Oscar®-winner Adrien Brody has a nifty role in Dummy as a shy loser whose life is transformed by... ventriloquism. Living with his parents and his caustic sister (Illeana Douglas in good form), tongue-tied Steven can't hold a conversation to save his life--until he sits a wooden dummy on his knee. Others find this kind of creepy, but Steven parlays his newfound voice into a date with his pretty lady at the unemployment office (she's played by Vera Farmiga, from 15 Minutes, a soulful actress destined for big things). Writer-director Greg Pritikin doesn't oversell this modest premise, instead nicely filling in the corners with sly comedy and character bits. Milla Jovovich plays Steven's punk-rock buddy, and Jessica Walter and Ron Leibman are his parents--it's a surprisingly strong cast for an indie effort. Dummy won a release when Brody got the Oscar for The Pianist, but this is a worthy and entertaining picture all on its own. --Robert Horton

Description
Academy Award®-winner Anthony Hopkins (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS) is Corky, a painfully shy, failed magician who finds overnight success as a ventriloquist. His brash, foul-mouthed dummy, Fats, becomes a huge nightclub hit. With his star on the rise, talent agent Ben Greene (Burgess Meredith) arranges an important shot at national TV. But the pressure of failing the network's required physical sends Corky into a panic. With Fats in tow, he flees the city to a nearly-deserted resort in the Catskills run by the love of his youth, Peggy Ann Snow (Ann-Margret).
Peg's spent years trapped in a loveless marriage with her high-school sweetheart, Duke. In Corky, she sees the chance for a loving relationship and accepts an offer to run away with him. After they make love, Corky confides to Fats that he may leave show business altogether. Fats becomes furious and lashes out at him, playing on his guilt and insecurity. Now under Fats' control, Corky is manipulated into a series of violent and unexpected confrontations.
Based on the best-selling novel by William Goldman and directed by Sir Richard Attenborough (A BRIDGE TOO FAR, GANDHI), MAGIC's stellar performances and shocking conclusion make for gripping suspense from beginning to end.
Customer Reviews:
Pure psychological terror!.......2007-06-29
Magic is one of those rare cinematic gems that deserves a wider viewership. The story centers around Corky [played to great effect by Anthony Hopkins] who is shy and self-effacing, and desperate for a break in showbiz. His luck turns around when he comes across a ventriloquists' doll, Fats that is incorporated into his act, bringing him fame and fortune. His agent, Ben Green [Meredith Burgess] gets him a TV stint, but Corky refuses to get a physical 'on principle'. He flees in a panic, and ends up in his hometown, where he stops by a rental cabin that, as it turns out, is owned by Peg [Ann Margret] a girl he had a crush on back in high school. This is where things start to escalate, for the worse, as Fats doesn't 'seem' too happy about Corky's affection for Peg, and acts out in a jealous rage...worse still, matters get complicated when the agent, Ben tracks Corky down, and the appearance of Peg's husband. The movie is held together by the spellbinding performance of Anthony Hopkins. He actually trained for the role, and Fats' voice is all his. The frustrations, and conflicts that Corky goes through is vividly evoked by Hopkins' facial expressions and suitably modulated voice. The supporting characters are equally effective - Ann Margret's Peg & Burgess Meredith's Ben are the most convincing. The effects are more old school, no CGI here - but very effective is conveying a sense of menace in the atmosphere, that there is something darker to the relationship between man and doll. Question is: who is orchestrating whom here? Is Corky being controlled by Fats or the other way around, or is there a supernatural undertone here. You'll have to view this movie to find out, but its worth it. The extras are pretty good too - there is a featurette titled "Fats and Friends' that traces the history of ventriloquism & the movie. Also included here is an interview with Hopkins. Final verdict - eminently watchable suspense flick with a psychological twist.
MAGIC is FUN...WE'RE DEAD.......2007-06-19
I've been waiting for a decent DVD "print" of this movie for years. This is really a find. The transfer is amazing and the special features are well worth the ticket price.
The disc even includes the famous TV commercial that scared so many kids the networks had it pulled. 'Didn't matter. If you saw it once, it stuck in your head....
"Magic is fun....We're Dead!"
The soundtrack is MONO but that's the way it was released in the theaters and it sounds really rich.
I'm giving this one 5 stars for good reasons.
Magic is Purely Magical. A Minor Masterpiece........2007-06-12
There is no way I would even attempt to outshine the two current spotlight reviews by Kona, dated August 30, 2003 and by Michael R. Gates, dated May 1, 2006 which are excellent. If they aren't still spotlighted by the time you read this minor review by me, then look for them by their dates. They are truly superior reviews.
This film is an outstanding achievement in acting by Anthony (The Silence of the Lambs) Hopkins, and directing by the legendary actor and director Sir Richard Attenborough (The Great Escape and Jurassic Park for acting and A Passage to India and Gandhi) for directing. Of course, both Hopkins and Attenborough are known for their many other works. Additional fine acting is to be seen and enjoyed in Ann-Margret (Viva Las Vegas) and Burgess (Rocky) Meredith's roles. Even the type-casting of Ed (The Longest Yard) Lauter as the heavy is well-played.
Of course, without William Goldman's original novel and film adaptation, we wouldn't have this great story and although one can't say that it's original, as we've seen this issue on both the large and small screen before, it is compellingly done here and, again, much credit to the flawless acting by Hopkins who evokes both great sympathy and great dread and the extraordinary directorial skills of Attenborough.
This is a minor masterpiece and I wrote about it as I know that it is also fairly much forgotten and deserves recognition. In spite of knowing the ending after seeing it once, thus the mystery is over, it does have great repeat quality to it as the story is so cleverly told and acted. Purchase this little gem; you won't regret it.
A little more money than what I expected to spend on in........2007-05-17
This is a good movie. My husband enjoyed it. I wasn't too impressed with the price of the movie since it was an older film.
Hopkins IS Magic!.......2007-05-09
Great movie! Anthony Hopkins is just amazing, as always. His mannerisms, his voice... for God's sake, the guy can even sweat on command!
This is a horror flick that works for all ages. Great to watch alone, or with the whole fam. Great acting and an enjoyable story that doesn't rely on blood and gore, just tons of "Old School" creep factor!

totally new dvd for a great price. i will def' purchase from this seller again!
TRAPPED IS RIGHT.......2007-03-21
Ole Chuck Connors was out of character in this one. It ended on a weird note. I think they need to tell what happened after the girl got away, and what did she do with her friends?
Tourist Trap.......2007-02-13
A forgotten 80's gem. I remember watching this movie as a little girl and it scared me so bad that I had nightmares for a week. I had just purchased it after not seeing it for over $ years (women never tell their age--giggle) and it still gave me the creeps. Conners does a great job as a psycho. He and his mechanical mannequins are homicidal.
A bunch of teenagers get a flat tire in the boonies and tresspass on his land. At first he is hospitable, until he gains their trust (of course). They all get it one by one. I do not want to ruin the entire movie for those who have not had the pleasure. Pick up a copy, its fun!!
Guns and dolls.......2006-10-24
(3.5/5) Three young women and two young men are stranded when both of their cars experience trouble. Coming to their rescue is a lonely widower, who bides his time grieving for his wife and the tourist resort the two had planned to build. As luck would have it, his wife is now dead and the new highway diverts traffic away from his place. Only he and Davey remain, though the kids should steer clear of Davey and his house. Probably has something to do with his telekinesis, about which he complains, "I shouldn't have to hide it. It feels good." One of the three women, Molly, has the misfortune of resembling Mr. Slausen's dead wife. The film isn't really scary, though some pretty odd behavior, decent writing and acting keep this one entertaining throughout. It has a good cast, with Chuck Connors as Mr. Slausen, and Tanya Roberts, Robin Sherwood and Jocelyn Jones as the three lovely stranded lasses. Also of note is Pino Donaggio's musical score, whose quirkiness sometimes works well within the framework and other times clashes with it. At the very least, the producers should be commended for using an original score and an orchestra rather than the ubiquitous cheesy horror movie synthesizer. The Cult Video DVD picture looks good and there is director commentary and numerous trailers.
A late 70's cult horror classic!.......2006-08-03
A group of travelers that just ran out of gas goes into a weird wax museum called "Saluesen's Lost Oasis" owned by a strange man named Saluesen (Chuck Conners)as the mannequins are controlled by some mysterious force made by a madman who wants the travelers dead.
One of the most underappreciated horror movies of the 70's! this Charles Band production is a unique and scary low budget shocker for it's time that has gained a cult following combining thrills and psychological themes along without having to result in gore like the usual slasher flick. It keeps the viewer on the edge of their seats with great tension and atmsophere, this is truly a diamond in the rough of the genre and is worth watching.
This DVD has good picture and sound quality although there is some slight grain in a few scenes and the extras include bios, audio commentary and trailers especially to this movie.

Customer Reviews:
Dummy is one smart movie.......2006-12-08
Dummy is one of those movies you go in not expecting to like, but you wind up falling in love with. A quirky comedy with an offbeat sense of humor it'll have you laughing so hard your stomach will hurt. I'm so glad I didn't miss this intelligent clever comedy. It's one of the best movies I've seen in years.
Dummy follows the story of Steven, a shy late twenties man who lives with his dysfunctional parents and bitter sister. Fired from his dead-end job he decides to buy a ventriloquist's dummy and embark on his lifelong dream of becoming a ventriloquist. He goes down to the unemployment office and becomes attracted to his counselor Lorena on the first meeting. (I love how they're both wearing the same bland outfit; a wonderful comment on the stifling conformity of the workplace.) The dummy becomes an extension of Steven's personality and helps him overcome his shyness. With the help of his foul-mouthed tomboy friend Fangora he starts to pursue a romance with Lorena. Despite a series of blunders, (I love the scene where Fangora goes to the unemployment office. It's so funny it'll make you cry, ditto the crazy scene where he spray paints a thank-you note on her door) Steven manages to go on a few dates with Lorena. Just when things are about to get close, she breaks it off with Steven. He thinks it's his weirdness, but it's her own fears of failure in past relationships that cause the separation. At a Jewish wedding Fangora and Steven perform at, things reach a climax as he overcomes his shyness to win the woman he truly loves.
This is a great movie; like another one of my favorite movies, How U Like Me Now it uses a simple story as a platform to develop complex multileveled characters. Each character in Dummy struggles to overcome a fear inside themselves and it's ironic that these inner struggles contrast the exterior personality they express. Steven is shy on the outside, but his dummy's alter ego is extremely confident. Fangora is a foul mouthed extrovert but is extremely withdrawn when confronted by her mother about her Jewish heritage. Lorena is a woman who is the picture of stability and secure on the outside but is extremely insecure. Steven's sister Heidi is a wedding planner who can't maintain a relationship. Steven's mother always comforts everyone with food because she can't express her emotions in a constructive manner. Steven's father spends most of his time making model ships of past wars but is afraid to confront the turmoil in his own home. Each of the characters with the exception of Steven's parents find true happiness when they embrace the inner parts of their personalities they have conflict with and pursue their dreams Steven finds happiness in his ventriloquism, Fangora when she embraces her Jewish heritage by performing traditional Jewish songs, Heidi when she sings at the reception and Lorena when she stands up to a former boyfriend.
Director Greg Pritkin creates well-crafted film. He tells the stories of all these quirky offbeat characters beautifully. It's easy to identify with each of them and their struggles; being shy myself I could particularly relate to what Steven was going through in his life. Production values on Dummy are top notch. I especially love the cinematography; I felt like I was walking on those suburban streets. The screenplay is well written with some hilarious lines too good to spoil.
The acting in this film is some of the best I've ever seen. Adrien Brody is in top form as Steven capturing his shyness (he even does his own ventriloquism) beautifully. Mila Jovovich gives the best performance of her career as Fangora. She steals all the scenes she's in; I wish she'd do more films like this instead of fanticrap like Resident Evil and Fifth Element. A few more quality films like Dummy would elevate her into the A-list where she belongs. Jessica Walter and Ron Leibman are hilarious as Steven's parents. Vera Farmiga gives a strong performace as Lorena. She plays the counselor with great depth expressing her fear and insecurities. Illeana Douglas is brilliant as Heidi. You feel all her frustrations but understand where she's coming from. Jared Harris is extra creepy as Heidi's greasy accountant ex-boyfriend.
Dummy is a top ten Shawn James essential video. Pick this one up along with the Clockwatchers How U like Me Now, two other great independent films.
One Funny Movie, You Dummy!!.......2006-10-05
Oh, My Gawd, this movie is HILARIOUSLY, FUNNY!! It had me and my husband cracking up with laughter in almost every scene due to the dialogue between a whacky cast of characters, the physical humor/comedy, and the circumstances of the characters themselves!
Adrien Brody stars in the leading role as Steven, a quiet, shy introverted loser, still living at home with his parents, despite being in his late twenties! Steven's parents are completely dysfunctional and out of touch with reality altogether. Also living at home are Steven's senile grandma and his adult, embittered/caustic sister who has given up on life & her dream of becoming a singer. She reluctantly becomes a wedding planner. To top it all off, she's also being stalked by a deranged ex-fiance, whom her mother stills wants her to marry!
Steven is fired from his day job and in turn decides to purchase a wooden dummy and become a ventroliquist---- a life long dream! The "dummy" becomes Steven's alter ego and helps him come out of his shell and become a better person. He falls in love with his career counselor and attempts to make a love connection with his career counselor with the help of his best friend, Fangora (or Fanny to her friends), played by Milla Jovovich.
In Fact, Milla Jovovich steals every scene in this movie with her acting skills and gives a performance NOT TO BE MISSED! She is sooooo funny in this movie!
Quirky but nothing special.......2006-07-31
Dummy was made a few years before its release. After star Adrien Brody's subsequent Oscar win for The Pianist, this movie found renewed interest. However, though it has some quirky characters and an offbeat story, it was not particulary entertaining. Brody's character was a wimpy social-stunted failure, and his family members had issues of their own. Filthy-mouthed friend Fangora (Milla Jovovich) provides some humor, though her character was generally a nut case.
Extras include deleted scenes, some ventriloquism pointers, and a lackluster commentary by ventriloquist Jeff Dunham and characters (though his own DVD is hiliarious.) Note it seems like there is a format problem with the disk, but make sure BOTH the DVD player and TV are set to 16:9 or widescreen, and it will look OK. The credits make a point that Brody did all the puppet voices. Only recommended for fans of Adrien Brody, Illeana Douglas or Milla Jovovich.
Funny!.......2006-06-02
I found "Dummy" a really enjoyable film. Seeing Oscar winner Adrien Brody doing something different was refreshing. Other excellent performances from Illeana Douglas (always good), Milla Jonovich as the wacky singer and I laughed out loud with the comedy bits between the bride, Poppi Kramer & groom, Lawrence Leritz, who falls asleep at the wedding reception. Good low budget indie.
You Dummy.......2006-06-02
"Dummy" is one of the weirdest, most heartwarming indie films that most moviegoers have never seen. Unless they are rabid Adrian Brody fans.
That's unfortunate, because this wild, slightly surreal film is enormous fun. It starts off with a quirky family, like a suburban Wes Anderson story, but slowly becomes something more heartwarming as the hero learns to follow his bliss. It's weird enough to be cool, but sweet enough to give you the warm fuzzies.
Steven Schoichet (Adrian Brody) is a suburban Dilbert. His job is a dead end, and he's still living with his battleship-building dad, his sweetly oblivious mom and his embittered sister Heidi (Illeana Douglas). On impulse, he decides to buy a ventriloquist's dummy and learns how to use it. This, he decides, is his new job.
Making things more complex is the fact that he is falling in love with his unemployment counsellor (Vera Farmiga). Punk-rocker Fangora (Milla Jovovich) decides to help Steven win her over, despite his weird family. But her advice only causes more problems, and soon Steven has to learn that the real him is the most attractive. Will the dummy help Steven find love, or will he lapse back into his dreary, passionless life?
It's definitely a variation on a typical movie plot: Boy meets dummy. Dummy helps boy meet girl. Boy loses girl. Dummy helps boy pluck up the courage to get girl back. Yup, this is not your typical movie, since the hero's sidekick is a wooden doll.
But while that's the surface of it, the real plot of "Dummy" is about following your bliss, whether it's your soulmate, a wooden dummy, a career or your art. In other words, cast off your "realistic" life if it doesn't make you happy, and just follow what you secretly long to do. You'll be happier for it.
Yeah, it sounds mushy. But it's wrapped up in a plot so offbeat you won't notice, especially since there is a subplot about Fanny's punk band having to learn Yiddish klezmer music. Writer/director Greg Pritikin directs like a more relaxed Wes Anderson, with odd camerawork and deadpan humor ("You look like a child molester!" Heidi says about the dummy).
All the actors in this are good, no matter how minor their roles. Adrian Brody does a wonderful job as a Steven, whose real personality only shines through when he has his dummy to speak for him. He's sweet, sensitive and downtrodden. And Jovovich steals each scene as the foul-mouthed, fatigue-clad, shoplifting, exuberant and wild Fanny, who lives for her punk music.
Romantics and black comedy fans will enjoy "Dummy," with its weird characters and oddball humor. Follow your bliss.

Goosebumps,Please!.......2006-08-05
This is a real wonderful movie for kids and almost every kid wants to see a scary movie but to scared but this is a scary kids movie. Even some kids might like it because they love the books. The dummy Slappy is not a normal dummy. It walks at. It stalks your every move. It watches you DAY & NIGHT!
Goosebumps Movies.......2005-10-30
I love all of the Goosebumps Movies but i think everyone agrees that R.L Stine needs to release some more movies on VHS and DVD!
Anyone 7 and older probably dosn't think they are very scary but they are very good gifts 4 people who are 6 and under and who like the flesh to jump of of their bones!
P.S Buy Some!

Best movie ever!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-09-25
It's simply the best movie ever made. I am upsessed with it!!!
TWISTED AND CRUDE!.......2005-08-19
This is the second episode about Slappy. It's kinda good and kinda crappy, but mostly so-so. Even though the acting sucks, the story is terrible and the ending's real corny and it dosen't show Slappy much, I still suggest it to anyone.
Really good but could've been better..........2005-04-22
I have to admit I like all the Goosebumps books and movies, especially Night of the Living Dummy. This one was as great as the first for some reason... but I don't think all of em are freaky, but this one sorta was...

Description
This 90-minute movie documents their recent tours of Japan and Mexico. Includes insane live performances (over twenty songs) and all the behind-the-scenes mayhem you'd expect. From riots in Mexico City to DIY stitches and multiple emergency room visits, "Can't Stop Us" captures all the action. A must own for the band's rabid fan base.

A taste of old-school, down-and-dirty touring the hard way.......2006-04-27
The Good
Can't Stop Us is more of a documentary than is a concert video. The first half of the DVD focuses on the punk group's tour in Mexico. This section is padded heavily with behind-the-scenes material. In between that you do get some live performances, but most are not presented to completion of the song. It was interesting to see how rabid the fans were for this group. I have never heard of them, but clearly the people of Mexico have. There were two interesting segments that caught my attention.
The first took place in Mexico City. The Casualties were set to play a festival type show with a 2am set time. The set time wasn't the shocking part. The shocking part was when a gang of kids decided that they didn't want to pay to get into the show. All hell broke loose and the show was eventually postponed to the next day. The fear that the band was experiencing was quite genuine. The second incident took place the next day when the show finally went on. A fan was heckling the band when frontman Jorge brought him on stage to find out why.
This guy goes into a rant on how The Casualties are Capitalists for charging $15 dollars for a concert. The guy had a lot of balls, and The casualties showed a lot of restraint. It just goes to show you that everyone doesn't have it as good as the U.S. and other countries. The second half of the DVD highlights a tour through Japan. You can clearly see a difference in culture from the Mexico tour. This portion of the DVD focuses more on the wild and frenzied live performances. It still has its share of interesting tour footage.
The Bad
You can't just go into this blind, you really have to be a fan of the group to enjoy it thoroughly.
The Verdict
It's nice to know that The Casualties are out there keeping the spirit of punk rock alive. On their latest DVD you really do get to see a different side of the music industry. Instead of the typical big production shows you get with concert DVDs, with top-notch lighting, a huge stage, a packed arena, and perfect sound; Can't Stop Us now gives you a taste of old-school, down-and-dirty touring the hard way. I don't think The Casualties would have it any other way.
Finally after two years of waiting plus...it's here!.......2006-04-05
Ahoy, Casualties fan's we finally have their new release of this dvd that's been promised to the fans for almost two plus years... Well, it's here finally here.... A few years back the Casualties moved on to greener pastures so, to speak from odd ball punk labels to pushing forward dave's punkcore label to putting jake into self labeling vie his Charged records they finally stepped for better or worse into success.....So, from ignoring stupid labels that picked up bands such as the Total Choas (who for bad reasons still thrive) to other sell outs such as rancid, the 10 million plus seller offspring they finally stepped up to a label that has some distro push yet, didn't sell them out hence comes SideOneDummey.....(interestingly enough this label is co owned by a Foo-Fighters member look it up on your own) So, anyways this dvd has come out.....It's promoting the tour of On The Front Line/ En La Linea Del Frente. As like previous Casualties live videos theres the live stuff and in between stuff.... But, unlike the previous vhs tapes theres more behind story..... The Mexico part has a lot of the craziness behind touring Mexico......It shows a rather interesting part of Mexico's punk scene....Which is interesting while the live set's are one song here and there and some are rather cut.... Second half of the disc is longer and is in the rising sun Japan.... Here there's less in between show stuff which kinda sucks because it would have been intersting to see more of the Japanese sub-culture of punk yet, they do have an ok amount of it and unlike the mexican half theres more show footage and full song's played out. The only down side is on some of the Japanese shows the audio quality is sub-par while the mexican half has good audio but, some sub-par visuals...... Most of the songs on this dvd are from their last lp "On the Front Lines/En La Linea Del Frente" But, theres some classic songs on here too.... If you're a fan this a decent live set collection and show's an interesting side of punk in two famlier countries yet, most punks have yet, to see these scene's first hand...... So, here you go see it first hand vie the Casualties!

Description
The MythBusters, Jamie and Adam, two special effects experts with over 30 years experience between them, set out to methodically bust three urban legends in each episode. They will apply modern day science with age-old legends and modern-day myths to prove or disprove what is real and what is truly urban legend. They don't just tell the myths, they'll put them to the test. MythBusters answers three diverse questions. Those with an eye for history will learn whether a crude form of battery was invented more than two thousand years ago. Those interested in technology will learn how to rebuild a crash test dummy (REBUILDING BUSTER). The new, improved, human-like, fire proof Buster 2.0 is strapped into Earl the Caddy, which a crane raises to sixty feet up, and drops. The result is baptism of destruction for Buster, and a hi-speed, hi-impact crash the likes of which the viewers have never seen before. And everybody else will learn the fastest way to COOL A SIX-PACK of beer, exploring traditional methods of ice, and water, fridges, freezers and fire, to be consumed while watching tv and learning about ANCIENT BATTERIES and crash test DUMMIES..
