Amazon.com
This well-packaged 1983 remake of the French comedy Le Jouet features two legendary actors in an unlikely pairing. Richard Pryor (Live on the Sunset Strip, Stir Crazy) plays a down on his luck writer who is talked into taking a job as a plaything for the spoiled rich kid of billionaire Jackie Gleason (The Hustler), who just can't communicate with his own son. Amidst a constant stream of abuse and slapstick adventures, Pryor manages to bring out the heart in both father and son and bring them closer together, as he fights to retain his own dignity. Director Richard Donner (Superman, Lethal Weapon) concentrates on the outlandish set pieces and wisely leaves the comic timing up to the two old pros, making The Toy an entertaining diversion. --Robert Lane

Amazon.com Essential DVD
There is greatness in film that can be discussed, dissected, and talked about late into the night. Then there is genius that is right in front of our faces--we smile at the spell it puts us into and are refreshed, and nary a word needs to be spoken. This kind of entertainment is what they used to call "movie magic," and there is loads of it in this irresistible computer animation feature. Just a picture of these bright toys reawaken the kid in us. Filmmaker John Lasseter thinks of himself as a storyteller first and an animator second, much like another film innovator, Walt Disney.
The 10th anniversary edition of the landmark film repackages most of the extras found in the original Ultimate Toy Box set plus a few more. Two keen retrospectives are new, one with an assortment of talents including Roy Disney and Peter Jackson chiming in on the film's impact. The other is a roundtable with Lasseter and three of the creators simply talking about the experiences without--thankfully--any cutaways to noisy film clips. There's a load of other extras since the Ultimate Toy Box was one of the first and best DVD sets. Missing (besides the second film, which will be released separately) is the effects- and music-only tracks. Added is a whopping DTS soundtrack along with a remixed Dolby 5.1 track. The DVD has a higher transfer bit rate for a better picture, but only high-end enthusiasts will notice it. Since the film is a digital-to-digital transfer, both versions are eye-popping. A must-have set unless you have the Ultimate Toy Box.
Lasseter's story is universal and magical: what do toys do when they're not played with? Cowboy Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks), Andy's favorite bedroom toy, tries to calm the other toys (some original, some classic) during a wrenching time of year--the birthday party, when newer toys may replace them. Sure enough, Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) is the new toy that takes over the throne. Buzz has a crucial flaw, though--he believes he's the real Buzz Lightyear, not a toy. Lasseter further scores with perfect voice casting, including Don Rickles as Mr. Potato Head and Wallace Shawn as a meek dinosaur. The director-animator won a special Oscar for "the development and inspired application of techniques that have made possible the first feature-length computer-animated film." In other words, the movie is great. --Doug Thomas

Description
Experience a hilarious fantasy about the lives toys lead when they're left alone. Woody (Tom Hanks), an old-fashioned cowboy doll, is Andy's favorite. But when Andy gets Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) for his birthday, the flashy new space hero takes Andy's room by storm! Their rivalry leaves them lost with a toy's worst nightmare -- Sid, the toy-torturing boy next door. Woody and Buzz must work together to escape, realizing along the way that they've got a friend ... in each other! Now, in a magnificent special edition, TOY STORY shines even brighter. With an all-new enhanced picture and a spectacular home theater mix as well as exclusive bonus features, including deleted scenes and a retrospective special with director John Lasseter, this modern classic is one you'll enjoy to infinity and beyond.

Pixar's First and Best To Date!.......2007-06-26
TOY STORY is one of those classic movies that should be around for generations. Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear and Cowboy Woody are two of the most lovable and fully developed animated characters ever created. The movie is hilarious throughout though there are also many poignant moments (like Buzz's "I Will Go Sailing No More" song). Many talented actors contributed their voices most notably Tom Hanks, Tim Allen, Jim Varney, John Ratzenberger and Don Rickles and the movie includes three memorable songs - "You Got a Friend", "Sailing No More" and Strange Things. And like all good stories it has some important themes including the meaning and value of friendship. Nothing scary for the little ones except perhaps some brief scenes of mutated toys and Syd's threatened violence toward Woody. This is a clever movie with heart that everyone should see.
Toy Story.......2007-06-12
A boy named Andy had a cowboy doll named Woody . Andy loved and had a good time with Woody ,until Andy's birthday . Andy's mom decided they were going to move . Andy got many toys even a Buzz Lightyear action figure for his birthday and everything changed . Andy stopped playing with Woody, and all of the posters , wallpaper, and many other things changed too. Everything changed into Buzz Lightyear.
Woody got angry , so he pulled a trick on Buzz . Buzz had to dodge a globe and flying thumbtacks and he had to jump out of the window. All of Andy's other toys blamed Woody. They said he pushed Buzz out of the window.
Andy's mother took Andy, his little sister, and Woody to Pizza Planet. Woody found Buzz in the car. Buzz was very mad, too. They stopped at the gas station. Wood and Buzz tustled out of the car and began to fight. Andy's car drove away and left them there, luckily they hopped into the Pizza Planet truck. They were driven to Pizza Planet where they find Andy, but Buzz has a different idea. Buzz and Woody hop into a crane game. Six, the crazy neighbor wins an alien, Woody, and Buzz in the crane machine and takes them home.
Six gets a big firework in the mail and attaches the rocket to Buzz. Woody and Sid's broken toys help Buzz out. They miss Andy's car but they get into the moving truck. Sid's dog, Scud, takes Buzz away but Woody takes Andy's remote control car and finds Buzz.. They race for the moving truck but the race car runs out of battery, so Buzz lights the firework and Woody and Buzz go flying in the air and land right into Andy's car. Andy finds them and they all live in a new home together as friends.
I love this movie. This has been my favorite movie since I was little. I think it is a very good movie for all ages to enjoy. I love all the adventures of Woody and Buzz.
I recommend this movie for people of all ages and people who love thrilling adventures.
One of my favorite movies.......2007-06-04
and I got it half price on here. What a deal! I actually bought it to watch with my kids, and they love it as much as I do. If you don't have a copy, you're missing out.
All Time Favorite!.......2007-05-16
I first saw this movie at the theatre while I was in college. I never DREAMED I would be watching it with my kids, and it would still be a favorite 12+ years later! This movie is destined to be on the all time classic list. The lessons learned in this movie are great for kids of all ages, while still being enjoyable for adults to watch. My kids can quote whole blocks of dialogue from the movie, love to re-enact scenes, and still ask for toys from this movie. We first had it on VHS, and had to replace it because we literally wore out the tape. Now you would think that we must watch a lot of TV in our house, but we don't!! We have a movie night once a week as a family, and this is one they would watch almost every time if I let them. It's a great movie for the whole family.
One of the best Disney's movies ever!.......2007-03-14
The 3D animation is awesome, in fact it was the first movie using this technology so it made history because of that. The story is very funny but also teaches a lot of good values to kids and adults, like loyalty work team and friendship. the bonus and dvd box is great too.

My son LOVES these movies!.......2007-05-18
My three year old son loves the toy story movies! I was nervous about purchasing Toy Story 2 because he was so obsessed with the first, but he loves the second just as much! Definitely worth buying!!
Toy Story 2.......2007-05-15
Great DVD! My 7-year-old grandsons and I loved it! A "must-have" for anyone who owns Toy Story 1.
Wonderful--- entertaining .......2007-03-18
I bought this movie for my 2 1/2 year old grandson. He loves it. He gets so excited when I put this on he makes believe he's Buzz Lightyear flying through the air. It's so funny I had to tape him watching the movie. I highly recommend Toy Story. It's a very enjoyable movie for adults too.
My Little Boy loves this movie.......2007-03-15
"Cowboy" movie is what we watch often at our house.
one of the best sequels ever made!
Playtime Fun.......2007-03-11
`Toy Story 2' is a more fluid and intricate sequel than the original. Containing more sight gags and a myriad of peril, the toys come back to life for a new adventure. This time Woody (Tom Hanks) is unraveling, literally at the shoulder socket and not just highstrung. In danger of being sold or taken for granted by his boy owner, Andy, Woody, nevertheless, has the selflessness to pull a toy penguin out of the yard sale bin. In the meantime, a greedy toy collector steals him after the mother refuses to make a deal. As you might expect, the other toys sojourn out to rescue him. What makes it all fun is an attempt to find him at a local toy store, and a journey to the toy collector's high rise. Finding new toys like "Stinky Pete, the Prospector" (Kelsey Grammar) and a Cowgirl Jessie (Joan Cusack) add to the colorful fun. Witty and freewheeling, 'Toy Story 2' springs to life. Fun from start to finish, 'Toy Story' only begs one question: Toys coming to life. Why didn't somebody think of it before?

The beauty of this entry in the Baby Einstein catalog is its integration of puppets, toys, and live farm footage to help babies and toddlers make the connection between their plastic play sets and stuffed animals with images of a real farm. As always, the spoken language is minimal, omitting the pesky verbs and adjectives that would confuse the very young. The 30-minute main program is divided into sections: barns and equipment, animals, planting crops, and harvesting. Background music ranges from "Old MacDonald" to Schumann, and DVD extras include a 6-minute puppet show and visual "discovery cards" identifying animals and farm paraphernalia with a single word. My Granddaughter Loves This.......2007-06-27
I purchased this product because my 17 month old granddaughter loves animals. Though a child's attention span is usually short at this age, she is captivated by the varied ways this subject is displayed in this DVD.
Works every time!.......2007-06-09
We use this CD to get our son to play on his tummy. He loves the part where they sing Old McDonald. It works like a charm every time.
Baby MacDonald.......2007-06-04
This is both of my boys favorite Baby Einstein! They love all the animals and the different plants that are grown on the farm. We would still be watching this if the older one hadn't scratched the DVD. This one is HIGHLY recommended by a 2 year old and a 3 year old.
Baby Einstein, Baby MacDonald, Just Divine.......2007-06-03
Baby Einstein is a wonderful line of videos to help aid in your child's development. Get them off to a very good start with these videos, and this special one, Baby MacDonald - a Day on the Farm. Get them well on the way to a successful future now! Don't wait!
My Daughter Loves This Video.......2007-05-17
I don't know if boys like it better like some of the reviews mentioned, but my daughter loves it! She love all animals especially horses and cows. She also loves the puppets. When each animal comes on the screen, we repeat the animal name in english and spanish. She is 17 months old and can already say doggie, horse and cow in both languages. It was a very good buy for us!

Once you settle into the realization that this 1986 John Carpenter (Halloween) film is not going to be one of the director's more masterful works, Big Trouble in Little China just becomes a full-tilt comic blast. Kurt Russell is hilarious as a drawling, would-be John Wayne hero who steps into the middle of a supernatural war in the heart of Chinatown. While kung fu warriors and otherworldly spirits battle over the fate of two women (Kim Cattrall and Suzee Pai), Russell's swaggering idiot manages to knock himself out or underestimate the forces he's dealing with. The whole thing is dopey, but it's supposed to be dopey and Russell's game performance brings an ironic edge. Carpenter directs some nifty spook effects (the sudden arrival of three martial arts demigods from out of nowhere is worth applause), and he also wrote the music. --Tom Keogh

Best. Movie. Ever. Period........2007-06-12
Just listen to the old Porkchop Express, alright? When you want to get the buddies together on a dark and stormy night and have a great time, all you need is some brews, some grub, and a copy of Big Trouble in Little China. This has got to be one of the greatest examples of a hilarious, great fun, buddy comedy-action flick ever devised. You will not be able to stop laughing. Your significant other will consider dumping you because you won't stop quoting it. You will never be able to stop doing the kung fu hand sign the good guys flash at each other during the flick. The greatest characters, most absurd dialogue, this one has it all. Go to the store right now and tell 'em old Jack Burton sent you for a copy. 'Nuff said.
Cheesy but entertaining!!.......2007-05-14
Cheesy but very entertaining. Very 80s. Not Curt's best stuff but very worth while viewing. His best work.............Captin Ron!!!
One of the greatest movies ever made!.......2007-04-11
Funny, action packed, martial arts, magic, monsters, great (but cheesy) dialogue - truly representative of the Golden Age of Movies (aka, the 80's). The first time I saw this flick, I watched it once a day for 30 days. Did I mention that this is one of many of great John Carpenter films?
Get with it, 'cause for this price, you'll be thanking me for your trip through nostalgia!!
Big Trouble in Little China.......2007-03-29
The name is Burton, Jack Burton. Fun, action, adventure. If you have not seen this movie, I highly recommend it. Jack Burton belongs up there with Jack Sparrow, Indiana Jones, and Han Solo.
When the movie came out, I had hoped for the futher adventures of Jack Burton. Maybe someday someone will write them, for now, all we can do is keep a list of favorite Jack Burtonisms "Its all in the reflexes."
May the wings of Liberty never lose a feather!.......2007-01-25
As many have said before: You either get this movie or you don't. Predating mixed-genre TV shows like 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' by a decade, BTILC was an odd duck in 1986. Comedy, buddy action flick, thriller, drama, kung fu fest, fantasy, parody - it's all over the map and all of it is fun.
Just let it do its thing, sit back, and enjoy. The check is in the mail!

Baby Einstein - Numbers Nursery, Just fabulous.......2007-06-03
Baby Einstein is a wonderful line of videos to help aid in your child's development. Get them off to a very good start with these videos, and this special one, Baby Einstein - Numbers Nursery. Get them well on the way to a successful future now! Don't wait!
Great entertainment and learning for my 18 month old.......2007-05-17
I highly recommend any Baby Einstein videos. My daughter loves them all, although I've never been able to watch any of them for any length of time. My daughter has never been a tv watcher, but since introducing her to these videos she has been very focused on what they teach. My daughter has a vocabulary of a 3 year old and also uses more sign language than I know myself because of some of the other (B.E.) videos. I've incorporated these into my preschool readiness program in my daycare. My families are always asking to borrow a disk to take home and it's been a joy being able to share these with others. I would give this product a 10 if I could! Enjoy!
not complex enough and mistake on french track.......2007-01-06
I buy these dvd's mainly to teach my chidlren french since we don't get french tv.
so two points. i agree with other reviewers about the limit of numbers. my sons are two year old twins who can already count to fifteen. Five seems too easy at this point.
as for the French track. get better QA for your dvd's because a poem that states a cow is flying in the sky and then shows a horse is not an acceptable mistake. My children know the difference between a cow puppet and a horse puppet, even with a hat.
What were they thinking?.......2006-10-20
It is clear the producers are not experts in common sense. Why in the world would they use dounuts, cookies and cupcakes as examples in teaching counting? It's hard enough to keep kids away from this junk without glorifying it and showing a kid under two eating a cupcake on screen. That is just stupid. But other than this absurd oversight and irresponsbility, the disk is engaging and interesting for kids.
Better than most of their collection, but not great.......2006-08-31
I got this at a consignment store for about $3, and that's the right price for it. I think this is among the best of the Baby Einstein collection, but thats not saying much. I did notice that this one (unlike many others) was actually designed with the help of a developmental psychologist. Finally! As a result, it has a better structure, good pacing, and makes a better attempt at concept reinforcement than the other BE products. As is unfortunately typical among Baby Einstein, they make mistakes that interfere with the concept development, or add content that is only minimally related to what they are supposedly trying to teach. Buy BE because it has pretty music and pictures, but don't be fooled by BE marketing that your child will learn from them. I do think this one is entertaining but would not get it for a child over 12 months. If you're purchasing something educational for your child, stick with Sesame Street DVDs. The Children's Television Workshop does a far superior job of actually teaching as well as entertaining.

Grandpa's Magical Toys.......2007-03-09
This movie is wonderful for children of any age. They will learn songs, hand games, and also about friendship. They will also learn that you are never to old to have a childlike heart.
..........2007-03-09
very nice dvd, the kids just love it.the music is the key of this dvd.i wish there were more dvds like this one !!it arrived fast and in excellent condition.thank you !!
Definitely Magical.......2007-02-12
We got this tape for our first when she was 3 years old, some years ago. I think she (and her parents) watched it a couple of hundred times! This year, our younger one, also 3, has taken to it, just as her big sister once did (and she too is enjoying watching it all over again).
From an adult point of view, it is a bit hokey at first(I had a hard time keeping a straight face listening to the "Dutch" Girl). But it captivates you over time, and we came to realize that this is a real class-act of a children's video; very much an overlooked classic. Absolutely the best, a must for every DVD shelf.
Trippy as Hell, absolutely weird, mind blowing!!!!.......2007-01-12
I loved these wee sing videos as a kid, but now they're even better. They're the best stimulation ever to watch with friends and trip to!!! Everyone needs these videos, so does every teenager or college kid. Very entertaining, colorful, musical, hilarious....Check it out.
Wee Sing: Grandpa's Magical Toys.......2007-01-10
My daughter is 4 years old and she enjoys watching this dvd. I have to admit I also enjoyed watching it with her. My daughter began to sing the songs to an adult friend of ours and our friend was amazed that my daughter knew the same songs we grew up with. It's a great DVD and it teaches our children songs that are so innocent in nature. I love it. OOOPS! I mean my daughter loves it.

Dan Curtis, the creator and producer of such out-of-the-ordinary TV classics as the willfully offbeat gothic soap opera Dark Shadows and the proto-X-Files series The Night Stalker, remains best known for the Zuni fetish doll that terrorizes Karen Black in Trilogy of Terror. The wild-eyed doll, with its snapping jaws and screeching yells, borders on camp, yet its relentless attacks and single-minded, homicidal drive make it an absolutely terrifying figure in the climactic chapter of this trilogy of short films based on stories by Richard Matheson. In the first story, "Julie," Karen Black plays a mousy college professor blackmailed by an obsessed student, and in "Millicent and Therese" she plays sisters consumed with an intense hatred of one another that comes to a head when their father dies. Both of these films conclude with Twilight Zone-ish twists and are more clever than gripping, kept alive mostly by Black's gleefully theatrical performances. With "Amelia," however, Black delivers an almost solo show, playing against the famous Zuni fetish doll, a wooden statue that comes to life when the a protective chain slips off the figure and releases the evil spirit. Curtis turns her apartment into a claustrophobic cage trapping the increasingly hysterical woman as the unstoppable figure hacks at her legs with a kitchen knife and chomps down on her arms and neck with the relentless intensity of a bulldog. It's still a classic of small-screen horror. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Legendary producer / director Dan Curtis (DARK SHADOWS, THE NIGHT STALKER) teams up with writers Richard Matheson (I AM LEGEND, THE TWILIGHT ZONE) and William F. Nolan (LOGAN'S RUN, BURNT OFFERINGS) to present three tales of horrific suspense in this made-for-television anthology that also showcases the tremendous acting talent of Karen Black (FIVE EASY PIECES, THE DAY OF THE LOCUST), who plays no less than four distinct roles. In "Julie," an aggressive college student seduces and ultimately blackmails his seemingly shy English professor. In "Millicent and Therese," two polar-opposite sisters become increasingly hell-bent on the undoing of one another. And in "Amelia," a woman falls prey to a murderous Zuni fetish doll.

Tour-de-force for Karen Black........2007-06-23
A fondly remembered cult classic televison movie produced in 1975. A must have for fans of good story telling and of course admirers of the excellent Karen Black. The audio commentary is both informative and entertaining and the featurettes with Karen and Richard Matheson are top-knotch. Fantastic print.
Trilogy of Terror is classic stuff.......2007-06-01
I watched this growing up as a kid.Channel 9 and 11 played this late at night. That Fetish doll was a hoot! All three storie were good but the last one was the best.If you want to see more of the dolls check out Attack of the Beast Creatures. This one, there's an entire island full of them.
Fun.......2007-06-01
I remembered this movie from when I was a kid and got such a kick out of watching it again. Didn't scare me the way I remembered, but fun!
Trilogy of Terror.......2007-05-13
I had been waiting for this one to become available on DVD for quite some time. It was well worth the wait! My grown daughter remembers seeing this movie when she was a child, and is delighted to finally own it. Some of my friends had never seen or heard of this movie; but when I shared it with them, they loved it! The kids particularly loved the segment with the doll. Ms. Black delivered 3 excellent performances! The Karen Black commentary and featurette are nice bonuses.
Great TV movie from the 70s.......2007-02-22
The African zulu doll segment is worth buying this DVD for. I remember seeing this TV movie as a kid back in the 70s. There are others TV movies I am looking for: 79 Park Avenue (miniseries), Sweet Hostage with Linda Blair, Wonder Woman with Cathy Lee Crosby.

Description
In the classic tradition of Disney's animated feature films, the first Winnie The Pooh theatrical feature in 23 years weaves magical storytelling, charming characters, and memorable songs into an enchanting tale of adventure and heart. As it happens, the whole gang is busy preparing a suitably gloomy winter home for Eeyore. When everything they do seems to get undone by Tigger's exuberant bouncing, Rabbit suggests Tigger go outside and find other tiggers to bounce with -- a notion Tigger finds ridiculous because after all, he's "the onliest one!" Or is he? And so begins Tigger's amazing journey to find his family. This whimsical and touching film will bounce right into your heart -- and feet.
Customer Reviews:
Good.......2007-05-13
My daughter likes this movie but not as much as the Piglet or Heffalump movies, but definitely worth the money if your child enjoys the Pooh characters.
What's up with Disney?.......2006-07-01
I found this movie very disappointing. It was so full of low-level slapstick violence that it felt more like a warner brother's cartoon than a Winnie the Pooh Movie. While the story was a sweet message, Eeyore's home being smashed by a rock and roo crashing into closets concerned my two year old deeply. What happened to a great storyline without the bells and whistles of violence to move it along? I'll stick to the Blustery Day. Once again, Disney gets a D-.
My Daughter loves it........2005-10-17
My little one loves Pooh's movies and couldnt be happier seeing her dance and jump with them.... awesome.

Love it!.......2007-02-24
Obviously Speed Racer is timeless. Our kids love the DVD. We don't leave home without it.
Love Speed Racer.......2007-02-16
I have all 5 DVDs of Speed Racer. What a nice blast from the past. It's also somewhat refreshing to let my child watch it vs. the endless drone of Dora or Diego. He loves it. We watch all of the DVDs depending on his mood and he even wants to be Speed Racer for Halloween. It's a shame that the Speed Racer "comeback" on the internet seems mindless. Speed Racer was almost like James Bond, fighting bad guys back then. You don't see that nowadays in many cartoons. I was 3 when I first was watching these and I still think they are all awesome. Even more fun to watch now that I'm older and understand what is going on now.
It's too bad they aren't bringing it back, old school style. That would be the way to do it.
VOLUME FOUR IS RUNNING ON FUMES !! .......2006-12-17
Speed Racer volume 4 is a complete disappointment. Why did the studio decide to split the final 16 episodes of speed racer into two volumes?.The entire series only had 52 episodes,so why 5 volumes. The studio has resorted to cheap gimmick's from the start to sell their dvd's and that's just wrong. The first season had rubber tire packaging(neat). The second season had a slip cover with music and blinking headlights(cool). The third season was a dvd in a cheap tin can(very cheap). The fourth season contains only 8 episodes and comes with a 1/64 scale diecast mach 5(big deal).I don't know about the rest of you but i stopped playing with dinky cars a long time ago and would have liked the final 16 episodes on one volume. Why didn't the studio just release the entire series in a limited edition boxed set.Maybe some tv shows need gimmick's to sell, Speed Racer certainly doesn't!.
Skimping on storylines.......2006-08-30
If you enjoy Speed Racer, this is an essential part of the series to have as a die-hard regardless. However, most of the episodes are only one part episodes. They wrap up much too quickly. I say get the other volumes if you like the multi-part episode series. The two-part storylines are needed to make a good plot and development. There is only one two-part series on this DVD. And the collector's car isn't anything special to look at. It's just a neat little bonus to have I guess. If you want a better looking model car, Johnny Lightning brand is the ticket if you can fine one.
Dissapointing.......2006-05-23
Only 8 episodes not in order as the Tv broadcasted, the last one compressed and fast paced.Only the die cast collectible makes the set worth.I hope Lions Gate learn the lesson and the last release of the series can be better.I'll be waiting.

While the 1960 version of The Time Machine remains a science fiction classic, this adaptation of the H.G. Wells novel benefits from a dazzling CGI facelift. Digital wizardry shows us the awesome splendor of eons passing in an eye blink, while Wells's heroic time traveler--played with appealing conviction by Memento's Guy Pearce--is given a stronger motivation for piloting his time machine 800,000 years into the future. Long after New York City has crumbled and the moon shattered by a nuclear accident, Pearce finds a new home with the peacefully primitive Eloi, after confronting the subterranean Morlocks (courtesy of Stan Winson's monster shop) and their evil overlord (Jeremy Irons in wicked, pigmentless makeup). Trading Wells's social commentary for pure adventure, director Simon Wells (the author's great-grandson) maintains the story's legacy of wonder, despite a few hokey embellishments. Catering to a younger audience, this Time Machine is fun without being particularly distinguished--a treat for the eyes, if not the brain. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Great Sci Fi.......2007-04-25
if you like sci fi, and enjoy a large scale presentation (on a big home system), this movie is haunting, sad and powerful. i do not understand the poor reviews by some unless they do not like sentimental and unhappy endings...
Ridiculous film doesn't even make sense.......2007-04-08
This insipid remake takes far too many liberties with the story, butchers its source material, and unsurprisingly ends up being quite a mess. Furthermore, the movie doesn't even really make sense when you think about it. The protagonist this time wants to travel to the past to save his love, and finds he can't alter what happened. He then goes to the future where he CAN alter events. The remake entirely forgets the point that the Eloi are supposed to be human cattle. That they're not kind of entirely destroys the whole point of the book, and the film greatly suffers as a result. The character played by Jeremy Irons was a dumb addition to the story. Ironically, the special effects used to depict the Morlocks were better in the 60s film!
Great Movie.......2007-03-15
I have read Well's book and seen the older movie. That said, I love this movie. Guy Pearce is very convincing in his role.
We see a man in love. When he looses that love, he uses his genius to try and save her. Failing to do that, he embarks on a quest to find out why. When he gets his answer, he realizes he has found a new life, and to leave the past in the past.
I thought the ending, with the past next to the future, was well done.
And Orlando Jones role is entertaining.
Some Good Changes, Some Not.......2007-03-13
H.G. Wells's classic tale of adventure and social commentary gets a new face in this latest film version. A scientist obsessed with his work and always late manages to build a machine capable of moving through time. His first attempts to improve things do not go as planned. He seems able to change details of the past but not the main results so he turns toward the future. He sees the progress of humanity as it builds and moves forward. A catastrophic event involving the moon changes the world drastically. Finally, 800,000 years into the future he stops. There he meets a peaceful and idyllic people. They are both primitive and advanced at the same time. This seems like a beautiful new world. But then the Morlocks rear their heads and the truth of the world is revealed.
Morlocks live underground and come up from time to time to prey on the innocents above. While they do not like things this way they have no way to fight back. The time traveler feels he needs to help these people and rescue those who have been taken. Eventually he is successful to a point and works to make a new life for himself among these people of the future.
This film often seems less like a new adaptation of the novel and more like an adaptation of George Pal's film. There are three main differences. The nuclear catastrophe has been replaced by the Lunar mishap (no Cold War anymore). The Eloi are less child-like. The Morlocks are more like Verne's Selenites from FIRST MEN IN THE MOON. Replacing the original Cold War fears was a good idea but its replacement was silly. I approve of the new Eloi and Morlocks although they are further from Wells's original. In the end the film has some parts that are better and some that are worse. Having now seen the film I am not surprised at its poor performance. It lacks the action and intensity that successful films of this genre usually have. But it is not a bad film, just one that won't particularly appeal to the main body of movie goers.
Time Machine (2001).......2007-03-09
As always, I am very pleased with this product. I started purchasing my DVDs through Amazon last year and this purchase, like so many others, was very satisfactory. The DVD is in mint condition, as promised, and the price couldn't be beat!
