music with the DVD and the price was very reasonable.

5 out of 5 stars Oliver, CD and DVD.......2007-01-15

I will be giving this set for Christmas next year!! It brought back my childhood, and my kids(11,13,14,and 17) watch it over and over. They also all downloaded the CD to their computors. We took it on Vacation.
Problem with the DVD, it starts half way through the movie so we are missing 60 minutes. Still, 14.99 is such a great deal for the gift pack!!!

5 out of 5 stars Oliver!.......2007-01-10

One of the classics. Glad I got the DVD and sound track. A plus for my musical library.

This low-budget independent feature from 1995 is notable for its whimsical lack of substance and its self-effacing sense of humor. Writer-director Wally White plays Tommy, a gay man from New York City who flees the urban crush for the promise of an idyllic summer in Provincetown, Massachusetts. Working as a houseboy, Tommy encounters various characters as he navigates the seemingly carefree gay community, leading a Candide-like existence, betrayed by employers and friends alike, and always coming up short in friendship and in love. Randy Becker (Love! Valour! Compassion!) plays a con artist who takes advantage of the good-natured Tommy, and Darren Dryden plays the shallow and unattainable object of Tommy's affection. While the film, White's feature debut, is short on meaning or resonance, the vignette feel of the story allows for a few choice comic moments. The film is surprisingly well made for a low-budget effort. All in all, Lie Down with Dogs is an offbeat diversion and a slice of life not often seen on the screen. --Robert Lane

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Go get yourself a hartz 2 in 1 flea collar for this film........2007-05-18

This little film is a bit different. It is a cross between a documentary and an adventure or road movie. It is pretty well done and I really can't complain about the quality in sound, video, clarity, casting and so on. All those things are quite good. I was a little bored with this one. It struggles to hold your attention long enough to get it's message out. It does however have a great ending which is a very nice change. There are a lot of guys in it, several of which were very pleasing to the eyes. The content is a bit discouraging as it focuses on the night life and a whole lot too much so. This is a slut film to put it as nicely as possible. It's all about one guys journey to the fast paced, one night stand after another all summer long in the ultimate gay party spot of Provincetown. He is looking for fun, or so he thinks, but he might just find something a whole lot more satisfying within his own heart. This guy has a problem being majorly shallow. The film is not all that immune from the same disorder, but both seem to make an amazing recovery in the end. In fact, the film makes a nice point in the ending if you can stay with it long enough to get that far. It's got some low spots to endure, but this film really does have a few high spot that make it worth watching. While most of the content is not my personal cup of tea and some of it was just not really worth watching at all for me, I can't honestly say it's a bad film. It's not by any means a blockbuster, and not one I will be watching over and over again. I would recommend this one to a select group of gays who are into the party life of sex and drugs. Those will find it most entertaining. If you are not into that sort of thing, You, as I, will be more comfortable watching something else. There are a whole lot better movies out there to choose from in my humble opinion. Nevertheless, I give this one three stars. One for the quality, one for casting and acting, and the other for the ending which doesn't just leave you hanging and feeling like you got nothing at all out of your time viewing it. I would recommend a lot of other films over this one, BUT if you are determined to watch it, just keep expectations low, and consider your own feelings about the subject matter.

1 out of 5 stars stupid, dumb, non-sense!!!.......2007-03-05

What the hell is this movie?!? If I want to watch Randy Becker I would go for Love! Valour! Compassion! instead of this movie!!!

5 out of 5 stars fun in the summer sun.......2006-06-09

The latest critics (or whatever they consider themselves) provide an unjust and almost vitriolic view of this playful, not-to-be taken-seriously movie that nonetheless hides the truth of many of our (your) lives and fantasies. Wally White has achieved a splendid little essay on stereotypes (how hated they are!) and situations (how true they may be!) and has done so cheerfully and from the inside, not as an outsider looking in to damn; criticism of the our lifestyle there is (and it does apply in more cases than the self-styled critics would like to admit) but it is always tongue-in-cheek, fun, robust, playful, outrageous (even if often true, and I have seen it); and the new-wave gay, with his ultra-modern platforms who does not recognize the "truth" underlying this charade is merely self-deceptive and egotistical.
The movie is a little treasure of fun and frolic and should be taken for no more and treasured for no less. And its detractors should look a little more deeply into themselves before condemning it.

4 out of 5 stars Who do the reviewers think they are?.......2006-03-19

I've read some of the recent reviews of this hilarious little spoof and realize that some of the reviewers are more uptight than the powers on high. What you are watching, folks, in this movie is not the "real" thing nor did Mr. White intend it to be: it's a spoof, huh? And as such, it doesn't pretend to be a serious glance at gay life; or does it? Those who can't find anything "realistic" about it had better reexamine their own experience (or perhaps have a real experience). I'm not an advocate of porn but those who see this as porn are none too subtle of mind. This movie is meant to be sheer "fun," yes, at our own expense, but if we can't laugh at the joke, who can? The humor is never as raucous or "ugly" as that implied in such a film as 9 Dead Gay Guys but I know it mirrors a real world many of us have known and wanted to comment about in just these same terms. And it ends by noting that someone is out there waiting for you (provided you're not the dog that you've lain down beside).

1 out of 5 stars Lie Down with Dogs.......2005-09-17

This was a pretty terrible movie. It is kind of like a homemade movie. It includes poor acting and a weak plot. It also deals almost intirely with a homosexual lifestyle which was never mentioned at the sites I used to research this movie. The only reason I bought the movie was that one of the Actors in the movie has the same name as myself.

    Description

Renee Zellweger (Chicago) and Ewan McGregor (Moulin Rouge) are the toast of the town in the most stylish romantic comedy of the year! From the producers of American Beauty and the director of Bring It On comes a teasing, tantalizing battle of the sexes that is "pure enchantment" (Daily News). When best-selling feminist author Barbara Novak (Zellweger) becomes the target of dashing playboy Catcher Block (McGregor), these sparring, would-be lovers generate enough sparks to fly you to the moon and back. In other words, the ultimate catch has just met his match!
