This Norwegian comedy (nominated for an Academy Award®) concerns two men being released from a state home. Qurky, funny, touching..........2007-05-15

This little movie was quirky, funny, touching and just a joy to watch. I have lent it to three of my friends and they all loved it. If you love foreign films but sometimes find them too intense, you will love the change of pace in this movie. The two main characters are so well acted, I am surprised this didn't win an Academy Award. I would highly recommend this movie.

The Odd Couple meet Bennie and Joon.......2007-04-22

This is one of those feel-good movies that must be shared with family and friends because we all know people like these two men.

These two men had spent two years together in a mental institution, sleeping in dorm-like rooms. When they are released and housed together in a welfare apartment (A very NICE welfare apartment!) both men continue to share a bedroom because they have never been left alone. They spend their time together talking about how to conquer the outside world.

At first the audience worries about Elling, the older man, the "Mama's Boy" because his life prior to being institutionalized was all about his mother. He didn't dare venture outside; he was quite content spending his time in his apartment and reading his books.

His roommate, a Prince Valliant sort of younger man who seems to have an aversion to showering and keeping clean, has his own issues to deal with. He ventures outside but in the persuit of food. He does very little talking.

So as these two slowly make it outside, we are left wondering who of the two will be the first to make it big, and the surprise is quite ironic. By meeting others around them, these two men realize that they aren't really all that crazy afterall. Everyone around them has issues.

The scenery of the Norwegian countryside, the city shots of Oslo and the overall quick dialogue of these two odd balls make for a wonderful 90 minutes of vicarious travel to a country I've never been. The soundtrack was also quite beautiful.

It helps if you've lived there.......2007-03-21

Norwegian (Scandahovian) humor is in a class all by itself. I suppose it helps if you understand the language.

Mainstreaming into "normal" society comes as quite a shock and an enlightening experience for "Mama's Boy" Elling and his food/woman obsessed buddy Kjell Bjarn.Having spent two years in a Norwegian State Welfare Home,these two innocents are now housing together in a State subsidized apartment with practically no skills with which to cope in "the new world".What transpires is extremely kooky to us, but very illuminating for them.What they find is that the outside world is not quite as sane as they had thought and that they indeed DO manage in the craziest of ways with the most unlikely people.ELLING is a very touching and sensitively written, acted and directed film with a quick-moving screenplay that is well edited to cut out any lag time.The characters are allowed to develop and we with them.WELL WORTH YOUR VIEWING TIME.

Find a bit of yourself in Elling.......2007-01-06

Having received a 2-month netflix subscription for Christmas, I stumbled upon this movie while browsing. I thought it sounded like it had potential, and it exceeded my expectations.

Elling and Kjell Barne are, essentially, 2 nice guys whom don't fit into the categories of "normalcy" which are arbitrarily foisted upon the world. Elling is as meek as it gets. Or is he? He doesn't understand the world, thus he's turned inward. Kjell is more of a displaced anger sort of guy. He doesn't understand the world either, but his inner world is not so rich as Elling's.

I rented this and another movie at the same time. The other did zero for me. Being a 3-hour movie, and having not stirred me into caring by the 2-hour mark, I took it out. In went Elling, and for the next hour-and-a-half I was loving my cinematic experience. Essentially a comedy, this movie is still brimming with heart. I love these characters.

The movie doesn't mock or make fun of these characters. It treats them with all the respect and humanity with which you or I would be afforded onscreen. It draws you into their lives and lets us see them as the people we all are.

Good Feelings!.......2006-08-25

It was lovely to finally have a music DVD that presented great performances, the smooth transition from one great sound to the next sound was seamless. This was one of the best DVD that I have purchased in a long time. This was so good that it was a shame that it is only 55 minutes in length, I would have gladly spent hours with this release. More music DVDs need to be made like this and in so doing it would stop that disappointed feeling that far to many music DVDs leave you with. It is like some meals the presentation is great but after the meal you still have an appetite for more and this DVD did that for me it left me wanting more!

Excellent.......2006-05-05

I caught a few episodes of "Legends of Jazz" before buying this, so I knew I would like it. Some of this has not been shown yet by PBS in my area, so I didn't know if the ones I hadn't caught yet were going to be as good as the earlier ones. Well, it turns out that the remainder of them lived up to my expectations. I really like the Kurt Elling and Al Jarreau version of the classic "Take Five" and the Robert Cray and Keb Mo collaboration on "The 12 Year Old Boy". The only thing I'm disappointed about is that there is no Roy Hargrove on here. Hargrove is my favorite living trumpet player and I really enjoyed his playing on the first episode. Oh well, you can't win 'em all.

Get this if you missed the PBS series.......2006-04-27

I found out about this 2-disk set while watching the "Male Vocalists" episode of the new PBS television series "Legends of Jazz," and after buying it, I find I am really looking forward to seeing all the rest of the actual half-hour TV shows from which these 13 tracks and clips are taken. As for this set, let me say first that the audio and video quality are simply outstanding, among the best I have ever heard, in fact, (which is not surprising considering that the TV series is shot in HDTV and features really outstanding Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound.) Next, as for the performances themselves, they really shine and there is something here for everyone - the set covers everything from latin jazz to be-bop, Brazilian jazz, fusion-type jazz, vocal jazz, and even throws in a bit of the blues, with a great duet by Robert Cray and Keb' Mo'. A really nice mix of artists, older and younger, and a pretty good value for money, considering that you get both a CD and a DVD packaged together in the box. I highly recommend this!

Legends of Jazz - Excellent/A Classic/A Must Have.......2006-04-26

This is a fantastic collection of live performances on both DC and DVD! From the Al Jarreau/Kurt Elling vocal duet version of Brubeck's "Take Five" to David Sanborn and Phil Woods blowing down the house on the classic "Senor Blues", there is not a single bad track in this package. I also loved the solo performances - Chick Corea's mind-blowing display of technique on "Armando's Rhumba" is a particular standout, as is Benny Golson's "Killer Joe" (the track Spielberg used in the Tom Hanks film, "The Terminal".) This would be a good deal just for the audio CD, but the included video versions of the performances on the accompanying DVD are a welcome extra - they're shot beautifully and the Dolby 5.1 Surround really makes you feel as if you are there at the TV taping... For me, though, the best part is that the artist combinations are really well thought-out, and give you the chance to hear some incredible jazz musicians performing together whom you would ordinarily never see on the same stage.

Adam and Eve has an interesting premise with a lot of potential as a thoughtful, adult movie. Disheveled musician and college student Adam (Cameron Douglas, son of Michael Douglas) goes out of his way to meet the beautiful Eve (Emmanuelle Chriqui) on campus. In no time, the two are in love. Everything goes swimmingly except in the bedroom, where Eve asserts her right to remain a virgin until she's ready. Adam--though deferential--takes her requirement personally and demands to know what "ready" means. The pair go on like this for months, with Adam remaining true to his passion for Eve, despite howls of protest from his degenerate housemates (among them Jake Hoffman, son of Dustin Hoffman). Eve takes flak, too, from some of her own roomies, yet for awhile it appears Adam and Eve's story will include other young women inspired by Eve's insistence on respect behind closed doors. Unfortunately, writer-director Jeff Kanew (Revenge of the Nerds) elects not to go down that path and nearly derails the movie with inconsequential gross-out scenes at Adam's house. Flee this film, at all costs.......2007-01-21

Most will watch this film to see virginity lost--after all, it is a National Lampoon title. A few may watch it to see how to keep their virginity until they marry, or perhaps die. Some like me will stumble upon it on late night cable, and find it a nearly perfect cure for insomnia. How could I know any one film could be so bad? In a spirit of genuine concern, I formally warn you.

No plot, no acting, no skin, no comedy, no action. This is not even useful for a Sunday school class on virginity. It is an atrocity and a zero. Rent Animal House or Vacation if you want real National Lampoon material, or anything else you please; just avoid this soap opera.

Very gross. Little else.......2006-04-15

NATIONAL LAMPOON has come out with some great party movies. Unfortunately, this is not one of them. The premise is pretty straightforward: a girl in college does not want to go "all the way" with her b/f because she wants everything to be special. That's fair enough and is also understandable.

IF the movie would have only focused on that and nothing else (and I can live with it being over an hour shorter), then it would have been OK. The reason? Easy. Emmanuelle Chriqui is absolutely STUNNING as Eve. Her beauty fills of the screen; I'd love to see more of her work and hope that she gets better roles in much better movies than this farce.

Unfortunately, too much of the movie is about the subplot of living @ a fraternity house. To be sure, this is a very common motif in NATIONAL LAMPOON movies. The problem is, the fellow frat-boys of Adam are beyond disgusting. Moreover, the movie wants to "push the envelope" of being nasty, relying on shock-value more than doing something because it has any humor value.

Cameron Douglas is a goon; I was a bit surprised to learn that he was the son of Michael Douglas. He certainly does not have any acting ability whatsoever, unlike his father & grandfather. Apparently in this film he is a sort of Ron Jeremy anti-hero type; the dufus guy who ends up with the sizzling hot babe.

This is the bottom line, and I will be as fair as I can be: if you crave bathroom humor and simply can't get enough of it, then by all means buy this DVD. If bathroom humor is your "thing," then this DVD is a dream-come-true.

However, if like me a little bit of that stuff goes a LONG way, then check out other, better NATIONAL LAMPOON movies such as BARELY LEGAL and VAN WILDER. The choice is your's.

After school special everyone........2006-03-30

This movie is sometimes a comedy but mostly it deals with a real relationship and the problems that come into it when Eve wants to stay a virgin. Little bits are thrown in for comedic value and they center around Adam's roomates in college who are all disgusting (I would reccommend not eating while watching these parts, it could ruin your meal). Overall, everyone will see Eve as a total beyotch because she is being totally unfair in the relationship while Adam is a totaly douche. I would not reccommend this movie for it's comedic value, but maybe as an afterschool special? Ha

Look. We rented this "film" because we thought the premise had merit. Finally, something outside the Bud-beer-comercial sameness everything in our culture pushes. Bravo to the film on that. Bravo! It DID tackle the subject with seriousness. At no time did it stray from that intention. OK. Good for you.

GAWD was this BORING! GAWD was this amaturish! Dear Lord in Heaven, please help kids who want to spend a few weekends slapping together a "film" (entirely shot on videotape) with the dialogue, with the plot (so it's not so predictable), with the CAMERAWORK that doesn't look like Uncle Dave got ahold of his camcorder. What's with all the smoke in the rooms? Too much!

A good student film.

National Lampoon will put their name in front of anything now.

Ladies and Gentlemen... like the main character dude in the film, when renting or buying "films", check anything before you take it out for the night... make sure you're clear if it's going to give you a urinary tract infection... or if it's still figuring out how to do this whole filmmaking thing for the first time. I want a new rating. "A" for amature.

Great "Guy" humor.......2006-03-11

Adam and Eve proved that "guy" humor at its funniest, is best served raunchy. I thought Adam's character was believable and well acted, although I doubt Cameron Douglas has had much experience with "blue balls." Eve's character was beautiful, intelligent and evoked my respect. The actress has a great ass and great assets as an actress. I thought the script was sincere, very funny and relevant. Adam and Eve treats a woman's "right to choose" to be a virgin in college (oh my God, imagine that!) with respect and a raunchy dose of humor.

I would have to say this is a really good movie. I especially liked Mishi Schueller. I recommend other people to buy this movie and have the time of their lives watching it.

I LOVE the original movie, ELLING, and have often wondered what is happening with the characters! I wish there was a version of this that would work in America! I am glad to know it exists. I will keep watching for it!
