French humor, which isn't exactly subtle, is delivered via an especially broad premise in The Closet. A nebbish (Daniel Auteuil) who works at a condom manufacturer learns he's about to be fired; with the help of his neighbor, he pretends to be gay so his boss can't fire him without seeming prejudiced. Then a bigoted coworker (Gerard Depardieu) tries to worm his way into the nebbish's good graces because he's afraid of being fired. In the wrong hands, The Closet could be ham-fisted slapstick. What makes this movie truly delightful is the superb understatement with which every gag is handled; even the sight of Auteuil wearing a giant condom tip on his head has an impeccable deadpan grace. All the performances are excellent; Depardieu's smarm is particularly delicious. Each scene takes a new twist of social discomfort and befuddlement in this winning comedy. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars PURE GENIUS.......2007-05-17

R Kelly stumbled upon pure genius when recording this. This is a never-ending suspenseful thriller from start to finish. Read these quotes as if R Kelly was singing and you will understand. "What's that smell.....I think someone just broke wind" "Oh my god it was a midget..midget..midget". Best short film ever made!

4 out of 5 stars A guilty pleasure.......2007-04-11

Once you watch these, you will be hooked. Whether it's to bash it, laugh along with it or at it, or to even..*gasp* love it, it really has something for everyone.

R. Kelly has brilliantly come up with a story that is just so non-sensical and ridiculous that you can't help but to be caught up in it. What starts as a simple one night cheating session turns into one of the most complicated and twisted stories ever. It seems that the main character played by R. Kelly isn't the only one sleeping around. As each song comes to a close we find out there is yet another twist to look forward to in the next chapter of the song. And more and more people get involved into the never ending tale.

I'll admit it, flat out. I'm not a fan of R&B music or R. Kelly. But something drew me to this "urban opera" as Kelly proudly calls this that now makes me a fan of R. Kelly. This is something that I think someone from any background or origin can get into. It is almost like watching the WWE or a soap opera in the morning just with a musical theme to it. And the music is actually fun. While the song comes off more like speaking to a tune with a rhyme to it, it has a great beat and sound to it that keeps everything flowing well together in each chapter. And you can't take it seriously. Of course the events that go on in each chapter are silly and far fetched. He touches on a little bit of everything. Cheating, gay couples, dwarfs, convicts, nosey neighbors, his great impression of a white southern house wife and even the crooked cop shows up. You name it and it shows up in these videos. There are some part that are laugh out loud funny while other parts that just make you wonder where he came up with some of this as it is so forced and strange to suddenly be showing up. But they don't try to be a serious take on urban life, it is more of a mocumentary of just weird occurances. Anyone taking this too seriously shouldn't be watching this as that is not at all what this is trying to portray. If anything it seems like its just having fun through music and corny situations and it's a very unique and fun experience for the most part.

If it weren't for the silliness and just drawn out situations that this gets into as we get deeper into the story this would easily be a five star recomendation. But that's not to say that this is not worth checking out and owning. I think anyone who likes some good music, some fun situations and something you will definitely watch more then once, you can't go wrong here. There is a reason why this has been spoofed and referenced in so many places. Its just that original and fresh and unique an idea that R. Kelly came up with here, that it is hard not to get addicted to these videos and the music as well. I won't say this deserves an award or anything for great music and acting but I will say I was very pleasently surprised when I saw it for myself. R. Kelly in his own way has come up with something here and I say don't judge it till you see it. Whether you cringe, laugh or get into the music, you will find something to enjoy with his Urban Opera. I know I sure did.

5 out of 5 stars Can't Look Away.......2007-03-30

Watching "Trapped in the Closet" is exactly like watching a car accident. Specifically, a short bus has run a travelling carnival off the road, and now there's a riot. But they're not really fighting, they are dance-fighting like "West Side Story." And then the cops show up, and they let loose with a bunch of tear gas, but the tear gas is just stink bombs.

I'm obsessed with this movie for all the wrong reasons.

5 out of 5 stars Funny.......2007-01-26

Get stoned and watch this movie, i have never laughed so hard in my life!

4 out of 5 stars You should watch this movie, now you're buying this movie, now you're watching this movie.......2007-01-21

After hearing the first five "chapters" in this musical soap opera, I thought I was prepared for the music videos that followed the "saga" up to its twelfth chapter. No. Nothing can prepare you for what R. Kelly has created in the first twelve chapters of Trapped in the Closet.

Whether you take these stories seriously (as R. Kelly does), or as a monumental joke (as I do), they're definitely original and unforgettable. Masterfully mixing soap opera, musical comedy, R & B, farce, and even a little old school musical into one big pot of lip-synced sweetness, Trapped in the Closet will have you engrossed in the story, and laughing at every plot twist. I mean, there's a midget with asthma hiding in the pantry at one point.

The "behind the scenes" featurette offers insight into R. Kelly's creation. Behind the scenes he just keeps repeating how this is his masterpiece and it's going to change what people thing is "possible and impossible". In R. Kelly's mind, the future holds 20 more chapters and a Trapped in the Closet talk show. It's interesting to watch his child-like fascination with his own creation, but don't get caught up in his fanatacism, because Trapped in the Closet is a farcical masterpiece at best, not the work of genius he might make it out to be.

3 out of 5 stars Not so funny.......2007-06-12

Yes, the acting is good, and the filming is more than adequate. But the truth is that this film is not very funny. The problem is the script. It is bland and sometimes confusing. There really is no point to it. (Is it for or against homosexuality?) The "R" rating is strictly for a few seconds of fake sex filmed at a distance. And there is no point to that either. This movie is simply not up to Veber's zany La Cage Aux Folles or his mildly humorous The Dinner Game.

5 out of 5 stars Daniel Auteuil is fabulous.......2006-08-11

I've been a fan of Daniel Auteuil for some time and look forward to each new movie. This one is very funny and entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars A very funny film!.......2005-08-07

This is an original film, plenty of laughs and smart situations. Possibly the finest comedy in years.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty funny French film about stereotypes and sexuality.......2005-06-18

The premise of this movie is that a competent but quiet and unexciting accountant (Pignon) is getting fired for no particular reason except someone has to go and he's considered expendable, being something of a zero in the eyes of his employer and coworkers. The opening scene says it all when he willingly is omitted from the annual company photo of the staff: he will not be missed by anyone. Pignon is very depressed and considering ending it all when his new neighbor on the adjoining balcony intervenes. The neighbor has an idea to help him: he should pretend he's gay and then his employer will be too concerned about "correctness" to fire him -- they'll bend over backwards to pretend they're not prejudiced. The neighbor (a retired industrial psychologist) doctors up some photos with the head of the accountant (Pignon) and the bodies of some gays entering a gay night club. These are sent anonymously to Pignon's boss, and quickly are photocopied and spread throughout the company. The president quickly decides it would be a very bad strategy to fire Pignon, because these days, they wouldn't want to alienate the gay market, particularly since they make condoms.

It sounds like a thin one-joke movie, but the actors are good enough that it's quite amusing and doesn't drag. Gerard Depardieu (a very funny guy) plays Santini, the captain of the company rugby team who is aggressively heterosexual and makes disparaging remarks about gays constantly. He's warned that he better buddy up to Pignon (by coworkers who are basically playing a joke on him) or else he'll get fired. Subplots involve Pignon's relationship with his ex-wife and estranged son. There is a very funny scene of Pignon in a gay pride parade.

The whole film is made less obnoxious by an episode involving gay-bashing (violent) that makes it clear that the subject is really rather serious, even if the film is funny.

4 out of 5 stars reinvention.......2005-03-15

The Closet was hilarious. Daniel Auteuil plays a boring, dull, and mostly overlooked man who is ignored by his family (ex wife and son), ignored or seen as useless at work, and basically has no personality or terribly redeeming qualities that can be seen. It is no wonder, then, when he discovers that he is going to be among those fired at his workplace, that he accepts this unquestioningly. Happily, his neighbor has a great talent for invention and sends a photo to Auteuil's character Pignon's office revealing him to be gay and something of a "wild man" outside of work. Naturally Pignon won't be fired now that his employer thinks he is gay; this will be seen as ostracizing and divisive and prejudiced, singling him out for his sexual orientation. The events that take place after Pignon's "outing" are farcical, comical and hilarious. Auteuil is a versatile actor, easily at home in comedy or drama, as is his co-star, Gerard Depardieu. Both handle their roles well. In the course of Pignon's "coming out" Pignon actually discovers a great deal about himself and his life changes unalterably.

Author Armistead Maupin (Tales of the City) wrote Lily Tomlin's narration for this superb documentary, based on a book by the late Vito Russo, about Hollywood's treatment of homosexual characters in the 20th century. Never pointing a finger at anyone in the film community, The Celluloid Closet presents clips from more than 100 mainstream features (including The Children's Hour, Advise and Consent, The Boys in the Band, and The Hunger) that speak loudly in their respective images of gays and lesbians. The film makes a persuasive case for patterns of sexual mythology in Hollywood, such as presenting homosexuals repeatedly as tragic, helpless figures redeemed only through death or as back-street monsters cavorting in the shadows. Things change, of course, and clips from more recent films by gay and lesbian filmmakers suggest a more vital, diverse, autobiographical approach. There are lots of great interviews with screenwriters (Gore Vidal), filmmakers (John Schlesinger), actors (Tom Hanks, Whoopi Goldberg), and others to enunciate the major themes. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars A Must-See if You're Human.......2007-05-04

Where do I start? THE CELLULOID CLOSET is wonderful...it details the history of the portrayal of homosexuality in Hollywood. As a bisexual, it reached me on an almost cellular level because it was outlining something that I already knew. It's something that everyone should see in order to understand the true pervasiveness of heterosexism in our society. It also shows where a few of those roots may have come from - mainly censorship.

In the thirties, the Catholic Church in cooperation with the U.S. government instituted the Hays code, which put strict censorship limits on Hollywood films. This contributed to homosexuality being a taboo subject, and created a world in which generations were to grow up - one where homosexuality was coded, ignored, marginalized, and portrayed negatively if there at all. Society was stunted.

This pain is an inextricable part of the film, but it also manages to be entertaining and eye-opening for straight audiences. I'd recommend it for people who don't quite understand how pervasive homophobia and heterosexism are in our society. If you don't get it by watching this film, I'm not sure that I can help you.

5 out of 5 stars Hollywood's Homophobia Exposed.......2007-03-19

In his groundbreaking book, The Celluloid Closet, gay activist Vito Russo argued that Hollywood's past harbored an abysmal record of portraying gay people on screen. Images of GLBT people in countless films of the classic era have subtly or not-so-subtly managed to malign, condemn, or misrepresent gay people in a manner that, in retrospect, is utterly mind-boggling. Using interviews and especially film clips, Mr. Russo's basic argument is well supported in this excellent 1996 film adaptation of his book.

The documentary includes in-depth interviews with screenwriters Jay Presson Allen, Arthur Laurents, Gore Vidal, Paul Rudnick, Barry Sandler, Mart Crowley, and writer / actor Harvey Fierstein, as well as actors Tony Curtis, Shirley MacLaine, Antonio Fargas, Susan Sarandon, Tom Hanks, Whoopie Goldberg, Harry Hamlin, writer Quentin Crisp, director John Schlesinger and others.

The film begins by demonstrating the early prominence of the Hollywood "sissy". Shirley MacLaine observes that, "The sissy made everyone feel more manly, or more womanly, by occupying the space in between". But the relatively innocuous sissy soon gave way to Hollywood's penchant for presenting GLBT culture as a shadowy world of villains, subversives, and the mentally ill. The best we could hope for was that some sympathetic director might tone down the images of gays as sick and evil, a rendering that was more or less dictated by the censorship codes that were in force for much of the first hundred years of Hollywood history. By the late 1940's, Hollywood's version of gay people was as unrealistic and damaging as any propaganda ever wielded against any minority, anywhere, and the film proves that Hollywood maligned, marginalized and demonized an already disenfranchised minority. As Lily Tomlin says early on in the narration, "Hollywood, that great maker of myth, taught straight people what to think about gay people, and gay people what to think about themselves".

The powers that be were not content merely to ridicule us with the Franklin Pangborns and the Edward Everett Hortons of the art deco era. In the late 1940s and 1950s, Hollywood "grew up" and allowed "more realistic" depictions of gays and lesbians - which meant that for the next twenty-five years or so, we were portrayed as deviates, murderers, child molesters, or - if we were lucky - just plain seedy characters living on the fringe, almost always menacing, and never to be trusted. This period was followed by the "breakthrough" films of the late sixties - including such controversial attention-getters as The Killing of Sister George and The Boys in The Band. Meanwhile, lesser-remembered but influential films like Walk on The Wild Side, Advise and Consent, and The Detective continued to present us as pathetic and self-hating, occasionally benign but almost always sick. The most sympathetic storylines could be expected to paint us as hopelessly unhappy and maladjusted "problems of society," instead of simply showing us as what we are - people. One of the more brilliant sequences in the film employs a lengthy string of film excerpts to show how the word "faggot" has been casually bantered about the silver screen, in a manner that would have brought outrage had Hollywood dared utilize such a pejorative term in such a pervasive manner for any other minority. During this same period, Great Britain had a slightly better track record, with such genuinely sympathetic films as Victim and The Trials of Oscar Wilde.

The first light at the end of this bleak tunnel began in the 1970s with the emergence of more daring independent productions. In the past thirty-five years, hundreds of "Indy" GLBT films have catered to an ever-growing audience of gay people, who refuse to accept the malignant depictions that mainstream films have shoved down our throats for the better part of a century. Instead, GLBT viewers flocked to see more accurate representations of themselves than ever before, in films such as A Very Natural Thing, Making Love, Beautiful Thing, It's My Party, Jeffrey, It's In The Water, Parting Glances, Bargirls, The Watermelon Woman, Claire of the Moon, The Laramie Project, and Ma Vie en Rose.

For a while, Hollywood responded to our newfound and respectable popularity by producing a few movies that tried not to offend GLBT people and, at the same time, hold on to a straight or mixed audience. Frequently, it was the results that were mixed, not the audience. GLBT audiences went hoping to finally see accurate depictions of themselves, and straight audiences stayed away in droves. The big budget "gay" Hollywood films sometimes worked fine (Wilde, Philadelphia, Gods and Monsters, Personal Best, and, well, The Celluloid Closet all spring to mind), but, as often as not, Hollywood's attempts to woo a gay audience while holding the interest of heterosexuals just didn't work at all. The Birdcage, Stonewall, Kiss Me Guido, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, In and Out and Flawless were all either too bland, too banal, too full of stereotypes, or too patronizing. Many were as insulting as the "sissies" of days gone by. For a while, it didn't seem possible to make a gay film that could manage to entertain straight audiences yet not insult its gay audience at the same time. Many of us began to demand more. The formula for GLBT entertainment had to be able to appeal to everybody, or what good was it? And how can the GLBT community ever reap the benefits of accurate portrayals of our lives on film, if we are the only people who see them?

As if in answer to these questions, since the release of The Celluloid Closet, an even more radical trend has emerged, that is, the inclusion of positive gay images in otherwise mainstream heterosexual movies. It started subtly; such films as Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Color Purple, Personal Best and As Good As It Gets finally arrived at a place we needed to be all along, presenting realistic, positive images of gay people, carefully integrated into the plots of otherwise heterosexual movies. This has been supplemented by gay movies that, thanks to their critical acclaim, have reached a wider mainstream audience (The Wedding Banquet, Swoon, The Living End). Now that the floodgates are open, I believe that this trend will be unstoppable. We have already had an Academy Award winner for Best Picture (American Beauty) that managed to present realistic gay people while condemning homophobia, and all within the context of a predominantly heterosexual plot. And the Academy's snub of Brokeback Mountain didn't keep a largely heterosexual audience from seeing it, loving it and, most importantly, learning from it.

This past year has seen even more gay characters inserted into otherwise heterosexual plotlines; Capote, Quinceñera, Shortbus, Infamous, Running With Scissors and The Night Listener all had gay characters who were central to the plot. Hopefully this trend will continue, and as GBLT people integrate themselves more fully into society, so too will their images be seamlessly added to American cinema.

4 out of 5 stars An interesting and informative on the history of the portrayal of gays in the movies.......2006-09-16

I had been intending to see this documentary pretty much from the time it first came out until recently when I finally did see it. I was both pleased and surprised that it completely restricted itself to an analysis of the images that appeared onscreen and disappointed that in the end not much was really said of any depth. So, I was in the odd state of being relieved that it was not a bad film like it had the chance to be (by delving into speculations about the sex lives of famous Hollywood personalities) but that it wasn't quite as good as I hope it would be.

I had wondered beforehand if the film would cover such topics as the frequent speculation about Cary Grant and Randolph Scott (for which there is amazingly little evidence; the basis for their having been lovers seems to rest almost exclusively on their having roomed together for many years); the rivalries between the Cole Porter set in Hollywood and the Noel Coward set; efforts to hide the bi-, homo-, or pansexuality of actors such as Errol Flynn, Robert Taylor, Laurence Olivier, Danny Kaye, Tyrone Power (all of whom were in fact one of the three); or the proclivities of various actresses. In fact, there was astonishingly little comment on the sexual orientations of the various people in Hollywood. Instead, the entire film deals almost exclusively with images on the screen and only on the screen. This, however, turns out to be far more interesting than a voyeuristic plumbing of the sex lives of the stars. Being a movie buff I had, of course, seen a number of obviously gay characters in the movies. Joel Cairo in THE MALTESE FALCON is merely one of the better known. The documentary is at its finest when it unearths many gay and lesbian images from films of the twenties, thirties, forties, and fifties, decades in which self-censorship limited what could be shown in the movies. Some of these images will be familiar to anyone who has seen many films, such as Mrs. Danvers in REBECCA (those it should be pointed out that even as it is the movie tremendously mutes the lesbianism that is far more blatant in the novel). Many others will be far less familiar. The number of scenes with unmistakable homosexual scenes will, I believe, surprise most people who have seen a lot of movies. The most interesting moment may have been when Gore Vidal admits that he and William Wyler decided that Ben-Hur and Messala had been lovers. Stephen Boyd was informed of this and he acted his half of the relationship with this in mind, while Wyler and Vidal decided not to tell the rather conservative Heston of any of this.

In the end, limiting the discussion of homosexuality to the images on the screen somewhat limited the scope of the documentary. I'm not quite sure what ultimate point they were trying to make, unless it is the somewhat trivial one that gays have been treated negatively in the movies, though that has improved somewhat in recent years. Not knowing what their ultimate goal in the film was, I can't say whether they achieved it.

Still, despite an ambiguity at the heart of the film about what they were trying to accomplish, this remains a very interesting film. It is narrated by Lily Tomlin. At the time of its first presentation on HBO the story was widely circulated that she had informally agreed to come out of the closet at the time the film was first shown. At the last minute she seems to have a change of heart. She remains to this day the most poorly closeted person in the United States. To me this points to a perhaps even more interesting story: the way that actors and actresses and directors have stayed closeted over the decades. For every Rupert Everett and Ian McKellan there have been forty actors to stay closeted. That ongoing struggle between maintaining a public image while living a very different life privately is one I find fascinating.

All in all, this is a very good documentary. I definitely recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Above average movie.......2006-08-14

This movie is about how homosexuals has been portrayed in movies over time. In the early years they were made fun of. Mostly men being sissies. But that didn't seem as bad as when the '50s and early '60s when they were shown as pathetic creatures who lived a miserable existence and deserved to die. How hard it must have been if you were gay or lesbian growing up in those times! Then the '70s and early '80s they were mostly villains. Finally we are starting to make realistic films of gay life. And I for one sees that as a good thing.

It's a good movie for historical information and for open minded people.

5 out of 5 stars a valuable documentary.......2006-07-09

To me, this film is worth owning, not just renting to see once. One only wishes it could be updated continually, especially to include 2005's Brokeback Mountain. However, it has so many gems that I recommend it for gathering so much history together.

1 out of 5 stars This has to be a joke........2005-11-07

This stuff just has to be some silly joke. I don't even know how anybody can possibly even think there's any creativity or entertainment in this. In interviews, R.Kelly is patting himself on the back saying that he thinks this is genius, but it is really just a disgrace to him and urban music. Period.

The first chapter is tolerable, but then it just gets bogus. Really stupid. Everybody is cheating on everybody and you can predict everything that happens. There is no difference between all of the songs. All of the same, played out melody that wasn't good to begin with.

And the acting. Good Lord. The acting is just laughable. If I were ever to like this DVD, it would be because it makes me laugh. The actors are just atrocious.

I can't even convince you enough how cheesy this 'urban opera' is, but I'll try. R.Kelly ends up shooting his wife's brother in the arm accidentally. Someone knocks on the door and who could it be? Rosie, the nosy neighbor of course, silly. About two minutes later they're laughing and joking. And then the cop returns to his cheating wife with an awful Southern accent (courtesy od R.Kelly's narraration.) "She continues to talk about pears" is an actual lyric when she's trying to stall him from finding the person she was cheating with. And I could fill up this whole page.

In conclusion, this has to be the wasckest thing that R.Kelly has ever been affiliated with and it's a disgrace to the urban music industry. He might as well be in jail, becasue his career is going absolutely nowhere with this chessy stuff.

But no need to worry, Chapters 13-16 are already written.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THE REAL, UNCENSORED VERSION.......2005-11-01

Released on the eve of R. Kelly's court date, where he faced some serious charges and a very incriminating videotape, the first five chapters of the Closet Cycle confused, amazed, and delighted his fans. The entirety of the series, including all 12 chapters, is sure to have the same effect. Essentially an R&B soap opera, complete with the sets, lighting, convoluted plotlines, and scandalous secrets of daytime TV, TRAPPED IN THE CLOSET features its star and a cast of characters very literally acting out the actions the song describes. The plot involves numerous infidelities, a homosexual affair, a gun, and--as this is an R. Kelly piece of work--at least one steamy sex scene. The attention to detail is astounding, hilarious, and typical of Kelly, as he describes everything from the fear he experiences while hiding from his lover's husband, to the leg cramp he gets while having sex with his wife. Kelly's smooth vocals give voice to everything, even as the different characters mouth the lyrics. Though the project recalls the cheating themes of old blues songs, evokes the look of daytime drama, and contains the controlled raunchiness of vintage Kelly, it's safe to say that TRAPPED IN THE CLOSET represents a new direction in R&B, and is like nothing else audiences have ever seen before.

This is a great DVD, but the uncensored DVD is better. Dont waste your money on censored garbage.

    Description

Claude Akins John Carradine Jesse White and Stella Stevens headline this humorous and skillful parody of 50's horror films. The monster (Kevin Peter Hall) hides out in closets and waits for victims to unsuspectingly grab a shirt or slacks before he reduces them to dead meat. After several closet deaths, a writer (Donald Grant) sent to cover the story soon teams up with a science teacher (Denise DuBarry) and her son, a super-smart child prodigy, and they set out to solve the murders. The plot thickens when the gruff, brash Gen. Turnbull (Donald Moffat) enters the picture. It seems the monster is bullet-proof, laser-proof and bomb-proof -- a challenge to capture, kill, or subdue. This 80's horror hit classic offers fun for all as America joins together to battle the monster in the closet. This DVD comes fully loaded with the premiere episode of the Toxic Crusaders TV show, production stills, an episode of Troma's Edge TV and the first ever tour of Troma studios.

    4 out of 5 stars so awesome........2007-03-11

as far as b-movies go, this one is an instant classic. The monster alone is too funny. If you are a collector or enjoy cheesy horror/sci fi nonsense you should pick this one up. Not incredibly violent, but very ridiculous.

5 out of 5 stars Monster In The Closet.......2006-02-26

This is a hilarious low-tech movie that most people can enjoy. It is not overdone with loud unrealistic Special Effects that destroy the pleasure of current horror flicks. The movie is done in a straight-up CAMPY style, even the faint of heart will be won over. When I reflect on some of the scenes I still burst out with laughter!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful Campy Horror Movie.......2004-10-18

Let me first start off by saying this...do not see this movie if you are expecting a serious, epic horror film. It's not that at all. But for fans of campy movies such as those old monster movies, then you will love this! Also, Stacy Ferguson (Fergie, from Black Eyed Peas) has a short little part in the movie, she's in like the first scene. It's kind of weird seeing her so young, since I never watched Kids Incorporated. But, all in all, a good movie for campy horror film fans!

5 out of 5 stars Quick! Grab The Xylophone And The Kazoo!.......2004-07-12

This rare film, made with lots of personal sacrifice from the cast and crew, is well worth the effort to seek out. "Monster In The Closet" is a satire of formulaic monster movies, and is done with great wit and charm on a low budget. The story concerns a mysterious set of serial murders in which all victims are killed in their closets. Early victims include the horror movie institution, John Carradine, this time as a cranky blind man who gets eaten.

A spittoon-toting Sheriff (Claude Akins) tries to defeat the monster while ignoring scientific counsel from scientists Denise Dubarry and Henry Gibson. Gibson is particularly entertaining as a half-baked forgetful professor who thinks he can communicate with the creature via a xylophone (he can, as it turns out, not that it does him any good), and is forever prattling on about a frog he once found. The male lead is Donald Grant, who does a great job as the naive 'Pretty Boy' reporter sent to cover the story as harassment by veteran reporter "Scoop" played by Frank Ashmore. I have never been as pleased in a movie as when Grant stands up to Ashmore.

When the creature finally does show up it is a gross looking kind of excrement monster with a second sub-head in a spoof of "Alien", which actually can be communicated with. In the end not only does Gibson get to chat with the creature via the xylophone, but Grant gets to chat via kazoo, as well. The Army seems powerless to do anything, a romance subplot flourishes, and we get to what would seem to be the climactic scene of the film. There is a great twist in the last 15 minutes, which I did not see coming, and probably most other people won't either. Suffice it to say, it is silly, involves a lot of property mutilation that I would not want to explain to my Homeowner's policy issuer, love, self-sacrifice (sort of), and hope springing eternal. (And ultimately a lot of expensive remodeling.)

The film is a great, cheesy, fun movie to watch (best with friends) and I highly recommend it. Troma distributes it, but did not produce it, so it is not typical Troma fare. It is not particularly violent (except the scenes of violent closet disruption and some Army efforts at the grade school) or gory (well, OK, the monster mouth is pretty nasty), has little objectionable except one fairly gratuitous scene of Stella Stevens in an excellent "Psycho" parody, and is just plain fun.

Watch a great low budget movie and see why B Movies can be so much fun. Grab "Monster In The Closet" today!

5 out of 5 stars MONSTERS IN THE CLOSET stars Fergie of Black Eyed Peas.......2004-05-20

Stacy Ferguson, also none a Fergie of the Black Eyed Peas, Kids incorporated star from 1983-1989, and former member of Wild Orchid, has a short role in this movie. Shes the lil blonde girl. Shes so cute in it lol. Its a must have for any fans of fergie. She was like 11 in it lol.

Its a great movie and people should by it anyway. even if you rnot a fergie fan.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2004-03-05

Skeletons In The Closet was a really cool movie! I recently added this DVD to my own collection, and I'm glad I did! It may not have been the greatest phsychological thriller in the world, but it was definately worth watching. I was very impressed with Jonathan Jackson's performace as Will Reid's (Treat Williams) 18-year old son with some deep, emotional problems. Williams was great as Jackson's paranoid father who undoubtedly has some issues of his own. Linda Hamilton was O.K. with the part she was given, even though her role could have been completely omitted from the script and not have changed the movie one bit. This movie is definately worth watching!

5 out of 5 stars OUT OF THE CLOSET.......2004-01-11

A man fears his son is a serial killer; the son plays on this and torments his father; is he the culprit or is it the father? That is the premise in this low-key, yet tense and enthralling psychological drama. The answer is rather predictable, but thanks to the intense performances by Treat Williams, Linda Hamilton and Jonathan Jackson, the movie grabs you and doesn't let up until it's last mesmerizing scene. Williams has aged nicely, maintaining that handsome leading man quality, but has gone a little pudgy and hangs on to that guy next door persona. Hamilton, looking a little tired and older, nonetheless conveys a quiet sexuality and seems to enjoy her character; Jackson switches from smart-mouthed brat to the abused victim rather effectively. The direction is terse and not ostentatious, Powers letting the story tell itself.
    A tight little overlooked film.

    3 out of 5 stars Vapid Entertainment.......2002-08-24

Skeletons in the Closet is a head-game style flick asking: Who's the Bad Guy? The father of a disturbed teenager starts to believe that his son is a serial killer. The son, for his part, seems to enjoy messing with his father's head. Linda Hamilton plays the father's girlfriend, who is caught in the middle between father and son, with both telling her that the other is paranoid.

Overall, this movie was a bit over reaching and predictable. There were no surprises and the script fails to deliver on the potential drama of the story. The acting in this movie is quite good and does help to deliver it from made for TV status. In fact, I have to wonder what Linda Hamilton was doing in this movie at all. Either her career is on the way down or her agent needs to suggest that she be more picky with her roles. Truly, her character could have been fully eliminated from the script without really losing anything.

I say go ahead and watch. It's not too bad, if you don't expect too much. It will at least help you to burn a couple of hours with some mindless entertainment. We all need that sometimes.

For DVD collectors: This DVD has basically nothing of interest. There are no extras beyond production notes, cast&crew, and the trailer. Kinda disappointing on that front.

4 out of 5 stars Well worth it.......2002-07-16

A while ago my wife brought home this movie on VHS from the local movie joint. I rolled my eyes figuring she picked up another B-grade cheesy flick. Boy was I surprised. This movie is well acted and keeps your attention throughout. In has enough twists to keep you wondering who is doing what and what the full story really is. It doesn't rely on gore or shock value but rather mental games to keep you glued and wondering what is going to happen. Well worth the money and a great addition to any dramatic/thriller DVD collection.

    5 out of 5 stars GREAT MOVIE!.......2002-06-23

My Opinion May Seem A Little Biased because i was in the movie! it was filmed in Jackson New Hampshire, where i live so i got to be an extra in a couple of scenes. ANYWAY, this is a great movie and it keeps you on the edge of your seats. i HIGHLY recomend u buy this

    5 out of 5 stars Cameron's Closet - a great and wonderful movie!.......2006-09-25

Cameron's Closet was a very interesting movie from start to finish. It is just a nice movie about nice people, and one mean, scary monster. Everyone should see this movie. It's my favorite movie. It is simply rivoting!

    2 out of 5 stars BORING, TACKY.......2002-06-08

Watching this movie is about as much fun as having your wisdom teeth pulled. Boring and tacky even by horror standards, the only fun comes from seeing the psychic kids' future wicked stepfather being eaten by the monster that lives in his closet, hence the title. I've seen far worse, but those worse movies were more "enjoyable" than this. The following morning you probably won't remember having seen it. If only the monster had eaten this movie's negative, then we would all be spared.

    1 out of 5 stars Horrid.......2001-08-21

I once saw this movie seven years ago and really liked it. Hey, I was young and naive. I recently rented this movie to see it again. I was once again robbed of my money. Cameron's Closet is 90 minutes of pure boredom. The acting is horrible, the monster is laughable, the writing is unbelieveable, I could just go on and on about how terrible this movie is. Cameron is a young boy who has telekinetic powers. He then brings a demon to life through a statue his dad gave him. Then people begin to die. A detective and a psychiatrist begin to investigate. I can't begin to comprend why I liked this movie the first time I saw it. This is just one big laughfest from the start to the end.

    5 out of 5 stars Creepy chiller.......2001-02-16

Young Cameron possesses some crafty telekinetic powers and inadvertantly unleashes a nasty Mayan demon...A great horror film done in a sitcomish/tvmovieoftheweekish style with a healthy heaping of late 80s style will be sure to please horror fans, and Scott Curtis enthusiasts. Never really scary, but somewhat eerie. Good sound sequences. Interesing images. Cameron is cinematic copecetic.

    5 out of 5 stars a 11 year old reviewer.......2000-11-17

This movie scared the hell outta me! When the monster roared that was a little spooky. When i saw it chaseing the guy in the end that monster ran so freakin fast it scared me soo hard cuz it was getting closer to him. the gory parts where neat. but the monster made me get a little scared after watching this! kid ages7+8+10+11 will maybe get frighten by this film. so this movie will be good for kids that want a good scare and some gore. but grown-ups might think its chessy as hell. if your still young get this! or if your older DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY! buy it for the kiddes.

5 out of 5 stars Classiques de la comédie.......2007-03-16

Ces deux films sont des classiques de la comédie française. Le Dîner de Cons et le Placard sont les meilleurs films de Véber depuis Pierre Richard et Gérard Depardieu. Jacques Villeret est excellent en François Pignon et Auteil lui succède bien.
