Taken on its own terms as a big-screen sitcom, Guess Who offers plenty of humor with just enough social commentary to make its point without being preachy. Of course, we've come along way since interracial romance was such a hot-button issue in Stanley Kramer's earnest 1967 drama Guess Who's Coming To Dinner, and nobody's going to mistake Ashton Kutcher and Bernie Mac (in this updated semi-remake) with the original film's Sidney Poitier and Spencer Tracy. And that's fine, because Guess Who--from the director of Barbershop 2--doesn't pretend to be anything more than a slick, entertaining vehicle for domestic farce with the racial roles reversed. Kutcher's romance with an African-American beauty (Zoë Sandaña) causes sparks to fly when he's introduced to her father (Bernie Mac). What ensues is basically an interracial buddy comedy that's as uninspired as it is easy to watch, and there's a dinner-table scene that's refreshingly provocative in this movie's otherwise tamely cautious context. We can all be thankful that humanity has matured a little since the racial tensions of the late '60s, but Hollywood's progress (and Kutcher's career) remains subject to debate. --Jeff Shannon
Description
When Theresa (Zoe Saldana) brings fiance Simon Green (Ashton Kutcher) home for her parents' 25th wedding anniversary, she's neglected to mention one tiny detail - he's white. Determined to break his daughter's engagement, Percy Jones (Bernie Mac) does everything he can to make Simon feel "apart" of the family, from running his credit report to locking him in the basement at night. But when Percy gleefully exposes Simon's most embarrassing secret, it leads to an outrageous series of comic complications that only goes to prove that with a dad like Percy Jones, father doesn't always know best.

Spencer Tracy's last performance was in this well-meaning, handsome film by Stanley Kramer about a pair of white parents (Tracy and Katharine Hepburn) trying to make sense of their daughter's impending marriage to an African American doctor (Sidney Poitier). The film has been knocked over the years for padding conflict and stoking easy liberalism by making Poitier's character in every socioeconomic sense a good catch: But what if Kramer had made this stranger a factory worker? Would the audience still find it as easy to accept a mixed-race relationship? But there's no denying the drawing power of this movie, which gets most of its integrity from the stirring performances of Tracy and Hepburn. When the former (who had been so ill that the production could not get completion insurance) gives a speech toward the end about race, love, and much else, it's impossible not to be affected by the last great moment in a great actor's life and career. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:
I thoroughly enjoy this DVD!.......2007-05-22
This is a wonderful reunion DVD. The Guess Who sound better than ever, and are obviously loving every minute of it. Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman make this show (of course) - and it's well worth watching and owning.
Guess Who DVD review.......2007-05-12
This DVD is well made and a must for any Guess Who fan. The band still gets it done and really put on a great show for their fans. Great sound and good extra footage as well. All their great hits were done to perfection.
Variable volume ruins this DVD.......2007-04-07
Let me say, first off, that I've been a fan of this band since the late 60's. So I'm no "Guess Who fan come lately," by any means. Let me also say that this is a fine concert -- the band is really on, playing before friends and family during a violent thunderstorm in Winnipeg. The performance is great, and the production (meaning sound quality, in the sense of balance and clarity) is great, too.
So why only 2 stars? Because the volume of the DVD is variable, not constant, as if there were some sort of limiter in the processing. It's loud, then suddenly it's soft, then suddenly it's loud again, for no good reason. And this variability simply ruin the DVD. Since it's highly unlikely this is a manufacturing defect, I'm rather surprised no other reviewer has noticed. Really a shame, too -- if this problem were fixed, the DVD would a priceless addition to the library of any Guess Who fan. I can only speculate that a complete idiot was in charge of the final mix.
Guess I'll just have to stick with the VHS tape of the band's earlier Toronto reunion concert. And when will THAT fine concert be coming out on DVD, I wonder? We're waiting, fellas . . . !
Guess Who - Running Back Thru Canada.......2007-03-16
Unbelievable audio and excellent video! They sound as good as ever and it is one of the finest Music DVD's I have purchased. This is a Classic!
Great to Actually See the Guess Who.......2007-03-09
I have always enjoyed the music from Guess Who but never got to see them live. For that reason I bought their DVD. It fulfills that purpose. The video quality is OK but not up to recent DVD standards. Some great DVD concerts that excel in both audio and video quality are Santana's "Supernatural" and Peter Frampton's "Live In Detroit". Those are both excellent concerts. I have several others but I won't mention them all.
Burt Cummings voice has changed or his style has changed since most of his original early recordings. He doesn't have the deep powerful voice we are familiar with on the early recordings and he now puts a Axl Rose from Gun-n-Roses twang on the end of a lot of his words. I was hoping for more of what he sounded like years ago. I know people change and voices change as the years go by but I personally prefer his old sound.
It was still a good concert to watch and I'm glad I bought it. I probably won't play it many times but good to have in the collection.

Like most festival shows, the Toronto Rocks concert, a SARS benefit held on July 30, 2003 before a teeming crowd of 490,000, is a pretty mixed bag. For one thing, the Guess Who, Rush, AC/DC, and the Rolling Stones--the headliners--are all well past their primes. They're still kicking, of course, and fans of each will relish their sets. But no headliner save Rush exudes the freshness and spark evident in the tantalizing snippets of the performances we don't see on this single-disc DVD: Canadian acts like Blue Rodeo, the Tea Party, and Sass Jordan (with a still-riveting Jeff Healey on guitar). The Stones command more than their fair share of screen time, and some would say they've earned it. Meanwhile, we're also served three helpings of Dan Aykroyd and Jim Belushi's ho-hum Have Love Will Travel revue. Who steals the show? The Isley Brothers, led by founding singer Ronald and axeman Ernie, who blaze through "Who's That Lady" and their classic "Shout" with a band of lock-tight musicians and dancers.
The DVD includes the kind of full-size color booklet every concert disc should come with, a choice of Dolby Digital 5.1 surround and uncompressed PCM stereo sound (both great), and a dose of "bonus" backstage ballyhoo. A unique extra is the director's broadcast call of the camera shots for AC/DC's "Thunderstruck," revealing the frantic, real-time demands of a live shoot. --Michael Mikesell
Description
On July 30, 2003, close to a half a million people gathered in Toronto for one of the most spectacular concerts of all time in fact, the largest ticketed single-day event in history. The Rolling Stones headlined the show, accompanied by 13 other acts, including AC/DC, Rush, the Guess Who, and Justin Timberlake. Now, this amazing day has been captured on DVD.

Customer Reviews:
Self-confidence.......2007-01-01
"Morning Glory" is probably a movie that would be a lot harder to come across (and it isn't that easy to find as it is) if it weren't the movie for which Katherine Hepburn won her first Oscar. After watching it with mixed feelings the other night, it dawned on me that there is actually a pretty good facet to this movie. There are three main female characters and each of them gives us a portrait of a self-confident woman. What is interesting is that each of them gets their confidence from a different source. The first woman we are introduced to is an established movie star whose self-confidence arises from her career. She knows she will succeed because she has already done so repeatedly. The next woman we are introduced to is self-confident because she is having an affair with the producer. She knows she will succeed because her lover owes it to her. The last woman we meet is Hepburn's character whose self-confidence arises solely from her belief in herself. She knows she will succeed merely because she cannot envision any other outcome.
As I pondered the meaning of "Morning Glory", I came to understand that the writers and directors wanted to show that attitude IS the key to success. While the established star could lose her self-confidence with a series of flops and the gold-digger could find herself replaced by a new paramour, Hepburn's attitude would (and DID) carry her farther. While the acting, directing and other aspects gave me the impression that this was a "3 Star" movie at best, the subtle message made me realize that it actually deserved a "4 Star" rating.
VeRy GoOd.......2003-06-03
I thought it was good. Katherine Hepburn did a wonderful job in this movie & i enjoyed it alot.
Off to a Great Start!.......2001-05-05
Katherine Hepburn's first Oscar winning role is the perfect introduction to her personality and talent. An aristocratic, beautiful girl from New England takes the entertainment world by storm with her unique charm and iron resolve. Sound familiar? The "I don't wear cheap furs" scene had me choking with laughter, along with what I call the "drunken best of Shakespeare" scene where she launches into a chamgagne-fueled random explosion of highlights from "Romeo and Juliet" and "Hamlet" at a party for top theatre execs.
Hepburn's First Oscar - Solid First Act and then...Melodrama.......2000-09-05
Katharine Hepburn won her first Academy Award for her portrayal of Eve Lovelace (nee Ada Love), a star struck girl who comes to the big city to be a star. The party scene in which a drunk Lovelace does Hamlet's soliloquy and the balcony scene from Romeo & Juliet is usually cited as means of an explanation for why she won. But the quintessential Hepburn scene is when she arrives at the office of the successful Broadway producer and charms an old English character actor. Her is the quick, clipped speech that would become so caricatured down the road and it is far and away the best scene it the film.
The last half of the film resorts to the old chestnut of our young heroine having to go on opening night, where she becomes a star. The problem is there is no proof of the pudding here. We hear people talking about how wonderful Eve is on stage, but we see none of her performance. The film gives us indications of her talent but totally ignores her moment of triumph in favor of people talking about it instead. It is useful to remember that Hepburn also made "Little Women" the same year as "Morning Glory" and that certainly her body of work that year was taken into consideration (her Jo March won the prize at Cannes that year I believe-the closest contemporary parallel would probably be Diane Keaton who did "Annie Hall" and "Looking for Mr. Goodbar" the same year, which you must agree is certainly an indication of range).
The first half would get 4 stars the last half 2 stars, and that's how we get to 3. Simple mathematics.
Once you watch this film you should then screen Hepburn in "Stage Door," the climax of which certainly provides what is missing from "Morning Glory." Within 15 minutes of that particular film you see Hepburn play a bad actress and a very good actress. The transformation is stunning and certainly integral to that film in a way it would not be to this one. Given that when she made "Stage Door" Hepburn was considered Box Office Poison, it is interesting to look at this pair of films as a set. "Morning Glory" jump started Hepburn's career, and "Stage Door" heralded her revival. So I highly recommend you watch the two films as a double feature.
Worth Seeing once.......2000-08-12
Katharine Hepburn delivers a great performance in this otherwise routine movie. The story is rather trite, and mundane and just when there is hope for a good picture it ends. However the scene where Ms. Hepburn recites Hamlet's soliloquy and then the does the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet is worth seeing even if you must sit through the rest of the movie.
