Writer and director Whit Stillman (Metropolitan, The Last Days of Disco) offers up this poignant and cutting romantic 1990 comedy set in the magical southern Spanish metropolis, a city in the midst of cultural and political upheaval. Taylor Nichols (Metropolitan) plays an American living in the Catalonian capital working for a stateside company. He is visited by his unctuous cousin (Chris Eigeman), a naval attaché who's in Barcelona to spin a little public relations for the impending arrival of the U.S. fleet amid some virulent left-wing, anti-American attitude. The two cousins are constantly at odds, arguing about everything from politics to women to their true feelings for one another and their constant self-examination. Largely the two men spend their time in search of romance abroad, as they humorously overanalyze the women they meet and what they want from a relationship, until fate takes a shocking turn and both men are forced to reevaluate who they are and what they want out of life. Barcelona features a turn from Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite) as a Spanish national working as a hostess, free with her sexuality and smitten with Eigeman. Stillman's writing is as crisp and observant as his striking visual take on the city and its people, both natives and expatriates. Barcelona is a terrific comedy of attitudes and culture clashes that manages to be offbeat, sardonic, and unexpectedly wise. --Robert Lane

Part concert documentary, part pop-cultural time capsule, Bert Stern's Jazz on a Summer's Day chronicles the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival with an approach as deceptively relaxed, even impulsive, as the music itself. Still photographer Stern sidesteps more formal documentary conventions such as narrative voiceovers to wander purposefully from festival stage to boarding-house jam sessions, taking in the parallel color and motion of the America's Cup preparations when he isn't capturing rich color footage of the performances and the celebratory mood of the concertgoers. In the process, he documents American jazz at a notably golden moment in its development--diverse, adventurous, and still broadly popular, this was jazz not yet under the shadow of rock and youth culture, played by an integrated artistic community a few short years away from social and political turmoil that would boil divisively to the surface during the '60s. To say Stern was rolling film in a jazz Camelot is overstatement, but only slightly so.

Stern's circular approach and wonderful eye achieve a breezy languor at the expense of more comprehensive coverage of the festival's bumper crop of strong jazz, blues, and gospel musicians. Perhaps inevitably, the camera lingers on Louis Armstrong, Anita O'Day, Mahalia Jackson, Dinah Washington, Thelonious Monk, Gerry Mulligan, and George Shearing. Avid fans of later styles may be frustrated by the fleeting glimpses of other musicians such as Eric Dolphy and Art Farmer, or the honor roll of classic jazz stylists whose Newport sets weren't included in the film, but such omissions seem forgivable, if not necessary, to Stern's serendipitous design. --Sam Sutherland

5 out of 5 stars an excellent preservation of time.......2007-05-01

This is a beautiful looking film. Stern was essentially a photographer who got ahold of film equipment and was able to document this event (the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival). The sheer quality of the images (keep in mind it was 1958) really reflect Stern's true calling as a photographer. That being said, no, he is not a filmmaker by trade; if you are looking for a masterful film, look elsewhere; if you are looking for footage of the jazz musicians, by themsleves, isolated from the experience of playing to an audience, look elsewhere. However, if you want a great looking document portraying the experience of great jazz musicians playing to a crowd in 1958, and what it really looked and felt like, this is the film you must own. In my opinion, the opening scenes of Jimmy Guiffre playing (a vastly underrated jazz legend) are enough to get someone hooked. Lastly, this is one of the times when the DVD-format really shows its advantages in terms of sound. It's fantastic, and really captures the experience of this 1958 event like nothing else.

5 out of 5 stars A fabulous bit of jazz history.......2007-01-05

We got this after seeing the Anita O'Day clips on YouTube. We think she certainly was one of the stars of this event, but the entire documentary is delightful and inspiring, both for the music recorded and the recorded moments of the jazz audience in 1958. Worth owning!

5 out of 5 stars must have for traditional jazz fans.......2006-12-14

this is by far the best quality and footage I have seen of the
older jazz concerts. Color and sound are excellent, and it's
the best footage I have seen of Pop's and Mahalia. By contrast
the 62 festival is terrible in quality- poor sound and film.
It is annoying to cut away from the some of the performances,
but again it is still the best quality I have seen. If someone
has anything better out there, tell us about it.

5 out of 5 stars Time capsule of the 50's.......2006-11-30

I am recommending this tape to any serious music fanatic. Being an old curmudgeon probably helps with the fascination of this film as I can relate to the 50's era. What a change from Newport to Woodstock, only 10 years later. Growing up in the Hippie years and looking back to 1958, I feel we have lost a way of life along the way. If you are looking for a peek into the 50's, buy this. The filming is great for it's time (35mm). Oh, how I long for those days to return after watching this flim.

1 out of 5 stars *1/2 Star* Less than meets the eye.......2006-11-13

Pure and utter disappointment. I don't understand why this dvd received the high rating that it did. I suspect that some of the record labels pay people to post rave reviews that upon close inspection turn out to be hype. From a purely objective viewpoint, the audio and video quality of this release isn't worth the plastic its printed on. The color is washed out, and the audio sounds like rubber bands and distortion. Sure you get some head shots of some jazz greats, but that in and of itself is not worth the purchase. My advice... save your money.

5 out of 5 stars remembering the highlights.......2007-06-22

This documentary DVD will please the many soccer fans with vivid memories of the finals of the European Cup - from 1993 on called the Champions League.

In this annual tournament the soccer champions of all European countries compete for the championship of Europe, one of the greatest honors in world soccer. Consequently this tournament invariably overflows with excellent soccer skills, tension, emotion, drama and sometimes also questionable referee decisions. Creating many legends, making rich soccer history.

Different from what its title suggests, this DVD only shows fragments of the finals: the goals in particular. From the period 1955 - 2005. As each Champions League-tournament lasts from September until the following May, all preliminary matches are ommitted. Capturing their highlights, too, should require at least 25 DVD's.

Very good, a must for any football fan. This dvd is full of information about the finals, goals scored best players and so much more!!!

4 out of 5 stars uefa cup.......2007-02-25

A nice review of all the UEFA Cup finals. The DVD mostly just shows the goals and moves quickly from one year to the next but presents an enjoyable hour and a half of soccer (it also presents brief interviews with many of the soccer greats)

4 out of 5 stars We need films like this in times like these.......2006-11-06

For an American expat living in Europe, Barcelona's complex sense of indignation and resignation at how Americans are viewed abroad rings true. Beautifully written, and shot like a love letter to its titular city, this excellent, intelligent film helps me find a way to laugh through the tears. I recently bought Stillman's earlier film, Metropolitan, and I found that it has held up, if anything, slightly better than Barcelona as time has passed. In both films the dialogue is marvellous, and the characters familiar. Where is Whit Stillman now, anyway? We need him. Get to work, Whit!

5 out of 5 stars A must see.......2006-10-25

This witty and very intelligent comedy is a slice of life of two 30-something Americans in Spain. Ted's an awkward, yet successful sales representative, who's down on his luck with the ladies. As a result, he plunges himself into a series of self-help methods as well as religion. After an unexpected, late night phone call, his cousin Fred, a junior naval officer, and the quintessential ugly-American, who's got no problem forcing his two-cents on anyone, ends up staying with him. Ted's not happy with this, as he still blames Fred for the loss of his kayak when they were preteens, so early on he asks Fred how long he plans to stay, because "guests, like fish, begin to smell after three days." Fred answers, "no, you'll find that I stink on the first day." And this basically sums up their relationship throughout the movie. So the two basically play on each other's nerves, fumble through some relationships with a few ladies, give us a glimpse at Barcelona's nightlife, and offer a heck of an insight on the cultural differences between the U.S. and Spanish. In the end they patch up their relationship, get their girls and seemingly live happily ever after--but not after some really funny, and even tragic, moments.

It helps to have an understanding of the Spanish and their view of Americans, so many viewers might not catch some of the subtle jokes. If you're expecting a comedy in the vein of Animal House, then this isn't your movie. But if you're looking for flick that will tickle your intellectual funny bone, then grab your Pringles and pop this one in. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Whit Stillman a Republican? Maybe, but it doesn't show........2006-02-17

I read in a recent review that Whit Stillman is a Republican. This film certainly doesn't show it, as it pokes fun at ignorant US imperialism just as much as it does at the ignorance of some European leftists of the late 1970s and early 1980s. I myself am what most Americans would probably describe as a radical leftie or communist (I prefer the anarchist label myself). Anyway, perhaps Stillman really believes the political stuff his pro-US characters spout, but whatever the intention, what comes across is not exactly positive, and his politically conservative US characters act with just as much cluelessness about Europeans as his politically progressive European characters do towards the US.

Anyway, Barcelona has been one of my favourite films ever since I first saw it in the theatres when it first came out. It has some very dry humour and I think one of the messages I get from the movie is that it shows very well how political differences only serve to get in the way of the realities of human relationships, especially when violent fanaticism (of either political stripe) gets in the way.

On a personal note, I happened to be in Barcelona a couple of years after the events in the film supposedly happened, and I must say the movie does exhibit a real feel for the city, although my own personal experiences there left me with the impression that it wasn't the hotbed of political radicalism that Stillman's film conveys. In fact I was struck more by the remaining aspects of Franco's fascist regime than by any sense of broiling radicalism. But I guess a lot can change in a couple of years, and I really wasn't there long enough to get a real overview of the political situation.

5 out of 5 stars Whit, Please Come Back!.......2005-07-10

First things first, Whit Stillman should be making movies until he dies. Let's get that guy back behind the camera for the good of everybody. Barcelona, as a film, is deceptively serious as, amid its banal conversations about the proper way to shave and management theory, grave subjects are illuminated.

The reflexive anti-Americanism of Spain and Europe are integral to many of the interactions experienced by Taylor and Eigeman, the two main characters. It's at the end of The Cold War and Spain is conflicted over NATO. A humorous side light concerning this situation is made by Eigeman, "I think it's well-known that anti-Americanism has its roots in sexual impotence, at least in Europe." Eigeman's presence in the uniform of a US Naval officer in the Barcelona streets has somewhat predictable results. Yet, no one is able to refute his point that even if the Spaniards don't like NATO, they would never prefer the Soviets rolling through Western Europe instead. The conspiracy theories that some of the Spanish poseurs spout are quite bankrupt on their surface (such as the existence of a right-wing labor union called the AFL-CIA).

On an aesthetic level, this is a beautiful film. Shots of the grand buildings that comprised old Catalonia are breathtaking. The outfits and faces of the trade show girls are just as riveting. I think Stillman succeeds in capturing some of the city's nobility within these frames.

The Spanish women are a mystery to both Eigeman and Taylor, but, with Taylor, the audience is constantly present as he overanlyzes emotions which few words could possibly describe. You have the feeling though that a character like Taylor's would be a foreigner in any land he visited. Thanks for this one, Mr. Stillman, now go make six more.

5 out of 5 stars One of my All Time Favorites .......2005-06-15

This film made a very deep impression on me as, although I'm originally from Canada, I always introduce myself as "from New York" when I visit Europe, and I have experienced the same kind of anti-Americanism that is lampooned in this film. Also, for about 13 years (before I got married), I made numerous trips to Europe, met lots and lots of European women, and had some of the same experiences with them as the characters in this film: Two American cousins (Fred, a naval officer, and Ted, a Christian Sales Exec) who are sharing an apartment in Barcelona, while searching for members of the opposite sex.

Ted meets the woman of his dreams, only to find out, while lying in bed with her, that she is living with another man. Just when this problem seems to have been overcome, Fred opens his big mouth and places Ted's hopes of marrying the woman in jeopardy.

After being falsely accused of being a CIA agent in the Barcelona press, Fred is falsely accused of stealing a large amount of money by Ted, is kicked out of the apartment, catches his girlfriend in bed with another man, and then suffers an even greater tragedy as the film climaxes.

While I haven't had any similar experiences during my trips to Spain, I have been accused of being a CIA agent in Finland, and, in both Finland and Sweden, bedded women only to find out afterwards that they were married or living with men. (I slept with a married woman in Denmark too, but she told me beforehand.)

Whit Stilman's films rely heavily on dialogue, and the dialogue is highly interesting and stimulating, as well as funny. He's a kind of American Eric Rohmer, except with much more humor. Stilman knows Spain well as he has spent a lot of time there. (His wife is from Spain.)

I have seen this film three times, and with each repeat viewing I notice something new. For example, at one point in the film, Fred picks up some papers off of Ted's desk at the office and asks, "What are all these red dots on your work?" It was only on the third viewing that I noticed, earlier in the film, that while the two cousins are conversing in their apartment, Ted's motivational tapes that are playing in the background instruct the listener to mark his work with a red dot every time he picks it up, to encourage him to complete the work the first time.

This film would be on my top ten list of favorite movies of all time. (It's so good that it might even appear on my top one list.)

You can't crank this loud enough. Bruce is the best live performer bar none. There are so many amazing, no, make that AMAZING performances on this DVD but all you have to do is watch one to be a believer--tune it right to "Born in the USA." You cannot look away. The energy is like nothing else, it is truly incredible that the energy can still be conveyed via a DVD. Even more incredible is that you then remember that Bruce is playing the song in Spain. This is a mind-blowing DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Pure Springsteen Exuberance.......2007-01-04

Great fun! Like all Springsteen live performances, he puts everything into it and surely earns his pay. The music selection is great and the video coverage is complete enough that you really feel a part of the audience.
The audio is pretty good, but I find at high volume, which suits this type of music, the lyrics can seem muffled. However, the spirit of the performance is infectious and the lyrics less important. So, ramp it up and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great Concert.......2006-03-23

I admit that I'm a Bruce Springsteen fan, but I don't necessarily like all of his music. I had taped this concert, or at least an edited hour of it, on network television over a year ago. While I was off for about 2 1/2 weeks over this past Christmas holidays, I reaquainted myself with it. I watched parts of it over and over even though I had bought 5 concert DVD's that I'd planned to watch over the holidays and hadn't even watched 3 of them. I thought the concert was great, with the songs being in the same vein as his Tunnel of Love CD, which I really liked.

While I was watching the Texas - USC game in the Rose Bowl, I mistakenly put this tape in the VCR to record that night's episode of Law and Order. I was in grief when I realized that I'd recorded over the concert. I tried a couple of different sources to get another copy of that concert with no luck. I didn't know the concert was from his tour of The Rising album because I'd never heard the CD. I checked out a copy of this CD from our public library and saw that it must be, and that Amazon had a concert of this album that was recorded in Barcelona. I took a chance that this was the concert that I'd recorded and was overjoyed when I found that it was.

I have Springsteen's Complete Anthology and Concert in New York DVD's, but I like this one way better. Knowing that many of the songs are about 9/11 and understanding the context of the lyrics makes the concert even better. Clarence is in fine form on sax, plus I liked his wife Patti's and sister Soozie's performances. They all just love the audience going crazy over the concert. Great concert!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent concert DVD.......2006-03-13

I've been to 3 Bruce concerts, and this DVD concert is better than any I went to. The power, and passion Bruce and the entire band exert is energizing, especially in the opening song "The Rising". The addition of Suzie Tyrell to the band is as Bruce sings on "Crush On You" c'est manifique! She delivers a sound, and a warm-friendly look which captured my attention. This concert DVD is a must see. I'm just praying it will be digitally mastered to CD, because I'll be the first to purchase it.

5 out of 5 stars Touchstone Band.......2007-05-14

The most thrilling flamenco music & dancing EVER that would make even sir Paco De Lucia wish he was on stage with the band.

I wish I was in the crowd as well, the DVD gave me this proper surge of rush to the brain as soon as the Touchstone band version of "Spain" was applauded to.

A DVD with FABULOUS 'Extras' footage & behind the scenes too with Chick & the rest of the band.

5 out of 5 stars Another Corea Classic!.......2007-04-29

Chick Corea has distinguished himself over the incredible span of his musical career as a thoughtful composer; a master arranger of talent with his many ensemble groupings of musicians; as well as a virtuoso keyboard talent - in his solo works and collaborations with other keyboardists, various instrumentalists and vocalists. Having viewed the ten-DVD box set "Rendevous In New York" and later witnessed the live tour series of mini-concerts he organized behind the release of that monumental package; I thought I had seen virtually everything that he was capable of - until this disc came out! The DVD highlights new musical compositions from his latest music CD "The Ultimate Adventure" and includes a guest performance by two outstanding flamenco dancers who augmented the amazing musical talents Corea assembled for his working group under the 'Touchstone' banner. The camera work is very good in this presentation and the sound(as always on his productions)is crisp, natural and well-balanced. I especially enjoyed the additional 'behind the scenes' bonus features on the making of the music CD, including the observations of the various players who participated in the making of the record and/or the live performance DVD. While Corea has a well-established reputation from his days of playing electric fusion, it's his venturing into other areas in his musical pursuits that are the most rewarding for me as a listener. The acoustic instrumental portions of the 'No Mystery' album(from the quartet version of Return To Forever)have always been special favorites of mine and these new works remind me of that period in his musical progression. Any fan of his various endeavors that have branched out across the jazz/classical spectrum will definitely enjoy this disc, and I, for one, am glad his work is being well-documented both aurally and visually. There have been so many great musical performers of the past century whose outstanding contributions to modern culture have gone unpreserved visually and for many of them the audible representations are only of fair-to-medium quality, at best. But here's one of the best from one of the best!

5 out of 5 stars Get Inspired by The Ultimate Adventure.......2007-04-15

The smile of Carlos Benavent on his face after his bass guitar solo in the tune Spain is worth alone to buy this DVD. Everything was exactly right for this concert, the location and stage at the Palau de la Musica in Barcelona, the cast of musicians with Chick and his band Touchstone, the deep, sincere and inspiring performance by all of them accompanied by two, young flamenco dancers. I've seen this band at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands in 2005, which was already a unique experience, but on this DVD they take the music to the next level. The music is a unique blend of many styles, like jazz, latin, Spanish music, but I would do no justice to this music by pinpointing it to a certain category. Most of all it is good music, Touchstone music, performed on sacred ground.

Ten years and six films (most released straight to video) have made these plucky dinosaurs favorites among the younger set. This new adventure is, well, pretty much like all the others. Littlefoot hears the story of a legendary dinosaur that defended the land years before and is praised by the mysterious land form known as Saurus Rock. When a strange brontosaurus named Doc wanders through town, Littlefoot is convinced he is the legend. Same old fare: earthshakes, mean old "sharptooths" (T-Rexes), lots of screaming, and a lesson learned. Only three songs. The biggest surprise is Kris Kristofferson as the voice of Doc. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars A phonimal movie.......2007-05-16

in the land before time six it has been a few months since the reunion of little foot and chomper in land before time five. When a series of bad luck strikes the valley after the accidental desturction of Sarus rock. Little foor and his frined petri, sara spike, and ducky must ,ake things right again to save the valley. This movie should be fine for kids ages 12 and up due to occasional scenes with mild cartoon violence and intensity, and mild scary images. If you have kids that like this series but are to young to watch it there is also a land before time tv series that first aired about a couple of weeks ago. The broadcast times differs depending which state or contient you live on. It usually comes on around 9:30 AM here and either befor or after this in the other parts of the world depending on the time differnce between country or city you live in. Can little foot and his friends once again save the day in there newest adventure. This actually not the newest movie but the newest one that they have brodcast on tv was great Long Neck Migration tinnosaurus deep water, and the day of the flyers have yet to be broodcast on Cartoon network. If these movies are broadcast they usally skipp around in the series rather than showing them in chronological order. If you don't want to collect these individual you can get either the first four movies at once or the first nine movies at once. The four movie set tends to be cheaper than the 9 movie set it can cost less 30$ to get the first for movies in DVD fomat if you get them in like new condition instead of good or new condition. I recommend you don't get new version o dvds unleash they are real cheap aunder $20 or $15 dollars like the Epoch Evolution.

5 out of 5 stars This one is my kids' favorite of the series.......2006-03-28

We own probably 8-9 of the Land Before Time series and without question this is the volume that my 3 year old boy will play the most often. His older cousin's mom told me this was her daughter's favorite also. I think kids like the character, Doc, a "long neck" with a John Wayne attitude. The young dinosaurs believe that Doc may be the legendary long neck who long ago defeated a T-Rex and saved the other dinosaurs in the valley. Kids also seem to like the songs in this movie, which are definitely a step up from many of the others. If you're looking to only get a couple from the series, I would recommend the first movie and this one.

I don't care for this one, it's cute, but that's all. It doesn't have the beauty like the oringinal nor does it have a meaning like in the 7th and why always about the long necks? If you notices there was many about Little Foot only one about Petrie, one about Ducky and Spike and none about Cera! Little Foot is starting to annoy me. So is Cera.

4 out of 5 stars about the film/movie la teta y la luna.................2006-09-14

I have bought a copy of this DVD film/movie and have watched. This DVD film/movie basically talks about how ages of different people during their early days become interested in woman whom have a fiancee. This is another great work by JJ Bigas Luna apart from another good work that is Ages of LULU which is from the director himself. I have seen another great director's work which is from Larry Clark and what I can say is great and the titles of these films are Ken Park, Bully, Kids and Another Day in Paradise. This DVD film/movie La Teta Y La Luna is recommended to those whom are interested in this genre of film/movie.

5 out of 5 stars A Boy In Search Of A Surrogate Mother.......2006-03-29

'La Teta y la Luna' is a light-hearted and sensual story of a little nine year old boy named Tete (Biel Duran) who wants to be treated the same as his newborn baby brother. Unable to get his Mother's attention and affection away from her new bundle of joy, Tete decides to go in search of a surrogate Mother.

Tete asks the moon to provide him with a loving female. When a beautiful French dancer (Mathilda May) and her husband arrive in town Tete is certain she's the one he's been looking for. However convincing her won't be easy, not only does he have to deal with her husband, but another local teenager is also in hot pursuit of the enticing Estrellita.

This is definitely not for the prudish, or easily offended. There is quite a bit of frontal nudity in this film. However if you're open-minded and have a good understanding of European humor you will appreciate this erotic little comedy as much as I did. By the way, Mathilda May is absolutely ravishing, I don't know if I've ever seen a more beautiful woman in any film!

Live in Barcelona captures the hectic energy of Elton John's 1992 world tour but drops several of the highlights, including a rare live performance of his classic album cut "All the Girls Love Alice." Still, at two hours, there's enough to sate both hard-core and casual fans, especially since much of the best material remains: the emotional opening, "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me"; poignant versions of "The One" and "The Last Song"; and the showstopping cover of Queen's final anthem, "The Show Must Go On" (Queen's vocalist Freddie Mercury had died only a few months before the tour began).

Visually, this was also an historic show: Gianni Versace designed the stage set and Elton's costumes. While not obvious to the viewer, Versace's contribution gets some play in the accompanying 50-minute documentary about John's The One album, videos, and subsequent tour; it includes interviews with Elton, lyricist Bernie Taupin, guitarist Davey Johnstone, and Versace himself, along with rare rehearsal footage. --Kevin Filipski

5 out of 5 stars A Spectacular Concert.......2004-07-18

1992 when Elton finally overcame his personal addictions and reemerged as one of the world's consumate showmen. Touring to promote his (then) new album "The One", he stopped over in Barcelona for a filmed concert. The result was this amazing live dvd that every music fans must have.

This truly is one of the best shows he ever did. He sounds alive and well and he is clearly enjoying himself more than he head in years. The highlights on this disc include "Philadelphia Freedom", "Burn Down The Mission", "Tiny Dancer", "Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters Parts 1 & 2" and "Funeral For A Friend"/Love Lies Bleeding". He also does a few songs he rarely ever takes a stab at in concert. "Blue Avenue" is a track from 1989's "Sleeping With The Past" that is hardly heard. Here, he does a flawless rendition that beats the albukm version by a long shot. Also, there's the slightly eerie instrumental "Song For Guy", done in a medley with "Your Song".

Also included is a 52 - minute documentary with interviews conducted with Elton, Bernie Taupin and Giannie Versaci, to name a few. Overall a great live dvd that has Elton in top form.

5 out of 5 stars Elton Is "The One".......2004-07-10

Being a BIG Elton fan, I had to have this dvd because he sings GREAT songs like: The one,Daniel,Sorry seems to be the hardest word,The last song(GREAT),Your Song, Song for guy,Tiny dancer, I'm still standing,And More! All Twenty songs are Great!!Plus there is a fantastic documentary about the 1992 world tour. If you are a fan of Eltons music, Even if your not you just gotta get this dvd! When I watched it for the first time I knew I had the BEST dvd Sir Elton John's EVER Made!

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Show.......2004-06-01

After finally kicking a long - time drug addiction, Elton John went on tour in 1992 to promote his new album "The One". It was one of his best tours ever. His voice was in top form, his keyboard playing was magical and he was once again just having fun being himself. Cameras were lucky enough to capture his concert in Barcelona, Spain. It captures the essence of a great Elton John live show.

The song selection is great, although I wish "Bennie And The Jets" was included. Highlights include electrifying renditions of "I'm Still Standing", "Burn Down The Mission", "Mona Lisas And Mad Hatters 1 & 2" and "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting". It was great to hear the extended versions of "Sad Songs (Say So Much)" and "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" (as if the latter wasn't long enough). His voice is especially strong on "The One", "Tiny Dancer" and "Daniel". The closing medley of "Song For Guy/Your Song" ends the dvd on a high note.

Also included is a 52 - minute documentary that features interviews with Elton, Bernie Taupin, Giovanni Versace, Davey Johnstone and others, as well as a behind - the - scenes look at how the tour came together. A great dvd. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Perfect performance but...........2004-05-07

Great concert, great location all my favorites songs Elton John At his peak But an Annoying fluctuation in audio level during the fine rendition of funeral for a friend ruined it for Me.

4 out of 5 stars Better than Madison Gardens concert.......2004-04-20

This DVD relates to a concert filmed in 1993 to promote EJ's then new album "The One". Elton's voice was much better compared to the 2000 Concert in Madison Square Gardens DVD. The tracklist is more interesting too as he has thrown is some rarities and some album tracks - whereas the 2002 Madison Square Gardens DVD is a Greatest Hits show. The other highlight of this concert is that EJ sings all his songs. On the Madison Square Gardens concert 2000 he has alot of guests on stage helping out. Ok, that's not such a bad thing, but when you go to see EJ, you want to see and hear EJ.

This DVD also contains an hour documentary on EJ which is reason enough to buy the DVD. It's a great documentary and contains some rare footage too, as well as film clips from yesteryear which I haven't seen in a long time.

The DVD also boast a nice clear image unlike the Madison Square Gardens concert (very blurry).

My review is simply to help you decide which one to buy. Or you could just buy them both.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing Recreation of Shakespeare's Ironic Comedy Performed to the Hilt by a Stellar Cast.......2006-02-02

Truly one of the most beguiling of Benjamin Britten's operas, his 1960 adaptation (with longtime partner and co-librettist Peter Pears) of Shakespeare's fanciful comedy, "A Midsummer Night's Dream", was given a highly original makeover in Canadian music director Robert Carsen's production at the 1995 Festival of Aix-en-Provence. With some surprising cinematic touches added by film director Francois Roussillon, the production has been faithfully reworked in this wonderful April 2005 staging at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. Virgin Classics has done a superb job in capturing the magic of this performance, which hopefully signals a trend toward even more such DVD packages.

Highlighting the sexual tensions of the original play on a minimalist, blue-green-dominated set, Carsen foregoes period costumes to focus on the essence of the various themes by retaining the humor while still evoking a constant aura of mystery in his translation. Anyone familiar with the play knows that Shakespeare saturated his text with twisting ironies among a diverse set of characters, and Britten creatively responds with a unique musical style for each group - the folk-like pastiche of brass for the rustic characters (i.e. the "mechanicals"); the more noble sounds of strings and woodwinds which reflect Britten's more recognized style for the lovers; and the ethereal blend of percussion, harpsichord and harps full of glissandi for the immortals. These distinctions lend musical shadings that create the ideal panorama of emotions and comic elements to pull off Shakespeare's tale.

The international cast is superb and given the multiple nationalities represented, surprisingly compatible. The ensemble starts with the extraordinary American countertenor David Daniels as the fairy king, Oberon. In a relatively understated performance despite his resplendent green attire and matching green hair, he commands the stage with the right mix of unbridled romanticism and searing malevolence. Indicative of the part as originated by Alfred Dellar, the lower register of his voice is used splendidly, especially on his key Act I number, "I know a bank where the wild thyme blows". Even though he is known far more as a Handelian, Daniels's obvious affinity for Purcell (as evidenced on his recital discs, "Serenade" and "A Quiet Thing") serves him well here. Spanish soprano Ofelia Sala offers a full-bodied Tytania with a lovely voice that encompasses the coloratura of the role and a comic deftness to move fluidly from impervious to smitten as Bottom's unintended paramour. A high point is her delightful version of Act II's "Be kind and courteous to this gentleman".

As the first pair of lovers, Lysander and Hermia, Canadian tenor Gordon Gietz and American mezzo-soprano Deanne Meek exude passion effortlessly, sing beautifully together and provide the grounding necessary for their later comic scenes. German soprano Brigitte Hahn and with an especially dark timbre, English baritone William Dazeley, appear as the more comical second pair, Helena and Demetrius. The dynamic interaction of these four, whether quarreling or fleeing from each other due to Puck's intrusive magic, produces an engaging romp, all the while making Britten's music vibrant with emotional fervor and clear diction. English veterans from the 2004 Glyndebourne production fill the remaining principal roles. Bass-baritone Peter Rose makes a fine, subtle Bottom with a strong voice. Managing to remain expressive even in a full-head donkey mask, he lends an endearing quality and makes the most of his recital of his dream of love with Tytania. Proving a boisterous band, the mechanicals work well as an ensemble with tenor Christopher Gillett an appropriately naive Flute and bass Henry Waddington a lively albeit controlling Quince.

In the speaking role of Puck, the physically antic Emil Wolk is not the young figure one generally envisions in the role but a mischievous, middle-aged sprite who plays with the rhythms of Shakespeare's prose a little too freely (the cadences feel somewhat off). Costumed as green-hued gentleman's gentlemen with mustaches, the chorus of fairies is played liltingly by the Escolania de Montserrat under choirmaster Joaquim Pique. Michael Levine's strikingly bare but highly dramatic-looking set consists of a deep blue backdrop with just a crescent moon and most of the stage taken by a large platform laid out as a huge bed covered with a green bedspread. Two huge pillows are revealed underneath the bedcovers, and they become multi-purposed as river banks for the lovers to set themselves and as Tytania's bed at the end of Act I.

The bed theme remains constant throughout the opera with, for example, three beds suspended dramatically in mid-air, two containing the pairs of lovers and one containing Tytania and Bottom. They ascend and descend depending on the plot turns. Lighting is also used dramatically, especially in the Act II entrance of Oberon and Puck. This is a visual as well as aural treat, and under Harry Bicket's expert baton, the Symphony Orchestra of the Gran Theatre del Liceu performs the music with dazzling dexterity and disciplined pacing. The 160-minute opera is presented on two discs with Acts I and II on the first and Act III on the second, and the package also includes a small pamphlet with credits, color photos and scene titles. Subtitles are available, though the credits in the recording itself are strictly in French.
