In Love Stinks, Seth (French Stewart from TV's 3rd Rock from the Sun), a sitcom writer-producer, meets Chelsea (Bridgette Wilson, Billy Madison) at his best friend's wedding. He's immediately smitten by her blonde babeness; she's attracted to his income and single status. For the next 45 minutes she tries to get him to commit though a combination of skimpy outfits and wild mood swings. When she finally realizes he's not going to, she turns into a vengeful harpy and tries to make his life hell. This might be funny if you believe that women are manipulative, money hungry, marriage-fixated psychotics--but maybe not. The standard of wit is best expressed in the line, "Drop the probe and step away from my ass," declared by Seth as he's about to receive an unrequested colonic in a spa. It's always wise to be wary of comedies with a comedy writer as the main character, especially when the movie is written and directed by a comedy writer. Writer-director Jeff Franklin previously made two TV movies starring the Olsen Twins; this may have been his attempt to exorcise some relationship gone awry. Love Stinks also features Bill Bellamy (Love Jones, Def Jam's How to Be a Player) and supermodel Tyra Banks. --Bret Fetzer

Not Very Amusing.......2007-05-26
"Love Stinks" is a generally unfunny comedy that will leave you wondering why anyone financed something that promised so little and delivered about what you would have expected from a simple-minded script and an unimpressive cast.
Fans of French Stewart ("3rd Rock From the Sun") will at least be entertained by his many one-liners. Unfortunately they are the only elements that work in this ill-advised movie. Like a lot of this mid-budget stuff, "Love Stinks" places its characters in ultra upscale surroundings and shows them living posh life styles; trying to fool viewers into believing it is a high-end production. But few moviegoers come from the richest portion of the 20-something demographic. Those living a less than swank lifestyle found viewer identification difficult; so the movie was quickly pulled from its theatrical distribution.
Almost everyone else will have difficulty connecting with the film, which is basically the story of Seth's (Stewart) efforts to escape the grasp of the beautiful Chelsea, his materialistic and totally controlling interior decorator. Like this is a continuing problem for all of us!
Chelsea is played by former beauty queen Bridgette Wilson ("I Know What You Did Last Summer"). Wilson is a better actress than she is given credit for as people tend to dismiss her because of a non-acting background, and she is well suited to this type of bad girl role. But the script gives her no opportunity to add dimension to this character. At least most of us have seen this sort of mega-manipulative blonde at work. Desperate to marry, Chelsea gets the rich Seth in her sights, pressures him into a quick commitment, moves in and alters his priorities, then makes his life hell when he postpones the marriage. Most of this is told in an extended flashback, necessary for no reason other than to pad the running length so the movie will qualify as a feature.
Of course Wilson and Stewart's acting gets a boost by relative comparison to the barely competent performances of the supporting cast, which includes talent challenged Tyra Banks and Tiffany Amber Thiesen. Steve Hytner (Kenny Bania from "Seinfeld") also appears but adds little to the comic quality of the film.
"Love Stinks" was written and directed by the guy who is blamed for creating "Full House" and "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper".
Ultimately, all you are left with are Stewart's occasional one-liners and Wilson's beauty. These are not enough to carry a whole feature film but are at least something for which to be thankful if you should be forced to actually view the entire film.
Then again, what do I know? I'm only a child.
Painfully Funny.......2007-04-15
The almost uniformly bad reviews of this movie by professional critics contrast sharply with mostly favorable reviews by customers. I suspect that at least some of the professional reviews were disingenuous, because anyone in a serious relationship who gave Love Stinks a public thumbs up would have had some explaining to do at home. The film is rude, abrasive, un-PC, and very very funny.
It is the nature of modern romance that nearly every one of us has been involved with at least one psycho. The world is full of them and they come in both sexes: stalkers, vengeance-seekers, clingers, users, manipulators, and abusers of all types. They often are seductive (which is how they rope you in) and the final break-ups with them can be horrendous. I think this is why so many customers were able to relate to and laugh at this movie. Since the psycho in this case is a woman, it should not surprise that there are some corresponding gender differences in viewer responses (though by no means uniform either way). There is a lot of pain and cruelty in this film, but pain and cruelty, handled properly, are the meat of all humor. This is not as nasty as it sounds; humor is the way we best deal with such things. Love Stinks provides plenty of meat.
FUNNY!!!.......2007-03-09
This is THE movie for anyone who has been burned by "love". French Stewart has some great lines. Not recommended for children, but wonderfully funny for adults.
Entertaining.......2007-03-01
The Amazon editorial review misses the point of this movie: it is not a documentary on men-women relationships but a comedy about a uniquely psychotic woman...this comedy does not imply that women are psychotic anymore than another comedy implies that all young women are clueless, or yet another comedy implies that all lawyers are liars...This is funny precisely because it is a portrayal of irrational, absurd singlemindedness and extreme behavior. There is nothing about this movie to make you think, there are no gratifying messages for the masses, this is not the usual and rather annoying American mix of comedy-drama-action-love story to please everyone: it is unadultered insanity...You won't feel compelled to take out pen and paper to draft a philosophical thesis about women and men at the end of this movie, and in the very unlikely and rather frightening instance that someone gets offended with this movie, it can only be because he or she recognize some personal behavior, in which case he or she might want to seek professional help!...
Psychotic & twisted love story!.......2007-02-18
I think anyone can relate to this film about a failed relationship turned love-hate. Although, sane people probably do not engage in this type of vindictive behavior. We can at least enjoy it for the hysterical revenge factor. Frenchie Stewart and Brigitte Wilson have terrific chemistry. Their pitched battles to deliberately antagonize and annoy each other after their love relationship goes south is delightful. It's reminiscent of "War of the Roses" starring Michael Douglas & Kathleen Turner which was much darker as a drama. This movie is lighter and comedic. Also, the scene where Brigitte dresses up as "Elvis" for a bedroom seduction scene is very funny. I highly recommend this psychotic comedy about love for anyone who has ever thought of seeking revenge against their ex.

Buying the Cow
This generic sex comedy--about a guy who can't decide whether or not to marry his girlfriend because he's still obsessed with a girl he saw in an airport when he was a teenager--really has only one thing to recommend it: Ryan Reynolds (Coming Soon, Van Wilder). Reynolds plays the main character's horndog friend who becomes convinced he's gay, and while much of his material is of dubious taste and quality, Reynolds has a mixture of ironic detachment and actor commitment that makes the most of his role. Everyone else--Jerry O'Connell (as the obsessed guy), Bridgette L. Wilson (as his understandably frustrated girlfriend), Ron Livingston, Bill Bellamy, and Alyssa Milano--have their moments, but the script doesn't offer them much to work with. When it isn't drowning in clichés about men and women, it's trying way too hard to be "over the top." --Bret Fetzer
