Three views of life in the city of all cities comprise this film, with segments directed by Woody Allen, Francis Coppola, and Martin Scorsese. The best of the three is "Life Lessons," directed by Scorsese, about an artist (played by Nick Nolte) who uses his hypersuccess to lure beautiful young aspiring artists to serve as his assistant/lovers. The segment is an astute portrait of the nature of the New York art world. In "Life Without Zoe," Coppola portrays the life of the privileged Zoe, the daughter of a world-renowned flutist, whose adventures on the Upper East Side (in the upper echelons of society) play like something approaching a cartoon. Woody Allen finishes up the film with his "Oedipus Wrecks," a typical Allen number about a successful New York lawyer who's still hounded by his mother--the title tells you all you need to know. Though stronger segments to complement Scorsese's would have made this film much more interesting and enjoyable, it does provide an accurate glimpse into this wondrous city and is a must-see for anyone fascinated by New York. --James McGrath

The 2006 World Cup brought a plethora of soccer films (OK, three) to the cineplex. The most entertaining is this '70s-infused documentary of the New York Cosmos and the brief life of the North American Soccer League (NASL). The Cosmos rose to the pinnacle of success in the league, bringing in many famous players from around the globe including German Franz Beckenbauer, Italian Giorgio Chinaglia, and most notably, Brazilian Pele, the most famous athlete in the world. For a brief, shining moment, these players and the league made soccer hip and viable to a country who hardly embraced the sport beyond pre-teens kicking the funny ball around. The film delves in those who knew Warner Brothers honcho Steve Ross, who funded his passion and lingered in the spotlight. The fast and breezy doc has a great array of music to power through the talking heads, including players, commissioners, agents, coaches, and even Henry Kissinger. The high-scoring Chinaglia is painted as a villain type, who charmed Ross and--now on camera--some of us as he recounts the days. Other players, like Cosmos goalie Shep Messing, recall wonderful stories about being a hack one week to playing with the greatest ever the next. The yarn of brining Pele to America is nearly half the film; an incredible story of dreams, egos, and dollars. The fact he is not interviewed for this film is inconsequential. He's better received as a legend, and deservedly so. --Doug Thomas
Description
Glory, glamour, debauchery, controversy. It's all here in ONCE IN A LIFETIME: THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF THE NEW YORK COSMOS. This untold tale of America's first great soccer team and its larger-than-life superstar reveals how a scrappy team of ragtag athletes rose from total anonymity to stratospheric celebrity only to flame out in a New York minute. From the makers of the award-winning ONE DAY IN SEPTEMBER and DOGTOWN AND Z-BOYS, this hugely entertaining and humorous film has everything -- heroes and villains, egos and excess, wild partying and exciting sports action. Adding to all the drama are candid -- and often juicy interviews with former players, coaches, newsmakers, and journalists. It's a once-in-a-lifetime story you just can't miss.

For hard-core soccer historians.......2007-05-28
Soccer takes root in the United States ... or does it? This documentary chronicles the rise and fall of the New York Cosmos, a professional soccer club in the 1970s and 1980s. If you were a soccer fan looking forward to seeing lots of action and Pele playing, you may be disappointed. Most of the movie is off the field and consists of detailed back story with regard to the growth and eventual financial death of the soccer franchise.
The broader issue is one of soccer in America and how it will take hold. Thirty years after the developments portrayed in the movie, we are still wondering when or if soccer will take root in the United States.
Doubtlessly at the youth level, there is massive participation and growth. However, something happens in the high school and college years which separates United States soccer from the world level and dilutes its popularity. Three decades after Pelé and the New York Cosmos, the MLS continues to draw adequate though not spectacular crowds and TV ratings.
Much of the second half of the documentary involves villainizing Giorgio Chinaglia, a somewhat Machiavellian player brought to the Cosmos to rejuvenate the franchise.
If you are looking for loads of soccer action, rent another DVD.
If you were interested in the history of soccer in the United States as the sport struggles for domestic popularity, by all means rent "Once in a Lifetime."
Accurate portrayal of A Great Time !!!.......2007-04-29
I worked for Warner/Cosmos for two years in the late 70's early 80's partly in Pele's office. This movie was a very accurate portrayal of the "scene". I especially like the Warner Executive's description of Pele's entourage. Schisto was a really nice guy and Pele was always the one bringing in those new very cute Brazilian players to the team, Marino stands out in my mind. I'm so glad they captured the offices and especially the doors of the elevators with the pictures of the Players on them and the BRIGHT yellow phones! No shots of the parties at the Stadium Club though after the games. That was where you would always see the players and the guests. Eric Heiden stands out most in my mind. He had thighs bigger than my waste. If you like Soccer and you like 70's Rock N Roll...you'll LOVE this movie! Very very very funny!
Remember when one star shone brightest in the Cosmos?.......2007-04-21
Growing up in New Jersey in the 1980's, I was vaguely aware that there was a soccer team called the Cosmos that played not far from where I lived. Unfortunately, I was barely walking and talking by the time Pelé had played his final game in Cosmos colors, and I missed out on the magic of their championship seasons in the North American Soccer League. "Once in a Lifetime" transported me back to the 1970's and helped me see what happened during the first heyday of American pro soccer.
Some of the first soccer footage you see in "Once in a Lifetime" is set to opera music - which is fitting for a documentary that unfolds like an opera. After a brief history of American soccer, the emperor arrives on the scene. Entertainment mogul Steve Ross' millions help to raise the NASL's profile from obscurity to unprecedented heights, but he seemingly only cares about victory for his own club rather than the viability of the league. The wooing of Pelé follows. He sweeps into New York like a god to sign a huge contract and sparks national interest in soccer by demonstrating his breathtaking skills on the soccer field.
Not long after, we meet the sympathetic villain of the piece, Italian striker Giorgio Chinaglia, without whom the Cosmos would not have enjoyed their success. His bigger-than-life personality, however, brings him into some conflict with Pelé. Then, after the final curtain call comes for the great Brazilian, Chinaglia begins to assert himself within the organization, and his close relationship to Ross appears to lead to his running the team from the locker room.
At the height of the Cosmos' glory days, free-flowing money, superstar players, hedonism, Hollywood glitz and NASL championships were the norm. The rapid declines of the Cosmos and the league, however, mirrored the Roman Empire: too much excess and too much expansion. Still, the film does a service by reminding viewers that future for soccer in the United States isn't bleak; it may never reach the level of football, basketball and baseball, but it appears to be here to stay.
"Once in a Lifetime" features excellent bits from interviews with key characters in the Cosmos story: from the team's first coach Gordon Bradley to some of the greatest superstars of the game who donned the Cosmos colors, like Carlos Alberto and Franz Beckenbauer. More than a few members of the front office management also weigh in on the rise and fall of the club and the league.
The documentary makes good use of photographs, Cosmos match highlights and other video clips. The music video-style presentation and an excellent mix of `70s soul/funk, disco and rock perfectly match the changing moods of the film. Actor Matt Dillon's excellent narration complements the various highs and lows of the Cosmos. These elements all combine to give viewers a feeling of how New Yorkers and the rest of the nation experienced Cosmos-mania during the height of the league's popularity.
The extra features on the DVD are superb. Three edited Cosmos games give you a taste of the old NASL as it was originally presented on ABC. The "Stories of Pelé" program from ESPN gives you a better insight of what the uniquely gifted player meant to those who played with him and against him over the years.
These Guys Were Even Bigger Than You Remember.......2007-03-09
No one who played US youth soccer in the 70s doesn't have at least a vague memory of the New York Cosmos, and a clearer recollection of the team's franchise player, Pele. Most probably can't relate, however, the historical significance of that team, and can't appreciate (or believe) how huge American soccer was for one, shining moment, as the 70s traded in their sequins for the early 80s. Once In A Lifetime shines a bright and admiring spotlight on the team, and narrates the remarkable conflation of events that almost put American soccer on the world's stage.
The Cosmos were the brainchild of a Warner Brothers bigwig named Steve Ross, created as the soccer equivalent to New York's Mets (the "cosmopolitan" to their "metropolitan"). And while Ross and most of his co-financiers didn't know a lick about the world's greatest game, they at least recognized its potential success in the US if marketed correctly, and they knew enough to listen to fellow record execs and worldly soccer fans Nesui and Ahmet Ertegun (former president of Atlantic Records and "the world's greatest record man," R.I.P.). Thus began the fascinating rags-to-riches tale of the Cosmos, who went almost overnight from playing on fields spray painted green and strewn with broken glass, to starring on national television and selling out major football stadiums nation-wide, all facilitated by the signing of freshly retired Brazilian star Pele and prime-of-his career Italian star Giorgio Chinaglia. The quickness with which events transpired is best told by some of the Cosmos' lineups: for example, nowhere else and at no other time could soccer's greatest player (and highest paid athlete ever, at the time) have shared field time with Shep Messing, a hayseed who'd posed for Playgirl months earlier. The pre-international phase Cosmos were literally playing alongside their heroes, and probably had to quit their day jobs as the North American Soccer League (NASL) grew.
The pace of the documentary is great, with plenty of soccer clips, paparazzi-shot photos and news conferences, and funny interviews featuring a lot of suits trying vainly to reconcile events remembered differently. The Cosmos' ascent to celebrity, the NASL's rise and fall, and the players' egos and rivalries, each are tales unto themselves that don't need embellishing. Once In A Lifetime wisely takes a hands-off approach in that regard.
Matt Dillon was an interesting choice as narrator, but gives the film a gritty feel as the team's earlier hardscrabble days are recalled. The DVD extras in particular are outstanding (to the soccer fan, anyway): a couple of NASL championship games, and Pele's retirement match in which he played a half apiece with the Cosmos and his Brazilian team Santos. Incidentally, Pele decided not to be interviewed for the movie- this could have detracted more were there not so much great stuff already included; as it was, it somehow added to the man's mystery and legend, and fit just right.
History of United States Soccer.......2007-02-21
This is a great documentary. Many people do not know how popular soccer was back in the 70s in America, and this tells the whole story. Must watch for US soccer fans and all soccer fans alike.

New York Stories.......2007-06-11
This is one of Woody Allens best , I know it's a short subject but it is hysterical. The other two stories are very good too. I finally bought it I don't know what took me so long. It's Great!
New York, New York.......2007-03-13
The anthology of three short films that take place in New York City was made by three great American directors, Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, and Francis Ford Coppola.
"Life Lessons" directed by Martin Scorsese, literally took my breath away - it made me want to rewatch all Scorsese's films (with the one exception, GONY, though). What a magnificent work - visually it is as powerful as the painting Nolte's Lionel was painting. Combining in one short film Procul Harum's "A whiter shade of pale" and Puccini's "Nessun Dorma" from "Turandot" was a stroke of genius. This film is an ode to the power of talent; it is about greatness and curse of the gift, not about love to the woman. The best scene of the film and I'd say one of the best ever made about the Artist's work is Nolte triumphantly painting his masterpiece - his love, desire, lust, cries, whispers, tears, and humiliations magically transform with every stroke of his brush into the immortal, triumphant, brilliant work of art. By the time the painting is finished, he would need a new source of inspiration and self-torture, and the cycle will repeat over again. Devilishly clever portrait of an Artist as Not a Young Man. 9.5/10 (4.5/5)
I loved Woody Allen's "Oedipus Wrecks" and I think it is very funny and touching. Looks like Allen has met mothers or grandmothers like Mrs. Millstein in real life and his little gem is his love-hate letter to them. In the end, mom always knows what is best for her little boy. Mae Questel and Julie Kavner (Marge Simpson) were wonderful. Woody's face after his mom "disappears" and the scene when he practically makes love to the chicken drumstick are pure delight; also the commentary that New York is used to everything and readily accepts the crazy situation - it is so true. One of the best Allen's films I've seen lately - I am very glad that I finally saw it.
Larry David ("Seinfeld", "Curb Your Enthusiasm") plays the Theater Manager. It made me think if Estelle Costanza created by David and Mrs. Millstein (Woody's omnipresent mother) have a lot in common in making the lives of their sons miserable and smothering them with their merciless love? 9/10 (4/5)
Coppola's "Life Without Zoë" was much weaker than Scorsese's and Allan's stories and paled in comparison - this episode "from the lives of the reach and beautiful" was pretty and cute but you can skip it. 5/10 (2.5/5)
Life in New York.......2006-08-28
This film is 3 short stories in one, all of them set in New York City and directed by M. Scorsese, F. Coppola and Woody Allen.
The first stars Nick Nolte as an eccentric, egotistical painter, centering on his troubled and tired relationship with his beautiful, frustrated assistant, Rosanna Arquette, whose own artistic goals are eclipsed by her mentor. It may be predictable, but these two stars are worth watching in anything they do, especially Rosanna.
The Woody Allen portion, Oedipus Wrecks, is very funny, almost slapstick about his relationship with an overbearing mother, who manages to haunt him, hilariously, even from the beyond.
Life Without Zoe is an affectionate look at a young girl growing up privileged with wealth but deprived of attention and love by her inattentive parents. She lives in a posh hotel environment, interacting with other children of wealth. Her playful search for missing jewelry leads her eventually to a reconciliation with her parents.
This film is a smorgasbord of situations that could conceivably be running their course simultaneously at any given time in the hectic cycle of life in New York City.
Coulda Been.......2006-07-08
Scorcese: Best of the three. Smart, insightful, well acted. Nolte and Arquette do great with necessarily sparse material. The only one of the three that would probably survive as a full length movie. 5 stars
Copolla: Dreck. Dumb. Pointless. Poorly acted. Self indulgent.
Zero stars.
Allen: Wanted so badly to like it but just never quite got there. Typical Allen neurosis. Not very funny. Scenes with the fake paranormal are the best. A pleasant, if very mild, diversion. Worth a viewing. 2.5 stars.
It's art. You give it up, you were never an artist in the first place. .......2005-12-14
This selection of three short films has been a longtime favorite of mine, although I could do without the third piece (Woody Allen's Oedipus Wrecks) and feel just as satisfied.
Scorsese's bit is by far the best and although it's portrayal of ego and the New York art world left me wanting more, it was just the perfect length and depth. The character of Lionel Dobie rang true to many artists I know, along with his never realizing that his art is his true wife. The soundtrack (the continuous loop of "Whiter Shade of Pale") was a natural fit.
Coppola's piece was a charming and cinematically gorgeous little fairytale. It's not deep, just full of simple brilliance. I was bewitched by the father as a flautist.
I've never gotten through Allen's film, so I can't accurately characterize it except for the fact that its unwatchability might be evidence enough.
This collection, however, is one of the many reasons that point to the fact that New York City is, in the end, where I will hang my hat.

Description
Since exploding onto the scene The Strokes have given rock music the strangling it so badly needed. Not only have they won the hearts and minds of the music press and alternative crowd but they have also crossed over into the mainstream without sacrificing any of their credibility. In just three years, The Strokes have gone from low-key New York club band to internationally famous major league players. The Strokes `New York Stories' now tells the complete and unauthorized story behind the band for the first time.

Actaully pretty damn good.......2006-12-22
OK the band weren't involvd, but if you are a fan of the best group around go get this, its got a lot of interesting stuff, and in my view is highly recommended.
One of the worst band documentaries ever..........2006-01-18
I bought this DVD because I really adore the Strokes. Good music, good people, good style...not so good documentary. Whoever made this video should not make anymore at all! The strokes were not even in this besides very few pictures & 10 second clips of them & the "exclusive interviews" were not that exclusive. No sound from any of the strokes & no interviews with them...I can go on. I mean c'mon...a documentary of the Strokes should at least have the Strokes in it, right?
watch you talking about willis?.......2005-11-26
The story of the Strokes is the story of wealth and privilege, and its endless amounts of free time to be arty and practice trying to act like Lou Reed and VU riffs. This was made without RCA, and so lacks strokes music.
The band apparently wanted nothing to do with it, it is practically DIY, with no interviews. This just shows what a bunch of brats they are not to support this project. Their 2nd album sucked anyway.
i wish it was good.......2005-08-14
this dvd sucks. im a die hard strokes fan and expected the dvd to open up with some strokes music or and interview or two.there is absolutely no strokes music and they have a few like stock photos of them doin their thing live but other than that this dvd is a complete letdown.do not waste ur money go buy their two albums instead.
Music from The Strokes? No. Interviews? No. Good DVD? No........2005-03-28
It's just one of those things you end up watching at 3 in the morning. But skip this one. You should be sleeping.
I am a die-hard Strokes fan so when New York Stories came out, I had to have it. Much to my disappointment, it turned out to contain no music by The Strokes, or interviews with any members of the band.
If you still feel like you need to see this DVD, don't pay more than $5 for it. You have been officially warned.

As a native of Central New York I found this to be interesting, since most of us grow up hearing these stories. The production on this was very good. I'm a bit dissapointed that they left two of the most popular hautings in Syracuse. The Landmark Theatre and "13 Curves". I would really love to see another dvd featuring other hauintings in the area.
The Old Quarry is Fantastic !.......2007-01-12
I watched this documentary style piece and was fascinated with the supernatural stories in Central New York. The topics were edge of your seat and the treatment was very professional. The whole things was well put together and I look forward to seeing more things like this to buy.

This is NOT a classic haunted house flick.......2005-10-18
Save your money if you're looking for a good haunted house flick. This isn't even a bad haunted house movie... it's just a bad movie. I was bored 15 minutes in, and it never got any better. First of all, the direction is poor, as is the cinematography... it looks poorly done and cheap... there's a story, if you stay awake to follow it. It sure doesn't move quickly. If you're looking to be creeped out, stay away. If you're watching because your class is reading the story... well then tell your teacher that the class should read a more interesting Henry James story.
CEREBRAL GOOSEBUMPS.......2004-01-28
Since I'm only really familiar with Henry James' TURN OF THE SCREW, which reached the screen in 1961 as THE INNOCENTS with Deobrah Kerr ( a marvelous film), I wasn't sure what James intention was in this confusing, though interesting, film. It opens with Michael York (looking like a disheveled Ebenezer Scrooge) going to an old house and drinking a glass of wine. Okay...next, we meet a young couple who go to the same house, make out on the steps and then the girl tells her lover she is pregnant. Andrew Bowen as the young man is viscerally compelling and gives a performance that is not usually found in this type of movie. Aideen O'Donnell as the girl is likewise beautifully effective in a small role. Of course, the boy is worried about his parents' opinion of this common girl, so he arranges an abortion for her. The abortionist is not even a doctor, doesn't use any kind of anethsetic, except Laudanum, and of course, once the abortion is performed, young Sarah is not in good shape. John takes her to her room, and promises her he will be back with help. However, he doesn't, and she dies. That leads him into a nightmarish guilt trip, punctuated by ghostly visions, which leads him to consult York, who has been accused of killing his daughter (Claudia Christian).
From there on, it turns into a chase the suspected murderer, and an ending that is quite inexplicable.
In essence, this is a movie about guilt, and what it can do to you. There is more terror in the souls of these two men than in any Hell House.
