From the what?.......2007-04-07
I like this movie because rather than gimics, it tells an interesting story. Plus the acting is wonderful, the writing very clever and the casting is perfect. It's got everything. Bob Clark directs. I would rank this as one of my favorite movies of all time.
One of the best legal movies of all time.......2006-08-02
This movie stars Judd Nelson as Robin "Stormy" Weathers, an impatient but brillant young attorney looking to climb up the law firm ladder. The movie follows the exploits of Stormy Weathers and has some of the most amusing legal wrangling of all time. The screenplay was written by David E. Kelly of Ally McBeal fame so of course, it is set in Boston. It is a nice balance of comedy and drama.
From the HIp.......2006-07-03
I have been looking for this movie for a long, long time. It was in great condition and arrived when expected. Thank you.
From the Hip.......2006-03-14
Very surprising plot line. I'm not easily surprised being a Sherlock Holmes fan.
Best of Judd Nelson.......2005-03-24
Judd Nelson has made some good movies and some not so good. I count this as one of his best. As an attorney "Stormy Weathers" he can't be beat. He will stretch the limits of courtroon etiquette well past the limit if it will win his case. This is by far one of the best melodramas I have seen. Not often do we see a movie full of comedy and drama at the same time.
The beginning is very light stuff, but midway into the movie we start to see the darkside of humanity. John Hurt turns in a magnificent performance as Judd's client in a murder case. Judd can't decide if his client is innocent or guilty, but once he knows for sure he has to learn new tactics in dealing with the judicial system.
Fans of courtroom movies should enjoy this even if they are not fans of the 80s bratpack. Great directing and excellent cast make this a winner. A nice soundtrack and scenes in Boston don't hurt either. Good quality DVD but no extras.

Mary J - HoB Concert.......2007-03-12
Mary's one of my wife's favorite artist, so I bought this DVD and Live in LA for her. We haven't seen the L.A. one yet, but have seen this one. While I was at work, she checked it out and told me that she looked at it twice, back to back,...it was that good. I've seen about half of it and was impressed. I am a musician and sound engr, so I was very pleased that the band was hard hitting and their live renditions were excellent as was the audio mix. I have started a collection of DVD concerts and glad we have this one for the collection.
Mary J. Blige for Beginners .......2006-03-26
Whoever said here that if you love Mary, you'll love anything she does is 100% right. More than any artist in pop culture today, Mary has a rabidly devoted fan base, but even if you aren't a Mary fan, this DVD is worth a look.
AN INTIMATE EVENING WITH MARY J. BLIGE is the standard concert film. But Mary is not just a regular old artist. She's practically a deity, a way of life for her fans, which makes some of her other concert films hard for non-Mary fanatics to understand the hype.
But because this DVD includes performances by better-known performers like Elton John and Sting, it makes Mary J. Blige more accessible to those who have yet to be converted to Cult of Mary.
Another thing that makes this DVD different from some of her others is that the crowd isn't really made up of Mary fans. Yes, there is a pack of them that the camera points toward at certain parts, but overwhelmingly this is a white audience of Hollywood types. And it begins with testimonials from people like Kelly Osborne, Jessica Simpson, Lil' Kim and model Rachel Hunter who profess their love for Mary and her emotionally charged performances.
And though the crowd is somewhat enthusiastic, you can easily identify the real Mary fans who apparently won tickets to the event because they are concentrated to the side of the stage and many appear to be crying straight through the concert as they lip synch every song, completely mesmerized by Mary as she performs her biggest hits, including, My Life, You Gotta Believe, Not Gon' Cry and No More Drama to name just a few.
Particular highlights of this concert, filmed at Los Angeles's House of Blues during Grammy Week, include the banging song "It's a Wrap" that Blige wrote with producer and ex-choreographer Sean "P Diddy" Combs who can be seen in the crowd dancing to it.
Another great performance you'll see here is during the gorgeous song "Whenever I Say Your Name," Mary's duet with Sting. Though Sting, who wrote the song specifically with Mary in mind, is masterful here, Mary is the real star and the look on Sting's face reveals that he knows he is in the presence of the kind of greatness that transcends his own pop stardom.
For an accurate look at the Mary that so many of her fans have come to love and cherish as a form of therapy (as one of her fans announces at the beginning of the film), tune into two songs: "Children of the Ghetto" (a remake of a Philip Bailey song) and "No Child."
"Children of the Ghetto" is a gut-wrenching ballad that reveals an emotionally vulnerable Mary, literally begging young children to rise above the temptations and depressions of life on the wrong side of the tracks. It begins with Mary trying to reconcile her own life growing up in the ghettos of Yonkers New York. "I ain't afraid to go back. Sometimes we gotta go back to get through," she says as she begins her emotional plea for ghetto kids to "keep your head to the sky."
Similarly, "No Child" reveals a very vulnerable Mary, seeming to accidentally reveal and then apologize for revealing the sexual abuse she received as a child. 'Daddy where were you when they were touching my body?" she cries out to the audience, before saying "I truly feel like butt naked up here and I don't care."
Mary's final track is a duet with ELTON JOHN. Though it begins with Elton banging out the beginning of "Bennie and the Jets" on the keyboard, Mary cuts him off and they actually perform "I Guess That's Why They call it the Blues." This is probably Mary's weakest performance on this DVD, but Elton John is so protective and so supportive of her that he makes it a spectacular tribute to the greatness of Mary. He's clearly in love with her and sounds like the overly protective big brother of a musical prodigy who even at her worst can sing circles around him.
The BONUS track on AN INTIMATE EVENING WITH MARY J. BLIGE is really of interest to only the most hard core Mary fans, who will worship the chance to see "The Day with Mary" as she coaches her spectacular backup singers and musicians and prepares for this very special concert.

QUEEN MARY.......2006-03-15
MARY MARY, I ENJOYED THIS DVD ALSO. YOU HAVE TO GET IT. SHE GIVES HER ALL WHEN SHE SINGS THE SONGS. I ESPECIALLY LIKE THE WAY SHE TALKS TO HER FANS. I'M A FAN FOR LIFE!!!!!!
SO THIS IS WHY THEY CALL HER THE QUEEN..........2006-01-21
THIS IS ANOTHER GREAT DVD TO ADD TO YOUR MARY J. BLIGE COLLECTION. I ESPECIALLY LIKE THE EXTRA FOOTAGE WHERE YOU GET TO SPEND THE DAY WITH MARY. ITS LIKE SITTING BACK AND WATCHING AN OLD FRIEND OF YOURS DO WHAT SHE DOES BEST.
A Step.......2005-12-27
If you love Mary you will love anything that she does. I enjoy the artist and I feel like she lives her music. This DVD lacked the quality of the "Mary J. Blige - Live in Los Angeles ", but it is a stepping stone for her growth as a performer. Don't get me wrong she still blows most artists out of the water but the DVD has a few mistakes that where notable.
Still a must have for Mary J's fans but novel listeners would enjoy the "Mary J. Blige - Live in Los Angeles" DVD more

Tarentino-esque fun........2006-05-29
Okay, I admit this has a lot of elements similar to Pulp Fiction (quirky, disturbed hitmen, a non-linear ending where a character is brought back to life, incidental scenes of thugs talking about funny random things, etc.), but a lot of it works (when the gay hitman and the Tadanobu Asano character meet in the bathroom, it's borderline genius comedy). Unfortunately, the pieces don't come together in any satisfying way at the end. Check out the very different but much superior Cha no Aji (The Taste of Tea) for a better outing from this director (also featuring Asano).
Oh how this movie rocks!.......2006-05-13
The movie opens as a young worker Toshiko (played wonderfully by Shie Kohinata) is being urged by a coworker to follow his example and finally quit her job at the stale, low-rent hotel managed by Toshiko's uncle Sonezaki. When Toshiko finds out that her uncle has "invested" all the money in her savings into the hotel, she decides that this is the breaking point. Samehada (Tadanobu Asano; Ichi The Killer) has stolen some serious cash from his former yakuza bosses and, after being tracked to a woodland cabin, (where he's sequestered himself with some sexy "hired help") he's forced to flee the scene in little more than his tighty-whiteys to save from being caught. Cut to Toshiko fleeing the hotel life. Who should she come across? Yep, Samehada, sprinting into the winding, mountain road and causing Toshiko to collide with the yakuza cruiser giving chase.
SSM&PHG has wit and style to spare. It also sports one of the most unique gang of characters I have ever witnessed. From the quirky, salary-man type yakuza boss who collects rare soft drink tins, to his spoiled, style conscious, ingrate of a son who uses his nose like a dog, is afraid to get wet and is draped in bullet-proof white leather. A 3-some of hapless yakuza wanna-be hangers-on that have zero cred, to a homosexual assassin hired to retrieve Sonezaki's niece. Add in the remaining cast of ill-mannered yakuza associates and how could you go wrong? I'll answer that; you can't.
O.K., I could see how some may say SSM&PHG might lack the action required for a decent yakuza tale. I can say with complete confidence that you will not be bored watching this movie. The humor alone carries SSM&PHG high above the waterline. Katsuhito Ishii's direction is reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, in regards to the short segments of confined dialogue between small groups of characters. The banter seemingly has little to do with the overall story at the moment, and acts like a reprieve (or maybe more precisely, Ishii's way of character development) from the superficial plot. He also employs well placed, short bursts of time-lapse editing during a hilarious chase scene near the beginning and again later, as the group convenes at Sonezaki's hotel. It's not all humor and jocularity full-time though. Again, like QT's Pulp Fiction, there are moments of introspection from the characters, but the movie never allows itself to get weighed down in the morality of what's happening. It retains it's light-hearted and irreverent feel from start to finish. Shark Skin Man & Peach Hip Girl is quite the hidden gem that manga fans may already be somewhat acquainted with, but something that comedy lovers should track down for sure.
Ichiban!.......2005-05-19
Off the cuff, cool, decadent and funny. It's loads of nutty fun, strange characters and weird scenarios. About destiny and fate, I loved it, a hot film. The music at the beginning is sublime. A couple really high voltage, creative, shoot 'em up scenes, boooyah! Quirky, goofy, something for everyone...
wish i could give it 6 stars........2005-02-25
this movie is amazing. it's fast-paced, it has great action, it's funny, it's bizarre, and the music kicks your booty. if you filmed a gangster anime instead of celanimating it, it would be like this. when i saw it at a film festival 6 years ago, it was described as "a japanse pulp fiction with high fashion". yes indeed.
I fell asleep........ TWICE!!.......2004-08-13
I love japanese film. I really wanted this to be good. Even though I liked the character development and the plot was ok I just couldnt get into this. I actually fell asleep.... twice! The camera work at times can be interesting but some scenes are way too drawn out without really going anywhere. The mood and pace of the film is very monotone and flatline, especially for a film that touts itself as being this grand rollercoaster ride. And in response to another reviewer here, Taranteno does take alot from asian cinema, but asian cinema borrows alot from western culture as well, at this point there is alot of equal give and take. If you want to see an interesting so called "cool" japanese film see Samurai Fiction instead.

In a fast-moving 85 minutes, Public Enemy tears through their extensive repertoire, from first single "Public Enemy #1," to "Do You Wanna Go Our Way???" The raucous concert was filmed in 1999 before a packed house at L.A.'s House of Blues. Chuck D. is in fine form, bouncing around the stage, rapping with conviction, and working the crowd into a frenzy whenever he senses the energy starting to flag. Flavor Flav, oversized clock necklace in place, backs him up on several numbers, raps solo on a few others, and changes headgear throughout the show, from a Vikings helmet to a baseball cap shaped like a slice of cheese (as Chuck has noted, "If Public Enemy is the steak, Flavor Flav is the A-1 sauce"). The lineup is rounded out by rapper-dancer Professor Griff, who had returned to the fold by this time, and DJ Lord, taking over from Terminator X. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

The legends will not leave until the kids are ready to lead!.......2002-03-06
Or something like that, I hope I got the quote right. Anyway, great energetic performance. I cannot believe these guys are in their 40s, they don't act like it! Not only was the live performance great. The extra features had some great history on Public Enemy as well. A must for any Public Enemy fan! It's a shame the content of rap has gone down hill and didn't follow the political path pioneered by Public Enemy. Most of the songs are performed in full. Though, their first hit, "Public Enemy No. 1" is only partially performed, just the first verse. Good thing I can download a full excellent remix version for free here at [Amazon.com] (Public Enemy No. 1 (Tribal Trance Mix) remixed by Dimension Zero in the music downloads section). I hope Public Enemy plans on releasing more DVDs of their older performances. Who has VCRs these days?
Outstanding Performance!!.......2001-10-11
This is truly one of the finest performances that I've seen on DVD! The boys from Strong Island still have a flame that burns within and energy that's unsurpassed. Mind you these guys (Chuck D, Flavor Flav and Prof Griff) are close to forty if not over. They did a great job in performing all their hit records and even at times rapped ole school! My 5.1 Digital Surround Sound system was bumping and blaring as the sound was just clear, concise and incredible. Damn it felt good to sit back and enjoy one of the most knowledgeable, rebellious and legendary rap groups of all time! Power to the People!

Performance from Public Enemy.it's really sad that they no longer get half the attention as many of these Bums out now that are making a Mockery of Rap as we know it.with PE School is always in Session.this is a solid Performance&Great Insight to PE.
Public Enemy Live at the HOB is bananas!.......2001-09-14
...is a well produced, carefully crafted, concert for home entertainment. The performance was bananas as most of you who've had the opportunity to see them live would agree. In other words, it was 100% DunDee. The portion of the DVD I enjoyed the most was contained in the SPECIAL FEATURES section and titled "ARCHITECTS OF RAP." It featured Mista Chuck giving the intelligent purchasers of this DVD a vehicular tour of Strong Island and it's relevance to PE's history. We went through the "VELT," Hempstead ( he showed us Eddie Murphy's childhood home), and 510 South Franklin Street--the bat cave, if you will, for PE in their infancy. That was special. Mista Chuck discussed the Friday Night Throwdown at WBAU and the history behind that. Most of us loyal PE fans know that so I won't mention it here. Plus if you want to hear you can bum rush the door of the store and pick up the DVD or you can tap the mac and order it online. The highlight of the tour was when he stopped and talked about the back of a little known McDonalds where Glen Freidman took that famous photo which would turn out to be on the cover of their first album--Yo! Bum Rush the Show. Chuck also discussed how the group and the members in the group got their names. Interesting piece. Gives you real insight on the group. Simply put, it's a must have for you legions of loyal PE fans.

MASH OUT POSSE.......2003-10-31
I was feeling M.O.P. when most Die-Hard Hip Hop supporters were afraid to...So, if you don't know the "Downtown Swinger Remix" by Premier, or if you didn't know about them in 1994-95 during the "How about Some Hardcore" era, then You're lost!

Customer Reviews:
Possible burned copy.......2005-09-26
I believe that this DVD was a burned copy of the original. The quality of the picture was below expectancy and the box art was visually flawed with incorrect distributor nameing. My husband personally had his hand in the making of this documentary along with the distribution, and he was completely unsatisfied when he was given this copy as a gift.
WU WORLD ORDER.......2004-08-02
This DVD is concert footage of Rza and Kinetic 9 performing with a live band in Germany. The show itself runs about 45 minutes. You can also choose to watch the concert with interview clips of Rza explaining a little about each song before they are performed. There is a part 2 of The MTV diary of Rza and a few other extras mainly focusing on hip-hop in other countries.
