Written and directed by actor Tim Robbins (who also plays the title role), this 1992 mock documentary about an upstart candidate for the U.S. Senate is smart, funny, and scarily prescient in its foreshadowing of the Republican revolution of 1994. Bob Roberts is a folksinger with a difference: He offers tunes that protest welfare chiselers, liberal whining, and the like. As the filmmakers follow his campaign, Robbins gives needle-sharp insight into the way candidates manipulate the media. While the film follows Roberts's campaign, it also covers a fringe journalist (Giancarlo Esposito), who may have dug up the kind of dirt to push Roberts's campaign off the rails. Robbins captures the chilly insincerity of this right-wing populist and fills his cast with terrific supporting players, including Alan Rickman as the campaign's shadowy financier and Susan Sarandon and Peter Gallagher as a pair of airhead TV news anchors. --Marshall Fine

It's still one of the sweetest kisses onscreen, up there with Bergman and Grant, Bogey and Bacall: the moment when pampered purebred Lady and streetwise mongrel Tramp, sharing a moonlit plate of spaghetti in an alley behind an Italian café, unknowingly slurp the same strand, and suddenly find their mouths meeting in surprise and tenderness. Ah, puppy love. Lady and the Tramp is a delight of animation and surprisingly deep character development, given that the stars are all dogs. Lady, an adorable Cocker Spaniel, feels neglected when her owners become distracted by the pending birth of a baby. But the last straw is clueless Aunt Sarah's appearance with her conniving Siamese cats (among Disney's most creatively evil villains), who wreak havoc on Lady's blissful home life. Soon Lady is off on an adventure in the streets, where the savvy Tramp takes her under his paw. The lessons of friendship and loyalty, of integrity--not to mention trusting in the kindness of strangers--ring true to delighted children and adults alike. And unlike many Disney films, there's no real violence, only challenges that smart dogs (including a tough-talking vamp named Peg, voiced sublimely by Peggy Lee, who also wrote the songs), banding together, can tackle. The animation is terrific; the scene where we first meet Tramp shows him rinsing off under a pipe, and his subsequent shaking-off of the water follows the detailed rippling up and down his back that any dog lover will recognize. And is there any song more romantic than "Bella Notte"? Bellissima! --A.T. Hurley

Lady and the Tramp.......2007-06-26
One of Disney's most endearing family classics, "Tramp" is a marvel of lively animation, bright voice acting, and sensational songwriting, courtesy of the inimitable Peggy Lee (who also voices the sinister twin kitties, Si and Am.) Watching a pampered female pooch fall for a declassé but charismatic male doggie is not only fun but enlightening about the magic of mutual attraction. And the famous spaghetti-slurping scene leading to a surprise first kiss is charming no matter how many times you view it. Highlights include the vamp-y "He's a Tramp" and "Siamese Cat Song."
It's Lady And The Tramp And We Love It!.......2007-06-25
LADY AND THE TRAMP is my favorite of all the Disney animated films. It has great memorable characters from the down on her luck show dog Peg (voiced by the fabulous Peggy Lee who also voices a couple of other characters) to Aunt Sarah's sly pair of Siamese cats. The music is also among the best from Disney with "Bella Noche", Quiet As a Snowflake" and especially "He's A Tramp" with the wonderful dog pound chorus as well as a couple of other memorable songs. The film touts the virtures of both pure bred dogs like the beautiful sweet Cocker Spaniel Lady and also the advantages of mixed breeds like her clever Heinz 57 mate Tramp. This movie is a must for dog lovers and can be enjoyed by all ages.

Just as I remembered it with my son (now 42)and enjoyed equally with my grandkids (3 & 5)
Lady and the Tramp.......2007-05-18
Lady and the Tramp was one of my favorite movies in childhood. Watching it again only supports my endeared feelings I have had for so many years. I am glad I was able to watch, go back and experience like I did when I was a child. This movie, I will always hold dear. The talent has transcended into this decade and has kept the meaning of romance and true love alive with the music and animation.
Sweet Disney classic.......2007-05-15
Gorgeous Disney classic film. An original, beautiful story in a new format that can't be missed. The extras make this a very special edition.

Can a wild horse with a bad attitude and a not-quite-wild but pretty darn sullen teenage girl with a bad attitude be the best things that ever happened to each other? Though we guess the answer pretty early on in Flicka, it doesn't diminish the feel-good family film one bit. The film is a remake of the 1947 My Friend Flicka itself based on the bestselling (and still riveting) novel by Mary O'Hara, and starring a young Roddy McDowall as the aimless teen hero. This 2006 update changes the hero to a heroine, Katy (Alison Lohman), though the dynamic is similar, and in some ways makes the appeal of the film broader. After all, young girls love their horses, and Katy's moxie and determination, as she opens her heart to the wild filly, a touchingly and humanly conveyed. As Katy struggles with her relationship with her gruff dad (given an excellent performance by country star Tim McGraw), she finds she can gain confidence and be the person her father wants her to be--solely by being herself as she connects with Flicka the horse. The cinematography is stunning, and showcases a part of America that once was seen and celebrated often in films, and lately so rare as to be precious. --A.T. Hurley

Lame Remake.......2007-06-13
Whoever green-lit this remake needs to be horsewhipped. Now I don't expect every viewer to be coming from my perspective--I read the 1941 novel My Friend Flicka, watched the 1943 movie many times throughout my childhood and, like the protagonist of the story, broke my own horse to ride. However, I do expect that anyone with an iota of horse sense will immediately agree that this is one lame remake.
The basics are in place: a horse-raising family living in Wyoming struggles to hold onto their ranch while their dreamy youngest child latches onto a wild mustang and becomes convinced that their fates are intertwined. There, the similarities end.
In the update, 12-year-old Ken has morphed into 16-year-old Katy (Alison Lohman), and Flicka, once a delicate sorrel filly we met as a foal and watched grow into a racehorse, is portrayed by a fully-grown, massive black male horse (though he is still referred to as a "she"). Apparently, once Ken lost his manhood, he also lost his ability to ride: Katy falls off of Flicka so many times, head injuries are the only explanation for her incredibly stupid behavior throughout the movie.
If you are hoping, at least, for any semblance of authenticity when it comes to the horsey scenes, forget it. For months, Flicka lives in a roundpen with no feeder, no water bucket and no shelter. Katy has no idea how to properly break and train a horse, but of course Flicka--after a stint in the rodeo, no less--plods along like she's a Pony Rides veteran.
Add to all of the above: over-wrought performances (even the horse overacts!), ding-bat dialogue, and a never-ending barrage of New-Agey songs set to dramatic montages, and you've got the "Flicka" remake. No wonder two horses died during the production of this film--they probably committed suicide.
The only saving grace for this DVD is a delightful photo slide-show of real girls and their horses, which plays out through the end-credits. It's much more stirring and heartwarming than the film itself.

Flicka.......2007-06-13
This heartwarming, breathtaking, exciting, PG rated, DVD movie is one of the best I've seen. Featuring Alison Lohman, Maria Bello and country music star Tim McGraw. If you country lovers are excited already, then get ready for an even bigger excitement!
16-year-old Katy McLaughlin (Lohman) finds a black mustang in the mountains where her family's ranch is set. Katy falls in love with the horse and wants it to be hers. Katy sets out to find and rope the mustang. She then sets out on the struggle to tame the horse. But it's not going to be easy this mustang is pure wild! Taking days to tame, Katy's not going to give up. Katy soon reach's the heart of the horse. Flicka meaning beautiful young girl, is what Katy names her precious horse. Together, Flicka and Katy saddle out for adventures to come. Her and Flicka know that they must become a hard working team in order to stand up to their challenges and face them. But one challenge throws them off. The two meet up with a mountain lion when traveling through the woods to home. Both scared and not knowing what to do. What will happen to Flicka and Katy? Your going to have to see the movie to find out.
I thought this was a great movie! The best! When I heard about it I knew I had to see it. And when I did I loved it! The end was so sad. Movie's never make me cry no matter how sad, but this one did make me cry. This movie took me on an adventure, and I hope it takes you on one too.
I recommend this movie for country lovers, ranchers, and horse lovers because this movie has this all packed in it. I recommend you see Flicka.

I was so disappointed in this movie, being a great fan of Mary O'Hara's original book. Tim MCGraw was better than I expected---everything else was worse!
boycott my dead flicka.......2007-06-05
I made the mistake of renting this and watched a few minutes -- only to discover with a little online cruising that I should have done ahead of time that two horses were killed in the making of the movie. I didn't watch any further. Who can consider being entertained by any movie knowing animals were tortured and killed during the making of it? It's nauseating and disgusting.

Love it!.......2007-05-10
This is an AWESOME movie! I've looked for it everywhere and yes, I may be silly for saying this was an awesome movie, but I was a kid when it came out so, blame that! Quick shipping, perfect quality! Will definitely buy from these guys again!
Movie Review.......2007-05-09
If you love Super Mario, then this is the movie for you. It's a live action movie staring the Mario Brothers!
This Ain't No Game!.......2007-04-27
Let's face facts, the 90s had its weird moments and continual adaptations of games and tv shows was a common trend as much as it is now then. The exception is the adaptations were a lot looser.
In this case, SUPER MARIO BROS. makes a unique adjustment in that it stretches the game series into a different world and tone. Given it's been a while since I've seen it after watching it again for the first time in a while, I find that the movie has some fairly decent character moments, but at the same time. I find myself wondering how it is that they mixed all the concepts of the game together and came out with this.
It's not the best movie in the world, but it's fun for what it is.
"Super Mario Brothers"--okay film, disappointing DVD.......2007-04-07
I don't really know what to think about this movie. I admit, it was very entertaining and wacky and sometimes even witty, but I'm scratching my head in wondering why the filmmakers didn't make this film a tiny bit closer to the videogame.
The actors who portrayed Mario and Luigi (whose mustache is absent from this film) were, for the most part, good. The special effects were convincing, and the cheesy humor worked actually very well.
But I'm confused. King Koopa is a human (!). This is probably an excuse to include Dennis Hopper, who appeared in almost one hundred movies in the 1990s (and I'm not kidding). The minions had weird shrunken lizard heads. Princess Peach, the classic damsel-in-distress, is replaced with Daisy. Almost everything in the film is the opposite of the videogame. The only real thing that actually resembles a character from the original game was the Bomb-Omb (or whatever it was called--I'm blanking out on the name...).
Anyhoo, "Super Mario Brothers" was just okay. It was entertaining and fun, but too much that we know and love from the video-game is missing, and that kind of distracts you from the experience. Hopefully, in years to come, a REAL "Super Mario Brothers" movie will be released--one that captures the spirit and the imagination of the videogame that inspires it.
I'm also wondering why there were absolutely no bonus features on this DVD. Maybe some behind-the-scenes footage or deleted scenes, but no. Perhaps a future two-disc anniversary edition will remedy this (though it's doubtful).
Hardly like the games but still good.......2007-04-05
I thought this was a great film. I admit it's different from the games. I wasn't born when the movie came out but I rented it. The film is a little weird at times. Like that evolution thing. The special effects are convincing enough. There's something I don't get. The film was relaesed in 1993. That's the same year jurassic park was released and it used cgi. So was this film made before CGI or what? If it did use cgi that would have been great! The idea of changing Bowser from a fire breathing monster into a human is silly. The film would have looked better if it was animated like the tv series so the can animate the enimies which would be easier. Too bad there isn't a sequel. It would have been nice.

Product Description
Steven Spielberg's deeply flawed but sporadically fun and moving update of the Peter Pan legend stars Robin Williams as the grown-up Pan, a corporate-takeover type who must embrace his old identity in order to save his kids from Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman). The stars put on a good show, including Hoffman's read of Hook's hysterical personality, Julia Roberts mini-turn as a tiny Tinker Bell, and Maggie Smith's touching performance as the aged Wendy. The visual contrast between the adult Pan's bustling outside world and the insulated fantasy of Neverland is striking, but Spielberg's ideas about the Lost Boys--politically correct in their ethnic diversity, energetic on skateboards--are contrived and cheapening. On the plus side, the story's theme about adults finding their innocence again through their children is very touching (though some people have found it cloying). If you can look beyond the glaring problems, there's plenty to like here. --Tom Keogh

This film warms my heart, makes me laugh, provides some good points for teaching and sermon illustrations. I am surrounded by people who have forgotten who they are. Tinkerbell's push to help Peter remember has deeper meaning than perhaps it's meant to have, but it's true nonetheless.
embarrassing.......2007-02-28
Seldom has so much talent (and MONEY!) been wasted on such unentertaining silliness.
Robin Williams, Dustin Hoffman, Maggie Smith, Julia Roberts, Bob Hoskins--it is painful to watch them cope with the bad writing, overemoting, over-elaborate (and dull) sets, and just general aimlessness of this picture.
Everybody works REALLY hard, and the strain shows.
The fun seems forced, the situations pointless, the message ham-handed, and the music--oh, my goodness--the music is the most syruppy mess this side of "Pearl Harbor."
Even the special effects are less than special.
All in all, very uncomfortable to sit through.
A Fun and Amusing Continuation of a Wonderful Tale!.......2007-02-18
Peter Pan left Neverland and grew up. He married Wendy's granddaughter and had two kids. He is a succesful lawyer and makes almost no time for family. That's where Hook picks up. Steven Spielberg has created another wonderful film that is very entertaining and has an all-star cast, including Dustin Hoffman (Hook), Robin Williams (Peter Banning/Pan), Julia Roberts (Tinkerbell), and Maggie Smith (Wendy). The story begins when the an adult Peter Pan visits Wendy in London. His company is giving a wing in the local hospital to help Wendy adopt and care for orphans. Peter, his wife Moira, and Wendy go to a special ceremony, and when they return they discover that Peter's two kids have been kidnapped by Captain Hook. Peter must join up once again with Tinkerbell, and go back to Neverland to save his kids. In doing so, he must get training from the Lost Boys, who have a new leader, Rufio. They must teach him to fly, fight, and crow in order to save his kids.
This movie has a fun plot and a meaningful message. It teaches lessons about family and friendship, and it for sure will leave you in a better mood then you were in.
Everbody Loves Hook!.......2007-01-04
If you need to buy a gift for a kid from ages 3-93, Hook is a good movie to purchase. It was great seeing Robin Williams and Dustin Hoffman battling it out in NeverLand.

This adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel, scripted by Francis Ford Coppola, puts costume design and art direction above the intricacies of character. It's certainly a handsome try, and perhaps no movie could capture The Great Gatsby in its entirety. Robert Redford is an interesting casting choice as Gatsby, the millionaire isolated in his mansion, still dreaming of the woman he lost. And Sam Waterston is perfect as the narrator, Nick, who brings the dream girl Daisy Buchanan back to Gatsby. No, the problem seems to be that director Jack Clayton fell in love with the flapper dresses and the party scenes and the Jazz Age tunes, ending up with a Classics Illustrated version of a great book rather than a fresh, organic take on the text. While Redford grows more quietly intriguing in the film, Mia Farrow's pallid performance as Daisy leaves you wondering why Gatsby, or anyone else, should care so much about his grand passion. The effective supporting cast includes Bruce Dern as Daisy's husband, and Scott Wilson and Karen Black as the low-rent couple whose destinies cross the sun-drenched protagonists. (That's future star Patsy Kensit as Daisy's little daughter.) The film won two Oscars--not surprisingly, for costumes and musical score. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
Gorgeous movie.......2007-06-28
This movie was lovingly made, and it shows in every gorgeous scene. There are some slow moments, but it's a fine adaptation of one of the greatest novels of all time. Redford was made to play Jay Gatsby, the hopeless romantic, and Mia Farrow is picture-perfect as the fickle Daisy Fay Buchanan.
Mia Farrow sucks.......2007-06-27
While this version of the movie is truer to the novel than the PBS version, some of the Redford/Farrow scenes are hard to watch. My students like the newer version better because the acting is more credible and Mira Sorvino is a "hot" Daisy, but this is closer to the book. We need a third version of this movie with me as director.
THE GREAT GATUBY.......2007-06-12
It reached by even three though only one was ordered.
The order for the cancellation was disregarded.
It resents it very much.
It wants it according to returned goods.
Sam R-M's thoughts on the Gatsby film.......2007-05-29
This interpretation of The Great Gatsby portrayed my view of the setting and of Nick very well. The contrast between Gatsby's house and the Valley of the Ashes enlightened my picture of these places when I read about them. As for the characters, I thought Nick Carraway was performed brilliantly. He was the perfect contrast to self-absorbed high class society and portrayed Nick's sense of quiet akwardness. Tom Buchanan should have been a larger and more intimidating character. It said in the book that his muscles could be seen moving through his clothes and that when he walked into a room he filled the doorway, yet in this movie he appears to be too normally built for a football player. Daisy's character annoyed me, though this may have been done on purpose, and her scenes with Gatsby at his house when they are portrayed "in love" were so cheesy that I could not help but laugh. Overall, however, the movie is a great choice for anyone who is seeking a visual portrayal of The Great Gatsby because it follows the book fairly accurately, though I was not pleased with the absense of Owl Eyes in the film. Samuel Rodgers-Melnick Period 8
Maura Lacey Period 8 Reveiw.......2007-05-29
The movie version of the Great Gatsby was very similar to the book but better. The movie had alot of the same quotes as the book did and allowed you to get a visual representation of what was going on. My favorite character in the movie was definately Jordan Baker. She was most like the Jordan Baker I imagined when reading the book and was cast perfectly for the movie. She was showed how arrogant all of the people in their society were and definately broght the sense of how rich they were to the movie. Nick was cast good too and he proved to be a good actor. The movie is old but yet it seems as if you are watching a fairly new movie. The scenes at Gatsby's parties are very good and really bring out the feelings of the times. Overall, the movie is really worth seeing. It is definately a lot better than the book. If I were to change one thing, I would like to see mrytle be played by a different actress. Other than that though, it was excellent.

I gave this one star only because O is not a given choice. Thank you for pointing out that this DVD is only playable on an HD DVD. I would run right out a buy one if only you had included a synopsis of the movie. An HD DVD would cost a lot more than my ordinary DVD, but not as much as spending money on a DVD of which one knows nothing.

Defective CD's.......2007-07-02
I love this series and finally ordered all 5 seasons. I have spent the last 2 weeks watching them in Quantum Leap Bliss. The show itself is wonderful; however, I had problems with the manufacturing of the DVD's themselves. Each season had at least one disk with problems (i.e. missing bonus features, episodes that won't play in the "play all" mode, but will if you access it from the "episode index," episodes where the show gets hung up, then starts, then gets hung up, then starts, and on and on, and episodes that won't play at all (black screen), etc. I have just done the "exchange" process through Amazon and re-watched all 5 seasons. The 5th season disk 3 had the same problems (episode 18 and 21 won't play properly, they skip and drag, and even kick out to the menu).
I tried to do another exchange for Season 5 through Amazon, and they said "As it seems that the problem with this item "Quantum Leap - The Complete Fifth Season " is more widespread than we originally thought, we are not able to send another replacement. We will investigate and remedy the situation with the item; however, I cannot guarantee when the error may be fixed." Which means, I will not have Season 5.
Best season.......2007-05-08
I was a huge fan of this show when it was on TV. I thought I'd start collecting the seasons and started with season 5. I didn't realize that a lot of my favorite episodes were in this season. The "Trilogy" arc was one of the reasons I started watching the show regularly and the "Evil Leaper" arc really added to the show. I definitely recommend this season!
Quantum Leap The Complete Fifth Season.......2007-04-03
I LOVE Quantum Leap!!! Love Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell, they are terrific. I DON'T like how Donald Belasarius ended the series! I would love to see a Quantum Leap movie and end it the way all Leap fans want it to end! With Dr. Samuel Beckett being able to leap home at will! I now have my entire Quantum Leap collection completed! YEA!!!!
Quantum Leap.......2007-03-25
This has always been one of my most favorite shows, and I now get to enjoy it with my nine year old daughter, who LOVES it! Scott & Dean have the best chemistry! Every show was fun and entertaining. I wish it was still on the air.
Needs extras and scene selections.......2007-03-10
The stories are as good as ever, but they really rushed this one out. It has almost no extras and even lacks scene selections. They could have waited a bit longer and done a better job with this set.

Anybody who has written him off because of his string of stinkers--or anybody who's too young to remember The Goodbye Girl--may be shocked at the accomplishment and nuance of Richard Dreyfuss's performance in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Here, he plays a man possessed; contacted by aliens, he (along with other members of the "chosen") is drawn toward the site of the incipient landing: Devil's Tower, in rural Wyoming. As in many Spielberg films, there are no personalized enemies; the struggle is between those who have been called and a scientific establishment that seeks to protect them by keeping them away from the arriving spacecraft. The ship, and the special effects in general, are every bit as jaw-dropping on the small screen as they were in the theater (well, almost). Released in 1977 as a cerebral alternative to the swashbuckling science fiction epics then in vogue, Close Encounters now seems almost wholesome in its representation of alien contact and interested less in philosophizing about extraterrestrials than it is in examining the nature of the inner "call." Ultimately a motion picture about the obsession of the driven artist or determined visionary, Close Encounters comes complete with the stock Spielberg wives and girlfriends who seek to tether the dreamy, possessed protagonists to the more mundane concerns of the everyday. So a spectacular, seminal motion picture indeed, but one with gender politics that are all too terrestrial. --Miles Bethany
Customer Reviews:
Close Encounters of the Third Kind.......2007-07-03
Top science fiction entry boasts Spielberg's trademark epic sweep, and one of Dreyfuss's shining moments as the afflicted Neary. Director Truffaut is on-hand in a rare acting turn as French scientist Claude Lacombe, and Melinda Dillon excels as bewildered Mom Jillian, whose young son Barry (in a petrifying scene) has already gone up in the aliens' space ship. Don't miss this classic Spielberg spellbinder.
Take out the "H" in "Third" and that's what you've got..........2007-06-07
Who likes this movie? How could you possibly make sense of a film like this? Steven Spielberg really messed up this time around, making a movie about space and yet most of it takes place on earth. Duh...what kind of science fiction movie takes place on Earth in the 1970s? This one, I guess.
If you like to see movies about Richard Dreyfus playing with carbs, then you'll love Close Encounters. And special effects? I don't know why they're considered so revolutionary because they're not half as good as anything I saw in ID4 (that's what I call Independence Day) or MIB II (Men in Black II) or iRobot or even Wild Wild West. Apparently in Steven Spielberg's mind all space aliens are going to terrorize our planet after they arrive in a big Simon (complete with flashing colored lights and the annoying four musical notes)
The best thing about this movie is that it ends (sadly after 6 1/2 hours of people climbing on mountains and staring into the sky). Photosynthesis is more fun to watch than this movie. He's lost his skills since Star Wars.
a movie that changed my life.......2007-05-29
When a film so knocks you off your feet everytime you watch it; when a film that is so sensually created and crafted with such magic as only the mastermind of Spielberg can create; when a film can evoke emotions in its watcher and choke them up, without trying to hide it in front of friends, family and the like; when a film can so catch the inner youth of angst when looking up into the nights sky and dreaming with every creative joint you can muster; when a film's cinematograhy can be so visually stunning and so imaginative, that you are completely in awe; that is when you can honestly sit around on some idle Sunday in May, and share the film again with people and everyone around you says they have goosebumps, and you know there is another reason to be alive. That is the way Close Encounters makes me feel; when I was 8, 18 and 28. Spielberg has created such masterpieces that have shaped our lives. I thank him. I thank him.
A must have for any Spielberg Fan!!!.......2007-05-18
Amazing. A visual masterpiece. If you like movies, you need to own this one. The Two-Disc Collector's Edition should be the only way this DVD is packaged and sold!
Glad I got the Collector's Edition.......2007-05-09
I remember watching this movie when it came out in the theaters and watching in on DVD again was almost as good. The 2-disc collector's edition was well worth it because it has all the behind-the-scenes extras such as the making of, deleted scenes, interviews, etc. The video and sound quality were very good. I expected the 30 year-old special effects to look "dated" but they still seemed surprisingly good. I would definitely recommend this movie if you are a sci-fi fan. As always, Amazon's delivery was speedy and the item arrived it excellent condition.

One of Clint Eastwood's two most important filmmaking mentors was Don Siegel (the other was Sergio Leone), who directed Eastwood in Dirty Harry, Coogan's Bluff, Two Mules for Sister Sara, and this enigmatic, 1979 drama based on a true story about an escape from the island prison of Alcatraz. Eastwood plays a new convict who enters into a kind of mind game with the chilly warden (Patrick McGoohan) and organizes a break leading into the treacherous waters off San Francisco. As jailbird movies go, this isn't just a grotty, unpleasant experience but a character-driven work with some haunting twists. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Escape from Alcatraz.......2007-07-03
Based on a true story about the men whose 1962 escape from the San Francisco maximum-security penitentiary ushered in its demise, this thrilling prison-break tale by "Dirty Harry" director Siegel has all the elements of a great action film. And Eastwood, laconic as ever, is captivating as the brains behind the plan. His scenes with McGoohan, though brief, are thick with psychological tension. Though "Alcatraz" takes its time building to the climactic bust-out attempt by Morris's team, Siegel never lets your nerves rest.
Eastwood gives his best screen acting to date..........2006-12-28
In the 29 years of Alcatraz's existence, and despite the strict measures, 39 captives tried to escape from America's premier maximum-security prison during its existence... Thirty six of whom failed... This script is about the other three, of whom nothing is known... They may have drowned in San Francisco Bay, or they may have got away...
Morris (Clint Eastwood) was a loner, a rebel against society, the perfect hero that Siegel loves... Lee Marvin in 'The Killers', Steve McQueen in 'Hell is for Heroes', and Richard Widmark in 'Madigan' were all similar types in films which he had directed..
In 'Escape From Alcatraz,' Eastwood gives his best screen acting to date... It is a charismatic performance that is so idiosyncratic, persuasive, and powerful... Eastwood, gave Morris the rough, intelligent aspect that is immediately palpable...
The first few minutes of the film consist of Morris being brought by boat to Alcatraz, inspected by a doctor and thrown into a cell... Throughout this, Eastwood does not speak... But already the audience feels it... They know the character... He has been through this before... He tries to control his mind... He builds a barrier between himself and his surroundings... He holds back his fear but he's not so foolish as to appear brave... Behind his impassivity, his mind is calculating... He is studying everyone... Everyone knows, prison guards and fellow prisoners alike, that this is not a man to be intimidated with easily...
But Siegel wasn't making a film about penal cruelty or miscarriage of justice or anything like that... He was presenting a meditative study of the inflexibility of human spirit, with a star strong enough in himself to join one sequence to the next... Both Siegel and Eastwood are known for violence, but there's relatively little of it this time...
This is not to say that Siegel has no interest in character... Stereotype characters, such as Doc and Litmus, make the film more entertaining... A further example is the inevitable homosexual Wolf (Bruce M. Fisher), who points out that Morris is a potential victim but realizes he has met his match when he approaches him in the showers one morning and gets three unexpected blows in the groin and a bar of soap in the mouth for his harassment... Another familiar type of character is English (Paul Benjamin), the leader of the Black mafia, who sits in the yard far away from the white inmates... English proves to be a nice guy..
But the biggest stereotype of them all is the cold warden, although Patrick McGoohan tries as hard as he can to provide Morris with some individual personality... Apart from the flower-crushing and constant attention to his nails, he is permitted by the scriptwriter merely to recite phrases that might have come from the prison handbook: 'No one has ever escaped from Alcatraz alive. Alcatraz was built to keep all the rotten eggs in one basket. I was specially chosen to make sure the stink from that basket doesn't escape.'
But two elements in the film are absolutely real: one is the central character, which will be considered in a moment, and the other is 'The Rock' itself...
Siegel's overwhelming achievement is to send the audience to infamous prison for two hours... The claustrophobia, the implicit suppression of any joy, the barbarity of being caged in isolation cells, all these suffocating atrocities come across with such reality that one experiences a total sense of relief when the camera moves into the recreation yard for the clear bright light of every early morning... Siegel's technique in this respect is unique...
Siegel's film style seems almost a cinematic interpretation of Eastwood screen persona: lean, clean, and harsh... Here is one example: When the incorrigible psychopath is out to finish Eastwood, his one chance is in the exercise yard... When he enters the yard, he is in need for a weapon... He has none! He slowly advances into the yard toward his victim... The camera goes down to the man's right hand as he walks... After a moment, another man puts a knife in that hand... The camera stays on the hand as he keeps moving... After another moment, another hand reaches in and grabs the con's arm.... The whole brief sequence is loaded with surprise and suspense... It is in two words: pure cinema...
Siegel's movie follows the known facts of the escape constantly, permitting itself only one act of poetic license at the very end... Throughout the film, Siegel uses a yellow chrysanthemum as a symbol of 'heart', to indicate that although the brutal system may have removed everything from the inmates save the questionable privilege of remaining alive, in some men at least their spirit survives...
'Doc', an elderly inmate who has spent twenty years there but who is permitted to paint and cultivate chrysanthemums, introduces the concept...

Patch Adams raises two schools of thought: There are those who are inspired by the true story of a troubled man who finds happiness in helping others--a man set on changing the world and who may well accomplish the task. And then there are those who feel manipulated by this feel-good story, who want to smack the young medical student every time he begins his silly antics.
Staving off suicidal thoughts, Hunter Adams commits himself into a psychiatric ward, where he not only garners the nickname "Patch," but learns the joy in helping others. To this end, he decides to go to medical school, where he clashes with the staid conventions of the establishment as he attempts to inject humor and humanity into his treatment of the patients ("We need to start treating the patient as well as the disease," he declares throughout the film). Robin Williams, in the title role, is as charming as ever, although someone should tell him to broaden his range--the ever-cheerful do-gooder à la Good Will Hunting and Dead Poets Society is getting a little old. His sidekick Truman (Daniel London) steals the show with his gawky allure and eyebrows that threaten to overtake his lean face--he seems more real, which is odd considering that Patch Adams does exist and this film is based on his life. Monica Potter is the coolly reluctant love interest, and she makes the most of her one-dimensional part. While moments of true heartfelt emotion do come through, the major flaw of this film is that the good guys are just so gosh-darn good and the bad ones are just big meanies with no character development. Patch Adams, though, does provide the tears, the giggles, and the kooky folks who will keep you smiling at the end. --Jenny Brown

Robin Williams Shows He can Act! .......2007-06-04
The movie has a great story and message - then add to that the all-around acting talent of Robin Williams and you have got a great telling of true story. It is entertaining and inspiring!
I serve on a a board for a non-profit organization that is trying to help today's veterans with PTSD - and Patch Adams is also on that advisory board with me. He continues to care and continues to give service. The man is for real.
Patch Adams Review.......2007-03-23
Robin Williams is amazing in this role. We just don't realize his talent as an actor. I just loved the movie.

Super movie. Great inspirational to all health care providers. Highly recommended!
A Must See Movie.......2007-02-16
Robin Williams is his zany, crazy self in the 1998 movie Patch Adams. The movie is based on the life of Hunter "Patch" Adams and the book Gesundheit. Patch Adams played by Robert Williams is a medical student at Virginia Medical University where he takes an unconventional approach to medicine. Patch Adams shows us that humor is really the best medicine. Robin Williams and co stars Daniel London, and Monica Potter all give wonderful performances in Patch Adams. This is absolutely a must see Movie for both young and old! For those curious to know the poem that Patch recites to Corinne (Played by Monica Potter) throughout the movie is entitled "I Do Not Love You" and was written by Pablo Neruda a Chilean poet, and diplomat, who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1971.
not my kind of movie, but..........2007-01-28
This film was one of those, that when it starts you think "Oh no, here we go, it's a serious film, and I thought, with Robin Williams in it, it was going to be light-hearted". Well, that's exactly what it is! Robin portrays Patch Adams as a caring and sensitive person, who, quite by accident, finds his purpose in life, and quite literally, nothing will stand in his way.
Although there is a romance, it is handled very delicately, and as a result does not become to involved with the whole point of the story, which is to improve the treatment of sick people. This is definitely a "feel good" film as when it is over, you find yourself smiling and wishing you knew someone with the tenacity to enjoy life as much as Patch Adams, obviously does.
I recommend this as a good way to find out what Robin Williams is capable of, even if you're not a fan (just rent it and decide for yourself)
