That rare thing, decency, shines out of Wilbur (Wants to Kill Himself), a wonderful and dark-humored comedy about a would-be suicide. The depressive Wilbur (Jamie Sives) is the opposite of his big-hearted brother, Harbour (Adrian Rawlins), yet he remains irresistible to women--including Harbour's new live-in girlfriend. Director Lone Scherfig uses the gray-skied Edinburgh location in much the same way she did her native Denmark in the terrific Italian for Beginners; the gloomy setting belies the vaguely magical things that might happen to the characters. Scherfig knows just how to balance different tones (and in a comedy about a suicidal man, she has to), and she's great with actors, even in small roles. Special standouts here are the beaming Rawlins and Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen (King Arthur), as a stoical, chain-smoking doctor. How nice it is to see a movie that makes you feel good without coming on all icky about it. --Robert Horton
Description
The chronically suicidal Wilbur and his good-hearted big brother Harbour are in their thirties, when their father dies, leaving them with nothing but a worn down second-hand bookshop in Glasgow. Wilbur survives yet another suicide attempt and goes to the hospital, where he meets Horst a cynical psychologist and his empathic head nurse, Moira. Like Harbour, they believe that Wilbur needs a girlfriend. But even though women fall for Wilbur all the time, they can't get close to him. In fact, it is Harbour who falls in love when a shy and intense woman, Alice, enters the lives of the brothers. Alice lives a life in isolation with her little daughter, Mary. She supplements her job as a cleaning lady at the hospital's surgical ward, selling books that the patients have left behind. Little by little, Wilbur, Harbour and Alice become inseparable. Wilbur starts regaining his lust for life, Alice starts to come out of her shell, and Mary starts reading the thousands of books in the second-hand bookshop. Harbour has never been happier, but he carries a deep secret that threatens to surface.

"You can't kill the bogeyman," the children insist to a terrorized Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) in the original Halloween. How right they are. Laurie is gone, but guess who's back in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers? Acting as if the third entry never existed, this installment picks up 10 years after the original, with mad maniac Myers in a coma and moved to a new facility. But wouldn't you know it that as soon as a loose-lipped orderly lets slip that Myers has a surviving niece he springs back into action, leaving a bloody trail of corpses on the road to Haddonfield. Donald Pleasance returns as Dr. Loomis, scarred and crippled from his last encounter with Myers and seething with a fanatical zeal to stop the freak from repeating his previous rampage. Pleasance is the best thing about the film as an aging hero seemingly on the verge of madness who drags a bum leg in his manic rush to save little orphan Jamie (Danielle Harris), the 10-year-old waif terrorized by her homicidal uncle. Director Dwight Little has managed a generic if professional slasher picture, rife with improbabilities and dominated by a killer whose superhuman powers reach near-mystical dimensions, but he delivers the goods: shocks, stabs, and cold, cruel killings. --Sean Axmaker

Description

TEN YEARS AGO, HE CHANGED THE FACE OF HALLOWEEN. TONIGHT, HE'S BACK. A decade ago, he butchered 16 people trying to get to his sister. He was shot and incinerated, but still the entity that Dr. Sam Loomis (the legendary Donald Pleasence) calls "Evil on two legs" would not die. Tonight, Michael Myers has come home again…to kill! This time, Michael returns to Haddonfield for Jamie Lloyd (Danielle Harris of HALLOWEEN 5 and THE LAST BOY SCOUT) - the orphaned daughter of Laurie Strode - and her babysitter Rachel (Ellie Cornell of HALLOWEEN 5 and HOUSE OF THE DEAD). Can Loomis stop Michael before the unholy slaughter reaches his innocent young niece? Michael Pataki, Sasha Jenson and Kathleen Kinmont co-star in this smash sequel that marked the long-awaited return to the original storyline and remains infamous for its startling twist ending and graphic violence.

5 out of 5 stars It isn't a man.......2007-06-26

This is still the sequel to Halloween 2 over H20 for me. Dannielle Harris is just brilliant in this film at such a young age. Donald also delivers as usual. this brought the franchise to new heights and spawned two more good sequels.

4 out of 5 stars The Return of Michael Myers.......2007-06-18

This movie is a great sequal and is one of my favorites. Lot of suspenes in this one and has a great storyline. my recomenation is to buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Horror Film........2007-06-17

Halloween 4 is an excellent horror film and most certainly one of the best in the Halloween series. This film isnt quite like a lot of horror films around the time it was made and now because it doesnt really rely on blood and gore to scary the piss out of you. It mostly relys on the atmosphere of a dark night and the music. Thats what great horror films are all about is if they can scare you without even showing anything that is remotely scary. This film is an example of that concept. The script, the acting, and the score are incredible. Especially for a horror film. Ive noticed after seeing many horror films that this movie feels like Jaws or Gone With the Wind in terms of quality of every single aspect within it. The shape is performed very good here. The mask is cool as well, unlike what many people say. Here we find the greatest ending of any other Halloween film and one of the best ever filmed. Very good script that is pretty tight through the entire movie. This is a fantastic horror film that still amazes viewers because its aging very well. Highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars MICHAEL IS COMING HOME AGAIN? GOOD SEQUEL! .......2007-05-29

It is really hard to judge the sequels to Halloween. The first film is a classic and none of the sequels come close to it. This 4th installment(3rd featuring Michael)is OK if you can get past the good Dr. Loomis and Michael surviving the explosion at the hospital in the second film. The film looks good and there are some good chills and thrills along the way,but in the end, you feeling like you have seen it all before. Not the worst in the series, thats for sure!

5 out of 5 stars "Die you son of a *****!" Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers.......2007-05-12

In 1988, 10 years after the original Halloween terrorized audiences, Director Dwight H. Little teamed up with executive producer Moustapha Akkad to create what is arguably the greatest Halloween sequel to date.

Laurie Stode's little 8 year old daughter Jamie Lloyd is now orphaned due to a fatal car crash. Michael in the midst of a transfer of sanitariums escapes leaving a bloody ambulence behind. Only Dr. Loomis knows where Michael is heading, and again after 10 years time, nobody believes him. Haddenfield recieves one more night of unholy terror as Michael comes closer and closer to his ultimate goal of killing Jamie.

This film is really effective now and especially when it first came out. In 1988 we saw such great sequels to other horror franchises such as Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason takes Manhatten and A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child. I'm being sarcastic of course as neither of these films got large profit at the box office. This was a fresh and well done shot for the Halloween series. With such memorable sequences such as the roof top chase and the car chase at the end, this movie has very little flaws. i guess my only criticism is that I don't find Michael nearly as scary with sideburns on his mask. This film blew me away as being the best sequel to Halloween. The ending is also the most affective ending aside from H20 and Halloween.

The Divimax edition of this film gives us two new audio commentaries from the likes of Ellie Cornell and Danielle Harris (the two main actors in the movie). Their commentary is good an fun but they don't really know that much about the series or the film itself, I found myself knowing more than they did. Alan B. McElroy's commentary is very immformative and flows well with the movie. It also includes a panal discussion on Halloween 4 and 5 from the 25th anneversary convention which is a great addition as you don't find this particular discussion on the H25: 25 years of terror dvd.

This film deserves 5 stars for giving Halloween a fresh start and the sequel it deserved from the getgo. Sadly, the next two entries sorely lack in the originality that this film brought or the freshness it brought to the franchise.

The series premise continues to stretch so thin it could dissipate. This time, Michael Myers chases his unfortunate niece around, then goes after a family who happen to be living in his former home. This is slasher-ism at its most cynical, and a thoroughly unpleasant, unimaginative, and unredeeming movie. Donald Pleasence, the one holdover from the original film, looks like he'd rather be anywhere than in this thing. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars I Actually Loved This Movie!.......2007-06-19

This more than likely the most underrated film Ive ever seen. No joke. I know the film gets trashed by critics and a lot of the Halloween fans alike. Nevertheless theres still something about the film that keeps me entertained even after Ive watched it 50 times. I really liked the story and the death scenes in the film. Not to mention this is the scariest out of all the Haloween movies. I just never really understood how anyone who likes Horror films cant find something good in this. I always recommend viewers wanting to see this to try to find the Producers Cut of the film. Its not an official release, but it can be found if you know where to look. Most of the time fans of this film make those Producers Cuts. Some of the great things about the film is the score(especially the Producers Cut of the film), the photography, a lot of the acting, and the creepy atmosphere it puts on. This IS the most brutal of all the other Halloween movies. I absloutely love seeing Myers kill people in this film. Im sure that sounds sadistic, but you can root for him sometimes. I always try to give this film credit and love. Ive even spent up to $75 on buying Producers Cuts of the film! Ive always had a soft spot for it. Definitely one of my favorite films. Its not for everyone though. I just recommend to anyone who watches it to have an open mind and try to see some of the awesome things in the film. They are most certainly there.

4 out of 5 stars SCARIEST HALLOWEEN EVER!!!.......2007-06-18

This is the scariest one is the series. Most people hate this one because it explains why michael kills a reveals the cult that is behind all his madness. I usally would hate a film like this but for some reason i did not and i am sure why. If you take aside the whole cult thing it's another great addition to the series. but whatever I like it.

1 out of 5 stars STOP IT ALREADY! DO NOT COME HOME EVER AGAIN!.......2007-06-03

Halloween part 6 The Curse of Michael Myers is the worst entry in the series so far! After a fairly good installment with Halloween part 4 The Return of Michael Myers, they followed it up with, what I thought was the worst Halloween movie ever Halloween part 5 The Revenge of Michael Myers. Now we have the abysmal part 6. This movie is not only boring, it doesn't even try to be consistent with it's past sequels. What happened to Dr. Loomis's Scars on his face and hands? Why is Michael so big and brawny now? Why do they change the Shape's mask in every movie? This movie makes Jason X look like an Oscar winner! I have not seen the director's cut,but no one could make this boring and stupid mess work! This almost makes Halloween part 5 look good!

3 out of 5 stars "Danny...Kill for him." Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers.......2007-05-13

In 1995, Director Joe Chappelle butchered Daniel Farrands script by putting his artistic vision onto it. This is the second weakest entry in the series, but it is miles ahead of the crapfest that was Halloween 5. This entry tried to give Michael a backstory and failed misserably.

Jamie's character has a baby and the thorn cult attempts to put the same evil, the same rage that is in Michael into her baby. She escapes with the baby, but only the baby survives after Michael chases after her. Michael then stalks and kills members of a family that are living in his old house all in attempts to either kill or capture Jamie's baby. So, basically Michael stalks and kills once again.

The backstory which works fine when reading the script doesn't transfer to film well at all. In fact the whole script itself seems it would work much better as a novel than as a movie. The acting isn't extraordinary and it isn't horrendous, but it is above average for a part 6. Marianne Hagen in particular does a fabulous job in the film, seeing that this is her first film.

The film suffers the most from the ending which doesn't play well at all, I haven't met a single person who liked the ending to this film. The ending just leaves you with a bad taste in your mouth and that is in my opinion why this movie failed is that the ending didn't make much sense at all. The over the top effects don't help matters much either because it gets so over the top you stop believing that this could actually happen to a human.

The dvd promotes the Scream trilogy boxset and Halloween H20, but abosolutely nothing about Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers is found in this dvd not even a trailer (a trailer is tagged at the beginning of Halloween: Resurrection before the main menu comes up).

In conclusion, the thing that drags this entry down so much is the crappy direction and the ending. But the ending is awful enough that I can't recommend this movie to anyone, so this one, like the previous entry is reserved for Halloween die-hards only. If you've never seen a Halloween film before stay away from this entry.

5 out of 5 stars Michael myers is back.......2007-03-03

Personally, I love Michael myers. I consider him my boyfriend because I love the films. I was researching about him and I found out that they are remaking a film and it shall be in theatres on august 31, 2007. I am so freaked and I can't wait to see it. they are still using the original mask, but it is all cut up. It is freaking off the bomb!!! The movies are like scary, but its like you are always looking behind you after watching them. i love michael he is like scary, but in the movies it is awesome when he walks like ya know all slow and fast at he same time and creepy. I think it is so freaking cool when he takes off his mask!!! I love him so much he is my favoritist person in the world...

One of the greatest basketball games in NCAA history is immortalized in Glory Road, an engaging sports movie that dramatizes a pivotal milestone in the racial integration of college athletics. While it may not be as rousing as similar movies like Hoosiers or Friday Night Lights, this fact-based drama gains depth and substance from the groundbreaking achievement of Don Haskins (well-played by Josh Lucas), who coached the 1965-66 team from Texas Western University to the NCAA championship, using the first-ever all-black lineup in the championship game and forever changing the rules of college basketball. Texas Western's underdog season is followed from anxious start to glorious finish, as Haskins recruits many of his black star players from the North, including Bobby Joe Hill (Derek Luke) and Willie Cager (Damaine Radcliff), and this typically wholesome Disney film doesn't flinch from the harsh realities of racial tension (including player beatings and vandalized motel rooms) that Texas Western's black players had to struggle against as their victories began to draw national attention. Jon Voight (under heavy makeup) makes a memorable cameo appearance as legendary Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp, whose favored all-white team was no match for Texas Western, and Haskins' unforgettable achievement is celebrated in an end-credits sequence that demonstrates the positive ripple-effect of his color-blind coaching. Glory Road relies a bit too heavily on sports-movie clichés, but its shortcomings are easily overlooked in favor of its greater historical significance. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars A very fine historic sports movie.......2007-03-15

Glory Road is the true story of Texas college basketball coach Dan Haskins.

In 1965, white players dominated college basketball and a predominantly black team was just not even thought of, especially in Klan infested Southern states.

The coach assists his Texas-Western players in breaking down race relation obstacles still grasping the nation and even more brazenly evident in violent Jim Crow South.

Coach Haskins drives all his players, both on the court, and demands more then passing academic grades in the classroom as well.

Classic Soul and R & B music of the mid-1960's era play a key part through out this well made picture.

"The incredible story of the team that changed the game forever / Based on a true story"

5 out of 5 stars A Fitting Tribute to Legendary NCAA Basketball Coach Don Haskins.......2007-02-19

The year was 1966. Then President Lyndon B. Johnson, only one year before, had signed into the law the Civil Rights Act; President Johnson sent more American troops to South Vietnam; the Soviet space craft Venera 3 became the first man-made object to land on another planet; and in March of that year, a monumental event occurred within U.S. collegiate sports thanks to the abilities of the basketball coach Don Haskins. The late 1960's were a tumultuous period in U.S. history due the number of changes that were occurring in society. Most notably, the Civil Rights movement as lead by Martin Luther King, Jr., which lead the U.S. Congress and President Johnson passing the Civil Rights Act and end segregation. Up until that time, southern colleges and universities were highly segregated, especially their sports teams. So, when the little known university named "Texas Western College" in El Paso, Texas hired a new basketball coach to help their ailing team (the Miners), they didn't know what they were getting themselves into as the man they hired, Don Haskins, was more interested in an individual's athletic abilities than the color of his/her skin. As shown in the 2006 film "Glory Road", after Don Haskins (played by Josh Lucas) began to recruit African-American basketball players for the university's basketball team, not everyone was happy; but as the team began to repeatedly win against teams from other universities that were mostly (if not completely) Caucasian, both the university and the residents of El Paso cheered for their mostly African-American team. The team's success under Don Haskins allowed the Texas Western College Miner basketball team to then be included in the prestigious NCAA Basketball Tournament, where it's abilities took them all the way to the final game with the predominantly Caucasian team from the University of Kentucky Wildcats, whose head coach was the legendary Adolph Rupp (played by Jon Voight).

With a brilliantly written screenplay (thanks to the writers Chris Cleveland and Bettina Gilois), great direction (thanks to director James Gartner and superb acting, "Glory Road" is a truly wonderful film and a fitting tribute to the real coach Don Haskins. Other notable characters in the film include the 1966 Texas Western College College basketball players, which included Bobby Joe Hill (Derek Luke), Willie 'Scoops' Cager (Damaine Radcliff), Willie Worsley (Sam Jones III), David Lattin (Schin A.S. Kerr), Jerry Armstrong (Austin Nichols), Orsten Artis (Alphonso McAuley), Nevil Shed (Al Shearer), Harry Flournoy (Mehcad Brooks) and David Palacio (Alejandro D. Hernandez). Other notable characters in the film include Don Haskin's wife Mary Haskins (Emily Deschanel), Harry Flournoy's mother (Elizabeth Omilami) and Jerry Armstrong's father (Graham Timbes). Though the film received no Oscar nominations, it did win the "Best Sports Movie" from the ESPY Awards (Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Awards). My overall rating for the film is 5 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it. Today, at the University of Texas at El Paso (the former Texas Western College), the main basketball sports arena is named the "Don Haskins Center" and can seat 12,000. Thanks to the real Don Haskins, the doors to collegiate sports were opened to everyone regardless of the color of one's skin.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-02-17

This is a GREAT movie to add to your collection. If you have seen Remember the Titans, this movie is as good at that one only the coach in this one is white and this is about basketball instead of football during the time of segregation in the south.

4 out of 5 stars Works Great As A Sports Film.......2007-02-16

There is no doubting that director James Gartner knows how to tweak a story to make it more dramatic. His "Glory Road" attests to that. As others have stated, writers Chris Cleveland and Bettina Gelois loosened up quite a bit with the accuracy of the events that lead up to Texas Western's 1966 showdown with college basketball juggernaut, Kentucky, in order to make the tale even more of an underdog tale than it actually was. Things start out with coach Don Haskins (Josh Lucas) being offered a shot at coaching Division I college ball at Texas Western (eventually UT-El Paso). When he's handed the reins of the basketball team, he learns he must live with his family in the dormitory with the players. He also quickly learns that he has very little funding to go out and recruit legitimate college basketball talent. After a number of rejections, Haskins heads out to recruit black players and eventually attracts seven of them to the west Texas town of El Paso. Things take a dramatic turn as Haskins' team wins game after game. Along the way, they are faced with countless derogatory remarks, they get spit on, they get beat up, receive death threats, etc. Mind you, this doesn't just happen to the black players. The viewer is made well aware of the fact that the white boys playing on the team draw their fair share of racist heat as well. Haskins and his family receive death threats and, in typical college sports movie style, the alumni association threatens to pull its support of the team. When the pressure really turns up, the black players turn on their white teammates, showing that racism doesn't always come from one side of the court. In the end, the players, the NCAA, and, hopefully, all of America comes to realize that skin color doesn't make you what you are, it's what's inside that really matters.

As stated before, the writers took great liberties with this story. In fact, they took so many that I don't really know what did and didn't actually happen. For this reason, I'm forced to take a star away from the rating of this movie. I really must admit that it's nice to see a film in which racial tensions not only affect the black people in the film, but the white people as well.

Overall, the film is quite enjoyable to watch. Jon Voight is nearly unrecognizable as Kentucky legend, Adolph Rupp. He does a wonderful job in a true scene-stealing role. It's been stated by others that Rupp never was the racist that he is portrayed to be in this film. Much like Lane Frost's father in the equally wonderful "8 Seconds," I feel that dramatic license was taken with the character in order to further solidify the "underdog" aspect of the film.

This movie really is a wonder to watch. Great music, wonderful cinematography, and solid direction make for a nice film. It has drama, comedy, and even a little suspense (even though we all know the outcome). I highly recommend it. Others have compared it to "Remember the Titans" and "Coach Carter." I have yet to see either of these films but plan to check them both out soon due to their solid recommendations here. I can say that I've watched two of Disney's other recent sports flicks and recommend them if you enjoy "Glory Road." Those films are "The Rookie" with Dennis Quaid and "Miracle" starring Kurt Russell. I also recommend "8 Seconds" and "Hoosiers." One is the story of rodeo legend, Lane Frost, and the other should need no explanation at all.

"Glory Road" is a wonderful sports film. Look past the historical inaccuracies and you'll find that this is a good family film for anyone eight years or older. Highly recommended.

A sweet and subtle gem of a movie. Newly orphaned Addie (Tatum O'Neal) falls into the care of small-time con artist Moses Pray (Ryan O'Neal, Tatum's real-life father) and turns out to be better at grifting than he is. Set in Depression-era Kansas, Paper Moon is a miracle of unity. The set design and cinematography combine to give both the flavor of documentary photos and the visual quality of movies from the period, and every performance meshes with the overall tone of sincerity, earnest optimism, and creeping desperation. The rapport between Addie and Moses is phenomenal--and being father and daughter doesn't make that a sure thing. Ryan O'Neal gives a truly great performance (perhaps the only one of his career) and Tatum won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress (she's the youngest winner in history). Madeline Kahn was also nominated for her wonderfully funny and sad turn as an exotic dancer named Trixie Delight. Paper Moon has a miraculous combination of outrageous sentimentality and pragmatic cynicism; the result is genuinely touching. One of director Peter Bogdanovich's best films, and kind of a comic companion piece to The Last Picture Show. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Adapted from the novel "Addie Pray" by Joe David Brown, PAPER MOON is set in the Midwest during the Great Depression, and follows the story of Moses Pray (Ryan O'Neal), a happy-go-lucky con artist who travels through the Midwest on a mission to swindle money out of innocent widows. While attending a friend's funeral, Pray is called upon by two elderly ladies to deliver the daughter of the deceased, Addie (Tatum O'Neal), to her aunt in Missouri. Soon learning that the 9-year-old is almost as mischievous and manipulative as he is, Pray and Addie develop a father and daughter routine that increases their credibility as well as their income. Now, the devious duo set out on a series of misadventures involving crooked cops, bootleggers, grieving widows and a Carney dancer named Miss Trixie Delight (Kahn) who adds a little spice to their routine.

5 out of 5 stars Paper Moon.......2007-07-04

Bogdanovich's masterpiece of hilarity, the comic flip-side to his brilliant "The Last Picture Show", made two years prior. .This time around, thanks to Alvin Sargent's Oscar-nominated screenplay, continual laughter accompanies the director's dusty rendering of 1930's America. We are convulsed as, time and again, child prodigy Addie proves herself a superior hustler to the hapless Moses. Kahn is priceless as Trixie Delight, a floozie dumb enough to try to come between this unlikely pair. Tatum became youngest player ever to win an Oscar.

It's great a movie.

Everyone needs to see this movie so they can recall scenes in conversation. Basically, seeing movies like these, keep you in touch with most present day social situations.

4 out of 5 stars Funny and Charming Road Movie.......2007-04-16

I recently watched for the first time Peter Bogdanovich's early gem (how could I miss it?) with the family team, Ryan and Tatum O'Neil, and fell in love with this charming and touching road movie/comedy that takes place during the Great Depression. Tatum gave, perhaps, one of the best performances by a child I've seen for which she received the Academy award as Best Supporting Actress. Her Addie is almost never cute (even though she could be when she wanted to) but her Addie is very smart, very observant, and much better "con artist" than "professional" Moses Pray. It was sad to see how talented Tatum was and how her career went nowhere after this triumph. Madeline Kahn, as Trixie Delight, the seductive lounge singer and P.J. Johnson as Imogene, 15 years old Trixie's maid are delightful.

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC! TATUM AND RYAN ARE PRICELESS IN THE MOVIE!.......2007-04-12

This is the kind of movie that can not be duplicated. It is like lightning in a bottle. Ryan and Tatum O'Neal are pure magic as the "one step ahead of em" con artists, but it is little Tatum O'Neal who completely steals the show! Filmed in beautiful black and white which sets the tone of this depression era comedy. The supporting cast in excellent too, so the film never drags. The DVD transfer is great and some interesting extras.

4 out of 5 stars One or the Other.......2007-03-09

This is that rare case of a book (ADDIE PRAY) and this film, based on the book being equally good. That said, if you've read the book, avoid the film and vice versa. I had read the book and had a vision of what the film should be. What Peter Bogdonovich made didn't match what I wanted. The characters are vastly different with Addie becoming almost the leader. (As with many other reviewers, I agree that Tatum O'Neal deserved to be nominated as a "best" rather than "supporting" actress.) Without a scintilla of sentimentality, the film still has enormous warmth, charm and even grace. Unusual in a movie that is essentially about two con artists. (I thought of Borsalino.) So see it, buy it or buy it and read it but not both. Either way it's a treat.

Product Description

Once in a great while a movie comes along that truly grips and uplifts its audiences. Such a movie is An Officer And A Gentleman, a timeless tale of romance, friendship and growth. Loner Zack Mayo (Richard Gere) enters Officer Candidate School to become a Navy pilot and in thirteen tortuous weeks he learns the importance of discipline, love and friendship. Louis Gossett, Jr. won an Academy Award* for his brilliant portrayal of the tough drill instructor who teaches Zack that no man can make it alone. And while Gossett tries to warn the young officer about the local girls who will do anything to catch themselves pilot husbands, Zack eventually learns to love one (Debra Winger) while his fellow candidate, a memorable character portrayed by David Keith, struggles with a very different fate. An Officer And A Gentleman is a rich and satisfying story with moving performances that will stay with you long after the film has ended.

4 out of 5 stars Romantic........2007-06-23

Although Officer and a Gentleman is riddled with cliches and predictability, it is also one of the most romantic movies of it's time.

Paula, a small town factory worker, meets and falls in love with Zach, an Navy officer candidate. She helps him through basic training, while they both overcome past and present tragedies. Once training is over, what will come of their short-term romance?

Oh, I definitely CANNOT resist a young Richard Gere in uniform. Believe me. I had to wipe the drool off of my chin. :-)

4 out of 5 stars Girl Gets What Girl Wants.......2007-06-12

This is just a simple old-fashioned love story, 1992-style. Lower-class loner guy joins Navy, gets into OCS to be a pilot and, along the way, meets a homie who wants a sailor to take her away from her factory job. A fling turns into the real thing, no matter how hard he tries to deny his feelings for her and, in the end, rescues the factory princess and drives away with her.

A true chick flick.

2 out of 5 stars What is all the hype about?.......2007-06-08

The movie's plot was thin and cliche, the lines were borderline cheesy, and the acting was nothing special. Despite all the nudity, the movie has no edge and when I try to think about a favorite scene, my mind goes blank. Save for the final scene, where is the romance? I simply don't understand why this movie is so highly rated, but perhaps it is because for its time, it might have been a masterpiece. Nevertheless, if a movie cannot transcend time, it isn't a success.

5 out of 5 stars A Formulaic Film Done To Perfection--This "Officer" Still Packs An Emotional Wallop.......2007-05-14

While no one would ever accuse me of being a romantic, I'll still maintain that "An Officer and a Gentleman" is one of the most affecting films within that genre. Even after 25 years, the film holds up and transcends its flaws to be a powerful and satisfying emotional journey. The film is riddled with cliche'd and oft-used premises and the ending is overly sentimental (when other films have attempted the same thing, I've absolutely cringed)--but none of that matters. With remarkable and raw performances, "Officer" taps into a primal nerve and makes even the most familiar movie formulas seem fresh and vital. I'll make no apologies--I think "An Officer and a Gentleman" is one terrific film!

Richard Gere stars as Zach Mayo--a charming, rebellious, and somewhat amoral badboy. Improbably entering the Naval Academy in an attempt to become a pilot, he immediately clashes with Louis Gossett, Jr. as his supervisor. Learning about teamwork and friendship, his life is further complicated by a local girl (Debra Winger) looking to latch onto a promising future. The film alternates between Gere's progress at the Academy and his burgeoning romance with Winger--but it seems unlikely that either are a good fit. It's a classic story of reform, of overcoming adversity, of making the right choices to become a better person. But what might be mawkish and predictable comes alive with tremendously real performances!

While Gossett won an Oscar as the imperious drill sergeant, and Winger was nominated--the film, in many ways, belongs to Richard Gere. Cunningly believable as the selfish antihero, his evolution throughout the film is remarkably genuine. With much energy and bravado, his performance should have garnered him a Best Actor nomination. In one of the film's most powerful moments, as he proclaims to Gossett that he has "nowhere else to go," his emotion is so raw and all encompassing that I've never forgotten that scene. Gere commands the film so fully, it's interesting to compare it to the more subdued work of his later career. I'd also single out Lisa Blount as Winger's best friend. Cast in a somewhat villainous light, Blount expertly conveys the desperation and ambition of a woman doing whatever is necessary to improve her circumstances in life.

The notoriously difficult (real life) relationship between Winger and Gere on this film proves once again that off-screen antics have little to do with on-screen magic. Channeling their hatred for one another, their romantic and sexual liaisons have a realistic power and aggression that is rare even today. Fierce and independent, these two literally crash together in unexpected--but believable--ways. Old fashioned, yet surprisingly modern, "An Officer and a Gentleman" is supremely entertaining. It will tug at your emotions, but it is never overly manipulative as it has earned our investment with its great characterizations! Highly recommended as drama, romance, or even as a character study--revisit "Officer" now that it has a more deserving DVD release. KGHarris, 05/07.

The studio that brought you REMEMBER THE TITANS now delivers another winner with this exciting and inspirational true story of the team that changed college basketball -- and the nation -- forever! Josh Lucas (SWEET HOME ALABAMA) stars as future Hall of Fame coach Don Haskins of tiny Texas Western University, who bucks convention by simply starting the best players he can find: history's first all-African American lineup. In a turbulent time of social and political change, their unlikely success sends shock waves through the sport that follow the underdog Miners all the way to an epic showdown with all-white, #1 ranked Kentucky for the National Championship!

Amazon.com

Though it seems dated now, this film adaptation of William Inge's romantic comedy-drama was considered pretty hot stuff in its day, which was 1956. Directed by Joshua Logan from George Axelrod's script of Inge's Broadway hit, the film stars Marilyn Monroe as the kind of woman who can't understand why she always brings out the worst in men. A singer who has attracted the attention of a young rodeo rider (Don Murray) whom she meets on a bus, she finds herself trapped at a bus stop in the middle of nowhere during a blizzard. The young cowboy, whose intentions are honorable, can't control his temper and can't understand why this experienced woman won't take him seriously--and why she rejects him when he begins acting jealous and possessive. Love takes its lumps but comes out slugging in the end, with Marilyn at her vulnerable, jaded best. --Marshall Fine

Description

A young and innocent cowboy discovers the girl of his dreams (Marilyn Monroe) and decides to make her his wife. She is more than reluctant to accept his proposal and he forces her to board a bus headed for Montana. The road is blocked and the journey is interrupted by an overnight stay at Grace's Diner, where her plight is soon revealed to all. Realizing his brute approach will never win her heart, he apologizes and kisses her goodbye, only to discover she really has grown to love him. Acclaimed by many as Marilyn Monroe's first serious acting performance. BUS STOP displays a mixture of humor and pain.

2 out of 5 stars Will the Real Marilyn Please Stand Up?.......2007-05-26

Everytime I watch a Marilyn Monroe movie I think "maybe this one will be different," but time and time again she is cast in the same role of the befuddled blonde that the studios molded for her. A time or two, such as in How to Marry a Millionaire, Marilyn seemed to strike gold with her penchant for humor, but those moments are rare, and you won't find them in this film.

Cherie spends the entire movie fretting over her lot in life with a high-pitched whine, and her cowboy lover hollars and brawls until you want to knock them both over the head.

The supporting cast isn't too exciting either, and costume design is stingy. Marilyn goes back and forth between a fishnet horror and a leather skirt throughout the entire movie.

The only parts of the movie I really enjoyed were the rodeo footage and the scene where Beau finally gets the tar beat out of him by a fellow traveler.

3 out of 5 stars Oddly entertaining and touching.......2007-05-03

Bus Stop was an oddly entertaining and touching film. At first glance, the picture appears relatively dumb and unrealistic, and too be honest, the acting was a bit canned (even for Marilyn), but upon closer examination, all of those elements end up having a touch of genius. You begin to realize that the acting was supposed to be that way (Marilyn's bad singing and overly dramatic acting and Don Murray's over the top exuberance), and that they are done very well. Don't forget that this is really a stage production. What strikes me most is the love story that develops in the end and it is very touching, given the metamorphosis that the cowboy goes through during the picture. Also, Marilyn's willingness to downgrade her looks (from Blonde bombshell to a hillbilly lounge-singer) and deliberately sing poorly in the only song of the film, was very brave and ended up working very well. All in all, this is a cute love story to watch with your wife or girlfriend and will leave you with a good feeling in the end.
To contrast this film with the quintessential Marilyn, watch the Seven Year Itch or Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, the latter being her best movie of all time (despite what most people think of Some Like it Hot).

4 out of 5 stars Monroe at her Best.......2007-04-11

Enjoyable film with Monroe at her acting best. I prefer her in more glamorous roles, but appreciate her venture into other areas.

3 out of 5 stars strictly for fans of that buxom blonde.......2007-03-30

william inge is not served well in this adaptation of his stage hit which comes off today as more a situation comedy than a serious work. don murray is just plain silly as the callow cowboy, but of course the only reason anybody would watch this movie nowadays is the presence of marilyn monroe, who shines in what is essentially a supporting role. not bad, just not very good.

If you're a lifetime member of the Jennifer Connelly fan club, you'll be in the passionate minority of people (100% male) who won't care that this 1991 comedy is wallowing in its own oily puddle of lameness. The gorgeous Ms. Connelly is conspicuously put on display in this typically lightweight fluff from writer-producer John Hughes. Frank Whaley does his best to liven up the male-fantasy plot about a semi-nerdy teen who gets a night-watchman job in a variety store, only to find himself locked in overnight with the local knockout (Connelly), who's as rich as she is beautiful. She's also really unhappy with her home life and her bully boyfriend (Dermot Mulroney), so it's Frank's big opportunity to make his move as a sympathetic Romeo. Shallow and contrived, the movie does have its standard moments of John Hughes delicacy, and a cameo by the late John Candy scores bonus points for comedy. Still, it's clear that the movie exists primarily to satisfy adolescent lust--and with Connelly as the object of desire, this otherwise tiresome comedy is a triumph of wish-fulfillment casting. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Every teenager should watch this movie!!.......2007-01-20

I bought this movie for my 17 year old son. When it first came out my husband and I were very young ( all though married already) and even though it's a little corny, to me it's a classic teenage flick. Some parts are so hysterical. I would definately recommend anyone watching it especially teenagers. Great flick !!

3 out of 5 stars A simple fun 83 minutes........2005-12-05

Though this film was released in the early 90's, it has a very 80's feel to it, compliments of John Hughes maybe. It's your typical teen comedy in many ways, just not one of the better ones. The plot was rather weak, though it did make me wonder what I would do stuck in a store overnight. Frank Whaley did a decent job as the town liar/geek/loser. Also the ending was fairly abrupt, and made you wonder what happened to everyone. However, there were two things in the film that were literally outstanding, and both of them were in Jennifer Connelly's tank-top. A must for fans of hers.

4 out of 5 stars Endearingly Silly Comedy With Some Subtle Weight.......2004-11-23

The comedic story of two people locked overnight in a department store, one of them being Jennifer Connelly and the other being, obviously, one of the luckiest guys in the world. They end up encountering some rather incompetent would-be robbers in the process. Underneath the surface there are some kind of dark hints though. Connelly's character is in the store hoping to get caught shoplifting in order to embarrass her rich but scummy father. He's apparantly quite controlling and verbally abusive of her, and it's even implied that it might go far beyond that. The movie never really gets into that possibility beyond a glimmer, because it's chosen to be a fun, endearing romantic fantasy rather than a dark and disturbing drama, but the hint does add an extra dimension.

I think I'd prefer to think that the father is just an immense creep and not something far worse, because while that path could have made a really good drama, I like the really good comedy we got instead. People complain that this isn't serious; but it's a romance and where is it written that romances have to be all somber, stone-faced serious all the time? This romance is chipper, at times endearingly goofy, and wonderful fun, as the two leads (Jennifer and male co-star Frank Whaley) fall in love over the space of an evening. Cynics will scoff at that too, but good grief if you can't believe that something so cool could happen in one night in the movies, what hope do people have of love striking like lightening in real life? Not to mention the pluses of scenes like Jennifer riding the store's coin-opreated mechanical horse (with, happily, the inevitable bounce) or the fact that hearing her giggle is worth buying the movie alone.

Now that Connelly has finally received her rightful acclaim thanks to her recent movies, alot of people have dismissed her earlier stuff. To me, all through her career she's been brilliant. She's shined in the dramas everybody knows about (and a few that have slipped through the cracks, like "Seven Minutes In Heaven", one of her alltime best), she's shined in horror ("Phenomena", aka "Creepers"), she's shined in action/adventure like "The Rocketeer" and she's shined in comedies like "Career Opportunities". This diversity makes her one of moviedom's most valuable performers.

I don't mean to ignore the other performers; they all did fine jobs, but Jennifer was the main draw for me. Besides, I just don't think Whaley or the bumbling robbers would have looked quite as good in that white halter top.

As good as it is, it missed some opportunities to be significantly better, so it's refined to a strong four stars. The script was pretty minimal, and there were missed opportuities for humor, but the cast have made what they have work splendidly, and I fully recommend it. If you like this kind of comedic romantic fantasy fun, I also recommend the 2 "Mannequin" movies, the charming and enchanting "Amelie" and the heartpoundingly sexy "Dream Trap".

3 out of 5 stars I like it for what it could have been............2004-04-18

I absolutely love this film- it's strangely endearing. and the best part is, it is most endearing for what it COULD have been. i think that's why i like watching it so much. the film was made during john hughes' fall from grace (his deal with the devil had to run out sometime) and the early 90's weren't as kind or interested in his fantastic dissections of 80's class conflicts and teenagers know best philosophy. career ops does run a tad thin but there was a great deal of potential. i think whaley's performance was really underrated. if the film had kept some of the scenes shown in the teaser trailer in 1991, he would have been even more likable. the problem is, hughes wants whaley to be a cross between Duckie in 'pretty in pink', ferris bueller and even the anthony michael hall char. in 'weird science'. this amalgamation doesn't do Whaley justice in what was probably a sincere attempt to create an original character of his own. His Jim Dodge is actually really interesting- a cool guy that doesn't trust his own coolness, a lower middle class son who doesn't know how to do well in his parent's eyes and an imaginative, articulate guy who can't quite escape midwest america. if the film would have been less about slapstick (please please please shoot whoever decided bringing in the mulroney brothers for their unecessary subplot that just ruins the film) and more about the dynamic between whaley and connelly, it could have been fantastic. connelly, meanwhile, is also let down by someone- the editor. she is fantastic- beautiful, articulate, classy, and graceful, but appears to be acting in a totally different movie than whaley. the scenes both about and with her father border on the uneasy. i have a feeling that in the original script she was really abused by the bullying dad, perhaps both physically and sexually. i could see it as a possibility with that character. we get a hint of this but then the movie shies away from it completely and we never quite get if its a joke or not (although the scene of connelly in profile with the father outside her door always made me nervous.) i really do like she and whaley together but both hughes and the editors don't seem to know what kind of movie they wanted to make- a slapdash comedy in a newly popular chain store, or a character study of a 'much cooler than his town gives him credit for' guy and the genuinely kind and rich girl who befriends him under strange circumstances. for this matter, we also (b/c of the editing) are never quite sure where connelly's afections lie- in liking jim dodge, or in getting the hell out of town. i just have a soft spot for this film and what it could have been if everyone involved in the production had agreed on what they wanted to make. the ending is atrocious and corny but the rest has promise. this is a great film for aspring filmakers and especially WRITERS to watch both for its good points but mostly for its wrong turns. A great deal can be learned from it.

2 out of 5 stars Yes, It Definitely Has Jennifer Connelly In It.......2003-07-01

I watched this movie for the first time in many years the other day and had to come to this board to see the comments. Just as I thought, a lot of guys oogling Jennifer Connelly. And with very good reason. This movie was the worst in the John Hughes collection, but I can't tell you why because I didn't care a thing about the plot or the lead male character or the robbers or even John Candy, of whom I was a very big fan. I just know that Jennifer Connelly is an absolute doll in this movie, whether it be on roller skates or on a mechanical dime-store horse (especially a mechanical dime-store horse). In fact I think she comes across sexier here than she does in The Hot Spot, where she shows even more of her assets.

Alas, today Jennifer Connelly has gone the way of Calista Flockhart and lost the babyfat and become a serious actress, even carting home an Oscar, but her role in Career Opportunities will be the one remembered by fans years from now.

The Fighting Temptations may not cure the common cold with its FFF (Familiar Feel-Good Formula), but it'll definitely cure what ails you. Here's an unassuming, well-cast comedy drama, filled with forgiving spirit and jubilant gospel music, and its lessons go down as smooth as a mint julep in summertime. Mostly it's just good, harmless fun, beginning when a deceptive corporate ladder-climber (Cuba Gooding Jr.) returns from Manhattan to his southern-fried Georgia hometown to attend the funeral of a beloved aunt, whose will stipulates a reward of $150,000 if he'll direct the local church choir to win a big annual gospel music contest. The outcome is obvious, but veteran comedy director Jonathan Lynn keeps things percolating with casual flair, especially when a lovely lounge singer (Beyoncé Knowles, in a nicely downplayed costarring role) agrees to rejuvenate Gooding's choir, which teams rapping convicts, a boozy barfly (on organ), and bible-thumping prudes. With musical appearances by the O'Jays and the Blind Boys of Alabama, among others, how could this be anything but delightful? --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars "There is *Definitly HUMOR* in the Church".......2007-03-28

I really enjoyed this movie. The casting was excellent. It had some of the Best Gospel and R&B singers. Also alot of Good actors & actresses. Even though you might not be a church goer. This is still a nice family movie. It is *HILARIOUS* with a great story line.

5 out of 5 stars The Fighting Temptations.......2007-02-19

This was one of the most moving movies I've ever seen. I watched it over and over. One minute I was up praising God; the next couple of minutes I was in tears from laughter; then I was crying along with the characters. The music on the movie & CD was magnificent. Not only is it a great movie with excellently performed music, It has all kinds of life-lessons in it. Every time I watch it, it seems as if I'm watching it for the first time.

4 out of 5 stars Brother Act 1.......2006-12-10

Okay, I admit: at first this movie seems like yet another clone in a long line of lead-the-choir/save-the-church type movies (eg. "Sister Act" & "Gospel"), it actually turns out to be more like the gospel version of "Catch Me If You Can" ... sort of. Okay, well at least it tries to be different ... sort of. Okay, nevermind. It fits the new cliched prodigal-leads-the-choir-to-glory movie-making formula to a T -- can we leave it at that?

And although Cuba Gooding Jr. doesn't seem exactly comfortable in his comedic role of a con-man-turned-choir-director &, standing next to Beyonce, he looks more like a cradle robber than an eligible bachelor (who did the casting?!), the movie has a lot of funny moments, a lot of great music & a great feel-good message ... sort of. Okay, I know it's the exact same feel-good message that all the other lead-the-choir/save-the-church films have, but what were you expecting -- originality?

It's fun. It feels good. It's musical. And it works. Thank you very much & have a nice day.

4 out of 5 stars A feel good movie!.......2006-10-10

Darrin (Cuba Gooding, Jr.) is hustler living in NYC. His youth was spent on the road accompanying his mother (Faith Evans) who was ostracized from their hometown church. It was found out one Sunday that Darrin's mom was singing R&B with suggestive lyrics. The strict rules of the church were enforced by Paulina who as the antagonist is successful in ridding of Darrin's mom.

Forward many years later, Darrin receives notice of his Aunt's passing. He makes the trek back to his hometown with big town attitude and swagger. He is revered as a hero, but in fact is a failure in sheep's clothing. His trip comes with an opportunity to cash (and save himself from debt) in on his Aunt's will. He is given authority to reconstruct the choir and enter them into a contest. With green on his mind, Darrin seeks out his quest to bring himself out of the red. He finds out more about himself, his family, and his hometown.

Though structurally not sound, the Fighting Temptations does provide funny moments with touching ones as well. Both Gooding and Beyonce Knowles play believable characters with substance. Mike Epps, Steve Harvey, Melba Moore, and Angie Stone round out a nice supporting cast.

Backed up with a joyous and emotional soundtrack, The Fighting Temptations is a good movie centered on the honesty (or dishonesty) of Darrin Hill and the hypocrisy of a small town church. When these negatives are ironed out though, the result is a congregation proud of their choir and proud of one of their own.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and inspiring.......2005-11-19

This movie is definitely NOT BORING. Cuba is offthechain hilarious when he's directing the choir, like a crazed lunatic breakdancing, pew hopping, chandelier swinging choir director. Beyonce is amazing, the Ojays are great. The performances are musically and visually captivating. "He still loves me" at the end was a perfect finale. And I am usually hard on movies, but this one was really enjoyable. I bought it to replay the musical sequences. Oh and there is a nice little storyline in there too. and dat gurl look-ted good 2...

Obviously the Disney suits gave more than two figs about the legacy from the first Beast film, as they reassembled the former cast and spent some cash on production and tune-smithing for this straight-to-video effort. The events unfold between the time in the first film where Belle bartered herself to the Beast and her later return to the village to save her father. So the Beast's heart still hasn't been melted yet, and he's susceptible to the inky persuasions of Forte (Tim Curry), a malevolent pipe organ (and former music teacher to the prince). Belle is still trying to win over the Beast and decides that bringing Christmas to the castle will be the way to do it. Please control that gag reflex for this does work remarkably well, and though entirely unnecessary and certainly not a complement to the original, it doesn't tarnish its good name. --Keith Simanton

3 out of 5 stars Not-so-Enchanted.......2007-01-29

Doing a "prequel" to the Disney classic was a hard act to follow, and it shows. The animation here is competent but fails to dazzle like the original, the villain is too droll, and there are no memorable songs. Since computer-animated fare have taken over the theatre staples, Disney has turned toward the direct-to-video market, and unfortunately, knocked off some rather lame sequels to their classic animated films.
If you want a great film, then stick to the original "Beauty and the Beast". Better luck next time, guys!

5 out of 5 stars Christmas Treat for Beauty and the Beast Fans - I Truly Believe.......2005-12-25

Those who watched Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" knew they were watching something special. The first Disney film ever to released on Platinum Edition DVD, that movie had a powerful and compelling story with a cast and musical numbers to match.

Set in the Beast's castle, back before the spell was broken, comes "Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas." Mrs. Potts takes readers back to this tale which begins on Christmas Eve. Christmas is coming and Belle couldn't be more excited. Little Chip is excited to hear the news of Christmas too, but when Belle starts planning a celebration, she's stopped in her tracks. It seems "the Master," Beast, has forbidden Christmas
