The sixth Pink Panther comedy was the last to star Peter Sellers (the following film in the series incorporated previously unseen footage), and it was also the last in the series to show any signs of genuine inspiration. It's a weak entry in the Panther pantheon, involving a rather mundane plot about a "French Connection" drug deal that leads Inspector Clouseau--presumed murdered and now sleuthing incognito--to Hong Kong for a brash, slapstick finale that almost compensates for the routine gags that precede it. Sellers and director Blake Edwards are coasting along smoothly here, and some of the gags pay off in well-earned laughs--particularly with a clever nod to Dr. Strangelove when Clouseau dons a Toulouse-Lautrec costume. Another highlight finds Clouseau disguised as an old sea captain, complete with a leaky inflatable parrot (it looks more like a purple puffin) resting limply on his shoulder. But a later attempt to spoof Mafia kingpins is hardly up to snuff for a talent as original as Sellers, and Dyan Cannon lacks the comedic sensibility to make the most of her role as a druglord's vengeful ex-mistress. Some of the physical gags are amazingly elaborate, and it's still a riot to hear Sellers perfecting (or is that murdering?) his hilarious French accent, but while it's adequately enjoyable this movie makes you long for the glory days of the Pink Panther franchise. --Jeff Shannon

Cue the Henry Mancini music and watch out for Cato--the gist of the Pink Panther series has been gathered in a six-disc boxed set. At the center of it is Peter Sellers's incarnation of inspector Jacques Clouseau, a hopelessly bumbling detective with a genius for resting his hands in the wrong place (on the surface of a spinning globe, for instance) and mangling the English language.

Writer-director Blake Edwards cast Peter Ustinov as Clouseau in The Pink Panther, but Ustinov dropped out just before shooting began. Edwards (who recounts this story in a spotty commentary track included here) and Sellers bonded over their affection for Laurel and Hardy, and immediately transformed the character of Clouseau into a walking sight gag. The first film has a delicious swinging sixties vibe, while jewel thief David Niven, Claudia Cardinale, and Capucine occupy as much screen time as Sellers. Sellers really hits his stride in A Shot in the Dark, an elegantly funny tale of Clouseau sleuthing out a murder investigation. This one introduced Herbert Lom, as the increasingly frazzled Inspector Dreyfus, and Burt Kwouk, as Clouseau's houseboy-nemesis Cato. Sellers and Edwards, whose relationship was stormy, put Clouseau aside for over 10 years, until a trilogy of mid-1970s comedies restored the character to commercial (and dare we say cultural) primacy.

Unfortunately, the very funny comeback picture, Return of the Pink Panther, is absent from this set due to rights issues with the studios involved. The Pink Panther Strikes Again has Dreyfus going bananas and targeting Clouseau; Revenge of the Pink Panther puts Clouseau in a hilarious series of disguises, climaxing in a wonderfully mounted sequence in Hong Kong. (Throughout the series, the calm, classical staging of gags by Blake Edwards reminds you of what a lost art this has become.) Trail of the Pink Panther looks better now than it did when originally released in 1982, shortly after Sellers's death; it's a batch of unused Sellers routines from previous pictures, strung together with a loose plot. In other words, it's a "deleted scenes" extra, and quite funny at times.

Subsequent efforts Curse of the Pink Panther and Son of the Pink Panther are neither included nor mentioned. A half-hour documentary gives pleasant memories from Edwards, but feels incomplete. The cartoon Panther gets his own 11-minute mini-doc, plus six cartoon shorts including the Oscar-winning "The Pink Phink." --Robert Horton

Just 4 stars. The missing one is for the missing "The Return of the Pink Panther (1974)". If you are looking for extreme and healthy fun, no one could it be better than Sellers to pop ups your laughings, he was great doing any role. This is a delicious collection, just improve the one buying the missing "..return", and of course..."The Party"

It is absolutely first class entertainment. It is intelligent, witty, silly, "classy" - something we rarely achieve these days. Gather your family and give them an education in how to develop a keen sense of humor or, even better, invite your friends to watch - don't forget the martinis.

My dad was always talking about how he wanted this boxed set on DVD since he found out it existed. Christmas rolled around and he hadn't mentioned it in a while, so I surprised him with it and he was thrilled. The set is very nicely packaged, very high quality, and looks very nice. Also, my dad was pleased to see a couple of the lesser known movies (he said two are very common on TV but the others you hardly ever see). He's very happy with it, and I am very happy with my purchase. Well worth the money!

Fun to watch and relive these fine films on a nice wide-screen plasma TV. It will take you back to a more innocent age. Hard to watch if you are using a 27" tube set however.

Description

The clueless Inspector Clouseau has everyone fooled - unwittingly, of course - in this "uproarious"(NBC-TV) howler starring the incomparable Peter Sellers along with Robert Webber as an insecure drug lord and Dyan Cannon as his sexpot mistress. Featuring wild chases, spectacular pratfalls and "the funniest Clouseau blunder yet" (Newsweek), "this Revenge just couldn't be sweeter!" (ABC-TV)! Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) happily believes that Clouseau has died in an explosion, but in reality, he's alive and busy mangling a case! Using absurdly mismatched costumes and accents, Clouseau travels to Hong Kong to intercept a major heroin deal, bringing Cato (Burt Kwouk) and the drug lord's jilted lover (Cannon) with him. The only problem is, Dreyfus is on the case too!

5 out of 5 stars Perfected Clouseau.......2006-12-21

Forget about the fact that this is one of the funniest, laugh out loud movies ever made for a moment. Take a close look at Peter Sellers in this film as the perfected character of Inspector Clouseau shines through. Far from the self-parodying, stale performances that many actors give when reviving roles for sequels, Seller's performance in this and the previous The Pink Panther Strikes Again (his last two Clouseau performances) are perfect and rank in the pantheon of all-time greatest comedic performances.

The Clouseau character is so perfected that practically every movement, every word spoken, elicits laughter. Prepare to crack up as Sellers (a Brit) portrays the bungling French chief inspector. With his goofy French accent, the self-proclaimed "master of disguises" gives us hilarious impersonations of (among others) a "Salty Sweedish Sea-dog," Toulouse Lautrec ("sorry, I'm a little short)" a peasant Chinaman, and an Italian mobster ("Mama mia, spaghettini Al Pacino"). The film is worth seeing for just those few moments, alone. But the hilarious plot yields us so much more.

More classic "battles" with sidekick Kato (with the obligatory damage to the downstairs apartment underneath Clouseau's), the conversion of Clouseau's apartment into a bordello, breaking and entering into the disco, the summary disposal of the vaunted assassin Chong (and the sound effects of his extended fall), and many other scenes leave you laughing for long after.

Although the classic dialog lines probably remain more relegated to cult classic status than, say, the classic lines from Seinfeld that have seeped into pop consciousness, one may still hear some oft repeated phrases from the loyal fan base of this classic: "It's green," "I've got a bit of a cold in the chest, you know," "The Pohhhp?", "Mr. and Mrs. Low Key," and of course "A very good month for the vintage, you know."

Bottom line is, whether you're a die-hard fan or not, this is one of the two Pink Panther movies that everyone must see. You don't need to see any prior films from the series to understand it. If you don't find it funny, there's a stick somewhere you need to find and move somewhere else.

4 out of 5 stars Good Enough!.......2006-11-08

I don't think that this one is the best out of all the ones that I've seen. So far I've seen The Pink Panther, A Shot In The Dark, Inspector Clouseau, The Return Of The Pink Panther, The Pink Panther Strikes Again, this one, and The Pink Panther {2006}. This one is still pretty good though. It also has a great cast. Peter Sellers as Chief Inspector Jacques Clouseau, Herbert Lom as the returning {somehow} Dreyfus, Dyan Cannon as Simone Legree, Robert Webber as Philippe Douvier, and Burt Kwouk as Cato. There is pretty much only one reason I don't like it to much. That is that Cato doesn't attack Clouseau at anytime except the beginning. Otherwise, this film is very good. That was my review.

3 out of 5 stars Not nearly as funny as I expected it to be.......2006-08-06

I remember trying to watch some of these Pink Panther movies back when I was a kid - and really not getting the humor at all. Now, all these years later, firmly convinced of Peter Sellers' comic genius after watching Dr. Strangelove, I thought that I would surely laugh heartily at Inspector Clouseau's antics. It's unfortunate that the first such film to cross my media-consuming path was this one, The Revenge of the Pink Panther, Seller's last true film of the series. I have no doubt that the earlier films are certifiably funny, but this one really just sort of sits there - no energy, few laughs, and not much of a story. Sellers' unique accent is funny, but at times it's about all this movie has going for it.

As usual, somebody is out to kill Chief Inspector Clouseau - this time it's a dirty businessman named Douvier (Robert Webber) attempting to secure his somewhat weakened position in a French Connection of heroin smuggling. Again, as usual, Clouseau manages to survive the assassination attempt through a most bizarre, thoroughly bumbling turn of events. This time, though, the bad guys and everyone else think Clouseau is dead (and Clouseau himself has a little trouble convincing anyone, including his nutty sidekick Cato, that's he's the recently departed Chief Inspector). Thinking his hated nemesis is finally out of the picture, former Chief Inspector Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) leaves the sanitarium and returns to his old job, taking charge of the investigation into Clouseau's murder. To his horror, though, he can't shove Clouseau out of his mind because he keeps seeing him wherever he goes. As for Clouseau, he goes "under covers" to find the guys who tried to kill him. With the help of Douvier's former mistress, Simone Legree (Dyan Cannon), he follows the gang to Hong Kong intent on breaking the French Connection case wide open. Hot on his trail is Dreyfus, who has finally become convinced that his sightings of Clouseau were not his indicative of his madness reasserting itself. With all parties finally together in the same place, a seemingly unavoidable, tiresome chase scene finally brings the activities to an end.

I would certainly not advise anyone to repeat my mistake of watching The Revenge of the Pink Panther before seeing any of the first five films. Those earlier productions were undoubtedly much funnier than this rather tired denouement to Sellers' career as the bumbling detective. If you weren't particularly enthused about the earlier ones, you undoubtedly won't walk away overly impressed by this one, either. Some people just don't "get" this type of slapstick-oriented comedy - and I may actually be one of those people. I'm not going to judge the whole series based on this sixth film alone, though, as it's generally regarded by fans as the least entertaining of the bunch (not counting the films that followed Sellers' untimely death in 1980, of course).

5 out of 5 stars "Special delivery--a beumb!".......2006-07-16

The sixth in the "Pink Panther" series, "Revenge of the Pink Panther" is my favorite of Blake Edwards' classic comedies.

Revenge is sweet... and hilarious... especially when Chief Inspector Jaques Clouseau (played by comedy genius Peter Sellers) is looking for it. Inspector Dreyfus (the delightfully insane Herbert Lom), Clouseau's arch-rival, is convinced that the famous Pink Panther detective has died in an explosion, but Clouseau is really alive and tackling another case.

Using various disguises and costumes, provided by master of disguise Professor Auguste Balls (played by Graham Stark), the bumbling French detective sets out to catch a scheming drug lord (Robert Webber). Along with the beautiful Simone LeGree (played by Dyan Cannon) and Clouseau's manservant, Cato (the gut-busting Burt Kwouk), the Inspector heads to Hong Kong to track down the vicious gangsters and avoid the evil Dreyfus along the way!

It gets more and more hilarious every time I watch it. Out of all ten "Pink Panther" films, this one truly makes me laugh out loud, especially the scenes when Clouseau dresses up as an "old salty Swedish sea dog" and the car chase throughout the streets of Hong Kong.

I'm not going to judge the whole series based on this sixth film alone, though, as it's generally regarded by fans as the least entertaining of the bunch (not counting the films that followed Sellers' untimely death in 1980, of course).

3 out of 5 stars I Really Wanted to Like this One.......2006-04-03

I was never really fond of this film, even though it was Peter Sellers' last actual portrayal of Inspector Clouseau. It started out excellent but slowly deteriorated into mundane and silly slapstick. By the time it reached Hong Kong I thought it was terrible. Even Henry Mancini's score seems a little tired in this one. It all seems like very forced filmmaking. I suppose some of the same things could be said about CURSE OF THE PINK PANTHER but in that film the script follows a logical progression from the classic Clouseau skits to slapstick and finally into the absurd. It seemed to work wildly in that film. I actually found the scenes in TRAIL OF THE PINK PANTHER with Peter Sellers much funnier than in THE REVENGE OF THE PINK PANTHER. THE REVENGE OF THE PINK PANTHER remains a weak entry in the series for me.
