When 13-year-old Jessie (Denise Miller) goes to the Eddie Nova Guitar Institute, she's stunned to discover her teacher is Michael (Rex Smith), a 17-year-old aspiring local musician she'd just seen play with his rock band at the local shopping mall--and with whom she was instantly smitten. Through the grace of makeup, Jessie can pass for 16, and she tells Michael that's her age when he gives her a ride home from class one week. They start to flirt. When Michael invites her to a band rehearsal, they kiss for the first time; when he invites her to a drive-in movie, things start moving just a little too fast, and Jessie has to quickly decide whether or not to confess. Sooner or Later is full of 1970s schmaltz--Michael's songs sound like a cross between Electric Light Orchestra and the Starland Vocal Band--but it's also an extremely well written and deftly acted coming-of-age story. Both leads are excellent and the supporting cast is full of smart character actors: Judd Hirsch, Barbara Feldon (better known as "99" on Get Smart!), and Lynn Redgrave. What could be an overdone teen potboiler is given humor and realism; it treats young love seriously but with perspective, and without a trace of condescension. A truly charming and enjoyable film. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Sooner or Later.......2007-05-22

This movie is from my youth and still reminds me that love has no age limit. Rex smith is great for his first movie. Great movie even for today.
Good music too.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Love Story.......2007-03-04

Every time I hear - You Take My Breathe Away - on "muzak" I remember this movie of years ago. I finally rented it and it's been what 25 or so years since it came out? Quality certainly does pass the test of time. The music is still great - and "love" never grows old.

5 out of 5 stars Your Memory Doesn't Let You Down.......2007-03-03

I so vividly remember seeing this film on a Sunday night back '78 when I was in 10th grade, and the next day I and all of my friends were talking about it. Some films do not age well -- but this one is the exception. Like a reviewer stated above, you remember it like it was yesterday and 30 years later, it still brings a big smile to my face. It was smart and timely and I'm sure all of us girls remember going through our love with the "older" guy in high school. It's sweet and innocent and makes me wish I was 15 years old all over again!

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING...AFTER ALL THESE YEARS!.......2007-01-19

WOW, I CAN'T BELIEVE THAT YOU HAVE THIS MOVIE ON DVD. WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, A FRIEND AND I READ THE BOOKS BEFORE THE MOVIE CAME OUT. IT WAS OUR FIRST TASTE OF GROWING UP AND WHEN THE MOVIE CAME OUT, WE WATCHED IT OVER AND OVER AGAIN. I STILL AT 33 YEARS OLD WATCH THE MOVE OVER AND OVER AGAIN!!!
GREAT MOVIE!!!

5 out of 5 stars Teenage Angst......But in a Good Way.......2007-01-13

Man! I was 15 or 16 when this movie came out and my sister must've been 13 or 14 but both of us were GLUED to our television. Yes, we have seen the embodiment of teenage girl lust and his name is Rex Smith a.k.a. Michael Skye!. My sister and I drooled over him and dreamed about him for ages. We could both identify with all of the emotions, confusion, exhiliration, and lust that Jesse was going through. My sister is married now with 2 teenaged daughters. Imagine my surprise when she showed me this movie on DVD......I borrowed it and NEVER gave it back, she finally told me that I could keep it (oh yeah, like she had a choice!) Now I see this movie for sale on Amazon and I know what she'll be getting for her birhtday this year!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good BBMak DVD.......2006-09-05

This is a pretty good BBMak DVD. It contains interviews with the band, behind the scenes stuff, TV clips, their first two music videos, and concert performances. The only reason I gave it four stars is because of the audio quality of the concert performances - the acoustics of the building they were in did not get picked up very well by the recording equipment, which makes those recordings come across as being amateurish rather than professional. Otherwise I definitely suggest buying this DVD, especially if you are a BBMak fan.

3 out of 5 stars Great DVD...but for the sound quality........2006-05-22

Ok, don't get me wrong. I LOVE BBMak!! I really do, and this DVD had some great interviews, clips, music videos and tons of music. But a LOT of the sound quality, from certain shows, pretty much...um...how do I put this nice? Sucked like a "Hoover!
I would give this DVD 5 stars for content. There were a few songs sung I would KILL to have on a Cd, but aren't. And one really amazing song that is done on the pipes, with the other two guys backing up with some fierce guitar. Doing something like a jig. Very cool!

But the sound! Ick!!! Some of the performances were in a building that had all the acoustics of a tin can, in a box. And those great songs I would love to hear on Cd, are too scratchy or muffled to really hear how fantastic the guys singing is. It's like listening to something with a bucket over your head.

Conclusion: Get this DVD if you love BBMak. And for anyone out there thinking of reissuing this DVD, can we please get the sound cleaned up a bit?!

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for any BBMak fan!.......2002-03-21

If you're a BBMak fan, than this is a must-have for you! This awesome DVD not only has live performances and music videos, but also includes exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, interviews, band-member profiles, pictures, and more! What could possibly be more entertaining than Mark Barry playing the pennywhistle with his nose or Christian Burns serenading to a squirrel? Great footage of cutie Ste McNally is a plus, too! The DVD includes a live performance of "More Than Words", a song that isn't available on their album, "Sooner or Later". Not only all of that, but you also get to hear some up-coming songs the guys are working on, such as "Save Me Tonight". So get out there and get yourself a copy of "BBMak: Sooner and Later - Our First Year in America," it's a great buy and you certainly won't regret it! :)

5 out of 5 stars Best DVD.......2001-06-29

This is a cool band and DVD. You got to check out this video cause these guys are for real. They're just not a boy band, they're a band that sings and plays their own instruments. They're also really cute, especially Ste! Also, there are a couple music videos in the DVD I've never seen and now I own all the videos.

    Product Description

DVD, Color, 94 min, Full Screen. Directed by Juerg Neuenschwander It dwells on parents with their son, who died a few hours after his birth; on an old man getting married shortly before his death; on a teenager losing his body and finally his life; on a young man rebelling against his death; on family members awakening from their numbness, laughing and crying; on a gardener in the cemetery carefully arranging flowers; on the small peephole through which one can see the furnace in the crematorium; on the tomb, where the grave-diggers shovel dirt on the coffin. Sooner or Later captures ordinary acts, which in the face of death become a ritual, and gives space to the subtle, nearly invisible gestures and movements, which make the suffering and insecurities more bearable: caressing a cat, a handshake or a fleeting glance; pictures and moments in death and grief, which we avoid in every day life, feeling insecure, fearful or ashamed. Sooner or Later does not deal with hope for eternal life, but with the search for the nearly invisible stops on the way to death and through the grieving process. It is not about escaping, but about watching and examining ones own mortality. Sooner or Later tells about the universality of the only certitude in human life. Whether in the Emmental or in Tibet, whether at home or in a hospital, the final farewell to persons and to life is a difficult and painful experience everywhere. But there is no escape from ones own transience anywhere.
