"It's good to be me," says Gene Simmons, and the Kiss bassist-frontman could hardly find a better vehicle for himself than Family Jewels, the first season of which (13 episodes, plus extras) is presented here on two discs. There has rarely been anyone as shamelessly and gleefully skilled at self-promotion as Simmons, who makes P.T. Barnum look like a shrinking violet and pro football player Terrell Owens seem modest. Whether he is glorifying or parodying his Rock God image (the show features both in roughly equal measure), he knows that either way, it's all about him--and it was ever thus for a guy whose success has always depended at least as much, if not more, on image and marketing as on music.Fast-paced, tongue-in-cheek, and just naughty enough, the 22-minute episodes keep it short and simple, focusing on Simmons' principal preoccupations: his disdain for matrimony (although he and former Playboy playmate Shannon Tweed have been together for decades, they've never married), and, of course, his legendary reputation as a sex machine (the current estimate is 4,600 conquests). Thus we find Gene going to a Hooters opening in Las Vegas; conducting auditions for his latest scam, a video series called "Sexercise"; weekending at a health spa with Tweed, who refuses to sleep with him unless he drops a few pounds; and appearing on a Playboy Channel show with porn stars like Jenna Jameson while Tweed and/or their two kids (teens Nick and Sophie), who love to goof on Dad, are at home setting fire to his rock star pants or some such shenanigans. The existence of a blooper reel among the bonus material hardly supports the notion that the show is unscripted and spontaneous; Simmons' day with an almost frighteningly obsessive Kiss fan, during which he confides to Tweed that at times the adulation "just becomes too much," provides one of the few "real" moments. Little matter. Despite his bluster, or more likely because of it, Simmons is good-natured, smart, and genuinely likeable; so are his kids, who are kinda snarky (but then, what teenager isn't?) but seem well-adjusted and a lot brighter than Ozzy Osbourne's sullen brood. If there's one obvious omission, it's that so little of Family Jewels has anything to do with music (a ten-minute bonus feature called "Lost Songs" is about it). Then again, those uninterested in rock 'n' rolling all night and partying every day may consider that a major selling point. --Sam Graham

"Rock god, Demon or Dad? Who says you have to choose?
Take an unprecedented look into the (surprisingly normal) life of a rock `n roll icon with GENE SIMMONS FAMILY JEWELS. The new real-life A&E family series steps into the home of the legendary, tongue-wagging rocker demon of KISS and Shannon Tweed, former Playmate of the Year, actress, model and mom. Gene and Shannon have been happily UNmarried for 23 years and have no plans to get married anytime soon. Their kids, Nick and Sophie, are surprisingly charming, well-behaved teenagers dealing with the trials and tribulations of adolescence, even though Mom and Dad are like no one else's parents on earth. Yes, Gene is a world-famous rock star and multi-media magnate, but he's also the kind of dad who brings Gatorade to his daughter's soccer games and stands in the front row of his son's rock band when they play gigs.
Get to know a side of Gene that he has kept hidden from the world at large until now, and see how the most non-traditional family in America manages to make normal life work under the oddest of circumstances.

This 10-DVD boxed set is a delight for anyone afflicted with a susceptibility to the fractured antics of Jerry Lewis, or "Le Roi du Crazy" to the French. This set emphasizes Lewis's busy period after the breakup with Dean Martin, when he was exerting more influence over his vehicles (six of the titles are directed by Jerry himself) and almost single-handedly keeping Paramount Pictures propped up with his box-office take. The set curiously includes one of the Martin-Lewis pictures, 1953's The Stooge, which has echoes of the real-life vibe between Jerry and Dino. The other titles include Lewis's 1957 solo starring debut, The Delicate Delinquent, and his directing bow, The Bellboy (1960). The latter is an often-ingenious and plotless collection of gags with Jerry as a bellhop in Miami Beach's Fountainebleau Hotel. His character doesn't speak (making the connection with silent cinema more pointed), but in one uproarious sequence the obnoxious movie star "Jerry Lewis" comes to visit the hotel.
The Ladies Man puts Lewis alone in a boarding house full of women. This film's bizarre sexual politics (and its amazing cut-away set) helps explain why French critics such as Jean-Luc Godard consider Lewis a cinematic genius--Godard actually borrowed the cut-away set idea for his film Tout va bien. The Errand Boy is a cascade of gags strung together on the set of "Paramutual Pictures," a movie studio that employs Lewis's klutzy gofer; it features one of Jerry's best musical miming routines. The Patsy is another good one, as nebbish Jerry is drafted into impersonating a famous deceased celebrity, but by 1965's The Family Jewels the inspiration is flagging a bit.
Two of the titles are directed by Lewis's mentor, Frank Tashlin. Cinderfella works a sentimental variation on the fairy tale; it's slow and at times mawkish, but some of Lewis's physical stuff is top-notch. The Disorderly Orderly is livelier, with a hospital setting and some of Jerry's most inspired babbling. The box also includes Lewis's acknowledged high point, The Nutty Professor, in its special-edition form. Its Jekyll-and-Hyde story is still the funniest and weirdest premise Lewis ever had. There are other Lewis films out there, but this box is definitely the cream of the career. If some of the jokes haven't aged well (and those who can't stand his mugging won't be convinced even by this set), Lewis still seems a more interesting filmmaker than he's usually given credit for. Extras include some disappointing commentaries with Lewis and Steve Lawrence, plus a smattering of outtakes, some of them funny and/or revealing of Lewis's directing technique. --Robert Horton

Mr. Bean meets Mr. Bond in Johnny English, a spy spoof that skewers the genre with Rowan Atkinson's trademark brand of veddy-British slapstick. It's a bit half-baked as a wannabe franchise, but Atkinson's creation of a new screen persona is just promising enough to warrant a sequel, despite critics' complaints that Austin Powers had already exhausted the spy-spoof's potential. Poppycock! Atkinson's gift for physical and, in this case, even verbal humor will surely please his devoted fans, even when a rather tepidly comedic screenplay prevents the British funnyman from reaching new heights of absurdity. As bumbling superspy Johnny English, who gains top-level MI-7 clearance after inadvertently causing a colleague's demise, Atkinson breathes life into gags that are too familiar to earn such an amusing revival. With John Malkovich as a smarmy Frenchman determined to overthrow the British monarchy, and Natalie Imbruglia as Johnny's comely comrade-in-arms, this slight but enjoyable comedy gives Atkinson plenty of opportunity to mug it up as only he can. --Jeff ShannonCustomer Reviews:

Description
It's always been quite rare to see AC/DC - unless you go to their concerts. Television appearances, and later music videos, have always been a necessary evil to this band of nononsense rockers. Consequently, only their early years were documented on television - mostly in Australia and Europe - and when the time came to switch to promotional video clips, the band always made their own and gave them the appearance of a live show. But they've also never wasted an opportunity to make a big statement with their clips. From singer Bon Scott dressing like a school girl (to Angus Young's school boy) and smoking(!) on their first major television appearance, to the giant rocking spectacle of the "Big Gun" video (with guest appearance by Arnold Schwarzenegger), AC/DC has always been larger than life and their timeless brand of rock and roll has been as big on screen as it has off. Now for the first time Epic Records is proud to announce the first ever compilation of AC/DC videos from all parts of their storied career. Starting in 1975 on Australian TV's Countdown show through the Spanish TV clips filmed just ten days before Bon Scott's death - the first great era of the band is chronicled on Disc One. Disc Two starts with the promo videos for Back In Black (several never before available) and sees many of the 80's and 90's clips on DVD for the first time. This is truly a monumental collection of clips from one of the world's greatest bands - all completely remastered for DVD with the same care as the Epic CD remasters and the Live At Donington DVD.Customer Reviews:

Good classic anime Tv series.......2006-03-17
The English dub is just fine. Lupin rocks!.......2004-02-23
For you NON-otaku who are thinking of skipping this one because of what was said about Pioneer's dub cast, here's what you need to keep in mind about some hardcore "otaku" anime fans...even if the dub was perfect, they'd find some reason to whine. Hence, reviews like the one below. Remember that before you take that review too much to heart. I listened to the English dub and the original Japanese track with an open mind and open ears, and I think Tony Oliver(Lupin), Lex Lang (Goemon), Richard Epcar(Jigen) and Michelle Ruff(Fujiko) did an excellent job! The only thing that threw me off are the modern day pop-culture references that have made their way into too many of Pioneer's Lupin releases. But seeing how the original was made in the late 60's and early 70's, staying too close to the time period which it was made would have dated the series more than the animation has. But that's a minor quibble in what is a fine series overall.
Oh, and if you ARE a "subs rule, dubs drool" anime fan, then let me clue you in...this edition, like all of the Pioneer Lupin series, comes with subtitles AND the original Japanese track. See? Everybody wins.
Lupin the thiiiiiiirrrrrrd!!!
Funny still, but AVOID THE ENGLISH DUB AT ALL COSTS.......2004-01-22
It's horrible. Pure awful. The voices simply ruin the entire English version. Why was Tony Oliver cast as Lupin? He gives the master thief an awful, hi-pitched voice, and makes him sound like a complete idiot. Richard Epcar, who did a great Goemon in Cagliostro, butchers Jigen. He sounds like he's trying to imitate Chris Sabat's version of him. The same goes for Goemon's voice actor(I forget his name), who sounds like he's imitating Mike McFarland. And the awful, dumbed down lines. "Oh, yes, I had a case like that before, I kept a violin in it!" Ugh. I think it's odd, if the series is supposed to be aimed for adults, why is it dubbed as if it were for three-year olds!? Overall, the English dub is to be avoided. Don't listen to this hunk of garbage! The Japanese voices are MUCH better!
The DVD's great, but the bad English-voice nearly ruins it.
It's Lupin and funny stuff as always.......2003-07-17

LANGUAGES: German (Dolby Digital 2.0), English (Subtitles), WIDESCREEN (1.85:1), SYNOPSIS: A shaggy-dog yarn given a loopy, very offbeat flavor by direction and performances, Robert Schwentke's sophomore outing, "The Family Jewels," couldn't be more different from his umbrous serial-killer thriller "Tattoo." Despite its many qualities, the black comedy, about an ambitious young guy who first loses a testicle to cancer and then has a ball trying to steal it back from the hospital's path lab, looks a surer bet as a curio on the fest circuit than as a regular item in offshore hardtops.
