Perhaps the most striking feature of this strikingly different film is the moral ambiguity of all its characters. While contemporary cinema seems mired in simple distinctions between good and evil, Georgy Girl presents an odd assortment of losers and users who live in a world without an absolute ethical center. Lynn Redgrave stars as the homely girl who takes on the role of mother to her beautiful roommate's unwanted baby. With her father's employer trying to take her on as a mistress and her roommate's husband taking her on as an easy lover, Redgrave's Georgy navigates the narrows between prostitution and purity as she tries to hang on to the baby she has grown to love. Worth viewing for the seamless performances and the complex understanding of ethical interaction. --James DiGiovanna

Customer Reviews:
Georgy Girl.......2007-06-27
Distinctive black comedy has Georgy, a free spirit with a self-image problem, surrounded by somewhat pathetic, bizarre characters: Meredith's beauty can't conceal the soul of a witch; Jos is a loveable, overgrown child; and Mason's character seems like a rather lonely, leering fellow, though endowed with real affection for Georgy. Still, the film's ambiguity is intended- and it's a large part of its charm. A fascinating, highly original ride, with terrific performances and a vivid sense of London in the swinging sixties. Catchy title tune by The Seekers.

The DVD arrived sooner than I expected. It was in perfect condition, as advertised. I will definitely order from this seller again
Hey there Georgy Girl or Lynn Girl.......2006-08-21
Georgy Girl is one of those off beat British cultural comedies from 1960's. Georgy is a young girl at ends with her world. She wants to be one of those free spirited youth but just doesn't fit in with the group she wants to be a part of.
Her father is a butler and his boss (James Mason) has his eye on the young frumpy Georgy. She sees the advantage of being good to him but wants the free spirit life. She rooms with the sultry and sexy Meredith (Charlotte Rampling). Meredith lives for the moment but when she gets pregnant, things change.
Joe (Alan Bates), the father, moves in with Meredith and Georgy stays on as the nanny. But Meredith grows tired of being a mother and being tied down to one man and leaves. Georgy stays on and Joe realizes that Georgy is the special girl.
This was Lynn Redgrave and Alan Bates' breakthrough film. While Redgrave would never recapture this success, Bates caught the eye of a number of directors including Ken Russell and John Schlessinger.

a great movie - to enjoy again and again.......2006-02-23
hadn't seen this film in years - except on late night tv - edited, commercials, etc. - really enjoyed it - had forgotten how funny/sad it was.
NOBODY YOU MEET COULD EVER SEE THE LONELINESS THERE...INSIDE YOU, HEY THERE, GEORGY GIRL.......2005-08-18
At the beginning of this film, when the unforgettable theme song (sung by the great group "The Seekers") and we see Lynn Redgrave as Georgy walking down the street, one knows we are in for a hilarious ride. She's just wonderful in the title role. Ably abetted by a wonderful supporting cast the film moves along briskly, thanks to an intelligently paced direction and there are relatively few lulls. However, the DVD transfer is not that good. The video aspect is pale and dull. The audio is fine. There is scene selection and subtitles. The only other extra is a usless preview trailer of other modern movies being released on DVD. That was a waste of money. Given the lack of extras and the "fair" quality of the DVD transfer this DVD is not worth the price of $24.99 to $29.99 that it is going for. The movie itself is great fun but I expected a decent transfer (not a pale one) and for the price I paid for it, we should have been given a commentary by Lynn Redgrave or at the very least, the theatrical trailer of the film. That is why I give the DVD 3 stars.....the movie merits 4 stars.
