John G. Avildsen not only directed Rocky, he tried remaking it over the years in a dozen different ways. One of them was this popular 1984 drama about a new kid (Ralph Macchio) in town targeted by karate-wielding bullies until he gets a new mentor: the handyman (Pat Morita) from his apartment building, who teaches him self-confidence and fighting skills. The screen partnership of Macchio's motor-mouth character and Morita's reserved father figure works well, and the script allows for the younger man to develop sympathy for the painful memories of his teacher. But the film's real engine, as with Rocky, is the fighting, and there's plenty of that. Elisabeth Shue is on board as the girl the klutzy Macchio dreams of winning. --Tom Keogh

Description

A fatherless teenager faces his moment of truth in The Karate Kid. Daniel (Ralph Macchio) arrives in Los Angeles from the east coast and faces the difficult task of making new friends. However, he becomes the object of bullying by the Cobras, a menacing gang of karate students, when he strikes up a relationship with Ali (Elisabeth Shue), the Cobra leader's ex-girlfriend. Eager to fight back and impress his new girlfriend but afraid to confront the dangerous gang, Daniel asks his handyman Miyagi (Noriyuki 'Pat' Morita), whom he learns is a master of the martial arts, to teach him karate. Miyagi teaches Daniel that karate is a mastery over the self, mind, and body and that fighting is always the last answer to a problem. Under Miyagi's guidance, Daniel develops not only physical skills but also the faith and self-confidence to compete despite tremendous odds as he encounters the fight of his life in the exciting finale to this entertaining film.

This was a big hit moviue and went one to make three sequel all of them except the next karate kids have the original boy from the first movie in them. For the most recent movie made in 1994 they replaced the boy with a seventeen year old girls who's parents are killed in a car crash. This movies has phonimal music. A young kid challanges the rival of his ex girl friend to a match after he plays a slight prank on him for beatening him up earlier in the movie. Can Mr. Miga train this boy into a fighting champion of power and honor to victory. Find out in the thrilling conclusion. This movie should be fine for ages 12 and up due to mild violence for its time and and occasional curse wored thrown in. A word of adivce try to by these together if you can. You can get part III and four together by themselves on one dvd without parts I and part II but I recommend you order then one at at time if you don't decide to get the whole collection at once. The reason why I suggest this is because the cheaptest I saw that they had 3 and four together one dvd with out the first two used is somewere inbetween 39 and 45 dollars if they charge you for shipping. Either get these together with the rest of the collection or buy part III and four on seperate dvds.

My nephew was recently being picked on and we decided to put him and his cousins in Karate classes for self-defense. Soon after, Wal-Mart ran an ad with The Karate Kid DVD in it. Perfect! I loved it as a kid and now the children in the family fell in love with it.
The Karate teacher even uses parts from the movie to make his point about something and the class knows what he means. The movie teaches that Karate is for defense and that it's bad to use it to pick on others. This is definitely a movie worth the purchase.

A film adaptation of Dito Montiel's memoir of the same name, A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints is a compelling, thoughtful movie based on Montiel's childhood growing up in 1980s Queens. A writer and director who understands his limitations, Montiel wisely left the acting to the pros. Shia LaBeouf (Holes) plays him during his adolescence, while Robert Downey Jr. (Good Night, and Good Luck, Wonder Boys) portrays the grown-up Dito. Never mind that there is absolutely no physical resemblance between the two actors; LaBeouf and Downey are so convincing in their roles it doesn't matter. Switching effortlessly from present day (where Dito is a successful author) to the past (where he is a tough little kid trying to figure out if there is life beyond New York), A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints tackles Dito's complicated relationship with his parents (Chazz Palminteri and Dianne Wiest), as well as the friends he left behind. Eric Roberts is magnificent in a small role as one of Dito's tough, childhood buddies. His powerful performance makes viewers remember there was a time when Roberts was better known for his acting skills than for being Julia's big brother. Montiel--a first-time filmmaker--won the Director's Award at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival for his autobiographical movie. Raw, gritty, and honest, Saints) makes a strong impact and leaves the viewer curious as to how the rest of Montiel's life will work out. --Jae-Ha Kim

2 out of 5 stars More like a handbill than a guide..........2007-06-20

Dito, the teenage main character, wants to escape from his neighborhood, which is colorful but depressing and lacking in opportunity. His family and friends don't want him to leave, and exert maximum guilt to try to get him to stay. They basically want him to spend his whole life sitting on the front stoop. The narrative drama is the tension between his desire for escape and the stranglehold of the old neighborhood. And that's the entire plot of the film right there. Worse, due to a flashback sub-plot with Robert Downey, Jr. portraying the older Dito, we know all along that he does escape the neighborhood. So even that bit of dramatic suspense is tossed out from the very opening of the film. Sure, there's some local color mixed in, but it isn't nearly enough to sustain the whole work. And there are some showy cinematic techniques that do nothing to advance the narrative and seem out of place. The characters were underdeveloped and the whole film seems very half-baked.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent story telling..........2007-05-13

Although this film was written and directed by the person it portrayed, it is still a work of genius. The cast, the soundtrack, the cinematography were all perfectly worked into the film. Yes this movie shows us how rough childhood is for some people, but it also shows that hope and the friendships we make will carry us through any burden. Hands down, the best movie I saw or will see this year.

1 out of 5 stars A Guide to recognizing you hooribale Movie.......2007-04-30

This movie sucked if i wanted to be depressed i would of just went shopping, there nothing more depressing than not haveing money to shop with, don't get me wrong this is probably the most derpressing movie i saw. nothing happy end up in this film. Although Shia LeBaouef Did a pretty good job, but other than that the movie's a waste of time.

5 out of 5 stars bring back old school Astoria.......2007-04-18

This movie is great, It's nice to see so much of my childhood in it, I wish Astoria was still like this so all the yuppies, hipsters, & art geeks could get their faces smashed in every day

5 out of 5 stars Trip down memory lane.......2007-04-18

This is a heart-gripping story of a writer going back into his tumultuous childhood in a rough Astoria-Queens neighborhood in the 1980's. When Dito returns home to try to help his ailing, estranged father, it stirs up a mix of memories surrounding friends, bullies, old girlfriends and loyalties. He's forced to face his feelings with his father and an old friend who ended up in prison. He also relives the death of a friend from Scotland who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. I loved the story and the music brought up fond memories from my own childhood.

Description

Sinbad plays wisecracking Secret Service agent Sam Simms, assigned to protect the President's rebellious 14-year-old son Luke (THE MIGHTY DUCKS' Brock Pierce). Simms would much rather be protecting the President, and Luke would prefer to be just a regular kid without a watchdog trailing him everywhere he goes. But a genuine friendship develops between the two when Simms volunteers to teach Luke how to deal with a school bully (HOME IMPROVEMENT'S Zachery Ty Bryan), and to untie his tongue so that he can win over a cute girl in class. But when Luke's mysterious Internet buddy convinces him to ditch his bodyguard in a crowded mall, the fun and games suddenly become a matter of life and death! The votes are in from both audiences and critics -- "Sinbad is hilarious" (KNX Radio/CBS Radio) in this "laugh-a-minute" comedy (Sneak Previews).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Funny Disney Flick.......2006-09-01

Sam Simms (Sinbad) is an unorthodox Secret Service agent. The Secret Service assigns Agent Simms to protect the President's son, Luke Davenport (Brock Pierce of "Might Ducks"), code named Prince. Luke has managed to dispose of several previous Secret Service agents by driving them crazy, including Agent Woods (Timothy Busfield of "Thirtysomething" and "The West Wing").

The movie tries to portray Luke as a child ignored by his famous mother and father and unable to have a normal childhood. Though I empathize with Luke a little, he also generally acts wimpy. However, thirteen-year-old Luke has stirrings of normality as he gains a huge crush on classmate Katie Warren (Erin Williby in her final role) and has a run-in with the class bully. After the run-in with class bully Rob (Zachery Ty Bryan), Luke and Agent Simms begin to bond, and this movie really takes off.

Much of the movie is humorous, as it was intended to be. Most of the humor works, making this movie generally enjoyable. Sinbad steals the show, as you might expect. Sinbad mixes slapstick and one-liners that only occasionally clunk. Sinbad makes Luke Davenport look good and sparks life into the plot.

As with many Disney movies of this type, there are serious undertones. The movie becomes most serious near the end when Luke Davenport runs away from the White House and encounters a life threatening situation. Secret Service agents are in a panic as they try to locate the President's son. Fortunately, Agent Simms, just fired from the Secret Service for aiding Luke in going to a school dance, has a way of finding Luke that only Agent Simms knows about. The end of this movie is nicely plotted and enjoyable to watch.

I enjoyed watching Sinbad in this movie. Sinbad's comedy was generally fun, and he handles himself well. Most of the cast did very well. I would have replaced Luke Davenport with another actor, or would have had him perform with more confidence in school. Luke Davenport ran rings around the Secret Service and yet he was unable to keep from embarrassing himself. The plot was agreeable, with an action ending that provided a nice capstone to the comedy. There is some mild violence that generated a PG rating, but this movie should be suitable for most family members down to about age 7 or 8. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome comedy!.......2005-07-31

Just seeing the name of this great movie brings back a great memory from 1996. At the age of 18, even though I was officially an adult, thanks to being a member of the Fox Kids Club in my area as a kid, I was able to win free tickets to see a prescreening of First Kid because I knew Sinbad's name. My girlfriend on one side and a good friend on the other, we had to travel an hour to get to the theater where the prescreening took place, but if there was ever a movie worth an hour's travel, First Kid is the one! I still remember the loud chorus of laughter, particularly when Sinbad got the bully back with the huge spitwad, and the rest of the movie had no lack of great moments either. First Kid is delightfully funny, but at the same, it has a lot of feel good moments to it, and I truly feel for anyone who hasn't seen it. Great music, great times, great entertainment for all! With First Kid, you just can't go wrong!

5 out of 5 stars A Movie That Will Make You laugh Forever!.......2005-05-08

I think that this movie was very good. Sinbad is a very good actor as well as Brock Pierce. As soon as you see the first five minuites of this movie, youll never want to stop watching it. You can watch it over and over again withought getting bored.

5 out of 5 stars such a great movie.......2005-05-04

Of all the movies Disney has made, this is one of their best. I really like Sinbad (he's so funny) and the music. "Pressure" to me is such a perfect fit for the movie's plot. If only they had extended the "Land of Funk" scene, because that was also pretty good. I think I'll watch it again tonight.

5 out of 5 stars I love this film........2004-04-04

This film rules i would have hated to been luke stuck in his house and not allowed to go out with his friends.I really laughed at the bit where luke is asking the girl to the dance and his carers are in the bush telling him what to say and he copies everythink they say on some bits where he shouldnt.
I looked everywhere for this films so i bought it here and it rules!

2 out of 5 stars Shooting Gallery.......2007-01-20

I thought the movie had poor acting and a terrible plot. What should I have expected with Freddie Prinze Jr. though. I wouldn't recomend this video if you are a pool junkie like I am. I'm still waiting for the next great movie to take over where the "Color of Money" left off. I think it's about time for one.

1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2006-10-15

To make a long movie short, this movie sucks. Don't waste your time. Most pool movies suck. If you want to see a good pool movie watch stickmen. Its a independent film from New Zealand but it is really good.

4 out of 5 stars Breaks like a Mini-Jesus.......2006-10-06

A lot of people give this movie crap and say it gives "pool a bad name". Movies such as the "Hustler", "Color of Money", and "Poolhall Junkies" though good in their own respects have long since given pool and pool players a bad rep as macho, greedy, pigheads who play a great game but are stupid when it comes to other aspects of life. SG has made it no better or worse than the other films have.

Saying that, this is a revenge story set in a poolhall. I'm sure poker players everywhere would be spewing the same mindless battle cry "It gives us a bad name" if this movie took place over a poker table. People fail to see that and are too concerned whether or not this film gives who a bad name.

Cinematography is excellent. Acting is decent. Some nice pool action. Not the greatest pool film ever but certainly not as bad as people would like you to believe.

3 out of 5 stars "If I'm Lyin...I'm Dyin.".......2006-10-02

After watching this I came to the conclusion that I was watching a rip-off "Poolhall Junkies" and a poorly executed one too. Freddi Prinze Jr. as your main character comes off and nothing more then a pretty face who thinks he can shoot some pool. In the final stages of the film, I wanted to cut my ears off because I couldn't stand his "broken nose" accent.

Ving Rhames was waaay below par in this film; all he does is walk around and chew on alligator feet which was quite nasty to me. He actually does nothing in the film, until the climax when he shoots some pool and a gun. Roselyn Sanchez played her role quite well, albeit her history in the story does not need to be actually in there, and finally Callum Keith Rennie does a good performance, but his character was written in what seems to be a hurried way. The whole crew was (if you can imagine the analogy) put into a blender, served up with whipped cream and a cherry on top, when you are expecting something bitter. It didn't blend at all well, the acting between the people.

The visuals within the film are great. The director did a great job for showing such a different forray of shots; the sleazy underworld, the wonderful city shots and the added bonus of Pool-Hall terms being printed and written across angled camera-shots - I liked. Freddie actually shoots some pool here, nice to see that, but it's obvious that the trick shots are done by someone else. I liked the whole switching of the shooting sides that Freddie does near the end though; I thought that was a nice addition.

This film, in it's own right, is a film that went straight-to-DVD/video and quite rightly so. No way would it have performed in the cinemas with the rest of the blockbusters of 2005. I can say that `Shooting Gallery' is one of those films that people rent when they have run out of films to watch.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5 stars .......2006-09-28

This movie had potential although in some ways it is a rip off of "The Hustler" with Paul Newman and thats one of the reasons this movie suffered because Freddie Prince JR sure is not Paul Newman If you have seen The Hustler than maybe you can give this movie a shot ,, I dont know what the other reviewer was talking about with the slang it is understandable I didnt really notice any slang in the movie .. The bright spots of the movie are Ving Rhames, your always going to get a good performance from , he played his part well and Roselyn Sanchez, I have not seen her in any movie previous to this one , Not only is she beatiful but she can actually act this is usually uncommon with beatiful actresses. Really those where the only two reasons I bought this movie cause I am a Ving Rhames fan and I wanted to see Roselyn Sanchez. Overall for about 3 bucks I would say it is possibly worth owning but for the price of renting it you might as well just buy it

--Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Rovcky for adolescent.......2007-05-21

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-05-17

My nephew was recently being picked on and we decided to put him and his cousins in Karate classes for self-defense. Soon after, Wal-Mart ran an ad with The Karate Kid DVD in it. Perfect! I loved it as a kid and now the children in the family fell in love with it.
The Karate teacher even uses parts from the movie to make his point about something and the class knows what he means. The movie teaches that Karate is for defense and that it's bad to use it to pick on others. This is definitely a movie worth the purchase.

4 out of 5 stars great for fans of foreign cinema.......2007-06-29

I initially ordered this film to add to my already 300+ DVD collection.

I had the opportunity to introduce this film to an audience at Morehouse College last semester, where it was warmly received.

The ending was totally unexpected and viewers will certainly converse as to why it ended the way it did! The age-old question of nature vs. nurture will be asked and debated for hours after the last frame...
