Garry Marshall (Pretty Woman) directs the screen adaptation of Terence McNally's play Frankie and Johnny at the Clair de Lune, the story of a short-order cook (Al Pacino) who drives a waitress (Michelle Pfeiffer) crazy with his adamant courtship and mixed messages. The film is okay and not much more than that, the major stumbling block being Marshall's failure to scrub away enough star veneer on Pacino and Pfeiffer to accept them as minimum-wage drones with nowhere to go but toward each other. Fortunately, Marshall's feel for the texture offered by supporting players--Hector Elizondo as a café owner, Nathan Lane as Pfeiffer's inevitably gay neighbor-buddy, Kate Nelligan as another lonely waitress--keeps things interesting enough. --Tom Keogh

Riding the strange '50s nostalgia wave that swept through America during the late 1970s (caused by TV shows like Happy Days and films like American Graffiti), Grease became not only the word in 1978, but also a box-office smash and a cultural phenomenon. Twenty years later, this entertaining film adaptation of the Broadway musical received another successful theatrical release, which included visual remastering and a shiny new Dolby soundtrack. In this 2002 DVD release, Grease lovers can also now see it in the correct 2:35 to 1 Panavision aspect ratio, and see retrospective interviews with cast members and director Randal Kleiser. All these stylistic touches are essential to the film's success. Without the vibrant colors, unforgettably campy and catchy tunes (like "Greased Lightning," "Summer Nights," and "You're the One That I Want"), and fabulously choreographed, widescreen musical numbers, the film would have to rely on a silly, cliché-filled plot that we've seen hundreds of times. As it is, the episodic story about the romantic dilemmas experienced by a group of graduating high school seniors remains fresh, fun, and incredibly imaginative.

The young, animated cast also deserves a lot of credit, bringing chemistry and energy to otherwise bland material. John Travolta, straight from his success in Saturday Night Fever, knows his sexual star power and struts, swaggers, sings, and dances appropriately, while Olivia Newton-John's portrayal of virgin innocence is the only decent acting she's ever done. And then there's Stockard Channing, spouting sexual double-entendres as Rizzo, the bitchy, raunchy leader of the Pink Ladies, who steals the film from both of its stars. Ignore the sequel at all costs. --Dave McCoy

Description

John Travolta solidified his position as the most versatile and magnetic screen presence of the decade in this film version of the smash hit play Grease. Recording star Olivia Newton-John made her American film debut as Sandy, Travolta's naive love interest. The impressive supporting cast reads like a "who's who" in this quintessential musical about the fabulous '50s. Grease is not just a nostalgic look at a simpler decade--it's an energetic and exciting musical homage to the age of rock 'n' roll!

With volatile issues of Baltimore city political reform as its narrative focus, the third season of The Wire superbly maintains the series' astonishingly consistent status as the greatest "novel for television" ever created. While the Baltimore police department's wire-tapping investigations continue to monitor the intricate and now legitimately fronted drug ring of Russell "Stringer" Bell (Idris Elba, smooth as ever), detective Jimmy McNulty (Dominic West) continues his loutish ways, navigating through a series of shallow sexual conquests while doing some of the best cop-work of his career. Stringer's ex-convict partner Avon Barksdale (Wood Harris) is back in the picture and bent on eliminating a drug-dealing competitor named Marlo (Jamie Hector), and Baltimore P.D. Major Howard "Bunny" Colvin (Robert Wisdom) tries his own defiantly independent brand of street justice by essentially legalizing drugs in "Hamsterdam," where isolated sections of the city are established as open drug-dealing zones, utterly without the knowledge or approval of Colvin's superiors. As city councilman Tommy Carcetti (Aiden Gillen) plots his own ruthlessly ambitious strategy for the mayor's seat, Baltimore officials, McNulty's wire unit, and the entire Baltimore P.D. stand poised for the inevitable fallout from street-level and executive-level manipulations of power.

Of course, this is just the tip of a very large iceberg, as The Wire continues its labyrinthine yet tightly controlled chronicle of over 50 characters, major and minor, who are all flawlessly woven into the fabric of these 12 remarkable episodes. For season 3, series creator David Simon continued to recruit a top-drawer lineup of reputable writers (including novelists Richard Price, Dennis Lehane, and George Pelecanos) and directors (including Ernest Dickerson, Tim Van Patten, and Agnieszka Holland), and by the time a major character is killed in the season's penultimate episode (arguably the series' finest yet), it's clear that The Wire has earned its crown as the most ambitious and intelligent crime drama in the history of American television. DVD extras are excellent, as usual, including five illuminating episode commentaries (an absolute must for devoted fans of the series), a Q&A session with cast & crew moderated by renowned TV critic and author Ken Tucker, and a classroom conversation with Simon that delves deeper into the creative process of the series. Having deservedly earned its renewal for a fourth season (out of a projected five, according to Simon), The Wire delivers surprises aplenty (keep a close watch for startling revelations) while proving, yet again, that cable-TV is the place to be for anyone seeking respite from the relative mediocrity of mainstream network programming. --Jeff Shannon

The heat is on in Baltimore. The drug war is being lost, bodies are piling up, and a desperate mayor wants the tide turned before the election. But the police department hasn't got any answers. With the demolition of the Franklin Terrace towers, Stringer Bell and the Barksdale crew have been forced to improvise. But no matter how hard McNulty and the detail try, the dealers always seem to be one step ahead of the game.

5 out of 5 stars Best show ever.......2007-06-15

I dont have much to say beyond what the many other reviewers have said about this terrific show. I truly think it is in a class by itself, though I have been consistently impresseed with HBO's programming. It's not a show that is fun to watch with other people while drinking/ having side conversations. Not that shows like that are bad, but The Wire is best watched alone, starting with season one episode one.

I like all the seasones of this show but season three ratchets up the intensity another notch. The conflicted relationship between Stringer Bell (my favorite character ever) and Avon is just brilliant. The ending montage gets me everytime. When Avon looks back at the courtroom looking for Stringer his facial expressions say everything. If you've seen the end of Season Three watch episode one of season one and the last episode of season one. D'Angelo (in episode 1) and Avon (In the finale) look behind them at the courtroom audience and Stringer is there in the back both times.

The lyrics also fit Avon's situation perfectly.

This show is genius. It is highly critical of most every institution it analyzes yet doesnt jam anything down your throat. Its also pretty tragic overall so if you're looking for happy endings, you should still watch this show but be prepared.

5 out of 5 stars Shakespheare in Baltimore....The Finest Season of the Greatest Show on Television.......2007-06-07

In Season 3 of David Simon's groundbreaking series, Lt. Daniels' Major Crimes Unit has turned its attention back on Westside drug dealers. Ultimately, as in Season 1, the targets are the drug kingpins Avon Barksdale and Stringer Bell.

But while in Season 1 and 2 the police were the clear heroes of the show (if notoriously flawed and human), in Season 3 The Wire's subtle critique of the drug war becomes a more significant theme. The police-work conducted by McNulty, Greggs, Daniels, and Freeman remains exciting and heroic, but their efforts are now on the margins of the true movement and import of the story. When Barksdale is finally busted, it is not so much the result of their police-work as the anonynmous tip of Stringer Bell. Bell (an charismatic and compelling character in his own right, who continues to grow in Season 3) has become increasingly disenchanted with "the game", and reaches out to "Bunny" Colvin of the Western with information on Avon. In the end it is questionable whether Major Crimes has accomplished anything, or whether it was the relationships with actual people forged by Colvin's humanity that actually made a positive difference.

Major "Bunny" Colvin of the Western District has become sick of the drug war--convinced that the tactics employed do not constitute real police work. So he starts pushing all drug trafficing in his district into 3 zones where drug dealing is more or less legalized. In the meantime, he hides this strategy from his bosses, while his friend "The Deacon" begins organizing outreach and condom/needle distribution among the addicts who begin gathering in these districts and no longer have to hide. "The Game" gradually becomes gutted from the inside out, as the violence associated with drug dealing is no longer necessary. When murders or thefts among the dealers occur, the dealers themselves begin turning to the police for protection--building relationships and passing information. Utimately even the ruthless Stringer Bell begins to trust Colvin and prefers Colvin's experiment to the destructive reality of grinding on the street. In the end, Colvin's story asks vital questions as to what police work is all about, and how the police can best protect and serve.

But what lifts Season 3 of The Wire above all television that has come before it is the story of Dennis "Cutty" Wise, which features in every single episode. Cutty is a convicted felon who is released from prison after 14 years...estranged from his family and all meaningful ties to the community.....as well as to himself. Indeed the only people who are initially prepared to reach out to him are Avon and his crew, who respect Cutty's legendary reputation in "the game". Cutty's journey takes him to the street, back into the game, back out, and ultimately upon a path to redemption, upon which he must "travel from A to B all by myself". I don't want to ruin the story for you--I'll only say that his struggle to find meaning and purpose in the midst of the urban nightmare is nothing less than sublime. His conversations with such awesome characters as Bodie, Slim Charles, Avon, The Deacon, and other denizons of the urban landscape are conducted in a Baltimore street slang that Simon renders into Shakesphearean poetry, whose final object is not merely extraordinary realism but striving towards a vision of redemption. It is the sort of timeless art that just gets better with repeat viewings.

If you are new to The Wire, start with Season 1, episode 1-3. Give yourself a chance to get used to the language, the realism, the all-to-human characters. And be prepared for the story to keep getting better and better.

5 out of 5 stars The Wire season #3.......2007-06-01

Season #3 is just as good as seasons one and two. I can't wate for season four. The actors are spot on with their roles. It is easy to belive that what you are seeing is real. The wrighting and story are great. You will want to watch all three seasons in correct order to keep the story line stright. And as with seasons one and two, put mom and the kids is another room when watching as it can get a wee bit randy and rank at times. I love this show, and don't ever want it to end. It is worth your time and money. Sit back and enjoy the ride.

5 out of 5 stars Great series. Period........2007-05-15

The characters are fully fleshed out, the story is intricate and brings the first season's characters back to the foreground for a swift climax and resolution. Worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars The Wire is the best.......2007-05-14

The Wire is the best show on TV. Season 3 doesn't disappoint. This season dives back into the Barksdale storyline. Get the first two seaons, then you'll have to have this one. I only wish they were filmed in HD/widescreen!

This Disney masterpiece from 1940 will hold up forever precisely because it doesn't restrain or temper the most elemental emotions and themes germane to its story. Based on the Collodi tale about a wooden puppet who wants to become a real boy, Pinocchio is among the most magical, mythical, and frightening films to come from the studio in its long history. A number of scenes make permanent impressions on young minds (just ask Steven Spielberg, who quoted the film more than once in Close Encounters of the Third Kind), and the songs ("When You Wish upon a Star") can't be beat. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars A Great Lie Lesson for Pinocchio.......2007-05-22

I love Pinocchio when he lies. His nose grew and grew longer and sure gives me an idea how creative author has. It's original powerful animation that Walt Disney has to present. Also I must add when Pinocchio asking the creator Why, Why, and Why and suddenly I asked my parents why Pinocchio asking Why's. A perfect family animation film.

4 out of 5 stars Was my father favorite carttoon !.......2007-04-13

My father loved Disney 's Pinocchio as a child and I still had the video tape of the carttoon in his memory !

1 out of 5 stars My least favorite Disney animation.......2007-04-09

I've enjoyed a lot of classics by Walt himself - Dumbo, Bambi, 101 Dalmatians, Lady and the Tramp etc. But I just cannot bring myself to like Pinocchio. I'm sorry, but it looked like was made for babies, or four or five year olds at the most. Although, even at the age of five, I found it too childish. I've heard some reviewers say that this film is quite dark, but I just cannot believe that! Firstly, they tried too hard on the animation. It was far too saturated. The colour is all screwed up. The acting is poor. The only good well-developed character is Jiminy Cricket. The other characters are very underdeveloped, so I didn't really care what happened to them. They made Pinocchio really sickly sweet, and I didn't feel for him, he was just annoying. The plot is ridiculous. It was just Pinocchio and Jiminy running into one problem after another. Oh, and the donkey scene is not disturbing - it's just plain stupid!

All in all, Pinocchio is only of interest to VERY young children. Otherwise, do not waste your money. If you want a good family film, rent Amblimation's 'Balto' instead.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREATS NEEDS AN UPGRADED EDITION!.......2007-03-13

This is one of Disney's finest animated features and it has not had a complete restoration done!! Mind boggling! The print here looks like it is direct from VHS. I hope there is a 2 disc Platinum edition coming soon?

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Classic Disney from Years Past.......2007-02-22

This movie is a beautifully-made masterpiece that, very unfortunately, seems to be overlooked sometimes because of other old Disney movies that were made around that time (like Snow White). However, of all the "old" Disney movies (made before the era of Eisner), this is the one that most hits the mark for me. Not only is it an interesting story with involving characters, but the overlooked soundtrack is also quite wonderful. "Hi-Diddle-Dee-Dee" is an old favorite of mine, and not to mention "Little Wooden Head" is a catchy little tune. This is my favorite of the oldies-but-goodies because not only does it completely hit the mark, but it doesn't rely on the old cliche of "princess captured by evil stepmother and then saved later on by a nameless Prince Charming who has no personality whatsoever". Though some of those movies are good, like Snow White, some of them are dull like Cinderella, and this movie doesn't make you make that choice.

Now I haven't always been a fan of this movie; this is more of a "grown-up" movie than many of the others that were made around that time. This is a darker tale than the likes of Snow White, and a more intense and involving one than movies like Cinderella. It also doesn't follow the oft-degraded Disney Formula, because there's no real cookie-cutter "bad guy". And since there's no real cookie-cutter bad guy, it makes it all the more interesting to see four or five villains make their entrances and exits, more like a real-life fairy tale than others. None of the villains "gets what he deserves", like in most Disney movies where they fall to their deaths.

That isn't to say that the other Disney movies aren't good. That is, however, to say that this Disney movie was ahead of its time in its innovations in realistic story developments. Granted, the story itself isn't that realistic, but we all know the story, and can take it for granted. And I'm not saying that the film is COMPLETELY underrated either. Just about everybody's heard the song "When You Wish Upon A Star", and it truly is a wonderfully sweet tune.

Speaking of which, Jiminy Cricket is a masterpiece of a character if there ever was one. And there are plenty of other great characters in this movie too: the old puppet master, Geppetto, who just wants a real boy; Cleo and Figaro, the domesticated fish and jealous cat; and of course many great villains, including Honest John, Stromboli, Lampwick, and of course Monstro, most of whom are also used for on-the-spot comic relief. But despite the comic relief, there are definitely some scenes that are too scary for the youngsters, including quite a few edgy scenes including the mad old puppeteer Stromboli. However, it's not ALL dark, which is good. There are some very fun, and some laugh-out-loud funny, scenes, both for the youngsters and for the adults.

Overall, this truly is a great movie for anybody, but especially for those who have ever been through the struggle of being a real boy. :)

Volume 2 of the stylish animated series Star Wars: Clone Wars picks up where volume 1 left off, with General Grievous threatening a group of Jedi. The war between the Republic and the Separatists continues to rage, and due to desperate need, Anakin Skywalker is bestowed the title of Jedi Knight, though he must undergo one final rite of passage by traveling to the frozen planet of Nelvan. The action is at its fiercest when the Separatists launch an overwhelming assault on Coruscant, and Masters Windu and Yoda get to show their stuff to defend the city. However, it's just a diversion from the main goal: Grievious's attempt to kidnap Supreme Chancellor Palpatine. In the series' most dramatic moment, Shaak Ti and other Jedi try to fend off the droid's attack. Clone Wars Volume 2 aired on the Cartoon Network in March 2005, and it's a bit more substantial than volume 1, taking place in five 12-minute chapters (nos. 21-25) rather than 3-minute chapters. And while volume 1 was mostly flat-out action, the developments in volume 2 lead directly to the opening of Episode III, Revenge of the Sith. And you even get small tidbits such as C-3PO (again voiced by Anthony Daniels) unveiling his new gold look, Padme sporting a cinnamon-bun hairdo, and the reason why General Grievous has difficulty breathing. Let casual fans content themselves with the feature films; Clone Wars remains essential viewing for the Star Wars aficionado. (Rated Y7 for cartoon action and violence) --David Horiuchi

DVD features
In both a commentary track and a featurette, Genndy Tartakovsky and his creative team discuss the making of Clone Wars and how it ties into Episode III, Revenge of the Sith. If you're not a fan of the Lego Star Wars, you might become one after you watch the amusing "Revenge of the Brick" trailer. There's also the same Xbox demo of Battlefront II that was on the Sith DVD, and the Dolby 5.1 sound is an improvement over volume 1's 2.0 Surround. --David Horiuchi

4 out of 5 stars Another blast of Star Wars animated fun.......2007-05-29

The second volume of the animated Star Wars: Clone Wars saga picks up where the first volume left off, and further bridges the gap between Episodes II and III. In these expanded episodes that originally aired on Cartoon Network, Anakin Skywalker finally fights to be made a Jedi Knight as Obi-Wan and the others take the fight to General Grievious. There's plenty of action and wonderfully utilized animation techniques by Dexter's Laboratory creator Genndy Tartakovsky; all of which helps make volume two of the Clone Wars a must for Star Wars fans new and old alike. The only real drawback with Clone Wars is the same flaws that were apparent with the first volume: the animation style might not be your cup of tea, and as a whole the volume is too short, although this time around the story and action are better developed. Despite all that though, Clone Wars is still a treat.

5 out of 5 stars Fill in the gaps.......2007-04-10

The Clone Wars DVD set help fill in the gap between Episodes II and III. These are great movies. My boys (5 and 3) love to watch them.

5 out of 5 stars Segue to Star Wars: Clone Wars.......2007-04-07

This set of anime, which is Volume 2, along with Volume 1, are a must for Star Wars fans. Vol 1 & 2 fill in all the blanks that are missing between the movies Episode II and III. Very well done as the producers of the anime worked with George Lucas on the story line. This may be a cartoon, but it's all Star Wars!

5 out of 5 stars Exactly what I wanted it to be........2007-04-05

Star Wars - Clone Wars, Volumes 1 and 2 are fun-filled, action-packed Genndy Tartakovsky dreams. If you like Star Wars, Dexter's Laboratory, and/or Samurai Jack then you're gonna love these Star Wars Clone Wars animated series'. There are 20 five minute episodes per disc, therefore it is a little short but you still get enough to not leave you needing more (Although I can never get enough of Genndy Tartakovsky's work). With their subtle humor and amazing fight scenes Tartakovsky style..these DVDs are a must-have.

4 out of 5 stars Wait for Vol.3 .......2007-03-16

Good movies but its very unsatisfied in the ending. We still want to wait for vol.3 of this series.

Blake Edwards's delightful 1959 comedy stars Cary Grant as a World War II submarine captain whose preference for a by-the-book command reluctantly yields to certain realities. Chief among those is that Grant's first officer (Tony Curtis, who impersonated Grant that same year in Billy Wilder's Some Like It Hot), a shameless hustler, is better than the navy at delivering whatever supplies the ship and crew need to keep going. But when Curtis sneaks a handful of Philippine refugees and several gorgeous nurses onto the all-male sub, the skipper not only has to cool down his crew but deal with an unexpected feminine influence on ship protocol. The film is a great deal of fun, sprinkled with the director's trademark sight gags (including one of Edwards's best, involving a torpedo and jeep), and graced with his unmistakable lilt. Grant is in great form, his comic brilliance almost impossibly effortless. --Tom Keogh

This is one of my favorite oldie's. I had pretty much worn my VHS out and needed another one, so the DVD had to be the new choice. Always loved Gary Grant. It's a good clean movie and very enjoyable. The type of movie I can let the grandchildren watch with no worries. I don't like most of the movies that are made today, so I still stick the good older ones. There are sooooo many laughs in this movie and yes, most of the time I watch it by myself. If you are havin or had a bad day, this movie will lift you spirit. Buy it, you wont be sorry.

For the Hollywood remake rule, which dictates that an update of an older film be inferior to the original in almost every aspect, The Thomas Crown Affair stands as a glorious exception. The original 1968 film, starring a dapper Steve McQueen and a radiant Faye Dunaway, was a diverting pop confection of mod clothes and nifty break-ins, but not much more. John McTiernan's new version, though, cranks up the entertainment factor to mach speed, turning what was a languid flick into a high-adrenaline caper romance. Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan) is now a man of industry who likes to indulge in a little high-priced art theft on the side; Catherine Banning (Rene Russo) is the insurance investigator determined to get on his tail in more ways than one. If you're thinking cat-and-mouse game, think again--it's more like cat vs. smarter cat, as both the thief and the investigator try to outwit each other and nothing is off-limits, especially after they start a highly charged love affair that's a heated mix of business and pleasure.

What makes this Thomas Crown more enjoyable than its predecesor is McTiernan's attention to detail in both the set action pieces (no surprise from the man who helmed Die Hard with precision accuracy) and the developing romance, the witty and intelligent script by Leslie Dixon (she wrote the love scenes) and Kurt Wimmer (he wrote the action scenes), and, most of all, its two stunning leads (both over 40 to boot), combustible both in and out of bed. Brosnan, usually held prisoner in the James Bond straitjacket, lets loose with both a relaxed sensuality and a comic spirit he's rarely expressed before. The film, however, pretty much belongs to Russo, who doesn't just steal the spotlight, but bends it to her will. Beautiful, stylish, smart, self-possessed, incredibly sexy, she's practically a walking icon; it's no wonder Crown falls for her hook, line, and sinker. With Denis Leary as a police detective smitten with Russo, and Faye Dunaway in a throwaway but wholly enjoyable cameo as Brosnan's therapist. --Mark Englehart

3 out of 5 stars OK.......2007-03-27

This movie is OK, but I prefer the original version with Steve McQueen. This remake is too Hollywood for me, with too many unbelievable stunts. The original was better.

4 out of 5 stars He got his Kicks .......2007-02-07

Despite my misgivings I actually enjoyed this movie. I found it to be very entertaining. Pierce Brosnan is rich, affluent and board. He steals art treasures for kicks. Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo make an acceptable and reluctant love duo. Denis Leary as the detective trying to nab Brosnan actually steals this film with his dedicated yet easy going style. As remakes go this is one of the better ones as of late. This film was made as one of Brosnan's non-Bond films during his tenure as 007. I still prefer the original.

5 out of 5 stars Find out what a billionaire does in his spare time.......2006-12-22

+++++

This movie is a remake (actually not an exact remake) of the 1968 movie "The Thomas Crown Affair" starring the legendary Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway (who has a small role in this remake).

In this movie a bored billionaire named Thomas "Tommy" Crown (Pierce Brosnan who also co-produced) masterminds an art theft of a 100 million dollar Monet painting. Unlike in the original movie (that was a bank heist), Crown actually participates in the theft.

Enter insurance investigator Catherine Banning (Rene Russo) with police detective Michael McCann (Denis Leary). Banning identifies Crown as the mastermind behind this crime. She's out to get him but a problem ensues along the way: she falls for Crown and Crown falls for her. Their scenes together are sizzling and explosive.

Unlike the 1968 original, there is tension created as the viewer wonders if Crown will actually get caught. As well, the sexual tension between Crown and the insurance investigator is heightened in this movie.

The acting is terrific by Brosnan, Russo, and Leary. I have to give special kudos to Russo as the smart and very sexy insurance investigator Catherine Banning. The background music is interesting and adds to each scene. There is a clever ending that I found unforgettable and fun to watch. I felt the entire movie was slick and ingeniously done.

Finally, the DVD (the one released in 2000) is perfect in visual and audio quality. It has the movie on both sides of the disc. Extras consist of the 1968 and 1999 theatrical trailers as well as a director audio commentary.

In conclusion, watch this movie for yourself to discover what a billionaire does in his spare time!!

(1 hr, 55 min; 1999; full screen; 36 scenes; rated `R')

3 out of 5 stars Watchable caper flick.......2006-12-05

This is a movie that moves in fits and starts. Parts of it are a lot of fun, parts of it stumble.

Most of the stumbling is done when Rene Russo is the focus of the movie. Admittedly, the script verges on the downright ridiculous, and she's placed in scenes that were simply hopeless. (Some of the dialogue is so bad that this movie might almost have made its way into an MST3K episode.) Still, a better actress might have made them...less hopeless. I found myself groaning and rolling my eyes at her hamming. And to hot things up, she's reduced to shimmying sans underwear in a see-through gown, and then providing plenty of topless footage. It doesn't work. The sudden, extended nudity seems kind of jarring, as if I just switched over to Cinemax without realizing it. There are also scenes where Russo switches to the cartoonish character known as The Bitch, and she's not believable then, either.

Brosnan is also a touch ridiculous from time to time, but mostly he plays his usual suave, handsome character. If you like that, you'll like him here.

Dennis Leary surprises with a low-key performance. If I would have expected anyone to deliver a true hambone performance, it would have been him.

There are lots of shots of exotic locales, like a hilltop cabana on a tropical island, or a glider flying over a forest alive with autumn colors, that are nice eye candy. We had just gotten our first widescreen TV and it was pretty nice to watch this movie show off the TV.

I found myself reaching for the remote a few times during this movie, telling myself, "OK, I've seen about enough of this." But I must admit, it held my attention, just barely, to the end.

5 out of 5 stars Excdellent!.......2006-12-02

I absolutely LOVE this movie. I am on my way to purchase my very own DVD today. I have been borrowing my sisters and decided I need my very own copy. Just like another reviewer said this movie requires intelect so if you do not have that don't bother. This movie is sexy, it has suspense, the music is nice and the characters make this movie seem very real. My sister and my friend use to rave about this movie years ago and I wander what the hype was about then finally years later I decided to watch it and became hooked! I can watch this everyday! LOL

Make no mistake, Clone Wars is honest-to-goodness authentic Star Wars. The animated series takes place between Episode II, Attack of the Clones and Episode III, Revenge of the Sith. If the feature films covers the beginning and end of the war, Clone Wars depicts the actual battles and events that made heroes into legends. Don't expect too much character development, as the episodes tend to be driven more by flat-out action than by dialogue (which can be a good thing, considering some Star Wars dialogue). We see such familiar faces as Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, and Mace Windu in combat, and we meet the elite ARC (Advanced Recon Commandos) clone troopers plus new Jedi--the amphibious Kit Fisto and two women, Luminara Unduli and Barriss Offee. We also see a little more development of Anakin--showing off the best pilot skills in the army, defying Obi-Wan, and engaging in a deadly duel with Sith apprentice Asajj Ventress. But just when it's clear that the Separatist droid armies are no match for a Jedi, the tide begins to turn with the introduction of the menacing General Grievous, who plays a crucial part in Episode III. The cast mostly consists of veteran voice actors, but Anthony Daniels does appear as C-3PO.

Clone Wars was created by Genndy Tartakovsky, whose resume includes such stylish series as Samurai Jack, Dexter's Laboratory, and The Powerpuff Girls, and the program won a 2004 Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program (For Programming One Hour or More). These 20 episodes, which played on the Cartoon Network (and were originally designated seasons 1 and 2), can be viewed as a seamless 69-minute whole or as individual chapters. DVD features include two commentary tracks, a making-of featurette, video game and Episode III trailers, and an Xbox playable demo of the stealth game Republic Commando. If you're a fan who can't wait for Episode III, Clone Wars is essential viewing. --David Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars GREAT Supplemental Story Telling!.......2007-06-30

This cartoon is an excellent supplement to the Star Wars saga! It gives more in-depth information about the story as a whole after Episode II and before Episode III. Even my PreSchooler (who LOVES Star Wars) really enjoys this movie!

Yes, it is intense. Yes, the graphics are much more cartoon-ish than what we see in CGI cartoons today, but I really like that! Plus, the voice recognition of the characters is an added bonus.

A MUST HAVE for Star Wars fans!

4 out of 5 stars Intense Cartoon!.......2007-05-10

When I first saw the Clone Wars cartoon on tv I knew I needed the DVD when it came out. I love the action sequences and think they did an excellent job. A few things seem a little far-fetched, but it's a cartoon so I let them pass.

2 out of 5 stars The force is not with this one..........2007-04-17

This animated perversion of Star Wars is an insult to one of the best Sci-Fi epics of all times. The characters are utterly rediculus (seriously, if the jedi were that actually powerful, why did they need the clones?), there is no plotline to speak of, and the entire thing is badly animated and has crappy voice acting. If you want a good build-up to Episode III, I suggest playing Star Wars: Republic Commando and reading Labyrinth of Evil and the other Clone Wars novels. Don't wast your money on this, it's not worth it

Director Martin Scorsese reunites with members of his GoodFellas gang (writer Nicholas Pileggi; actors Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Frank Vincent) for a three-hour epic about the rise and fall of mobster Sam "Ace" Rothstein (De Niro), a character based on real-life gangster Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal. (It's modeled after on Wiseguy and GoodFellas and Pileggi's true crime book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas.) Through Rothstein, the picture tells the story of how the Mafia seized, and finally lost control of, Las Vegas gambling. The first hour plays like a fascinating documentary, intricately detailing the inner workings of Vegas casinos. Sharon Stone is the stand out among the actors; she nabbed an Oscar nomination for her role as the voracious Ginger, the glitzy call girl who becomes Rothstein's wife. The film is not as fast paced or gripping as Scorsese's earlier gangster pictures (Mean Streets and GoodFellas), but it's still absorbing. And, hey--it's Scorsese! --Jim Emerson

this is the movie martin scorsese SHOULDA won his oscar for. instead it was deemed upon its release an inferior copycat of "goodfellas", what with the same director, writer, and stars, and a similar set of circumstances. this though is a quite different movie, and (imho) a superior one. while "goodfellas" is set among a highly parochial little group, the gangsters are only a part of the scene in "casino": its much more widespread a saga of greed and the corruption of stupidity. whereas joe pesci is a cartoon in the earlier film, here he is a fully fleshed out character. de niro (more a glorified supporting character in "goodfellas") offers an insightful reading of an ordinary man with one phenomenal talent (the ability to set the correct odds) who parlays it into a position of power for which he knows he is unqualified, yet enjoys the ride. and sharon stone gives the performance of her career as de niros unfaithful drug-addicted wife. excellent supporting work also from james woods, don rickles, and a host of unknowns cast as aged mob bosses, &c. not to mention a great job of art & costume direction, brilliant soundtrack, the amazing opening titles sequence, and so on. it might not be scorses most underrated movie (thats still the hated but brilliant "king of comedy") -- but it might well be his very best.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!.......2007-04-11

i looooooove this movie. Bob DeNiro is SO good in it. and Joe Pesci too. and of course especially Sharon Stone. wow, didn't realize she could act until i saw this. amazing acting. even down to the extras its good acting. it feels so real. and this movie has my all time fave scene; when Sam sees Ginger for the first time, and Mickey and Sylvia's "Love is strange" song comes on, and Gin makes a scene, throwing chips, and Sam, who can obviously stop and throw her out doesn't, but just stares mesmerized at her. and she know she's got him. she leaves looking at him and laughing. that scene is SO SEXY. this movie also has some good, old time songs. Scorcese really took his time to make this. but major WARNING: seriously, it's NOT FOR KIDS. even i can't watch manyo its scenes they are so realistic and gruesome. that's the only thing that i don't like about it, that it's violence makes it unwatchable some times. but isn't that still good b/c it shows what great acting it is?! if u don't watch this u haven't watched a real movie. one of the bset movies ever made!

5 out of 5 stars Gambling in the desert.......2007-04-02

Great performances by all-star cast. Martin Scorsese shows why he's the best action director in the business. Diniro, Sharon Stone and James Woods are the imperfect love triangle. And Pesci is Pesci. Must see mob movie.

2 out of 5 stars an awful and exagerrated pastiche from Scorsese's better films.......2007-03-15

I was shocked at the crudeness of this film: it is like Scorsese took the best moments from a number of his films and strung them together to make a thriller about some horrible thugs: a guy gets his head put into a vice for cheating, Sharon Stone is too beautiful to fit in, Pesci gets it in a car, etc. It just didn't hang together, the story felt flat, and there was little smoothness to the narrative flow. This is Scorsese's worst by far.

This 1956 pop adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest is one of the best, most influential science fiction movies ever made. Its space explorers are the models for the crew of Star Trek's Enterprise, and the film's robot is clearly the prototype for Robby in Lost in Space. Walter Pidgeon is the Prospero figure, presiding over a paradisiacal world with his lovely young daughter and their servile droid. When the crew of a spaceship lands on the planet, they become aware of a sinister invisible force that threatens to destroy them. Great special effects and a bizarre electronic score help make this movie as fresh, imaginative, and fun as it was when first released. --Amazon.com

On the DVDs
The colorfully designed 2-disc 50th Anniversary Edition of Forbidden Planet (also available in a collector's box) comes in a slip-covered fold-out case accompanied by a pocket of 17 miniature lobby card reproductions (eight for Forbidden Planet, nine for the 1957 companion movie The Invisible Boy). On Disc 1, Forbidden Planet is presented with a new digital transfer from restored picture and audio elements, with soundtrack remastered in Dolby Digital 5.1, offering considerable improvement over the film's previous DVD release. A selection of deleted scenes were taken from a faded and scratchy 16-millimeter "work print" that had originally been viewed by composers Louis and Bebe Barron as they were creating the film's unique electronic score; they consist of full or partial scenes cut from the final film-- mostly for good reason, but collectors (and those who first saw this rare material on the original Criterion Collection laserdisc) will welcome their inclusion here. The "lost footage" is crude special-effects test footage, primarily of interest to sci-fi historians and aficionados. Given the fact that the original "Robby the Robot" cost over $100,000 to build in 1955, it's easy to see why MGM wanted to get their money's worth: An excerpt from the 1950s TV series "MGM Parade" shows Forbidden Planet star Walter Pigeon appearing briefly with Robby, and the popular robot gets even more attention as a guest star in "The Robot Client," an episode of the Thin Man TV series (starring Peter Lawford and Phyllis Kirk) that originally aired on Feb. 28, 1958. Disc 1 also includes a gallery of seven science-fiction movie trailers dating from 1953 (The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms) to 1960's The Time Machine.

Disc 2 begins with 1957's The Invisible Boy, a still-enjoyable B-movie that served as Robby's post-Forbidden Planet showcase. Here, filmdom's favorite automaton plays sidekick to a young boy (Richard Eyer) who turns invisible when he gets caught up in a super-computer's scheme of global domination. Also included are three documentaries, ranging from very good to excellent: In addition to reuniting the surviving cast members of the '56 classic (including Leslie Nielsen, Anne Francis, Richard Anderson, Warren Stevens, and Earl Holliman), "Amazing! Exploring the Far Reaches of Forbidden Planet" is an appreciative tribute to Forbidden Planet with some of Hollywood's foremost sci-fi fans including special effects masters Dennis Muren and Phil Tippett, SF movie expert Bill Warren, and others. "Robby the Robot: Engineering a Sci-Fi Icon" is a featurette about the robot's design, creation and pop-cultural history, featuring original "Robby" designer Robert Kinoshita, Bill Malone (current owner of the original Robby), and Fred "The Robot Man" Barton, a lifelong robot fanatic who now sells fully authorized, full-scale replicas of Robby for sci-fi fans with deep pockets. Closing out disc 2 is "Watch the Skies!: Science Fiction, the 1950s and Us," a 2005 documentary from Turner Classic Movies, written and directed by Time magazine critic Richard Schickel. It's a thoroughly comprehensive survey of '50s sci-fi and its influence on the next generation of film directors, including engaging interviews with George Lucas, Steven Spielberg, John Carpenter, Ridley Scott and James Cameron. --Jeff Shannon

Description

A dutiful robot named Robby speaks 188 languages. An underground lair offers evidence of an advanced civilization. But among Altair-4's many wonders, none is greater or more deadly than the human mind. Forbidden Planet is the granddaddy of tomorrow, a pioneering work whose ideas and style would be reverse-engineered into many cinematic space voyages to come. Leslie Nielsen plays the commander who brings his spacecruiser crew to the green-skied world that's home to Dr. Morbius (Walter Pidgeon), his daughter (Anne Francis)...and to a mysterious terror. Featuring sets of extraordinary scale and the first all-electronic musical soundscape in film history, Forbidden Planet is in a movie orbit all its own.

5 out of 5 stars Cheesy, Gaudy, Silly, Absolutely Fabulous........2007-06-27

This is a true gem. It makes so little sense that it is beautiful. The plot and reasoning would give Spock a migraine. This movie starts with hansom Lesley Nielson or whatever, going to visit some old creepy guy "living" with his only daughter on some way out planet. Everything from why it was so long to send a ship to investigate the velerapon party's disappearance, to morpheous blowing up the planet didnt make sense... BUT WHO CARES! it has lesley nielson man, really. Laser blasters, cheap rubber robots, beautiful women and drunk cooks. Even contains a brilliant sub plot of the farmers daughter scheme. Lets just say his daughter is like a child in a candy shop when a ship of hunky men land on her porch. If you love top notch B movies that were bumped up a grade or two then this is the goodness here. This movie truly encompasses the rich, chewy, caramel flavor of being a great movie.

5 out of 5 stars this 1956 movie is spectacular!.......2007-06-04

Enjoy the story, special effects and art work. remember this movie was made in 1956 way before most of us were even born. Anne Francis was one gorgeous woman! Buy this movie in HD it looks fantastic. Its a little spooky for kids under 12.

4 out of 5 stars Monsters from the ID.......2007-06-02

Forbidden Planet was the blueprint for Star Trek, Lost in Space, Star Wars, It was so influential that you may watch it, and see a whole new genre that popped up because of it. The movie is the first time the world saw the Robbie Robot character, the same robot give or take a few spare parts from Lost in Space. The crew of the space ship was a complete crew even down to a cook. Laser shooters were used in this movie as well, a Hollywood first. That being said it did have some flaws; the characters were all one dimensional. The story went no where at times. Such as the time where the cook got the robot to synthesize bourbon. Yes some of the plot just seemed like filler. I really got the feeling that Dr. Morbius was based on Captain Nemo from 20000 leagues Jules Verne story. The way how he gave the tour of his world and machinery just seemed so familiar to the 20000 leagues story. Overall this is a fine transfer to DVD, and has quite extras on this DVD package. If you love old science fiction campy films this is a must have.

3 out of 5 stars Why? Oh why?.......2007-05-24

Warner should be ashamed of itself for calling this an Ultimate edition.
They release this on one of the highest capacity media and yet guess what!
The original aspect ratio of the movie is lost!!! That means the movie is clipped on the sides. The original movie is 2.55:1, this so called Ultimate version is 2.4:1.
%5 of the original width is missing. And you call this an ultimate version, HAHA!

5 out of 5 stars A Sci-fi Classic.......2007-05-22

The movie itself is a classic on so many levels...this particular package contains promotional items that the movie buff, at least, will find intriguing. The film itself is surprisingly non-dated considering that it was made in the very early 50's. And Leslie Nielson sometimes actuall acts.

5 out of 5 stars Midnite Movies boxed up.......2007-05-26

These are the 4 Midnite Movie Double Features of AIP Beach Party films that were released a few years back. I enjoy being able to sit back and watch the surf nonsense. Eric Von Zipper is king. Shame they don't run these as afternoon flicks in the summer on WLVI in Boston. Also a shame they didn't create a double feature of Pajama Party and Dr. Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine.

The only question is if MGM ever fixed How to Stuff a Wild Bikini. The orignal release claimed it was an anamophic version of the Scope transfer, but it turned out to be the pan and scan.
