Darren (Jason Biggs of American Pie) is convinced that he'll never know love, since his one true love moved away during high school. To cheer him up, Darren's best friends Wayne (Steve Zahn, Out of Sight, That Thing You Do) and J.D. (Jack Black, High Fidelity) hook him up with Judith (Amanda Peet, The Whole Nine Yards)--little suspecting that Judith will tear their friendship apart. Judith wastes no time in taking over Darren's life, exiling his friends, and burning his beloved Neil Diamond records. If only Wayne and J.D. can bring Darren back together with his high school sweetheart (Amanda Detmer), who's about to become a nun. Saving Silverman is unquestionably of the There's Something About Mary school of comedy, throwing together absurd characters and over-the-top gags (for example, a scene of Darren getting butt implants, per Judith's orders). It doesn't quite balance everything, but Black and Zahn are engaging comic talents. Also featuring R. Lee Ermey as the boy's deranged high school football coach, whose advice continues to guide their lives, as well as a surprise appearance by Neil Diamond himself. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Forgot how funny this movie really is!.......2007-05-13

Ok now I have not seen this on dvd ive seen it on tv sometimes so I guess the pg-13 version is the best one to review or it doesn't matter. This movie was funny how silverman (jason biggs) falls inlove with the manipulant evil judith (amanda peet) who tells him what to do and silverman has to eat it up from her because he can't resist her. And it's up to 2 of his best friends (steve zahn & jack black) to stop him from making a big mistake they kidnap judith and made it look like she died in a car accident and she's tied in their basement which silverman now thinks judiths dead. Now they try to hook him up with a girl he met years ago who is becoming a nun. Judith manages to escape from the basement and run to silverman and they were about to get married and 2 of his best friends must stop the wedding before it's too late. Mabe one day I will buy this movie it's so funny and I give it a 5/5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Evil Woman.......2006-08-30

Saving Silverman is an example of a movie so stupid that it's actually pretty good. I couldn't stop laughing even as I felt my IQ dropping. Who would have thought of a movie where the three males are Neil Diamond enthusiasts?

Jack Black is my new favorite guy to watch in comedies. I love him in Shallow Hal also.

Amanda Peet is excellent as the "evil woman." The way she keeps outwitting Black and Kahn is so fun to watch.

The weak links are Jason Biggs and Amanda Wheeler. I remember Biggs from when he was on the soap opera As The World Turns. He couldn't act then either, but at least he's bearable here. Amanda Wheeler's character is just too sweet to be interesting; but, I understand it was necessary considering she was about to become a nun.

The events of Saving Silverman could never happen in real life: two Neil Diamond fanatics kidnap their best friends' girlfriend and try to hook him up with an ex all because she is controlling and mean? Nope. Would never happen.

4 out of 5 stars This Movie Saved my Marriage!!!.......2006-08-23

No, not really, but I liked the sound of that title.

This movie was recommended to me by my great friend Bobby Asslong, who's recommendations are usually quite odd, and contrived, but this time, he hit the mark right on!

Jack Black and Steve Zahn are absolutely hilarious, and Jason Biggs plays the straight one, in the title role. I personally didn't think Jason did as good a job as he could have done, but that's just my opinion. I personally don't care for Jason's acting.

The set-ups in this movie are priceless, and I actually really got turned on by Amanda Peet, when she was working to get un-handcuffed by the Steve Zahn character. Friggin awesome!

Watching this movie reminds me of a very good friend of mine, named Ronald Freidman. He is actually more P WHIPPED than the Jason Biggs character in this movie! His wife, Jacquelina, rides him HARD and puts him away WET every singly day of the week, as she gambles away her savings at a nearby Indian Casino, 3 and 4 times per week. I actually saw her slap him with a lot of force at a recent party. What a lousy life she makes for him! I think my boy Bobby A and I should make a movie called: Saving Freidman! Hey, it could work!

Two big thumbs WAY UP!!!

4 out of 5 stars An Afternoon Delight.......2006-07-04

Whether it's watching network news or playin' "Pull My Finger," it doesn't take much to make me laugh. More importantly, hit me between the eyes with ribald, sophomoric humor--humor as meaningful as a clown reading Shakespeare--and I'm good to go. Don't give me Woody Allen; give me Cheech & Chong and a box of pizza rolls.

Which is why SAVING SILVERMAN floats my boat. This flick has a stupid story (a triumvirate of buds torn apart by the girlfriend from Hades, and the steps taken by the two friends on the outside looking in to bust up the romance), over-the-top antics, goofy shtick, and a healthy dose of cornball. But it's darn funny, and as unpretentious as a mongrel using a fire hydrant. This movie reminds me of the best way to ride a rollercoaster: just let go and have fun.

Jason Biggs is okay as the nerdy and whipped friend who must be "saved" (probably not much of an acting stretch for him), yet Steve Zahn and Jack Black are superb as the two mentally-challenged buds doing the saving. These guys make a great comedic team; they ought to hook up again in another movie. But as good as Zahn and Black are, Amanda Peet steals the show as the straight-faced, ball-busting girlfriend who won't give up her man under any circumstances (and some circumstances in this film are considerable). As mentioned above, SAVING SILVERMAN doesn't garner any blueblood points, but it serves up blue collar humor in spades.

    Product Description

To the horror of prudes everywhere, American Pie 2 is even funnier than its popular predecessor, pushing the R rating with such unabashed ribaldry that you'll either be appalled or surprised by its defiant celebration of the young-adult male libido. Females will be equally shocked or delighted, because like American Pie this appealing, character-based comedy puts the women in control while offering a front-row view of horny guys in all their dubious glory. Which is to say, American Pie is mostly about sex--or, to be more specific, breasts, genitalia, "potential" lesbianism, blue silicone sex toys, crude methods of seduction, "the rule of three" (just watch the movie), a shower of "champagne," phone sex, tantric sex, and, oh yeah... superglue. In the case of college freshman Jim (Jason Biggs), performance anxiety plagues his upcoming reunion with sexy Czech exchange student Nadia (Shannon Elizabeth), but his buddies from American Pie have a solution: rent a Lake Michigan beach house for the summer, throw wild parties to lure the local "hotties," and score big-time. Beach Party this ain't: blessed with a complete cast reunion from AP1 (including Eugene Levy as Jim's dad), this sequel is anything but innocent, and with the exception of drugs (which are conspicuously absent), pretty much anything goes. The gags are almost nonstop, and director J.B. Rogers (recovering from his debut debacle Say It Isn't So) handles them with laudable precision, allowing his young cast (particularly Biggs, who epitomizes comedic good sportsmanship) to run with lines that most people wouldn't dare utter aloud. The result is a liberating and eminently good-natured comedy that needn't apologize for its one-track mind
