You'd expect a cavalcade of cuteness from any pairing of Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant, but Two Weeks Notice admirably avoids the obvious. TWO WEEKS NOTICE is one of my favorite movies. There. I said it. Read on to see why I love this movie.

TWO WEEKS NOTICE is the story of Lucy (Sandra Bullock), a very. . . It's hard to describe her. She aspires to be a great lawyer - and in truth is - but she settles to work at Legal Aide and do pro-bono work instead of going and making money. Until she meets George Wade (Hugh Grant!).

George Wade is a multi-millionaire businessman, the face of Wade Corporations. He hires Lucy while he is in need of an assistant. They make a bargain - she'll work for him and help him get his building built, but he must keep the Coney Island Community Center. This works - for a while.

Lucy finally gets fed up with George's late night calls and strange demands and his lack of R-E-S-P-E-C-T (see movie for joke). So she gives him her two weeks' notice. But the thing is, Lucy is in love with George, but is too prideful to admit it.

This movie is so well written and well done overall. Hugh Grant does a wonderful job as George, whether you want to admit or not. He and Sandy Bullock may not have perfect chemistry, but they are so funny together. There are moments in the movie that make me laugh out loud. And I rarely laugh out loud.

LUCY: I think you are the most selfish person on the planet, George.
GEORGE: That's just silly. Have you met everyone on the planet?

See this movie. It's genuinely funny.

This romantic comedy has the best of both worlds. It is really funny thanks to Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock. Plus, it is romantic without being sappy. Even my husband (a real guys guy) enjoys it.

Well-mannered but rather inert romantic comedy (spoilers).......2006-12-03

The creators of this civil, well-mannered comedy seem to cater to the old cliche of the impossible romantic pairing, but be warned: this is not a story of two opposite forces clashing against each other and, eventually, realizing how much they have always needed to get together. Here we have a rather aggressive lawyer and a rich, decent guy who falls for her. It's as simple and polite as that.

Bullock's self sufficiency doesn't seem to be needing Grant's decency for a minute. When she finally declares herself to him (he's been lovestruck all the while) it's only because he agreed to give her exactly what she wants. She must be falling as a 'thank you' gesture. Does she seem to really need Grant? The motivational arc seems to imply that she should only because a woman cannot live by herself.

There are other minor problems with this movie. We have a silly scene with a cellphone ringing in the middle of a wedding. The reasons of this are explained verbally in the subsequent scene. But there has been no set-up for the silliness, and the verbal explanation is pat and a cop-out.

Then we have a lot of scenes where people and cars move into the frame from right-field towards left. This is most annoying and signifying a backward pull in the visual development of the narration. The cinematography by Laszlo Kovacs is greyish and uninvolving. Kovacs is a master, and to be sure he manages to impart a consistently dull color tone to the whole proceedings. It must have been a stylistic requirement, yet the fact that all of the the natural daylight is cloudy doesn't sit well with this kind of stuff.

The director/writer succeeded especially in extracting two believable performances from the stars. "Two Weeks Notice" is pleasant enough. No big laughs, though, just polite smiles.

GOOD CHEMISTRY BETWEEN BULLOCK AND GRANT.......2006-11-24

The cast and director did their jobs and made an otherwise average story into a very enjoyable and humorous movie. If you like this one, you should also try the movies (DVD) "Love Actually" and "Miss Congeniality." HAPPY VIEWING.

TWO MEDIOCRE FILMS FOR THE PRICE OF ONE..........2005-01-24

TWO WEEKS NOTICE **

Both my daughter and I looked forward to seeing this film. I am a big fan of both Sandra Bullocks and Hugh Grant, as they are charismatic and talented actors with a feel for comedy. Unfortunately, even they cannot overcome a witless script and the ham-handed direction of Marc Lawrence.

Sandra Bullock plays the role of neurotic Lucy Kelson, a Harvard Law School grad who follows in the footsteps of her activist parents by becoming an activist lawyer. Hugh Grant is in his element as George Wade, a real estate developer and playboy tycoon. When they are brought together by fate, they strike a deal that they believe would be in each of their respective best interests. Lucy will work for George as his chief counsel, while George promises not to apply the wrecker's ball to her beloved Coney Island community center.

Unfortunately, as time passes, these two opposites begin to be attracted to each other. Just as fate contrived to bring them together, however, it appears that fate will also tear them apart. When Lucy discovers that George will be unable to keep his promise about the Coney Island community center, she gives him two weeks notice. Enter June Carter (Alicia Witt), also a Harvard Law grad and Lucy's replacement. The luscious June quickly sizes up George Wade and sets her cap for him, causing Lucy to suffer pangs of jealousy of which she had been previously unaware.

There are no surprises in this formulaic film. Hugh Grant does his slightly wacky British turn, while Sandra Bullocks turns in another intelligently ditzy, infectious performance. It is the script and the direction, however, not the actors, that jettison this remarkably unfunny, romantic comedy. The laughs are few and far between. The dialogue is one dimensional and cartoonish. It fails to build a believable romance between the two main characters. Quite frankly, all the film does is waste the considerable talents of Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullocks, as well as the viewer's time. It is an unintelligent, pedestrian film that would otherwise have tanked but for its star power.

DIVINE SECRETS OF THE YA-YA SISTERHOOD ***

This is a film about mother/daughter relationships and about unconditional love. Despite being marked by fine performances, the film never really grabs the viewer, at least, not this viewer. While moderately enjoyable, I found the film to fall a little flat, as the whole Ya-Ya thing left me cold, finding it all a bit silly.

Not having read the book of the same name upon which the film is based, I had no frame of reference. Judging strictly on the merits of the film, I found that it has its ups and downs. The name of the film is apparently derived from a childhood club to which a group of lifelong friends belonged as children in which they were all Ya-Ya priestesses. These friends, of which Vivi (Ellyn Burstyn) is at the center of this story, are all trying to reconcile Vivi to her daughter Sidda (Sandra Bullock). The friends, as well as Vivi, are all aging southern belles from Louisiana. Sidda, however, has moved North, where she is a budding, successful playwright.

Sidda had a traumatic childhood, as her mother is a mercurial woman with a drinking problem. It seems that Vivi never got over losing her childhood sweetheart during the war. She married another man, Shep Walker (James Garner), Sidda's father and a man who has loved Vivi unconditionally throughout their entire married life, and proceeded to put her husband and her children through a living hell. Still, Vivi and Sidda manage to plod along as so many mothers and daughters do, until Vivi goes too far and Sidda decides that enough is enough.

The story of Vivi, Sidda, and Shep is told in flashbacks, which provide the most interesting parts of the movie. Ashley Judd is simply sensational as the young Vivi, and she outshines all the film and stage veterans in this film, infusing the role with a gritty reality. David Lee Smith is very good as the hunky young Shep, the husband who tries to understand a mercurial wife who has become unbalanced by her longing for what could never be.

Ellen Burstyn as the senior Vivi is not as compelling as the younger one portrayed by Ashley Judd. The senior Vivi comes across as a silly, petulant, spoiled, self-absorbed woman who needs a good swift kick in the butt. Consequently, the viewer cares very little for what happens to her, even though she is eventually reconciled to her daughter and comes to appreciate her patient, selfless husband.

Maggie Smith, Fionnula Flanagan, and Shirley Knight are all excellent as Vivi's lifelong friends, though Ms. Smith occasionally seems to have a bit of difficulty suppressing her British accent. They inject a touch of humor into their attempts to reconcile the estranged Vivi and Sidda, which is a good counterpoint to the underlying pathos of the film. Sandra Bullock is also excellent as the fed up Sidda, who has said that enough is enough. As in all her film, she charms the viewer. James Garner is wonderful as Vivi's long suffering husband, who comes to be appreciated by Vivi only at the end.

Unfortunately, the director appears to have striven for mawkishness. Consequently, the ending of this film is enough to make one gag, as Sidda is inducted into the Ya-Ya sisterhood. This alone is enough for me to counsel viewers to rent, and not buy, this film.

Miss Congeniality 2: Armed and Fabulous ****

As a sequel, this film surprisingly succeeds. Sandra Bullock, with her coltish good looks and her spot on comedic timing, successfully reprises the role of Gracie Hart, FBI agent. In fact, I enjoyed this film even more than I did the prequel, where Gracie Hart infiltrated a national beauty pageant as a contestant, her affableness winning her the award for Miss Congeniality.

It now appears, however, that Agent Hart's ability to work effectively as an agent has been compromised by the publicity that she received from her entry into that national beauty pageant. Gracie Hart is now instantly recognizable, whenever she hits the streets, by an adoring public who has taken to her as a duck takes to water.

This being the case, the powers that be at the FBI decide to make Agent Hart into a poster girl for the FBI, and she is given a mini entourage to polish their diamond in the rough. By the time they get through with her, Agent Hart is as slick and as polished as a cover girl, temporarily losing sight of why she joined the FBI in the first place.

Agent Hart is assigned a bodyguard, problem child agent, Sam Fuller (Regina King), who has some serious anger management issues. They get initially get along together like oil and water, with some funny comedic moments between the two. Ultimately, at the eleventh hour, their relationship evolves into one of mutual respect.

When Agent Hart's best friend, Miss United States (Heather Burns), is kidnapped in Las Vegas, along with pageant official Stan Fields (William Shatner), Agent Hart remembers why it was that she joined the FBI in the first place. Although she is brought into the case strictly as a media liaison, she desperately wants to be taken seriously as an agent on the case, Unfortunately, her investigative efforts are stymied by the local FBI chief, Agent Collins (Treat Williams), who views her as expendable fluff.

While the storyline may be thin, at times, there are enough memorable moments to sustain the film, not least being the excellent comedic performances given by Sandra Bullock and Regina King. It is a professionally successful pairing of two talented actresses with a flair for the comedic. Sandra Bullock proves, once again, that one can be gorgeous and funny. For Regina King, the role of Sam Fuller is a breakout comedic role for her.

Moreover, the supporting cast is likewise funny. William Shatner, who of late has proven himself to have a deft comedic touch, provides some wacky moments. It was also great to see Treat Williams, who is as attractive as ever, playing the role of Agent Collins, the tightly controlled, ego driven, local FBI chief who seeks to wrap up the case successfully for his own personal aggrandizement. Elizabeth Rohm, of Law and Order fame, is a pleasant surprise in the small role of Carol Fields, the FBI agent who is two timing her fellow agent boyfriend with their mutual boss.

Although the film has some plot holes and may be implausible, at times, it still provides some enjoyable comedic moments. There are also cameo appearances by Regis Philbin and his wife, Joy. While this film may not be everyone's cup of tea, fans of Ms. Bullock will surely enjoy seeing her in this one. This funny, silly movie is definitely worth a rental.

Two Weeks Notice **

Both my daughter and I looked forward to seeing this film. I am a big fan of both Sandra Bullocks and Hugh Grant, as they are charismatic and talented actors with a feel for comedy. Unfortunately, even they cannot overcome a witless script and the ham-handed direction of Marc Lawrence.

Sandra Bullock plays the role of neurotic Lucy Kelson, a Harvard Law School grad who follows in the footsteps of her activist parents by becoming an activist lawyer. Hugh Grant is in his element as George Wade, a real estate developer and playboy tycoon. When they are brought together by fate, they strike a deal that they believe would be in each of their respective best interests. Lucy will work for George as his chief counsel, while George promises not to apply the wrecker's ball to her beloved Coney Island community center.

Unfortunately, as time passes, these two opposites begin to be attracted to each other. Just as fate contrived to bring them together, however, it appears that fate will also tear them apart. When Lucy discovers that George will be unable to keep his promise about the Coney Island community center, she gives him two weeks notice. Enter June Carter (Alicia Witt), also a Harvard Law grad and Lucy's replacement. The luscious June quickly sizes up George Wade and sets her cap for him, causing Lucy to suffer pangs of jealousy of which she had been previously unaware.

There are no surprises in this formulaic film. Hugh Grant does his slightly wacky British turn, while Sandra Bullocks turns in another intelligently ditzy, infectious performance. It is the script and the direction, however, not the actors, that jettison this remarkably unfunny, romantic comedy. The laughs are few and far between. The dialogue is one dimensional and cartoonish. It fails to build a believable romance between the two main characters. Quite frankly, all the film does is waste the considerable talents of Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullocks, as well as the viewer's time. It is an unintelligent, pedestrian film that would otherwise have tanked but for its star power.
