John Travolta stars in this unique blend of comedy, fantasy and romance as an unsuccessful inventor who robs a bank in order to keep up payments to a loan shark. But the fast-thinking bank clerk (Olivia Newton-John) tricks him and keeps the money. Meanwhile, up in Heaven, the "Supreme Being" is talked out of doing away with mankind by angles who promise a miracle; they're convinced they can make these two equally selfish people perform a great sacrifice for each other.

There was such a magic on the screen in 1995 when the people at Pixar came up with the first fully computer-animated film, Toy Story. Their second feature film, A Bug's Life, may miss the bull's-eye but Pixar's target is so lofty, it's hard to find the film anything less than irresistible.
Brighter and more colorful than the other animated insect movie of 1998 (Antz), A Bug's Life is the sweetly told story of Flik (voiced by David Foley), an ant searching for better ways to be a bug. His colony unfortunately revolves around feeding and fearing the local grasshoppers (lead by Hopper, voiced with gleeful menace by Kevin Spacey). When Flik accidentally destroys the seasonal food supply for the grasshoppers he decides to look for help ("We need bigger bugs!"). The ants, led by Princess Atta (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), are eager to dispose of the troublesome Flik. Yet he finds help--a hearty bunch of bug warriors--and brings them back to the colony. Unfortunately they are just traveling performers afraid of conflict.
As with Toy Story, the ensemble of creatures and voices is remarkable and often inspired. Highlights include wiseacre comedian Denis Leary as an un-ladylike ladybug, Joe Ranft as the German-accented caterpillar, David Hyde Pierce as a stick bug, and Michael McShane as a pair of unintelligible pillbugs. The scene-stealer is Atta's squeaky-voiced sister, baby Dot (Hayden Panettiere), who has a big sweet spot for Flik.
More gentle and kid-friendly than Antz, A Bug Life's still has some good suspense and a wonderful demise of the villain. However, the film--a giant worldwide hit--will be remembered for its most creative touch: "outtakes" over the end credits à la many live-action comedy films. These dozen or so scenes (both "editions" of outtakes are contained here) are brilliant and deserve a special place in film history right along with 1998's other most talked-about sequence: the opening Normandy invasion in Saving Private Ryan.
The video also contains Pixar's delightful Oscar-winning short, Geri's Game. Box art varies. --Doug Thomas

Happiness.......2007-05-14
I am compelety satisfied with dvd when I recicevd it. It was in great condition, and it did not take forever to recieve it either. Thanks a lot hope to do more buisness here.
Delightful family film.......2007-04-25
I think I can just about act out any part in this movie at this point. Since this past Friday, I've watched it about 15 times. The kids love it and want to watch it over and over again. It is a darling movie about that little ant that just wouldn't give up. Great lessons for our children along with dazzling Disney animation. Highly recommended.
The Only Movie You'll Ever Need.......2007-03-30
If I could only keep one movie, this would be it. The kids love it. You learn a little bit about bugs. The kids learn to respect bugs. The outtakes are funny. My five-year old is a little scared of the mean grasshoppers, but my two-year old can't get enough of it. (2nd child syndrome) She calls it the "Princess Dot" movie.
Cute Movie. Great for young children.......2007-03-13
Overall the DVD was good and very much appropriate for young children. However, after a couple of weeks it had fallen to the back of his preference list. We've not watched it in over a year now. I guess this isn't so different from any other DVD we have.
I would recommend this for young children. It does have a few concepts that are not appropriate, but are presented in a way that is way over the heads of children adn does have a few scenes that very concervative parents may term violent. The movie is mostly an original concept but there are striking similarities to Antz.
Bug's Life GREAT.......2007-03-09
This video couldn't be better. Enjoy the helpful stories that instill good behavior actions. Thank you.

Anybody who has written him off because of his string of stinkers--or anybody who's too young to remember The Goodbye Girl--may be shocked at the accomplishment and nuance of Richard Dreyfuss's performance in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Here, he plays a man possessed; contacted by aliens, he (along with other members of the "chosen") is drawn toward the site of the incipient landing: Devil's Tower, in rural Wyoming. As in many Spielberg films, there are no personalized enemies; the struggle is between those who have been called and a scientific establishment that seeks to protect them by keeping them away from the arriving spacecraft. The ship, and the special effects in general, are every bit as jaw-dropping on the small screen as they were in the theater (well, almost). Released in 1977 as a cerebral alternative to the swashbuckling science fiction epics then in vogue, Close Encounters now seems almost wholesome in its representation of alien contact and interested less in philosophizing about extraterrestrials than it is in examining the nature of the inner "call." Ultimately a motion picture about the obsession of the driven artist or determined visionary, Close Encounters comes complete with the stock Spielberg wives and girlfriends who seek to tether the dreamy, possessed protagonists to the more mundane concerns of the everyday. So a spectacular, seminal motion picture indeed, but one with gender politics that are all too terrestrial. --Miles Bethany

Close Encounters of the Third Kind.......2007-07-03
Top science fiction entry boasts Spielberg's trademark epic sweep, and one of Dreyfuss's shining moments as the afflicted Neary. Director Truffaut is on-hand in a rare acting turn as French scientist Claude Lacombe, and Melinda Dillon excels as bewildered Mom Jillian, whose young son Barry (in a petrifying scene) has already gone up in the aliens' space ship. Don't miss this classic Spielberg spellbinder.
Take out the "H" in "Third" and that's what you've got..........2007-06-07
Who likes this movie? How could you possibly make sense of a film like this? Steven Spielberg really messed up this time around, making a movie about space and yet most of it takes place on earth. Duh...what kind of science fiction movie takes place on Earth in the 1970s? This one, I guess.
If you like to see movies about Richard Dreyfus playing with carbs, then you'll love Close Encounters. And special effects? I don't know why they're considered so revolutionary because they're not half as good as anything I saw in ID4 (that's what I call Independence Day) or MIB II (Men in Black II) or iRobot or even Wild Wild West. Apparently in Steven Spielberg's mind all space aliens are going to terrorize our planet after they arrive in a big Simon (complete with flashing colored lights and the annoying four musical notes)
The best thing about this movie is that it ends (sadly after 6 1/2 hours of people climbing on mountains and staring into the sky). Photosynthesis is more fun to watch than this movie. He's lost his skills since Star Wars.
a movie that changed my life.......2007-05-29
When a film so knocks you off your feet everytime you watch it; when a film that is so sensually created and crafted with such magic as only the mastermind of Spielberg can create; when a film can evoke emotions in its watcher and choke them up, without trying to hide it in front of friends, family and the like; when a film can so catch the inner youth of angst when looking up into the nights sky and dreaming with every creative joint you can muster; when a film's cinematograhy can be so visually stunning and so imaginative, that you are completely in awe; that is when you can honestly sit around on some idle Sunday in May, and share the film again with people and everyone around you says they have goosebumps, and you know there is another reason to be alive. That is the way Close Encounters makes me feel; when I was 8, 18 and 28. Spielberg has created such masterpieces that have shaped our lives. I thank him. I thank him.
A must have for any Spielberg Fan!!!.......2007-05-18
Amazing. A visual masterpiece. If you like movies, you need to own this one. The Two-Disc Collector's Edition should be the only way this DVD is packaged and sold!
Glad I got the Collector's Edition.......2007-05-09
I remember watching this movie when it came out in the theaters and watching in on DVD again was almost as good. The 2-disc collector's edition was well worth it because it has all the behind-the-scenes extras such as the making of, deleted scenes, interviews, etc. The video and sound quality were very good. I expected the 30 year-old special effects to look "dated" but they still seemed surprisingly good. I would definitely recommend this movie if you are a sci-fi fan. As always, Amazon's delivery was speedy and the item arrived it excellent condition.

John and Olivia: BETRAYED!.......2007-06-19
There is only word one that fully does justice to this film: APPALLING.
John and Olivia were BETRAYED! WHY they would choose this movie? Rumor has it that they looked through over 30 scripts before settling on this one! Why they would let this first-time director decimate their careers in this way? It's utterly inexplicable. WHY anyone at any studio would take these two huge stars (though Olivia had been tarnished by Xanadu by this time) and TOSS THEIR CAREERS TO THE WIND on this turkey is... again, inexplicable. Why does this film exist?
The answer lies, I think, in Olivia's `rebranding' effort, trying to shift out of being wholesome and pure and be a bit of a vamp, which in retrospect seems like a big mistake (look what happened to Sheena Easton when she tried the same thing... and look at the continuing debacle that is Britney). This issue is examined in depth in my essay about the second part of Olivia's musical career. Everyone loves Olivia being pure and a bit cheeky. Look how adorable she was in Grease! It is just so incongruous for her to be a bank-robbing shiftless liar that it is impossible to get involved with her character. Okay, that sounds like there is even one `character' in this film, but you know what I mean.
There are several compelling issues raised by this film, such as:
Why does John Travolta walk like he has a broomstick [etc.... but ALL the way in] the whole movie? Did his mother tell him his posture was really bad or something?
Were general production values REALLY that low back in 1982? No wonder films are so expensive now.
WHO was the director related to that he was allowed to make this?
WHY, when Olivia's face is presented in the paper, in a loving 6' X 8' picture identifying her as a wanted bank robber, does she just walk around and attend her acting class as though nothing happened? Why does no one in her acting class mention it? Why don't the police show even the SLIGHTEST interest in apprehending her and recovering the money?
WHY do songs on the soundtrack blare inappropriately and completely without context throughout?
There are also a few notable moments that must be pointed out:
Please take note of the first shot of John Travolta in those stupendously ridiculous glasses. And it's only getting better...
Two words: `I'm Single.'
Please note how someone offscreen obviously CHUCKS the live cat at the pots in the kitchen! This would not be allowed these days!
You will obviously note that ethnic diversity is being DEPLOYED in the group of angels... though it doesn't seem to prevent them from making the black man a bus driver!
Please admire the architectural splendor of Olivia's hair, and her multitude of 80's fashion debacles, including the green ensemble with big gold pirate belt and turned-down suede boots (as they're walking down the street, soon before sampling the edible sunglasses).
Note that John is drinking Red and Olivia is drinking White, obviously because the producers thought this would appear `sophisticated.'
Of course there's the `Twist of Fate' MONTAGE, where Olivia gets to sport the appalling sunglasses after having eaten another pair.
Olivia's songs here definitely (and painfully) lack the John Farrar touch (who had composed all of her hits heretofore) and it's obvious where the problem lies.
Alas, what more can be said? Oh, I know... it was only on second viewing that I noticed that John and Olivia actually DIED a third of the way through the film (because John fell on Olivia from a great height, naturally), but were brought back to life by the angels to... continue the film. Now isn't it kind of sad that a film--ANY film--can be so poorly directed that the main characters can DIE and you don't even notice?
Now if you don't want to watch it after reading this, I don't know what's wrong with you.
