A quirky and sneakily funny delight from the mid-'70s, this oddball comedy stars Jeff Bridges and Sam Waterston as a pair of modern cattle rustlers who have targeted a local rancher--and then steal his herd one cow at a time. The rancher (Clifton James) can't figure out who's stealing his cows, so he hires an elderly detective (Slim Pickens) to solve the mystery. Directed by Frank Perry from a deliciously dry script by Thomas McGuane, the film offers a startlingly varied cast that includes Elizabeth Ashley, Harry Dean Stanton, and Richard Bright, with an engaging soundtrack by Jimmy Buffett (who also shows up in the film). Watch it just to find out who Bob Dog is. --Marshall Fine

Description
Jeff Bridges and Sam Waterston star as an oddball team of modern-day cattle rustlers in this quirky, inventive portrait of the no longer wild West (Newsweek). If you're ready for a little not-so-innocent frontier fun, for 'some desire under the elms...some smoldering glances at the OK Corral, then head straight for Rancho Deluxe. Montana's Big Sky country is the setting for this whacked-out western that literally litters the landscape with the crazed descendants of those hardy pioneers whose covered wagons have been replaced by ubiquitous pickup trucks (LA Herald-Examiner). Among these deviated denizens are Slim Pickens as a crafty old stock detective, Harry DeanStanton and Richard Bright as a pair of clumsy cowhands and Clifton James and Elizabeth Ashley as abored couple from Schenectady who bought their ranch with the profits from a chain of beauty parlors.

Don't fence me in.......2007-03-26
Thomas McGuane scripted this anti-western western comedy about two modern-day cattle rustlers in Montana who do what they do out of sheer boredom. Jack McGhee (Jeff Bridges) is from a wealthy background, while his partner Cecil Colson (Sam Waterston) is a Native American. They rustle a steer from rancher John Brown (Clifton James) which sets off a chain of basically unconnected incidents, most of them meant to be funny. The movie tracks the two rustlers but never really gets involved with them: the picture often feels as distant from them as they are from the world around them. As with much of McGuane's fiction, the script is drenched in irony and a sad sort of humor that rarely evokes more than a head-shaking chuckle. Slim Pickens, though, is excellent as an old dottery detective called in to investigate the case.

"The poor people of this state are dope fiends for pick-up trucks.".......2006-06-20
Rancho Deluxe (1975) is one of those films I had sitting on my Amazon wish list for quite some time before I got around to purchasing it, which I did, around November of 2005...then it proceeded to sit on my shelf for a good six months before I got around to watching it, which I did, last night...there just never seemed any urgency in purchasing or watching the film, but I'm glad I did, on both counts. Written by Thomas McGuane (92 in the Shade, Tom Horn) and directed by Frank Perry (David and Lisa, Diary of a Mad Housewife, Mommie Dearest), the film stars Jeff Bridges (Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, Tron, The Big Lebowski) and Sam Waterston (The Great Gatsby, Heaven's Gate, The Killing Fields) back before he became a fixture on the television series "Law & Order". Also appearing is Slim Pickens (One-Eyed Jacks, Dr. Strangelove), Clifton James (David and Lisa, Cool Hand Luke), Elizabeth Ashley (Vampire's Kiss), Charlene Dallas (The Great Bank Hoax), Harry Dean Stanton (Kelly's Heroes, Alien), Richard `Al Neri' Bright (The Godfather), Patti D'Arbanville (Time After Time), Bert Conway (Little Big Man), and Joe Spinell (The Godfather: Part II, Rocky, Maniac) in a small, but memorable bit part.
Bridges and Waterston play Jack McKee and Cecil Colson, respectively, a pair of ne'er-do-wells who get by rustling the occasional head of cattle, hacking it up (earning themselves the as `the chainsaw rustlers' moniker in the local press), and using the beef to pay for various things like rent and such...and it's not just some old reservation beef they steal, but rancher John Brown's (James) fine prize winning, grain fed steer. Anyway, some stuff happens, Brown puts Curt (Stanton) and Burt (Bright), a couple of his ranch hands, on the case, a prize bull gets stolen and ransomed back to Brown, who eventually hires a seemingly doddering stock detective named Henry Beige (Pickens) and his comely niece Laura (Dallas) to run down the rustlers. Well, it turns out Curt and Burt do discover the identity of the boys, but instead of letting their boss in on the information, they team up with Jack and Cecil to fleece their boss out of one, big score. The story ambles along from here as Cecil's father (Spinell in some obvious `old man' make-up) relates to us the scourge of the pick-up truck, Jimmy Buffett sings a song in a honky tonk bar, Brown becomes flustered with Beige's lack of results, Curt takes a real shine towards Laura, a Continental Mark IV gets shot up something fierce with a buffalo rifle, and I learned you probably shouldn't use a Hoover to vacuum Native American rugs (the rugs could unravel). Soon after Brown begins to follow up his own lead and the big day comes when the four cohorts make their move not realizing there may be a joker in the deck.
I think one of the issues a lot of people who don't care for this film have is the fact the story seems non sequitur, without clear direction, often sliding off on unpredictable and seemingly unnecessary tangents. It feels like a bunch of loosely connected scenes were filmed, and then mashed together to create a semblance of a film. While I'd agree this lack of focus can be kind of annoying, I soon learned it was better to just go with the seemingly uneven flow of things and see where it took me. As others have stated the comedy is fairly subtle, and easy to miss if you're busy grousing about how the film doesn't seem to be going anywhere (fact is it does go somewhere, just not too quickly). There were few memorable bits in this film for me, the first being as Beige and his niece Laura sit down to dinner with Brown, his wife (played by Ashley), and the ranch hands Burt and Curt, for the first time after arriving at the ranch. When the conversation turns to Laura, she comes off as a real goodie goodie going on about how she works with the elderly and just wants to make people happy, so much so she breaks out in song, prompting her uncle to put and end to that noise. It was a very brief sequence, but it made me laugh. Another bit comes when Jack and Cecil, celebrating with some of the ill-gotten funds they squeezed out of Brown during the kidnapping of his prize bull, have a drunken soiree in their home with their girlfriends who happen to be sisters, one of them played by Patti D'Arbanville. The next morning we see the angry father, played by Bert Conway, showing up at the house, with a whole slew of relatives in tow (including the grandparents), intent on exposing the debauchery his daughters have engaged in to the entire family (it's a bit late in the game for Pops to be concerned with his daughters' moral improprieties if you ask me). The third bit that stuck out in my mind is when an anxious Brown reveals he's got a hot lead on the rustlers, and lets Beige in on the scoop (at this point he's very dissatisfied with Beige as he suspects the decrepit old fool might be fleecing him out of his money). He wakes Beige up from his afternoon nap, to which Beige seems annoyed mainly because Brown interrupted a fabulous Egyptian themed dream he was having (unsure his part in the dream, he's eager to get back to it before it's lost). I thought Bridges and Waterston made a good showing, but there seemed not nearly enough emphasis on their characters to make them truly interesting and engaging (what was with the scene with Bridges visiting his well-to-do parents and them inviting an old girlfriend over?). As a result, we're left with the supporting cast bearing much more of the story than I would have expected, and doing it well. I do give director Perry a certain amount of credit given the number of characters running around as while things got a tad confusing at times, eventually everything slides into place as the film comes to a close.
The picture quality, presented in both fullscreen (1.33:1) and anamorphic widescreen (1.85:1), is a bit grainy, but I couldn't tell if it was meant to be that way, or if it stemmed from a poor transfer. The Dolby Digital mono audio comes through uneven, as there are a number of soft spots and I was continually adjusting the audio to compensate. As far as extras there's an original theatrical trailer and subtitles in both French and Spanish (no English). Had this DVD release had a cleaner picture and a more even audio track I would have gone with four out of five stars, but instead I think three stars is more suitable. Also, I would have preferred they incorporated the original poster artwork on the DVD case, rather than what they ended up going with, which looks a little goofy.

Don't respect anyone who doesn't like this film!.......2006-04-18
1. It's incredibly well written and very, very funny (Tom McGuane scripts); 2. It's got some of the best ensemble acting and best one-liners of its time; 3. During the course of the film, no one dies or is shot or knifed or choked or run over (we do see a couple of steers go down tho); 4. Warren Oates is playing harmonica in Jimmy Buffett's band at The Wrangler bar; 5. A "Pong" machine is featured in the story; 6. Wonderfully photographed by William Fraker who really shows off the Livingston area of Montana's Big Sky; 7. Only film to feature breakfast and bathing at Chico Hot Springs. If you don't like this film you have no sense of humor and you should reconsider your place on earth.
Truly a waste.......2006-03-22
Some of my favorite actors, BUT if it wasn't so much trouble, I would send it back for a refund!

"I've started horses since I was twelve years old and have been bit, kicked, bucked off and run over. I've tried every physical means to contain my horse in an effort to keep myself from getting killed. I started to realize that things would come much easier for me once I learned why a horse does what he does. This method worked well for me because of the kinship that develops between horse and rider. Horses and life, It's all the same to me."

Buck Brannaman
Snaffle Bit DVD
Great video for both the beginner and the more advanced rider. It takes you step by step from how to put the bit into the horse's mouth to how to tie the reins safely around the horse's neck to how to use the mecate to how to safely mount the green horse. It is also an excellent video for more advanced riders because it reminds you of some of the important things that you should always pay attention to, such as a soft feel.
Shows some very important basic maneuvers that everyone should really focus on. He shows you different exercises on three levels of horses: Green - about ten rides; intermediate - solid in the snaffle but not quite ready for the hackamore; and finished in the snaffle - ready for the hackamore.
He lets you know what you can and should expect from each horse at each stage of his development. He also lets you know what you cannot and should not expect from each horse.
If you are interested in roping, he also gives you an idea of how you might want to approach it with a green horse. If you want a more detailed idea of what you might want to do, you should check out his ranch roping videos.
Overall, this is a fantastic video for any rider of any ability level and for any riding discipline. The quality of the sound and filming is excellent as well.

Fantastic.......2006-12-03
Buck Brannaman
Hackamore DVD
Buck explains what the hackamore is and how its size is determined. He also gives very clear instructions on how to tie your mecate and reins to the bosal and how to adjust it so that it fits your horse correctly. And he shows you how to shape your bosal (A note of caution: Buck uses a shaping block on his bosal, but if you use a shaping block you will want to be careful not to pound it down too hard. The only thing holding your bosal together is the heel knot. You can break this pretty quickly if you overdo it with the shaping block and then you're out of a two or three hundred dollar bosal.) Buck uses a mane hair mecate in this video. If you've never used one of these, I would highly recommend it. They have a different feel than a cotton rope that I can't quite explain. If you want a really nice mane hair mecate, you might want to check out Sara Hagel's web site. She makes them herself and each one is a work of art.
Buck explains some basic maneuvers that you will want to do, some of the pitfalls that you might encounter and what to do when those things happen. He demonstrates several different exercises, such as hind quarters to the left/ front quarters to the right with a leading and supporting rein; exercises at the walk, trot and canter while maintaining a soft feel; haunches in; smooth transitions between gaits both upward and downward; two tracking; spins; exercises at the lope, such as spirals, or loping short circles (I've found that his particular exercise helps a lot with controlling my horse's speed at the lope); counter canter; lead changes - both simple and flying - and how to achieve them; how to get some speed and a soft feel on a back up. (I've found that this method really does work.); how to back in circles - (this exercise has helped me to develop a better feel for how my horse is actually operating). And he demonstrates these things on a 16/2 green horse, not a finished hackamore horse, so that you can see what you might expect from your own horse. Buck is very good at striving for precision with this horse, but having patience and not demanding perfection.
Then, he briefly shows how he puts all of these exercises to use by doing a cow working segment at the end. Here he explains what he is trying to accomplish with a green horse while doing a little cutting and a little roping.
Both the sound and the video quality are top notch.

Magnificent.......2006-12-05
The Two Rein and the Bridle
In this video, Buck explains the various equipment that you will need and how to use it.
He explains that he has gone from a 5/8" bosal to a 3/8" bosal and a ¼" mecate. He shows both a half breed mouth piece and a spade bit. While he explains the mechanics of how the mouth piece is made with a flair for the bosal to fit beneath it, I wish that he would have gone into greater detail regarding how each of these mouth pieces actually operates in the horse's mouth. Also, I wish that he would have discussed the romal reins in greater detail. He might have wanted to address such questions as why they are made the way that they are, what is important in a good set of romal reins, rein chains, etc.
Since you won't lead your horse by the reins, he shows you how to tie a neck rope around your horse's neck for leading. He also shows you the use of the bosalito. He explains that this really serves no purpose, but is more of a tradition and a sign of respect for the effort that your horse has put into his education to this point in his life. He shows you how to tie it to the forelock and how to take it off. I think that this is a really neat tradition to carry on. He also shows the traditional vaquero way of trimming your horse's mane to indicate his level of education.
He shows you how to hold and handle both reins and reviews basic exercises that you will want to do at the walk, trot and canter, such as haunches in, getting and maintaining a soft feel, leg yields, subtle transitions between gaits, simple changes, flying changes, counter canter and backing in circles.
At the end, he does a little cutting and roping and shows how you will put all of these exercises to work in a cow working situation. Here he talks a little about teaching your horse to mirror the cow, pressing off and drawing the cow to you if you want to. He does his cutting on a 16/2 Thoroughbred that is really getting with the program! He also demonstrates how you might gently handle the roping of a cow with two ropes - one around the neck and the other around the hind legs.
Overall, this is a fantastic video. If you want to watch a master at his craft, you can't do any better than this three DVD series. Watching Buck ride a horse is poetry in motion. It's the picture that you want to have in your own mind as you ride your own horse. If you ever have an opportunity to ride in one of his clinics, or just watch, do it. Besides being a superb horseman, he is a fine human being.

Buck's first video, Colt Breaking has been out of print for over ten years. It was discontinued after we produced "Groundwork" but recently Buck had the chance to view the master tape once again. Here are Buck's views on the original Brannaman Colt Breaking tape:
"A number of years ago we made a video called Colt Breaking. We came across the original tape recently and I had a chance to look at it again. We shot the whole thing in a friend's round pen in California back in 1988.
A lot has happened in my life since then but I thought some of you might enjoy seeing this tape. It's the original with nothing changed. We've made a Limited Edition DVD to add to your collection. Hope you enjoy it. Happy trails."
