You might not get a thrill from the sight of Faye Dunaway and Marlon Brando throwing popcorn into each other's mouths, but that didn't stop this movie from gaining a new lease on life thanks to cable television and home video. It's a quirky romantic comedy about a mental patient (Johnny Depp) who claims to be Don Juan, the world's greatest lover, and he gets quite a few women to believe it's true. Brando plays the psychiatrist who tries to analyze his patient's apparent delusion, and Dunaway plays Brando's wife, who wants to inject some Don Juan-ish romance into their marital routine. Walking a fine line between precious comedy, wistful drama, and delicate fantasy, the movie gets a big dose of charm from its esteemed cast, with Depp delivering dialogue that would have sounded ludicrous from a lesser actor. This may not be a great movie, but it is guaranteed to put you in an amorous mood. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Johnny and Marlon together!.......2007-06-11

Any movie that has these two great actors in it is a must-see. Johnny Depp plays what is his sexiest and most romantic and charismatic role. Enough said.

5 out of 5 stars Should have won the Academy Award.......2007-06-04

A rare combination of superb acting by nearly every member of the cast from cameo to lead,
superbly crafted scenes, editing and direction. A story of life, love and the pursuit of incurable
romantic optimism that can teach us not to take ourselves so seriously.
    Enjoy it.

    5 out of 5 stars A Delightful Film.......2007-05-18

Don Juan Demarco certainly is not one of Johnny Depp's better roles but I cannot think of anyone who could have played his mental patient who believes he is (and actually is) the world's greatest lover. The film is a romantic comedy revolving around the overwhelming romantic effect Don Juan Demarco has just simply being around women and on his doctor (Jack Mickler played by Marlon Brando). As Don Juan relates his fantasy-like life and romantic awakening he influences his doctor to romance his wife, played by Faye Dunaway. It may be a bit of a stretch to see Marlon Brando as romantic at a weight of 300 plus pounds but there is a playful chemistry between Dunaway and Brando that is charming. The story of Don Juan's life is fantastic, including his duel with the father of the woman he has fallen in love with, being sold into slavery to a Sultana and living in a harem surrounded by women. What tension there is in the film centers on if Don Juan will be committed or released before his 10 days of observation lapse. In this, Dr. Mickler is certain that he will be released but faces opposition from all of the other staff doctors who would prefer to see Don Juan on medication.

The supporting cast turns in fine performances and includes Rachel Ticotin as Don Juan's mother. Overall this is a feel-good and entertaining film with some very good performances, and for that reason I am giving it 5 stars. I saw part of the movie on a cable channel and became caught up in the story enough to want to have a copy.

4 out of 5 stars Don Juan DeMarco.......2007-03-29

What can I say - Johnny Depp once again proves what a fantastic actor he is.

    4 out of 5 stars Good show.......2007-03-26

Even though i think Johnny Deppp is attractive, i won't launch into a swooning ramble of him, much to the relief of many, i suppose!
A very magical movie with no sense of reality whatsoever. I would say the plot is so fantastic, its only a step down from harry potter. Romance and fantasy mix well, so casanova and romance fans will be much impressed by this film.

The best-known of Errol Flynn's movies are already out there on DVD, so surely there can't be much left over to keep the second volume of the Errol Flynn Signature Collection from being an anticlimax. Except it's not. The new boxed set includes a splendid historical adventure, two aviation movies impressive in different ways, and a late swashbuckler that operates as a droll gloss on the star's persona. Plus (wait for it...) it also contains the best movie Errol Flynn ever made, and very likely his best performance as well.

Let's take that last one first. Raoul Walsh's Gentleman Jim (1942) is a great, boisterous gift box of a movie, a high-spirited biopic of late-19th-century prizefighter James J. Corbett. The setting is San Francisco in the Gay '90s, with Flynn/Corbett starting out as a brash, egotistical bank teller fast with his mouth and light on his feet. Given a chance to crash high society, he becomes a pugilist for the amusement of the nabobs, then sets out on a boxing career that will bring him glove-to-glove with the Great John L. ... Sullivan, that is, and portrayed with Walshian gusto by Ward Bond. Gentleman Jim is fragrant with period atmosphere, exhilarating in its feeling for space and back-slapping human contact, and so big-hearted and exuberant that it finally invites the audience right into the film. Alexis Smith--as a socialite who ribs Corbett mercilessly--and Flynn conduct a strikingly egalitarian mating duel. The supporting cast includes Jack Carson, Alan Hale, and the epically grumpy William Frawley, and the whirlwind montages are by future director Don Siegel. This is great fun--and a masterpiece to boot.

The adventure movie is The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936), Flynn's second star vehicle in Hollywood. A step up in scale and gloss from Captain Blood, this Michael Curtiz picture is historical poppycock but thrilling spectacle, with exotic doings in India and Asia Minor building to the horrendous siege of Chukoti, then a lateral move to the Crimea for the big Tennyson finish every perennial schoolboy in the audience has been waiting for. The Flynn of this swashbuckler-one-step-removed isn't the buoyant and boyish fellow we expect; he even comes in second to fellow Bengal Lancer (and dull brother) Patric Knowles for the heart of Olivia De Havilland. But he wears nobility well, and there's genuine tenderness in his performance. The camerawork and editing of the Charge will lift your heart rate, and the large supporting cast includes Donald Crisp, Nigel Bruce, Spring Byington, C. Henry Gordon, and Flynn pal David Niven.

Niven and Flynn are together again in The Dawn Patrol (1938), a memorable WWI tale of British airmen flying perilous missions in flimsy planes, and the flight commanders who have to send them out to do it. Basil Rathbone (in a rare departure from villainy in a Flynn movie) plays the tortured commandant whom hotshot Flynn will be obliged to succeed. Although this is the Dawn Patrol most people know, it's actually the remake of a 1930 Howard Hawks classic. The original has a starker feel (inseparable from its early-talkie creakiness), as if its airbase were at the edge of the known world. The more up-to-date Flynn version, directed by Edmund Goulding, is smoother entertainment, with a stronger supporting cast--but all the flying footage is from Hawks's movie.

The other aviation drama is Dive Bomber (1941), a big hit just before America's entry into WWII. Flynn plays it more sober than usual (no pun intended) as a Navy flight surgeon helping to lick the challenge of high-altitude sickness. There's no good reason for the movie to last 132 minutes, and both the macho griping of aviator Fred MacMurray and the garish treatment of the peripheral females (including Alexis Smith in her first featured role) get tiresome. But these are worth enduring for the breathtaking flight scenes in vivid Technicolor--which looks every bit as great as it must have in 1941. Director Michael Curtiz, in what would be his last film with Flynn, even sets up the ground scenes to include low-altitude flyovers.

The Adventures of Don Juan (1948), made near the end of Flynn's Warner years, is a footnote to the star's swashbuckling legacy and a not-very-inside joke on his reputation as real-life Don Juan; the picture is at least as interested in eliciting chuckles as serving up thrills. Director Vincent Sherman lacked the brio of Curtiz and the gusto of Walsh, but he ably steers the actor past self-parody to a reasonably graceful performance. Again, the real excitement is the ultra-radiant Technicolor--a perhaps inadvertent result of veteran film noir cameraman Woody Bredell lighting the movie as though he were still working that black-and-white territory. Viveca Lindfors supplies urbane love interest as the Queen of Spain, and Robert Douglas stands in for Basil Rathbone as villain-in-chief.

Consistent with previous Warner practice, all but one of the features in Volume 2 come packaged with a "Warner Night at the Movies" set of shorts: cartoons, comedy shorts, trailers for contemporaneous WB movies, and sometimes newsreels. The disc of Gentleman Jim also includes an audio-only bonus, a radio reenactment featuring Flynn and costars Alexis Smith and Ward Bond. Probably because of its two-hour-plus running time, Dive Bomber is accompanied only by its trailer and a brief documentary, in which historian Rudy Behlmer shares a choice anecdote about Mike Curtiz attempting to direct airplanes. Unfortunately, of Flynn and his various directors, only Vincent Sherman was still available to do a commentary track (on Adventures of Don Juan, which also includes Behlmer commentary); Sherman passed away in 2006 at the age of 99. --Richard T. Jameson

5 out of 5 stars Errol Flynn the Swashbuckler.......2007-06-26

Flynn had always been a favorite of mine when I was growing up. He was so great as a pirate, pilot, or whatever he took on as a role. I bought this collection primarily for "Dawn Patrol." As a retired fighter pilot, Vietnam and earlier era, all of us pilots watched Dawn Patrol while on air defense alert. I still feel that this movie catches the dilemma of being a pilot and then being a commander that has to send his pilots up to die. Much the same as in Twelve O'Clock High and Command Decision, the commanders all had the same experiences. The cast in this one is outstanding: Errol Flynn, Basil Rathbone, David Niven (another favorite actor of mine), Barry Sullivan, Donald Crisp, and on.. all wonderful! The experience level of the young pilots when they arrived for combat was horrendously low, accounting for their short-lived careers. If any one of them could survive a few weeks, gained experience, and did not get shot down, they stood a chance of getting a lot of missions. Some didn't make it past the first day! Good aerial combat scenes for the technology at the time. Special effects nowadays produce stunning aerial scenes as in the current movie "Flyboys." I liked Flyboys, but Dawn Patrol is still the best. The devil-may-care attitude of these young fighter pilots was one of the reasons I chose to go into the Air Force when I became of age.

This is a great study of the stresses of command and the responsibilities that come with it. I look forward to watching the rest of the movies in the collection.

4 out of 5 stars Not quite as impressive as Signature Collection, Vol. 1..........2007-06-08

A nice treat for ERROL FLYNN fans, but a bit disappointing when compared to the Signature Collection No. 1 which featured better special features and more intriguing commentaries than are offered here.

The major assets here are three Flynn films that have stood the test of time very well--THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE (teaming him with his favorite leading lady Olivia de Havilland and a sterling British cast); THE ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN directed with taste and style with a robust sense of humor by Vincent Sherman who also does some light narration; and GENTLEMAN JIM which features one of Flynn's most satisfying performances in a top-notch production directed by Raoul Walsh and featuring a wonderful supporting role by Ward Bond as John L. Sullivan.

Other than that, THE DAWN PATROL, while interesting as an early Flynn vehicle co-starring him with David Niven, is not quite up to classic status with its stock footage from the earlier version; and DIVE BOMBER, while it looks gorgeous in Technicolor, is way below par as a story of flight surgeons working on methods to control altitude problems for pilots battling black-outs due to cockpit pressures in 1941.

The extra features are just "okay" but nothing to get excited about. Flynn does prove in DAWN PATROL and GENTLEMAN JIM that he was a much better actor than critics ever acknowledged and his fans will certainly enjoy his work here.

ALEXIS SMITH is gorgeous in the Technicolored DIVE BOMBER, although her role is very peripheral, and does extremely well as his sweetheart in GENTLEMAN JIM.

And, of course, it's nice to see such a pristine print of THE CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE which features Flynn and Patric Knowles as brothers in love with the same young lady (Olivia de Havilland) and a cast that includes Donald Crisp, Spring Byington, David Niven and Nigel Bruce.

Sharp-eyed fans will notice that THE ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN includes some footage from both ROBIN HOOD and ELIZABETH AND ESSEX for filler material, but the footage is blended in remarkably well and the DON JUAN film has been given the lavish Technicolor treatment Warner Bros. bestowed on those earlier films.

A nice package, but far from perfect.

    5 out of 5 stars Pleasures revisited.......2007-05-18

These handsome DVD transfers confirm opinions held in some cases over 50 years. "Don Juan", while not as brilliant as some Technicolor restorations (Adventures of Robin Hood, Wizard of Oz) looks gorgeous, and the tongue-in-cheek commentary by 90 years plus director Vince Sherman confirms the impression of super teamwork at the always economical Warner studio of those days.

"Gentleman Jim" is one of Raoul Walsh's delightful sentimental comedies, and not surprisingly one of Flynn's own favourites. "Light Brigade" is a brilliant print , and far more spectacular than remembered - and what a cast. Mike Curtiz has his usual fun with battle scenes and spectacle, and the only black mark is for cruel treatment of the horses in the charge scene. "Dawn Patrol" is superbly cast and scripted, and directed with great flair by the often overlooked Edmund Goulding, settled into Warner's after being fired by Louis B Mayer, and doing a wonderful job on uncharacteristic material. Goulding's efforts are only a little spoiled by the poor special effects re-used from The 1930 Howard Hawks version, but the aerial battles stand up well. Flynn shows he really is an actor, magnificently supported by Rathbone, Niven and the ever-reliable Donald Crisp. Those were the days...

"Dive Bomber" is the least of the bunch, but no Curtiz picture is entirely without interest, and early Technicolor continues to be a revelation.

A great set, with the usual nutty extra features, Vitaphone shorts, newsreels, Merrie Melodies and so forth. Great entertainment, with Flynn at his considerable best.

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Flynn Fans.......2007-05-15

This set is worth owning for "The Adventures of Don Juan" alone. Flynn was the best swashbuckler ever. He makes the following believable: "...There is a little Don Juan in every man. Since I am Don Juan, there is a little more in me." Picture and sound across the board are excellent. The set gives you 5 films at approximately a 50% reduction from the individual price. Each film includes extras. An outstanding product at a very good price.

5 out of 5 stars Errol Flynn at his best!.......2007-05-15

This box set is a terrific addition to any film collection. Featuring 5 Flynn films, it picks up where the previous box set leaves off. Unfortunately, it doesn't feature the Warner Night at the Movies segment with Leonard Maltin like the first box set but it does have many extras such as cartoons and short subjects. I believe that all 5 of these films have been released on VHS at some point. I would like to see some of Flynn's lesser known (and previously unreleased on VHS) films be included in a Volume 3 some day. Wishful thinking, perhaps.

Keanu Reeves is completely wooden in this romantic misfire by Alfonso Arau (Like Water for Chocolate). Reeves plays a World War II vet who hits the road as a traveling salesman and agrees to help a desperate, pregnant woman (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon)--who is afraid to let her father (Giancarlo Giannini) see her condition--by pretending to be her husband. Most of the story takes place in the old man's vineyard, and Arau makes a life of swollen fruit, grape-stomping, sunlight, and tan flesh that looks amazingly erotic. But there are plenty of sillier distractions, such as the sight of farm hands chasing insects with flapping gossamer wings attached to their arms. Reeves is terribly self-conscious, while stalwart Anthony Quinn is memorable as the damsel's benevolent grandfather. --Tom Keogh

    Description

After returning from World War II, a young G.I. (Keanu Reeves) finds he has little in common with the wife he left behind. Disillusioned, he heads north to work as a travelling salesman where he meets the daughter (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon) of a wealthy vineyard owner (Giancarlo Giannini). On her way home, she is unmarried and pregnant. The young man gallantly offers to help by posing as her husband for one night, unaware that doing so will change both of their lives forever.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful! They don't make them like this anymore........2007-06-10

Do not pay attention to all those negative comments. This movie is simply a delight to watch. The story, the photography and the music are simply beautiful. I've watched it several times and continue to enjoy it. The spreading of the heat on the grapes with the butterfly-like wings and the grape stumping are my favorite scenes.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-06-02

Hubby saw this 1st and then insisted I watch too! Glad I did!! It is an excellent movie, despite views posted by others. It has depth, great photography and just a general all around GREAT movie. I loved it!

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely fantastic.......2007-05-18

The first time I watched this movie was at the theater. I thought the scenery had been painted. After all, no where on earth looks like that, right? Then I went to Napa for myself and, surprise!

I watch this movie a few times every year. The scenery is beautiful but so is the story. What orphan wouldn't want to be part of this wine-producing family? The grandfather is the star of the movie in my opinion. The female lead is luminous. Keannu's understated performance is well-suited to the character of a veteran shell-shocked from war and finding out that his war bride didn't care enough to read all the letters he sent her during the war.

If you want to know the definition of chivalry, watch and learn.

One of my two favorite movies of all time. I suddenly feel like going home, turning out the lights, snuggling up to my wife on the couch, and watching this work of art another time! I suggest you do the same.

    5 out of 5 stars So Romantic!.......2007-05-17

This movie is so romantic. Keanu Reeves is gorgeous. The Mexican family in this movie is such a treat to watch. I love the family dynamics and the fact that poor Keanu has no family and he wants to belong. The scenery of the vynard is spectacular.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Love Story...........2007-04-28

Keanu Reeves is a World War II veteran and a traveling salesman on a bus when he meets a pregnant woman (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon) on her way to Napa Valley to help her family with the grape harvest. She needs someone to pretend to be her husband at her family's vineyard, the ex-soldier agrees. However, her father can sense something is not right about the story and tries to prove that his daughter is hiding the real truth.

This movie is a mystical romance based on a 1942 Italian film of the same name.

I really enjoyed this movie...although it did bring tears to my eyes.

Sam Peckinpah knew he couldn't call a movie Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia and get away with it. That's why he did it. When he undertook this nakedly personal project, in self-exile in Mexico, the director was a deeply bitter man out of favor with critics, the media, and the Hollywood establishment, which had just released his Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid in a mutilated version. "Bring Me the Head..." sounded like the parody title of an ultraviolent Sam Peckinpah movie, and he flung it in our faces just as his onscreen surrogate tosses the titular object at the camera.

Thing is, the movie is a masterpiece--raw, shocking, beautiful, and brave--in which Peckinpah confronts his enemies and his own demons. Warren Oates plays a gringo piano-player stuck in Mexico who hears that some powerful men are willing to pay a bounty on a guy he knows. They don't know the guy is already dead, killed in a car accident. It'll be easy to exhume the trophy and collect the money--except that it will cost our seedy hero everything he has and ever wanted.

John Huston's Treasure of the Sierra Madre had always been a key legend for Peckinpah; this film is a subterranean re-imagining of it, with Oates as both the son of Fred C. Dobbs and the carnival-mirror reflection of Peckinpah himself. And Isela Vega's performance as the sainted whore Elita--bruised and worldly one minute, radiant and clear-skinned as a child the next--is an act of grace. --Richard T. Jameson

5 out of 5 stars Classic Dramatic Hardcore.......2007-06-03

This Title says it all and for $1,000,000 Cash the action and suspense fills this movie. Gritty, Intense, VIOLENT, DARK HUMOR! This movie was ahead of it's time. So was Director Sam Peckinpah.

5 out of 5 stars Still Holds Up.......2007-05-26

I watched this movie 2 days ago, and as usual it had a lasting effect on me. I would have to almost go out on a limb and say this may be Peckinpah's most complex and brilliant work; The storyline starts as a basic premise, then gets a little more complicated mid-way through. For a film made in the early '70's, the dialog still stands strong, the desert-like landscapes are captured perfectly, the acting/characters are are both commanding and quirky, which was something you did not see done alot in early '70's films, let alone done well. Most of the action comes to a boil in the last half hour or so, but I didn't really care. Oates takes control as the lead, which is nice to see; He is a charismatic leading tough guy type, and here he gets his moment; The German guys are quite amusing, esp. at the end when their relationship becomes a little more defined in a strange way. This is probably as close to a Tarantino movie as Peckinpah ever got, and it's just as worthy. 'The Getaway' was a good movie, but this one is soooo much better. On par with 'Straw Dogs' and 'The Wild Bunch', yet different.

5 out of 5 stars i expected to see ambrose bierce walk onto the set ..........2007-04-26

while i recently called "ballad of cable hogue" my favorite sam peckinpah movie, this outre take on revenge is undoubtedly his best, and imho one of the best of the 1970s. for those who havent seen it, the setup is the daughter of (presumably) mexican land tycoon has been impregnated by one alfredo garcia; the angry dad offers a huge reward to whomever delivers to him the severed head of alfredo, and down on his luck bum warren oates (think a seedier version of bogart in "sierra madre") is hired by a pair of "entrepeneurs" (gig young and robert webber) to do the dirty work. the irony: alfredo is already dead in a car accident. and that is the setup for where the movie really takes off in a spin of revenge, justice, betrayals, love, &c -- all against the sight and smell of the deteriorating severed head rotting in 100 degree plus heat. oates was always an underappreciated actor, but here he gives his best performance, matched by mexican actress isela vega as his doomed girlfriend. not a movie you want to watch frequently, but it is a masterpiece.

2 out of 5 stars Classic Sam Peckinpah!.......2007-01-30

It's been 30 years since I've seen this film on cable. I decided to re-visit this obscure film and see if I missed anything in the initial viewing. As it turned out, I didn't miss anything. It's pretty much the same, routine Sam Peckinpah film, filled with lots of blood, guts, bullets and slow-motion action. It's also a long, tedious film that is not one of his best, but will satisfy those who enjoy ultra-violence in their movies.

    5 out of 5 stars Alfredo garcia.......2007-01-23

Movie way ahead of its time. The violence is cuttiing edge for its time, a peckinpaw trait, but is tame by today's standard. First rate movie I think and very underated. I like warren oates and the support acting roles are well done. I think well worth the money.--5 stars

There's a fascinating film to be made about the pimp culture and the myth of the outlaw sexual entrepreneur. American Pimp, a slick and entertaining but rather timid documentary by filmmaking brother act Allen and Albert Hughes (Menace 2 Society, Dead Presidents) isn't quite it, but it's a captivating document nonetheless. Flashy, garrulous real-life characters with names like Charm, Rosebudd, Too $hort, C-Note, and the "internationally known" Bishop Don Magic Juan take over their interviews with silver-tongued charm, spinning self-aggrandizing, often contradictory stories of life in the trade. The Hughes never challenge those contradictions and give only token representation to the women in the life (who have either bought into the myth or are too cowed to say differently). Apart from a few unguarded statements by less cagey subjects, the film avoids the seedy flip side to the so-called benevolent relationship between pimp and "ho." More to the Hughes' point is the fluid relationship between media image (as celebrated in such blaxploitation classics such as The Mack and Willie Dynamite) and street image. Simultaneously embracing and decrying their outlaw status, these pimps transform themselves into peacocklike fashion statements inspired by the very images they find so denigrating. They are undeniably dynamic characters playing out a bizarre fantasy of wealth, power, and swaggering sexuality, but if the film shows the cracks in their masks, it never manages to reveal the men under the money or expose the fallacy behind the fantasy. --Sean Axmaker

Your opinion of this movie should not be influnced by the people it represents
Pimps suck, thats true but this documentary does not
It is a lot of spittin game, which sometimes comes out looking like the pimps are being glorified. But this is what these pimps are like, this is how they con and make their money, its a 24/7 thing for them.
Are they always telling the truth? of course not, but the documentary is an accurate representation of what some pimps are like (albiet on a superficial level) and the philosophy they preach

Regardless of your opinion on prostitution, pimps, streetwalkers, ho's, etc., this is a fantastic film. Incredibly insightful and very enlightening. It will truly open your eyes to a cultural phenonemon like no other. This film is a must see. Check your morality/superiority at the door, open your eyes and ears, and learn something.

There are a lot of pimp movies out there, but this is the one you need to see.

4 out of 5 stars Unique Perspective. .......2006-01-11

I really don't understand how anyone could call this a glorification of much of anything. There's no glamour here, just reality. American Pimp is exactly what it purports to be- an expose of the illicit world of prostitutes and their masters. It manages to surprise us by revealing that the hookers and pimps have a symbiotic relationship. It manages to surprise us by revealing that pimps have with their hookers a symbiotic relationship that is both quasi-paternal and quasi-marital. The "employees" of the dynamic often seem to not fear their employers who they instead idolize. This conflicts with our default position in regards to workers of the sex trade which is that they are objects of oppression and misfortune. We forget the fact that many of those who chose to sell their bodies do so by choice. As to whether we can label them as being masochistic personalities or not is another matter entirely, yet, even if this was the case, it would not contradict personal choice having something to do with their decision making. Many of the pimps on display here are not crazed drug addicts who batter women as a hobby. They possess varying levels of understanding regarding the business aspects of their profession. There is an elaborate subculture within this underworld that I first became aware of after reading about the life of Billie Holliday. There is a complexity and nuance which defies our stereotypes and, thus, mandates study.

For all you squares, lames and suckaducks out there hatin' on the pimp game are just mad cause you can't do it. Do you know how much of art pimpin' is? Hell, if pimpin' was so easy damn everybody would be doing it. A pimp gots to hard on his hoes, but show compassion espicially to his bottom bitch. Pimpin' aint never going to die its gone evolve and multiply. My uncle was a pimp, on the street they called Ruby Red, but we called him Uncle Reggie. I remember hearing him on the phone one day talking to one of his hoes and he said "Bitch if you ain't got my money prepare for the slaughter and when she get old enough I gone recruit your daughter!" I knew you had to be a powerful man to lock someone up without physical chains. In the immortal words of Milwaukee's Pimpin Ken (a legend) "When the last hoe fall, pimpin still gone be standin' tall!"

The Adventures of Don Juan is more fun than its reputation suggests, but it inescapably plays as a footnote to Errol Flynn's swashbuckling career. The heroic, athletic figure that lunged, leapt, and sashayed through Captain Blood, The Adventures of Robin Hood, and The Sea Hawk had thickened a bit thanks to middle age and, not to mince words, booze. Accordingly, and with an eye toward the star's real-life aptness to the role of Don Juan, the picture is at least as interested in eliciting chuckles as serving up thrills.

Flynn's creative partnerships with top action directors Michael Curtiz and Raoul Walsh were history. Vincent Sherman lacked their finesse and gusto, but he ably steers the actor past self-parody to a reasonably graceful performance. On the commentary track, Sherman (who died in 2006 at age 99) recollects that only once did Flynn arrive on set the worse for alcoholic wear; Flynn couldn't stand, so the director reblocked the scene with Don Juan seated while his bête noire, the Duke de Lorca (Robert Douglas in the Basil Rathbone part), strode around him deploying insults and rapier flicks. It's the best scene in the film.

For latterday viewers, the real excitement is the vivid Technicolor. Part of the reason is that cinematographer Woody Bredell, who shot such pungent noirs as The Killers and Phantom Lady, lit the movie as though he were still working that black-and-white territory. The effulgent hues of the Oscar-winning costumes reinforce the effect. In a footnote to a footnote, the film was edited by Alan Crosland Jr., whose father directed the landmark 1926 silent Don Juan--and that film's action climax on an outsized palace staircase is echoed here. --Richard T. Jameson

    Description

Errol Flynn's farewell to big-budget swashbuckling has him playing the legendary Don Juan, the Spanish lover who fights to save the Queen Margaret and her King from the treacherous machinations of her minister Duke de Lorca.

4 out of 5 stars Fynn still delivers the goods with style and grace - one last time.......2007-06-12

This film is better than some books and critics would have you believe. First off, the script is great with a lot of very funny lines. Flynn plays the part with a natural flair that perhaps very few actors could equal. The filmmakers are obviously playing off of Flynn's reputation off-script -- his infamous rape trial where he was accused of having getting it on with two underage starlets -- but it works here. The film doesn't take itself seriously and as a result it's fun to watch. One bizarre observation -- did Mike Myers get the idea of mini-me for his Austin Powers movies from watching The Adventures of Don Juan? The king has a mini-me and the similarity is unmistakable.

One note: I'd say Juan's chemistry with the queen is the only weak leak here. I just wasn't feeling it. She's no Olivia DeHavilland. Alan Hale is funny as always.

The DVD itself is very, very good looking. Nice to see this film finally get the transfer treatment it deserves.

errol flynn was beginning the downswing of his career when he returned here to the sort of film that had made him a star in the days before ww2. this lush technicolor feature underwent a long torturous history but resulted in a frequently fun romp, with viveca lindfors giving an inspired performance in the role that olivia de haviland would have essayed a few years earlier, and frequent flynn cohort alan hale (little john in "adventures of robin hood" among others) as a memorable leporello. alas what is missing here is a first-rate villain; i guess basil rathbone was tied up in solving mysteries around baker street. still, sumptuous to watch and a glorious max steiner score make it a must for swashbuckler fans.

5 out of 5 stars Flynns last truely great film.......2007-04-26

Errol Flynn had already hit a steep decline when Don Juan was eventually made. Origionally slated for 1939 (after the success of Robin Hood), it was held up by the war and was eventually made in 1948. By this time Flynn had been hit by a number of scandals, a life of hollywood hedonism, and a decline in his popularity at the box office due in large measure to him walking through his roles in the late 40s with and no longer caring about the scripts he was getting.

Thus it is a older, but thankfully still recognisable Flynn that was called to once again don period costumes after a break of eight or nine years where he hadn't made a single swash-buckler. And he really gives it his all. This is a first rate film, and perhaps the last great film in which he starred, and a film that occupies the rung just below his greatest films.

On this DVD the picture is pristine. Crystal clear. I would be tempted to say it is clearer now than when it first came out on the cinema screen. The colours are truely vibrant. The sound quality is also excellent.

The extras include the usual "Warners night at the movies" that, as a nice touch, includes the trailer for another Flynn film "Silver River".

But the highlight has to be the audio commentary from the films director Vincent Sherman with film historian Rudy Behlmer. Sherman shows that age hasn't affected his memory or his fondness for Flynn and although he probably only contributes about 30% of the talking his is by far the most interesting for Flynn fans.

This really is an excellent addition to the Flynn DVD collection. A first rate swashbuckler, excellent picture quality, and a nice set of well thought out extras. A must have for Flynn fans and those that love films of action/adventure.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Technicolor transfer and Terrific Fun for Errol fans!.......2007-04-13

This DVD is further proof why WB leads all studios with treatment of older films. The transfer is stunning..gloriously beautiful and breathtaking!
The bonus features on this and the other Flynn titles are fun and the HUGE bonus of a commentary by the recently departed Vincent Sherman is an incredible treat! It is amazing to get such a piece of film history so lovingly presented (cool graphics on the package and on the DVD ) for such a low price....THANK YOU WB!! Oh and Errol Flynn is still the champion swashbuckler a dozen years after Captain Blood!!! Johnny Depp can't hold a candle to this man....

4 out of 5 stars Don Flynn de Marana.......2007-04-10

The most eagerly awaited Flynn movie on DVD has finally arrived. Unavailable till now except on a VHS tape or on an obscure over priced Korean DVD it - thankfully - is back in the Warner Brothers stable where it belongs. The wait was worth it for the disc is simply pluperfect! With rich vibrant three strip technicolor and sharply defined images it is joy to behold.
Flynn is terrific in the role of the great lover and roue. With more than a nod perhaps to the actor's own life style not withstanding the part nevertheless was tailor made for him. And even though it was said that at the time he was slowing down and that he hit the booze during filming there is no evidence of it on screen. The man cuts a fine figure in his many fabulous costume changes throughout the picture. These costumes - designed by the great Travilla - won the 1948 Acadamy Award for Best Costume Design.

The supporting cast were well chosen too. Robert Douglas as Flynn's adversary is great as the evil Duke deLorca. His eyes blackened even more to make him look that bit extra villanous. Alan Hale is once again Flynn's faithful
sidekick but after 12 movies this was to be their final picture together. The female lead is played by the beautiful Swedish actress Viveca Lindfors as Queen Margaret and the one true love of Juan. Lindfors died 1n 1995 at the age of 75. Her final screen appearance was in "Stargate" (1994).

The movie is well directed by Vincent Sherman and the sets and atmosphere in the court scenes is really impressive. But now and then the picture gets bogged down with some palace intrigue until the film's famous set piece - the brilliant swordfight on the magnificent Palace staircase. It ranks as one of the finest duels in cinema history and Flynn will always be remembered for it
even though that leap with the knife was performed by stuntman and B picture actor Jock Mahoney.

And of course there is the music by Max Steiner! One of his very best scores. Particularly outstanding is his music for Juan's Parade into London with its masterful use of bells and chimes, The Ballade which accompanies Juan's various balcony climbings,
his driving action music for the fight in the Palace and the gorgeous love theme he wrote for the scenes with Juan and the Queen. Interestingly, Flynn's old
swashbuckling composer the great Erich Wolfgang Korngold (who had served Flynn exceptionally well with outstanding scores for "Captain Blood", "Adventures Of Robin Hood" and "The Sea Hawk") was originally slated to score Don Juan as far back as 1945 but by the time the picture went into production he had left Hollywood and returned to his birthplace,
Vienna. As brilliant a composer as Korngold was it is hard to imagine that he could have topped the magnificent score Steiner gave us.

So quite a wonderful disc all round with extras consisting of a commentary by
director the late Vincent Sherman and Flynn authority Rudy Behlmer, a trailer and some instantly forgettable old fashioned shorts but the movie is all, so enjoy. En Garde!!!

Bounce has all the deft charm and breezy good looks you'd expect from a romance starring Ben Affleck and Gwyneth Paltrow, but under the surface beats the poisoned heart of an independent film just going through the motions. Affleck plays Buddy Amaral, a successful ad exec with an empty life. In a Chicago airport, he meets Greg Janello (Tony Goldwyn), a failed playwright going home to his family and a corrupt job as a TV writer. Buddy, angling for a one-night stand with a fellow passenger, gives Greg his ticket, but feels bad when he discovers the plane crashed and the guy died. He feels so bad, in fact, that when he gets out of rehab a year or so later, he decides to give the guy's widow, real estate agent Abby (Paltrow), commission on the sale of a building for his business, a sale she's not qualified to make. They start dating. She quickly forgets her initial impression of him as a creepy stalker. Near the end of the movie, she finds out her first impression was correct and she dumps him. It's the right decision but one that the movie won't allow her to make. Instead her best friend and her kids convince her to stay with the guy. Eeeesh. Affleck is good at playing privileged and shallow, Paltrow does what she can with the prepackaged grief of a widow, Joe Morton has very little to do as Buddy's business partner (but he does it well), and Johnny Galecki shines in a very small part as Buddy's assistant. Good performances in a rather creepy film by the guy who made The Opposite of Sex. --Andy Spletzer

    Description

Abby Janello (Gwyneth Paltrow) is a struggling real estate agent with two young sons. She slowly befriends Buddy and falls in love with him while Buddy struggles with the guilty secret of his connection to her husband's untimely death which could destroy their relationship.

5 out of 5 stars warm and sweet.......2007-03-04

This film was a surprise to me. As the blurb on the DVD case said, this was a romantic movie with great chemistry between the two co-stars, I expected to see a cute movie about two beautiful people falling in love. but I was pleasantly suprised by the depth of the movie.

The basic plotline is this: Ben Affleck plays a vibrant, young man with a promising career named Buddy who gives up his plane ticket to a man he meets at the airport for a night with a beautiful blond. As fate would have it, the plane has a deadly crash killing all the passengers on board including Buddy's acquaintance. To make up for the guilt, Buddy seeks out the widow of this acquaintance, played by Gwyneth Paltrow. Although, Buddy's intentions were merely to help the family and disappear, in the midst of his guilt, he sees past the grief and falls in love with this beautiful woman.

I believe the script, the directing, and the acting were all very successful in this film. Gwyneth Paltrow and Ben Affleck were very believable and the gradual growth in their relationship was very real. Gwyneth's performance was quite amazing. Peronally this is one of my favorite performances by her. She allows Abby to be vulnerable and emotional yet her strength and virtues are consistent throughout the movie. The credit goes to both Gwyneth and the write/director, Don Roos for this. The director seemed to have paid much attention to the details, especially with the two characters in their behavior.
    Five stars!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Film.......2007-02-26

Too much of a four-corner job at last, still the director made an excellent go at a film that dealt with strong human values in a romance. The acting was excellent. I never cease to be amazed at Gwyneth Paltrow's abilities as an actress, among films like Bounce, Shakespeare in Love, and Proof. Ben Affleck - a few too many tears perhaps, but a well thought-out role with finely developed feeling. I sense Americans want more one-liners and laughs and this film didn't play that comedic line. Not a great film by any means, it is solid and a worthwhile watch. I gave it five stars for the four-star quality and the effort to do something different.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-01-18

I loved this movie! The characters are believable, and fun to watch. The story is sad, but there are uplifting moments. the child actors are great, and add to the film.

5 out of 5 stars Gee. I'd Mis My Flight For A Date With Natasha Henstridge!!.......2005-05-29

In this movie we see Buddy, played by Ben Affleck who gives up his seat on his flight so he can have sex with the character played by the GORGEOUS Natasha Henstridge who we last saw in Species. What Buddy actually does for a living is anybody's guess. He seems to spend a lot of time drinking Scotch and talking on his cell phone in the back seat of a limo. Sadly the plane that Buddy would have been on crashes and then he is on some sort of "Redemption Hunt" to find the widow of the pasenger that he gave his seat too. Somebody should tell Buddy there is a whole world of difference between being "Attentive" and Stalking. I give this movie 5 stars because I do like Ms. Henstridge.

3 out of 5 stars Have to agree..........2005-05-13

Ben is one of my favorite actors...but this film was not one of his best...but it was not terrible...I have to give him that! The plot was interesting, but very unbelievable to say the least!! I found Gwenyth's character to be just a down right bleep!! I have a problem with the fact that Buddy decides he is going to do whatever he can to find this poor widow, and tracks her down...STALKER!! Falls in love??? Please!! But I have to say that Ben's character (Buddy) poured his heart out to this ungreatful Abby!!
Abby lies about her husband death...claims they got divorced...just cause it sounds better...and "everyone is divorced". BLAH!! Save it baby!! But when Buddy tells her something...the story changes!! I am not saying that this picture is a waste of time to watch...but just be aware that the script is not consistent. Good actors...with little to work on...have to agree with other reviews (for the most part).

The audio also sounds distorted when played directly through my TV speakers. However, when I play this through my stereo system it sounds fine, you just have to keep the volume turned down to compensate for the high volume level recorded.

Baywatch alum David Hasselhoff stars in the dual title roles of Jekyll and Hyde: The Musical, Frank Wildhorn and Leslie Bricusse's version of Robert Louis Stevenson's gothic horror classic. The story of the brilliant scientist who uncovers the good and evil aspects of the human heart was a pay-per-view event on the Broadway Television Network, filmed on stage before a live audience. If that audience had seen a lot of Broadway shows, they probably didn't see much they hadn't seen before, but its familiar plot and accessible pop score give Jekyll and Hyde a certain appeal, especially for musical novices.

Notable songs for Coleen Sexton and Andrea Rivette (as good girl Lucy and bad girl Emma, respectively) include "Someone Like You," "Once Upon a Dream," and the duet "In His Eyes." Hasselhoff cuts an imposing figure but is somewhat unsteady in such anthems as "This Is the Moment," which are tailor-made for big voices (for example, Linda Eder, Wildhorn's wife and the creator of the Lucy role). --David Horiuchi

    Description

The longest-running show in the history of Broadway's Plymouth Theatre, Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical brings new life to Robert Louis Stevenson's classic story of romance and the epic battle between good and evil. A whirlwind odyssey pitting man against himself is set in motion when the brilliant Dr. Jekyll's medical experiment backfires, giving life to his evil alter ego, Edward Hyde. The show won a legion of repeat visitors (dubbed by the press as "Jekkies") and spawned hit songs on the pop charts with "Someone Like You" and "This Is the Moment."

    5 out of 5 stars a fantastic show.......2007-06-09

this show was one of the best presentations i have seen of this specific show. when i ordered the movie i was very cautious to how it was made and presented. however, after i watched the movie, i was thrilled on the success of there show. they did great and everyone should see this film.

    4 out of 5 stars I can't believe it, but this isn't that bad.......2007-05-01

Well sure Hasselhoff's voice isn't strong enough for some of the songs, but overall this isn't that bad a job. Mr. Hasselhoff does himself proud with this production. Most of the songs are good and the cast is very good. While this isn't the best musical i've ever seen,I did enjoy the show and my wife and I had a very good time watching it.

5 out of 5 stars Hasselhoff Pulls It Off.......2007-04-23

I had to give this version a chance. David Hasselhoff has an incredible singing voice and to give the performance he does in Jekyll and Hyde - The Musical is very impressive. But I admit I was a bit frustrated when I saw him practically pass out during his major schizo song. When that bed came in and he was still walking offstage, you could tell that song took quite a bit out of him.

Colleen Sexton as Lucy Harris. Wow wow wow wow wow! She brought quite a bit to the table, and she was in incredible company with the distinguished performers she shared the stage with including Andrea Rivette as Emma Carew. Sexton's and Rivette's performance of In His Eyes was outstanding. Not better than the original performances that predecessed Hasselhoff, but definitely is a ranking force in it's own. I would rank this second next to the Dream Cast concert of Les Miserables starring Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean.

This is the moment. Buy Jekyll and Hyde and give it a chance. You wont be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars The performance is pretty good; the problem is the vehicle........2007-03-13

Despite much negative opinion, this performance is in many respects not half-bad. I must confess that a good deal of negative criticism focussed on David Hasselhoff seems a lot more like grudge fulfillment. Still, others have turned in better performances. The question is, performances of what? Aye, there's the rub.

"Jekyll and Hyde" occupies the musical and dramatic world of "Phantom of the Opera" and "Sweeney Todd" - without being anywhere as good as either. Dramatically, although the musical follows a fairly single-minded and coherent line, it seems jumpy and fragmented because of the jumpy and fragmented changes of sets. We might go over the plot at this point - except that here we have classic of English literature which ought to be familiar to every person who gets into high school. If you haven't read Stevenson's tale, go read it and don't expect a Cliff's Notes version of it here.

Musically, "Jekyll and Hyde" is, in a word, boring. The music gropes in vain to achieve melody but in every instance fall short to one degree or another. The notes meander within traditional tonality, but fail to leave a lasting impression. That some of the numbers achieved a fleeting popularity is more a tribute to marketing than to any inherent musicality. No amount of belting or breathless intensity can give these tuneless tunes any more than an underachieved dramatic impact.

It's not an uncommon opinion that the problem with this version of the musical is that it stars David Hasselhoff. This is, to a large extent, a bum rap. I will admit that comparing the sound track here with the CD of the original Broadway production (starring Robert Cuccioli), there's no doubt that the original version is more satisfying. That doesn't mean that Hasselhoff doesn't turn in a solid performance - he does - nor that he doesn't have moments of chewing up the scenery. In fact, in many respects, Hasselhoff is the best thing about the whole production.

The star invests his rýle(s) with sincerity and authenticity. I suspect this gets past some viewers who let themselves get distracted by surfboards and talking cars. This part has been better played and will be better played, but Hasselhoff gives the audience their money's worth nonetheless. He clearly delineates Hyde from Jekyll, although his bag of tricks is rather limited - he sometimes manages a really chilling manic look to Hyde, but not as often as he should. Cuccioli's command of his voice serves him sell in this regard, but Hasselhoff's voice shows little difference between his 2 characters. His singing voice, as it happens, isn't bad. It's certainly up to the singing-in-the-shower sort of voice that we often hear in American musicals.

Hasselhoff's part dominates the musical, so that all the other characters are relatively minor. They are, however, played professionally in all cases, giving Hasselhoff a firm backing. I don't see, however, any one performer to single out as being anything but good-but-not-great.

I have already alluded to the physical presentation of the production. The many sets tend toward darkness rather than brightness. As a continuing factor, this becomes dreary. One wonders why we didn't start with well-lighted sets and gradually move toward darker ones. In addition to the less-than-useful dimness, the frequent set changes make the musical seem fidgety. Fortunately, the musical itself shows a single-minded devotion to its story line and manages - barely - to preserve a sense of unity and linear development.

On the whole, "Jekyll and Hyde" is entertaining on one hand and a bit of a chore to watch on the other. It tries very hard to ingratiate itself, succeeds in part, but in the end fails owing to the grisly nature of its development and ending. Nonetheless, it's a fine effort and worth seeing. Even the flaws are instructive.

5 out of 5 stars Great show, great music, deep on many levels. .......2007-03-13

This is a great performance of a great play, with terrific songs. It has meanings in many levels, and much to stimulate thought about love, duty, addiction, violence and twists of fate, and personal character.

1 out of 5 stars Pimping Is Easy, And No One Should Do it.......2007-06-24

This is a complete and total waste of footage. Anyone who feels the need to glamorize pimps, who are ALL women hating, lying losers, needs to take a belt off and beat themselves with it. I saw this once on cable and it left a bad taste in my mouth. There is NOTHING glamorous or attractive about a group of ugly, unintelligent males parading around bragging about how they abuse these women. This movie stars the biggest assortment of losers ever to be assembled onscreen. These pimps are ridiculous. If these morons can be pimps, then it MUST be easy. They couldn't get me to sell a pack of gum for them, let alone my body.I actually give this crud zero stars.

    4 out of 5 stars 2nd best Pimp DVD.......2006-10-24

This film makes a good combination to own with the American Pimp DVD.

AP is more polished bling-bling presentation and more educational interviews with Pimps, whereas PUHD is lower budget and seems to catch the Pimps just showing off to the camera, spouting cliches and not go as in depth in knowledge with interviewing them. So what does PUHD offer?

But PUHD has plenty of footage of the men and women in action and is a MUST HAVE along with American Pimp DVD, Pimp and Naked Soul by Iceberg, Space Age Pimping by Paradise, Gentleman Pimp by Stonewall.

4 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Very Scary.......2006-04-16

I've actually seen both the HBO series directed by Brent Owens and the move "American Pimp" and I'd say that they compliment each other quite well. But, the Owens' documentaries go further in showing in great detail what the lives of the women who work for these pimps are like.

The pimps are allowed to just speak. There's no leading no constant interjection from "journalists" moralizing, just the pimps. And whether they know it or not, we see past all of the outrageous talk and gaudy clothes. We see men who might have been something worthwhile, men who are cruel, men who are outright sociopaths, all using women in the most cold and de-humanizing ways possible, and we see that they are very real. And that is very scary.

For those who've actually seen this documentary I'd suggest seeing "Hookers at the Point" as well. The same un-flinching look given to the pimps is turned towards the prostitutes, and believe me after seeing it one thing will be clear. With the prostitutes descriptions of the violence that they've suffered through and the frank portrayal of the crude and quite ugly sex that they must perform, there is one thing that you can never say again. You can never say that there is anything remotely glamorous or "Pretty-Woman-Like" about prostitution.

5 out of 5 stars You Got Your No-Nonsense Pimp, You Got Your Gorilla Pimp, and You Got Your Drug Pimp...........2006-01-20

Call me a gorilla pimp after seeing this "pimpumentary." Mr. Whitefolks is simply the greatest individual ever to walk this earth. "A Professional gentleman of leisure" as he states on his answering machine message, the story of a white pimp making it in a brothers' world is simply too great to be ignored. Other characters of note include Don the Magic Juan, Snooky (who keeps his hoes walking with they heads down---nice touch), Ice-T, Pimpin' Ken, and a female pimp Big Lex. Get all up in this piece like chicken grease and buy dis beatch ASAP!

    Movie Quotes

"Hoes can just smell a pimp."--Snooky

    5 out of 5 stars Pimpin ain't easy.......2005-11-27

Living in Glasgow Scotland we don't have the same exposure to "the game" as the folks in the US do.

The Ho's here in the U.K. by and large are heroin addicts and to be honest i wouldn't touch them with your's (if you know what i'm saying). They are skanky, sleazy and messed up. Their pimps are what we call scum (or trailer park trash to folk in the USA) and have NONE of the style, pizazz or character of the guys in this video.

Even the ho's in this film come across as at least able to form a coherent sentence and don't sound (like the ones over here) like they've just injected themselves with a gram of smack.

This is the crux of this film, the Mac's are so cheezy yet they've got character by the bucket load. Sure they epitomise every sterotype about how a pimp looks but as Pimpin Ken said "a ho chooses a pimp". The Bishop says "women love colour" and he's right these guys have a style of their own which garish or not is still style.

Some of the quotes in this film are great especially Mr Whitefolks "Let's see Bill and Hilary Clinton when we have the 1 million Mac march and come on down to Washington. Then what they gonna do?. Who the gonna call? Ghostbusters?!!"
    Absolutely hilarious.

One frightening thing though is when The Bishop talks about dedication just after he talks about pimp arrest. The story about the Ho in Hospital with bullet wounds looking up and saying she wanted to get out of her bed and go an get his money. What sort of control do these guys have over these women that they would take a bullet and still wanna see that man getting paid. It's scary to think about.

That said there was the right blend of what pimps used to do (beatings etc) and how it is now to make it reasonably balanced.

Oh and there are some FFIIIIINNNEEEE women in this film. Especially the georgous dancer wearing the black bikini style outfit with the green tassles during the Player's ball. She is so hot.

Really this is a must see for the colourfull outfits and commentaries especially from Whitefolks, Don Juan and Pimp Snooky "you know what i'm saying there's some real pimpin goin on, know what i'm saying". Even if some of the Mac's i didn't understand a word they were saying
