A box-office smash in England, About a Boy went on to charm the world as another fine adaptation (following High Fidelity) of a popular Nick Hornby novel. While High Fidelity transplanted its London charm to Chicago, this irresistible comedy was directed by Americans Chris and Paul Weitz (American Pie) with its British pedigree intact. Better yet, Hugh Grant is perfectly cast as Will, a self-absorbed trust-fund slacker who tries to improve his romantic odds by preying on desperate single mothers. His cynical strategy backfires when he recruits the misfit son (Nicholas Hoult) of a suicidal mother (Toni Collette) to pose as his own son, thus proving his parental prowess to his latest single-mom target (Rachel Weisz). The kid has a warming effect on this ultimate cad, and what could have been a sappy tearjerker turns into a subtle, frequently hilarious portrait of familial quirks and elevated self-esteem. From start to finish, it's a genuine treat. --Jeff Shannon

Hugh Grant shines..........2007-06-16
...as a curmudgeon with a heart. A must see!
One of my Top 10 Favorite movies of all time.......2007-05-29
Despite the fact I am emotionally shallow and somewhat stupid, I think this movie is brilliant and a classic.
Touching, but lacking.......2007-05-28
About a boy is a nice, and touching movie. There is some great comedy too. I am a huge Grant fan so it's would almost be impossible for me not to like something he's in. He's so endearing.
However, I guess I am not a Collette fan because I almost never like anything she's in. I don't really get her comedy, and find her odd and misaplaced in most films. Her character her makes me somewhat uncomfortable for some reason. Mostly, the movie just moves rather slow.
It's still a feel-good film and I am glad I saw it. Just wouldn't buy it.
One of the best films! So rare with the junk that's coming out today!.......2007-05-12
This movie is SMART, sweet, cute, and HILLARIOUS, with great music, great acting, especially Toni Collette (underrated!), and the boy who plays Marcus. I think he has the potential to do big things! Buy this movie-trust me, you'll love it!!! One note--This was a book first and I have it. If you read the book it has a lot of other parts that are missing from the movie and that are hillarious. So, if they didn't cut those parts this movie would have been beyond HILLARIOUS! A big part that is missing from the movie is the bully Ely, who Marcus befriends. I think in the book, they run away after Ely hears of Kurt Cobain's suicide. There's just so many funny parts that weren't included, so read the book too! Nick Hornby makes us laugh while teaching us about life. He is a comic genius!
Charming light hearted fluff.......2007-03-26
3.5 stars. If this hadn't been an adapation of a novel, I would have sworn Will was written just for Hugh Grant. I don't think this film would've work with any other actor. With strong performances by supporting cast, viewers are entertained watching this confirmed bachlor and island unto himself believer, get dragged into a young boy's life-only to discover what truely defines happiness. Recommended.

DVD's that don't play on Australian players.......2007-04-08
I purchased to box sets of DVD's (both for gifts) and when I treid one of the DVD's out to make sure they were ok they did not play and the player said to "check your area". To say that I am bitterly dissappointed would be an understatement!! Not only was it a complete waste of money but also a sad reflection on Amazon for not notifying the purchaser of the requirements needed to use the product. Poor Poor Poor
I like it!.......2007-03-11
My husband and I saw the film "Love Actually "on Feb.14th,we all like it.
Funny and Romantic.......2007-02-14
These movies were purchased for my wife. She loves stuff like this and is a fan of Hugh Grant and Colin Firth. She thought the movies were funny and romantic...definitely a woman thing! She has already watched them a couple of times.

All 8 films are of roughly equivalent quality (GOOD).......2007-03-25
I can't point to one or the other and say it doesn't belong. All deliver the titillating, exciting goods. All the stories end just when you wish they would continue. Is that a weakness? The answer depends on whether you like short stories or not. Presumably, if you're browsing this collection, you like short vignettes of gay life. Now, keep in mind, these are all young, good-looking, even model-quality gays. More along the lines of fantasy than realism. And it's all about hooking up, sex, rather than the more complicated or dramatic aspects of mature adult life. Is it worth watching? Yes. Is it worth $[...]? That seems a bit steeper than comparable straight films. I would buy a used copy, myself. Or get a rental. Film distribution companies are always hitting the gay audience with higher prices. Only because it's difficult to find these things at, say, [...].

BOYS BRIEFS 3: BETWEEN THE BOYS"
Hooking Up
Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride
Picture This Entertainment has released another volume of short gay films in its "Boys Briefs" collection. This one contains eight shorts all under the theme of "Hooking Up". Here is a new look at the gay dating experience and it is fun and refreshing. In fact, I would say it is the best of the collection thus far aside from the first two shorts; "Cabalerno" and "Shakespeare's Sonnets" both of which left me cold. The other six, however, well make up for their deficiencies.
The "Boys Briefs" compilations began in 1999 and what makes Picture This unique is that before every film there is original footage giving us an idea of which each short film is about. They are also linked by a common theme; this one being dating and the also newly released "Boys Briefs 4" which I have yet to see is about guys who hustle.
"Cabalerno" is a coming of age short, so to speak. A clumsy young guy films a good looking young skater as he performs his skating maneuvers. As the "cameraman" comes to terns with his newly found sexuality, we are given a short view of his sexual awakening. "Shakespeare's Sonnets" features a young fop at Harvard who entices his young schoolmate to leave the bonds of conformity. I think what bothered me about there two films was that they had the opportunity to be brilliant--the seeds were there, but somehow the ideas were not fully realized making both films feel unfinished.
On the other hand "David" is amazing. A young good looking mute lusts after an unemployed businessman and the awakening they experience s exhilarating. It was amazing t se how much can be accomplished when no words are spoken and age difference is overlooked. It is just a beautiful and loving short film.
"Boys Grammar" to me was the highlight of the compilation. Through the use of violence in an exclusive prep school, two boys find each other and love. As short as it is, this movie packs a wallop as the young guys suddenly accept themselves for who they really are. It is graphic and a disturbing look at the ritual of hazing.
"Latch Key" is another winner. Two brothers come to terms with their adolescent sexuality. While the older brother is upstairs with his girlfriend having his first sexual experience, younger brother is downstairs with a classmate watching straight porn and mutually masturbating each other. As they are both about to experience their first reciprocal sexual climax, Mom returns from work and both stop their activity. The ending is a super surprise that you do not want to miss.
"Little Boy Blue" stars Malcolm Gets of "Caroline in the City" and "Adam and Steve" and is a study of what loneliness can drive a person to do. While mourning the death of his lover, Gets has unprotected sex with a stranger who is obviously only using him. Almost scary in what it has to say, this short is extremely well done.
Remember when you could not keep your hands off of your first boyfriend (or your brother)? "Between the Boys" is about just that. It is very clever and hits close to home.
Finally there is "Post Mortem" in which two ex-lovers meet years later to have a look at what went wrong between them and to decide how to move on. I found this to be very sweet and tender but painful. It is bittersweet and hopeful and allows the viewer to decide how t ends.
Included on the DVD are interviews with the eight filmmakers who created the movies and this alone makes the entire compilation worthwhile. I really enjoyed the movies and am looking forward to the fourth DVD of the compilation. All in all, this compilation is an extremely satisfying experience and a welcome addition to the already existing collections of gay shorts. Get a copy and enjoy.

Very Nice Compilation........2006-11-17
With the exception of the first two works, this anthology of short films is really quite good. Several are real standouts, particularly the hugely funny and entertaining "Latch Key." The filmmaker who did that one has s a very bright future indeed. But, other films on the disc are also quite striking. This is well worth your investment - the perfect compilation of films to show to friends after making a batch of popcorn or retiring from a nice dinner.

Description
A cowardly king offers a young man who isn't afraid of anything all the riches in the land if he rid the castle of a ghost.
Customer Reviews:
Loved it!!.......2006-12-27
I think the title should have been "The Boy Who Got Kicked out of his home to find out about the shivers". Besides this, I loved every minute of this tale! It was my first time checking out this one, and I thought it was fun, especially at the end. It has everything-fun, horror, romance, etc. Peter MacNicol is kind of cute, too. I loved Christopher Lee-he is totally magnetic, with a commanding presence, plus an even powerful voice. All in all, great job!
Fairie Tale Not Just For Kids.......2005-09-01
This is a great little flick. Children and adults alike will enjoy this feature. This scary story with touches of satire doesn't disappoint with good acting, good writing, and set design that's visual appealing considering the budget of the flick.
A young Peter Macnicol as Martin, Christopher Lee as the king, and Vincent Price as the narrator make this a quality show.
I loved this movie when I was a kid, and I ended up buying it as an adult. Watching it again now I enjoyed the jokes and some of the satire that I was too young to understand when I was a kid.
The Shivers.......2005-02-12
Arguably one of the worst of the Faerie Tale Theatre series by Shelly Duvall. I don't see why People are saying this one is scary? this is far from scary. It would be laughable, but it's just to boring. It moves slow, and doesn't really do anything until it's already half way through the flick or more. I like to collect this series so regardless I am happy I got this one. I just got this one quicker than I should of based on certain reviews about it. I should have considered another faerie tale before getting this one. I have it now, had to get it sooner or later anyway I suppose.
A Graveyard Smash!!!.......2005-01-19
Arguably the best of Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre series, "The Boy Who Left Home..." is a macabre delight. Dragonslayer's Peter Macnicol is smart as the fearless boy and Christopher Lee is perfect as the son of Vlad the Impaler. An obvious homage to Lee's own British Hammer Horror films of the 50's with the narration of another genre favorite Vincent Price adding to the fun. Growing up in the 80's, I was entralled with the set design, actors and dry humor of this sensational series. Two or three aren't enough; buy all 26 of these priceless gems or buy the 4 disk set coming in January of 2005.
Hillarious, will be your favorite.......2004-11-09
From the antics his family goes through to try to scare him, to the real ghosts of a haunted castle, "the boy who left home to find out about the shivers" is not phased. Granted, this is one of the scarrier faerie tale theatres, so maybe not good for children under 5 or 6, but will quickly become everyone's favorite episode.

This is not the hottest soft porn movie I have ever seen, but it is definitely one of the best. The fact that the movie is made up of four stories--based on real letters telling the stories of how these four different relationships began and what their status was at the time the letter was written--adds a real human element that is sadly lacking in many of the soft porn films out there. Out of the four stories only one of them had a sort of unhappy ending, so that made me happy because I am a romantic and love happy endings. One of the stories was a gay version of "Pretty Woman," which makes me wonder if the person, who sent the letter in, was just having fun writing a short story, but that is totally irrelevant, it was a very sweet story and I enjoyed it very much. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who is interested in this kind of movie. Mike Esser, who directed the movie and narrated the stories, has made some of the best soft pornography I have ever seen. Out of all the soft porn videos that I have seen, I have, by far, enjoyed his the best.
Disappointed about the Flic.......2000-08-29
"Mad about the Boy" is a major disappointment. It is nothing more than Brit Soft Porn (little show, no go!)with a lame attempt at socially redeeming value. After giving you up front definitions of 'mad' and 'boy' you discover only 3 of the nine fit the definition of boy. In fact, I do not remember seeing the cover boy in the flic. Maybe it was a difference in positioning and make-up. And as to 'mad' - it only fits the purchaser.
The first of the 4 scenes, Jamie's Story, is a short pornographic remake/premake of "Get Real". Watch "Get Real" instead. Daniel's story would have been touching, if it hadn't been for the heavy handiness in its telling. More of a slap than a touch. Tim & Phillip were young men, but the stranger was not. It would have been passable without the stranger. And Tom's story was a too late warning about buying this DVD.
The constant use of slow motion and trailing images to make up for the lack of true passionate content was distracting to say the least. Got bored with the same effects used over and over. There are even voice-overs from the narrator to make up for the lack of real dialog.
What I expected was four gay coming of age stories, slightly erotic but definitely compassionate. What I got was far less, a disappointment.
Pass on this one!
Highly Erotic.......2000-07-17
Nine of Europe's most beautiful guys in four stories of love and sex. Four highly erotic and emotionally charged tales of love and sex. Four vignettes focus on obsessive love and star nine of Europe's most beautiful guys. From the director of THE CHAIN REACTION. JAIME Jaime's gay and studying at college. He's on the local gay scene and is secure in his sexuality. Jason is the college stud - head of football and rugby and is a major hit with the girls. Jaime obviously fancies him, but knows it's pure fantasy or is it... TIM & PHILIP Tim & Philip are life long best friends. They hang around together and have never questioned each others sexuality. That's until Tim arrives home early one day to find Philip in bed with a man. Tim's shocked but surprisingly turned on... DANIEL Daniel is a hooker working the London scene. He makes the ultimate mistake of falling in love with one of his clients. He thinks he's blown it when he refuses to take money one night - but only finds the client feels the same way about him, but what problems this affair stirs up... TOM Only son Tom visits his family's country home to find the old gardener has been replaced by a local village lad. Tom is obsessed by Mark, the hunky new gardener. After some passionate sexual interludes, Tom gets a nasty shock when a blackmail note turns up... Approximately 82 minutes. "Four erotic tales inspired by viewers' letters comprise this rather well-made outing. Jamie's in love with classmate Jason, who beats him up by day and beats him off by night. Daniel's a street hustler who falls for one of his johns. Tim discovers that he and his best buddy aren't so straight after all. And Tom becomes obsessed with his father's studly new gardener. Softcore fun with lots of touchy-feely , this one could easily wind up on the "Playgirl Channel" - if there was such a thing. " --GAY SPECIALTY Reviews
