"Goldbricker." Now there's a term you don't hear much anymore. But that's what Ed Sullivan called Sgt. Ernest G. Bilko back in the 1950s, and it's as apt a term as any for Phil Silvers' immortal comic creation. Hustler, gambler, scam artist, and con man also apply, but anyway you slice it, Bilko is inarguably one of the greatest characters to emerge in television's so-called Golden Age, and this three-disc 50th Anniversary Edition, cherry picking episodes from all four seasons (it ran from '55-'59), is a beautiful thing. Created by Nat Hiken and originally called "You'll Never Get Rich," The Phil Silvers Show is classic situation comedy. There's no character arc, no lessons learned, no sentimental denouement; just laughs, and plenty of 'em. The typical episode finds Bilko on the make--usually, though not exclusively, for money--and generally ends with him holding the short end of his own shtick. (They don't all follow the formula; a hilarious exception is "The Court Martial," in which Bilko is ordered to defend a chimpanzee that the Army has somehow managed to enlist and is now trying to expel.) Silvers, a master at both verbal and physical comedy, is the focal point, of course. But the ensemble work, featuring Bilko's usual stooges from the Fort Baxter motor pool (Barbella, Doberman, Paparelli), his favorite victims (cf. Col. Hall), and occasional guest stars (episodes with Fred Gwynne, Alan Alda, and Dick Van Dyke are included in this set), is uniformly brilliant, the acting is seemingly effortless, and the pleasure they take in their work is palpable. Bottom line: these shows may have been produced 50 years ago, but the jillions of TV comedies that followed have never improved on them. Among the many quality bonus features are a full-length "lost audition show" (recorded on kinescope), appearances by Silvers on Ed Sullivan and Dick Cavett's programs, audio commentary on some episodes, and more. Some fans will undoubtedly quibble with the episode selection; with only 18 of the more than 140 produced shows included here, it's inevitable that a few favorites didn't make the cut. Still, until (or unless) Paramount gets around to releasing each individual season, this set is a must-have. --Sam Graham

Product Description

Phil Silvers plays Ernie Bilko, a motor pool sgt in the US army. He is based at Fort Baxter, a small camp hidden away near a town called Roseville, in the wilds of Kansas. The camp is supposedly run by Colonel Hall, but it's Bilko that calls the shots. Whether it's poker games, betting on the horses, or when ever he was short of money, which was just about all the time, getting his platoon to cough up. Along with the other Sgt's from the Mess Hall, Signals, and Supply, Bilko is continually at war with Colonel Hall, who is desperately trying to put a stop to the gambling once and for all.

5 out of 5 stars Sgt. Bilko - 50th Anniversary Edition.......2007-05-18

I waited patiently for years for this release. It is hilarious.
Phil Silvers is perfect in the role. One of the best sit-coms
ever made, especially for anyone who was ever in the Army. Don't
miss it!

5 out of 5 stars Finally, A Bilko Tribute Worth Purchasing!.......2007-05-12

For so many years I had been looking for this set and all I ever found were cheap reprints of reprints of pirated British TV shows or wherever they originated from. This set is a must buy for the comedy classics TV buff. Great Stuff!

4 out of 5 stars The Bilko DVDs.......2007-03-29

It's the old Bilko. The nostalgia pours back
My 15 year old son said "There's something wrong with the DVD, its all grainy" but I told him the DVD was fine; that's the quality of TV productions back then.
It's great to see Phil Silvers again as the masterful, conniving Master Sergeant.

5 out of 5 stars A good selection of episodes.......2007-03-27

Along with most Bilko fans I would have picked a different assortment of episodes. These are the only available selection on DVD in the U.S. and I am glad to have them. Years ago I taped virtually every episode when it was broadcast as a marathon on "T.V. Land". I should have gone through and reviewed each episode at the time. I have misplaced many of those recordings for various reasons but let me say for the record that many of the shows were less than stellar. There are about 30 of the 142 shows that were true gems. Another 30-40 were very good, the remainder were just o.k. Of course an O.K. Bilko Show was still more entertaining than most of the junk on t.v. today. Remember the talent pool was more rich in the old days. There were usually only three channels on television in the 50's! I very much recommend this set and I too would buy a complete series on DVD if it was offered. The video and audio quality is quite good.

5 out of 5 stars comedy at its best.......2007-01-24

This is a 3 disc set with 18 episodes on it of classic Bilko very funny very interesting with DVD extras. After this wonderful viewing experience I hope more classic Bilko episodes will come onto DVD format.

2 out of 5 stars Even Steve thinks this film sucks.......2007-04-02

After doing this film Steve Martin quit doing movies for a while and even turned down scripts written for him so if your a huge fan you may enjoy it, but Roxanne, LA Story, and Bowfinger are some of Steve's best works.

4 out of 5 stars Old Laughs.......2007-01-11

You may have forgotten just how funny this one is. It's great for those times when you just want to smile, but aren't sure what to watch. Plus, you have the added benefit that most young people haven't seen it yet! Nothing too objectionable in it, so that's good too.

5 out of 5 stars Steve is the Best.......2005-10-31

Steve Martin is simply the funniest guy in show business. A great remake of a classic. No one can play characters the way Steve can and this movie is sure to entertain one and all.

4 out of 5 stars More a tribute to 70's Steve Martin than Silvers.......2005-06-17

Though based on the famous character in Phil Silver's famous oldie TV show, the new "Sergeant Bilko" is less an homage to that show than it is to the classic Steve Martin of his 1970's days. Though this Bilko (again a shifty and tireless grafter, the evil face of non-coms everywhere) is very much the opportunist that Silvers' character was (he runs the base casino), as shy of risk as Silvers was (the unit's mobilization orders for Desert Storm mysteriously disappeared) and manages to get caught in his own dealings as Silvers had (Bilko botches the fixing of an Army boxing match, unwittingly tricking each boxer to think he's the one who's supposed to take a fall) the screwball zaniness is very much out of Steve Martin's SNL days.

The script has Bilko's unit charged with testing a brand new army weapon - a "hovertank" that is soon to be cancelled because, among other things, it simply doesn't work. That the hovertank's end will spell doom for his own cozy position doesn't seem to bother Bilko, mostly because he lives day-to-day. Things change when the officer charged with evaluating the hovertank turns out to be the fearsome Major Thorn (Phil Hartman). Years earlier, Bilko unwittingly made an enemy of Thorn by accidentally implicating him in one of his bitched schemes. Now a major, Thorne isn't simply content enough to eliminate the Hovertank, but must now axe Bilko as well. They say that desperate times reveal the man, and Bilko is now revealed to be the spineless weasel his troops have come to love. Martin plays Bilko like a character from one of his old SNL skits. It's sort of fun to watch the guy work on material we haven't seen since his more sedate days playing less zany funnymen ("LA Story", "Roxanne") and more mature dramatic roles ("The Spanish Prisoner", "Grand Canyon" and that update of "Silas Marner"). It's light and breezy and you'll probably forget most of the gags, and the script under-uses most of the supporting cast (especially the now late-great Phil Hartman as Bilko's evil nemesis), but it's still fun.

5 out of 5 stars Must See It !.......2005-05-30

Be cautious of anybody who doesn't adore this movie. This a theatrical tour de force as well as comic genius and the pinnacle of entertainment in our society. Many centuries from now, when most things are long forgotten, new civilizations will be entertained by this rendition of Sgt Bilko. This movie is the ONLY one you need in your DVD collection. Description

Damon Wayans stars in this hilarious escapade that commands laughs aplenty! When peace breaks out in America, killing machine Major Benson Winifred Payne, United States Marine Corps Special Forces (Wayans), is given his marching orders… to the unemployment line. Unable to cope with civilian life, Payne is thrust back into the military regimen as commander of the Madison Academy Junior ROTC. How does the military's most dangerous secret weapon discipline a few good men when none of them is even old enough to shave? Any way he wants! At least until Dr. Emily Walburn, school counselor (Karen Parsons), joins his tour of duty. Armed with the comic genius of Damon Wayans and stockpiled with humor, "Major Payne orders up the laughs." (Los Angeles Times)

The Army is known for churning out lean, mean fighting machines intent on protecting our great nation. But at Fort Baxter, there's one unit that can't even form a straight line… Steve Martin stars with Dan Aykroyd and Phil Hartman in an outrageous comedy from Imagine Entertainment. Martin is the inexplicable, the incorrigible, the invincible Sgt. Ernie Bilko, leader of a ragtag group of the sorriest soldiers ever to enlist in the armed forces. Instead of training his troops for battle, he passes on his legacy of gambling and shunning responsibility. Times get tough however, when the base is threatened with a shutdown, and a by-the-book adversary, Major Thorn (Hartman), is intent on taking Bilko's reputation down with it. Now, all bets are on Bilko to drum up his biggest scheme yet to save Fort Baxter… and clear his name!

      Product Description

Comedian Phil Silvers created one of the most beloved characters in television history with his portrayal of Sergeant Bilko on THE PHIL SILVERS SHOW (aka YOU'LL NEVER GET RICH). Set on a U.S. Army base, the 1950s-era series followed the smooth-talking Bilko as he attempted a hilarious string of get-rich-quick schemes with the help of his hapless underlings--and the consternation of his beleaguered commanding officer, Colonel Hall (Paul Ford). Renowned for its complex, screwball storylines and witty, rapidfire dialogue, the Emmy Award-winning series is resurrected in this collection of 21 remastered episodes, including the never-before-seen pilot.
