Kids may enjoy the slapstick of this modern reworking of the old Our Gang comedies, but parents who grew up watching them on TV (or grandparents who saw them at theaters) will wonder why anyone would want to be involved in this pathetic remake. Directed by Penelope Spheeris, the film takes look-alike kids and casts them as Spanky, Alfalfa, Buckwheat, and the rest, minus any sense of what made the old Hal Roach comedies funny. Instead of kids being kids, these are kids doing shtick while recycling such old bits as the He-Man Woman Haters Club, the kids' go-cart race, and Spanky and Alfalfa dressing as girls. Devoid of charm or wit. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars Little Rascals Vol. 1 & 2.......2007-05-09

I think this DVD is wonderful. My 7 yr old niece even loved it. It's timeless. And the little tid bits of trivia given by Leonard Maltin I especially enjoyed. When you have so much to choose from it's sometimes hard to pick just the right mix, but this compilation of shorts is just right.

5 out of 5 stars Dont Miss this one.......2007-02-06

The all time greatest show when I was growing up, never a dull moment

5 out of 5 stars Great fun for the whole family!!!.......2006-11-10

I watched all of these shows as a child. I still enjoy watching them just as much as I did back then. I've never heard my grandkids laugh so much. Great fun for the whole family!!!

1 out of 5 stars boring.......2006-06-26

Not very good selections from the series I watched as a kid. Thr students in my class got bored of them after a few minutes.

5 out of 5 stars Enough on racism-back to RASCALism.......2006-04-23

Okay, we've had the racism discussion (ironic since there is no racial humor in the films in this particular set)-so back to RASCALism and the contents of these films.

Fly My Kite is a nice 1931 entry. Sure, the plot about the gang helping an old lady fight off being eviced by her heartless son in law is hackneyed, but the Gang's personalities keep things entertaining.

"Hook and Ladder" is a pretty funny remake of the 1926 Rascal classic THE FOURTH ALARM and sound adds to the humor hee. The Gang fights a fire and saves the day.

"The First Round Up" is an amusing tale of the gang on a camping trip that goes all wrong. In the words of Scotty Beckett, "They'll Never learn." The last shot of Petey's eyes going buck wild is worth the price of admission!

"Teacher's Beau" (Stymie's Next-to-last film) establishes the Spanky and Alfalfa team that would carry the series to its final years, and they do quite well as they try to stop their teacher from getting married. Look fast for a young Dorothy Dandridge.

"Reunion in Rhythm" was filmed around the older kids (Mickey Daniels, Mary Kornman, Joe Cobb and Matthew "Stymie" Beard) returning for the Gang's 15th anniversary and they breifly interact with their successors Spanky, Buckwheat, et. al. as the smaller fry do a school play.

But enough of this, just get it and enjoy.

Beginner's Luck is classic fall-down on the floor funny Rascalism. Spanky's mother forces him to enter a talent show and boy-does she get her comeuppance (And how)! Alfalfa makes a hilarious debut and the Five Cabin Kids (a popular Black vocal group of children) jazz things up with their rnedition of "Dinah" (check out the little guy's Louis Armstrong impression)!

5 out of 5 stars Great Fun for Kids of All Ages........2007-06-12

OK, yes, its a great movie for kids, but I think its even better for adults. Like all the great, classic "kids" humor (vintage Disney, Hanna-Barbera, Sponge Bob, etc.), its really targeted for adults, or at least I believe, you have to be an adult to get all of the fantastic humor.

This movie reminded me of my own kids at their funniest. The attitude seemed perfect. For this, I'm not sure who to credit other than Penelope Spheeris, but all of the kids acting in this movie seemed relaxed, fun-loving, and outrageously humorous. Not to take anything away form the "mature" actors - There were some fantasic cameos including Mel Brooks, Reba McEntire, Whoopi Goldberg, Darryl Hanna, George Wendt, and many others.

"If you were my children, I'd punish you."
"If we were your children, we'd punish ourselves."

"What is your bank account number?"
"Seven."
"Seven?"
"Four?"

"Quick! Call 911."
"But I don't know the number."
"Me neither."

When your kids aren't around, take it out, watch it yourself, and have a good laugh.

4 out of 5 stars Little Rascals review.......2007-06-02

I do Family Day Care and the children love this dvd. It has good comedy, especially when a couple of the boys get caught up in a ballet concert. The kids all have wonderful personalities and the antics they get up to, is entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Full of fun!.......2007-05-15

"The Little Rascals" has been my unrivalled favourite movie for the last ten years. I literally know it line by line and still have a good laugh everytime I watch it. It is the ONE movie that everyone in my family agrees on, so now that we are growing up and there's a new generation of kids coming along, I bought the DVD again so that they can be a true part of our family. Before agreeing to marry my fiancé, I had him watch the movie and I watched his response. Now I know that there's still a kid inside of him and the wedding is being planned. I couldn't marry someone who didn't admire Spanky's spunk and Alfalfa's audacity in bringing a GURL (yes, gUrl) into the clubhouse. This is a new classic and a must-have in your DVD collection!

5 out of 5 stars Charming Humor........2007-06-29

From the producer of Laurel & Hardy and Harold Lloyd comedies. Creative, humorous, escapades of children. Each of the childrne have a unique personality. Filmed from 1922 to 1938, various groups of children played in the films; therefore, there is a vast variety in the children and adult actors. The children interviewed in later years said the director made it a game, made it fun, and the fun comes through on film. Creative, brilliant comedy. Great character-acting, because the parts were so well cast. The producer did not put just anyone in a roll. The bully looks like a bully the moment he appears. Many of the kids were not professional actors, but chosen for their charm and unique personality. The scripts were written for their personalities. Filmed on the same studio lot as Laurel and Hardy, so the kids were around comedy greats, and were subtly coached within the game to maximize their comedy. Thus, the kids kept their innocent, kid next door charm, while unconsciously mastering great comedy techniques.

The picture and sound quality are excellent. The same as when these were shown on TV.

Alfalfa really was a hick from the hills, who sometimes sang off-key. Alfalfa and his brother really sang to audition for the producer in real life, as they later appeared in their first episodes, "Beginner's Luck" and "Lucky Corner". Yes, they did exaggerate Alfalfa's off-key singing later on, but it was born of reality.

This set contains 87 of the 220 episodes made. There are a few episodes that did not interest me second time around. This set has the best episodes. There are a few good episodes of the Alfalfa group, that I have seen on TV, but were not included. Somewhere between 5 and 30 good episodes were not included. I hope they offer them in another DVD.

Sounds like the reviewer who received blue DVD's, bought from a seller who kept the original DVD's, and substituted poor copies that the seller made. The reviewer should name the seller. The DVD's that I received were normal, good, DVD's from seller: barbsstuff1122.

1 out of 5 stars DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME OR $$$.......2007-01-09

Bought it & returned it. Horrible production burned onto blue DVDr's discs. Framing is off, looks like some pointed a digital video camera at a TV set. Audio is even worse. Very disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Great set........2006-12-17

These episodes are complete, not edited down. Sometimes they are not politically correct by today's standards. The black kids never have a father around, he is always in prison. Stuff like that.

Still, great entertainment. They are funny. This is a great deal.

5 out of 5 stars Contains the gems in their entirety.......2006-10-10

Great comprehensive collection that thankfully eliminates the majority of saccharin episodes of the post 1938 MGM years. Contrary to what other reveiwers have claimed, I've found the quality and sound to be very good. Certainly better than the quality when these were broadcast on pre-cable televison. Those of you old enough to remember when televisions had DIALS that necessitated the use of vice grips or needle nose pliers to turn when the knob eventually broke off will understand and be quite pleased, i.e. dark shots and the frame edges are clear and visible. Furthermore, if you grew up watching these on television you will be pleased to know that footage that was cut for both time and content has been restored in this collection. Some episodes that may have seemed disjointed in the past now make sense.

5 out of 5 stars A real bargain for clean, honest entertainment.......2006-09-08

The Little Rascals Mega Collection: 88 episodes on 11 DVD discs, is a real bargain for clean, honest entertainment. For about $25.00, you can have over 20 hours of the Little Rascals, with several different casts performing in these classic 1920s and 30s short films.

The term "Little Rascals" was not used when these episodes were filmed. They were called the "Our Gang" comedies, or "Hal Roach presents his rascals." The "Little Rascals" title came from a 1954 television re-airing of these episodes and has stuck to this day over 50 years later.

There are 11 DVDs in this set, each in a plastic sleeve connected with binders to a plastic folder/carrying case.
There are several different casts, with varying combinations of actors on these DVDs. The early 1930s episodes feature Jackie Cooper, Mary Ann Jackson, Bobby Hutchins (Wheezer), Dorothy DeBorba, Allen Hoskins, Jr. (Farina), Norman Chaney (Chubby), and Stymie Beard, in a variety of situations and circumstances. The middle 1930s episodes retain Stymie Beard, Dorothy DeBorba, and add Dickie Moore and George McFarland (Spanky) along with other child actors whose faces - if not their names - will be familiar. The Our Gang episodes from 1936 and after feature George McFarland (Spanky) and Carl Switzer (Alfalfa), Gordon Lee (Porky), William Thomas (Buckwheat), and Darla Hood (Darla).

Episodes are NOT arranged according to chronological order as to when they were made. On any given DVD are back to back episodes of any different cast members in differing situations.
Some viewers might prefer all the episodes of one cast/situation to follow one another in tandem. Perhaps the publishers of this DVD set wanted to present a variety of episodes back to back, not all of one cast.

Also, the same characters appear in different situations: for example, an actor who is a given rascal's father in Episode A, might be a neighbor in Episode B, the truant officer in Episode C, etc. Rascals episodes aren't part of a continuing story, but rather a series of short films not in sequence.

While watching these Rascals episodes, I am amazed at the positive, optimistic, if sometimes silly view of life they present, considering they were filmed during the 1920s and 30s, many of these years being the Great Depression. Yet, there is a positive view, a moral to the story, and in many cases a given rascal who does wrong gets just what is coming to him/her. In some episodes there are no parents or adults to monitor the activities of the 10 year old and younger children central to the given episode: not very realistic, especially for the 1930s. But these are good fun, and recommended to anyone seeking some wholesome entertainment.

Sound quality is as good as can be expected for 70+ year old films, and the picture quality, all black and white, is excellent. The remastering is very good.

I enjoy watching these again and again since obtaining them in June, 2005, and highly recommend them for fans of 1930s films or comedy in general.

5 out of 5 stars Heart Felt Laughter!.......2007-05-26

Little Rascals was an era that will never ever return. When watching these classics gems I get to go back to that era for a little while and remember how simple the world use to be. It feels good to be able to laugh at good clean comedy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-07

This is an all time favorite. We watch this over and over. My kids absolutely loves it. High recommended

5 out of 5 stars Great Entertainment for Children.......2007-03-12

I give this DVD five stars for the volume of laughter coming from young children when they watch it (ages 5-9 seem to appreciate it the most).

On the downside, they don't like the silent film episodes, but I think there are only a couple of them on this DVD. The episodes with sound more than make up for the silent ones.

4 out of 5 stars More Rascalism on DVD!.......2006-04-23

Another excellent collection of Rascalism.

We have in tandem TEACHER'S PET and SCHOOL'S OUT. These two films introduce the Miss Crabtree (June Marlowe as the pretty teacher) cycle. The first one has Jackie Cooper and the gang trying to scare away their teacher's potential sweetheart ("she has a mean teampature"!)-or so they think. SCHOOL'S OUT features the classic history exam-

Miss crabtee-"Buddy O'Donald, what did Paul Revere say on his midnight ride?"

Buddy-"He said WHOA!"

Then we have what amounts to two very ANTI-racist Gang comedies. In THE POOCH (1932), the white Rascals band together to help their Black pal Matthew "Stymie" Beard keep the Dogcatcher from killing his cannine pal Pete. In DOGS IS DOGS (1931), Sherwood and his mena mama won't let Stymie come in to play with Dorothy and Wheezer, but guess who helps to save the day?

SPOOKY HOOKY (1936) has the later generation of Rascals (Spanky, Alfalfa, Buckwheat, and Porky) trying to retrieve a phony note from their teacher. The gang (and janitor Dudley Dickerson) gets scared out of their wits by a skeleton in the dark. Even my nephews, who don't usually take well to black and white films, enjoyed this one.

DOG HEAVEN (1927) is not so hot. Not one of the better silent Our Gangs (which I usually treasure), this is a rather crude entry with the beloved Pete trying to hang himself (rather graphically, I might add) after his master Joe deserts him for a yonug girl. The comedic canine is also shown using his paws to hold up bottles of bootleg liquor to get drunk from in despondency. YUCK! Keep the kiddies away from this one!

Other than that, a typically great collection.

2 out of 5 stars Sound is So Bad Almost Inaudible!.......2005-12-18

Ok now I am afraid to try any other Our Gang DVDs! No one mentions how poor the sound is, so that it it almost impossible to understand what is being said! This made this DVD worthless in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Nice selection of early Our Gang comedies.......2007-06-30

This inexpensive DVD presents the viewer with five great earlier Our Gang comedies.
The prints and transfer are fairly good, especially considering the age of these shorts.
Plenty of laughs and some tears here - "Fly My Kite" is touching, mixing both pathos and comedy.
"The Kid From Borneo" ("Yum, yum, eat 'em up!") is seldom seen anymore, probably due to its insensitive racial portrayals.
But if you judge this as a product of its time, there are plenty of laughs here.

5 out of 5 stars Little Rascals Greatest Hits are the Greatest.......2007-01-10

We got this so our kids could see it. They are 22 and 25 years old. They have never seen Yum Yum eat'em up! We laughed so hard we could have cried. Spanky and his laugh is the greatest. The other shows are great too, but be ordered this especially for Yum Yum. I highly recommend this for all ages.

5 out of 5 stars The Rascals.......2006-08-11

Brings back memories of what REAL comedy is all about. You gotta love the Little Rascals

4 out of 5 stars Affordable Good Stuff.......2004-02-21

Good collection of Rascals shorts. "Shrimps For A day" is the classic tale of Spanky and two midgets (Olive and Dick Brasno) who lead a kiddie revolt against a tyrannical orphanage owner. If seen in childhood, it will stay in your mind forever! "Hi Neighbor" and "Fly My Kite" are great, but easily available elsewhere (they seem to be on almost every Our Gang DVD). "Beginner's Luck" is a howl-fest about Spanky's misadventures at a kiddie talent show. Look for Alfalfa's debut in this one as well as the Five cabin Kids, a talented group of Black children who were quite popular at the time. Check the kiddie imitation of Louis Armstrong!

Then there's "The Kid From Borneo." One of the less "politically correct" Rascal epics, modern Black viewers may not take well to the story of the children's encounter with a Black "jungle savage". Stymie (of all people) is given lines referring to the title character as a "sissy cannibal" and a "gorilla ape." However, it does have moments of real humor and contains some great chase scenes. One has to really "leave your brains at the door" to enjoy this one and remember that the positive racial aspects of the Rascals far outweigh the negative, given the times that they were made. Personally, my reaction to the film veers between cringing and laughter, although I've seen far worse.

That aside, the transfers vary and youmay have to turn up the brightness on your tv to enjoy this set. But overall, a good collection, especially for longtime fans.

5 out of 5 stars Brings Back Memories.......2007-05-26

What can I say? I grew up on the Our Gang follies. Loved them then and love them now. Get it for clean refreshing fun humor!

4 out of 5 stars Another blast from America's past ..........2006-03-08

I grew up watching the old re-runs of the Little Rascals in the 1980s and watching those shows are some of my most vivid childhood memories.

In retrospect, why can't viewers accept the fact that this show featured good, clean innocent childhood fun AND yet also had some racist undertones consistent with the times?

To say this show wasn't groundbreaking and hilarious, is to ignore the facts. But to say that this show, looking back, didn't have some racist undertones is also to ignore the facts.

Look at Amos-N-Andy. A large portion of the Black Community in the 1950s refused to watch this program because of its overtly racist undertones, and yet a lot of those same people will admit today that it's hard NOT to laugh at some of the humor.

You just have to be honest and be real when watching old footage of Hollywood shows like these.

I'll continue to laugh when I watch these episodes, but in adulthood, it's hard not to also think back to what living in the 1920s and '30s was like for my family -- it wasn't always all fun and games (and no doubt, we all know that TV & Hollywood images have proven to be equally empowering & damaging for a number of reasons).

Little Rascals should serve as the ultimate history lesson.

Great writing & great comedy are timeless. This kind of racism, no matter how blatant or hidden,is dated.

These DVDs attest to that.

5 out of 5 stars Has lots of the good stuff!.......2005-11-28

This DVD has a REALLY good selection of Gang/ Rascals comedies, among the best of the bunch!

"Free Wheeling" (1932) Much has been said about the supposed racism of the Gang/Rascals, but this is possibly the most ANTI-racist of all gang films. Dickie Moore's snooty mother overprotects her impaired son and refuses to let him play with Stymie, who she referrs to as "that colored boy" and "that street urchin," but guess who saves the day? Strong stuff for 1932 and good stuff for today.

Mike Fright (1934) is a hoot about the gang's "International Silver String Submarine Band" running amuck at a radio station. LOVE the gag where Tommy Bond sucks a lemon ("they're good for your freckles") while Leonard tries to play the trumpet.

As for "Shiver My Timbers," (1931), Leonard Maltin has not spoken well of this film in his Our Gang book, but I LOVE it! This is where a salty old sailor scares the gang with wild pirate stories. Anyone who has ever had the fun of telling children scary stories will have a soft spot for this pix.

I could go on and on, but just GET IT and enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars would have been 5-stars but loses one star..........2005-11-24

...because the soundtrack for the musical short MIKE FRIGHT is badly out-of-sync throughout. Thus, mouths move a few seconds ahead of what is previously said or heard. In a short such as this where vocals play a prominent part in the narrative I find this highly distracting. How this glaring an error could not be caught and rectified prior to pressing of this disk is beyond me.

5 out of 5 stars Great family comedy at a Great value.......2007-03-31

The Little Rascals in Color is a three DVD box set that consists of the following three DVDs:

Little Rascals: Best of Spanky

Little Rascals: Superstars of Our Gang

The Little Rascals: Best of Our Gang

Each of the three DVDs is excellent, and you can read my reviews on the specific DVD pages. The advantage of this is that you can save quite a bit of money by purchasing this three pack. It costs half of what each DVD would if bought separately.

The Little Rascals/Our Gang shorts are available in the original Black and White and for the first time in Color. The color versions are great, the quality of the whole set is some of the best I've seen, and in a market crowded with sub par releases of the Little Rascals, it is nice to be able to pay a few bucks more and get a nice set with great quality shorts. There's also some great bonus features, some fun shorts, some interviews with the kids after they're grown up, a few old timey news reels and other fun stuff.

There are 15 shorts included:

-Fly My Kite
-A Lad An' A Lamp
-The Kid From Borneo
-Hi Neighbor
-Hide and Shriek
-Our Gang Follies of 1936
-Washee Ironee
-Shrimps For A Day
-Choo-Choo
-Night N' Gales
-School's Out
-Free Wheeling
-For Pete's Sake
-Divot Diggers
-Waldo's Last Stand

Description

DVD #1 On DVD #1 of the Little Rascals Collection is 1923's Dogs of War, in which the Little Rascals meet the one and only Harold Lloyd after a vegetable-throwing war between rival kid gangs leads the rascals to a nearby movie studio. Not only do the Rascals tear up the studios but that loveable gang tears up the laughs.

From the same year comes another silent-era Our Gang comedy- Derby Day, in which the Little Rascals, after watching a real horse race, decide to try it for themselves and stage their own race using tricycles and neighborhood pets.

DVD #2 When Our Gang is forced to put on a play at the local school in Stage Fright, mishaps and shenanigans arise when the rascals destroy not only their lines but the stage. From fireworks tied to a cow's tail to feuding lead actors, Stage Fright is one of the funniest Our Gang short films to date.

In 1924, the Little Rascals starred in The Sundown Limited. This little gem was one of Our Gang's more elaborate films, in which Mickey and Joe, after causing all sorts of mischief on a real train, build their own railroad, the way only Our Gang can.

In The Pirates, Our Gang attempts to set sail on the high seas in a pirate ship built from spare parts. But when the ship sinks on its maiden voyage, the gang accidentally find themselves on a real boat headed for a run-in with a Navy battleship in this comedic gem from 1923.

DVD #3 This disc holds some of the funniest Little Rascal shorts ever made. In Mary Queen of Tots, another from the silent-era Our Gang shorts, little, rich girl Mary loses her $4 to the evil governess, and it's up to the gang to help her get it back.

In The Fourth Alarm, the kids from Our Gang save the day by putting out a small kitchen fire, but when they decide to start their own Fire Department the pressure turns out to be more than they can handle when a four-alarm fire threatens the town.

And from 1930 is School's Out. When Ms. Crabtree's brother comes into town, little Jackie Cooper and the gang, thinking he's come to ask their favorite teacher to get married, try to get rid of him at all costs, in what turns out to be a hilarious turn of events.

DVD #4 When the gang decides to become Bear Shooters, they pack their bags and go camping in the one spot that they shouldn't have. But it's not a bear that causes the problems but criminals, when the Little Rascals stumble across their hideout in this comedy gem from 1930.

The gang is putting on a show with Alfalfa billed as "King of the Crooners." But Alfalfa abandons the stage, saying his crooning days are over, and that opera is his true calling. But after taking a nap and dreaming of a successful future in popular music, he changes his mind and joins the rest of the gang for the closing number in Our Gang Follies of 1938.

In Waldo's Last Stand, the gang decides to help Waldo when his lemonade stand gets into financial trouble. The Little Rascal's approach is to put on a show and sell the lemonade to its customers, but when their only patron is Froggy, who is not only broke but not thirsty, the gang has to come up with idea after idea to make some money.

DVD #5 On DVD #5, see the Little Rascals as you've never seen them before- as adults! Twenty-five years after they tore up the silver screen, Our Gang returns to the small screen for a reunion on the 1950's television program 'You Asked For It.' They're all grown up and they're all here: Farina, Little Johnny, Jackie Condon, Fatty, and the rest of the Our Gang players in the Our Gang Reunion.

Kid Stuff: Inside Hollywood's Child Stars is an affectionate and revealing look at some of the greatest child stars of the large and small screen. We'll hear about some of the dizzying highs and tragic lows of being a kid in Hollywood from former child stars such as Ron Howard ("The Andy Griffith Show"), Roddy McDowall ("How Green Was My Valley"), Margaret O'Brien ("Meet Me In St. Louis"), Tommy "Butch" Bond ("Our Gang"), and Johnny Whitaker ("Family Affair").

3 out of 5 stars Rarely seen silent films!.......2007-04-23

Just a note to everybody:

The Little Rascals / Our Gang made almost 100 films BEFORE SOUND films were in production. The "Spanky & Alfalfa" films you are familiar with are a small sampling of the total output of The Little Rascals. Unfortunately, that is mostly what was shown on television, so that is what most fans want.

If you are looking for Spanky & Alfalfe, I steer you to these Hallmark DVDs:

The Little Rascals, Vols. 1-2 [DVD]

Little Rascals Vols. 3-4

The Little Rascals Collector's Edition III

If you are looking for RARELY seen early Little Rascals / Our Gang silent films, then get this collection. Until LAUGHSMITH gets their restored 32 title "Our Gang, Before The Little Rascals Learned To Talk" released, this is the largest collection of silent Our Gang shorts available on DVD.

4 out of 5 stars rascal mania.......2006-07-02

a collection of the early years,i laughed and laughed and a bonus with the 25 year re-uniun

2 out of 5 stars Feeble Homage.......2005-11-29

The Little Rascals collection is a set of 5 DVDs with a few shorts on each DVD, the fifth disk with an extra from the 50s and a documentary about child stars. This set was poorly put together, the shorts included are quite random, and buying this set would be a waste of money.

Each disk opens with a montage of some of the characters. First there is Alfalfa, then Buckwheat, Spanky, Darla, Porky, Mickey, Stymie, then Fatty- oh wait, no that is Joe Cobb only they didn't know his real name, then Farina, and last Phil MacMahon- WHO you may be asking? Phil MacMahon, the kid who got bitten by the love bug in a song number in Our Gang Follies of 1938. Still don't know him? Maybe that is because he wasn't a regular cast member and should never have been featured like he was in this collection.

Disk One features the shorts Dogs of War and Derby Day. Dogs of War is a silent film featuring the gang running loose on the Hal Roach lot; it is one of my favorite shorts from the series. However, it seems that they ripped off the Cabin Fever print and added a worse score. Derby Day also seems to be lifted from the Cabin Fever series. It is a silent film about the gang visiting the horse races. The films themselves are very good.

Disk Two features a rarer silent film called Stage Fright. It is a film about a show put on about Marc Anthony by the kids in front of their parents. It is a total disaster. Just like in Reunion in Rhythm, one kid wants to go out on stage and recite poetry. The film has been seriously cut; there are no opening credits and the short is much shorter than the usual film length. The print is washed out and new title cards have been inserted. The music is much more childish than normal silent Rascals scores, but it works. There are sound effects too. Sundown Limited is a great short about the gang building their own train. It is a very cute film; Farina is especially funny in it. The train that the kids build would have been the envy of all the children in the neighborhood. The print is washed out and the music sounds just like Grapevine Video's soundtracks. The film titled The Pirates in this set is really called The Buccaneers. It is also a cute film about the kids trying to build their own ship. When it sinks, they find a real one to destroy. This short has also been cut; there is no opener for it either. It is a bad print and has kiddie music attached to it.

Disk Three opens with Mary Queen of Tots. It is a really enjoyable film where Mary receives toys that look like the gang. She dreams they come to life, and when she wakes up, she finds the gang and believes they are her dolls come to life. This print is really bad especially considering there is a better print available on another cheaply made DVD set. It is funny that the music is the same on this set as on that one though. The Fourth Alarm is a film about the kids becoming junior fire fighters. The print on this one is not bad at all. The last film is School's Out, a talkie featuring a different cast. It is a film featuring Miss Crabtree, the new teacher. The picture is good; it seems to be the one from Cabin Fever.

Disk Four begins with Bear Shooters. This is a less than great film. The print is great; it is the one from Cabin Fever. Our Gang Follies of 1938 is a great film, very funny, long, and exciting. It features the later talkie cast. Waldo's Last Stand is a film from the later MGM years, a lesser film that seems forced. It was also released in a 5 part Rascals set.

Disk Five is the extra features DVD. It starts out with a segment from the You Asked For It television show. On it, some of the silent gang are reunited. Joe Cobb, Jackie Condon, Farina Hoskins, Johnny Downs, and Mickey Daniels are featured. The documentary called Kid Stuff really doesn't have a whole lot of information about the gang although Jackie Cooper is mentioned and Butch Bond does an interview. Other child stars like Jackie Coogan, Judy Garland, Shirley Temple, Roddy McDowall, and Ron Howard are focused on as well.

The films in this collection are films that have lapsed into the public domain. Many of them have been available cheaply for years. The only reason a fan might want to see this collection, the same reason I bothered, was to see the rarer silent films. However, the rest of the set is trash.

4 out of 5 stars The Little Rascals.......2005-07-11

I have always loved the Little Rascals as child and as an adult.
I introduced my three children to watch and the loved it too, their ages are 8 and 11.

3 out of 5 stars Great collection! For TRUE fans only!.......2005-06-10

The other reviewers for this product have no idea what they are talking about and are not true fans of the OUR GANG series. Just because you haven't seen the characters before, or because they are silent doesn't mean they aren't any good. That's just plain ignorance. If all you care about from the OUR GANG series is Alfalfa and Spanky, then you have much to learn about being a true Little Rascals fan. You might as well stick with the crappy 1994 remake while you're at it.

This collection has some VERY RARE silent classics of the original gang, including the classic baby Farina, who is arguably a much more adorable character than Buckwheat. People don't realize how amazing it is to have these gems restored the way they are in this collection. The collection of films in this DVD are hilarious and fantastic! This is for the TRUE Our Gang fan only. I would give this DVD 5 stars if it weren't for each disc being an hour long and for the unnecessary fifth disc.

Superstars of Our Gang - The Little Rascals scare off their teacher's suitor, take a crazy cab ride and strike a unusual deal with a toy store owner - until Pete the dog destroys his shop!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Little Rascals - Still making this reviewer laugh.......2007-03-31

Watching Little Rascals (Our Gang) reruns are among my earliest TV Memories, and I'm delighted to say that they still hold up to this day. The Rascals had a style all their own, that is missing from childrens programming these days. Watching them now, they engage in antics and mischief that at times, makes all the hubbub about Bart Simpson being rebellious seem tame.

The best thing about collecting Rascal episodes now on DVD is that I can share them with my family, who fortunately happens to like them just as much as I do. The great colorization on these recent releases just makes it even easier, and it's always neat to see the bonus features, which contain things that in some cases, haven't been seen since they were originally aired.

This "Superstars of Our Gang" collection features

School's Out - There's a new teacher in town, but the class she's assigned to teach isn't quite what she expected. It's fun to see the class respond to her questions about history with some modern (for the time) pop culture references.

Free Wheeling - Dickie's sick, and the Rascals know how to fix that: Add in a drinking donkey and a wild monkey into the mix. One of my favorites.

For Pete's Sake - Pete gets dognapped, but gets his revenge on the evildoers and their antique shop, (and even an early Mickey Mouse doll!)

Divot Diggers - Combine Alfalfa, Buckwheat AND Spanky, along with the kids playing a round of golf, and you've got another one of my favorite classic episodes. I enjoyed seeing golf lampooned Rascals style, the uptight golfers are an ideal foil for our boys.

Waldo's Last Stand - As their lemonade stand flounders, the kids start up an entire restaurant complete with a floor show to try to boost sales. As a later episode, it's fun to see how the kids grow up as the show went on.

As you can see, there's a lot to take in from these five shorts. A variety of schemes, mischief and animal action, with a rotating cast of all your favorite Rascals. The bonus materials include:

-Jackie Cooper Go Kart Race - A comedic news report showing Little Rascal Jackie Cooper road racing with the Mark Brothers on a Hollywood backlot.

-Old and New Rascals - The first "Gang" from the movies of the 20's, meets with Spanky and the late 30's iteration. Fun to see how the kids turned out.

-Little Rascals Varieties - Trailer for the gangs full length movie

-Alfalfa on the Roy Rogers Show - A grown up Alfalfa guest stars on the Roy Rogers show.

All the shorts are presented in their original B & W as well as in a great colorization job. The bonus features are all in B & W and provide both entertainment value and a historical context for the shorts. The whole package is an entertaining and affordable one, and I highly recommend it to anyone confused by the myriad of Little Rascals material available on DVD.

4 out of 5 stars 35mm Restored & COLORIZED! But you can still watch them in B&W........2007-02-10

I give this only four stars because all of these have already appeared on DVD, restored from 35mm, so there is little new here.

It seems that kids don't like to watch B&W movies, so lets COLORIZE The Little Rascals/Our Gang! But purists can also watch them in their original B&W, which is good since the colorization looks cartoony & unnatural.

If you don't have the old CABIN FEVER DVDs you may want to build up your Little Rascals collection with these. Hallmark seems to be taking their time releasing their DVDs.

I just could not pass up the extras that are included on these DVDs.

SUPERSTARS OF OUR GANG has
The Jackie Cooper go-cart race with The Marx Brothers,
Our Gang old & new FOX Movietone Newsreel clip from about 1936, probably during the filming of 'Reunion In Rythm'.
"Little Rascals Follies" preview trailer from the 1950's Allied Artists re-issue.
Clip of Alfalfa's appearance on "The Roy Rogers Show".

Oh, yes.. there are the comedy shorts. These are all from 35mm 1950's RE-ISSUE PRINTS, not the same MGM transfers as the Cabin Fever / Hallmark DVDs. But they are 35mm prints and they look very good. There is a variety of title sections representing almost every company that re-issued these shorts in 35mm, including Official Films which I never knew made 35mm prints.

SUPERSTARS OF OUR GANG
"SCHOOL'S OUT" - MGM Our Gang titles minus the roaring lion. This was one of my favorites as a kid, but it has trouble holding up today. Basically the teacher Miss Crabtree would be in jail for what she does.
1) When Joe Cobb says he can't sit down in the car because his father gave him a wipping with the shaving belt, Miss Crabtree just laughs. Today she would have to report this child abuse.
2) Since Joe can not sit down, Miss Crabtree allows him to hang on to the side of the car as she drives to the schoolhouse. What state would allow this today? The police would certainly stop her for this.
3) During school recess, Miss Crabtree leaves the children at the schoolhouse, unsupervised, while she goes into town. Allowing a stranger to enter the schoolhouse and ask the kids about her. Imagine the lawsuite this would bring today. This would be child endangerment and she would be out of a job.
4) There are also the usual black jokes prevelent at this time. Farina talks of how his mom keeps marrying men so much that it has gotten to be a habit.
Times have changed alot since this short was made, and it is most evident in this one. You can enjoy it if you remember that this is not happening now. It took place over 75 years ago when life was a bit more simpler, safer, cars did not travel very fast, and wippings were more standard with families that remembered the ways of 'the old country' they came from.

"FREE WHEELIN'" - Official 'Famous Kids' titles - Stymie runs a TAXI service with Spanky as his #1 rider. They try to help a sick rich kid with a stiff neck, who just seems to be sick of being a shut-in rich kid.

"FOR PETE'S SAKE" - Interstate Television titles (the title card looks like 16mm, but the credits & short are 35mm)- The Gang tries to raise money to buy a little girl a doll. After some comic failures they try trading Pete the Pup to the store owner for the doll.

"DIVOT DIGGERS" - Allied Artists titles - The gang invades a golf course. This timeless tale is as funny today as it was 75 years ago. Possibly the best in this set.

"WALDO'S LAST STAND" (only non-Roach comedy here) - MGM Our Gang titles minus the roaring lion. Made after Hal Roach sold the series to MGM, this is more of a musical comedy with polished acting. Still enjoyable, and an example of how the series turned out.

The shorts are offered in both Colorized & original B&W restored versions, but switching back & forth while playing the short is not possible. The bonus material is B&W only.
