After building up the duo's popularity through recordings and several performances on Saturday Night Live, John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd--as "legendary" Chicago blues brothers Jake and Elwood Blues--took their act to the big screen in this action-packed hit from 1980. As Jake and Elwood struggle to reunite their old band and save the Chicago orphanage where they were raised, they wreak enough good-natured havoc to attract the entire Cook County police force. The result is a big-budget stunt-fest on a scale rarely attempted before or since, including extended car chases that result in the wanton destruction of shopping malls and more police cars than you can count. Along the way there's plenty of music to punctuate the action, including performances by Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Cab Calloway, and James Brown that are guaranteed to knock you out. As played with deadpan wit by Belushi and Aykroyd, the Blues Brothers are "on a mission from God," and that gives them a kind of reckless glee that keeps the movie from losing its comedic appeal. Otherwise this might have been just a bloated marathon of mayhem that quickly wears out its welcome (which is how some critics described this film and its 1998 sequel). Keep an eye out for Steven Spielberg as the city clerk who stamps some crucial paperwork near the end of the film.--Jeff Shannon

They Broke My Watch.......2007-05-12
Have you ever had one of those days where you feel tired and alittle bored and depressed? You need a pick-me-up. If that is you, then don't waste anytime. Pop this in your DVD player and start feeling happy. This movie is the purfect cure for a bad day. It makes you laugh hysterical. It is just plain fun. The comedy, the music, the romance, the ridiculous car chases. It's got everything for everybody. And it's done perfectly. Dan and John have fantastic chemistry together and there both remarkably funny. the whole cast is grade-A. How can you go wrong with Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, James Brown, John Candy, Cab Calloway, and director John Landis? You can't. The music is so good, you can't help but dance alittle bit. It's way better then what they call music today. And how can I forget: the car chases. The car chases in this film are the best I have ever seen. THIS IS NOT EVEN A ACTION MOVIE! That shows you how great this movie is. It is wall to wall fun. It's gotta be the greatest musical ever. It's definetly in my top 5 for my favorite movies ever. Everytime I watch it, it makes me smile. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

My husband never saw this film. He enjoyed it but the CD had a problem with the voice being out of sync with the lip movement. Not a serious fault but it was annoying.

It's hard to ignore the sad and conspicuous absence of the late John Belushi, but this long-delayed sequel to 1980's The Blues Brothers still has Dan Aykroyd--as Chicago bad boy and blues rocker Elwood Blues--to keep the music alive. Once again, Elwood's trying to reunite the original Blues Brothers Band, and this time he's got a strip-joint bartender (John Goodman) and a 10-year-old orphan named Buster (J. Evan Bonifant) joining him at center stage. Believing that Elwood has kidnapped the kid, the cops are hot on his trail as the reunited band hits the road for the Battle of the Bands in Louisiana and the All-Star Blues Jam that ends the movie in a rockin' blaze of glory. It's a shameless clone of the first film, and nobody--especially not Aykroyd or director John Landis--seems to care that the story's not nearly as fun as the music that's used to stretch it out. Of course there's a seemingly endless parade of stunts, including a nonstop pileup of police cars that's hilariously absurd, but what really matters here--indeed, the movie's only saving grace--is the great lineup of legendary blues musicians. Aretha Franklin, James Brown, Junior Wells, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Jonny Lang, Eddie Floyd, and Blues Traveler are among the many special guests assembled for the film, and their stellar presence makes you wonder if the revived Blues Brothers shouldn't remain an obscure opening act. The collector's edition DVD includes production photos, the theatrical trailers, and a behind-the-scenes featurette about the making of the film including interviews with the principal cast. --Jeff Shannon

Blues Brothers 2000.......2007-04-08
Not as good as the first movie, of course, but worth a look.
music is life.......2007-03-27
I have The Blues Brothers DVD and CD soundtrack
along with the VHS BB 2000 and CD-Gimme Some Lovin'
I prefer the sequal to the original but I wouldn't have one without the other. The original I just had to have in my inventory because of John Belushi.
At first I didn't think I'd like BB 2000 much but John Goodman's performance was tops; the best replacement for Belushi.
The music was fantastic [Cab Calloway-Minnie the Moocher/Aretha Franklin, Think and the song Sweet Home Chicago]
The stunts with the cars had me laughing [I've a quirky sense of humor] I am from Illinois and laugh at certain types of authoritarian stupidity.
If you're a blues fan musically, you just might enjoy this production. It's not the greatest story ever told but it does represent a moment in time. If all you want to do is enjoy watching without being a critic, this just might be as enjoyable to you as it is for me. I love it.
If Dan Aykroyd decides to make a 3rd movie for the Blues Brothers, I'll buy it. Some of the great artists have passed: it's a treat to see them as though they were still with us, providing the great music of their life.
not all bad.......2007-02-19
If nothing else, you gotta love the music. You just can't have the Blues Brothers without John Belushi.
I love this movie! .......2006-11-17
I have to admit this is the only Blues Brothers movie I really like. The musical performances are amazing, it's like a concert with a plot. It's about half movie and about half celebrity guest performances.
great music review.......2006-10-20
Like the first Blues Brothers flick, this film offers lots of car chases/wrecks, lots of fantastic production numbers from the stars of R&B, and a major dose of silliness. The focused energy and star quality of Belushi isn't found in 2000 but the music from the guest stars is better in the new movie. The biggest mistake was focusing on Akroyd's low-key character which works as second banana but not as the lead role. Like the first film, the reputation of Blues Brothers 2000 will improve with age.

Few things can be more noble than a wholehearted effort to tell the story of black secular music in America, especially through the eyes of a mid-20th century rhythm-and-blues vocal group breaking through race barriers to popular success. Comedian and filmmaker Robert Townsend's The Five Heartbeats (1991) is one such ambitious effort. If its story frequently sags under epochal burdens, the film makes up for it with a surprisingly tough look at the music business and classy appearances by Diahann Carroll and hoofer Harold Nicholas. Townsend plays one-fifth of the titular act, whose collective life and times we follow from 1965 to the 1990s, through friendships, break-ups, and re-groupings. The director's script, cowritten with Keenen Ivory Wayans, is wobbly and short on good material for the women in the cast. But several of the male actors are quite strong, particularly John Canada Terrell as an original Heartbeats replacement. --Tom Keogh
Description
Get ready to be rocked to your soul by The Five Heartbeats! This Motown-flavored masterpiece is the story of five young friends drawn together by music. Their dream of success takes them from amateur nights in ghetto clubs to the pinnacle of show business success and personal tragedy.
Customer Reviews:
Cheesy.......2007-06-16
Cheesy acting and predictable you see everything coming. This movie does not miss a single cliché.
Great performances from the entire cast.................2007-04-19
Well written and detailed account of 60's soul groups. Does not disappoint. Check it Out!
I'll review this version rather than the movie as a whole........2007-04-06
Why? Because if you're here, you probably already saw the movie and are just curious about this release version. So I'll tell you about it.
First, the good:
- Comes with the official movie soundtrack. I mean the FULL soundtrack, it's a separate disc.
- Video transfer is done a lot better than the original DVD release.
- Case is designed a lot more appealing than the standard black and blue.
- Audio is better encoded and easier to hear at lower volumes.
- Lots of extras, including some fluff, but hey.
- Better aspect ratio, as the picture fills widescreen displays more evenly without stretching.
Now, the bad:
- The soundtrack...it's so irritating to listen to, because they managed to do the true movie version of "Nothing But Love" and some other songs, fresh from the movie, but yet "Nights Like This" is that After 7 version. I don't mind the After 7 version, it's not bad, but I wanted to hear the movie version. This is especially troublesome when they even managed to do that Byrd song fresh from the movie.
- Some of the footage that never made it in the movie SHOULD have. Like the scene where Duck is explaining that all of the members can sing all different levels. It would explain a later scene when Choirboy offers to sing in Eddie's place - when I watched the first version I was confused. A soprano singing a baritone's parts? Also, there were some slight comedy pieces in there that should have been included.
- Some of the extras are just flat out pointless - or if they wanted to include them at least include the characters people cared about. There's one extra where the actors in kayfabe are giving their thoughts before accepting 'awards'. Totally corny, but it might have been entertaining if Eddie Kang Jr. and JT were there. There's only 3 of the five present.
- General movie negative...they never did explain what happened to Bobby, from the beginning of the movie. I was hoping for a deleted scene that would explain this, but alas...
So, would I recommend getting this? Absolutely, because I can almost guarantee it won't be released on HD-DVD or Bluray.
My favorite film of all time!!!!.......2007-02-09
An excellent film from start to finish. For most of you that don't know, this film is about the Dells, one of the greatest r&b groups of all time. Robert Townsend did a wonderful job creating this film. All of the actors were sensational, especially Leon, and Michael Wright. Great characters, and songs. this DVD malfunctions.......2007-06-08
Like another reviewer, I found that the DVD freezes after about 1.5 hours. The DVD is two-sided, with the theatrical version on one side and the extended director's cut on the other. Both sieze up and just stop playing. The scenes that are ruined are: when Jake and Elwood meet that country band in the parking lot, the steam room scene with Steve Lawrence, and the run-up to the big fund-raising concert. The disc is poor quality and very disappointing. Unfortunately I did not save my Amazon receipt...

"The Blues Brothers".....
Saturday Night Live Alum together with a Who's Who list of the greatest Rhythm and Blues artists ever assembled in one film, make for one very entertaining, funny, action packed musical. The hard part of this review is keeping myself from revealing every funny line, and all the classic scenes that came from this film(and also all the great cameo performances you'll spot throughout the story). For those too young to remember this classic comedy, or if you haven't seen it for a while let me just refresh your memory(just a little).....
Jake "Joliet" Blues(the late great John Belushi)has just been released from prison. Brother Elwood Blues(Dan Aykroyd) picks him up and they're off to fulfill a promise to visit "The Penguin". Sister Mary Stigmata(Kathleen Freeman), the head nun at the Catholic Orphanage where they grew up, informs them that the Orphanage will have to close down unless she can come up with the Five Thousand Dollars necessary to pay the property taxes. No problem for "The Blues Brothers", they'll have the money she needs by tomorrow. But NO! NO! NO!, she does not want their filthy bank robbery money, and they are not to return until they can "redeem themselves"!
While on a visit to church, where you'll find James Brown as The Reverend Cleophus James leading the congregation in song, Jake literally "sees the light!".They'll just put "The Blues Band" back together for one big night and raise the money for "The Penguin" and the Orphanage. Getting the band back together is easier said than done though.Along the way, we are treated to some musical performances by these great names..Aretha Franklin, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles and even Chaka Khan. The hysterical action also heats up as they make enemies all along the way. They are being chased by the cops, the Nazis(led by one very funny Henry Gibson), and a very angry ex-girlfriend(Carrie Fisher) who has a thing for Flame Throwers. They leave a path a destruction in their wake that is unsurpassed in chase scenes.
It's a riotous romp, directed by John Landis(Animal House/Trading Places), that will leave you wanting more..and luckily...there's a sequel! "Blues Brothers 2000", which has the terrific addition of John Goodman to the cast.
I have the Universal Widescreen(Digitally THX Mastered) VHS edition of "The Blues Brothers and it's is terrific. Not only does it have a great picture in the original widescreen image(1.85:1), but the sound is digitally mastered, and is excellent in the stereo surround. There are even a couple of bonus features on this VHS. There is the "Making Of" the sequel, talking with all the stars about coming back to do it again, and after the credits, you'll find the "making of" for the original, which clues you in on lots of little trivia details. But..I've had it for many years, and I'm looking to finally upgrade to DVD. Surfing around I see several different editions available, among them, the "collectors" edition and this 25th anniversary edition. I wish Amazon would list the features here, so we could decide if this, the most expensive, is worth the price. I see this one has 2 discs and 281 minutes, but what does it have that the 'Collectors" edition(1 disc) does not have? For me any extra time spent with John Belushi would be worth it. And why do full screen viewers have to pay more then widescreen viewers?
If you're looking for something really funny, something with a great music, a great script, and one that will be a terrific addition to your classic comedy collection, look no further, you've found it! And don't forget to look for all the great cameos along the way..(I think I restrained myself pretty well from giving too many away... don't you?) So the big question is which edition? Hopefully the features will appear soon.
Have a great time with this one and maybe you too will "see the light".......Laurie
The Blues Brothers.......2007-01-04
Purchased as a gift for a long time fan of this movie.
Danny & John's Biggest Hit.......2006-10-12
I've only really seen parts of the film, but when I saw the film as a whole, I was hysterical during the movie. The cussing surprised me, but the way Belushi and Danny used it was incredibly hilarious. The music was the big hook for me. Danny & John are so talented that they could sing and act. It brings back the memories of the original SNL days, when SNL was actually funny.
I suggest this movie for fans of the late, but great John Belushi and fans of good ole' fashioned blues.
PARTY ON, DUDES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
One night only.......2006-07-22
With Jake's release from Joliet the two brothers, Jake (John Belushi) and Elwood (Dan Aykroyd) Blues, are back together again. After visiting "The Penguin" (Kathleen Freeman), a nun at their old orphanage, they have a quest to save their old orphanage which requires the reformation of the Blues Band. We follow them on their quest, kibitzing when we can as they come across many of the musical greats from the past such as Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Cab Calloway, James Brown etc.
Toss in some Chicago neo-Nazis (Henry Gibson), Twiggy, Carry Fisher, and the entire Cook County police force in an intense chase scene.
Will the band get together?
Will the escape the revenge of Carry Fisher?
Will they be caught by the Real "Good Old Boys?"
Will they be caught by the Cook County Police force?
Will they be able to save the orphanage?
Will we have fun and lots of good music? (YES)

The Allman Brothers' strong, occasionally startling set on this DVD may soften those intransigent purists who won't accept the band without its original (and now fired) guitarist, Dickey Betts. The group's classic dual-guitar sound is capably covered by returning member Warren Haynes and rising star Derek Trucks (young nephew of Allmans' drummer Butch Trucks), who sounds as if he's lived and breathed the late Duane Allman's playbook since he left the cradle. Derek's barbed riffs feed the textured funk of "Statesboro Blues" and get some mileage out of filler like "Come and Go Blues," but the blissful-looking fellow's supreme moment comes when he joins Haynes in a blisteringly beautiful attack on gospel stunner "Soul Shine." Some of the material here borders on the pedestrian, but vocalist-keyboardist Gregg Allman's grizzled mastery of the blues can still lead this legendary band through some epic mysteries. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Still Solid After All These Years.......2007-05-29
Gregg Allman is in great voice. Butch and Jaimoe are steady and playful as ever. And at the risk of treading on sacred ground, I must say Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks recall Duane and Dickie peaking at Fillmore East, though, let's face it, nothing will ever match the freshness and fluidity of those early performances of high-octane blues. I was especially knocked out by the energy and good humor of Statesboro Blues. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to visit an old friend and appreciate the flowering of a virtuoso in Derek Trucks. The smiles exchanged by Allman and Haynes when the youngster plays say it all.
The Allmans at their best........2007-02-05
I don't care what anyone says, this lineup is every bit as good as the original. Now I know Some of you Duane fans out there will want to slam me in the face with a guitar, but I'd say after more than 30 years the grieving period is over. Plus, Hittin' The Note is one of the best albums they've ever released. Even Greg
Allman says it's their best since "Eat a Peach." There are so many songs on here, and many of them are very long. There's are good mix of hits and deep cuts. The sound quality is great and the graphics on the screen really enhance the experience. The highlights are Desdemona and Leave my Blues at Home.
Get over Dickey Betts & Allen Woody - then watch! .......2007-01-21
WOW! This one is gonna get watched quite a bit. The ABB Live at Great Woods (with Allen Woody & Dickey Betts) on VHS, aka 1990 rules. But, Live at the Beacon 2003 on DVD with all the trippy lighting & Derek Trucks playen lead with Haynes blew my mind. The audio/ video quality of this DVD is super too.
Oteil Burbridge does a good job on bass, but I still miss Allen Woody, he left us all in 2000. Also, it's gonna take awhile for me to get over NOT having Dickey with the band. Oh well, got to move on.
Old timers Gregg Allman, Jaimoe, and Butch Trucks, Warren Haynes & Marc Quinones are still with the band & play their hearts out. So anyways, if you like the ABB, GET THIS NOW. They haven't slowed down a bit. Un-fricken believable. This band is still one of the best around after more than 35 years.
Live at the BEACON THEATRE.......2006-12-30
Hell o Yeah, It seems we went there and back since the early days of the Allman Joys. Been to many shows and stories from around Boston, MA. I just purchased the Beacon Theatre 2 Disk DVD.
Nice to see teaching young pups and watch the learning their licks. Excellent Play all round. It's cool I like it very much. Hanging with the Big Dogs.
I would like to Thank Gregg Allman, Jaimoe and Butch for having such a musically tight foundation from day one and such a fine past and current group of players.
Rock On Forever and a Day.

I recommend this film for all music lovers!!!!!!!!!

Dan Aykroyd and Elwood Blues (Dan Aykroyd) take turns telling how the Blues Brothers came to be, in a restaurant interview with Tom Davis (once upon on a time teamed with Al Franken on Saturday Night Live). For those who don't know, the Blues Brother are Joliet Jake Blues (John Belushi) and Elwood Blues (Dan Aykroyd), two black-clad R & B artists who made it big with recurring appearances on Saturday Night Live in the late 1970s, and with the number-one hit "Soul Man," and of course in the hit 1980 movie, The Blues Brothers. The conceit of the restaurant interview allows Aykroyd to give some much-needed background to the origins of the act he and Belushi developed. It also serves as a lead-in to live footage, the real appeal of the video, which is an anthology of Saturday Night Live performances (including the first one where they were dressed in Killer Bees costumes), and concert footage from the 1979 U.S. tour. A must-have for Blues Brothers fans, the DVD also includes an instructional video for those who want to learn blues harmonica. --Jim Gay
Description
Writer Tom Davis hosts a Blues Brothers retrospective that tells the whole truth about the legendary band's early days and righteous ways. The Blues Brothers were an unforgettable part of Saturday Night Live's golden era, making their musical debut in bee costumes singing "I'm a King Bee," and becoming an overnight sensation. Switching to hats and shades inspired by John Lee Hooker, they combined classic Chicago Blues with Stax-Volt R&B to create a sound all their own. Their first album, Briefcase Full of Blues, went double-platinum and led quickly to their hit movie and milestone soundtrack album. The rest is history, and it's all here in a music-filled, memory-blasting account of a band that will always be on a mission from God. The Songs: I'm a King Bee; I've Got Everything I Need (Almost); Can't Turn You Loose; B-Movie Boxcar Blues; Soul Man; Messin' with the Kid; Groove Me; Flip, Flop & Fly; I Don't Know; Hey, Bartender; Jailhouse Rock; Rubber Biscuit; Shotgun Blues; Soul Man (Alternate Version). 60 minutes.

It doesn't get much better than this.....here is the final compendium on the BBs.....Chicago and Toronto, Belushi and Akroyd, Blues and Blues.......all those bits you thought you would never see again.....but here they are. Don't think, don't read further, just get it and enjoy it whenever you want.
This is a full catalog of all the classics....you can't go wrong on this one.
Good, but.............2004-03-24
I'm a huge BB fan but while the DVD was good, it could have been great. Specifically, the audio mixing was lean. The sound was missing the richness that the BB's are known for. Likewise, although I'm not one to crank the bass, the bass was too light.
Another complaint is the goofy discussions with Dan Akroyd between songs. Fairly cheesy. It would have been better to add the discussions with Dan as a Special Feature rather than between songs. Furthermore, the songs tended to abrubtly start during the second or third bar of the song. Why not at the beggining of the song?
Nonetheless, if you're a die hard BB fan you'll enjoy it.
DVD contents.......2003-01-09
I really enjoyed the footage of the Blues Brothers and can not expand on the good points raised in the other reviews. A must for all fans. But where are the Harmonica instructions that are advertised? I did not find them. The DVD is still a must own.

Long one of New Orleans's best bands, the Neville Brothers are joined by a host of topnotch guests for some frequently inspired pairings on Tell It Like It Is, an hourlong show recorded in their hometown in 1989. Art, Charles, Cyril, and Aaron Neville are all terrific musicians (especially the angel-voiced Aaron, whose rendition of the classic title tune never fails to thrill). Add to that the presence of keyboard great Herbie Hancock as musical director, plus appearances by John Hiatt, Bonnie Raitt (who duets with Aaron's son Ivan Neville, then sticks around to back up the other guests, including Gregg Allman on "Midnight Rider"), Daniel Lanois, Jimmy Buffett, Buckwheat Zydeco, and the Dixie Cups, and you've got a pretty fine party going. It's not all scintillating; actor Dennis Quaid (whose golden locks recall his performance as Jerry Lee Lewis in Great Balls of Fire, filmed that same year) is fine but hardly on a par with the others, while Ed Bradley's mercifully brief turn at the mike proves that as a singer, he makes a great newsman. Still, there's enough here to more than satisfy fans of superior contemporary New Orleans music. --Sam Graham

Very Disappointed.......2007-02-19
The only song I enjoyed was "Tell It Like It is". I did enjoy seeing Ed Bradley on stage. I still miss not seeing him on 60 Minutes.
The Neville Brothers & Friends - Tell It Like It Is.......2006-03-16
Xcellent DVD - Xcellent service from Amazon.
If you want me to love you, darlin' I will . . . .......2005-08-31
Bonnie Raitt plays slide guitar behind Greg Allman; Dennis Quaid makes women swoon; The Dixie Cups and Cyril sing Iko; and more.
Not sure about the sequencing, but this is how music should be.

Excellent DVD for learning.......2007-01-22
I was a new blues guitarist when I purchased this DVD. The examples are great, with good explanations and close ups. Keith's teaching style is also easy to follow. He is well spoken and enjoyable to listen to. There are a lot of great easy licks on this DVD that will get you learning the blues.
He Assumes way too much knowledege............2006-10-30
With a title like "Ultimate Beginner Series" he assume way too much. He is very good and I have other DVD's by Keith. I just wish they would show you the cords in a box like the other DVD's in this series. In this one you are stuck looking at his hands trying to figure out what to play
Great Work by Wyatt.......2005-08-28
I wish I had found this DVD in 1996 when it came out. I sold my electric in 1993, basically discouraged that I didn't have time for things like rock guitar, which basically requires a band. So I kept my classical guitar and occasionally take it out and learn a new piece. If you want to guage your situation with mine in considering this as a purchase, I'd say I am an intermediate amateur - know a lot of classical and just dabble in rock/folk. My goal right now is to learn some blues, jazz, and rock well enough for some for-fun light gigging and to be able to improvise a bit.
I loved this DVD. It really hit the spot for me and filled in some gaps. For me, it skipped all the basic stuff I already know and provided just the right level of detail. I love the on screen tab, the camera angles on Wyatt's left hand, and the rythm section that lets you play with the band. The DVD is easy to navigate, I just rev up the sections I want to work on and practice right along. I'd say this DVD was worth about 10 guitar lessons, easily (at least the bozo I was working with would try to chat the whole time, show me one tiny song or riff that I could have looked up on the web, and refuse to record or write anything down). With a well-mdae DVD There's no problem remembering what was taught, or problems figuring out what's going on. When the camera angle isn't clear enough, the book with the tablature is right there.
I don't know what else to say. I bought a new electric and I'm just having a blast again with guitar, the blues, et cetera, and I really enjoyed the DVD. I wish Kieth would publish a sequel "steps 3 and 4"! Thanks Kieth, you made my musical life a little brighter and at a great price!
Best of the basic blues DVDs I've found so far........2005-07-30
Lots of material for both rhythm and lead presented very well. Good camera angles, pretty good sound, and an impressive amount of material is covered. Definitely worth the dough!
Lose the mullet Keith!
The guy knows his stuff........2003-05-29
I found Kieth Wyatt's DVD informative as well as entertaining. The manner with which he instructs is specific and to the point. As a musician as well as a teacher, he is very relaxed, almost encouraging. He breaks down every facet of playing blues into precise instructions. He explains what he's about to do then he does it.
I think that the added feature of having the band tracks available is ideal in that you can apply what you've learned by playing along with it. I'd recommend this to anyone who'd want to start playing, or if they play already, play better.
The only question that comes to mind is, "Why havn't I done this sooner?"
