A Latina woman from the Bronx shakes up her life--which consists of a difficult marriage and three kids--by taking a job at a Manhattan recording company. Playing the central character, Lauren Vélez has a captivating rough beauty that suggests her suspension between misery and grace. Director Darnell Martin also has a kind of unpolished approach that keeps the film looking a bit amateurish. But Martin's observations of and insights into the heroine's world--a slice of American Latino life that hasn't been particularly well represented on film--are original and potent. Griffin Dunne is very good in a supporting role as the heroine's exploitative boss. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars I liked it like that!!.......2007-06-20

This movie has been out for years but I just stumbled upon it recently on late night cable TV.

I loved it! It was wonderful. I loved the emphasis put on the Puerto Rican community, I loved the up close, gritty look at average New York life. I loved the interactions between Chino, Lisette and the kids, they weren't perfect parents, but they loved their kids. I just loved how realistic it all was.

I'm a black woman, born and raised in California, I have no idea how life in the Bronx is but I definitely related to a lot in this movie.

My favorite character was Alexis, she was a trip!

5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars Wepa que viva Puerto Rico!.......2007-01-17

This is one of my all time fave movies. Jon Seda did an excellent job as he always does. I especially loved seeing my idol from childhood Rita Morena ( and fellow Humacao resident) act in this movie. This movie is a must see! So much good Boricua acting going on!

4 out of 5 stars Attempt.......2006-11-12

I think this movie made a decent attempt to capture the struggle of living in poverty as Nuyoricans. It has a good amount of poignant moments from beginning to the very end and also its equivalent share of wacky hilarious moments, which I wont spill and spoil for you that should buy this movie if even you are latino or not, it doesnt matter. I think anyone can relate or try to the struggles we personally face or others do. I think the fact that I expected too much realism, being Puerto Rican myself, was a reason why I could not digest the exaggeration it portrayed. If you want more realism about what it truly means to be hispanic or want to know more and you are not , please, please check out Manito I promise you will not regret it and will feel so much more moved than this movie.

4 out of 5 stars sweet.......2006-11-06

As a Lauren Valez fan I would have loved this film even if she just came on screen and recited the alphabet. This is a sweet film about the trials of relationships when you have friends and family involved. Jon Seda is great as a tough working father whose wife and family is his Achilles heel. Lauren Valez is the young mother who has to think fast when her husband ends up in jail. Fans of either actor would like this film, it's from the early 1990's, and you can see that their acting skills were still being honed at this stage. I really did like the film though, especially the ambiguous ending. Not bad for a Friday evening treat after a hard week at work.

5 out of 5 stars perfect love story.......2006-07-09

I have always loved this movie. It made me cry and it also made me laugh. If your a young woman or man you will love everything about this movie.

Set in Singapore in 1977, That's the Way I Like It follows Hock (Adrian Pang), a Bruce Lee fan, as he discovers the joys of disco when he's dragged unwillingly to Saturday Night Fever. Initially bored, he comes to life when he sees the slick dance moves. He starts taking classes with his friend Mei (Medaline Tan), who, unbeknownst to Hock, wishes they were more than friends. Meanwhile, Hock is smitten with another girl in the class, whose boyfriend isn't pleased. Fortunately, Tony Manero himself (Dominic Pace) comes down off the screen to give Hock advice. Themes of traditional culture wrestling with Western influence recur--Hock's sister reads romance novels compulsively, several characters have given themselves Western names--but always with a light touch. While the acting is unpolished, it's sincere and enthusiastic; the movie is formulaic but not wholly predictable, and when Hock gets his groove on, it takes off. That's the Way I Like It also makes good use of its '70s soundtrack, even though most of the versions are not by the original artists. Though marketed as if it were a foreign-language film, the movie is in English. --Bret Fetzer

Description

An irresistibly sexy comedy set to a hot soundtrack of '70s dance hits, THAT'S THE WAY I LIKE IT offers a decidedly offbeat look at the fun, fashion, and flash of the disco culture! It's the hilarious story of Hock, an ordinary underachiever who discovers disco when his favorite kung fu movie is replaced by "Forever Fever," a low-budget SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER knockoff! In an outrageous turn of events, the movie's main character comes to life and decides to become Hock's guardian angel, teaching him all about life, love, and the power of disco! Filled with the catchy music and outrageous styles of the incomparable disco era -- you'll love the way this average guy rises above expectations ... with the help of a little shake, shake, shake!

5 out of 5 stars A nice surprise!.......2006-12-18

I don't know how I ended up with this film, but I loved it. It was a really sweet story, and having lived in Singapore for a bit, I loved hearing the Singlish spoken by the characters. But, it was also a very enjoyable movie, with lots of twists and turns, some predictable, others not - some very funny moments and some very touching scenes. Overall, it wasn't Oscar material, but it is a great movie to just watch and have a good time.

5 out of 5 stars Not what you would expect..........2005-12-10

First off, I would like to say I am not a fan of comedy movies. My favorite genre is horror and the few comedy movies I do like are usually mean-spirited. I would also say I am not big on dancing, especially disco (sorry i'm a Gen X'er). I do like martial arts, but let's face it, this movie is presenting itself as a dancing movie, and the fighting is a very small aspect of the movie.

I honestly would have never watched this movie, if I had not been forced to. This is one of those movies that wouldn't even catch my eye in the video store. Movie about about dancing and disco? HAHAHAHA ...never in a million years. It is so ironic that my reaction to being forced to watch this movie mirrored that of the main character Hock, as his friends forced him to sit through the dancing movie "Forever Fever". Like him, contempt slowly turned to interest, and by the end of the movie I was really "digging it".

There are many laugh out loud moments as Hock joins dancing classes so that he can win a disco competition to buy the motorcycle of his dreams. He has many obstacles in his way, learning to dance, his manager at work, the SOB boyfriend of the girl he is chasing and his slightly askew family. But in the end, with a little help from his guardian angel, he learns the more important things in life.

I love this movie, and after renting it for the fourth time from the local video store, I decided I might as well buy it. This movie has alot of heart and humor. The romance aspect of it was also warming. So to all you normal males, too macho to watch a film about dancing, give this movie a chance, see it with your girl, you won't be sorry.

4 out of 5 stars Very entertaining.......2005-09-05

A delightful film from Singapore with english spoken dialogue. A spoof of "SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER" thats full of humor and fun.
A great rental and fun one to own.

5 out of 5 stars "Saturday Night Fever" Done Asian Style..........2004-07-21

When Hock's friends drag him to see some funky dance movie, it's kicking and screaming. Yet one glimpse into disco's glitzy nightlife and he ditches his Bruce Lee obsession for a pair of bell-bottoms and permed hair. It's "Saturday Night Fever" all over again, from the butterfly collars to the sweaty dance-offs, but put a little Asian spin on, add a touch of spoof, sprinkle it with some dry humor and top it off with an advice-giving John Travolta look alike... well, could it get more fun than that?

Frankly, it wasn't as campy as it might sound. They didn't take it over the top, but kept it within the genre of "very good film," instead of making it slapstick. They dealt with some serious issues in relationships that seemed more real than devised for cinema. The acting wasn't always perfect, but the athleticism of the dancing was incredible, and the storyline was entertaining and actually refreshingly unique.

If you're a fan of the independent comedy, this is a great one.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You.......2003-11-28
