"It's good to be me," says Gene Simmons, and the Kiss bassist-frontman could hardly find a better vehicle for himself than Family Jewels, the first season of which (13 episodes, plus extras) is presented here on two discs. There has rarely been anyone as shamelessly and gleefully skilled at self-promotion as Simmons, who makes P.T. Barnum look like a shrinking violet and pro football player Terrell Owens seem modest. Whether he is glorifying or parodying his Rock God image (the show features both in roughly equal measure), he knows that either way, it's all about him--and it was ever thus for a guy whose success has always depended at least as much, if not more, on image and marketing as on music.

Fast-paced, tongue-in-cheek, and just naughty enough, the 22-minute episodes keep it short and simple, focusing on Simmons' principal preoccupations: his disdain for matrimony (although he and former Playboy playmate Shannon Tweed have been together for decades, they've never married), and, of course, his legendary reputation as a sex machine (the current estimate is 4,600 conquests). Thus we find Gene going to a Hooters opening in Las Vegas; conducting auditions for his latest scam, a video series called "Sexercise"; weekending at a health spa with Tweed, who refuses to sleep with him unless he drops a few pounds; and appearing on a Playboy Channel show with porn stars like Jenna Jameson… while Tweed and/or their two kids (teens Nick and Sophie), who love to goof on Dad, are at home setting fire to his rock star pants or some such shenanigans. The existence of a blooper reel among the bonus material hardly supports the notion that the show is unscripted and spontaneous; Simmons' day with an almost frighteningly obsessive Kiss fan, during which he confides to Tweed that at times the adulation "just becomes too much," provides one of the few "real" moments. Little matter. Despite his bluster, or more likely because of it, Simmons is good-natured, smart, and genuinely likeable; so are his kids, who are kinda snarky (but then, what teenager isn't?) but seem well-adjusted and a lot brighter than Ozzy Osbourne's sullen brood. If there's one obvious omission, it's that so little of Family Jewels has anything to do with music (a ten-minute bonus feature called "Lost Songs" is about it). Then again, those uninterested in rock 'n' rolling all night and partying every day may consider that a major selling point. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars I gave it five stars!.......2007-06-29

I am NOT a Kiss fan, never have been, and probably never will be. I never knew that much about Gene Simmons, much less Shannon Tweed, but I LOVE this show! It's very entertaining, and a lot of fun! Yes they are ultra rich, but for all their money, and their UN-MARRIED life, they are probably more normal than most folks in Beverly Hills. I like the kids, and the bantering that goes on between them all. Aunt Tracy is a blast! It's so much better than the Osbornes who are what I call the three D's, disrespectful, dysfunctional, and deplorable! I see nothing of them in this family. Gene and Shannon run a much more respectable household. Gotta love em!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-05-25

Gene Simmons Family Jewels is a great show. It's interesting to see what goes on in his life. He is a God rock star who is respected by the public, he is a savvy businessman, and, yet he is a pussycat at home with his family. Shannon Tweed, Nick, and Sophie (the kids) are hilarious as well. All in all, it is a great behind the scenes look at an American Icon.

2 out of 5 stars I just can't figure it!!!.......2007-05-10

I just can't figure out why so many people keep on praising this show. I mean, I watch it; and do find it more watchable than the Ozbournes. And I do admit that it is entertaining, but I dunno what's wrong with everyone. Are people hypnotized or something? Too blind to see some realistic truth too.... I mean, this show may be a little more constructive than the Ozbournes, but it has many things in common with it too.

Like the fact that neither of Mr Simmons kids, just like Ozzy's, are all that bright. I mean both Nick Simmons and Jack Ozbourne act like they've got nostrils in their cerrebelums (forgive my spelling). Anyone who says Nick Simmons is bright is having some denial issues! The guy just stands around acting all goofy, strutting his long hair and having fun, but his only true purpose on that show is to make snide remarks and provide comedy relief. Sophie, does not have much personality in any respect at all!!! The only thing she seems good for on the show is to show her big boobs around and make her father, the big HYPOCRITE, go stir-crazy over her hanging out with guys. Like what does Mr Simmons expect, his daughter is an exception or something? Come-on? She's a chick too, Mr Simmons, like any other--with big boobs to boot!

Imagine that!--the biggest womanizer on earth trying to turn his daughter into--what?--the Virgin Mary or something? Makes no sense really. I dunno; that Gene Simmons just don't make no sense at all. His kids are spoiled rotten; he don't seem to care much. And he lets them get away with just about everything--just like Ozbourne. At the same time, he's a big hypocrite, he talks all that talk of "hard work" and "doing it all himself", and there are his kids going around and just having a ball with all his money, living in that big mansion. He truly never "lays down the law" at all or invoke any ounce of discipline on them, other than to harass Sophie any time she hangs out with guys. Like who does he think he is really, Al Bundy?

It's still a fun show; but being the realist that I am, I just can't bring myself to give it too much praise.

5 out of 5 stars You Will Never See These Kids in Rehab.......2007-04-26

All I can say is that this show is delightful, funny and surprisingly interesting. Not being a KISS fan and knowing little about Gene Simmons apparently didn't affect my enjoyment of this show. It shows you what good and responsible parenting does for kids. In a way, it's not fair to compare these kids to the Osbornes who as much as they love each other, live in chaos with a father who cannot (due to his own drug addition), set a good example for his kids. Do you think Gene Simmons would allow one of his children to drop out of high school? Not in this family.

5 out of 5 stars I *love* this show!.......2007-03-28

This show absolutely cracks me up! Gene and his pajamas... I want those pajamas! :)
Nick is classic... he has a great sense of humor, he's a good lookin' guy AND wears a size 14 shoe! He's got it goin' on! :X
Sophie has a beautiful voice. She needs to pursue that...
and Shannon... gotta love her... who else could put up with Gene for all these years?
Anyway... I recommend this to anyone, young AND old! (I'm in the latter category) I'm not so sure about the geezer crew, though. They might not appreciate the wonderful humor of it all. :)

"Rock god, Demon or Dad? Who says you have to choose?

Take an unprecedented look into the (surprisingly normal) life of a rock `n roll icon with GENE SIMMONS FAMILY JEWELS. The new real-life A&E family series steps into the home of the legendary, tongue-wagging rocker demon of KISS and Shannon Tweed, former Playmate of the Year, actress, model and mom. Gene and Shannon have been happily UNmarried for 23 years and have no plans to get married anytime soon. Their kids, Nick and Sophie, are surprisingly charming, well-behaved teenagers dealing with the trials and tribulations of adolescence, even though Mom and Dad are like no one else's parents on earth. Yes, Gene is a world-famous rock star and multi-media magnate, but he's also the kind of dad who brings Gatorade to his daughter's soccer games and stands in the front row of his son's rock band when they play gigs.

Get to know a side of Gene that he has kept hidden from the world at large until now, and see how the most non-traditional family in America manages to make normal life work under the oddest of circumstances.

4 out of 5 stars Kiss the Demon and his Family.......2007-06-28

Gene Simmons and his lady Shannon Tweed have two children..this is their first season reality show. Is it the Osbornes or Real World? NO...Its better

Simmons was one of the two front men in the legendary rock group KISS. On stage, he is a demon. At home, the show plays like a rock star's Father Knows Best. His family, thru on camera interviews, tell the tales. Simmons is a pussy cat, barely getting angry at his kids. Trying to impart wisdom to his kids Nick and Sophie

The entertainment is watching Simmons go from family man to demon. From not nonsense performance artist to real life dad,It is real life with teenagers and a non married wife

The extras are nice on this set.. However I would have enjoyed Gene's audio comments on an episode of two-more insight,

This could be sub titled my life as a rock star's kid and it is humanly funny...because Simmons takes himself so serious

5 out of 5 stars Gene Simmons - Family Jewels - Season One .......2007-06-11

I was very pleased with the item itself and how quick I received it!

5 out of 5 stars Loved It!!.......2007-06-01

I just got my order - in record time, too (I ordered it on May 25th and had it in my hands on May 30th). That being said, it would have been worth it if it had taken weeks to get here. How wonderful - the little scrapbook with Gene's own commentary, seeing how openly warm and cuddly he is in regard to his children - despite the "Demon Rock God" image. It will be a cherished part of my DVD library - a must have for any KISS fan.

1 out of 5 stars Really loved Kiss - really hated this show.......2007-05-31

What people who need money won't do to make a buck... Severely disappointing. I'd get more entertainment (and have a better time) from giving a drunk on a street corner (especially if it were Ozzy!) a sandwich than buying & watching this DVD set.

Someone should have never taken the make-up off & shouldn't have let fame go to his head.

One has to wonder what the rest of the family goes through with this ridiculousness...

If you want to see some seriously funny "Families of Rock" video, then get "The Osbornes" (Ozzy and the gang from Black Sabbath)

4 out of 5 stars i got mine today!!!!!.......2007-05-23

i got mine direclty from a&e tv and love it
however the description is a misnomer
there is the bonust unaired pilot
but the album is not 10 pages long
but other than that its awesome
the packaging is great
its very much like a photo album
and has pictures of the family
the bonus features are great and generous i really like "the lost songs" which has candid moments of gene singing songs he wrote and even a live performance of nick and his band. sophie sings as well
the blooper reel has gene messing up his lines which is really funny and various mishaps on the show
there is one disc that includes the a&e biography on gene simmons
one disc has gene simmons music and a personal note from gene about the songs
the set reminds me of the sex and the city pink photo album but its not pink but similar concept
there are a total of 8 featurettes which all are great

i paid about $7 more for the collectors edition and i am happy and thrilled i did
again i cant say enough about the packaging
its a bounded book basically
and well worth it

a must have for gene simmons fans

This 10-DVD boxed set is a delight for anyone afflicted with a susceptibility to the fractured antics of Jerry Lewis, or "Le Roi du Crazy" to the French. This set emphasizes Lewis's busy period after the breakup with Dean Martin, when he was exerting more influence over his vehicles (six of the titles are directed by Jerry himself) and almost single-handedly keeping Paramount Pictures propped up with his box-office take. The set curiously includes one of the Martin-Lewis pictures, 1953's The Stooge, which has echoes of the real-life vibe between Jerry and Dino.

The other titles include Lewis's 1957 solo starring debut, The Delicate Delinquent, and his directing bow, The Bellboy (1960). The latter is an often-ingenious and plotless collection of gags with Jerry as a bellhop in Miami Beach's Fountainebleau Hotel. His character doesn't speak (making the connection with silent cinema more pointed), but in one uproarious sequence the obnoxious movie star "Jerry Lewis" comes to visit the hotel.

The Ladies Man puts Lewis alone in a boarding house full of women. This film's bizarre sexual politics (and its amazing cut-away set) helps explain why French critics such as Jean-Luc Godard consider Lewis a cinematic genius--Godard actually borrowed the cut-away set idea for his film Tout va bien. The Errand Boy is a cascade of gags strung together on the set of "Paramutual Pictures," a movie studio that employs Lewis's klutzy gofer; it features one of Jerry's best musical miming routines. The Patsy is another good one, as nebbish Jerry is drafted into impersonating a famous deceased celebrity, but by 1965's The Family Jewels the inspiration is flagging a bit.

Two of the titles are directed by Lewis's mentor, Frank Tashlin. Cinderfella works a sentimental variation on the fairy tale; it's slow and at times mawkish, but some of Lewis's physical stuff is top-notch. The Disorderly Orderly is livelier, with a hospital setting and some of Jerry's most inspired babbling. The box also includes Lewis's acknowledged high point, The Nutty Professor, in its special-edition form. Its Jekyll-and-Hyde story is still the funniest and weirdest premise Lewis ever had. There are other Lewis films out there, but this box is definitely the cream of the career. If some of the jokes haven't aged well (and those who can't stand his mugging won't be convinced even by this set), Lewis still seems a more interesting filmmaker than he's usually given credit for. Extras include some disappointing commentaries with Lewis and Steve Lawrence, plus a smattering of outtakes, some of them funny and/or revealing of Lewis's directing technique. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I'm a Sucker for All Things Silly.......2007-06-19

This box set is right up my alley. No, it's not perfect. I also wanted Who's Minding the Store, The Geisha Boy, and Visit to a Small Planet. But you can't have everything. I do like the clear picture and sound on these films. What a fun trip down memory lane.
I haven't had a chance to watch the film which includes Dean Martin. That's back-burner for me. So, as for Jerry's films themselves...

The Good -
The Nutty Professor has been called his best. I really love it. Just great stuff, smooth and funny and colorful. But I hate the Buddy Love character. Totally one dimensional, one of the most obnoxious jerks you'd ever meet, and too much makeup. However, this movie has some truly brilliant comedy before it adds some maudlin goop (a lot of Lewis' work tends to do this sometimes, so you have to roll with it). This is probably the height of his talents.

The Ladies Man is a lot of fun at Miss Welonmelon's boarding house, with some great bits: the butterflies, feeding Baby, the Southern gal's incomprehensible dialogue, fixing the gangster's hat, wiping Welonmelon's portait (that always makes me laugh out loud!), and the microphone problem while broadcasting 'Up Your Street'. There's a rather sudden ending, but this is one of my favorites in Jerry's career. Amazing set, too.

The Bellboy is very enjoyable, and extremely rewatchable because it has a lot going on, one thing after another. The lunch counter gag kills me. And you can't beat Jerry tampering with a clay bust that's still wet. Very good overall. And his character has virtually no dialogue.

The Fair -
The Errand Boy is a fairly good comedy, a typical vehicle for Jerry Lewis. Again, slipping into pathos and mush (with the puppets) seems completely out of place with the pace and feel of this movie, no matter how charming and sweetly executed. But the scene where Jerry butchers all the last names is hilarious.

The Disorderly Orderly is part slapstick and part depressing psychological study. Some wonderful comic bits cannot overcome the serious feel that the movie plays with in the pretty blonde patient who is so bitter, resentful to everyone, and very troubled. If you took out all the parts with her and then extended the slapstick, you'd have a better flick. Just my opinion.

The Family Jewels is cute, definitely a family film; I liked this more than I remembered. Which uncle will young Donna choose to raise her? Granted, you know the ending long before it happens, but I loved the part when Jerry as the pilot takes the old ladies on a trip. Silly, surreal, and fun. Only on a plane with Jerry does the in-flight film become affected by the angle that the plane is flying. And Jerry gets to don five silly disguises in this movie, Uncle Julius being the same character as the Nutty Professor.

The Bad -
The Patsy just doesn't do it for me; taking the same exact concept as The Errand Boy (bigwigs need a substitute immediately and grab the first idiot they see), this movie grows tedious rapidly. It is not as funny as we expect.

Cinderfella is a musical that I don't care for; although it is nice to look at and has a few nice moments, the completely glacial flow kills it. It is slow, dull, and talky. It's not funny. (And Ed Wynn looks like he just returned from a three day drunk in Vegas.) Maybe this would have been a better film if Jerry had written it and directed it. Sorry, but a big yawn.

I still have to watch The Delicate Delinquent, but so far I am pleased with this collection. The bottom line is that this set has a handful of terrific movies that you just don't see on television any longer. And the gems make up for the duds, definitely.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2007-03-08

The product was precisely what was ordered, but the back of the packaging had a gash in it that went through the plastic into the cardboard.

Mr. Bean meets Mr. Bond in Johnny English, a spy spoof that skewers the genre with Rowan Atkinson's trademark brand of veddy-British slapstick. It's a bit half-baked as a wannabe franchise, but Atkinson's creation of a new screen persona is just promising enough to warrant a sequel, despite critics' complaints that Austin Powers had already exhausted the spy-spoof's potential. Poppycock! Atkinson's gift for physical and, in this case, even verbal humor will surely please his devoted fans, even when a rather tepidly comedic screenplay prevents the British funnyman from reaching new heights of absurdity. As bumbling superspy Johnny English, who gains top-level MI-7 clearance after inadvertently causing a colleague's demise, Atkinson breathes life into gags that are too familiar to earn such an amusing revival. With John Malkovich as a smarmy Frenchman determined to overthrow the British monarchy, and Natalie Imbruglia as Johnny's comely comrade-in-arms, this slight but enjoyable comedy gives Atkinson plenty of opportunity to mug it up as only he can. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars My all-time favorite comedy.......2007-06-08

Johnny English is my favorite comedy of all time! I've seen it at least 20 times over he past 3 years and am still not tired of it, on the contrary, I find it extremely delightful every time! If you like Rowan Atkinson, make sure you don't miss this comedy! The role of a clumsy secret agent suits him to a T and this is British humor at its best! I've watched a lot of British comedies and this, along with the Blackadder series 1, 2, and 3, are my absolute favorites! Of course much of it is based on cliches, but Atkinson's way of dealing with these cliches is most unexpected and therefore very refreshing.

5 out of 5 stars 2nd James Bond 007.......2007-03-22

If you ever fall in love with Mr. Bean, the UK comedy television series, you should fall in love with Johnny English as well. It is one of an outstanding comedy films that combines the clumsiness, laughing out loud moments, and romantic scenes of Rowan Atkinson who is a director himself. It can be described as the combination of Mr. Bean and James Bond 007.

The film has some similarities in both Mr. Bean and James Bond 007. There are many moments in Johnny English that remind the viewers of Mr. Bean. One of them is when Atkinson is in the shower with a duck toy that babies usually play with when they take a shower. This film is different from Mr. Bean due to the fact that the viewers will not be able to hear audiences laughing when Atkinson does something stupid that we usually hear from watching Mr. Bean. It is a film not one of the series that ends in half an hour. The film itself takes about one hour and twenty-eight minutes. In Mr. Bean, the viewers can easily notice that Atkinson plays in the role of a mute person, but not in Johnny English. He speaks with his British Accent in Johnny English. It is also different from James Bonds 007 on account of the film being taken only in United Kingdom instead of all over the world.

4 out of 5 stars Johnny English.......2007-02-12

When I was in the mood for a spy spoof to watch with a certain James Bond film, I decided to give the Austin Powers films a miss, and sample Johnny English (other hopefuls would be Spy Hard, but my recollection of that film is that I wanted to walk out of the theatre--and then there's Spies Like Us, but, uh, no, not right now).

Johnny English stars George Lazenby--oh no wait, that's Rowan Atkinson--and an Australian with very little acting experience, George Lazenby--oh no wait that's Natalie Imruglia. It is Atkinson, as the title character, who helps make this a delightful surprise, along with some pretty funny sequences: for instance, Atkinson having trouble with his tie in a sushi bar, Atkinson involved in a car chase where the car he's in is hanging from the winch of a tow truck.

The knocks against this film, when they come, seem to be as follows: we've had too many spy spoofs, the plot involving John Malkovich as a Frenchman trying to become ruler of England is too ridiculous, and the film isn't that funny. To all this frippery I say: how many, exactly, is too many spy spoofs?, this is a comedy and the outrageous, shamefacedly contrived storyline is so brash and amorphous that it's a daring nonsensical joy, and finally, though not all the gags work perfectly, I found I was laughing most of the way through.

Uh, not to put too fine a point on it, but who is saying we have too many spy spoofs...fans of the TWENTY-ONE Bond films?

More thoughts on the gags: sure, Atkinson's intrusion on a funeral and its results goes on a bit long, and a buttocks-shot joke harks right back to Naked Gun 2(and a half), and the drawn-out results of our bumbling hero's parachute jump onto a skyscraper are only mildly amusing, but there are many more tidbits that I don't want to spoil. It's not true at all that this film is only funny the first time round; if You Only Watch Once, then you deny yourself repeated exposure to Malkovich's bad French accent, and the guy with the eyepatch, the banana-shaped scars, the bad teeth, and the frizzy orange hair.

I think that Johnny English is pretty consistent in doling out the laughs, and that makes it a success as far as I'm concerned. We probably won't see a sequel, so those who feel we have too many spy spoofs shall have their petty little victory, I suppose.

5 out of 5 stars Great comedy wrapped in a slick spy package.......2007-02-03

I've always enjoyed the world of suave spies and all of their gadgets. Giving Rowan Atkinson access to this world sets the stage for many laughs. I was struck by how creatively he can get himself into a variety of messes. The best mess of the movie is when is Aston Martin is towed and he highjacks the truck. His physical "Mr. Bean" humor tied to his "spy-ish" good looks makes his character one of the best that I've seen in a long time. Three cheers for a great, clean comedy.

4 out of 5 stars A trifle, but with plenty of laughs for Rowan Atkinson fans.......2007-01-06

"Johnny English" is a completely unnecessary film, and seems to know it. Virtually no effort has been made to make this movie anything other than an excuse to watch Rowan Atkinson make a complete fool of himself for 80 minutes. The question you must ask yourself before watching this movie is, is that enough?

For me, the answer is yes. I can't explain why - I just find Atkinson to be hysterical. His scene as the priest in "4 Weddings and a Funeral" is the funniest in that hilarious movie, and his brief moments in "Love Actually" steal a movie that doesn't want to be stolen. Others will disagree with those sentiments, and those folks should probably steer clear of "Johnny English."

Do we need another James Bond spoof? Probably not. Do we need a movie in which a beautiful woman makes a comment to Atkinson, and his response includes the terms, "plastic toys" and "soft cheese"? I sure did - I had to pause the movie I was laughing so hard. So for me, the experience of watching Atkinson play a bumbling James Bond figure was wonderful, even though I know the movie isn't a "good" film.

Maybe that's part of its charm. John Malkovich, one of the great actors working today, also seems to know he's in a bad movie. So he plays the French villain badly, like he's in on the joke. That's the kind of self-awareness that makes "Johnny English" at worst a harmless trifle, and at best a funny silly comedy.

Description

It's always been quite rare to see AC/DC - unless you go to their concerts. Television appearances, and later music videos, have always been a necessary evil to this band of nononsense rockers. Consequently, only their early years were documented on television - mostly in Australia and Europe - and when the time came to switch to promotional video clips, the band always made their own and gave them the appearance of a live show. But they've also never wasted an opportunity to make a big statement with their clips. From singer Bon Scott dressing like a school girl (to Angus Young's school boy) and smoking(!) on their first major television appearance, to the giant rocking spectacle of the "Big Gun" video (with guest appearance by Arnold Schwarzenegger), AC/DC has always been larger than life and their timeless brand of rock and roll has been as big on screen as it has off. Now for the first time Epic Records is proud to announce the first ever compilation of AC/DC videos from all parts of their storied career. Starting in 1975 on Australian TV's Countdown show through the Spanish TV clips filmed just ten days before Bon Scott's death - the first great era of the band is chronicled on Disc One. Disc Two starts with the promo videos for Back In Black (several never before available) and sees many of the 80's and 90's clips on DVD for the first time. This is truly a monumental collection of clips from one of the world's greatest bands - all completely remastered for DVD with the same care as the Epic CD remasters and the Live At Donington DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Videos, yes..........2007-05-07

Several people complained about not seeing live footage. Buy a live DVD, for criminey's sake. I LOVE the music videos/promos. Live footage is an okay extra, but I want to see the videos... lost art of music videos! I wish there was a bit of extra stuff to go with the videos, but not live material. Band interviews are 100% more interesting. The only time I care about seeing live footage... uh, is when I see a band live.

3 out of 5 stars Expecting more?.......2007-04-05

The package arrived as listed but I was expecting more from the actual DVD. I was hoping to see more concert footage but all it was, the video library of AC/DC. The video's are great but I was expecting more.

1 out of 5 stars not funny.......2007-06-25

Jerry Lewis kisses a little girl at least 2 times on the mouth. Then he asks her if she washed behind the ears. Then he tells her to brush her teeth. This could have easily been written a grade 4 guy. Also, it is quite irritating to see Jerry Lewis waste time doing the same things over and over in the hopes that it may be funny. Booo!

5 out of 5 stars The Magnificent Seven...of Jerry Lewis!.......2007-03-25

I am truly amazed of the talent Jerry Lewis presented in this 1965 comedy. It is good family fun of which we don't see too much of. I liked the characters. Proud to own this Jerry Lewis classic in my collection! How about it. I thought every one of his characters were MAGNIFICENT!!

5 out of 5 stars Its seven Times Jerry.......2006-09-30

After the Nutty Professor, Jerry Lewis topped himself by playing eight characters in the film The Family Jewels

Donna Butterworth play the orphaned little rich girl, who needs to pick a father from her father's seven brothers (all played by Lewis). Lewis also plays her driver and companion Willard. All this comedy may seem uneven in this farce. Lewis overworks himself trying to balance director, writer and star and it shows on film. However, as uneven as this film is, Lewis still plays this slapstick comedy to the hilt and it works.

The best extra on this DVD is the full audio comentary of Lewis with his friend Steve Lawrence (of Steve & Edie fame). There are interesting tidbits of information on filmmaking and the film itself. They say that hindsight and age is revealing, this DVD proves this true. Also if you want get this and Lewis's Nutty Professor, The Bellboy or Cinderfella (all his best works)

This is a family comedy that the whole family can watch, so get it!

Bennet Pomerantz, AUDIOWORLD

5 out of 5 stars Another comedy gem from Jerry.......2006-06-22

Whenever I watch this film, I pick up on humorous bits that I missed previously. There's enough gags here for another movie. While Jerry has his detractors, I don't think anyone will deny that the films he wrote and directed - especially his color films- are terrific to look at. The cinematography here is gorgeous. Jerry has so much fun playing different characters that it's impossible to not get caught up in his enthusiasm. And while his commentary is disappointingly skimpy, when he does talk you can hear that this is a filmmaker who clearly knows what he is doing. As the young heiress, Donna Butterworth is adorable but never overly cute. This is just a terrific family film.

5 out of 5 stars Seven times Jerry.......2006-03-23

The many talents of Lewis ( some malicious mind could say " the many egos of Lewis", anyway very few " egos " for so much talent), this is: as filmmaker, as transformist, as gagman and as actor, altogether in a comedy jewel: a brilliant "tour de force" where Jerry plays seven zanny characters ( the six uncles of Donna, a young heiress who must choose one of them as her future protector, and Willard, her bodyguard and closest friend )at the time he give us one of his most depurated and daring films as director.

Between the many great moments of this excellent movie we find a funny homage to Terry-Thomas ( Lewis as the nonchalant and zanny aviator of a tumbledown airplane ) and Anne Baxter in a short but unforgettable comic scene. Another diamond of one of the most innovative comedy directors of all time.

Widescreen edition. Extras: theatrical trailer and bloopers.

4 out of 5 stars Good classic anime Tv series.......2006-03-17

I loved this show based in the comic books of Monkey Punch. It follows the adventures of master thief Lupin the Third nephew of the French Arsene Lupin and his gang composed by Goemon Ishikawa a master samurai and Deitsuke Jigen a cold blooded gunman.Sometimes joins to the band Fujiko Mine a bussom beautiful lady expert in conning and also thieving.Where the most valuable or expensive treasure or antique is Lupin the Third and his gang trying to rob it.The Dvd has 5 episodes that are in order as they originally broadcasted with the preview and even the commercials break. The series are well translated and the voices of the dubbers are quite similar to original japanese. The only flaw in this Dvd is that the English subtitles are the translation of the Japanese version not the English dubbed version.Sound and picture quality are more than average.I will wait for next volume.

4 out of 5 stars The English dub is just fine. Lupin rocks!.......2004-02-23

Please do not let the reviewer who trashed the Pioneer English dub steer you from picking up this DVD. Once again, Pioneer has released another fine addition to the Lupin series, each one being funnier than the last.

For you NON-otaku who are thinking of skipping this one because of what was said about Pioneer's dub cast, here's what you need to keep in mind about some hardcore "otaku" anime fans...even if the dub was perfect, they'd find some reason to whine. Hence, reviews like the one below. Remember that before you take that review too much to heart. I listened to the English dub and the original Japanese track with an open mind and open ears, and I think Tony Oliver(Lupin), Lex Lang (Goemon), Richard Epcar(Jigen) and Michelle Ruff(Fujiko) did an excellent job! The only thing that threw me off are the modern day pop-culture references that have made their way into too many of Pioneer's Lupin releases. But seeing how the original was made in the late 60's and early 70's, staying too close to the time period which it was made would have dated the series more than the animation has. But that's a minor quibble in what is a fine series overall.

Oh, and if you ARE a "subs rule, dubs drool" anime fan, then let me clue you in...this edition, like all of the Pioneer Lupin series, comes with subtitles AND the original Japanese track. See? Everybody wins.

Lupin the thiiiiiiirrrrrrd!!!

5 out of 5 stars Funny still, but AVOID THE ENGLISH DUB AT ALL COSTS.......2004-01-22

The episode's in the 3rd volume are some classics: Lupin worrying he's a schizo(with some great moments, especially the end), the gang encountering someone pretending to be Lawrence of Araiba the 3rd, Lupin tries to destroy something which winds up stuck in Zenigata's teeth, have to save Fujiko from a curse that involves ZOMBIES!, and, arguably the best one, since it's very different from the typical episodes, attempts to steal a jewel, but is doing so while in disguise as one of three famous detectives! The episodes are great fun, and the animation's even gotten better. This is a great buy. Still, there's still something wrong with this series..... THE ENGLISH DUBBING!!!!!

It's horrible. Pure awful. The voices simply ruin the entire English version. Why was Tony Oliver cast as Lupin? He gives the master thief an awful, hi-pitched voice, and makes him sound like a complete idiot. Richard Epcar, who did a great Goemon in Cagliostro, butchers Jigen. He sounds like he's trying to imitate Chris Sabat's version of him. The same goes for Goemon's voice actor(I forget his name), who sounds like he's imitating Mike McFarland. And the awful, dumbed down lines. "Oh, yes, I had a case like that before, I kept a violin in it!" Ugh. I think it's odd, if the series is supposed to be aimed for adults, why is it dubbed as if it were for three-year olds!? Overall, the English dub is to be avoided. Don't listen to this hunk of garbage! The Japanese voices are MUCH better!

The DVD's great, but the bad English-voice nearly ruins it.

5 out of 5 stars It's Lupin and funny stuff as always.......2003-07-17

Okay I will make this short and sweet, every episode on here is funny, the animation is clean and the sound is good. The only thing I do not like about the series so far is that they are not releasing the english versions of this in one set. This is the second season of Lupin, the funnier one, and there are over 100 episodes of it. I guess I will buy them until I see the english version of this in Box set. You could buy the Japanese sets also, but who wants to read the whole time.

      Product Description

Germany released, PAL/Region 0 DVD: it WILL NOT play on standard US DVD player. You need multi-region PAL/NTSC DVD player to view it in USA/Canada. LANGUAGES: German (Dolby Digital 2.0), English (Subtitles), WIDESCREEN (1.85:1), SYNOPSIS: A shaggy-dog yarn given a loopy, very offbeat flavor by direction and performances, Robert Schwentke's sophomore outing, "The Family Jewels," couldn't be more different from his umbrous serial-killer thriller "Tattoo." Despite its many qualities, the black comedy, about an ambitious young guy who first loses a testicle to cancer and then has a ball trying to steal it back from the hospital's path lab, looks a surer bet as a curio on the fest circuit than as a regular item in offshore hardtops.
