Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
Blake Edwards (Victor/Victoria) wrote and directed this sharp if somewhat underachieving satire about sexual politics, in which an unrepentant playboy (Perry King), with a long trail of broken hearts behind him, dies and comes back as a woman (Ellen Barkin). Barkin is terrific as a babe with the mind and soul of a stud, and her struggles to reconcile her male impulses with the realities of her new body are the best material in the film. Jimmy Smits is fine as her best friend (back when she was a he, however), and JoBeth Williams is memorable as one of the deceased fellow's castoffs--she ironically becomes an ally of his incarnation as a woman. This isn't Edwards at his greatest, but it's a highly watchable minor entry in his canon. --Tom Keogh

If you were a kid in the early 1960s, then you saw The Parent Trap with Hayley Mills--it's as simple as that. Now Disney has pulled the beloved comedy--about a pair of twins who meet for the first time at summer camp and vow to reunite their long-divorced parents--out of the mothballs and remade it with a decidedly '90s feel. This time, the twins act is performed by newcomer Lindsay Lohan, who plays both Hallie and Annie, who each live with one of their parents (Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson). Adversaries when they first meet at camp, Hallie and Annie become, well, sisters when they figure out that they are siblings. The comedy springs from their efforts to sabotage Dad's impending marriage to the gold-digging Elaine Hendrix, while reintroducing Dad to Mom. Quaid has a nice, loosey-goosey way with slapstick, as does Richardson, who plays a very funny drunk scene. --Marshall Fine

Description

What makes the Special Edition of THE PARENT TRAP so cool isn't just that you get to enjoy Lindsay Lohan's amazing theatrical debut, but that's it's filled with bonus materials you've never seen before. Hallie Parker, a hip Californian, and Annie James, a proper London miss (both played by Lohan) are identical twins who don't even know each other exists -- until they accidentally meet at summer camp. Now they're up to their freckles in schemes and dreams to switch places, get their parents (Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson) back together, and have the family they've always wished for!

4 out of 5 stars Best of the Remakes.......2007-07-02

Lindsay Lohan made her first appearance in this latest remake of the Disney classic based on the German children's book. Two girls meet at summer camp. Other than their styles, they look exactly the same. When their hatred of each other forces them to be isolated together they learn the truth. They are sisters. Their parents split up and each took one of the twins and never mentioned the other. Wanting to see their other parent, the girls switch places. When the parents find out about the switch they will have to get together to make an exchange of siblings.

But there is a snag. The father is about to get remarried. Now everything has to be sped up if there is any hope of getting the parents back together again. Revelations and madcap hijinks make up the rest of the film as the twins do everything in their power to stop the wedding and reunite their parents.

Much better than the Olsen Twin remake. While much of the story is very close to the original, it has been properly updated. The parents were a shipboard romance that failed. Newer technology has Lohan beside herself even more than Hayley Mills was. The rest of the cast is excellent and Quaid (the father) really shows he is a better actor than he is usually given credit for. Even the extras are entertaining. A fun documentary about making Lindsay twins and an extra scene involving the Queen of England. Fun for the whole family. Check it out.

4 out of 5 stars Family Fun.......2007-06-08

As with the original version of this movie with Hayley Mills, this is a nice movie despite the premise being so horribly ridiculous. What nice divorcing parents would separate their twins, each take custody of one and never mention or attempt to see the other for 12 years? I did thoroughly enjoy Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson in their roles. There were several differences between this movie and the 1961 version, actually enough to make this enjoyable. I didn't feel like I was watching different actors play the parts and recite the lines of the same characters from that movie.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-05-21

Great funny movie, perfect for the family. Everyone will like it!! get the soundtrack too music is great. Awesome movie.

3 out of 5 stars Cutesy.......2007-04-18

I vaguely remember the 1961 version of The Parent Trap. I say vaguely because that version of the movie was apparently as equally compelling as the 1998 version...which isn't that compelling. But...my kids enjoyed it thoroughly.

The movie takes place way before Lindsay Lohan's pics could be spotted...or should I say pics of Lindsay's privates could be spotted...all over the Internet. Lindsay plays (both) twins separated at birth by their divorcing parents. When the twins meet up by chance 10 or so years later they come up with a diabolical plan to reunite their parents.

Anyone not familiar enough with the story has been under a rock...perhaps since 1961. Anyone that missed the movie deliberately because it sounds too cutesy and far-fetched has done himself or herself a favor. This is a movie for kids. Adults will be more entertained watching their kids interpret the themes in the movie.

So if you're over the age of 14 and you've somehow found yourself contemplating The Parent Trap as the next movie that you just have to see among all of the other available titles...I would say that life under that rock has taken its toll on you in a most severe way.

If you're looking for a decent movie for your age 6 - 14 year old(s)...this could be the one if your kids can handle a couple of smooches (no...none by Lindsay...Dennis Quaid gets a few kisses from Elaine Hendrix and Natasha Richardson). Oh, and I would be remiss not to warn, I'm not sure that the Speedo that Simon Kunz appears in for a brief scene is suitable for viewing by anyone!

3 out of 5 stars A Double Life.......2007-05-01

In David Lynch's 1997 cult film, Jazz musician Fred Madison (Bill Pullman) lives in a swank Los Angeles house with his wife Renee (Patricia Arquette, in a prankishly awful brown Betty Page wig), whom he suspects of adultery; they receive mysterious videotapes that seem to have been taken in their house while they both sleep. At a Hollywood party, Fred encounters a mysterious stranger (Robert Blake, in the film's most memorable bit), a nightmarish joker character without eyebrows who uncannily seems to be able to be two places at once. Before he knows it, Fred is under arrest for the gruesome murder and dismemberment of Renee; in prison, he seems to undergo a metamorphosis and become a whole new character, Pete Dayton, a handsome younger mechanic (Balthazar Getty). Dayton becomes involved with Alice, the girlfriend (again played by Arquette, now a blonde) of his best customer, a gangsterish figure named Mr. Eddy (Robert Loggia); Alice tries to escape with Pete from Mr. Eddy's clutches, and then things get really wild.

In retrospect, LOST HIGHWAY film seems now mostly to pave the way for his superb 2001 MULHOLLAND DR., covering many of the same obsessions (the dark dreamy tone, the split narratives, a divided main character, the Los Angeles wasteland) but without the later film's very welcome moments of comic relief or its charismatic and complex central performance by Naomi Watts (in her famous star-making performance). Although Bill Pullman is quite fine at conveying torment, he is less adept at suggesting inner depths or self-division. And its quite puzzling to see why Lynch cast Arquette for any reason (other than for her physical similarity as Alice to Jayne Mansfield). Both Getty and Robert Blake are much more memorable, but they're in smaller roles and can't hold the films together by themselves. The film has some superbly unsettling visual moments (the empty vortexes of Pullman's hallways, a dream vision repeated twice of a desert cabin exploding in flames in reverse), and the film creepily evokes some of the most infamous deaths in Hollywood history, such as the murder of the Black Dahlia (suggested by the bisection of Renee and her dark 40s wig) and the car accident that killed Jayne Mansfield (evoked by the death of the character of Sammy, and by Arquette's appearance as Alice). Even so, MULHOLLAND DR. shows how much stronger a film Lynch might have made, with all the same narrative enigmas but a much stronger emotional connection.

Purchase a region free DVD player or find an unlock code for your player (google "DVD unlock code") and purchase the Lost Highway 2 disc special edition from Amazon.co.uk. 1 out of 5 stars A rare miss for Lynch........2007-04-17

I love David Lynch. To be honest, he could properly poop in a DVD case and I'd give it 4 stars. This movie, however, is terrible. There's no tangent plot, no likeable characters, no nothing. The first viewing of this ended with me and a friend concluding, "I'd like to watch the rest of the movie, but I don't care." The 2nd viewing felt like a marathon in self-control and patience. This is an awful movie.

3 out of 5 stars Good film, bad dvd.......2007-03-21

This movie is excellent if you are into david lynch or any other movies that make you think. Instead of the director telling you exactly what's happening, he has you experience it from the main characters point of view. The reason i gave this movie 3 stars was only because of the quality of this dvd. I would have given it a 1 star if it wasn't for the actual movie. Get the 2 disc version from amazon uk. It's a million times better. That one gets 5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars I Guess The Joke's On Us........2007-03-10

This flick was weird, and rather mind-numbingly so, even for a David Lynch film! It took me three watchings, half a bottle of tylenol (for the headaches it gave me) and reading about three or four interviews online with Lynch himself wherein he offered the only explanation that he could (something about a "psychogenic fugue"...?!?!) over this film and it's bizarre circuitous plot for me to even begin to figure out just what the heck is going on throughout half of it! Even now, I'm still not enitirely sure that I'm totally getting this or any of Lynch's films for that matter. And in my opinion therein lies the whole point/problem with Lynch's films. Meaning simply that maybe all of us spend far too much time trying to decipher what his movie's are all about, and that ultimately they may very well be nothing more than big elaborate jokes that he is playing on all of us in that no one but him will ever actually "figure out" his movie's and their supposed "meanings"...if they even have any at all! Though with that said I still find myself somewhat of a fan of the man's films as they are brilliant in terms of the production values (i.e. unique and meticulous set designs, the awesome, weirdo soundtracks, the costuming, the lighting etc.). I just decided some time ago to quit spending so much time thinking about his film's as it's pretty much futile in my book, and instead I just enjoy them for the wild, trippy mindf***s that they obviously are. And 1997's "Lost Highway" is one of Lynch's best examples of this. I highly recommened it to most people, however, those who aren't familiar with the man's film's before this one might want to try the more commercial and less psychologically mind-bending films from earlier in his career entitled "Blue Velvet" and "The Elephant Man". Oh, and I should add that the soundtrack may very well be one of the best ever created! Kudos to Trent Reznor and Lynch regular Angelo Badalementi for that one.

Barbie's excellent musical debut features first-rate voices and songs, and a captivating story about love, responsibility, and freedom. Based on Mark Twain's The Prince and the Pauper, the 85-minute computer-animated adventure is about two almost identical girls who, though born into very different circumstances, are amazingly alike. A chance meeting between the young women becomes significant when Princess Annaliese is later kidnapped and (pauper) Erika suddenly becomes a crucial component in the search for the princess and her captor. The princess's confinement and Erika's glimpse into the life of a princess leads both girls toward a new compassion for the other and a serious contemplation of the conflict between one's sense of duty and the desire to be free. Adding to the general confusion is the princess's intended, the handsome King Dominick; her devoted tutor, Julian; and the Queen's evil advisor, Preminger. (Ages 3 to 9) --Tami Horiuchi

My niece is into princess and everything about princess at age 5. I stopped counting how many times she has seen this video. Simply lovely and she knows all the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Great Barbie Movie For Kids Of All Ages!.......2007-04-02

This movie is very well done in animation and in story. Martin Short does a voice-over for one of the characters. It is very endearing as it gets the point across that your heart and what kind of person you are is more important than your status, be it rich or poor. It has a happy ending which is always nice!

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-03-28

I think all the Barbie movies are wonderful. They all have good plots, graphics, and music. The use appropriate humor for kids. They enforce good values--like good things happen when you are courageous. And the best part: no whiny Disney princess that disobeys her father and puts the kingdom in peril to "choose her own path", "follow her heart" etc.

5 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD MOVIE.......2007-03-09

ALL GIRLS WILL LOVE THIS MOVIE AND THEY LIKE TO SING WITH IT AND ACT OUT WITH THE MOVIE ALSO. SO CUTE

5 out of 5 stars Great movie for all.......2007-02-24

I first rented this movie and my daughter insisted on watching it over and over again, so we bought it for her birthday. She couldn't have been happier. The movie has a great story and wonderful songs to go along with it. It has the kids dancing and singing everytime it is on. I would recommend this movie to anyone with kids.

This first theatrical outing for the ubiquitous Olsen twins is their take on The Parent Trap meets The Prince and the Pauper. One plays a foster child under the care of a single social worker (Kirstie Alley) whose marital status prevents her from adopting her favorite charge. The other is the neglected daughter of a "bazillionaire" (Steve Guttenberg), who's about to marry a gold-digging socialite (played nastily by Jane Sibbett, Ross's first ex-wife on TV's Friends). The foster kid comes to a charity camp abutting the rich girl's summer estate and--presto--the identical strangers meet, hatch a plan to solve both their dilemmas, and switch identities. Directed by Andy Tennant (Ever After), this PG-rated film features some decent G-rated chemistry between Alley and Guttenberg and surprisingly uncloying performances by Mary-Kate and Ashley. The rating is for mild language. (Ages 5 and up) --Kimberly Heinrichs

This movie is a must see with your children! Kirsty Ally and Steve Guttenberg have great chemistry, along with the Olson twins. It is parent trap with a twist. We just love it!

5 out of 5 stars "It Takes Two" (actually 4).......2007-01-19

If you love a great comedy that you can really laugh with, you will definitely enjoy this movie. Kirstie Alley, Steve Guttenberg and of course the "Olsen twins" make a great combination for this funny and heart warming movie.

2 out of 5 stars Mary-Kate & Ashley remake Parent Trap [2.5 stars].......2006-07-25

If you've seen Parent Trap (either verion), you've see It Takes Two. It is incredibly predictable. Even so, the girls are cute and the story line has plenty of fun and mischief built into it. Pre-teen girls will especially like this movie. There are some elements for adults - at least parents of children - to enjoy.

One small note of caution: there's a subtle but questionable message in this movie. The wicked soon-to-be stepmother of one of the girls is driven away, giving the story its fairytale ending. As that plays out, the message is sent that its good to humiliate and embarrass those that have wronged us . Of course, the revenge exacted on the villainess is all in fun and somewhat deserved; nevertheless, the revenge message is fairly clear. It presents a great opportunity for parents to discuss with their kids the "Golden Rule."

4 out of 5 stars Great family movie!.......2006-07-06

I remember this movie from when i was younger. I really loved the olsen twins so i am purchasing all their movies to re-live my chilhood! They are such funand great to watch as a family! And if u don't have kids they're great to watch by yourself...they're corny but great movies!!!

--Tom Keogh

4 out of 5 stars switch.......2007-05-15

This is a very funny movie and I have not been able to find this in local stores or rental stores. Thanks to Amazon my search was over.

4 out of 5 stars Not for the kids.......2007-05-13

Very well done movie on if you were a man that was murdered by a female (among many) you did wrong one too many times, and the wisdom above decided to send you back and as a female, if you could find one female that liked you which would save you from going below (hell).....and what a hoot watching this man in a womans body, walk in heels, handle men, and calling his former dates trying to find that one female that had something nice to say about him. Lots of foul language, but a good comedy. The ending will surprise you. Good movie.

5 out of 5 stars Ellen is fantastic.......2007-03-11

One of the funniest movies ever!! Ellen Barkin is fantastic in her role. Would love to know what type of training she had prior to filming.

4 out of 5 stars 4-Star comedy.......2006-11-10

This is an original, delightful comedy that everyone would enjoy.
Ellen Barkin at her best.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Laugh.......2006-11-04

I saw this movie some years ago and always wanted a copy to watch when I needed a good laugh. Originally from the New York Metropolitan area, I enjoy the brazenness of Miss Barkin and the laundered depiction of the lesbian scene enjoyed by the wealthier New York women however close to the truth it may or may not be. Give your brain a rest, enjoy the beautiful women, and have a fun evening watching this.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie!.......2007-06-02

This movie came to me in perfect condition and I received it super fast. This is a great suspense movie and it is really cool. Thank you for such great service!

4 out of 5 stars A sleeper that sticks with you.......2007-05-10

Time has shown this 80s thriller to be a more durable, intriguing film than first it may have seemed. Debra Winger is at her most gorgeous, and the chemistry between her character and Theresa Russell's 'black widow' is palpable. I loved the colourful locations and the sense of glowing health of the cast. People who haven't seen it before will notice the 80s-style male chauvinism, but it doesn't detract from the movie. Great to see the portrayal of several murders without one violent scene or one spurt of blood. A genuinely adult movie.

4 out of 5 stars Sexy, stylish thriller.......2007-04-25

BLACK WIDOW is a sexy and stylish thriller, mainly notable for the always-reliable Debra Winger playing a gutsy female investigator.

When several rich older men all die in sudden, bizarre circumstances, government investigator Alexandra Bates (Debra Winger) becomes convinced a common link will lead to one individual. Alex's theory later leads her across the path of Theresa (Catherine Russell), a woman with untold fortunes and several husbands. Determined that she is the 'Black Widow', Alex befriends her in Hawaii, and later becomes part of a sordid love triangle with the next intended victim of Catherine's plot. BLACK WIDOW is filled with enough chills and thrills to hook any audience.

Debra Winger, in one of the rare times she doesn't play the dying tragedienne, delivers an excellent performance as Alex, a woman trying to exist within the male-dominated world of government intelligence. She is the only one who truly holds this movie together. Catherine Russell brings a chilling, glacial quality to the role of Theresa/Rennie, the black widow of the title. The cast also features Diane Ladd, Sami Frey, Nicol Williamson, Dennis Hopper, James Hong, and Mary Woronov.

5 out of 5 stars Black Widow DVD.......2007-01-03

This is an almost classic movie. However, its not for everyone. This one was used as a gift.

5 out of 5 stars A Two Person Noir.......2005-06-26

You can just about forget everyone else in this film other than Debra Winger and Theresa Russell. This sexy film is basically a two person film noir shot in bright colors, some of it in Hawaii. It is filled with excitement and seduction. Both the leads are wonderful to watch, their chemistry magnificent in this Bob Rafelson (Man Trouble, Five Easy Pieces) film.

Debra Winger is Alex Barnes, bogged down in a government desk job dealing with statistics. But when she sees a pattern of deaths that lead to Theresa Russell, a dangerously beautiful woman with ice in her veins, she becomes obsessed with catching a killer. Theresa Russell, who has used more names than Jason Bourne, is just as smart as she is sexy, and almost the entire film is one long seduction scene as Russell spins her web around Alex.

It seems a lot of rich men have suddenly died on Russell and Alex knows why. She is what is called a Black Widow, a woman who mates and then kills. No one has found any evidence to prove it, however, and Alex's attempt to catch her at it becomes murky as a seduction begins to take place.

The locations and the stars are beautiful and as Winger and Russell circle each other in this game with deadly stakes you can't take your eyes off them. Winger's Alex is smart and determined, but vulnerable, and Russell gives a flawless and sexy performance as a smart and icy beauty with a heart full of venom.

The electricity between the two characters jumps off the screen. The pool scene where they first meet gives us an indication of what is to come as Alex attempts to get close to Russell, with some unexpected twists. The formost of these is a scene when Alex gives Russell a Black Widow pendant, a spider who mates and kills its lover. Russell's response plays with the fragile but determined Alex as she begins to doubt herself.

You don't want to miss this one. It's gorgeous to look at and has two riveting performances from Winger and Russell. You can't find a better one than this.

The Passenger is one of those movies that is all about the vision of the director, in this case, screen legend Michelangelo Antonioni. Starring none other than Jack Nicholson, and featuring a plot billed as an international romantic thriller, The Passenger defies expectations by turning the genre on its head, making the characters and the story secondary to theme and tone. London-based Journalist David Locke (Nicholson) is working in North Africa when a fellow traveler by the name of David Robertson, who looks remarkably like him, happens to die suddenly. Burned out and depleted, Locke decides to assume the dead man's identity, drops everything, and starts again as a new man with a new life. With no idea of who Robertson was or what he did for a living, Locke uses Robertson's datebook as a guide as he travels through Europe and Africa, takes meetings with people he finds out are gun runners, and ends up falling for a beautiful young woman (Maria Schneider). As Robertson, David Locke thinks he has found an exhilirating new freedom, but the fact is he's in over his head: there are people looking for him and his life could be in danger.

The movie is a thriller in structure only. While designed for suspense, it's just a premise for Antonioni to explore on themes of identity, humankind's seemingly futile relationship to the world around us, and isolation. For Antonioni, the action is the means by which the image unfolds, and not the other way around. The actors and the plot are set pieces, simply smaller means to a larger end, and the image and atmosphere supersede all else. A slow pace, long, lingering shots, a focus on emptiness, and a detached, almost brutally objective point of view are the trademarks on full display here. Especially notable is the stunning seven-minute long shot in the final scene, one of the most famous in cinema history, which Nicholson, in his commentary, tags as an "Antonioni joke." It caps a crowning achievement by one of the big screen's most visionary directors.

On the DVD:
The commentaries are most definitely welcome guides, and those looking for a way into the movie and into Antonioni's head will really enjoy them. Jack Nicholson provides one commentary track where he generously shares his memories of the shoot, his thoughts on the movie thirty years on, and lets out the secret of how they managed to get the camera through the bars on the window for that seven-minute shot in the last scene. On the second commentary track, journalist Aurora Irvine and screenwriter Mark Peploe offer more of a wide-angle lens view of the movie and its place in history. Both are insightful narratives—Nicholson's is particularly enjoyable--and make excellent additions to the DVD. --Daniel Vancini

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Transient Identity...........2007-04-16

Michaelangelo Antonioni takes as a starting point a plot that could have easily made a standard or even quite good thriller, and quietly dismantles nearly all of its thriller tropes to create a strange and moody meditation on the fragile veneer of identity, and the danger both psychic and real from stepping off from the known and familiar into the unknown and mysterious.

A free-lance TV journalist forlornly trying to get some inside film on a North African rebel group abruptly switches identities with a look-alike stranger, dead of a heart attack, in the same run-down provincial hotel where both are staying. The remoteness of the locale, their close resemblance, and the unsophisticated institutions of this dismal country allow the journalist's impulsive caprice to succeed, and he begins an examination of both the life he's left behind and a search to answer the riddles of the identity he has stolen.

All of this is told in unconventional fashion, 70's style, with wide vistas, deliberately leisurely pace, enigmatic dialogue or no dialogue at all, with a great attention to the visual space the characters inhabit and a mimimum of explanation as to what these characters are feeling. There is some very clever work with time shifts done within continuing single shots, and of course, in the celebrated finale that elapses without dialogue and brings the film full circle in a single, justly famous, continuous shot.

This film will try the patience of many a 21st.Century viewer. Antonioni was all about breaking conventional screen story-telling devices, no less so than here, although this is actually one of his more accessible works. I have found some of his other films impenetrable.

Jack Nicholson's commentary is very welcome, less in recalling the shoot, however interesting, but more in his pointed comments as to how and where Antonioni breaks with traditional narrative. An intriguing look at the zeitgeist of the 70's from Antonioni's very European perspective.

1 out of 5 stars Oh Dear.......2007-01-11

I bought the DVD as a Xmas present for my son - hence the delay between purchase and discovery. Unfortunately the DVD sent was not of the correct configuration for UK DVD players - so he hasn't yet seen it. Cannot comment on the product otherwise. What should I do?

2 out of 5 stars intense but annoying.......2007-01-03

The acting is decent & intense, but the pace of the story is annoying. And the motivation of the female lead is very questionable.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning young Jack Nicholson.......2007-01-03

Yep an early iconographic movie with Jack at his best - yet different!

4 out of 5 stars an unhappy marriage.......2006-12-17

This might have been another great Antonioni-movie but for the presence of Jack Nicholson. It's hard to say, though, if Nicholson doesn't fit into Antonioni's great Italian concept, or if Antonioni doesn't serve Nicholson's great American talents well.

Whatever view you prefer, it's clear the two of them make an unhappy marriage. 'The Passenger' is another great, slow-paced Antonioni-movie requiring a somewhat pensive & reflective lead. So at times Jack Nicholson is forced to put the brakes on his quicksilvery, active trademark-way of playing.

Apart from these tensions 'The Passenger' is great. Its plot about changed indentities keeps you interested throughout, while its picturing shows the usual Antonioni-excellence: always emphasizing on architecture, this time on the world-famous Gaudi-buildings in Barcelona.

The last characteristic worth mentioning is 'The Passenger's very seventies-setting. In a career spanning seven decades, Michelangelo Antonioni always touched the right nerve of his times.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Twain and the Movies Have Met.......2007-05-17

Mark Twain's witty and delightful blending of historical fact forms the basis for this rousing "trading places" adventure in medieval London.

This is a film where you can turn off the picture and just listen to Erich Wolgang Korngold's wall-to-wall score, where each scene has its own theme, as do the leading characters. Korngold envisioned his film scores as operas without words, where he pitched his music to that of the actor's voices, the melody varying in tone and tempo to reflect their feelings. The climatic Coronation sequence, featuring St. Luke's Choristers, from Long Beach, CA, is spectacular. This was one of the composer's favorite scores, which he later reworked into Violin Concerto in D. Op. 35. (The Itzhak Perlman Edition, EMI records Ltd 2003).

If this weren't enough, the period settings, costumes and mise-en-scene are incredibly detailed and richly textured. The once-in-a-lifetime cast, headed by Errol Flynn, the remarkable Mauch twins, Claude Rains and a host of familiar Warners character actors, is impeccable.

Even Shawn, Prince Edward's giant Irish wolfhound, is a scene-stealer.

William Keighley's direction is first-rate, as is Sol Polito's black and white cinematography, where each set-up enhances the drama of the moment. The term Black and White is clearly a misnomer... never more apparent than in viewing this film, with its shimmering silver halide crystals, which have never been more beautifully presented on the screen. The transfer to DVD is stunning and the sound track comes through loud and clear on my system.

Hardly just a kids' film, this is one for the ages with its dark themes of poverty, child abuse, political skulduggery and talk of beheadings. Rest assured that all's well that ends well, with Errol Flynn coming to the rescue in the nick of time!

In the words of the N. Y. Times in its original review: "The novel and the screen have been bridged so gracefully that we can not resist in saying that the Twain and the movies have met."

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't if it was an illusion..........2007-05-06

Errol Flynn was the ultimate swashbuckler, the most dashing hero that ever was, is, or will be. There are many imitations, but there has never been any who could truly match him, and I doubt will ever bee any who can even truly compare.

He made all the all the ladies dream and all the men wish they could be him (some admitted it, some did not, but they all did). However, that was not all he could do. There could be many better actors, but very few could make us dream as he did and does.

A lot has been said about Flynn, some good some bad, but his image remains beyond the reach of comments and criticism. He was, and is, the stuff of which myths and legends are made, on and off the screen. And he still unsurpassed.

As it was so eloquently put in the film "My Favourite Year", it doesn't matter if it was an illusion. It worked. He could not have convinced us the way he did unless somewhere inside he had that courage. He was that silly goddamned hero! Nobody is that good of an actor.
Besides, we cannot use him 'life-size'. We all need Errol Flynns as big as we can get them!

Today, we put on airs and claim to be a lot more sophisticated an audience than we were at the time when his movies were made.
But, the truth is that when see him on the screen today, he still inspires in us the same feelings, from awe to envy, and everything in between. Of course, some of us would admit it, some of us wouldn't, but we all feel it
His movies still tell us what true heroes and adventures are all about- and if they are not, they should be.

I would more than recommend "The Prince and the Pauper", and any or Errol Flynn's movies, to anyone who still dares to believe in dashing heroes and is not ashamed to admit it.

5 out of 5 stars The Prince and the Pauper.......2006-11-10

Errol Flynn is at his best in this movie. It is a testament to his acting ability in that he can play so many different roles.

5 out of 5 stars Adventure.......2006-08-20

This movie takes you on a grand, childhood, adventure. You are right along in this wonderful story; back in the days of horses, swords, nobles, peasants, thieves, castles, kings, and adventurous children. The 2001 version is also very good. I enjoyed them both.

The exciting adventures of a young boy in England in the 1700's. Can't say more without giving away the plot. Written by Mark Twain, who wrote Tom Sawyer; just as good.

5 out of 5 stars More in common with "The Man in the Iron Mask".......2006-02-08

This is a superb movie but it has little in common with the book by the same name. It more closely resembles Alexandre Dumas "The Man in the Iron Mask" than Mark Twain's "The Prince and the Pauper". Errol Flynn and the Mauch twins are both great in this movie. Plenty of action for Flynn to show off his skills, and wonderful drama and comedy make it a family favorite. When a young poor street urchin swaps places with a prince a kingdom is almost lost. The Mauch twins do an excellent job of carrying both roles. They do an excellent job portraying a brat and a considerate boy. As good as Freddie Bartholomew in "Captains Courageous".

Originally an ABC telefilm, Switching Goals comes to video. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen play super-identical twins who are actually total opposites. OK, it's not the freshest concept in the universe, but the teen divas (who also exec produce--as they did in their Passport to Paris) are an undeniable favorite with little girls all-over. Here, they're Sam, the athletic one, and Emma, the fashion-conscious one. Their indulgent dad (Eric Lutes) coaches a soccer team and their workaholic mother (Kathryn Greenwood) is a psychologist. Look for a switch, the truth to be revealed, and all to end well. This video may prove to be just the perfect gift for any young girl between 4 and 10. Not only will they get to gaze up on the familiar, comforting countenances of the Olsens, but given how many young 'uns play soccer, there's even more to relate to. --N.F. Mendoza

5 out of 5 stars My Kids Love It!!.......2007-02-08

My girls are not TV watchers at all, but they enjoy these movies; they think they are fun to watch.

There is nothing wrong with watching them once in awhile. Generally they teach kids that sticking together as sisters or family members is the way to go.

1 out of 5 stars No more goals for them.......2005-11-22

Hello, my name is Alexandra Marie Anne Bunitorisua and i am reviewing this movie. I think that this movie is very very very wrong. What are movies trying to teach children these days?!? That it is fine to graduate schools? Girls should stay home and help their mothers until they are four teen, and then they get married and have children at fifteen. These dolls are very bad for young girls because they make it seem like girls can particapate in sports, which they cannot. That is my opinion and i hope you follow by it. its true.
SOCCER IS FOR BOYS!!!!!!!!! CLEANING HOUSES ARE FOR GIRLS!!!!!!!

2 out of 5 stars bad acting.......2005-03-21

This movie had bad acting. The dad is dramactic and corney. The mom is just corney, and all of the soccer coaches are acting like it was big pro sports championship. The olson twins were corny but entertaining to watch. This movie is unrealistic that Emma (ashley) and Sam Mary Kate were on 2 different teams. (It's a rule that siblings be on same sports team) This movie has bad quality actors and a unrealistic plot.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable way to pass the time.......2007-04-08

No, this movie is not in the Casablanca or Gone With The Wind class, but so what? It's still a nice little fantasy...and if you like the romance genre, and a person knows how to lighten up and not overanalyze movies, then you'll totally get it...and like it!

I thought Rick Springfield did a pretty good job in this flick, and I also liked seeing two of my other favorite actors in it: Stephanie Beacham (Dynasty II: The Colbys) and Ian Richardson (BAPS).

Only problem: I want to know how to find the piece of artwork featured in this movie..,The picture of the woman looking in a mirror. Anyone know what it's called and who painted it?

5 out of 5 stars A TOUCHING LOVE STORY - A TOUCH OF FRANCE!.......2005-01-15

Trouble starts when Domenique asks her bookish sister, Kimberly Jamison to switch places with her. Twins do that sometimes.

Kim does not feel comfortable with her sisters' life style - but boy are they beautiful. The gal not the life style.

Domenique finally admits to a drinking problem, helped by our villian, but does not want to give up her place as a top fashion model.

Kim is afraid that she cannot fool the elderly designer of the famous House of Duroche or their model's dresser.

When she meets the American partner, Philippe de Claremont sparks are struck - good or bad is debatible!

Enter our villian. Kim is not aware of Domenique's dealings with him. [I've seen him before]

Ah, but love blossoms in the strangest places. Beautiful background - Philippe's sister and their home. Wonderful Romance
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- GREAT addition to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Rick Springfield Rocks!!!.......2004-05-04

This was a great tv movie. It made me remember how cute Rick is. The story revolves around twin girls, who switch places so that one can get over her problem with alcohol. She is a model, while the didter who takes her place is an art history major. She has to learn to be a model, and many funny and swwet things happen. It was very well done for a romance. I give it a thumbs up!!
