B movie maverick Larry Cohen always enjoyed slipping a little social commentary into his genre pictures, and the satirical sci-fi/horror comedy The Stuff is no exception. A mix of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and The Blob, The Stuff is an insidiously addictive, low-calorie dessert sensation that soon wins the hearts and minds of the nation, but mostly the minds. You see, to borrow a title from another Cohen classic, it's alive.
Michael Moriarty is an industrial spy with questionable ethics and a certain moral flexibility behind his disarming drawl. "No one is as dumb as I appear to be," he informs his newest client, a snack food CEO who wants the secret of The Stuff. Needless to say he becomes the film's hero, a smart-talking everyman battling a compromised FDA and a corporate baddie who sees dollar signs in every Stuff snarfing zombie he converts. Cohen's satirical swipes at consumerism, advertising, and the ethics of corporate profit come fast and furious, if not exactly focused, and help drive the film past his--at times--sloppy direction. Moriarty's energetic performance is hilarious, and his rag-tag crew includes Andrea Marcovicci as an advertising wunderkind (who improbably falls in love with Moriarty), Saturday Night Live alum Garrett Morris as "Famous Amos" parody "Chocolate Chip Charlie," and Paul Sorvino as a commie-hating, conspiracy-spewing militia leader.
The DVD features commentary by Larry Cohen along with trailers and detailed biographies. --Sean Axmaker

Midnite Movies boxed up.......2007-05-26
These are the 4 Midnite Movie Double Features of AIP Beach Party films that were released a few years back. I enjoy being able to sit back and watch the surf nonsense. Eric Von Zipper is king. Shame they don't run these as afternoon flicks in the summer on WLVI in Boston. Also a shame they didn't create a double feature of Pajama Party and Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine.
The only question is if MGM ever fixed How to Stuff a Wild Bikini. The orignal release claimed it was an anamophic version of the Scope transfer, but it turned out to be the pan and scan.
Annette!!!.......2007-04-26
What can I say. I had a big crush on Annette growing up. I will definitely want this collection. Annette in a bikini!! Enough said.

Philip Kaufman's intimate epic about the Mercury astronauts (based on Tom Wolfe's book) was one of the most ambitious and spectacularly exciting movies of the 1980s. It surprised almost everybody by not becoming a smash hit. By all rights, the film should have been every bit the success that Apollo 13 would later become; The Right Stuff is not only just as thrilling, but it is also a bigger and better movie. Combining history (both established and revisionist), grand mythmaking (and myth puncturing), adventure, melodrama, behind-the-scenes dish, spectacular visuals, and a down-to-earth sense of humor, The Right Stuff chronicles NASA's efforts to put a man in orbit. Such an achievement would be the first step toward President Kennedy's goal of reaching the moon, and, perhaps most important of all, would win a crucial public relations/morale victory over the Soviets, who had delivered a stunning blow to American pride by launching Sputnik, the first satellite. The movie contrasts the daring feats of the unsung test pilots--one of whom, Chuck Yeager, embodied more than anyone else the skill and spirit of Wolfe's title--against the heavily publicized (and sanitized) accomplishments of the Mercury astronauts. Through no fault of their own, the spacemen became prisoners of the heroic images the government created for them in order to capture the public's imagination. The casting is inspired; the film features Sam Shepard as the legendary Yeager, Ed Harris as John Glenn, Dennis Quaid as "Gordo" Cooper, Scott Glenn as Alan Shepard, Fred Ward as Gus Grissom, Scott Wilson as Scott Crossfield, and Pamela Reed and Veronica Cartwright are superb in their thankless roles as astronauts' wives. --Jim Emerson

Grown-up? You bet. (Inappropriate for kids? No.).......2007-04-29
Any reviewer who insists that this movie contains content inappropriate for "students of any age" is exaggerating. "The Right Stuff" is rated PG. Any bright pre-adolescent would understand this film; certainly any high-school student would. It contains no sexual language that a 21st-century kid would not have already heard on American broadcast TV. In fact, the astronauts in the film talk like the 1960s "squares" they were, all too unwilling to use ugly language. They speak in metaphors and euphemisms, just as ordinary men of that era did.
"The Right Stuff" is patriotic, serious, wry, funny, observant, and utterly grown-up. It accurately depicts men and women confronting adult issues of ambition, celebrity, marriage, and brotherhood. What it is NOT...is a live-action movie with a cartoon mentality, like so many films deemed appropriate for school-age children by holier-than-thou "reviewers."
They were just men....or were they?.......2007-04-17
Scott Glenn, Ed Harris and Dennis Quaid are three wonderful reasons to watch this movie. Based on the book by Chuck Yeager, this movie depicts 1950's and 1960's mentality and eagerness to beat the Russians at the space race.
Sputnik scared the crud out of America, but we soon had our champions. The Mercury Seven!
The movie doesn't ooze with as much jealousy as was written in the book, but the focus of Yeager on his own accomplishments during this time really comes off as a "look at me" attempt. He was given a chance to be part of the Mercury Astronaut core and apparently turned it down. One of America's best pilots, one of its uniformed sons, denying his country's call at their most pivotal hour??? There's nothing heroic in that act.
There's plenty of heroism, however, in the storied accomplishments of the Mercury Seven. And to be fair, Yeager went on to accomplish quite alot in the field of Aviation. Either way, the story is one that is important to our nation's history. I thoroughly enjoyed it, the truth and the fiction of it.
The Right Stuff is Real.......2007-04-02
Through great casting and near-perfect screenwriting, this movie presents the transformation of the U.S. following WWII to a space exploring nation. The movie is based on a stellar book by Tom Wolfe, and the depictions of his pilots-cum-astronauts as they struggle to retain their pilot identities within the confines of training for these first probes into space ring true. Poignantly, their experiences are contrasted with those of perhaps the greatest test pilot of that generation, Chuck Yeager, who never became an astronaut.
Trivializing An American Adventure.......2007-03-19
Although the movie is entertaining and has a fine cast, it is flawed in many respects. The viewer who sees it will not really learn anything important about the evolution of Project Mercury. Firstly, the engineers who designed the Mercury spacecraft are presented as a bunch of Teutonic dictators indifferent to the wishes of the astronauts. In reality, Wernher von Braun's Germans were not involved in the design of the spacecraft, only its Redstone booster rocket. In reality, the astronauts worked closely with the spacecraft's manufacturer, McDonnnell Aircraft in its development. I believe that the engineers are no less heroes than than the astronauts and many sacrificed their families and even their lives as a result of overwork, yet that is completely ignored in this story. Secondly, the way Gus Grissom is portrayed is outrageous in that he is presented as some sort of screw-up causing the sinking of his spacecraft, Liberty Bell 7. The fact that, in reality, he was assigned to the first flights of both the Gemini and Apollo spacecraft (where he lost his life in the Apollo 1 fire) shows that the NASA people had the highest confidence in his abilities. They wouldn't keep someone in the program just so that it wouldn't look to the outside world that there were failures as was proven by the fact that Scott Carpenter was not assigned to another flight due to his relatively poor performance in Aurora 7. Finally, John and Annie Glenn are presented as some kind of victims of Vice President's Johnson's ire. No one did more for the space program than LBJ who was a bigger supporter than even President Kennedy was and the Glenn's were personally enriched as a result of the controversial Life magazine contract with the astronauts which Kennedy and Johnson supported. I don't believe LBJ was some sort of ogre for wanting a little media coverage and he probably wasn't aware of Annie Glenn's stutter. I would compare this film to Oliver Stone's "JFK" which is also an entertaining, but unrelated to the true story.
For someone actually interested in the TRUE story about America's space program, I would recommend the film "Apollo 13" and the series "From the Earth to the Moon".
Thinking of showing this movie to your classroom?.......2007-03-09
I'll save you the time....don't show it. Although this is a wonderful movie, it is inappropriate for students of any age due to sexually explicit language. There are also many words that, although not new to students by any stretch of the imagination, shouldn't be used in the classroom setting.

Yum, yum more Stuff.......2007-06-30
This classic 80's B movie is really quite entertaining over 20 years later. I first watched this movie when I was a kid and I remember how much it captivated me. It was definately one of my favorites. I recently bought the dvd version. The movie made me nostalgic for the classic B movies that were more common not that long ago. The concept behind this movie is very good. How it's played out is what makes it special.
The story is rather simple. There is somthing bubbling out of the earth. It's not oil it's some strange substance that resembles yogurt. But this substance is odd and causes people to become addicted to it. Although most people can't see any negative side effects. Actually the effects are positive. More energy and the ability to lose weight causes this products popularity to skyrocket.
I will save the story for those who haven't seen it. There is a whole new crowd of teenagers and other B movie watchers who should love it's cheesy acting and subpar special effects. Sometimes it doesn't take a multimilliion dollar budget to make a good film. Sometimes all it takes is a good storyline. This movie is well worth the $5.99 price tag and could easily become a popular title in anyones DVD library. Once you get some of the Stuff you won't be able to resist.
Not Cheesy Enough For Me........2007-06-03
This movie wasnt really what I was expecting.I dont know why its found under a zombie movie category because it has nothing even close to a zombie. The plot is pretty good. Its a good idea and a amazing film considering the budget.I just expected more from it.The 2 or 3 gory scenes it has (Especially Chocolate Chip Charlys' demise) were really really awesome looking.I just expected more from it.Bottom line,I thought the movie drags most of the time.Gets kinda boring.Ill probably never watch it again, but its still worth a look.
Mmmmm, tasty!.......2007-05-14
The Stuff is quite possibly one of the greatest films ever made. Mo Rutherford and Chocolate Chip Charlie are two of cinema's greatest heroes. Although the effects are sometimes of a poor quality, the story, the characters and the acting are (in most cases) fantastic. I read another review that claimed "...no intelligent adult should watch this film". Whoever wrote this should be truely ashamed of this merciless attack on one of the most terrifying and hilarious films ever made. If Mo Rutherford actually existed I'd have him over to their house to sort them out.
My only complaint about the film is that Chocolate Chip Charlie doesn't feature enough. A man with such a cool name should definitely be given a greater role. His immortal line, "My hands are lethal weapons", is one of the greatest pieces of dialogue ever commited to film. Charlie's horrific death was a twist I never seen coming and to this day it haunts my dreams.
So, to summarise: The Stuff is one of the greatest purchases I have ever made. A truely fantastic film that both terrifies and delights in equal measures. Highly recommended.
5 stars for cheese.......2007-01-04
for absolute cheese value only, i give 5 stars.
The storyline is practically non existent, and the acting ability of the cast really should have been questioned back in the 80's, but for a walk down memory lane I couldnt beat it. One of only two "adult" rated films in the UK that I saw before I legally could, so I am slightly biased, but I loved it (the other was Nightmare on Elm St).
Acquire And Consume... .......2006-12-28
Larry Cohen's movies have always been good, schlocky fun. After all, he's the guy behind the great IT'S ALIVE trilogy, Q: THE WINGED SERPENT, and GOD TOLD ME TO. These movies are all packed w/ horror, comedy, weirdness, and Cohen's brand of interesting social commentary. THE STUFF needs to be seen in the same light, as a part of the Larry Cohen collection. It's message of commercial insanity and blind consumer idiocy is even more relevant today than it was in the '80s! THE STUFF is a wonderful metaphor. In this movie it's a totally addictive dessert (like a sweet, gooey version of crack cocaine), but it could stand for any product that we simply can't seem to live without. Ever seen two grown adults fighting over the last Elmo doll or video game console at christmas-time? It's pretty ugly! THE STUFF works because it tells us what we know but don't want to hear, that we are being duped by advertising gurus into buying anything they push on us. We are consumer zombies. Yep, we actually believe the commercials! Cohen's a genius. While THE STUFF is pure B-movie schlock, it's moral is clear: We truly ARE what we eat...

Grown-up?

BEACH BLANKET BINGO: Original Theatrical Trailer HOW TO STUFF A WILD BIKINI:
Customer Reviews:
Beach Movie.......2007-05-07
I loved being able to take a blast to the past, it would be great to have such fun. The movies were great and fun to watch. I can't wait to order more movies like this.
My copy is WIDESCREEN.......2007-04-02
I received my DVD the other day and watched both movies and enjoyed them very much. A few of the reviews here state "Wild Bikini" is full screen. My copy is WIDESCREEN as stated on the package. I don't know if they changed the format or what but BOTH of my movies are in widescreen as is shown on the dvd case.
Beach Blanket Bingo/ How to stuff a wild Bikini.......2007-03-16
Came in alittle after the rest of the order but in a decent time period. The movie was great. Fun to watch and very upbeat. Frankie Avalon is awesome.
Fun movies, incorrect labeling!.......2006-10-03
BEACH BLANKET BINGO is on one side of this DVD in Widescreen 2:35. HOW TO STUFF A WILD BIKINI is on the other side, but is in Pan and Scan, not the 2:35 listed on the packaging. However, fear not! There is a single disc release of HOW TO STUFF A WILD BIKINI which has Widescreen on one side, Pan and Scan on the other, and even though it's out of print, it shows up here at Amazon quite frequently. There is also a single disc edition of BEACH BLANKET BINGO, with P&S on one side and Widescreen on the other.
How to Stuff a Wild Bikini not w/s.......2006-09-01
FYI: On the cover of this dvd it states widescreen, only Beach Blanket Bingo is wide, presented in 2.35:1 and Wild Bikini should be the same, but it is the pan scan edition on this Midnight Movies double feature dvd.
I have the single edition of Wild Bikini and it has the choice of pan or wide.

New Orleans.......2007-06-16
Prefer live in Los Angeles instead of this DVD.
Poor Audio. Great Concert........2007-04-20
First, I have to say that the audio quality is poor. I got my system all set up to bump, like Maze was in my living room. What a disappointment! I adjusted my equalizer. I balanced. I did it all, but nothing rescued the audio from lowest depths of noise, distortion, and lack of dynamics. I got over it.
The concert was the B - O - M - B! For one thing, it proved that Frankie is the coolest person to walk the planet Earth. (Well, okay, Philip Bailey is right there with him.) I just love his groove. It was a great performance. Despite the audio quality, it still had that feeling that the band was in my living room.
What can you say about Maze's songlist? It was awesome!
Notice that I rate this DVD higher than both the Isley Brothers and Sade (I did write about those, didn't I)? They may have a better discography, but they don't perform it better. This is a great DVD, as long as you're just partying, and not picking on the audio. It's a "must buy" for old-schoolers like me.
Frankie.......2007-01-05
One of my best concert tapes, this one i recomend to all the fans of maze!! Great concert too!!
WONDERFUL!!!!!!.......2006-01-01
I enjoyed this concert. This whole concert is all of that. Frankie B. and Maze truly rocked the show. Words cannot describe. Frankie just have raw talent to get you up out of your seat. I would recommend this album to anyone who likes this group of musicians. My favorite performances are Look@California and Feel that Feeling you're feeling. But the best performance is 'Look at Ccalifornia'. Frankie and Maze really rocked the show with this song. I love this song they really rocked the show with this song. I watch this dvd and jump out of my seat. The quality is pretty good also, Also, this dvd contains some bonus footage some bonus music videos with some of my other favorites by the group Never Let You Down, We Are One, and Back In Stride. I love this dvd if you like this dvd then I would recommend that you buy Frankie Beverly Live in Los Angeles and also I recommend any MAZE fan to buy this dvd .
This Is NOT The Live In New Orleans I Know...........2005-05-19
Don't get me wrong this DVD is better than nothing but if you listen to the album (that's right I said album, will never buy the cd until it is no longer "the abridged version") it's not the same set. Now I could be crazy but I swear that I have seen the true "Live in New Orleans" on A&E or Bravo back in 1981/82 when the cable channel first started. They played the concert like everyday sometimes twice a day for about 2 to 3 months then never again. Another thing the concert they showed was outside like at a festival in New Orleans/SoCal or something in the daytime not in a arena. Up until then I had never seen Maze, didn't know who they were, only that when I was forever record shopping, there records always drew my eye cause of the six finger hand always on the front cover. So, after seeing Maze on cable 500 times at least, I was hooked and couldn't get Frankie's vocals out of my mind:-) Now I am 41 years old now and anybody I tell this to says I'm crazy that Maze was never on TV back then and that I must of been dreaming. Was I? I hope someone out there who loves Maze as much as I do can back me up. We need to get A&E or Bravo to release that version of Maze in New Orleans...I promise you folks it will blow this DVD out the door and into the trash can...I promise!!!!!

George's Best Stuff.......2007-01-10
A Readers Digest collection of mostly ancient bits of his youthful beginnings--much of the routines is dated, maybe funny then but our new youth may not relate. Still George, but he has certainly improved with age.
This is comedy like Robin Williams.......2004-08-13
Some of this stuff is from the 70's when George Carlin was young and in 1990, he looked a little bit older like in Scary Movie 3 where he looks like Santa Claus as "the architect". George Carlin is my personal favorite comedian and it's as good as Robin Williams-Live on Broadway.Recently, I heard that nowadays he wants to be taken more seriously.I think he would be very good in something serious. That's just me.
The emperor is naked!.......2004-03-24
This is my 2nd bunch of comments on this DVD, my first has not been posted, maybe it never will be. I hope not. I've thought the matter over. I've read a lot of reviews of Carlin since I discovered him the other day, and I've noticed that the people who worship him seem as a general rule to like violence in their "music" and their movies. (I've been reading other reviews by Carlin devotees.) I've also noticed that many if not most of the rave reviews (particularly one that praised his intelligence) are illiterate. A few reviews I agree with. Early, young Carlin was warmer, calmer, more human, more humane and just plain funnier. The comparison can be made on this DVD, because the last bit "Driving" was by an older Carlin. What were previously comical expressions on his face became grotesque manic grimaces, what was sly and warm became ferocious rage, what was controversial (and I get this also from the Jammin'/Doin' It DVD which I watched part of) became meaningless rantings. His early stuff was amusing (I prefer Bob Newhart) and I laughed some, it was not particularly insightful, some of his observations of life and things (eg the differences between dogs and cats, stuff, losing things) were clever and often dead-on. I obviously preferred the younger Carlin (and he was pretty then with all his hair, the older version simply didn't even look like him, whichever was the real him), and I thought the older Carlin was just an explosion of incoherent hatred. Vulgar (yay!), but to me not funny.
It's a Start, but it Could've Been So Much More.......2003-05-15
It is almost IMPOSSIBLE to successfully put together a "Best of Carlin" on CD or DVD. Why? Because it'd take up too much time. Carlin has done NUMEROUS bits that are now deemed classic, and personally I think almost everything the man does, is great. And yet, here is this DVD, "George's Best Stuff." Well, it is a start, but only covers SOME of the great things this very funny and unique man has said and done.
It's not a complete disappointment though. The bits and segments included are indeed funny. And, I love how a lot of the stuff included are from older shows and acts. I really do think Carlin shines the best in his older material, but the Carlin today is still very funny and on top of his game. It was nice to see some of these older bits from older shows, and I hope they come out on DVD sometime soon.
The DVD includes famous bits such as "Seven Dirty Words," "Stuff," "Al Sleet," "Dog Incident," "Fussy Eater," "Losing Things," "Driving," and much more. The DVD has a total of 17 chapters and adds up to the DVD being 87 minutes.
AH HA! There lies the problem. 87 minutes. ONLY 87 minutes?? 87 minutes for something with the title of "George's Best Stuff?" These 87 minutes should represent the entire comedy life of George Carlin? I hope not! Like I said, it's a nice start, but I think something of this magnitude should really be longer. There's so much that is left out on this DVD. So many classic bits that fail to appear on this package with the name "George's Best Stuff." The stuff that is included does indeed qualify as some of George's best bits, but I think there was a missed opportunity here. I really think more could've been done.
Is "George's Best Stuff" a complete disappointment? Of course not. Is it enjoyable to watch? Most definitely. Should Carlin fans check it out? By all means, yes. However, I really do believe more could've been done and that more could've been included. While "George's Best Stuff" isn't a total disappointment, it does leave you feeling that more could've and should've been done to honor the very title on the DVD cover, "George's Best Stuff." It's a start, but I'm afraid it is only that.
Our Greatest Comedian.......2002-07-11
This video shows a score of live performance bits, including the seven words in 3 or 4 of the performance bits. It shows him at various ages from young to balding and greying where you can see him performing live. It tops his CD's because you see him live and see and hear the auduence's break-up reactions. Carlin is unique and unsurpassed. I could not recommend this video more highly.

Interactive play is crucial to infant development and, like most infants, young puppet Eebee loves to learn by doing with the help of his animated caretaker Kristy. Eebee explores everyday objects like rice, crumpled paper, a cardboard box, and a variety of balls by touching, waving, pushing, and ripping to explore ideas like cause and effect, taking turns, and pre-math skills like more and less, empty and full, and big and little. Kristy is the ever-enthusiastic playmate, following Eebee's lead by noting Eebee's interest, offering encouragement, making simple games out of materials at hand, and putting the concepts being explored into words. Music abounds in the background and in songs with lyrics written by the show's producer. Footage of real infants interacting with the same materials as Eebee is interspersed throughout the program to demonstrate how children from 6 to 24 months might react and learn in similar situations. Eebee's Adventures is a product of the latest research on early childhood development and serves both as a stimulating program for infants and as a jumping off point to help new parents play with their infants in a meaningful and educational way. Bonus features include a developmental perspective by early childhood development experts (exactly the same on each Eebee program), a play by play guide highlighting the skills and developmental ages featured in each section of the program, music clips, and an interactive musical game. (Ages 6 months to 2 years) --Tami Horiuchi

We love Eebee!.......2007-03-08
My 22 month old son absolutely adores Eebee. He's been watching him for a few months now and never tires of it. He has learned so much from the videos. My only complaint would be that there are only 3 videos!
unbelievable.......2006-04-14
my son is yonger than six months and has been watching for some time he gets absorbed by this he smiles & laughs at it as soon as it comes on we love it
Great Ideas!!.......2005-10-07
I enjoyed all of the fun ideas for playtime that you see with Eebee and the children. It was also interesting to get to hear an analysis as to why these skills are important. I think the relaxed and fun atmosphere that the children are playing in was also inspiring. I don't always feel that relaxed atmosphere in my house, but when I am playing with my daughter (8 mos.) the way they did in the video I feel relaxed. Now I have a lot of great ideas for diverting her attention when she is trying to grab the dogs' noses!
Our Children Were Entranced.......2005-09-10
I have two children. They both loved watching the DVD. It seemed the perfect pace and had a good mix of entertainment and education. I was never able to keep them occupied as well with Baby Einstein. Great product!!!!
Twin Mom.......2005-09-10
My 14 month twin boys are glued to the tv when we watch Eebee together! They giggle when they see little Eebee and love when Eebee plays with the ball. As a mom, I love seeing their faces light up when we watch this DVD. A must for all- I have to get the other DVD's now too.

stinkin' hilarious.......2007-06-11
this is BY FAR the funniest stand-up comedy i've seen in years!!! literally, laugh out loud hilarious. i recommend it to anyone, especially those who love kevin james - it's clean AND funny - something rare in this day and age!
FUNNIEST STANDUP ROUTINE I HAVE EVER SEEN!.......2007-03-25
First of all let me say I am a huge Kevin James and King of Queens fan so I may be biased. However, I have seen tons of "Comedy Central Presents" routines and many hour comedy specials buy guys like Jeff Dunham, Christopher Titus, Dane Cook, etc and this is the funniest routine I have EVER seen. I have watched it at least 10 times and I still can laugh at it despite knowing every joke.
Kevin can make you laugh without using a sear word every other word. How does he do it? By telling jokes and stories about every day life. It makes it that much funnier when you can relate to jokes.
Bottom line: it may be expensive but it is well worth it. This is something you will enjoy over and over again.
Kevin (on this DVD) is GREAT, but...........2007-03-23
...I would not pay that much for this (or any other) DVD. I keep hoping that it will come out on iTunes. I just do not understand why they do not reissue it...I'm not paying some nutty scalper close to $100 for something they show on Comedy Central every so often. I can always just record it from there and watch it whenever I want!
KEVIN JAMES AT HIS BEST.......2007-01-01
If you like Kevin James in "King of Queens" you will absolutly love this. Kevin James is so funny about everyday issues. Love his body language. FUNNY FUNNY FUNNY
H-i-l-a-r-i-o-u-s!!!!!!.......2006-12-22
I don't know which is funnier on this DVD: Kevin James' material (normal everyday stuff that will make you laugh the next time it happens to you), or his delivery (from the facial experessions to the physical demostrations)...either way, this is a Fantastic, FUNNY DVD that will have you laughing throughout the entire performance, then wanting to share it with friends! Worth every penny and then some!Suitable for the whole family (and even the 'in-laws'!)...Buy it and enjoy it, over and over!!!!

CAPTAIN BEEFHEART (DON VAN VLIET) - SOME YO YO STUFF (CAPTAIN BEEFHEART)
Customer Reviews:
Not for the Faint of Heart.......2005-12-19
The short film on this DVD presents to the viewer an intimate portrait of a sadly deteriorated Don Van Vliet. I can only imagine how much his condition has likely worsened in the 10+ years since the making of this film. This film is very depressing to watch, but it is a curious document, if only because it is one of the few visual documents of Mr. Van Vliet since '82. The DVD is cheap enough to be a worthwhile purchase, but it is difficult to watch. I cannot believe that the man who once sang with such a deep, powerful, booming voice is now so physically and mentally compromised. Life is absolutely brutally cruel. I sincerely hope that the great captain is finding peace and solace these days.
beefy on film.......2005-11-10
Short , too short ,but, better than no Captain at all
Maybe I'm in the zoo..........2005-09-26
Directed by film maker Anton Corbijn, this 13 minute black and white short (made originally for television) is a Richard Bell production from 1993. Its tagline "an observation of the observations of Don Van Vliet" is right on the money.
Unless you are a true fan of Don Van Vliet/Captain Beefheart you might be disappointed having spent money on this disc, as this is not a documentary about his musical past; out of respect from the film maker there are no questions asked about it, and Don doesn't discuss it. No topics are discussed in much depth, but he does provide a few comments on Miles Davis, Roland Kirk, Frank Zappa, Piet Mondrian and Vincent Van Gogh, and quickly compares the art of painting with music. He talks about animals, which obviously is a big inspiration for his paintings, and his isolation from the outside world which he feels "touches too hard."
The only musical installments we get are two short home recorded demos - one from approximately 1982 of him singing "what are we gonna do with you" a cappella and one of him playing "Evening Bell" on piano (recorded 1969) with beautiful desert images in the background of various animals on display.
Making brief appearances are Anton Corbijn (introducing his short film,) Don's mother, Sue Vliet (introducing her son and planting the "Ice Cream for Crow" picture of him on the desert ground,) and David Lynch (asking Don a couple of questions.)
This DVD has no extras, so aside from the newly released Magic Band reunion concert and "Crow's Milk" documentary DVD (available through subdiva,) these 13 minutes are all that is available on DVD displaying Don Van Vliet at the moment. For that reason, and for the fact that the directing of this film is highly impressive, it should be treasured by true fans of his genius.
Hopefully there is more Captain Beefheart (and The Magic Band) material to be released on DVD soon, because there are lots of made for TV documentaries, concerts and interviews (and the "Ice Cream for Crow" video) on tapes collecting dust in various parts of the world at the moment. It's only a matter of budget, because obviously there is interest, and this is a nice ap?ritif.
Does he suffer from Multiple Sclerosis?.......2004-08-26
According to the Web site "All About Multiple Sclerosis":
"Don Van Vilet (aka Captain Beefheart), the Rock 'n' Roll singer, does not have MS" (sic)

Ignore my rating, my 5 stars is only out of respect to Don Van Vliet
A rare look at what Van Vliet is up to now..........2004-02-15
Don Van Vliet permanently hung up his well-known-Zappa-given moniker "Captain Beefheart" forever in 1982 with his final album "Ice Cream for Crow". What a way to go out! He then basically traded his microphone for a paintbrush, and began a very successful career as an abstract painter. Here's how successful it has been: If you want to get an original Van Vliet painting to hang on your wall, be prepared to shell out at least 5 figures. It's possible that Van Vliet may be making more money as a painter than he ever did as "Captain Beefheart". Sadly, though his painting career is going extremely well, he also has been suffering from multiple sclerosis.
"Some YoYo Stuff" is a great tribute to the man who was "Captain Beefheart" and who is still very much Don Van Vliet. The movie is not about Captain Beefheart (even though a huge sticker on the box yells "A MOVIE STARRING CAPTAIN BEEFHEART") but about Don Van Vliet, and almost exclusively about Don Van Vliet the painter. Some incredible piano pieces of Van Vliet's provide accompaniment to some amazing filmed images (my favorite is the fish over the desert), and David Lynch admits his favorite piece is "The Dust Blows Forward and The Dust Blows Back", but that's the closest this movie comes to the Captain.
The film is a series of images with Van Vliet speaking. You see Don Van Vliet (yes, it's really him) in front of what looks like a screen. The screen projects questions that are never vocally asked, but are answered by Van Vliet, but not by the Van Vliet on the screen. The Van Vliet on the screen never talks, but he does smoke a cigar and gesture. The topics range from favorite paintings to Frank Zappa to Van Vliet's "message to the people watching" (worth the price of admission alone). Van Vliet's voice is obviously burdened and weary, but the content is amazing, funny, and poignant (listen for his comments on how he hopes that animals are smart enough to stay away from people).
Much of Van Vliet's dialogue echoes a radio/phone interview that Van Vliet gave in 1993 to a Dutch radio station (clips of this are available on the internet). This is, I believe, one of the last audio interviews with Van Vliet known of (I could be completely wrong, and if I am, please send me a link). Assuming that his condition has worsened since this film and the interview (both dated 1993), Van Vliet may no longer be capable of granting interviews. Let's hope that's not the case.
If you're interested at all in what Don Van Vliet is up to these days, this film is one of the few audio/visual sources of information. It is also a great tribute to an underrated and underappreciated artist and his work.
